Race 1: 13:30 Listowel Irish Stallion Farms EBF Median Auction Maiden IRE 1m
(10) Wellwhatshappenin | | | | | | 2 | Shane B Kelly | Patrick Joseph Hayes | Smooth Daddy newcomer from small yard; dam 5f 2yo winner (RPR 69), half-sister to 7f winner Party Angel, out of half-sister to 5f Group 2 winner Tipsy Creek and 7f Group 3 winner Abunawwas. |
(15) Blondina | | | | | | 2 | Rory Cleary | J S Bolger | 100-1 when showing improvement at Gowran early in the month; hooded. |
(3) Whats New | | | | | | 2 | J M Sheridan | Andrew Slattery | 11,000euros yearling; closely related to 6f AW winner Burmese Waltz (inc 2yo; RPR 100), half-brother to winners Another Odyssey (1m3f/1m4f AW; 77) and Selsey Sizzler (12.4f AW/2m turf; 68); dam 1m2f AW winner (78). |
(14) Vlhova | | | | | | 2 | Chris Hayes | Kevin Thomas Coleman | From a respected yard but looks a work in progress and could be a nice one for nurseries after this. |
(5) Plunder | | | | | | 2 | Keithen Kennedy | Josh Halley | 5,500euros yearling; half-brother to 6f winner Happier (RPR 74); dam German 1m winner, sister to 6f winner Pumpkin, closely related to 1m-8.6f AW winner Our Manekineko, out of 5f/6f 2yo winning close relation to 6f/7f Group 2 winner Byron. |
(7) Tinnakelly | | | | | | 2 | Andrew Slattery | Andrew Slattery | 7,000euros yearling; dam 1m2f winner (RPR 75), closely related to smart 1m-1m3f winner Mordin, half-sister to useful 1m-1m4f winner Pillar Mountain, is granddaughter of sister to Derby winner Commander In Chief. |
(16) J M's Joy | | | | | | 2 | Adam Caffrey | Patrick Martin | Placed in claiming maiden over this trip at Navan but will do well to make the first six here. |
(17) Tilani | | | | | | 2 | | M Halford & T Collins | First reserve; in rear at the Curragh in June; gelded. |
(18) Calcifer | | | | | | 2 | | Gavin Cromwell | Second reserve; only 10-3 for 7f contest on debut when beaten over 5l at Down Royal. |
(19) I Can Imagine | | | | | | 2 | Wayne Hassett | Joseph Patrick O'Brien | Third reserve; mid-division over 6f at Navan earlier this month. |
(6) The Mizen Queen | | | | | | 2 | Jamie Powell | Noel Meade | Much improved on second start over just a little shorter at Tipperary but will need further progress. |
(9) Invincibletomorrow | | | | | | 2 | Gary Carroll | Gavin Cromwell | Took a step forward when fourth at Leopardstown, just ahead of Fivefortwo, but not so good since when tried in headgear; up in trip. |
4th (12) Famed Again | | | | | | 2 | Wayne Hassett | Thomas Cooper | Locally-trained filly was much improved on third start when placed over 7f at Galway; respected on that form. |
(13) Timandi | | | | | | 2 | Luke McAteer | James M Barrett | 6,500euros foal; half-sister to winners Miss McHenry (1m/1m1f inc Italy; RPR 84), Divine Celt (1m2f; 71) and Sadlers Man (Swedish 1m4f); dam unplaced 1m2f AW (24), sister to top-class 1m2f-1m4f filly Islington, out of 1m4f Group 1 winner; first home in a Barrier Trial last month. |
(1) Jareth | | | | | | 2 | Nathan Crosse | John S O'Donoghue | 11s, late headway when fourth at Sligo and placed horses unbeaten in three starts since; bred to appreciate this longer trip. |
(11) Copacabana Sands | | | | | | 2 | Gavin Ryan | Diego Dias | Much better when hooded for second start, staying on into fifth at Down Royal; more needed but longer trip a plus. |
2nd (4) Nobler | | | | | | 2 | Declan McDonogh | Joseph Patrick O'Brien | Ran in a Barrier before Galway debut where he was a never-nearer third over 7f; that race hasn't worked out but he was green and should improve plenty with extra furlong to suit as well. |
1st (2) Right And True | | | | | | 2 | Jack Cleary | A P O'Brien | Prominent racer placed in maidens and rating was marked up for good run in valuable sales race at the Curragh; stepping up to a mile for the first time. |
3rd (8) Fivefortwo | | | | | | 2 | Ronan Whelan | M Halford & T Collins | Plenty of money for him when staying-on sixth at Leopardstown and extra furlong should suit; likely to be involved. |
The 89-rated Right And True is a prominent racer who sets a good standard and Nobler was an eye-catcher on debut at the Galway festival but it was notable how well backed FIVEFORTWO was at Leopardstown and his yard's juveniles usually sharpen up a lot for a run. Jareth's Sligo run was promising too and he has each-way claims. [Mark Nunan]
Race 2: 14:00 Listowel Clieveragh Handicap IRE 1m
(17) Santa Catarina | | | | | | 5 | Robyn Donaghue-Leahy | Paul John Gilligan | Reserve; modest maiden yet to show anything for new yard; takes a marked drop in trip. |
(12) Kami | | | | | | 4 | Rory Cleary | Mark Michael McNiff | Won over 6f at Sligo last year but very poor form since; back from a break and not sure to stay. |
1st (13) Relevant Range | | | | | | 5 | Darragh O'Sullivan | Gillian Scott | AW maiden winner has struggled to make an impact in handicaps; better for last month's Killarney run behind Nibras Rainbow and will have been primed for this meeting by local yard. |
4th (8) Charlie Brow'n | | | | | | 4 | Declan McDonogh | T J O'Mara | Has shown ability in maidens but never involved in first two handicap starts at Galway. |
(1) Lilikoi | | | | | | 6 | Rachael Blackmore | Michael Flannery | Four wins for David Barron in Britain; picked up for 8,000GBP last September but has obviously had issues since. |
5th (14) Han Solo | | | | | | 8 | Jamie Powell | Augustine Leahy | Infrequent winner but has run well over C&D a few times and each-way claims after good run at Cork lately. |
(15) Bobby K | | | | | | 9 | Andrew Slattery | Michael William O'Meara | Better record on AW but sole turf success came here two years ago; not coming here in great form but latest run in higher grade at Cork was okay. |
(16) Portmagee | | | | | | 4 | Chris Hayes | Adrian McGuinness | Glimpses of ability for Dick Brabazon, notably when fourth at last year's Galway festival; shaped like she needed seasonal/yard debut at Gowran and interesting to see Hayes on board. |
2nd (4) Clarita | | | | | | 3 | Gary Carroll | Gavin Cromwell | AW winner at two; bit better over 6f/7f lately when beaten around 5l and stepping up in trip might help. |
(5) Eastern Wind | | | | | | 5 | Alyse Clarke | T G McCourt | Three-time winner at up to a mile; poor lately but not beaten far when placed at Leopardstown in June; visor back on. |
(9) Academy Winner | | | | | | 3 | J M Sheridan | Denis Gerard Hogan | Ran well in higher grade on stable/handicap debut at Gowran early this month; third in first-time cheekpieces at that track on Saturday. |
(7) Wrist Art | | | | | | 7 | Wayne Hassett | Timothy Doyle | Second to Drop The Dip in this last year in between a couple of ready wins over 1m/1m1f under this rider; seems to be running into form and any ease in the ground will help. |
3rd (3) Arch Enemy | | | | | | 5 | Keithen Kennedy | Patrick Magee | C&D winner will need the breaks and pace to aim at but comes here in reasonable form and has crack apprentice on board. |
(2) Shoot To Kill | | | | | | 7 | Ronan Whelan | Jack W Davison | Prolific winner in Britain; twice runner-up this summer, including when narrowly beaten by Nibras Rainbow at Killarney last month; led then but doesn't have to and ground-versatile. |
(6) Drop The Dip | | | | | | 4 | Gavin Ryan | Thomas Gibney | Unbeaten in two C&D runs including when beating Wrist Art in corresponding contest last year; has been running okay and back on an attractive mark now; likely to go forward from a good draw. |
(10) Dancing Steve | | | | | | 3 | Adam Caffrey | Adrian McGuinness | Had been running over further and 1m1f, in a visor, seemed to suit last twice; off the mark in 3yo handicap (third won since) at Tipperary; sharp mile here possibly not ideal. |
(11) Nibras Rainbow | | | | | | 4 | Jack Cleary | Paul W Flynn | In a good spell of form at present with creditable efforts either side of his Killarney victory over Shoot To Kill; stepping back up to a mile will help and couldn't put you off him. |
Wayne Hassett won twice on WRIST ART last term and Tim Doyle's 7yo seems to be running into a bit of form. He was second to Drop The Dip in last year's renewal and that rival, unbeaten in both C&D outings, has to come into it along with in-form contenders Nibras Rainbow, Shoot To Kill and Dancing Steve. Arch Enemy will be coming home well but her chance depends on how fast they go up front. [Mark Nunan]
Race 3: 14:35 Listowel Tote Ireland Maiden IRE 1m
(10) Phoenix Princess | | | | | | 3 | Darragh O'Sullivan | Micky Fenton | Lowly-rated filly is tried in blinkers; can't be having her. |
(12) Sea Of Beauty | | | | | | 3 | Luke McAteer | Eoin Griffin | Poor form so far; rank outsider. |
(6) Belfrina | | | | | | 3 | Ronan Whelan | John S O'Donoghue | Lot of stamina on damside of pedigree and late headway in back-end 6f juvenile maiden at the Curragh; long lay-off. |
(4) Saji | | | | | | 3 | Gearoid Brouder | Ian O'Connor | Modest form in two runs for the Gosdens and picked up for 9,000gns in July; best watched. |
(5) And Yet It Moves | | | | | | 3 | Andrew Slattery | J A Stack | Very well bred but unfancied when weakening out of contention at Naas last month; could improve a fair bit. |
(1) Chet's Fancy | | | | | | 3 | Adam Caffrey | D K Weld | Okay run at two but well beaten when yard second-string on last month's return; headgear. |
(3) Powerful Hook Head | | | | | | 3 | Declan McDonogh | Joseph Patrick O'Brien | Two runs over 1m1f, better on Gowran debut than last week at Punchestown where he missed the kick. |
(9) Next Trick | | | | | | 3 | Chris Hayes | D K Weld | Second over this trip at Gowran in June but hasn't gone the right way since and now tried in blinkers. |
3rd (11) Quatrain | | | | | | 3 | Gary Carroll | Henry De Bromhead | Runner-up in first two starts over this trip at Gowran; outclassed in stakes company over 1m2f when last seen in June; each-way chance on earlier form. |
4th (7) Final Curtain | | | | | | 3 | Shane B Kelly | J P Murtagh | 6s, nice start over this trip when beaten around 3l by filly now rated 81 at Gowran in July; open to plenty of improvement. |
2nd (8) Finsceal Luas | | | | | | 3 | Rory Cleary | J S Bolger | Last seen when far from shamed (beaten 11l) in Irish 1,000 Guineas having been placed in maidens over 7f/1m2f before that; lay-off not a concern and she's the one to beat. |
1st (2) Dublin | | | | | | 3 | Jack Cleary | A P O'Brien | Half-brother to 6f and 7f (Listed) AW 2yo winner Fort Myers (RPR 108); dam 1m winner (inc 2yo/Irish 1,000 Guineas; 117), sister to several Group winners inc 7f-1m Group 1 winners Gleneagles and Happily out of 6f 2yo Group 2 winner; blinkers on and Cleary has been doing well for Ballydoyle. |
The obvious one is Irish 1,000 Guineas also-ran Finsceal Luas and her four-month absence is of no great concern. We'll take her on, though, with FINAL CURTAIN who made a pleasing debut at Gowran in July. The Ballydoyle newcomer Dublin is bred in the purple and his rider has a good strike-rate for the yard. Quatrain has an each-way shout on the form of her first two runs. [Mark Nunan]
Race 4: 15:10 Listowel Oisin Kelly "Every Drop Counts" giveblood.ie Handicap IRE 1m 1f
(4) Morse | | | | | | 4 | N G McCullagh | Charles Weld | Rewarded for consistency when winning a 1m heavy ground handicap at Leopardstown in April; soundly beaten in a pair of premier handicaps on good ground since; down in class here and whatever rain falls will help but others preferred. |
(6) Harbour Gem | | | | | | 3 | Luke McAteer | James M Barrett | Narrowly landed a 1m2f Cork maiden for Dermot Weld in May; well beaten in a pair of valuable handicaps and a Listed race since; debuts for James Barrett here and not that easy to assess, but will appreciate the drop in class. |
(12) Obama Army | | | | | | 4 | Chris Hayes | Eoin Christopher McCarthy | Dual winner in Britain but only glimpses of form here; wears all the headgear and respected from his local yard but others much more likely. |
(10) Sinbad My Dad | | | | | | 3 | Keithen Kennedy | Seamus Fahey | Still a maiden after 13 starts; not beaten far in a Galway handicap or a maiden hurdle at Killarney but a lot more needed; was too keen in front at Navan on Saturday before fading. |
4th (7) Sirjack Thomas | | | | | | 9 | Adam Caffrey | Adrian McGuinness | Dropping down the handicap has led to a bit of a renaissance this year, winning a 1m handicap at Dundalk and a 7f Galway handicap two weeks ago; stays this trip and has a leading chance here despite a 6lb rise. |
3rd (1) Complete Fiction | | | | | | 7 | Neve Bennett | Jarlath P Fahey | Four-time winner but has to be delivered late and can be frustrating; got everything right under this rider in a 1m2f Naas handicap last month; up 6lb and has plenty of weight but well capable if the cards fall his way. |
(11) Clever And Cute | | | | | | 3 | Rory Cleary | J S Bolger | Runner-up in a pair of heavy ground maidens at Gowran and Roscommon; did not quite get home over 1m2f on good ground at Navan so this trip might be an optimum; could go well. |
(9) Alfalfa | | | | | | 6 | Wayne Hassett | Timothy Doyle | Consistent performer at the end of last season, winning a 1m4f Thurles handicap and several placed efforts; not beaten far on his slightly belated reappearance at Clonmel early this month and should come on for that; trip should be fine. |
1st (3) Casanova | | | | | | 8 | Ronan Whelan | Adrian McGuinness | The last of his four career wins came three years ago off a mark of 92; clearly not what he was but some encouragement from his run in a rated race at Galway two weeks ago and he will find his level again. |
(2) Glan | | | | | | 9 | Declan McDonogh | Gordon Elliott | Six-time winner; not much Flat form to go on but won a 1m3f maiden at Roscommon last year and faded late in a 2m1f Bellewstown handicap last month; cheekpieces are left off here and a trip this short has to be a question mark, but she is interesting. |
2nd (5) Expound | | | | | | 5 | J M Sheridan | Denis Gerard Hogan | In fine form this summer with three wins, the two on the Flat both coming over this trip; won with maybe a bit in hand in a Clonmel handicap earlier this month; up just 4lbs for that and unlikely to be far away here. |
(8) Killeaney Bear | | | | | | 3 | Andrew Slattery | Andrew Slattery | Has won three of his last four starts, all over this trip and appreciates fast ground; up a total of 14lb and will not have the ground as quick as he likes, but much improved and a big player. |
Clonmel winner Expound is unlikely to be far away, neither will the improving Killeaney Bear in seeking a fourth win in five starts. Preference is for the veteran SIRJACK THOMAS, who is fine over this trip and underlined his return to form by winning a rated race at Galway two weeks ago. [Justin O'Hanlon]
Race 5: 15:45 Listowel Kevin's Bar, Listowel/Exchange Inn, Ballybunion Handicap IRE 1m 4f
3rd (5) Fairy Wings | | | | | | 3 | Nathan Crosse | W McCreery | Caught the eye in maidens and did well under a big weight on her handicap debut at Clonmel; down 1lb and this step up in trip should be right up her street; makes plenty of appeal. |
(8) Guest Star | | | | | | 3 | Gavin Ryan | Mark Fahey | 20-race maiden; a couple of reasonable efforts in a maiden and a handicap at Ballinrobe during the summer; cut little ice upped to this trip at Roscommon last time and others preferred. |
(10) Lightning Legs | | | | | | 3 | Chris Hayes | Gordon Elliott | Behind Preparations when fourth in a 1m6f handicap at Navan last month; no match at all for Robbies Rock at Navan on Saturday but could sneak into a place if she turns up. |
(2) Question Of Class | | | | | | 3 | Rory Cleary | J S Bolger | Consistent level of form in handicaps over the summer from 1m2f to 1m5f; ran no race in first-time blinkers (discarded here) over this trip at Galway but much better is likely here. |
(6) La Juliana | | | | | | 3 | Scott McCullagh | Kevin Thomas Coleman | Got an 8lb hike for winning a 1m1f handicap at Gowran in June; beaten twice since although was perhaps a shade unlucky over this trip in a 1m4f rated race at Tramore last month; respected. |
(7) Onlyinyourdreams | | | | | | 3 | Keithen Kennedy | Mrs John Harrington | Plenty of promise in a 7f maiden on testing ground at Tipperary in May; has not matched that in two runs since; would appear fairly handicapped stepping up to this trip with a top 7lb claimer on board; interesting. |
(4) Preparations | | | | | | 3 | Andrew Slattery | Andrew Slattery | Mildly progressive in maidens; did not quite seem to get home after travelling to the front in a 1m6f handicap at Navan last month; cheekpieces tried and drops back in trip here; likely to be a contender if there is not too much rain. |
4th (3) Imarajan | | | | | | 3 | Ronan Whelan | M Halford & T Collins | Mild progression in three runs in maidens but somewhat disappointing in a 1m3f handicap at Limerick in June when he was admittedly hampered; gelded since and has had a good long break; could be a factor here upped to 1m4f. |
2nd (1) Robbies Rock | | | | | | 3 | Gary Carroll | Gavin Cromwell | Tongue-tie worked very well when bolting up in a 1m6f handicap at Navan on Saturday; drops back in trip here but is likely to turn up with a hefty hike likely for Saturday's win. |
1st (9) Beyond Your Dreams | | | | | | 3 | Declan McDonogh | Joseph Patrick O'Brien | Earned her handicap mark racing over 5f to 7f; did her best work late in a 1m1f handicap at Tipperary last time; intriguing runner stepping up in trip. |
The drop back in trip could well suit Preparations, as could the first-time cheekpieces, while the step up in trip could be the key to the very interesting Beyond Your Dreams. Onlyinyourdreams is interesting on her handicap debut, while Fairy Wings is likely to appreciate stepping up in trip after a good run at Clonmel. However, such was the authority with which ROBBIES ROCK scored over 1m6f at Navan on Saturday, he is very hard to oppose under a mandatory penalty. [Justin O'Hanlon]
Race 6: 16:20 Listowel John McGuire Handicap (Premier Handicap) IRE 1m 4f
(1) Saltwell | | | | | | 4 | Ronan Whelan | John S O'Donoghue | Dual winner in France over 1m4f and 1m6f on easy ground; last of four in a Listed at Longchamp in May when last seen; hard to assess on her debut for John O'Donoghue and may be best watched. |
(9) Timourid | | | | | | 7 | J M Sheridan | Denis Gerard Hogan | Last of his seven wins came in a 1m1f handicap for Paul Flynn at Leopardstown in June; changed hands after he was well held in a heavy ground claimer at Roscommon; others preferred. |
(2) Weston | | | | | | 5 | Rachael Blackmore | H Rogers | Two-time winner in Germany; lightly raced in Ireland; slightly unlucky in a 1m6f handicap at Navan in May before he was well beaten in the amateur handicap at Galway; chance on his best form but he doesn't seem to produce that very often. |
(11) Belgoprince | | | | | | 7 | Wayne Hassett | Mrs C O'Leary | Has twice run well hurdling this summer, too free over 2m on AW in between; probably failed to stay in the 2m2f Ulster Cesarewitch last time; others more likely. |
(6) Teed Up | | | | | | 7 | Gavin Ryan | Emmet Mullins | Six-time winner, four on the Flat, but has really struggled to find his best form this season on the Flat or over hurdles; down to his lowest mark since winning at Galway last year but others preferred. |
2nd (7) Scholarship | | | | | | 4 | Declan McDonogh | Gerard O'Leary | In good form this season, finishing a close second in the 1m2f Ladies Derby at the Curragh and was not beaten far over too short a trip in the Galway Mile; having his first try over the trip and another interesting runner if he stays; one of two for the stable. |
(8) Derry Lad | | | | | | 6 | Jack Cleary | Kevin Thomas Coleman | Probably should have won a valuable handicap at Epsom in May; not beaten far in a premier handicap over 1m5f at Leopardstown nine days ago; should be competitive if producing his best. |
(5) Vestigia | | | | | | 3 | Gary Carroll | Ms Sheila Lavery | Two-time winner; just did enough in the first-time blinkers in a 1m2f rated contest at Roscommon last time and is left on the same mark here; surprisingly running in his first handicap and has the ability to get involved if he lasts out the trip. |
(10) Jabbar | | | | | | 5 | Keithen Kennedy | Gerard O'Leary | Five-time winner, twice for this stable this season, most recently over 1m6f at Killarney last month; probably outstayed when second over 2m at Clonmel last time; blinkers tried here as he drops back in trip and likely to be a leading contender. |
4th (3) No Niki No | | | | | | 8 | Chris Hayes | E J O'Neill | Eight-time winner and possibly produced a career-best when accounting for subsequent Listed winner Beechwood at Sligo; consistent mare should run her race. |
1st (4) Soaring Monarch | | | | | | 7 | N G McCullagh | Alan McIntyre | Not really one these days to put good runs together; faded close home when an otherwise very good fourth in a premier handicap at the Curragh last Sunday; each-way claims on a good day. |
3rd (12) Thor's Hammer | | | | | | 3 | Jamie Powell | J P Murtagh | Some useful form last year and landed a 1m soft ground maiden at Killarney in May; stepped up to 1m2f to good effect when second in a Naas handicap last month and looked as though stepping up to 1m4f would suit; should make his presence felt. |
Plenty here with chances but they could be a more appealing bunch. The possibly improving Thor's Hammer looks likely to appreciate the trip. Roscommon winner Vestigia should go well in his first handicap, while Ger O'Leary has two decent candidates in Scholarship and Jabbar. The one to beat could well be NO NIKI NO (nap), who has kept her form well and the form of her win at Sligo last time was well advertised by runner-up Beechwood since. [Justin O'Hanlon]
Race 7: 16:55 Listowel Eric Browne Memorial Maiden IRE 1m 4f
(3) Colourful Lil | | | | | | 6 | J M Sheridan | Gillian Scott | Showed nothing in three runs in maiden hurdles for Eoin McCarthy; pulled up in a point-to-point in December; no apparent chance. |
3rd (8) Lagoon Nebula | | | | | | 3 | Nathan Crosse | W McCreery | Did okay on debut over 1m2f at Cork last month; failed to build on that over 1m4f at Bellewstown; qualifies for a mark after this. |
(1) Fiveonefive | | | | | | 6 | Jordan Gainford | Cian Collins | Four wins over hurdles, including the last two runnings of a valuable contest at Cartmel; well beaten in a 2m Tramore maiden last year on his sole Flat start. |
(2) If You Let Me | | | | | | 5 | Gary Carroll | Gavin Cromwell | Kilbeggan maiden hurdle winner; didn't do badly in a 7f maiden at Laytown a week ago; should do better over this trip but more is required. |
(4) Il Sovrano | | | | | | 3 | Declan McDonogh | Joseph Patrick O'Brien | Mildly progressive in three runs in maidens; behind Saol Gaelach at Roscommon last time and needs to find a bit to turn those tables, but could get closer. |
(5) Timurshah | | | | | | 3 | Ronan Whelan | M Halford & T Collins | Three similar runs in maidens from 1m2f to 1m5f; off for a couple of months but needs to find a bit more to land even an ordinary maiden. |
4th (9) Saol Gaelach | | | | | | 3 | Rory Cleary | J S Bolger | Had Il Sovrino behind when runner-up in a Roscommon maiden; little went right at Galway a week later; can get into the shake-up at her best. |
2nd (7) Young Churchill | | | | | | 3 | Jamie Powell | Noel Meade | Showed ability on his first two starts and stepped up on that when third in a big-field 1m2f maiden at the Curragh last month; that race could not have worked out better with winner Fighter winning a premier handicap at Leopardstown and runner-up Ard Na Mara winning a Punchestown maiden; should be thereabouts. |
(10) Strolling | | | | | | 3 | Chris Hayes | D K Weld | Showed plenty of promise in a back-end Gowran maiden; has not really kicked on this season, including over 1m1f in blinkers at Punchestown last week; others preferred. |
1st (6) Trapalanda | | | | | | 3 | Gavin Ryan | P G Fahey | Fine second in a 1m2f Curragh maiden in June and ran to a similar level on heavy ground at Roscommon; trip and this better ground is likely to be ideal for him and he will not need to improve to win this. |
No many of these make that much appeal. Young Churchill ran well in a 1m2f Curragh maiden that has worked out very well, but the twice-placed TRAPALANDA has achieved plenty in defeat both times and will not need to improve to win this. [Justin O'Hanlon]
Race 8: 17:25 Listowel Treo Eile Retraining Ireland's Racehorses Handicap IRE 1m 6f 55y
(8) Rumi | | | | | | 6 | Gavin Ryan | E J O'Grady | Won over this trip at Gowran in April but well held Flat and jumps since; been chasing lately. |
(13) Cafe Con Leche | | | | | | 8 | Chris Hayes | C Byrnes | Four hurdle wins, all on testing ground; maiden in this sphere; ran okay over 1m4f in June but well beaten since; jockey booking is interesting but Redwood Queen looks the yard's main hope. |
(18) Arabian King | | | | | | 8 | | Cian Collins | Third reserve; ready winner of this last year; mostly out of form under both codes since, bar a placed effort over hurdles in May. |
(10) Noble Crusade | | | | | | 6 | Wayne Hassett | John C McConnell | Two AW wins over 1m4f early in the year and has won on soft turf; well backed when running poorly over hurdles in July; has had a spin in a charity race since. |
1st (15) Sir Allen | | | | | | 5 | Andrew Slattery | Andrew Slattery | Fair hurdler ran well in valuable Leopardstown handicap in February and would have needed latest run after a lay-off; little on the Flat since running well at the festival here two years ago; cheekpieces. |
(1) Duty Bound | | | | | | 5 | Conor Stone-Walsh | J P Flavin | Recent chase winner had good form over this trip when trained in Britain a couple of years ago; well beaten in two Flat spins for this yard last year and probably one for jumping nowadays. |
(5) Man Of Action | | | | | | 4 | Luke McAteer | Andrew Kinirons | Nice run at Gowran on debut; stamina in his pedigree and steps up in trip for handicap debut; could go well. |
4th (11) Bold Approach | | | | | | 8 | Rory Cleary | J S Bolger | Long time without a win but some creditable placed efforts on good ground this year; well held on last two starts at Tipperary and cheekpieces discarded. |
(7) The Truant | | | | | | 7 | Keithen Kennedy | Paul W Flynn | Fair dual-purpose performer has run really well on his last two Flat starts, including when just denied in higher grade over 2m at the Curragh on Derby weekend, and has run well a couple of times over hurdles since. |
(3) Rain | | | | | | 5 | Nathan Crosse | James M Barcoe | Lots of good runs, including twice in higher grade at the Curragh this summer, but just struggling to get her head in front; ran poorly in this last year. |
3rd (6) Plains Indian | | | | | | 8 | Sam Coen | Andrew Slattery | Decent hurdler has run respectably in three handicap starts on the level, best effort over this trip at the Curragh last autumn; entitled to come on for Galway fifth after a lay-off. |
(9) Elusive Guy | | | | | | 6 | Ronan Whelan | Jarlath P Fahey | Hurdles winner was creditable third over 2m1f on recent Flat handicap debut at Clonmel. |
(17) Londonofficecallin | | | | | | 7 | | E McNamara | Second reserve; progressive under both codes last year and may have needed last month's return at Sligo. |
(14) Red Secret | | | | | | 8 | Gary Carroll | Kevin Michael Smith | Long time since his two AW wins in Britain but has put in three good shifts since returning from latest lay-off last month; stays well but is up in grade a little. |
2nd (12) Tudor Manor | | | | | | 8 | Robyn Donaghue-Leahy | Patrick J Flynn | Made the breakthrough over 1m4f in May and fair fifth over that trip last time; first time to go this far on the Flat. |
(2) Redwood Queen | | | | | | 7 | N G McCullagh | C Byrnes | Had a beano over hurdles earlier in the summer with four wins, one of them here; after promising Flat debut at Galway, quiet last twice but could be a different story on handicap debut; market crucial. |
(4) Desert Friend | | | | | | 8 | Rachael Blackmore | Mrs Denise Foster | Stays well and won at Ballinrobe in June before finishing a close fourth at Leopardstown; well held latest two starts. |
(16) Grann's Boy | | | | | | 4 | Adam Caffrey | H Rogers | First reserve; fair dual-purpose performer was beaten favourite over 2m last time; blinkers. |
Handicap debutant Redwood Queen looks to be on a potentially lenient mark and she is a danger to all if the market speaks in her favour. Dual-purpose performer THE TRUANT has been in good heart this summer and his last two pieces of Flat form give him good claims. Tudor Manor might be ready for this step up in trip now while Man Of Action is another handicap first-timer to bear in mind. Red Secret comes here in good form but is up in grade and might be placed again at best. [Mark Nunan]
