3rd (1) Dance King | 3 | Wes Marwing | W C Marwing | Some promise; closest he has come to winning after four starts was a third; respectable effort finishing fourth (beaten 1½l) over 6f here (maiden plate) four weeks ago; steps into the unknown over new trip and hard to recommend. | ||||||
1st (7) Heather's Boy | 3 | K Matsunyane | M F De Kock | Related to 7f winner Kyomai; nicely bred (by Rafeef); M F de Kock team does well at Turffontein with debutants; sole newcomer in the field; there's hope from the pedigree that he has some ability; has possibilities with signs of encouragement in profile and breaking from ground-saving draw. | ||||||
2nd (8) Ichacha | 3 | P Mxoli | S T Pettigrew | Third of eight at the first time of asking when not far behind Flight Engineer over C&D at 7-1 four weeks ago; that experience should set him in good stead so has a competitive shout. | ||||||
(2) Zafar | 3 | M Yeni | M Khan | Not disgraced in fourth last month upped to 1m. | ||||||
(3) Flight Engineer | 3 | C Habib | A P Peter | Seems to be going the right way; on the premises when second of eight last month; should not be far away. | ||||||
(4) Lightinthestorm | 3 | J R Syster | S T Pettigrew | Beaten 7l in sixth in a maiden in June; yet to get off the mark in five attempts (fourth his best finish). | ||||||
(5) Chariot Of Fire | 3 | M V'Rensburg | M N Houdalakis | Ran well to finish third on his debut at Vaal over 6f at 4-1 last month; should benefit for having a run under his belt; the stable is going well. | ||||||
(6) Hair Trigger | 3 | G Lerena | R R Magner | Well held in third having been favourite in a maiden juvenile plate in February upped to this trip; returns from a break here; arguably the one to beat as he was strong in the market last time and the penny could well drop today. |
HAIR TRIGGER is the pick of these. Heather's Boy has fared well with the draw, and Flight Engineer is a credible contender.

2nd (2) Future Date | 3 | M Yeni | S J Gray | Few miles on the clock with this her fifth race; not disgraced in fifth over 5f at Vaal (maiden plate) last week; no surprise to see her go well. | ||||||
1st (9) Theatre Of Life | 3 | P Strydom | P/J Vermeulen | Finished last of five on her debut (here, 6f) at 40-1 in June; needs to make above-average progress. | ||||||
3rd (6) Fireburst | 3 | G Lerena | M F De Kock | Finished in front of two of these (Vaal, 6f) at evens two weeks ago; from a respected stable; clear chance if reproducing initial effort. | ||||||
(1) Tipperary | 3 | R Danielson | P F Matchett | Has kicked on in her last couple of races; not beaten far when runner-up 21 days ago; likely to be in contention from a draw which should help and there was plenty to like about her latest performance. | ||||||
(3) Intro | 3 | K Matsunyane | S J Gray | Split Fireburst and Shadow Of The Moon at Vaal over 6f (maiden plate) when beaten 9l last month; has to prove she retains all her ability following some poor runs. | ||||||
(4) Falcon Hill | 3 | N Klink | R R Magner | Beaten 15l in fourth here over 1m (maiden plate) last month; passed over. | ||||||
(5) Ancient Wisdom | 3 | C Habib | A P Peter | Close runner-up on her debut over C&D at 11-2 last month; considered if reproducing initial effort. | ||||||
(7) Lunar Rainbow | 3 | J Penny | P F Matchett | Held on her debut in Vaal maiden plate over 5f (behind Intro) at 50-1 three weeks ago; possible improver with outing under her belt although has plenty to find. | ||||||
(8) Shadow Of The Moon | 3 | M V'Rensburg | M N Houdalakis | Finished last of seven on her debut over 6f at Vaal at 3-1 last month; should benefit for having a run under her belt; the trainer has enjoyed plenty of winners of late. |
Future Date is interesting, and Tipperary has produced plenty of good efforts. However, FIREBURST is a strong pick. She is expected to confirm placings after she got the better of Intro and Shadow Of The Moon when last seen and can step up from her initial second.

(4) Chief Of Staff | 4 | T Mayhew | J A Visser | Finished just behind Madeira Cliffs when sixth over 1m1f here (maiden plate) last month; yet to get off the mark and losing run stands at ten; easy enough to take on with this looking like a hot contest. | ||||||
(9) Howzit Boet | 3 | M Yeni | F Bronkhorst | Not beaten that far in fourth (5l) over 1m at Vaal (maiden, split Gamer and Roll Of The Dice) 16 days ago; easy to see him making an impression. | ||||||
(8) Heroic Act | 3 | P Mxoli | T Zackey | Still looking to open his account after seven runs; not beaten that far in fifth (5l) over 1m here (maiden plate) last Saturday; passed over as a few rivals look in good form. | ||||||
(5) Madeira Cliffs | 4 | K A Brewer | W H Marwing | Comfortably beaten finishing fifth over 1m1f here (maiden plate) 14 days ago; lightly raced (this just his fourth race); not hard to turn elsewhere. | ||||||
3rd (3) Roll Of The Dice | 4 | M V'Rensburg | C Spies | Hasn't been able to quite get his neck in front and winless with run of consecutive defeats standing at 16; split Gamer and Heroic Act when third a week ago over 1m (maiden plate). | ||||||
(6) Gamer | 4 | K Matsunyane | S J Gray | Encouraging effort when second over 1m here (maiden plate) last Saturday; still without a win after 16 starts; cannot be ignored as latest run was an encouraging one and his draw is a positive. | ||||||
2nd (2) Manz Knight | 6 | P Strydom | L Karriem | Last of seven with blinkers tried over 1m1f (maiden plate) last month; has kicked on in his last couple of races; previous run was disappointing, but finished third two starts back; is capable of making an impact. | ||||||
(7) City Lights | 4 | G Lerena | F Bronkhorst | Has maintained her consistent level of form; couldn't quite get the job done when 7-5 runner-up over 1m1f here (maiden plate) last month; she is the only filly in this; has to be taken seriously from ground-saving starting berth and her latest run was promising. | ||||||
1st (1) High Queue | 4 | S Khumalo | C Binda | Was on the premises (second, beaten just under 2l) at Vaal three weeks ago upped to this distance (had two of these rivals behind); series of good efforts to his name; leading contender if building on last performance. |
HIGH QUEUE is a strong fancy. He has been consistent recently and put in an eyecatching run last time out. Manz Knight is one to consider while Gamer and Howzit Boet may have their stamina stretched over this distance, and Gamer is lining up on the back of some good runs.

2nd (5) Explosive Bond | 4 | P Mxoli | P F Matchett | Slumped a bit since winning a Listed race at Turffontein in January but knows how to win here; comfortably beaten finishing fifth over 1m here (stakes race) last month. | ||||||
1st (4) Raiseahallelujah | 7 | M Yeni | C Dawson | Specialist here with four wins; behind Prime Example back down to this trip when better was expected (went off 2-1) last month; Muzi Yeni a noteworthy booking; likely player. | ||||||
(1) Zeus | 6 | G Lerena | F P Habib | Finished tailed off upped to 2m 48 days ago behind Raiseahallelujah, at Greyville in a Grade 3; specialist here with six wins; strong claims as reverting to this trip sure to suit and lower class is a plus. | ||||||
(2) Good Council | 5 | J R Syster | S T Pettigrew | Patchy form recently but winner of four races (1m½f-1m4f); went down by just under 2l when second over 1m1f here (stakes race) last month; if he is able to build on his most recent effort then should not be far away. | ||||||
(7) Absolute Value | 6 | M K Katjedi | F P Habib | Winner of six races from 1m½f to 1m6f but struggled a bit since winning a stakes race at Turffontein in December; finished tailed off last month 22l behind Prime Example; this line-up contains some strong opposition so easy to oppose. | ||||||
(8) Crepuscolo | 4 | J Gates | F P Habib | Finished last of seven last month (Vaal) upped to 1m4f in a handicap; a while since his last success and has lacked consistency of late; this looks a fair heat so easy to oppose. |
Good Council has been knocking on the door of late, and the otherwise interesting Special Charm has a stamina query to answer at this trip. However, ZEUS has to be the first name on the shortlist. He is fancied to reverse the placings with Raiseahallelujah from their last meeting and is going for his seventh course success.

2nd (1) Twin Turbo | 7 | G Lerena | F P Habib | Beaten 7l three weeks ago; has gained four wins over course and distance; cannot be ignored as the handicapper has given him a chance and he has overcome this mark before. | ||||||
3rd (11) American Biscuit | 5 | K Matsunyane | W C Marwing | Finished out the back last month upped to 1m2f; useful at this level; did finish a good second two runs back and in with a shout. | ||||||
1st (5) Apache Son | 4 | P Mxoli | T Zackey | Managed two wins in his last four outings; won a handicap by 1l at Vaal upped to 1m½f with Celtic Rush (fourth) and Whispers Of War (fifth) behind five weeks ago; competing off a higher mark; can be on the premises. | ||||||
(2) Atarime | 4 | M Yeni | P F Matchett | Won a stakes race by just over 1l last month; going for a hat-trick; jockey booking is a positive; strong contender with the ground-saving draw. | ||||||
(3) Weather Wizard | 4 | C Habib | F Bronkhorst | Useful in this grade but been generally quiet since successful in a handicap at Turffontein in May; beaten 6l in a stakes race when back to 1m2f at Vaal last month; notable rider booked. | ||||||
(4) Al Akhtaar | 4 | M K Katjedi | B B Ruiters | Behind Atarime here when finishing last of seven last month in a stakes race; hard enough to fancy. | ||||||
(6) Celtic Rush | 5 | M V'Rensburg | D Nieuwenhuizen | Loves this venue (three wins from 15 course runs) and has maintained his consistent level of form; fair effort when just over 2l fourth to Apache Son over 1m½f at Vaal (handicap) last month. | ||||||
(8) Whispers Of War | 7 | S Khumalo | C Spies | A while since his last success but can be a player at this level; failed to land a blow when ninth of 13 over 7½f at Vaal (handicap) last month. | ||||||
(9) Douglas Dragon | 4 | J Penny | M Khan | Off the mark at the seventh time of asking when winning by 2l (Vaal) 53 days ago in a maiden plate. | ||||||
(10) Fushimi Inari | 4 | J R Syster | S T Pettigrew | Has a record of 1-15; solid effort when beaten just over 2l to finish third last month. |
Apache Son might have a say, and Twin Turbo must be considered. However, ATARIME gets the vote. He looks to have claims of extending his winning run and is a two-time course winner.

---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
1st (1) Dyce | 6 | P Strydom | M N Houdalakis | Finished 11th in the Grade 1 Golden Horse Sprint at Scottsville in June; achieved three wins at this venue; form of the trainer is a plus; dropping in class a definite plus and no surprise to see him go well. | ||||||
2nd (3) Rulership | 5 | C Habib | A P Peter | Unable to land a blow in ninth over 6f here (stakes race) last month; hasn't won for a while but although below par last time out, is better than that judged on previous efforts; jockey booking heightens interest. | ||||||
3rd (9) Cosmic Star | 5 | K Matsunyane | J J Van Vuuren | Finished ninth but wasn't beaten too far (just over 4l) when he was behind several of these rivals in May; knows this place inside out (three course wins); draw is a plus so can't be ruled out. | ||||||
(2) William Robertson | 6 | G Lerena | C Spies | Season-ticket holder here with six wins; creditable fourth when behind the reopposing Mover And Shaker six months ago in a Grade 3; returns from a layoff here; now down in class and holds leading claims. | ||||||
(4) Mover And Shaker | 5 | R Danielson | F P Habib | Split Rulership and Sheldon when third 53 days ago (Vaal); has an impressive record over course and distance (three wins from 11 runs). | ||||||
(5) Sheldon | 6 | J J Van Vuuren | A prolific C&D winner; respectable display to finish fourth, beaten just under 3l at Vaal 53 days ago. | |||||||
(6) Anfields Rocket | 5 | M Yeni | G J Maroun | A four-time course winner; close up second over 6f here (stakes race) last month with two of these rivals behind; Muzi Yeni a noteworthy booking; interesting as recent display was promising and breaking from ground-saving draw. | ||||||
(8) Red Bomber | 4 | J J Van Vuuren | Normally pretty consistent; solid run when third over 7f at Greyville (Grade 3) in March; layoff to overcome; is respected if finding his best form and dropping in class. | |||||||
(10) Mist In Scotland | 4 | M K Katjedi | P F Matchett | All three career wins over this trip; came home fourth, beaten 6l, in a handicap at Vaal three weeks ago; the only filly in the race; facing a testing assignment and only limited appeal. | ||||||
(11) Halberdier | 4 | P Mxoli | B B Ruiters | Finished just behind Cliff Hanger when seventh two weeks ago in a Listed race; others appeal more despite dropping in class. |
Anfields Rocket is an interesting contender with an ideal draw, and Red Bomber, Dyce and Anfields Rocket are C&D winners. However, firm preference is for WILLIAM ROBERTSON. He is taken to reverse placings with some of these and he knows how to win.

2nd (2) Cape Lights | 5 | M Yeni | R R Sage | Knows how to win here; far from disgraced (beaten 2½l) over 1m at Scottsville (Listed race) last month; jockey booking is a positive; dropping in class a definite plus and ought to be considered. | ||||||
3rd (8) Bob's Your Uncle | 5 | K A Brewer | M N Houdalakis | Mostly consistent recently; finished a decent runner-up of seven behind Max The Magician five weeks ago; a rise in the ratings to contend with but the stable has enjoyed plenty of winners of late; on the shortlist. | ||||||
1st (5) Max The Magician | 4 | G Lerena | R R Magner | Ran a bit below expectations (sent off evens) when third in a stakes race two weeks ago; knows how to win here. | ||||||
(1) Platina Princess | 4 | K Matsunyane | M F De Kock | Finished last of 11 over 6f here (conditions race) when dropped in distance 14 days ago; this is her grade and from powerful trainer. | ||||||
(3) Thunderstone | 5 | T Mayhew | R R Magner | Last of 11 last month in a Listed race; is passed over despite dropping in class. | ||||||
(4) Warhawk Bomber | 4 | R Danielson | W C Marwing | Behind Max The Magician when finishing fifth last month; wins-runs record of 3-12; likely to be thereabouts from a beneficial draw. | ||||||
(6) Princeofgreen | 4 | P Mxoli | P F Matchett | Subpar since successful in a handicap at Vaal in December; didn't run too badly when out of the frame here (beaten 5l) last month in a graduation plate; a few rivals look in good form so others make more appeal. | ||||||
(7) Brave Viking | 5 | M V'Rensburg | J A Soma | Knows how to win here; just under 2l behind the winner, Max The Magician, five weeks ago; recent display was promising so big run on the cards. | ||||||
(9) King's Ransom | 4 | S Khumalo | C Dawson | Unable to land a blow in sixth over 1m at Vaal (handicap) last Thursday. |
Cape Lights is expected to be in the thick of things while Warhawk Bomber looks well drawn. But BRAVE VIKING gets a firm vote. He can overturn the form with a few of his rivals.

3rd (3) Trident King | 6 | C Habib | D Nieuwenhuizen | Hasn't won for a while but specialist here with three wins; last of nine at Vaal over 1m½f (handicap) last month; Calvin Habib a good booking. | ||||||
2nd (10) Wolf Mountain | 3 | M Yeni | M F De Kock | Finished last of five in June in a juvenile plate; just his fifth outing so still early days; represents top trainer; notable jockey booking; is respected if excused most recent run as achieved maiden juvenile plate success two runs back and has proved he knows how to win. | ||||||
(1) We Are The Logans | 4 | P Strydom | A P Peter | Third of nine when sent off 25-1 three weeks ago at Vaal in a stakes race; achieved only a sole win; has to be respected if building on promise shown last time and the longer distance is likely to help. | ||||||
(2) Turbo Power | 5 | T Mayhew | S G Tarry | Represents top stable; narrow scorer in a handicap (dropped to 6f) 14 days ago; edging up the ratings; in the mix despite having more on his plate. | ||||||
(5) Coppola | 4 | J Penny | M Khan | Solid effort when beaten 1½l to finish third over 5½f at Vaal (handicap) two weeks ago; now competes off a higher mark; could have a say. | ||||||
(6) Luthuli | 5 | M K Katjedi | F P Habib | Behind Run For Cover when towards the rear of 13 at Vaal last month; this looks a decent race so hard to recommend. | ||||||
(7) Flamboyant Flyer | 4 | D De Gouveia | C Mayhew | Finished 11th of 12 at Greyville in July; form lately has been a mixed bag and low strike-rate of 1-16; the only filly in the race; a few rivals look in good form so hard to recommend. | ||||||
(8) Kashkaval | 5 | N Klink | M Khan | Finished behind Coppola at Vaal over 5½f (handicap) when beaten 10l 16 days ago; useful in this grade; managed two wins in his last five outings. | ||||||
(9) Thambi | 5 | K A Brewer | L Karriem | Likes it here (three wins); beaten 8l over 1m at Vaal (handicap) 24 days ago; makes limited appeal with a few rivals in good form. |
The suggestion is WE ARE THE LOGANS. He appeals based on the strength of his latest effort. C&D winner Turbo Power is respected while this distance may be a bit longer than Coppola wants, and Run For Cover looks well drawn.
