Race 1: 13:10 Leopardstown Ballylinch Stud Irish EBF Ingabelle Stakes (Listed Race) (Fillies) IRE 7f
(10) Unexpected Issues | | | | | | 2 | Seamie Heffernan | J A Stack | Sent off favourite when making a winning debut at Navan (5f, yielding) in May, doing best work at the finish; she ran well below that level when upped to 6f in Curragh Group 3 latest; sister to smart sprinter Castle Star so this trip could stretch her. |
2nd (5) Garden Of Eden | | | | | | 2 | Ronan Whelan | A P O'Brien | Saxon Warrior filly got off the mark on her second start at Naas (7f, good to yielding) under talented claimer Jack Cleary; next run possibly came too soon when disappointing in 1m Curragh Group 3 six days later; plenty to prove at present but the drop in trip should suit. |
(6) Indigo Dream | | | | | | 2 | Gary Carroll | Ross O'Sullivan | Seventh behind Bedtime Story here on debut; took a big leap forward when runner-up to the highly regarded Red Letter at the Curragh in July; no match for Chantez when second over C&D last time but she's well worth her place in the field; each-way possibilities. |
(1) And So To Bed | | | | | | 2 | Declan McDonogh | Joseph Patrick O'Brien | Fourth in strong maiden on debut over 6f at the Curragh in May; didn't see out the 7f when fifth at the same venue a month later; impressive winner over slightly shorter at this track in July (the runner-up has gone in twice since); fifth in the 6f Ballyhane Stakes last time at Naas and more needed to trouble the principals here. |
(8) Nancy J | | | | | | 2 | Shane Foley | Mrs John Harrington | Ten Sovereigns filly who justified strong late market support when winning her maiden at Gowran (7f, good to firm) last month; the second has won since to give the form a boost; needed every yard of the trip on the day and is bred to get much further so she'll be doing her best work at the finish. |
4th (4) Easy Mover | | | | | | 2 | W J Lee | A P O'Brien | Very green when making a winning debut at Fairyhouse (6f, good) in June; she disappointed in the Group 2 Airlie Stud Stakes at the Curragh when last seen; holds a Group 1 entry but she's going to have to improve a good deal to play a major role in this company. |
(7) Mojave River | | | | | | 2 | Dylan Browne McMonagle | Joseph Patrick O'Brien | 105,000euros 2yo; fourth foal; half-sister to winners Aikido (7f 2yo/6f AW; RPR 89) and Margaret's Fuschia (7.5f; 71); dam placed in Germany, half-sister to German 1m3f Group 3 winner Quelle Amore and German 1m2f/French 1m4f Listed winner Quidamo; created a good impression when winning a 7f Deauville maiden on debut last month and she could be smart. |
3rd (2) Bubbling | | | | | | 2 | Ryan Moore | A P O'Brien | Ran green when fourth behind stablemate Exactly here on debut; put that experience to good use when scoring readily in a 7f fillies' maiden at Galway in July; non-runner in the Group 2 Debutante Stakes at the Curragh last month due to the going (good); Group 1-entered and probably wants some juice in the ground but a big player. |
1st (3) Chantez | | | | | | 2 | Colin Keane | G M Lyons | Finished in front of Bubbling when runner-up to Exactly here on debut; that winner gave one of the most exciting juveniles in training Bedtime Story a good race at the Curragh since; Ger Lyons has won two of the last three runnings of this race and she looked potentially high-class when winning a C&D maiden last month; the one to beat. |
In front of Bubbling on debut and an impressive winner over C&D when last seen, CHANTEZ has the strongest form in the book and can give trainer Ger Lyons a third win in the race in four years. Joseph O'Brien's Mojave River won a Deauville maiden on debut and could be anything, while Indigo Dream is well worth her place in the lineup and has place possibilities. Nancy J is another with a chance. [Adrian Wall]
Race 2: 13:40 Leopardstown KPMG Champions Juvenile Stakes (Group 2) IRE 1m
4th (4) Green Triangle | | | | | | 2 | Dylan Browne McMonagle | Joseph Patrick O'Brien | Placed twice, including a conditions event here, before readily landing 7.5f Roscommon maiden (good) in July; he was set to follow up over 1m at Killarney next time having gone clear before crashing through the rails inside final 110yds; folded tamely when third in Listed contest at Tipperary, 2l clear turning into the straight; looks well up against it in this company. |
3rd (1) Bernard Shaw | | | | | | 2 | Declan McDonogh | A P O'Brien | Cost $1.8 million as a yearling; finished behind Green Impact when a promising fourth on his Curragh debut (7f, good), staying on well to the line after being outpaced early; appreciated the step up to 1m when landing the odds by 9l in a Dundalk maiden last month; holds lofty entries but Ryan Moore has opted to ride Delacroix which would suggest he's the stable second string. |
1st (3) Green Impact | | | | | | 2 | Shane Foley | Mrs John Harrington | Wootton Bassett colt shaped with plenty of promise when second on debut over 7f at the Curragh, forcing the pace and finding plenty for pressure; his experience told when seeing off the green Delacroix over C&D in July; holds multiple Group 1 entries and will give the likely favourite plenty to think about again. |
2nd (2) Delacroix | | | | | | 2 | Ryan Moore | A P O'Brien | Huge run in second over C&D on debut in July when chasing home Green Impact who had the benefit of experience on the day; restless in the stalls when last seen over 7f at the Curragh, he broke out smartly and made all to win in style; three subsequent winners have come out of the race and he's the choice of Ryan Moore; should be a more mature horse now and can get the better of his main rival on this occasion. |
Green Impact will have plenty of form judges on his side as he got the better of DELACROIX in a C&D maiden, but Aidan O'Brien's colt landed the odds in style at the Curragh last time and is held in very high regard. He can reserve the form. Jockey bookings would suggest Bernard Shaw has work to do to beat the likely favourite but must be respected after his 9l demolition at Dundalk. [Adrian Wall]
Race 3: 14:15 Leopardstown Tonybet Solonaway Stakes (Group 2) IRE 1m
(1) Bold Discovery | | | | | | 4 | Shane Foley | Mrs John Harrington | Three-time winner and started off the season by winning the Group 3 Amethyst Stakes over C&D in May; well beaten twice since but coming back to 1m will suit; looks up against it though. |
(7) Power Under Me | | | | | | 6 | James Ryan | G M Lyons | Winner of six of his 21 starts; creditable second in a C&D Listed race in April; not at his best when fourth of five in C&D Group 3 event in May; took advantage of drop in class when winning a 7f conditions race at Naas last time; needs it much softer though. |
(8) Gregarina | | | | | | 5 | Declan McDonogh | Joseph Patrick O'Brien | Four-time winner started off the season in good fashion by winning the Athasi Stakes at the Curragh; not as effective on better ground twice since and unlikely to have her favoured conditions here. |
(9) Bright Stripes | | | | | | 3 | W J Lee | A Oliver | Readily landed a soft ground Tetrarch Stakes in the spring but has not had his ground since and has been thoroughly exposed; tongue-tie tried but others make far more appeal. |
(2) Flight Plan | | | | | | 4 | Clifford Lee | K R Burke | Won this race last year but mostly out of form this year; some revival may come with the return to this venue but hard to fancy at present. |
2nd (5) Mutasarref | | | | | | 6 | Colin Keane | G M Lyons | Nine-time winner and in the form of his life this year with three wins, including a narrow defeat of Mountain Bear and Lord Massusus in the C&D Desmond Stakes; has earned his place here but likely to find one or two too good. |
3rd (12) Mountain Bear | | | | | | 3 | Chris Hayes | A P O'Brien | Mostly progressive this season, culminating in a good second when left a lot to do in the Desmond Stakes; could turn tables with Mutasarref and get involved. |
(3) Lord Massusus | | | | | | 4 | Gary Carroll | Joseph G Murphy | Six-time winner, including the Group 3 Desmond Stakes over C&D last year; in good form this year, winning a Curragh Listed and a close third to Mutasarref when attempting a repeat success in the Desmond; unlikely to be good enough but could get into the frame. |
(11) Galen | | | | | | 3 | Dylan Browne McMonagle | Joseph Patrick O'Brien | Hosed up in a Curragh maiden before beating subsequent Listed winner Beechwood in a Killarney conditons event; beaten fair and square behind three of these in the Desmond Stakes last month; others preferred. |
4th (6) Poker Face | | | | | | 5 | James Doyle | Simon & Ed Crisford | Rounded off last season with three straight wins on ground with an ease; good second in Group 2 contests this year at Sandown and Goodwood; unlikely to get enough rain to enhance his claims though. |
(4) Maljoom | | | | | | 5 | Tom Marquand | William Haggas | Lightly raced performer; has come back this year with solid Group 1 form when third in the Queen Anne Stakes and second in the Sussex Stakes; did not get home in the International at York when racing too freely; cheekpieces applied here and will take the beating if running to his best. |
1st (10) Diego Velazquez | | | | | | 3 | Ryan Moore | A P O'Brien | Good fourth in the French 2,000 Guineas to start the year, and having tried 1m4f looked far more at home when bolting up in the Group 3 Meld Stakes here in July over 1m1f; back to 1m should not be an issue and looks a leading player. |
Poker Face and Mountain Bear could be capable of getting involved, but this looks like it could be between two principals. The drop back to a mile after his runaway win in the Meld Stakes should hold no fears for Diego Velazquez. However, the proven Group 1 form shown over a mile by MALJOOM (nap) in the Queen Anne and Sussex Stakes will make him hard to beat. [Justin O'Hanlon]
Race 4: 14:50 Leopardstown Coolmore America 'Justify' Matron Stakes (Group 1) (Fillies & Mares) IRE 1m
(1) Magical Sunset | | | | | | 4 | Ronan Whelan | Adrian Murray | 7f Group 3 success last term on soft ground for Richard Hannon; best recent effort was over 1m when fourth at Ascot (good to firm) in June; has 7l to find with Porta Fortuna on Falmouth Stakes run at Newmarket when last seen; readily passed over in this company. |
(2) Mammas Girl | | | | | | 4 | Robert Whearty | Adrian Murray | Won Group 3 Nell Gwyn last year for Richard Hannon; never managed to find that form again for Hannon and struggled on first four starts for current yard this term; first-time blinkers helped when third in 7f Listed race at Cork last month but again only ran okay when fourth in Tipperary Group 3 when last seen; she's going to struggle in this grade. |
(9) Wendla | | | | | | 3 | Colin Keane | G M Lyons | Won a 1m maiden at Naas in March and landed a Group 3 over C&D in May; stamina stretched when poor effort next time over 1m2f at the Curragh and made little impact in two subsequent starts since (Group 3 contests here and at Tipperary); difficult to recommend. |
(8) Vespertilio | | | | | | 3 | W J Lee | W McCreery | Group 2 winner last year in the 7f Debutante Stakes at the Curragh, before finishing an excellent second to Fallen Angel in the Group 1 Moyglare Stud; good run on reappearance when third in French Group 1 at Longchamp in May but disappointed when sent off 4-1 for the Irish 1,000 Guineas next time; drop back to 7f failed to bring about improvement in French Group 1 at Deauville in July; each-way possibilities if she can find her best. |
3rd (7) Soprano | | | | | | 3 | Billy Loughnane | George Boughey | Improved for the step up to 1m when winning the Sandringham Stakes at Royal Ascot from a mark of 100; ran well up in grade twice subsequently before bagging 1m French Group 3 at Deauville last month; worth a crack at a Group 1 again off the back of that run but she will probably fall short. |
(3) Rogue Millennium | | | | | | 5 | Dylan Browne McMonagle | Joseph Patrick O'Brien | Not the most prolific strike-rate for one of her ability but landed a Group 2 at Royal Ascot last season (1m, good) when with Tom Clover and she has been running well in defeat this year for her new yard, third behind Porta Fortuna in the Group 1 Falmouth at Newmarket's July meeting and beaten just over 2l in the Group 1 Prix Rothschild at Deauville since; each-way possibilities. |
(5) Jancis | | | | | | 3 | Declan McDonogh | W McCreery | Created a big impression when winning her maiden at this track (7f, good to yielding) in June; she produced an electric turn of foot when flying home from rear to win the 7f Group 3 Brownstown Stakes here a month later; Billy Lee rode her with bags of confidence on both occasions and her change of gear is really impressive; Fiesolana won this race in 2014 for the yard and this filly could be every bit as good as her. |
4th (10) Ylang Ylang | | | | | | 3 | Ryan Moore | A P O'Brien | Three wins from five starts at two, including a 7f Group 3 at this venue and Group 1 Fillies' Mile at Newmarket; looked in need of further when staying on for a close-up fifth in the 1,000 Guineas on seasonal reappearance; disappointed when favourite for the Oaks, unable to handle the quirks of Epsom and didn't seem to stay; slowly away when no better in C&D Group 3 last time; clearly has lots of ability but is proving costly to follow. |
2nd (4) Fallen Angel | | | | | | 3 | James Doyle | K R Burke | Versatile ground-wise and very progessive over 7f last season; won the Sweet Solera at Newmarket and the Group 1 Moyglare Stud Stakes at the Curragh, accounting for Vespertilio; lack of a run probably cost her when down the field in the 1,000 Guineas at Newmarket but she was right at her best when bolting up in the Irish equivalent last time; hasn't been seen since May but a huge force if she can reproduce that run. |
1st (6) Porta Fortuna | | | | | | 3 | Tom Marquand | Donnacha Aidan O'Brien | Top-class performer who handles any ground and her form figures read 1112312211 which proves her consistency; won the Group 1 Cheveley Park at Newmarket last year before finishing second in Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf at Santa Anita; close second in the 1,000 Guineas on seasonal reappearance before going one better in the Coronation Stakes to register a second Royal Ascot win; better than ever when winning the Group 1 Falmouth Stakes at Newmarket last time; class act and will take a top performance to beat her. |
Willie McCreery had his best day as a trainer when Fiesolana won this race in 2014 and JANCIS might prove to be every bit as good as she was. The list of dangers include Porta Fortuna who is already a three-time Group 1 winner and looked right at her best when landing the Falmouth Stakes at Newmarket last time, and Fallen Angel who comes here off the back of a devastating win in the Irish 1,000 Guineas. Rogue Millennium could be of serious interest for the place money, while Ylang Ylang clearly has lots of ability but needs to find improvement from somewhere. [Adrian Wall]
Race 5: 15:25 Leopardstown Royal Bahrain Irish Champion Stakes (Group 1) IRE 1m 2f
(2) Hans Andersen | | | | | | 4 | Chris Hayes | A P O'Brien | Group 3 winner last year; in here very much in a pacemaking role today. |
(4) Royal Rhyme | | | | | | 4 | Clifford Lee | K R Burke | Five-time winner and started off the season winning the Brigadier Gerard at Sandown; not disgraced but exposed in better company since and unlikely to contend here. |
3rd (8) Shin Emperor | | | | | | 3 | Ryusei Sakai | Yoshito Yahagi | This seems to have been targeted since he was third in the Japanese Derby in May; impossible to assess, but given the reputation of Japanese horses when travelling in recent years is hard to dismiss. |
(3) Luxembourg | | | | | | 5 | Declan McDonogh | A P O'Brien | Close second to Auguste Rodin in this last year and his best effort since when winning the 1m4f Coronation Cup at Epsom in May; well below his best in the King George last time; cheekpieces tried here and capable of a big run at his best. |
4th (7) Los Angeles | | | | | | 3 | Dylan Browne McMonagle | A P O'Brien | Only defeat came when third to City Of Troy at Epsom; did enough to win the Irish Derby and the Great Voltigeur since; intriguing dropped back in trip and hard to know what to expect. |
(6) Ghostwriter | | | | | | 3 | Richard Kingscote | Clive Cox | Unbeaten at two; has found it tougher this season but has yet to run a bad race, including against City Of Troy last twice; similar result here looks the likeliest outcome but will make his presence felt. |
2nd (1) Auguste Rodin | | | | | | 4 | Ryan Moore | A P O'Brien | Can mix the brilliant and the terrible, but has still won six Group 1s, including two Derbies and when just outpointing Luxembourg in this race last year; has to bounce back from an ordinary effort in the King George in July but has proved more than adept at doing so in the past. |
1st (5) Economics | | | | | | 3 | Tom Marquand | William Haggas | Unbeaten this season, bolting up in the Dante Stakes in May before landing a Group 2 at Deauville last month; he is all potential, this is by far his sternest examination to date and he will have to be a very good horse to pass it. |
An intriguing race. Los Angeles is fascinating dropping back in trip and should not be underestimated, while the presence of Japanese horse Shin Emperor adds another layer to this contest. Potential is the keyword with likely favourite Economics, but this is by far his stiffest examination to date. Preference is for last year's winner AUGUSTE RODIN, who has to bounce back from a poor run at Ascot, but it's nothing he has not done before. [Justin O'Hanlon]
Race 6: 16:00 Leopardstown Tonybet 'We're Here To Play' Stakes (Group 3) IRE 1m 4f
(10) La Familia | | | | | | 3 | Ryusei Sakai | Yoshito Yahagi | Japanese raider won 1m4f Hanshin maiden in March but tailed off last in three subsequent starts; little chance on all known form. |
3rd (6) Thunder Roll | | | | | | 4 | Declan McDonogh | Joseph Patrick O'Brien | Twice a Listed winner at 1m4f, including at Cork on seasonal reappearance; failed to confirm the form of that race with runner-up Sumiha in a Group 3 over the same C&D in June; cheekpieces reached for now but she wants soft in the description (non-runner at Fairyhouse in July due to good ground). |
(7) Chantilly | | | | | | 3 | Gary Carroll | A P O'Brien | Held his form without winning in some competitive handicaps this year, beaten 4l at Royal Ascot in June over this trip before a fair Newmarket sixth; he disappointed at the Galway festival when last seen but his high draw didn't aid his cause (six of the first seven home had single-digit draws); this is a tough assignment but stable has won four of last six runnings and the 3yo allowance will be a help. |
(2) Layfayette | | | | | | 7 | Colin Keane | Noel Meade | Multiple winner, including at Listed/minor Group level; 2023 highlight was winning Curragh Group 3 (1m2f, good) in August but disappointed in 1m2f Listed race here in October; last seen finishing last of 14 in the Group 2 Bahrain International Trophy in November; plenty to prove after a lengthy absence. |
(5) Yashin | | | | | | 5 | W J Lee | Mrs John Harrington | Shaped encouragingly when running on behind top stayer Kyprios at this venue over 1m6f in May; step up to 2m on the AW wasn't to his liking next time in the Northumberland Plate at Newcastle; had wind surgery before running a poor race in the Ebor at York last month; more needed. |
(8) Euphoric | | | | | | 3 | Ryan Moore | A P O'Brien | Maiden winner on debut last October; has done the donkey work up front in all five races this season; best form when second to Los Angeles in a 1m2f Group 3 at this track in May; well beaten in Derby and Irish Derby, and again set hard fractions when last in the Great Voltigeur last time; the choice of Ryan Moore but there's a chance he could be on the wrong one. |
2nd (9) Kinesiology | | | | | | 3 | Shane Foley | Mrs John Harrington | Narrowly beaten in a couple of Listed races over 1m4f by Ballydoyle 3yos but improved for the step up to 1m6f when crossing the line in front in Listed Vinnie Roe Stakes here last month; subsequently demoted to second after an enquiry; each-way contender. |
4th (3) Sumiha | | | | | | 4 | Chris Hayes | D K Weld | Beat the reopposing Thunder Roll by a half length in 1m2f Curragh maiden on debut last August; didn't appear again until a half length behind the same rival in 1m4f Cork Listed contest in April when an unlucky loser; only found Candleford too good next time at the Curragh but impressed when landing the Munster Oaks at Cork when last seen; respected. |
(1) Klondike | | | | | | 4 | Tom Marquand | William Haggas | Promise at Listed/Group 3 level as a 3yo and duly improved to win a York Listed race (1m6f, good to soft) in June; he ran as though something was amiss in a Group 3 there next time but got right back to his best when landing a French Group 3 at Deauville (12.5f, good) last month; carries a penalty here but must be respected. |
1st (4) Trustyourinstinct | | | | | | 4 | Dylan Browne McMonagle | Joseph Patrick O'Brien | Has quietly built into a Group class performer this season, landing a Tramore maiden hurdle by 11l in May before landing a Gowran conditions for the second year running in June; ran subequent Glorious Goodwood winner Jan Brueghel close in 1m2f Curragh Group 3 next time and gave St Leger winner Continuous a good race when last seen finishing second at that same venue on ground faster than what he'd like; big player. |
Trustyourinstinct has some rock solid form in the book and looks set to be right in the mix, while Muster Oaks winner Sumiha impressed at Cork and has a progressive profile. The narrow vote goes to likely outsider CHANTILLY, who was only beaten 4l at Royal Ascot and the race could be set up nicely for him if stablemate Euphoric employs his usual front-running tactics. William Haggas sends recent French Group 3 winner Klondike across and he also commands respect. [Adrian Wall]
Race 7: 16:35 Leopardstown Irish Stallion Farms EBF Petingo Handicap (Premier Handicap) IRE 1m 5f
(16) Derry Lad | | | | | | 6 | Wesley Joyce | Kevin Thomas Coleman | Four-time winner and should have added to that tally at Epsom in May; well beaten in good handicaps last twice and others preferred. |
(18) New Year Honours | | | | | | 5 | Keithen Kennedy | Gordon Elliott | Readily accounted for No Niki No in a Down Royal fillies' handicap in July; below her best off 8lb higher in the Tipperary Cup last time and others preferred. |
(21) Mo Ghille Mar | | | | | | 3 | Nathan Crosse | Mrs John Harrington | First past the post three times this season, losing a race at Leopardstown before winning a Navan maiden and a Killarney handicap; well below her best at York last month; others preferred; 2lb wrong. |
(14) No Niki No | | | | | | 8 | N G McCullagh | E J O'Neill | Eight-time winner and possibly produced a career-best when accounting for subsequent Listed winner Beechwood at Sligo; consistent mare should run her race. |
(15) Oriole | | | | | | 5 | Leigh Roche | Miss Natalia Lupini | Scored on her third run for the yard when readily landing a 1m4f handicap at Galway; 6lb rise not excessive although might need some luck in running from her inside draw. |
(20) Firstman | | | | | | 7 | Siobhan Rutledge | Mrs C O'Leary | Six-time winner but nothing in two runs this season suggest he can contend here; 2lb wrong. |
(17) En Or | | | | | | 6 | James Ryan | Mrs C O'Leary | Sixth career win when landing the 2m Tipperary Cup at Clonmel last week; much more needed but not underestimated. |
(3) My Lyka | | | | | | 5 | Rachael Blackmore | W P Mullins | Dual winner in France; touched off in a Killarney novice hurdle on his stable debut before being tailed off in the Ascot Stakes; not seen since; clearly better than that but very hard to assess and might just be best watched. |
(2) Satin | | | | | | 4 | Shane Foley | Mrs John Harrington | 5lb lower when beating Comfort Zone in this race last year; not at her best in two runs this season at Gowran and York; others look more likely. |
(23) The Names Jock | | | | | | 8 | Robert Whearty | John E & Thomas Kiely | Useful dual-purpose handicapper missed last year; has gradually refound form this term, runner-up in last two Flat starts and fair hurdling fifth last time; stays well and could go well; 2lb wrong. |
3rd (1) Eagle's Way | | | | | | 5 | Chris Hayes | William Durkan | Four-time winner in Britain and has not taken a backward step since joining his current stable, winning a Bellewstown amateur race and grinding out a very game success in a premier handicap at Galway; well-drawn for a horse that will go forward, and despite top weight, he will be a tough nut to crack. |
(7) Ameerat Jumaira | | | | | | 4 | Ronan Whelan | M Halford & T Collins | Lightly raced filly and comes here bang in form after winning a premier handicap at Dundalk and a 1m4f fillies' handicap at the Curragh; could still have more to offer and looks a leading player with the step up in trip a likely plus. |
(13) Lot Of Joy | | | | | | 6 | Billy Loughnane | W P Mullins | Former Swedish Leger winner; some big runs on the Flat for Closutton, especially a close third in the Irish Cesarewitch in 2022; decent efforts in premier handicaps this year at the Curragh and Killarney; each-way claims. |
(22) Suprise Package | | | | | | 8 | Jamie Powell | Peter Fahey | Good hurdler, won the Imperial Cup at Sandown two years ago; has come back well after a layoff, winning a Ballinrobe maiden over this trip last time; 2lb wrong but could still have plenty to offer on the Flat. |
(4) Smooth Tom | | | | | | 5 | Andrew Slattery | Andrew Slattery | Two-time winner over hurdles and gained a third win on the Flat when winning the four-runner McEnery Cup at Gowran last month; consistent performer at a variety of trips and should run his race here. |
(9) Bialystok | | | | | | 6 | Tom Marquand | W P Mullins | Frustrating over hurdles, less so on the Flat; followed up a below-par effort at the Curragh with a fast finish when fifth to Eagle's Way at Galway; has the ability to get involved. |
(12) Spasiba | | | | | | 5 | Seamie Heffernan | W P Mullins | Lightly raced; won a Roscommon maiden for Paddy Twomey in 2022; ran very well on his stable debut when second in the amateur handicap at Galway despite racing too keen; one for the shortlist. |
5th (8) Barnso | | | | | | 3 | W J Lee | Miss Natalia Lupini | Progressive form this year, winning a 1m2f handicap at Fairyhouse in May and performing above his mark when a close third in the Vinnie Roe Stakes awarded to Chemistry; needs to progress again to win this but that is far from impossible. |
1st (19) Fighter | | | | | | 3 | Wayne Hassett | A P O'Brien | Blinkers worked last time when he made all to win an ordinary Curragh maiden over 1m2f last month; could improve plenty stepping up in trip here but will probably need to. |
(11) Comfort Zone | | | | | | 5 | Declan McDonogh | Joseph Patrick O'Brien | Runner-up to Satin in this race off a 2lb lower mark; campaigned over hurdles since, most recently when a close third in a Listed race at Galway over 2m6f; respected here. |
(5) Plontier | | | | | | 8 | Colin Keane | W P Mullins | Ten-time winner in Europe and was a very easy winner of a Sligo maiden hurdle on his stable debut last month; intriguing runner here with the champion jockey booked. |
4th (10) Nurburgring | | | | | | 4 | Dylan Browne McMonagle | Joseph Patrick O'Brien | Winner on the Flat but has developed into a better hurdler, culminating in his impressive success in last month's Galway Hurdle; has a big shout if he can transfer that form to the level. |
2nd (6) Chemistry | | | | | | 3 | Ryan Moore | A P O'Brien | Curragh maiden winner on heavy in April and not seen until he was fortunately awarded the Listed Vinnie Roe Stakes over 1m6f here last month; interesting in his first handicap with the possibility of more to come. |
As wide open as could be expected. Willie Mullins is mob-handed here and perhaps Colin Keane's mount Plontier might be the best of them after impressing on his stable debut in a Sligo maiden hurdle. Of the Ballydoyle contingent, Ryan Moore's mount Chemistry probably has more to offer after he was fortunate to get a Listed race here last month in the stewards' room. Topweight Eagle's Way and dual recent winner Ameerat Jumaira are among plenty with decent chances. Preference is for COMFORT ZONE, second in this last year and comes here on the back of a fine run in a handicap hurdle at Galway. [Justin O'Hanlon]
Race 8: 17:10 Leopardstown Irish Stallion Farms EBF Sovereign Path Handicap (Premier Handicap) IRE 7f
(18) Daamberdiplomat | | | | | | 4 | Rory Mulligan | J P Murtagh | Curragh 2yo winner who started the year on the AW and had a luckless passage at Fairyhouse over this trip in July; slowly away last two starts and will have plenty of traffic to weave through despite being well treated. |
(4) I Am Superman | | | | | | 8 | James Ryan | M D O'Callaghan | Eight-time winner including two Group events during a spell in Australia and landed a four-runner conditions event at Gowran (7f, soft) in May; struggled in Group company thereafter but built on encouraging Galway Ahonoora sixth when beaten a short-head at Gowran last month; effectively 5lb lower here factoring in the rider's claim; first-time cheekpieces added to usual tongue-tie. |
(12) Physique | | | | | | 4 | Seamie Heffernan | Micky Fenton | Took advantage of a low draw when making all to win the Ahonoora at the Galway festival (7f, heavy) last month, with several of today's rivals behind; ran far too freely and didn't handle the track when disappointing at Chester since and will get plenty of competition for the lead. |
(13) Raknah | | | | | | 3 | Tom Marquand | Mrs John Harrington | Wasn't beaten far in valuable handicaps at 1m and 7f in June; hit top form when making all in a 7f Listed race at Galway, beating rivals who were mostly rated higher than her; went up 11lb for that and ran a big race in a valuable York handicap; disappointing in Tipperary Group 3 since but Tom Marquand is an eyecatching booking and cheekpieces are reached for. |
5th (6) Booyea | | | | | | 4 | Robert Whearty | Thomas Gibney | Progressive in the summer, winning a 7f conditions race at Fairyhouse on return before following up in 7f Curragh premier handicap; hampered when sixth in the Galway Mile but disappointing in the Irish Cambridgeshire. |
4th (11) Havana Blue | | | | | | 4 | Ryan Sexton | Julie Camacho | Found his way back to the winner's enclosure at Beverley (7.5f, good to firm) in June, his first success since joining the yard; still off a fair mark judged on peak form, he nearly made every post a winning one when second at Sandown latest, nabbed in the dying strides; won't get his own way out in front here. |
(8) Hurricane Ivor | | | | | | 7 | Shane Foley | Mrs John Harrington | Seven-time winner won over this trip for the first time at the Curragh in May; wasn't as good there back at 6f in July but ran a cracker in first-time cheekpieces when second in the Ahonoora at the Galway festival after having a very wide passage from a tricky draw; surprisingly headgear left off today. |
(10) Blues Emperor | | | | | | 5 | Wesley Joyce | J P Murtagh | Narrowly denied in the Irish Cambridgeshire last year but no show in that race when last seen, eased down by Wesley Joyce once his chance was gone; penultimate Galway Mile fifth off 4lb higher brings him into this at the weights; cheekpieces go back on with first-time tongue-tie. |
2nd (15) Gleneagle Bay | | | | | | 4 | Chris Hayes | Jack W Davison | Beat a smart horse in 1m AW maiden at Dundalk in February; wasn't disgraced in decent conditions event at Listowel in June and only found Booyea too good in 7f conditions event at Fairyhouse when last seen; few miles on the clock and has an 8lb pull in the weights with that rival so could improve; having first start for in-form Jack Davison. |
1st (7) Dance Night Andday | | | | | | 4 | Ronan Whelan | Ross O'Sullivan | C&D winner who got this year off to a flyer with 6f handicap wins at Naas and the Curragh; has run well in defeat since including when second in 7f Listed contest at Cork last month; short of room twice when beaten 5l in 6f Naas Group 3 last time and isn't discounted back in a handicap. |
(5) Rahmi | | | | | | 5 | Danny Sheehy | J P Murtagh | Curragh premier handicap winner over 1m last year; second in Cork premier handicap in May and bounced back to his best when third in Curragh handicap over inadequate 6.3f in July; traded at 1-100 in-running on Betfair when throwing the race away in the Racing League at Chepstow when last seen; can go well. |
3rd (14) Garfield Shadow | | | | | | 3 | Billy Garritty | Richard Fahey | 3yo with an excellent strike-rate; won a pair of 6f handicaps at Chester this year and love affair with the sharp track continued when only narrowly denied there last month, headed by two rivals on the line; only up 1lb but a stiff 7f might stretch his stamina. |
(16) Kortez Bay | | | | | | 3 | Gary Carroll | Ms Sheila Lavery | Took nine attempts to get off the mark in 7f maiden at Fairyhouse (good) in June; out of his depth in the Jersey Stakes later that month and again had a lot on his plate in Listed company at Cork last month; still 5lb above sole handicap start when second over 6f at Naas in May; others better treated. |
(9) Cuban Tiger | | | | | | 3 | Clifford Lee | K R Burke | Dual AW winner earlier in the year, the second a 1m Listed event at Newcastle; some good form since going handicapping on turf, third at Goodwood before only finding Cerulean Bay too good at Thirsk; 2lb swing in the weights with that rival here but he will do well to reverse the form. |
(17) Old Faithful | | | | | | 3 | Ryan Moore | A P O'Brien | Won a Navan premier handicap and a 1m1f handicap around here; came up short in big handicaps at Royal Ascot and the Galway festival but was there with a chance at furlong pole in the Irish Cambridgeshire last time, unable to quicken late on; Ryan Moore takes over but probably wants further. |
(1) Dunum | | | | | | 6 | W J Lee | Miss Natalia Lupini | Progressive handicapper last two years at 7f-1m1f, peaking in Galway premier handicap off mark of 95 last summer; beaten 1l into third in same Galway handicap off 101 last month; disappointed in Listed company at Cork since but enters the reckoning here off 1lb lower. |
(2) Atlantic Coast | | | | | | 3 | Dylan Browne McMonagle | Joseph Patrick O'Brien | Won the Group 3 Killavullan Stakes over C&D (heavy) last October and best run this year came when runner-up in Listed contest at the Curragh (1m, good) in June; folded tamely back up in grade at Goodwood last month; handicap debut from a tough mark. |
(3) Cerulean Bay | | | | | | 3 | Colin Keane | David O'Meara | In terrific form at present, following up Haydock win in July (7f, soft) with a pair of 7f wins at Thirsk, value for more latest when beating the reopposing Cuban Tiger (2lb better off) by a neck; rates as the one to beat. |
British raider Cerulean Bay is respected bidding for a four-timer, while I Am Superman and Rahmi are two others with solid form in good company. However, a more speculative option to consider is RAKNAH, who really impressed when beating supposedly superior rivals from the front in Listed company at Galway and ran a big race in a valuable York handicap from a tough mark. She needs to bounce back from a disappointing run at Tipperary but Tom Marquand is an eyecatching booking. [Adrian Wall]
Race 9: 17:45 Leopardstown HKJC World Pool Autumn Fillies & Mares Handicap IRE 1m
5th (14) Elinor Dashwood | | | | | | 3 | Adam Caffrey | Adrian McGuinness | Won a fillies' handicap off 75 in June; close third to Serialise at Cork would give her a small squeak. |
(18) Nituna | | | | | | 4 | Siobhan Rutledge | Ms Sheila Lavery | Inconsistent this year but got her head in front in a Naas handicap in July; well beaten at Navan two weeks ago; 3lb wrong and others preferred. |
(13) Anvika | | | | | | 3 | Robyn Donaghue-Leahy | Ms Sheila Lavery | Somewhat scuppered by a 12lb penalty for winning a Limerick handicap in June; down to a mark of 82 now after three defeats since but still has it to do. |
4th (10) Sumptuary Law | | | | | | 3 | James Ryan | G M Lyons | Up 14lb for winning handicaps here and at Roscommon in June and July; has been found out off her new mark last twice and tough ask here. |
3rd (11) Serialise | | | | | | 3 | Shane Foley | Mrs John Harrington | Bounced back from a poor run at Leopardstown to narrowly land a 7f handicap at Cork last month; has won over 1m and there is plenty to suggest that she might be capable of better; can contend off a 5lb higher mark. |
(17) Lucky Out | | | | | | 3 | Wayne Hassett | Thomas Mullins | Won a Galway maiden and not beaten far in two handicaps since; back up to 1m here but others more likely; 2lb wrong. |
(5) Karsavina | | | | | | 4 | Hugh Horgan | Joseph Patrick O'Brien | Won a median auction race at Cork in July (1m, good); beaten 5l last time over 9.5f in a fillies' Listed race at Gowran (good to firm); solid enough performer but others make a bit more appeal. |
(3) Independent Expert | | | | | | 5 | Andrew Slattery | Andrew Slattery | Five-time winner but produced a career-best when a very close third in the Irish Cambridgeshire last time; reasonable draw and will go close if she can match that. |
(12) Solar Breeze | | | | | | 5 | Jamie Powell | Daniel McLoughlin | Turf & AW winner for Sheila Lavery; best recent effort when second in a 1m2f handicap at the Curragh; cheekpieces tried; needs to improve. |
(19) Super Exceed | | | | | | 3 | Wesley Joyce | Thomas Mullins | Narrow winner of a Naas maiden (1m) ; not far behind Evening Blossom here last month but needs more from 3lb out of the handicap. |
(1) Star Galaxy | | | | | | 4 | Dylan Browne McMonagle | Joseph Patrick O'Brien | Only beaten three lengths in a Navan Listed in June; good run in a Tipperary conditions race last time but has a tough task here with this weight. |
(4) Lady Lunette | | | | | | 4 | W J Lee | R P Cody | Progressive form this season, beating Snellen in a premier handicap over 1m1f here in July; kept on after not getting a clear run in the Galway Mile; dropped 2lb and comes into calculations. |
(2) Arisaig | | | | | | 3 | Tom Marquand | Charlie Johnston | Four-time winner, including in a handicap at the Goodwood festival; mid-division in a better race at York last time; respected but others preferred. |
2nd (6) Snellen | | | | | | 3 | Gary Carroll | Gavin Cromwell | Struggled after winning the Chesham last year but back to form this year with wins at Limerick and Gowran and when second to Lady Lunette in a premier handicap here in July; disappointing in a Gowran Listed race but respected back in a handicap. |
(8) Zapphire | | | | | | 4 | Tom Kiely-Marshall | Julie Camacho | Gradually improving filly and produced her best effort under this rider when landing a 1m2f handicap at Beverley two weeks ago; could still be more to come from her. |
1st (9) Vera's Secret | | | | | | 5 | Nathan Crosse | John James Feane | Impressive winner of a fillies' handicap at the Curragh in July; up 17lb but ran too keen in the Irish Cambridgeshire last time; hood tried here and could be a factor if it does the trick. |
(16) September Leaves | | | | | | 3 | Keithen Kennedy | Mrs John Harrington | Overcame racing freely in the first-time blinkers to narrowly land a handicap over this trip at Gowran last week; visor goes back on here and might just benefit from the style of this young rider. |
(15) Evening Blossom | | | | | | 3 | Declan McDonogh | Joseph Patrick O'Brien | Deservedly landed a Gowran maiden in July and did well to win a C&D handicap last month; not well drawn but no surprise should she go close here. |
(7) Quadruple | | | | | | 3 | Colin Keane | G M Lyons | Has done little wrong this season with two wins and showed herself to be a progressive filly with a convincing success at the Curragh last month; will be ridden forward from an unfavourable draw and looks potential Listed class. |
Another very competitive contest to end the day. Independent Expert would go close if reproducing her Cambridgeshire third. Lady Lunette and Snellen are closely handicapped and both can get involved. The progressive Serialise can get involved, while the hat-trick seeking Evening Blossom comes into the same category. The one to beat is QUADRUPLE, a fast-improving filly who impressed at the Curragh last time and could well be stakes class. [Justin O'Hanlon]
