Race 1: 16:12 Stratford Power Utilities Group Conditional Jockeys' Selling Handicap Hurdle GB 2m 2f 148y
(6) Esperti | | | | | | 7 | Jay Tidball | David Rees | Pulled up over 3m2f at Newton Abbot last month and it's now over two years since his only hurdle win; needs combination of drop back in trip and first-time blinkers to pay dividends. |
(12) Ill Reef | | | | | | 6 | Murray Dodd | Max Young | Won a French bumper in spring 2023 but has not shown much on his three British hurdling starts this year; 2lb wrong for this handicap debut; improvement required. |
4th (15) Far Away West | | | | | | 5 | Bradley Harris | Daisy Hitchins | Suggested turn might be near when close second over C&D (good to firm) in July, her sixth hurdling start, but has been well beaten here twice since and is 5lb out of the weights today. |
(8) Tessy Lad | | | | | | 5 | Caoilin Quinn | Sam England | Good second over fences in July but failed to complete his next two chases and both subsequent Flat runs were also disappointing; reverts to hurdling with questions to answer. |
(4) Call Me Rocky | | | | | | 7 | Tristan Durrell | Anthony Charlton | Very well handicapped on some of last year's form for Milton Harris and but was out of sorts during three-race spell for Syd Hosie and pulled up on recent debut for latest new trainer; headgear refitted; revival needed. |
(9) Forever A Dove | | | | | | 6 | Tabitha Worsley | Jake Thomas Coulson | Won modest mares' maiden on hurdle debut here (2m, good to soft) in April 2023 but was safely held in both handicaps last summer and has fitness to prove after 13-month break. |
(16) Baby Sham | | | | | | 6 | Oscar Palmer | Seamus Mullins | Won twice over hurdles in spring 2023 (2m4f/3m2f) but has lost her way in this sphere and, although she made the frame on the Flat in July, she makes only limited appeal from 11lb out of the weights here. |
(5) Nadim | | | | | | 5 | Beau Morgan | Anthony Charlton | Triple hurdle winner (once over C&D) for Milton Harris in 2023 but has mixed hurdle/Flat record for three different trainers this year; down the field on recent debut for Anthony Charlton; headgear switched today. |
1st (13) Razzo Italiano | | | | | | 7 | Jack Hogan | Gary Hanmer | Kept on for third over C&D (good to firm) in early July and wasn't beaten far when fifth here (2m, good to firm) 11 days ago but his overall record is not persuasive and he's 3lb wrong today. |
3rd (7) Supposedtobe | | | | | | 6 | Shane Fenelon | Peter & Michael Bowen | Far too inonsistent to rely upon heavily but was close third off 2lb higher in this grade at Cartmel (2m1f, soft) in May and seemed to respond well to first-time cheekpieces when second to bang-in-form rival over fences there (2m1f, heavy) recently; also suited by good ground; can't be ruled out. |
(3) Evenwood Sonofagun | | | | | | 6 | Fern O'Brien | Fergal O'Brien | Kept on for second over C&D (good) in June and has good claims if judged on that performance but was soundly beaten in first-time blinkers three weeks ago and is now 0-17 over hurdles; cheekpieces tried today. |
(11) Brian's Jet | | | | | | 6 | Dylan Johnston | Brian Ellison | Remains a maiden after 17 hurdling starts; pretty consistent since the spring (placed twice) until well beaten at Bangor (5.05) yesterday; 2lb out of the weights. |
(14) Queen Of Steel | | | | | | 4 | Isabelle Ryder | Mark Usher | 0-24 under all codes but fairly consistent this year and was placed here (2m, good) in early June; 3lb out of the weights today but still enters calculations. |
(10) Joker Du Chenet | | | | | | 5 | Ciaran O'Shea | James Owen | 0-14 over hurdles but lost out only by a neck here (2m6f, good; refitted cheekpieces) in July and ran much better than bare form of 26l defeat might suggest at Fontwell (2m5f, good) last week; might be the answer. |
2nd (2) River Robe | | | | | | 5 | Harry Atkins | Dan Skelton | Won readily by 6l on stable debut at Market Rasen (2m, good) in June and her odds-on defeat there the following month is not viewed too harshly but she didn't fire at Fontwell last week and now has a point to prove. |
(1) Ambassador | | | | | | 7 | Joshua Thompson | Micky Hammond | Dual hurdle winner this season, more recently when making all by over 7l at Uttoxeter (2m, good) in July; 7lb higher here but confirmed his wellbeing with a decent Flat run last month and is a big player at this level. |
It's difficult to get excited about any of these but JOKER DU CHENET ran a big race in defeat over a longer trip here two starts ago and also performed well on his latest appearance, even though he was well beaten in this end. He gets the vote ahead of Ambassador, who might be a shade vulnerable off his current mark but arrives in good form and has a good strike-rate over hurdles. River Robe will be dangerous if quickly bouncing back to form, while Supposedtobe also has possibilities. [Chris Wilson]
Race 2: 16:45 Stratford Brian's 90th Birthday Celebration Novices' Hurdle (GBB Race) GB 2m 70y
(5) Kadarra | | | | | | 7 | Charlie Hammond | Max Young | Failed to complete her first two hurdle races and didn't achieve much when sixth of seven in slowly run contest at Worcester last time. |
4th (6) My Bobby's Lass | | | | | | 5 | Charlie Deutsch | Mel Rowley | Not disgraced when midfield in Uttoxeter novice (2m, good; first-time tongue-tie) six weeks ago, her second hurdling start, but needs to take another big step forward here. |
3rd (3) Leave Her To Me | | | | | | 6 | Kielan Woods | David Killahena & Graeme McPherson | Course bumper winner who bettered her inauspicious hurdling debut when clinging on gamely to win mares' maiden at Uttoxeter (2m, good) in July; has more on her plate against males here but is open to further progress and ought to give a good account under her penalty. |
2nd (1) Cavern Club | | | | | | 4 | James Bowen | James Owen | Fairly useful Flat racer who won modest Cartmel maiden (2m1f, soft; main market rival disappointed) in a canter on hurdling debut in July; has 7lb penalty to shoulder today but it's very hard to gauge the limit of his hurdling ability. |
1st (2) Roaring Legend | | | | | | 4 | Sean Bowen | Olly Murphy | Useful Flat racer who delivered on earlier hurdling promise when winning easily at Chepstow (2m, good) in April; stopped quickly and was turned over at short odds at Aintree the following month (reportedly made a respiratory noise) but will be hard to beat if all is well here. |
Roaring Legend was second in a Listed juvenile hurdle before his easy Chepstow win in April and has strong claims here if all goes to plan but his breathing issues remain a nagging concern and his Aintree flop in May was his second defeat at very skinny odds this year. Preference is for CAVERN CLUB, who didn't beat much on his hurdling debut but did it very easily and was of very similar ability to Roaring Legend on the Flat.[Chris Wilson]
Race 3: 17:20 Stratford Power Utilities Group Handicap Chase (0-105) (5) 4yo+ GB 2m 6f 125y
5th (12) Voice Of Hope | | | | | | 7 | Tabitha Worsley | Max Young | Has struggled to get competitive off lowly marks this year and is now 0-17 over fences; tongue-tie/cheekpieces refitted here; 9lb wrong. |
(13) Instant Gambler | | | | | | 8 | Adam Wedge | Alexandra Dunn | Unexposed after only five rules starts but absent since 44l defeat on handicap hurdle debut in February 2023; 13lb wrong for chase debut. |
(11) Emberscombe | | | | | | 7 | David Noonan | Joe Tickle | Creditable second (albeit beaten 23l) to a huge improver on chasing debut at Newton Abbot (3m2f, good) in June but was pulled up over that C&D last month and is 9lb wrong here; others look stronger. |
(7) Camilla's Choice | | | | | | 8 | Jack Hogan | Gary Hanmer | Out of form over hurdles this season and also struggled when back over fences seven weeks ago; needs to stop the rot. |
4th (9) Dreamsundermyfeet | | | | | | 9 | Daire McConville | Martin Keighley | Dual hurdle and dual chase winner in 2021 (all on good ground) but no joy since, and he's been in the doldrums for a good while now; swaps cheekpieces for first-time visor today; 2lb out of the weights. |
(8) Invincible Wish | | | | | | 12 | James Best | Sarah-Jayne Davies | 12yo who battled on well to open chasing account here (2m3f, good) in July; that was a modest race, though, and he was tailed off at Worcester ten days ago; 1lb out of the weights. |
2nd (2) Isholo Du Vivien | | | | | | 6 | Theo Gillard | Donald McCain | 2-5 over fences, having dominated from the front here (2m1f, good) and at Cartmel (2m5f, good) in June; dropped out of contention worryingly quickly here (2m3f) on latest outing but a contender if all is well today. |
(6) Eric Carmen | | | | | | 8 | Robert Dunne | Gary Hanmer | Struggled on chasing debut in Ireland in 2021 and all subsequent rules form is over hurdles; came good for Gary Hanmer at Southwell (2m4f, soft) in May and was placed here (2m6f, good) in July but he's far too inconsistent to rely upon; tongue-tie fitted for first time. |
(10) Ballinoulart | | | | | | 6 | Brian Hughes | David Dennis | Made frame in eight consecutive chases for Alastair Ralph from March 2023 to June 2024 but left that stable after modest run and was also below form on stable debut; 3lb out of the weights; needs to get back on track. |
1st (4) Nickelforce | | | | | | 5 | Harry Bannister | Ben Case | Came good over hurdles at Plumpton (2m4f, soft) in January and has made the frame on all three starts since (2m4f-3m, good); interesting to see how he fares on today's chasing debut. |
6th (3) Calvic | | | | | | 8 | Charlie Hammond | Stuart Edmunds | Dual chase winner this spring, latterly when getting up close home in first-time cheekpieces at Worcester (2m4f, good) in June; both subsequent runs were respectable; can feature here if change of headgear has positive effect. |
(5) The King Of May | | | | | | 10 | Craig Nichol | Brian Ellison | Ended long losing streak off much reduced mark at Cartmel (2m5f, soft) in July; combination of 4lb rise and faster ground ought to be manageable here but it's hard to predict whether he'll be in the right mood again. |
3rd (1) Begin The Luck | | | | | | 8 | Mr Robbie David | Daisy Hitchins | Four-time chase winner; good second here (2m5f, good) in early June and not beaten far in tactical race at Newton Abbot last week; sure to appreciate today's ease in grade; high on the list. |
This can go to class-dropper BEGIN THE LUCK (nap), who chased home a progressive rival on his latest visit to Stratford in June. The King Of May remains very well handicapped on old form but it's hard to predict whether he'll build upon his Cartmel win in July and a bigger threat to the selection could come from front-runner Isholo Du Vivien, who might still have untapped potential over this sort of trip.[Chris Wilson]
Race 4: 17:50 Stratford Power Utilities Group Handicap Hurdle (0-110) (4) 3yo+ GB 2m 70y
9th (8) Fenna's Loss | | | | | | 7 | James Martin | Stephen Allen | Became disappointing for Mark Walford last season and was a tailed-off outsider on first two starts for new stable this summer (2m2f/2m4f); drops back in trip with tongue-tie refitted today. |
6th (5) Rubies Or Gold | | | | | | 5 | Jack Tudor | Christian Williams | Placed in a Irish bumper in the spring; soundly beaten on first two hurdling starts for new stable this summer and probably flattered by proximity to principals in slowly run race at Newton Abbot a week ago but, nevertheless, he's open to improvement in handicaps; market may guide. |
4th (9) Kilcummin | | | | | | 4 | David Noonan | Mark Gillard | Caused 50-1 surprise in juvenile hurdle at Fontwell (2m1f, good) in October and ran best race since when keeping on for modest third at Newton Abbot (2m1f, good to soft) in July; well beaten in basement-grade Flat race since, though, and not the percentage call here. |
8th (1) Douglas Dc | | | | | | 6 | Lilly Pinchin | Tony Carroll | Has rather mixed record over hurdles in Britain but is well handicapped on some of his form in better races than this last season and returns to this discipline after fairly good Flat run five weeks ago; could have a say. |
3rd (3) Pillar Of Steel | | | | | | 9 | Tabitha Worsley | Henry Oliver | Good-ground specialist who gained two of her seven hurdling wins over this C&D; back in good nick when scoring narrowly at Newton Abbot (2m, good) in July and didn't run badly on latest outing; probably still on a workable mark; enters calculations. |
7th (10) Vin Rouge | | | | | | 6 | Oscar Palmer | Seamus Mullins | Fair Flat racer who won off a lowly mark over hurdles at Newton Abbot (2m1f, good) last summer; well beaten when returned to this code there last month but his current mark is workable (even from 1lb out of the weights) and he's impossible to rule out. |
(2) Allbetsoff | | | | | | 8 | Jamie Hamilton | Mark Walford | Five-time hurdle winner who looked as good as ever when making all for hard-fought success at Uttoxeter (2m, soft) in July; also suited by good ground but was pulled up when last in action and may find others better handicapped here. |
5th (4) Pak Army | | | | | | 9 | Mr Robbie David | Daisy Hitchins | Returned to form with emphatic Flat win in May and has been placed on both hurdling starts this summer, latterly when third at Newton Abbot (2m1f, good) a week ago; runs this track well and is likely to be right in the thick of things again; blinkers replace cheekpieces. |
2nd (7) Don Rafael | | | | | | 4 | Sean Bowen | Martin Keighley | Kept on well to win C&D (good) maiden in July, his third start over hurdles, and was placed behind Callin Baton Rouge on handicap debut at Market Rasen (2m2f, good) three weeks ago; could still have a bigger run in him; shortlisted. |
1st (6) Callin Baton Rouge | | | | | | 6 | James Bowen | Charles & Adam Pogson | Claimed by the Pogsons after going close in selling handicap in May and is 2-2 for new stable; looked in particularly good nick when scoring comfortably by 7l at Market Rasen (2m2f, good) three weeks ago and it will be interesting to see how well she copes with recent 10lb hike. |
Callin Baton Rouge has made an excellent start for her new stable this summer and could plausibly still be on the upgrade but the suggestion is PAK ARMY, who is also in good form and who is very well suited by this C&D. Lightly raced 4yo Don Rafael, another C&D winner, is next on the list.[Chris Wilson]
Race 5: 18:20 Stratford Wynchwood Handicap Chase (0-140) (3) 4yo+ GB 2m 213y
(6) Boom Boom | | | | | | 6 | James Best | Rob Summers | Appeared to excel himself when third of five from 25lb out of the weights over C&D (good) in July and is effectively 9lb lower today but the value of that form is open to question, and his overall profile is unconvincing. |
2nd (3) Sir Tivo | | | | | | 10 | Robert Dunne | Gary Hanmer | Has very good 9-28 strike-rate over fences that includes three good-ground C&D wins; seemingly back in good form when close fifth of 13 in valuable race at Uttoxeter (2m, good) in June but disappointed here in July and it's hard to know what to expect from him today. |
3rd (1) El Borracho | | | | | | 9 | Toby Wynne | Oliver Greenall & Josh Guerriero | Multi-purpose 9yo with 15 wins on his CV; not quite at best under any code this year, though, and weakened into fourth of five after making the running here (2m3f, good to firm) 11 days ago. |
4th (2) Sacre Coeur | | | | | | 8 | Tristan Durrell | Dan Skelton | Keen-going front-runner who won three chases last autumn (2m-2m5f) and looked as good as ever when rallying second at Cheltenham (2m, good) in April; slightly below that level since but has slipped to a good mark. |
(5) Forget The Way | | | | | | 7 | Sean Bowen | James Owen | Placed on three of five starts for new stable this season, most recently when third on return to fences at Market Rasen (2m1f, good) seven weeks ago; that form looks pretty solid and he competes off the same mark here; likely contender. |
1st (4) Moveit Like Minnie | | | | | | 7 | Sam Twiston-Davies | Nigel Twiston-Davies | Out of sorts when last seen in the spring but might have been refreshed by a 143-day break and is well handicapped on hurdling form shown towards end of last year; no surprise if he features on chasing debut. |
The one with least to prove is FORGET THE WAY, who posted a sound effort when placed off today's mark at Market Rasen in July and should be fine on this left-handed track. Sacre Coeur, El Borracho and Sir Tivo (all possible front-runners) have not been firing on all cylinders lately and perhaps the most interesting alternative to the selection is well-handicapped chasing debutant Moveit Like Minnie, who comes here fresh.[Chris Wilson]
Race 6: 18:50 Stratford Andy Townsend Memorial Open National Hunt Flat Race (Category 1 Elimination) (GBB Race) GB 2m 70y
3rd (2) Caramelo Rapido | | | | | | 5 | Charlie Hammond | Max Young | Half-brother to very useful Irish chaser Capuccimix; made the frame in two point bumpers in the spring but has more on his plate on today's rules debut. |
5th (5) Kaptain Du Houx | | | | | | 4 | Nick Scholfield | Christian Williams | Third foal from unraced sister to bumper and high-class jumps winner Cilaos Emery; unable to justify prominence in the betting when well-held sixth over C&D (good) on debut in July and needs to have taken considerable benefit from that outing. |
4th (3) Fidendum | | | | | | 5 | Kielan Woods | David Killahena & Graeme McPherson | Not beaten far on either start, latterly when last of five over C&D (good to firm) 11 days ago, but will remain a risky option until he learns to settle much better in the early stages. |
(6) Blackwater Lilly | | | | | | 4 | Craig Nichol | Brian Ellison | Out of a dual bumper winner and built upon her fairly encouraging debut when second of 14 in mares' race at Uttoxeter (good) in July; takes on males here but has a significant role to play. |
2nd (1) All Well And Good | | | | | | 4 | Sean Bowen | Olly Murphy | Flat-bred 4yo who was close second on debut at Worcester in June and finished well to go one better there the following month (also on good); has 7lb penalty here but probably won't be far away. |
1st (4) Serious Chat | | | | | | 5 | Brian Hughes | Donald McCain | Closely related to useful jumpers Arizona Cardinal and Destroytheevidence; displayed significant promise in two Irish bumpers this spring, latterly when clear second to well-bred Willie Mullins newcomer at Kilbeggan (good; third won next time), and commands respect on stable debut. |
There is probably more to come from Worcester winner All Well And Good but the form of the Kilbeggan bumper in which SERIOUS CHAT finished second in June has worked out pretty well in the meantime, and Donald McCain's new recruit looks the one to beat here.[Chris Wilson]
