Race 1: 13:45 Goodwood British EBF Peter Willett Future Stayers' Maiden Stakes (Sire And Dam-Restricted Race) (GBB Race) GB 1m
9th (4) Pistrucci | | | | | | 2 | Edward Greatrex | Warren Greatrex | Showed plenty more second time at Haydock (7f, good to firm) and stepping up to 1m can bring him on some more; others still preferred. |
10th (10) Whatcombe | | | | | | 2 | Hector Crouch | Paul & Oliver Cole | 200,000gns yearling; fourth foal; dam 7f-9.4f winner (including Group 3; RPR 106), out of unraced sister to Cheveley Park winner Embassy and half-sister to 1m2f Group 2 winner Tarfshi; nice pedigree and needs checking in the betting. |
8th (8) Stormy Monday | | | | | | 2 | Saffie Osborne | Ed Walker | Only sixth of eight at Sandown (1m, good) but was quite eyecatching nonetheless from off the pace; can improve. |
1st (1) Glittering Legend | | | | | | 2 | Harry Davies | James Fanshawe | 12-1 when fifth of six at Doncaster (7f, good to firm) and was only 4.5l behind last week's Solario winner Field Of Gold; gelded since and a likely improver. |
6th (7) Sir William | | | | | | 2 | Tom Marquand | William Haggas | Weakened into a remote sixth at Newmarket (7f, good) but did go off at 100-30 and a tongue-tie is now added; can do better no doubt. |
3rd (5) Regal Ulixes | | | | | | 2 | Oisin Murphy | Andrew Balding | 70,000gns yearling; seventh foal; closely related to three winners including Regal Reality (7f-1m2f; Group 3; RPR 121) and Regal Jubilee (1m Listed; 104); stable has won two of the last four runnings of this. |
4th (9) Watching Stars | | | | | | 2 | William Buick | Charlie Appleby | One-paced fourth at Newmarket (7f, good; Sir William behind) but did go off favourite and perhaps the experience was needed. |
2nd (3) Pantile Warrior | | | | | | 2 | Kieran Shoemark | John & Thady Gosden | Well held in two Sandown races won by Godolphin horses before finishing closer upped to 1m at Newbury, pushing a promising newcomer to within a length; just about sets the standard. |
7th (2) Mighty Boy | | | | | | 2 | Sean Levey | Brian Meehan | No match for an easy winner at Deauville (7f, good), but ran well for a newcomer and 2yos from this yard usually improve with experience; interesting. |
5th (6) Seacruiser | | | | | | 2 | Rossa Ryan | Ralph Beckett | 200,000gns yearling; second foal; half-brother to Spanish 7.5f-1m3f winner Velerin; dam 6f-1m2f maiden (RPR 67), half-sister to winners Across The Stars (1m4f Group 2), Bronze Cannon (1m4f Group 2) and Valiant Girl (US 1m1f Grade 3); interesting newcomer. |
Pantile Warrior sets the standard but he has had the most races of these and there are improvers lurking, along with three interesting newcomers. Brian Meehan's 2yos usually come on for a run and MIGHTY BOY made an encouraging debut in France.[Alistair Jones]
Race 2: 14:20 Goodwood William Hill Most Top Price Runners Handicap (0-80) (4) 3yo+ GB 5f
1st (3) Almaty Star | | | | | | 4 | Hollie Doyle | Robert Cowell | Both wins have been over 5f on the AW; 0-11 on turf but wasn't far away at Windsor before struggling in a higher grade at Doncaster. |
(7) Ancient Times | | | | | | 6 | Richard Kingscote | Harry Eustace | Losing run now stands at 17 but there were excuses last time at Newmarket (got warm) and a further 3lb drop can only help; could feature. |
(4) Skallywag Bay | | | | | | 4 | Pat Dobbs | Richard Hannon | Three AW wins and off the mark on grass at the 14th attempt when comprehensively seeing off her three rivals at Brighton on Monday; that perhaps took little winning but she should go well again with a penalty. |
2nd (6) Angle Land | | | | | | 5 | Rossa Ryan | Robert Cowell | Multiple winner but has been rather flat the last twice, on good and slow ground; can break slowly as well. |
(1) Night On Earth | | | | | | 6 | Joe Leavy | Ian Williams | 12th career win when responding well for pressure to get up again at Catterick (5f, good); doesn't look well in with a penalty and Joe Leavy also claimed 5lb last week. |
4th (2) Alligator Alley | | | | | | 7 | Jason Watson | David O'Meara | Can be slowly away but not here last time where he rallied for second on ground softer than ideal; if getting away on terms he'd have a chance. |
3rd (5) Kiss And Run | | | | | | 3 | Oisin Murphy | Rachel Cook & John Bridger | Struggled at the big meeting here but consistent otherwise and she didn't have an easy lead when making all back here 11 days ago (5f, good); 5lb higher but can give another good account. |
Night On Earth isn't obviously well in with a penalty and he'll face competition for the lead as well, which is also a worry for Alligator Alley, Kiss And Run and Almaty Star. Yesterday's Brighton winner Skallywag Bay is a player but a chance is taken on ANCIENT TIMES who had excuses when failing to give his running last time.[Alistair Jones]
Race 3: 14:55 Goodwood Cleansing Services Group Novice Stakes (GBB Race) GB 1m 1f 197y
(4) Castle Peak | | | | | | 4 | Hector Crouch | George Baker | Left Godolphin for £3,000 after one run; had been off for 610 days before finishing in midfield at Kempton (7f) and that was three months ago now; not a certain stayer over this far; now tongue tied. |
(9) Tex | | | | | | 3 | Pat Cosgrave | George Baker | 82,000euros yearling; fourth foal; half-brother to winners Zudu Spirit (French 5f-6f; RPR 101) and Sydney Bay (6f; 65); dam unraced half-sister to Listed winners Monblue (Italian 1m), Salonlove (German 1m 2yo) and Salon Soldier (Australian 1m1f); gelded ahead of debut and likely best watched. |
4th (3) Urban Lion | | | | | | 3 | David Probert | Jack Channon | Ran on well to snatch victory over 1m at Chelmsford (AW); that wasn't a strong race and the penalty spells danger, even if he does improve for going further. |
(7) Shimmering Spin | | | | | | 3 | Hollie Doyle | Jane Chapple-Hyam | Gave it a good go from the front at Chelmsford (1m) but was ultimately reeled in by one who was well held in a Chester nursery at the weekend; others have achieved more. |
(10) Wind River | | | | | | 3 | Rossa Ryan | Ed Dunlop | Returning from a 343-day break when keeping Retracement honest at Pontefract and he could strip fitter for that run; has a 7lb pull with the winner. |
3rd (11) Hillbridge | | | | | | 3 | Oisin Murphy | Andrew Balding | Disappointing in two of her races but the third at Ascot (1m2f, good to soft) reads well and returning from a break might be no bad thing; now hooded. |
(1) Radwan | | | | | | 3 | Kieran Shoemark | John & Thady Gosden | 100,000euros yearling; fitted with cheekpieces on debut and the bare form of that narrow win at Doncaster (1m2f, good to firm) is nothing special; likely to need more if he's to defy a penalty. |
2nd (6) Forest Gate | | | | | | 3 | Charles Bishop | Eve Johnson Houghton | Needed the run on debut but he showed more when second to a promising sort at Newbury (1m2f, good to soft); strong form claims on that evidence and there should be more to come. |
(5) Samra Star | | | | | | 3 | William Buick | Richard Hughes | Beat a now six-race maiden at Wolverhampton (9.4f) but she was nicely on top at the finish and she's built to keep progressing; up against the boys this time but considered. |
1st (8) Sir Lowry's Pass | | | | | | 3 | Saffie Osborne | Ed Walker | 18-1, kept on to be sixth of 13 on his 1m2f Sandown debut (good to soft); that was 80 days ago but he's entitled to progress. |
(2) Retracement | | | | | | 3 | Tom Marquand | William Haggas | Pedigree a mix of speed and stamina; debut third worked out well and he then justified odds-on favouritism at Pontefract (1m, good to firm) in workmanlike style, keeping at bay Wind River; did carry his head rather high there and he has a penalty, but in the right hands to progress; steps up in trip. |
The filly SAMRA STAR was well on top at the finish at Wolverhampton and she's a scopey individual who can improve plenty more. Retracement is no certainty to confirm Pontefract placings with Wind River, but Forest Gate (second choice) brings strong form claims and so too Hillbridge on the strength of her middle effort.[Alistair Jones]
Race 4: 15:30 Goodwood William Hill Keep Your Raceday Positive Fillies' Nursery Handicap (0-85) (4) 2yo GB 6f
(6) Enigmatic Princess | | | | | | 2 | David Probert | Rod Millman | Debut second at Haydock (6f, soft) remains her best effort, and she folded tamely when dropped to 5f for a Pontefract maiden (good to firm) five weeks ago; more questions to answer than some of these. |
(3) Jakarta | | | | | | 2 | Rossa Ryan | Paul & Oliver Cole | Returns to the C&D of her May success (good ground; made all), but flopped at odds-on next time and finished last in Newmarket nursery on latest start; suddenly has a bit to prove in first-time headgear. |
2nd (4) Lady Luzon | | | | | | 2 | Jason Watson | David O'Meara | A model of consistency so far, never out of the frame in six runs; squeezed out a bit more improvement when leading inside the final 1f to score at Chepstow (5f, good to firm) 19 days ago; returning to 6f should be fine. |
1st (7) Leyhaimur | | | | | | 2 | Hollie Doyle | David Simcock | Picked up well from off the pace to edge ahead late on at Kempton in August and ran creditably again at Southwell (also 6f, AW) 11 days later; just as effective on turf; form looks solid; in the mix once more. |
4th (5) Pouting | | | | | | 2 | William Buick | Richard Hughes | First two runs at Windsor (5f/6f, good to firm) promised plenty, but she has since underwhelmed at Newmarket (Listed event) and Newbury (maiden; raced freely); needs to get back on track but a first-time hood may help. |
3rd (2) Havana Gila | | | | | | 2 | Tom Marquand | Harry Eustace | Several places behind Where's Clare when ninth here in July, but then ran pretty well when fifth on nursery debut at Newbury (6f, good) last month, beaten off only inside the final 1f; should be competitive again. |
(1) Where's Clare | | | | | | 2 | Oisin Murphy | Charlie Johnston | Showed improvement when upped to 6f and easily making all by 4l at Nottingham (good) two weeks ago; that wasn't a strong race but a 6lb rise does not look excessive and she's high on the list once more. |
The shortlist includes Havana Gila and Leyhaimur (second choice), both of whom ran creditably in nurseries last time, plus recent Nottingham winner Where's Clare. Slight preference is for northern raider LADY LUZON who is building an impressive body of work.[Richard O'Brien]
Race 5: 16:05 Goodwood William Hill Extra Place Races Handicap (0-85) (4) 3yo+ GB 6f
(9) Atalanta's Boy | | | | | | 9 | Aidan Keeley | Andy Irvine | Seven-time winner but getting on in years and his first run back from an absence was better than the second when down the field at Sandown; had wind surgery in the meantime but unconvincing. |
4th (7) Alcazan | | | | | | 6 | Jack Doughty | Roger Teal | Back to form with wins at Ascot (5f, good to firm) and Brighton (6f, good) before a fast 5f in a Class 2 at York proved beyond her; remains of interest at this level. |
(10) Snuggle | | | | | | 4 | Tom Marquand | Luke Dace | Continued his good form after winning over Windsor's 6f (good to firm) in April but that came to a halt last time at Newbury; still on a competitive mark if shrugging aside that disappointment and he's had a break since. |
(8) Mister Bluebird | | | | | | 6 | Jack Mitchell | Heather Main | His form can be up and down (below best the last twice) but this multiple winner has run three good races this year and there's always a chance that a change of headgear will trigger something. |
(4) Tiger Crusade | | | | | | 7 | Rossa Ryan | David Simcock | Recent efforts more miss than hit but it was a reasonable run when fifth of 12 in a valuable Class 2 at Wolverhampton a month ago; lacks course form but he's too well handicapped to be ignored and a strong pace up front will suit his waiting tactics. |
2nd (2) Rhythm N Hooves | | | | | | 4 | Hollie Doyle | Archie Watson | Prominent-racer; finished between Indian Creek and Many A Star when sixth at Windsor last month and York ten days ago was always going to be tough in a big field; probably has a better chance than his recent form figures may imply. |
(6) Indian Creak | | | | | | 7 | David Probert | Jack Channon | Record of 1-16 here; had Many A Star behind him two runs back but not at Windsor last time when the slow ground should have suited; that was a bit underwhelming. |
(1) Many A Star | | | | | | 7 | Saffie Osborne | Jamie Osborne | Having a fruitful season and he came from further back than the first two when third at Windsor (6f, good to soft) ten days ago; bang there. |
3rd (3) Aramram | | | | | | 3 | Joe Leavy | Richard Hannon | 6f novice winner who hasn't looked that well treated since sent handicapping, for all that the Great St Wilfrid last time was a tough task for one so inexperienced; Joe Leavy's useful 5lb claim will help matters. |
1st (5) Durham Castle | | | | | | 3 | William Buick | Simon & Ed Crisford | Cost 220,000gns as a yearling; unlikely that he had to improve to win a 6f AW maiden two weeks ago but the RPR he recorded bodes well with a view to this initial mark; much respected. |
This should be run at a good clip and with that in mind a chance is taken on TIGER CRUSADE who is well handicapped and likely to have this run to suit. Durham Castle is of interest as an unexposed sprinter seemingly on the upgrade and Alcazan is back in calmer waters than at York.[Alistair Jones]
Race 6: 16:40 Goodwood Royal Sussex Regiment Handicap (0-100) (2) 3yo+ GB 2m
7th (6) Ben Lilly | | | | | | 7 | Rossa Ryan | David Pipe | Seven-time Flat winner who won a couple of hurdles last year; that's more his scene these days and having first Flat run in three years. |
3rd (5) Diamond Bay | | | | | | 6 | Sean Levey | Tom Ward | Won twice over 1m6f last summer, but his second in first-time cheekpieces over 2m on Lingfield AW in March is a standout run in 2024; others safer. |
2nd (1) Calling The Wind | | | | | | 8 | Pat Dobbs | Richard Hughes | Course winner who last season finished second over 2m4f at Royal Ascot before winning the Northumberland Plate at Newcastle (2m, AW); delivered a rare poor run on final appearance at last year's Glorious Goodwood and now returns from the longest break of his career; perhaps best watched. |
8th (4) Aggagio | | | | | | 6 | Rhys Clutterbuck | Gary & Josh Moore | Won this two years ago and was a close third last season off today's mark; beaten when falling over fences when last seen in April but clearly a contender if returning from a break in good order. |
6th (7) The Grand Visir | | | | | | 10 | David Probert | Ian Williams | Without a success since the 2019 Ascot Stakes at the Royal meeting; confirmed his liking for that venue when right behind Beamish at this year's Shergar Cup, but below that level since and he's been unplaced in five previous visits here. |
5th (3) Master Milliner | | | | | | 8 | Charles Bishop | Emma Lavelle | Missed all of 2023; well beaten in his first two races back but then won the 2m4f handicap at the big meeting here last month for a second time in three years; back up 6lb but he likes it here and 2m doesn't trouble him. |
4th (2) Beamish | | | | | | 6 | Hollie Doyle | Archie Watson | Ex-Irish 6yo who saw no action in 2023; well held in valuable handicaps before returning to form with a near miss at the Shergar Cup (2m, good); a repeat of that effort won't see him far away. |
1st (8) East India Dock | | | | | | 3 | Jack Doughty | James Fanshawe | Only 1-9 but he was tackling this trip for the first time here nine days ago and would surely have won without being hampered up the straight; that was also against older opposition and compensation may await off the same mark, especially with a useful 5lb claimer employed this time. |
James Fanshawe's young gun EAST INDIA DOCK (nap) hasn't achieved anything like so much as some of his rivals, but he looks the one to be with. He would surely have won here nine days ago with a clear run and he's essentially 5lb lower with Jack Doughty taking the reins. Master Milliner and Aggagio are always to be reckoned with here and are feared in that order.[Alistair Jones]
Race 7: 17:15 Goodwood William Hill Offers Proper Prices Handicap (0-70) (5) 4yo+ GB 1m 1f 197y
(15) Lawn Ranger | | | | | | 9 | Jason Watson | Michael Attwater | Multiple wins include one over 1m1f here; has not come near winning since the latest of them in August 2023 and although he's 4lb lower now, he has been a regular absentee on good or quicker ground this year. |
4th (5) Twin Earth | | | | | | 4 | Hollie Doyle | Archie Watson | Races freely and it cost him on handicap debut at Sandown (1m2f); another weak finish over 1m1f on this track (both on good) 11 days ago and chance depends on whether he can get the message about conserving his energy. |
(4) Grey Fox | | | | | | 7 | Charles Bishop | Emma Lavelle | Won over this trip earlier in career but subsequent wins at 1m, most recently at Newbury in May, and he tends to find others have greater stamina reserves over 1m2f these days; cheekpieces return; has work to do. |
(6) Carp Kid | | | | | | 9 | Saffie Osborne | John & Rhys Flint | Lost out only narrowly over 1m1f here in September 2022, which was the only time Saffie Osborne has ridden him; successful off 4lb lower at Chepstow (1m2f, good) in July but has needed excuses either side so hard to depend on a good run. |
1st (7) Pink Lily | | | | | | 4 | Joe Leavy | Richard Hannon | Back-to-back wins in May and June (1m2f at Bath and 1m1f on this track; both on good), but has been treading water since and was never competitive over 1m3f on the AW last time out; has something to prove at present. |
3rd (12) Solanna | | | | | | 5 | Sean Levey | John Butler | Three wins in 2023, at 1m3f and 1m2f (turf and AW); perhaps not in quite the same form this year but the race didn't go entirely to plan when runner-up at Yarmouth last time out (first-time cheekpieces retained with refitted tongue-tie) and it's likely he can take another step back to best. |
(2) Kamanika | | | | | | 4 | Rhys Clutterbuck | Joseph Parr | Four 1m2f wins on soft and good in 2023; beaten a long way on belated return over 1m last month but should be all the better for the outing and the return to 1m2f; a stiffer test than this might be ideal, however. |
(10) Abu Royal | | | | | | 4 | Jack Mitchell | Heather Main | Sole win in 1m maiden; mixed record since back on turf this year and although not beaten too far at Nottingham (1m2f, good to soft) in June, he didn't do as well in his only subsequent run over the trip; extra needed for refitted blinkers. |
(16) Jimmy Mark | | | | | | 4 | David Probert | Stuart Kittow | Was on a 1m2f hat-trick of wins (good and good to soft) but he ran no sort of race at Salisbury 20 days ago; won't mind what the weather does but has a query about him after that latest run. |
(9) Bloomwithgrace | | | | | | 4 | Harry Davies | Roger Teal | Maiden; beaten a fair way out over 1m3f at Newbury in June (visored replaced cheekpieces, retained) but she had come closest to a first win the time before, over about 1m3f at Windsor (good to firm); has run well on this track in the past; possible squeak. |
(3) Hoornblower | | | | | | 5 | Oisin Murphy | Denis Coakley | Convincing 1m winner on Lingfield AW when back from a lengthy winter break, but he found little over that C&D in July and has it to prove upped to a new trip back on turf from a wide draw; Oisin Murphy rides him for the first time since spring 2023. |
(8) Coolree | | | | | | 5 | Tom Marquand | Amy Murphy | Both wins at about 1m and had a trip query back at 1m2f for only the second time, at Yarmouth (good to firm) recently, but he picked up well to finish a close if never-nearer third of nine; needs to show he can do it a second time but comes here in better form than many. |
(13) Celebrating Ethel | | | | | | 5 | Jack Doughty | Tony Carroll | Two best runs this year have come at 1m1f here (good; not clear run) and 1m2f at Doncaster (good to firm), but she faded on her latest start and was taken out of a race on Sunday because of good to firm ground. |
2nd (11) Meleri | | | | | | 5 | Pat Cosgrave | Jim Boyle | Two wins at 1m2f, on good and heavy; had a slow start to 2024 and although she ran much better when a close second at Sandown (1m2f, good) in July, her chance would improve with some rain. |
(1) Tiger Beetle | | | | | | 6 | William Buick | Mark Rimell | AW regular now but he made the most of a rare 1m2f run on good ground when winning at Haydock in July; took a long time to wind up a challenge at Nottingham since, though, and this less galloping track might not be ideal; William Buick up for the first time. |
(14) Imperial Cult | | | | | | 5 | Rossa Ryan | Rachel Cook & John Bridger | In the pink at present, with two 1m4f wins on the AW and he nearly pulled off the hat-trick when just touched off by a well-treated rival back on turf at Epsom (1m2f, good) 18 days ago; up a further 2lb but looks sure to be involved; Rossa Ryan up for the first time. |
A few of these are showing signs of flagging after good spells earlier but that's not the case with IMPERIAL CULT, who only narrowly failed to land the hat-trick at Epsom where he lost nothing in defeat. Those likely to play a part include Solanna and Meleri in that order, although Tiger Beetle could also figure if he can get going a bit earlier than he did at Nottingham. Kamanika might need another run but she is also worth considering now back over a more suitable trip.[Emily Weber]
