(2) By The Glass
2Sean D BowenDavid LoughnaneNever going the pace at Leicester (7f, good to soft) and was beaten about 18l; needs to leave that run a long way behind.
(3) Matharu
2Finley MarshRichard Hughes40,000euros breeze-up 2yo; beaten in the region of 12l in 7f events at Kempton and Ascot; perhaps one for nurseries after this.
3rd (1) Amor Cordis
2Joanna MasonDr Richard Newland & Jamie Insole£85,000 Havana Gold half-brother to four winners; however, allowed to go off at 66-1 at Windsor (6f, good to firm) and finished tenth of the 11 runners.
4th (5) Sundown Kid
2Jason HartJohn & Sean QuinnGlimmers of promise in both his runs at about 7f but Topspeed/RPR figures leave him with lots to find.
2nd (6) Wiltshire Lad
2Jason WatsonSir Michael Stoute190,000gns yearling; could never land a blow after being slowly away at Doncaster (7f, good to firm; 9-1) but there were positives to take out of that and the third (4l ahead) impressed in winning at the Newmarket July festival; significant improvement looks on the cards.
1st (4) Seagolazo
2Kevin StottHugo PalmerMade a nice debut and stepped up on that to finish much closer at Haydock (7f, good), finishing his race out well after being hampered by a loose horse; sets the standard.

The others need to step up plenty to trouble WILTSHIRE LAD and Seagolazo, with the latter's Haydock form when a closing third setting a fair standard. However, Wiltshire Lad looked badly in need of his debut experience at Doncaster and the third horse in that race was seriously impressive in getting off the mark next time.[Alistair Jones]

(5) Lhebayeb
6Finley MarshRichard PriceThree-time winner last year over slightly shorter trips for Victor Dartnall, for whom her final race was a placed effort over hurdles; however, finished last on stable debut only two weeks ago over 1m4f at Chepstow.
(4) Ready To Shine
5Tom Kiely-MarshallJulie CamachoWon off a 6lb higher mark over this far at Thirsk last summer (good to firm); muddling pace was no help when fourth of the five runners on return to Flat action at Haydock (1m3f, good; after a wind op) but she didn't run badly; hard to dismiss.
3rd (7) Hot Team
8Jack DoughtyPatrick MorrisThis year's wins have been at 1m3f and 1m1f but he stays this far; didn't get the breaks when second to Grey Fable here two weeks ago but last week's Haydock effort could have been better; may bounce back returned here.
(1) Green Team
5Franny NortonIan WilliamsHas got himself well handicapped and he raced enthusiastically in the new visor when third over C&D two weeks ago; has a bit to find with Grey Fable and Hot Team, while there's no guarantee the headgear will inspire a second time.
4th (8) Infinite Honour
3Ray DawsonSusan CorbettFirst run over 1m4f and on a sharp left-handed track when comfortably coming clear at Catterick (good to soft) latest, which followed two seconds; strong in the market last time and an 8lb rise is hard to moan about.
2nd (2) Lincoln Rockstar
4Marco GhianiIvan FurtadoMade it 3-5 for this yard in a tongue-tie when responding well for pressure to be well on top late on at Leicester last week (1m4f, good to soft); she's 8lb higher for this and has been plying her trade in Class 6s, but the momentum is with her.
(6) Naturalia
3Shay FarmerDonald WhillansStarted out as a sprinter; off the mark over 1m1f at Carlisle (soft) in May and has probably performed even better in defeat since, latterly when upped to 1m3f; wouldn't be a certain stayer over this far but they might not go much of a pace.
1st (3) Grey Fable
4Sean D BowenKarl Thornton0-20 for former yard but second and first in two C&D handicaps for current one, two weeks ago readily repelling Hot Team and Green Team; led 1f out before collecting by 2l; 4lb rise is fair and Sean D Bowen rides again.

This looks tricky as most of them have claims and there might not be a great deal of pace on. GREY FABLE's fortunes have improved no end since joining Karl Thornton and he is clearly suited by this track. Infinite Honour's assured stamina entitles him to second preference over Naturalia.[Alistair Jones]

(7) Oso Rapido
7Ray DawsonRoger Fell & Sean MurrayHas won at 7f but most wins have come over 6f and he hasn't really achieved all that much over either distance since last October's Catterick win.
(10) Wyvern
5Harry BurnsPatrick MorrisThree-time winner stuck on a losing run and he finished last over C&D on stable debut; risky enough.
2nd (13) Rainwater
3Connor MurtaghRichard FaheyHandicap runs mirror his novice efforts in that he's performed okay with seriously threatening; only seventh at Leicester last time (7f, good; first-time cheekpieces) in the race won by Vince Le Prince.
(12) Once Adaay
4Sean D BowenMrs Ilka Gansera-LevequeHas won on only AW but did make the frame here not long ago, albeit in a lower grade; likely to need better this time and he's run moderately since.
(8) Tobetso
4Zak WheatleyDeclan Carroll7f/1m winner; back to form off last winning mark when third at Thirsk but then ran poorly at Ripon where he has won; unraced here and he's drawn wide, so others appeal more.
(3) Island Native
4Jason WatsonMichael ApplebyRunning well on turf until failing to overcome a wide draw at Chelmsford last time and this front-runner has again been unlucky in that respect; will do well to dominate as he likes from box 12.
(5) Dembe
6Dale SwiftSimon PearceSplit two subsequent winners at Kempton three runs back (1m AW) and not disgraced subsequently back there or at Ascot; losing run is mounting up but he has each-way claims.
(11) Saviour
3Kevin StottHugo PalmerOnly sixth in his two handicaps (in this headgear latterly) and failed to back up his 2yo novice form; much depends on what effect a gelding operation might have had and he needs checking in the betting.
3rd (4) Saturnalia
4Finley MarshRichard HughesBoth wins have been on the AW and he's yet to prove himself quite so effective on turf, for all that he wasn't far away over 7f at Salisbury latest; perhaps not the percentage call.
1st (1) Light Speed
4Joanna MasonGemma TuttyWith Andrew Balding when winning three of his first four starts, including a 1m2f handicap on the AW off 4lb higher; neither run since moving yards was overly positive and he now has a lot to prove.
(6) Lahab
4Jason HartMichael WighamHas shown he can be competitive off this sort of mark but has left Grant Tuer for 15,000gns after a couple of sevenths; sold on 10th July and it remains to be seen how he's settled in for his new yard, so he's perhaps best watched.
(9) Vince Le Prince
4Sean KirraneTim EasterbyIt was a Class 5 that he won at Leicester (7f, good) and he came up short in a Class 4 off this 2lb higher mark at Thirsk; perhaps vulnerable from his wide berth.
4th (2) Evocative Spark
5Franny NortonDarryll HollandIn-form 5yo who enhanced his solid record at this track when coming from off the pace over C&D 15 days ago, faring best of the rest behind one who dominated up front; drawn wider this time but has a good chance if getting the breaks.

The likelihood of a solid gallop up front heightens interest in EVOCATIVE SPARK who likes to come late and has a good record here. The now-gelded Saviour would be interesting if tapping back into his juvenile promise and he's second choice ahead of the in-form Vince Le Prince.[Alistair Jones]

Info Form Odds Horse Rating Rating Weight OR Days since last run Age Jockey Trainer Comments
(10) Knicks
3Joanna MasonMichael & David EasterbyMade all in a 5f handicap here at the May meeting but it was asking a bit much to repeat those tactics over this far on rain-softened ground two weeks ago; drawn wider this time and with the visor tried the last twice now left off; will do well to win.
(7) Beyond Borders
3Pierre-Louis JaminK R BurkeProgressive 2yo, winning four times over 6f; 4lb lower than when close up behind Garfield Shadow here in May but hasn't really kicked on from there and stall 10 might scupper him.
(8) Media Shooter
3Sean D BowenK R BurkeLooks a better horse on AW than turf, for all that he was fourth of 17 in an always-strong York sprint two starts back; Kempton last time was his least effective performance this year.
3rd (1) Action Point
3Joshua BryanArchie WatsonListed winner at two and twice placed at that level subsequently; latest fifth in Germany was a good effort on RPRs and he's been gelded since; on a tough mark for belated handicap debut but he's earned it.
(5) Irish Nectar
3Franny NortonKevin RyanEnded 2yo campaign on a high with narrow 5f soft-ground wins at Nottingham (maiden) and York (handicap; 5lb lower); never involved on his return and again back at York in May, though he found a lot of bother that day.
(9) Balon d'Or
3Jack DoughtyHugo Palmer0-14 since his winning debut but off a reduced mark he beat all bar an unexposed Beckett horse over C&D two weeks ago; that was a Class 4 and this a Class 2, but with Jack Doughty taking away 5lb he can't be ruled out.
2nd (2) Matters Most
3Hector CrouchRalph BeckettTwo wins as a juvenile; slow start did for him at Royal Ascot but competitive in his two runs either side of that (at 6f), pushing a subsequent improver close at Windsor and only wilting late on when the ground was soft at Pontefract; good chance, other than stall 9 not being ideal.
(3) Warm Spell
3Ray DawsonRoger VarianBeat last month's Britannia runner-up in a 7f novice at Newbury last summer and that suggests he's well handicapped; restless in stalls and slowly away on his handicap debut at Newmarket in May (6f); has been gelded and remains of strong interest.
1st (4) Garfield Shadow
3Connor MurtaghRichard FaheyThe form of his C&D win at the May meeting now reads really well given he was getting just 1lb off Al Shabab Storm who has since gone 211 and is BHA-rated 107 now; didn't appear to cope with the Dip too well at Newmarket next time and his York run was just too bad to be true; major player providing he breaks well from stall 1.
4th (6) Eye Of Dubai
3Jason HartJohn & Sean QuinnThe season began well and, following a second wind operation, he got firmly back on track when staying on late in the day from an unpromising position over C&D recently (Balon D'or runner-up); drawn wide on that occasion but not this time and he has raced prominently before; interesting.

This is a hot 3yo handicap but GARFIELD SHADOW (nap) is well handicapped if taking his C&D success in May at face value and there's a strong suspicion that he's not done himself justice on either of his starts since. Eye Of Dubai had to be dropped in from a bad draw here last time and shaped very promisingly all things considered. He's drawn in stall 2, next door to the selection. Warm Spell could be the improver on the back of a gelding operation and he too is temptingly treated on his peak form.[Alistair Jones]

(7) Rogue Thunder
4Harry BurnsPatrick MorrisWon on the AW over 7f for Tom Clover; hasn't beaten a rival in two runs for this yard, over 7f and the extended 5f here; wellbeing is an issue and so too his effectiveness at this distance.
(8) Doctor Vuby
3Joanna MasonMichael & David EasterbyBest efforts have come on the AW and he hasn't offered a lot in two turf runs after wind surgery (hampered early at Epsom on former occasion); from a bad draw he's down the pecking order here.
(12) Red Walls
6Franny NortonLisa Williamson9-66 on the AW, whereas he is 0-23 on grass after finishing fourth over 7f here two weeks ago; this is a better trip for him and he's quick enough to exploit his lower draw.
(9) High Velocity
5Sean D BowenDavid LoughnaneHas come a long way down in the weights since last scoring at Southwell in August 2022; 0-5 for current yard and recent best efforts have also been on the AW; poor at Doncaster last time in cheekpieces and now tries blinkers; too much to prove.
(6) Bang On The Bell
5Harrison ShawJ R JenkinsMultiple winner, though seven of his nine wins have been on the AW and that's his scene; lower turf mark brings some optimism but stall 10 asks a big question of him.
(4) Maharajas Express
4Zak WheatleyPatrick MorrisConsistent sprinter for Jack Jones and last couple of runs for that yard were respectable; recently changed hands for 16,000gns and has a part to play if holding his form.
(10) Object
5Jack GarrittyTim EasterbyBest efforts this season have come on ground with give underfoot, winning at Catterick in April and fourth back there last time; needs ideal conditions to defy current mark.
(11) Lotus Rose
5Jason WatsonRoger Fell & Sean MurrayExpensive to follow this season but well handicapped and made the frame on her previous visit here; unlikely to be far away.
(2) Habooba
4Ray DawsonT J KentStill early days on turf (this is only her third attempt) but she burned her rivals off mid-race at Kempton (6f) last time before holding on at the death; drop to 5f is no concern but stall 12 is.
1st (3) Count d'Orsay
8Sean KirraneTim EasterbyA few good runs to his name this year, including here three starts back, but he was soon struggling when a big outsider in big field at York (good to firm) on Friday; ground softer than good would be preferred for him.
3rd (5) Ecclesiastical
7Jason HartTristan DavidsonWon here last season during which his mark went through the roof after winning four times; dropping back to a better mark and his latest run here was encouraging after getting pestered up front.
2nd (1) Secret Mistral
4Jack DoughtyTony CarrollLikes to force it and ran out a 2l winner at Haydock on reappearance (5f, good); another good run back there last week when faring best of the trailblazers; not particularly well drawn for her running style but by no means dismissed.

Most of these have questions to answer on one count or another. There should be lots of pace on and LOTUS ROSE can get a nice lead from stall 5 and finally exploit her good mark. Secret Mistral isn't drawn as wide as others who like to be up there and she can hang about, as can Red Walls.[Alistair Jones]

(8) Grace Angel
4Jason WatsonDarryll HollandBest effort this term when close second at Windsor (5f) in May; has become inconsistent but a physical tweak (had wind surgery since last run) may help; nicely weighted off 7lb below last winning mark.
(9) G'Day Mate
3Alistair RawlinsonMichael Appleby5f winner in Ireland; 0-7 for new stable and form has dipped since running well on AW in February/March; chance largely depends on how well he responds to first-time hood and drop in grade.
(5) Almaty Star
4Marco GhianiRobert CowellTies in closely with The Thames Boatman on Chelmsford AW running three weeks ago but has to overcome a difficult draw in this field; latest effort took his turf record to 0-9; not the percentage call.
(2) Arecibo
9Franny NortonDeclan CarrollSome respectable form this season for new yard and now drops in class off an attractive mark; the negatives are his long losing spell and unfavourable draw but the booking of Chester expert Franny Norton is a positive.
(12) King Of Tonga
8Zak WheatleyDeclan CarrollOvercame a wide trip from stall 9 in C&D contest two weeks ago, taking Chester record to 3-11; remains to be seen whether he can repeat the feat from same draw but it's hard to rule him out; still favourably treated on peak form.
2nd (7) Accrual
3Hector CrouchDaniel & Claire KublerImproving 3yo who has raced only four times and could well have more to offer; good second in Yarmouth handicap most recently when bidding for a 5f hat-trick; Wolverhampton win suggests he'll be suited by Chester; one for the shortlist.
(1) Hyperfocus
10Sean KirraneTim EasterbyIn-form veteran who bids for a Chester hat-trick, having won 6f/5.5f events here the last twice; best on ground softer than good and certainly needs such conditions back at 5f; chance depends on what the weather does.
1st (11) Paws For Thought
6Charlie MaggsDonald McCainHas gained all wins over 6f/7f, including three times at Chester; short of pace over C&D three starts ago; has the plum draw but looks far from solid on 2024 form and the return to 5f presents a question mark.
3rd (10) Nazron
3Ray DawsonRoger VarianSolid performer whose form figures read 3232122, runner-up in small field at Lingfield (5f) most recently; still on the same mark but has to overcome the worst of the draw in a deeper race; will do well to go one better.
(6) Due For Luck
3Jason HartJohn & Sean QuinnRegressed elsewhere the last twice but this return to Chester may well have a positive effect; has gone close off this mark in both starts over C&D; favourably drawn and looks interesting back here.
(3) The Thames Boatman
4Finley MarshRichard HughesHeld on narrowly at Chelmsford (5f) three weeks ago, recording his fifth AW win; no certainty to follow up, being 0-8 on turf and back on career-high mark, but an advantageous draw gives him a fighting chance.
(4) Dickieburd
4Kevin StottCraig LidsterThreatening to regain the winning thread, having finished second twice here (5f/5.5f) of late; hindered by a rather tardy start when beaten favourite in C&D event last time and is treated as if still in form; well drawn and warrants respect.

Granted a cleaner break, DICKIEBURD could well prove the answer. He's favourably drawn and has some good recent course form. Due For Luck, who looks interesting back at Chester, is second choice ahead of progressive Accrual.[Steve Boow]

6th (6) Mysteryofthesands
3Joanna MasonTim EasterbyOff the mark when narrowly denying the well-backed favourite at Hamilton (extended 1m; good) but that was a Class 5 and he was only sixth in a Class 4 back there; this Class 3 company should demand even more and he's off an untouched mark.
4th (7) Double Jump
3Jack DoughtyClive CoxNursery winner over 7f on soft; second and third in his two handicaps since sent beyond a mile and the winners of both those races were in form; has the benefit of Jack Doughty's claim and cheekpieces are added; player.
3rd (3) Sniper's Eye
4Alistair RawlinsonDavid SimcockWon a Southwell novice (1m) last September and that was it for the season; hasn't threatened in either handicap this year, though wasn't beaten far at Newmarket last time (1m2f) when held up in a slowly run affair; has a handicap in him.
(2) Dream Harder
5Franny NortonIan WilliamsGave it a good go in the new cheekpieces when second to Grey Cuban here two weeks ago but he was out of the money at Yarmouth on Thursday (1m3f; never threatened); no headgear this time.
5th (1) Theoryofeverything
4Jason WatsonDavid O'Meara0-8 since a winning debut for the Gosdens; hasn't built on a good debut for this yard when fourth in a blanket finish at Newmarket in April (1m, good) but wind surgery could do something for him and he does stay this far.
2nd (5) More Thunder
3Kevin StottSir Michael StouteNottingham novice winner (1m2f, good) who only went down by a length to a Gosden newcomer when penalised at Newmarket (good); probably needs more again to defy this mark but that's quite feasible.
1st (4) Grey Cuban
3Jason HartHugo PalmerAW winner; predictably struggled at Royal Ascot two runs back but the hood went on over C&D two weeks ago (good to soft) and he came home best to deny Dream Harder; if the headgear works again then the 3lb rise shouldn't be the end of the world.

Clive Cox's DOUBLE JUMP has run well in both his handicaps at this trip (keeping on), coming up shy behind one who was progressive and the other in form. Jack Doughty's 5lb claim is welcomed. More Thunder should be able to pay his way in handicaps and he's second choice, though recent C&D winner Grey Cuban rates an obvious player and Sniper's Eye appeals as a handicap winner waiting to happen.[Alistair Jones]
