Race 1: 14:00 Lingfield Download The Raceday Ready App Apprentice Handicap (0-60) (6) 4yo+ GB 1m 7f 169y
13th (13) Dirty Barry | | | | | | 5 | Connor Planas | Phil McEntee | Well beaten in all five starts, including when returning in June from a lengthy layoff; blinkers go on. |
8th (6) Valegro | | | | | | 5 | Mia Nicholls | Pat Murphy | Placed in a 1m4f claimer (good to soft) in France; well beaten on both starts for Ali Stronge, with 14 months between them; can only be watched on first start for new trainer. |
11th (9) Infantryman | | | | | | 4 | Ben Sanderson | Pat Murphy | Little worthwhile form at big odds in three novice events and a handicap. |
10th (12) Poppydora | | | | | | 4 | Morgan Cole | William Knight | Moderate form at double and triple-figure odds; best watched. |
9th (10) Roman Tempest | | | | | | 5 | Jack Dace | Simon Dow | 1m2f soft-ground winner last October; well beaten in four starts on turf/AW from 1m2f-1m4f this season; has stamina to prove going up in trip. |
5th (7) Blenheim Lad | | | | | | 4 | Taylor Fisher | Camilla Poulton | 0-12; second over 16.5f from this mark at Wolverhampton in April; plenty to prove, however, after his last two starts. |
2nd (5) Gift Of Raaj | | | | | | 9 | Tom Kiely-Marshall | Roger Fell & Sean Murray | 16.5f winner on both turf and Tapeta; 3lb lower than when winning at Newcastle last November but has been some way short of that level since. |
6th (8) Nostromo | | | | | | 4 | Sam Feilden | Roger Teal | Has shown glimpses of promise and is beginning to slip to a workable mark; step up from 1m5f is worth a try. |
3rd (11) Sir Joseph Swan | | | | | | 6 | Laura Coughlan | Archie Watson | 1m6f winner on both turf and Polytrack; has been well below the level of last season's most recent win in seven subsequent starts; workable mark but a revival is needed. |
4th (2) Anisoptera | | | | | | 7 | Tommie Jakes | Brett Johnson | Four-time 2m AW winner, including here; has been inconsistent this season but she's on a handy mark and it would be no surprise to see her go close, at the least. |
12th (1) Queensland Boy | | | | | | 4 | Harry Burns | Ian Williams | Dual turf winner at up to 2m on slow ground; placed here over 1m4f; below par since scoring at Nottingham in April; ought to be competitive in this grade but arrives with a bit to prove. |
1st (3) Doublethetrouble | | | | | | 6 | Kaiya Fraser | John Butler | 31-race maiden across both codes; placed over C&D; weakened quickly at Kempton (2m, Polytrack) in July when last seen but has been placed several times over this trip this year; probably competitive. |
7th (4) Devizes | | | | | | 8 | Aidan Keeley | Pat Phelan | Multiple AW winner, including here over 1m4f and elsewhere over 2m; under 2l second off this mark at Kempton latest (2m, Polytrack); each-way player. |
There are plenty of holes to pick here, including a few with the selection ANISOPTERA, who is at least competitively treated and has plenty of form on this surface and over this trip. She is taken to come good again. Queensland Boy is a possible danger at this level, with Doublethetrouble and Devizes others who should be involved.[Jonathan Doidge]
Race 2: 14:30 Lingfield Download The Racecourse App Raceday Ready Handicap (0-55) (6) 3yo GB 5f 6y
1st (6) Turn And Burn | | | | | | 3 | Sam Hitchcott | Kevin Frost | Big prices and has not shown much in three races, all 5f with two in Ireland and another at Ripon on debut for this yard in August; better can't be ruled out now he's handicapping; yard also runs Piperstown. |
4th (3) Zelma | | | | | | 3 | Ben Sanderson | S Woods | Minor form since handicapping and 7f is the shortest trip she's attempted; has much to prove with the first-time cheekpieces worn last time replaced with a new tongue-tie and blinkers. |
5th (5) Kohana Girl | | | | | | 3 | Ray Dawson | J R Jenkins | Well held in her two AW starts (in a novice and a C&D handicap when back from breaks) but she went close in a 5f turf handicap here in May and can have a case made if back to that level following a short break. |
6th (2) Falmouth Boy | | | | | | 3 | Neil Callan | Tony Carroll | Thereabouts in 7f and 6f handicaps on this track but has bled from the nose on last two starts, in May and August, so has to be treated with great caution on first 5f run. |
3rd (1) Piperstown | | | | | | 3 | William Cox | Kevin Frost | Bred to go a bit on pedigree and his recent handicap debut over 6f at Southwell was promising, albeit still with signs of greenness; has the speed to cope with the return to 5f and can do better. |
2nd (4) Marcus | | | | | | 3 | David Egan | Charlie Wallis | Has reached the frame in three of his six 5f handicaps and he lost nothing in defeat (chasing home one on the second leg of a three-timer) in a 5f classified at Chelmsford last Thursday; likely to be on the premises. |
Marcus ran up against one who is in tremendous form when returned to the AW at Chelmsford last week but this can go to PIPERSTOWN, who showed bright speed on his 6f handicap debut at Southwell and should have the pace to cope with the return to the minimum trip. Kohana Girl can also be bang there.[Emily Weber]
Race 3: 15:00 Lingfield Tips For Every Race At raceday-ready.com Restricted Maiden Stakes (Bands C And D) (GBB Race) GB 1m 1y
(2) Outlander Spirit | | | | | | 4 | Charles Bishop | Karen Jewell | 200-1 and never a factor when running green on debut at Kempton (7f, Polytrack) in May; should come on for that but much more is needed. |
2nd (3) Mr Grimes | | | | | | 3 | Luke Morris | J S Moore | 12,000gns foal, 30,000euros yearling; fourth foal; half-brother to 7f/1m winner Indiana Grey (including AW; RPR 68); dam placed at 1m-1m2f (68), sister to useful 7f/1m winner Bishan Bedi; trainer 9% with AW 3yos (five seasons); needs a market check on debut. |
(6) Adore You | | | | | | 3 | Pat Cosgrave | George Boughey | No bigger than 6-1 in two starts, improving from her juvenile effort when returning to action at Chelmsford (1m, Polytrack) recently; no surprise if she is able to take another step forward here; not ruled out. |
(5) Jacks My Boy | | | | | | 3 | David Egan | S Woods | 16,000euros yearling; fifth foal; half-brother to 7f/1m winner Excuzio Joe (RPR 89); dam unraced sister to 1m winner Saikung and 6f/6.5f winner Gloss, closely related to Listed-placed 1m3f/1m4f winner Luire; trainer 15% with AW 3yos (five seasons); gelded newcomer; check for market confidence. |
(1) Mauchline | | | | | | 4 | Neil Callan | James Tate | Sixth foal; half-brother to three Flat winners, including Wekeyll (1m; RPR 84) and Couples (Swedish 6f-1m including dirt Listed), and a hurdle winner; dam maiden (64) half-sister to Breeders' Cup Marathon winner Muhannak; trainer among the winners and 24% with AW 4yos (five seasons); market check. |
(4) Wadacre Giorgio | | | | | | 3 | Franny Norton | Charlie Johnston | Sixth foal; brother to 1m6f AW/2m turf winner Wadacre Galoubet (RPR 72), half-brother to winners Wadacre Grace (7f/1m AW; 78) and Wadacre Gogo (1m2f/1m4f AW; 66); dam 1m4f AW winner (69); trainer 14% with AW 3yos and can have debut winners; interesting newcomer. |
1st (7) Zariela | | | | | | 3 | Ben Sanderson | S Woods | One of two in this for her trainer and by far the most experienced runner in the field; placed in 6-12 starts, the last two in handicaps; should be thereabouts again, switching back to this sphere. |
In terms of achievements, Zariella sets the standard and she probably deserves to pick up one of these in the near future. However, she is clearly vulnerable to a potential improver, such as Adore You, or more likely to a newcomer such as Mauchline or WADACRE GIORGIO. The market should prove informative but the latter is suggested, with this trip looking a good starting point.[Jonathan Doidge]
Race 4: 15:30 Lingfield Get Raceday Ready Restricted Maiden Stakes (Bands B, C And D) (GBB Race) GB 6f 1y
(1) Launceston | | | | | | 2 | Luke Morris | Sir Mark Prescott Bt | 25-1 when slowly away and always done for toe behind Gilet on 6f Chelmsford debut (AW) three weeks ago; has stamina on both sides of his pedigree and is likely one for handicaps in due course. |
(7) Dios De La Guerra | | | | | | 2 | Paddy Bradley | Simon Dow | Half-brother to the yard's Rey De La Batalla, who ran well at a big price on his 2yo C&D debut last summer (won two Polytrack handicaps early this year); likely he too will improve with experience. |
3rd (9) Spiritualism | | | | | | 2 | Neil Callan | Amy Murphy | Some way below spring levels back from three months off recently (first-time tongue-tie and cheekpieces; switches to blinkers here); needs to improve somewhat on that. |
(5) On The Never | | | | | | 2 | William Cox | Charles Hills | £27,000 yearling whose half-brother Smart Start went within a short head of making a winning 2yo debut here; yard's strike-rate with juveniles has dropped this season. |
(3) Chester Arms | | | | | | 2 | Ray Dawson | James Ferguson | Dam, whose first two foals weren't up to much, won on her debut (Tapeta, 3yo); trainer hasn't had the best of seasons with 2yos to this point and the market will guide. |
(6) This Farh | | | | | | 2 | David Egan | David Loughnane | Brighton second came in a weak maiden and he went backwards from it at Thirsk three weeks ago; it may be in nurseries that he makes his mark. |
2nd (2) The Hare Rail | | | | | | 2 | William Carson | Roger Teal | 50,000gns yearling who's a half-brother to four winners, all over further; outran market expectations on his turf debut at Salisbury (stiff 6f) in July and helps set the standard on that, but whether today's sharper track will work in his favour is the question. |
4th (8) Dark Rosa | | | | | | 2 | Pat Cosgrave | George Boughey | 50,000euros yearling who's a half-sister to an 8.2f heavy-ground 2yo winner in Ireland; finished well held on her turf debut at Pontefract (stiff 6f) and is far from certain to be suited by this sharper course. |
1st (4) Gilet | | | | | | 2 | Charles Bishop | Warren Greatrex | Jumps-oriented trainer has saddled two 2yo winners this season and has every chance of a third, this half-brother to a dual nursery winner holding obvious claims on either of this summer's AW seconds; first-time headgear. |
The Hare Rail shaped nicely on his Salisbury debut in July but, a half-brother to 2m winner Arrange among others, he is not certain to be suited by today's sharper, turning 6f. Similar comments apply to Dark Rosa and this looks good for GILET, whose Southwell second has been well advertised since and who improved on it himself when filling the same position at Chelmsford three weeks ago.[Graham Wheldon]
Race 5: 16:00 Lingfield Free Digital Racecard At raceday-ready.com 'Confined' Handicap (For Horses Not Won 2024 Flat Turf) (0-58) (6) 3yo+ GB 6f 1y
(9) Villas Bullet | | | | | | 3 | Connor Planas | Simon Hodgson | Poor performer who's a deal worse off with Dequinto than when last of five behind him in a Brighton maiden last time. |
(7) Haveagobeau | | | | | | 5 | Charlie Bennett | Jim Boyle | Poor maiden (5f-1m) who's still to finish placed after 13 starts; can't be fancied on any of this summer's work. |
2nd (8) La Verite | | | | | | 3 | David Egan | Robert Cowell | Poor maiden (5f-9.5f) who hasn't finished placed in any of her 11 runs; Poetic Jack is clearly her yard's best chance. |
(1) Crocus Time | | | | | | 3 | Sam Hitchcott | Richard Hannon | Longstanding, regressive maiden who's been running over 7f this summer; won't be found a better opportunity but she's had 15 cracks at it now and is extremely inconsistent. |
4th (4) Poetic Jack | | | | | | 4 | Ray Dawson | Robert Cowell | Has done most of his racing at Chelmsford and appreciated the switch back from Tapeta when going close there a fortnight ago; one of the likelier winners. |
(6) Purple Poppy | | | | | | 6 | Franny Norton | Jimmy Fox | Gets away with 1m and struggled for toe behind Coolagh Magic over C&D a fortnight ago; came wide off the home turn that day and is 2lb better off but holds only each-way claims. |
3rd (3) Coolagh Magic | | | | | | 8 | William Carson | Anthony Carson | Better with each run back from an 18-month absence, culminating in a C&D second two weeks ago; this race is weaker if anything, so he has to go on the shortlist. |
1st (2) Shamardia | | | | | | 3 | Paddy Bradley | Ismail Mohammed | Not a bad comeback from stall 12 at Kempton in July but she's landed the outside stall again and needs to bounce back from a poor show on turf five weeks ago. |
(5) Dequinto | | | | | | 5 | Luke Morris | Tony Carroll | Longstanding, ex-Irish maiden (5f-1m) who finished best of the rest behind a long odds-on winner in a Brighton maiden last time; capable at this level if getting away and settling but therein lies the gamble. |
A dual course winner for Robyn Brisland before missing a chunk of his career, COOLAGH MAGIC was back to form over C&D a fortnight ago and is preferred to Chelmsford regular Poetic Jack, who's having his first run round here. Dequinto has the ability but is his own worst enemy.[Graham Wheldon]
Race 6: 16:32 Lingfield National Racehorse Week 7th-15th September Handicap (0-85) (4) 3yo+ GB 1m 4f
1st (1) Youthful King | | | | | | 5 | Jack Dace | Luke Dace | Goes well here, with two solid efforts over 1m2f in the spring but he's lost his way since (well held twice under Jack Dace last month); the handicapper is proving slow to relent and he'll need a major revival. |
(4) Graignes | | | | | | 8 | Pat Cosgrave | George Baker | On the downgrade this year but he's now 4lb lower than when last successful and offered more at Windsor three weeks ago; won't mind the step back up to 1m4f and has won on Polytrack, so there are reasons for optimism. |
(6) God Of Thunder | | | | | | 5 | Sam Hitchcott | Richard Hannon | Has lost his way in recent times, mainly on turf, but that means he's now only 1lb higher than when winning tidily over C&D in the spring (Optician fourth); suited by this track and a revival wouldn't surprise at all. |
4th (5) Prince Maxi | | | | | | 4 | David Egan | David Loughnane | Didn't progress for George Scott and goes for a new yard back from six weeks off; fared better last time but was allowed his own way in a small field in first-time blinkers (off today), so still has something to prove. |
3rd (3) Appier | | | | | | 5 | Ben Sanderson | S Woods | 3-5 over C&D, having overcome a very slow break when going in off 2lb lower in early summer; long odds-on to fluff the start again and he'll always need some luck given his style, but he arrives still in form. |
(7) Optician | | | | | | 4 | Luke Morris | Shaun Lycett | Ran up a four-timer at Wolverhampton in the winter, all in lesser company, latterly off 11lb lower; has continued in form off his revised mark, bumping into an improver last time, and should go well once more. |
2nd (9) Aviemore | | | | | | 3 | Franny Norton | Charlie Johnston | Made all and showed a good attitude when winning off a 5lb lower mark on turf in July; wasn't able to dominate when a beaten favourite last time and needs to improve for the longer trip, which is far from guaranteed on pedigree (dam was a sprinter). |
(2) Expert Witness | | | | | | 4 | Mia Nicholls | Sir Mark Todd | Has progressed well this season, winning twice, including for Mia Nicholls; ran as well as could have been expected in Listed race last time but she's gone up another 6lb for that, so will need another forward step going this far for the first time. |
(8) Surrey Fire | | | | | | 3 | Charles Bishop | Hughie Morrison | Hung left round Kempton when well held on his comeback and bounced back when making most to win a 1m2f novice here last time; needs more now handicapping but he's unexposed and the return to this longer trip should suit, so he's respected. |
The step back up to 1m4f should suit the lightly raced SURREY FIRE (nap), who is out of the yard's Cesarewitch (2m2f) winner Sweet Selection, and he's tipped to progress past some more exposed rivals. A 6lb rise since running in a Listed race won't help Expert Witness, while the sprint-bred Aviemore has to prove his stamina upped from 1m2f. Graignes is worth a look among the likely bigger prices though and he is second on the list.[Graham Wheldon]
Race 7: 17:05 Lingfield Get The Inside Track With raceday-ready.com Handicap (0-70) (5) 3yo GB 1m 2f
4th (5) Sweet Sister | | | | | | 3 | David Egan | Denis Coakley | Handicap mark hasn't proved a gift in two starts at this level and she didn't appear to relish the step up in trip behind Con Te Partiro over C&D in July; has it to prove for now. |
(2) Nazalan | | | | | | 3 | Kaiya Fraser | S Woods | Some fair 2yo form to go with a 5f novice win but his 2024 efforts don't match up and the big step up in trip looks more of an experiment than a plan; has worn cheekpieces on last two starts but not today. |
2nd (4) Alvesta | | | | | | 3 | William Carver | Andrew Balding | Kept mostly to turf this year but she looked to have more to come in her sole AW start, when not getting a run when she wanted one over C&D in July; lesser efforts returned to grass since but of interest back on AW. |
(6) Forever Noah | | | | | | 3 | Ray Dawson | Roger Varian | Consistent in defeat in 7f and 1m handicaps this year but was not obviously waiting for a step up in trip at the latter distance here last week; others have less to prove. |
3rd (1) Risen Again | | | | | | 3 | Pat Cosgrave | James Ferguson | Bettered his 1m handicap debut when upped to 1m2f at Beverley recently, pulling hard and looking held over 1f out but persevering in the closing stages to take second; faces a very different track today but still at the right end of his career. |
1st (3) Con Te Partiro | | | | | | 3 | Neil Callan | Richard Spencer | Four wins this year and he was too gritty for his main rival over C&D in July; had another scrap when unable to get there in time over 1m here since; up another 2lb but could raise his game further back at 1m2f. |
It will be interesting to see how free-going Risen Again is ridden with this lesser test of stamina at the trip than at Beverley last time out. He remains with some potential, while Con Ti Partiro looks sure to give another solid account back at 1m2f but ALVESTA didn't have things fall in her lap over C&D in July and she can score back on the AW for the first time since.[Emily Weber]
Race 8: 17:35 Lingfield Get Raceday Ready Fillies' Handicap (0-70) (5) 3yo+ GB 7f 1y
(5) Beveragino | | | | | | 3 | Ray Dawson | Michael Bell | 7f Tapeta maiden winner (first-time cheekpieces) at Wolverhampton in April; has finished last in her two subsequent handicaps; handy mark for her return from another short break but there's a bit to prove. |
3rd (6) Resonance | | | | | | 4 | Luke Morris | Tom Clover | 0-8; second over 7f on turf last year but well held in three handicaps this season, the last two in headgear; bit to prove after her effort at Windsor (1m, good to firm) last time. |
(8) Quorate | | | | | | 3 | William Cox | Charles Hills | Peak effort over 7f on turf last season; hard to fancy based on what she's produced on her last two starts; absent three months since sole 3yo run. |
(2) Ormolulu | | | | | | 4 | William Carver | Jamie Osborne | 6f winner on turf and Tapeta; handicapper has looked in control this season but she's slipped to a handy mark and may have a little more to offer now going up in trip. |
4th (7) Onthemoneyhoney | | | | | | 3 | John Fahy | Clive Cox | 6f turf winner on debut last year; unable to better that effort but showed signs of a revival at Kempton (1m, Polytrack) latest; drops 1lb and back down in trip; probable player. |
(3) Argentali | | | | | | 4 | Pat Cosgrave | George Baker | Has shown ability, in particular when just over 2l fourth here (6f, AW) in a fillies' novice event in July; below par on turf here latest and has since had wind surgery; tongue-tie now goes on; initial mark looks fair if she can return to the form of that second start; possible player. |
2nd (9) Twilight Dancer | | | | | | 4 | David Egan | Jonathan Portman | Triple 7f turf winner; placed over C&D in March, when 2lb higher; well below par on turf on her last two starts; revival needed. |
(4) Machiavellian Lady | | | | | | 3 | Charles Bishop | Eve Johnson Houghton | 7f fillies' novice winner (Polytrack); put some lesser efforts behind her when striking in a handicap for the first time at Wolverhampton (7f, Tapeta; first-time cheekpieces) latest; looked to have better to come there and should be a big player despite a 5lb rise. |
1st (1) Lady Dreamer | | | | | | 4 | Neil Callan | Tom Ward | Put up one of her better performances when making all over C&D latest, adding to three 6f wins; 5lb penalty will make things tougher but she looked to have a bit more up her sleeve and is shortlisted. |
Lady Dreamer is shortlisted after making all over C&D last time but she may find it tough to concede 9lb successfully to MACHIAVELLIAN LADY, who looked to have better to come when striking for the first time in a handicap at Wolverhampton. Ormolulu and Onthemoneyhoney are others of interest.[Jonathan Doidge]
