1st (2) (0.5/1 +25%) Spartan Army |
0.5/1(+25%) | (2) Spartan Army 0.5/1, Progressive 10f winner on Flat for Joseph O'Brien. Changed hands for 170,000 gns and went in at the first time of asking in this sphere at Wetherby in November. Better form in defeat when second at Wincanton and will find this a lot easier than the Adonis last time.
2nd (1) (3/1 -33%) Jilaijone |
3/1(-33%) | (1) Jilaijone 3/1, Fair ex-French hurdler who made a winning start for his new yard in 18f juvenile at Fontwell. Trio of solid efforts followed but he took a backward step at Exeter 3 weeks ago. Back in a juvenile hurdle and he should be a big factor.
3rd (4) (18/1 -29%) Faded Fantasy |
18/1(-29%) | (4) Faded Fantasy 18/1, Fair maiden on the Flat for Ger Lyons. Held up and never involved both starts at this venue in recent weeks and looks a handicap project.
4th (5) (200/1 -300%) The Rebel Breen |
200/1(-300%) | (5) The Rebel Breen 200/1, Modest maiden on the Flat. Hurdles debut wasn't devoid of promise but well held at Huntingdon since. Tongue tie on for the first time in this code.
5th (7) (40/1 -186%) Only Fools |
40/1(-186%) | (7) Only Fools 40/1, Second foal, dam maiden on Flat. Fair on Flat in France (stays 1½m). Winner of claimer and handicap on last 2 starts. Left P. de Chevigny €13,000 in November and joined successful NH yard.
6th (6) (300/1 -275%) La Referi |
300/1(-275%) | (6) La Referi 300/1, Looks limited on early evidence.
|PU| (3) (8/1 +27%) Call Me Arthur |
8/1(+27%) | (3) Call Me Arthur 8/1, €30,000 3-y-o, Soldier of Fortune gelding. Closely related to 3 winners, including temperamental but modest chaser Expanding Universe. Showed a bit on January's debut at Ffos Las (15.8f) but looked in need of more of a test. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 4 race.
SPARTAN ARMY found stepping back up in grade too much in the Adonis last month and the son of Highland Reel might prove too strong for his rivals down in class, despite having to carry a 7lb penalty. Call Me Arthur attracted market interest ahead of his racecourse debut at Ffos Las and he could fare better with that run behind him. Jilaijone is fancied to chase them home, while Only Fools can't be ruled out on her first start for the David Pipe team.
This represents a big drop in class for SPARTAN ARMY given he contested the Adonis at Kempton a month ago and he's fancied to get right back on track. Jilaijone was disappointing in handicap company last time but is still the obvious threat, though Only Fools did win twice on the Flat in France.
Back down in class SPARTAN ARMY has the best chance. The Pipe runners Jilaijone and Only Fools look the biggest dangers.

1st (2) (1.1/1 +12%) Donnie Azoff |
1.1/1(+12%) | (2) Donnie Azoff 1.1/1, Placed all 3 starts in bumpers in 2020 but disappointed on hurdles bow in November of that year. After missing 2021, much more like it with a couple of runner-up efforts this term and he just about sets the standard.
2nd (8) (8/1 +64%) Secret Plan |
8/1(+64%) | (8) Secret Plan 8/1, Half-brother to 3 winners, including winning hurdler/useful chaser Secret Reprieve and fair hurdler/chaser The Composeur. Encouraging debut fourth of 13 in a bumper at Chepstow in November but opening effort over hurdles at that venue a month later was hardly brimming with promise.
3rd (10) (25/1 +24%) Sam's Amour |
25/1(+24%) | (10) Sam's Amour 25/1, Black Sam Bellamy mare who shaped like a stayer when second of 7 in bumper at Fontwell on debut. Well held at Wincanton next time and no impact switched to timber upped to 21.8f 3 weeks ago.
4th (4) (3.5/1 -40%) Fuji Rocks |
3.5/1(-40%) | (4) Fuji Rocks 3.5/1, Travelled well when third in 2 bumpers in the autumn and promise without threatening first 2 starts over hurdles. Yet to be asked for effort when stumbling and unseating rider 4 out at Ludlow latest. Remains open to progress.
5th (3) (5.5/1 +45%) Fever Dream |
5.5/1(+45%) | (3) Fever Dream 5.5/1, Runner-up sole start in Irish points and made a promising start when third of 8 in novice hurdle at Sandown this month. Didn't really build on that over C&D 10 days and he may need a little more time.
6th (6) (9/1 +10%) Moytier |
9/1(+10%) | (6) Moytier 9/1, Fair form when placed both starts over hurdles in France in 2020/21. Claimed for €13,006 but must have had share of issues given he was off the track for best part of 2 years. Shaped as though retaining some ability at Wincanton last month and this will reveal more.
7th (5) (80/1 -344%) Hammer Dan |
80/1(-344%) | (5) Hammer Dan 80/1, Fetched £62,000 after finishing second in a maiden point last month. Half-brother to a bumper/hurdles winner but tongue tied and shaped as though amiss in a course bumper 10 days ago. Turned out pretty quickly now hurdling.
8th (7) (16/1 +52%) Rivers Corner |
16/1(+52%) | (7) Rivers Corner 16/1, Modest in bumpers and shaped with a little encouragement making hurdling bow at Fontwell in January. Left Joe Tizzard after and well held at Chepstow.
|PU| (1) (200/1 -300%) Clinton Lane |
200/1(-300%) | (1) Clinton Lane 200/1, No impact in an Exeter bumper in January. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 4 race.
Plenty of these would need to improve on what they have shown so far, but that can't be said for DONNIE AZOFF, who is taken to go one better having finished a good second at Fontwell on his latest start. Fuji Rocks was travelling well when stumbling and unseating his rider on the bend at Ludlow last week and he is likely to enter calculations. Moytier appeals most of the remainder.
This sharp test will suit DONNIE AZOFF and in a race lacking strength in depth, it looks a good chance for him to open his account. Fuji Rocks is open to improvement and is second choice, with Gardons La another to consider.
This looks a good chance for DONNIE AZOFF to get off the mark. Fever Dream is the suggested second choice.

1st (6) (3.5/1 +36%) Haldon Hill |
3.5/1(+36%) | (6) Haldon Hill 3.5/1, Finally gained his first success over fences at Ffos Las (2m5f) in November and, in first-time cheekpieces, easily resumed winning ways back at the same course (23.8f) last time. Could still have more to offer at this trip.
2nd (3) (3.5/1 +13%) Mumbo Jumbo |
3.5/1(+13%) | (3) Mumbo Jumbo 3.5/1, Matched his hurdles form at the first attempt over fences when runner-up at Uttoxeter (22.5f) in October. Ran to a similar level when third at Sandown (20.1f) the following month, but not in the same form last time. Remains early days, though.
3rd (4) (2/1 +11%) Art Decco |
2/1(+11%) | (4) Art Decco 2/1, Has quickly made up into a better chaser than hurdler this season, opening his account at the fourth attempt over fences in handicap at Fontwell (21.6f) in January. Can follow up returned to this longer trip.
4th (1) (4/1 -33%) Garincha |
4/1(-33%) | (1) Garincha 4/1, Has won 2 of his 4 starts sent chasing this season, making a winning debut over fences at Bangor in November (20.3f) and resuming his progress when scoring at Fontwell (19.5f) earlier this month. Respected as he goes up in distance.
5th (2) (150/1 -275%) Brazos |
150/1(-275%) | (2) Brazos 150/1, Stepped up on low-key reappearance when runner-up at Cheltenham (3m) in December. However, pulled up both starts since, leaving John Joseph Murphy after the first occasion. Has enough to prove on chase debut.
|F| (5) (7/1 -27%) Diegos Way |
7/1(-27%) | (5) Diegos Way 7/1, Irish raider who got off the mark in handicap chase at Bangor (3m) in October. Ran creditably from out of the handicap when fifth of 12 in veterans' event at Navan (3m) last time and he can give his running again. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 4 race.
The form of GARINCHA's Fontwell success took a timely boost when the runner-up won at Huntingdon next time out. A 3lb rise in the handicap ought to be more than manageable with that in mind, and he is open to further progress up in trip. Art Decco bolted up on his latest outing and must feature prominently in calculations once again, along with Haldon Hill, who struck at Ffos Las earlier this month.
ART DECCO got off the mark when forging clear for success at Fontwell last time and he is taken to follow up with more to come returned to this longer trip. The 7-y-o can get the better of Garincha and Haldon Hill, who also both arrive on the back of victories on their latest outings.
This drop in class may well enable MUMBO JUMBO (nap) to get off the mark. Art Decco is feared most.

1st (4) (1.75/1 +30%) Decorated |
1.75/1(+30%) | (4) Decorated 1.75/1, Bumper winner who progressed again over hurdles when making all in novice at Sedgefield (19.8f) in December. Not taken lightly as he makes handicap debut with tongue strap on first time.
2nd (3) (6.5/1 -18%) Earth King |
6.5/1(-18%) | (3) Earth King 6.5/1, Promise on first of 2 runs in bumpers for Jack Barber back in 2020/21. Has been going the right way in a trio of starts over hurdles this season, readily opening his account in novice at Exeter (18.5f) last month. Merits consideration on handicap bow.
3rd (2) (3.5/1 +0%) Operation Manna |
3.5/1(+0%) | (2) Operation Manna 3.5/1, Bumper/maiden hurdle winner last season who took another step forward when making a successful handicap debut at Chepstow (19.4f) on his return. Ran well when third at Newcastle next time, but needs to leave a disappointing run last time behind him.
4th (1) (8.5/1 -143%) Balko Saint |
8.5/1(-143%) | (1) Balko Saint 8.5/1, Dual winner over hurdles last term, although ended the campaign out of form and struggled on his first 3 starts this season over fences. However, runner-up at Wincanton (20.2f) last time and he's capable off his current mark reverted to hurdling. Major player.
5th (5) (3/1 +54%) Oxygen |
3/1(+54%) | (5) Oxygen 3/1, Winner of a newcomers' event over hurdles in France in 2021. Made a low-key start for his current connections, but step back in the right direction when sixth of 11 in handicap at Ffos Las (2m4f) in February. Task is now to build on that effort.
|PU| (6) (22/1 -22%) Roscoe Tara |
22/1(-22%) | (6) Roscoe Tara 22/1, No better than mid-division in a pair of bumpers but showed more in 3 starts over hurdles, third in maiden at Warwick (2m5f) when last seen back in March 2021. Has lengthy absence to overcome as he makes his handicap debut. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 4 race.
BALKO SAINT has dropped a long way in the ratings since he was last seen over hurdles and has an obvious chance of exploiting the opportunity if revitalised by the switch back to timber. The progressive Decorated looks the the chief danger to the selection after notching a bloodless success at Sedgefield in December, while Operation Manna is better than he showed over 3m at Chepstow last time.
Having been campaigned over fences this season, BALKO SAINT ran better than for a while when runner-up at Wincanton last time and probably would have won if not for errors in the latter stages. The 6-y-o is on a workable mark now back over hurdles and he can see off the challenge of last-time-out winners Decorated and Earth King.
As a last-time-out winner who remains unexposed beyond 2m, DECORATED may well be the answer. Earth King is second choice.

1st (4) (1.5/1 -9%) Iberio |
1.5/1(-9%) | (4) Iberio 1.5/1, Improved with cheekpieces added/switched to handicaps last term, scoring twice over 19f here, and latest second to the in-form Hititi at Exeter was a decent effort. However, he didn't appear to get home when tried over this trip on penultimate start.
2nd (3) (3.5/1 +13%) Guernesey |
3.5/1(+13%) | (3) Guernesey 3.5/1, Generally consistent when trained by Philip Hobbs, scoring at Warwick (19f, good) in October. Has found life tougher since, though, and he's opposable up in trip here following a low-key recent debut for this yard at Fontwell.
3rd (1) (8/1 -167%) Mr Tambourine Man |
8/1(-167%) | (1) Mr Tambourine Man 8/1, Winner of handicap hurdles at Exeter (21.6f) and Ffos Las (2½m) on good/good to soft last spring. However, resumes from a 10-month break on a tough-looking mark and his stamina has to be taken on trust.
4th (5) (2/1 +60%) My Last Oscar |
2/1(+60%) | (5) My Last Oscar 2/1, Successful twice last term, on the second occasion accounting for 14 rivals in a C&D handicap (soft). Early faller back from a break at Ffos Las last week but, granted a clear round, he could play a part returned to this course. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 3 race.
Mr Tambourine Man has been consistent over hurdles and is likely to make a bold bid to land a hat-trick of wins in this discipline. However, he steps back up in class and has another 7lb to shoulder on his first outing since May. Therefore, the vote goes to APPLE ROCK, who has enjoyed a fine campaign, winning three on the bounce, and is taken to bounce back from a slightly below-par display at Ascot last month. Iberio completes the shortlist.
The one with the most compelling claims is APPLE ROCK, who typically found plenty for pressure when completing the hat-trick here at the end of last year. He looked a little short of full match-fitness back from 7 weeks off at Ascot and, with that run under his belt, the 9-y-o can resume winning ways. My Last Oscar, also a C&D winner on his sole previous visit to Taunton, may emerge as the main danger given that this trip is a concern for both Iberio and Mr Tambourine Man.
Provided his stamina holds out back over 3m, IBERIO could well register a third course success. Apple Rock is second choice.

1st (6) (2.5/1 +50%) Flash Gorcombe |
2.5/1(+50%) | (6) Flash Gorcombe 2.5/1, Offered something to work on sent chasing for his handicap debut at Exeter (19.2f) on New Year's Day, clear ability evident in his matching strides with the winner until early in the home straight. Held back by mistakes here since.
2nd (3) (6/1 +25%) Poet's Reflection |
6/1(+25%) | (3) Poet's Reflection 6/1, Hurdles winner here in March 2021 but off the track since the following spring and now goes chasing.
3rd (5) (9/1 -38%) Pencil |
9/1(-38%) | (5) Pencil 9/1, In first-time hood, showed bit more than previously in novice hurdle at Exeter in December. Again shaped better than result in similar event at Ffos Las the following month but now tackles the larger obstacles following a tame handicap debut.
4th (4) (3/1 -50%) Howyouplaythegame |
3/1(-50%) | (4) Howyouplaythegame 3/1, Looked limited over hurdles but switched to a handicap over fences and much more like it when second at Market Rasen3 weeks ago. Obvious claims up 1 lb.
|PU| (1) (4.5/1 -13%) Prime Pretender |
4.5/1(-13%) | (1) Prime Pretender 4.5/1, Still a maiden but plenty of decent placed efforts this season at up to 21f. Latest Ffos Las performance wasn't one of his better efforts and a visor is now reached for.
|PU| (2) (5/1 +33%) Treasure Dillon |
5/1(+33%) | (2) Treasure Dillon 5/1, Struggled for form sent chasing this season and fared no better back over timber last week. Visor replaces cheekpieces. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 5 race.
A highly-encouraging second on his chase debut at Market Rasen, HOWYOUPLAYTHEGAME must hold every chance if building upon that career-best effort. The selection remains unexposed and gets the vote ahead of 16-race maiden Prime Pretender, who has been disappointing of late but will enjoy these conditions. Treasure Dillon and Flash Gorcombe can pick up the pieces if each of the aforementioned pair falter.
HOWYOUPLAYTHEGAME looked a different proposition switched to a handicap over fences when second at Market Rasen 18 days ago and this looks a good chance for him to go one place better. None of his rivals look particularly solid but Flash Gorcombe showed enough at Exeter to think he can be a factor from his lowly mark.
Unexposed HOWYOUPLAYTHEGAME is taken to build on his Market Rasen effort and go one better. Prime Pretender is second choice.

1st (5) (1.62/1 +35%) Johnnywho |
1.62/1(+35%) | (5) Johnnywho 1.62/1, Wide-margin winner of sole start between the flags back in October 2021. Likely to come into his own when switched to jumps/faced with a stiffer test in time but he's a strong candidate on this Rules debut nonetheless.
2nd (7) (3/1 +14%) Pentire Head |
3/1(+14%) | (7) Pentire Head 3/1, Fetched €145,000 as a 3-y-o and has shown plenty of ability in bumpers at Chepstow and Exeter. Probably not entirely straightforward but he's high on the shortlist all the same.
3rd (3) (9/1 +0%) I Am No Risk |
9/1(+0%) | (3) I Am No Risk 9/1, Half-brother to 3 winners, including fairly useful hurdle winner/chaser Espion du Chenet. Positives to glean from debut fourth in a 9-runner Ayr bumper (2m, good to soft) last month and he'll be more street-wise now.
4th (4) (20/1 +20%) Jacobs Acre |
20/1(+20%) | (4) Jacobs Acre 20/1, €15,000 3-y-o. Yard's newcomers typically come on for a run and this one is probably best watched on this occasion, unless the betting suggests otherwise.
5th (10) (5/1 -43%) Mr Mackay |
5/1(-43%) | (10) Mr Mackay 5/1, Has made the frame on each of his 3 starts in bumpers, including in a listed contest at Cheltenham on penultimate start. Sets the standard on that form but he was turned over when odds on at Hereford last time.
6th (2) (12/1 +25%) Dish Of The Day |
12/1(+25%) | (2) Dish Of The Day 12/1, €6,000 3-y-o. Half-brother to smart hurdler Bear Ghylls, stays 3m. Dam, ran once in point, sister to bumper winner/useful hurdler (stayed 3m) Merrydown. Yard boasts a good strike rate in bumpers and the market will be instructive.
7th (9) (40/1 +50%) Getuptheyard |
40/1(+50%) | (9) Getuptheyard 40/1, £6,000 3-y-o out of an unraced sister to fair hurdler/fairly useful chaser The Caddy Rose (winner up to 2¾m). Yard rarely strikes with newcomers and it's easy enough to look elsewhere.
8th (8) (250/1 -150%) Stancheski |
250/1(-150%) | (8) Stancheski 250/1, Green in a pair of bumpers at Newton Abbot during the autumn and best watched for now.
|PU| (6) (8/1 +27%) Kruger Park |
8/1(+27%) | (6) Kruger Park 8/1, From a good family and shaped with encouragement when third at Hereford in December. However, subsequent effort at Chepstow represented a step in the wrong direction and jockey bookings suggest that Pentire Head is the stable No 1. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 5 race.
Narrowly denied at Exeter last time out, PENTIRE HEAD has shown more than enough in both career outings to suggest that he can get off the mark on this occasion. Conditions should be of no inconvenience and he can get the better of Mr Mackay, who ran creditably in Listed company on his penultimate start. Johnnywho appeals most of the newcomers as an Irish point-to-point winner.
JOHNNYWHO is of strong interest on this Rules debut given that he had none other than subsequent Grade 1 hurdles winner Hermes Allen back in third when easily winning a maiden point in October 2021. This scenario probably won't be entirely ideal but the hint should nevertheless be taken if the market speaks in his favour. It was disappointing that Mr Mackay failed to land the odds at Hereford last time, and it's possible that Pentire Head and Bhaloo will emerge as the main dangers.
The vote goes to interesting rules debutant JOHNNYWHO. Pentire Head is feared most.
Ths is the racecard key.

Horse racing is a popular and historic sport in the UK, with a tradition dating back centuries. It is a multi-billion pound industry that attracts millions of spectators each year and generates significant economic activity.
There are two main types of horse racing in the UK: flat racing and jump racing. Flat racing is run on a level course and is typically shorter in distance, while jump racing involves horses jumping over obstacles and is generally longer in distance. Both types of racing are popular with spectators and bettors, and they take place at various racetracks throughout the country.
The most famous horse racing event in the UK is the Grand National, which is held annually at Aintree Racecourse in Liverpool. It is a jump racing event that is known for its challenging course and has become a national institution in the UK. Other notable horse racing events in the UK include the Derby, held at Epsom Downs Racecourse in Surrey, and the Royal Ascot, held at Ascot Racecourse in Berkshire.
Horse racing in the UK is regulated by the British Horseracing Authority (BHA), which sets rules and standards for the industry. It is responsible for the welfare of racehorses and the safety of jockeys and trainers, as well as ensuring fair and transparent racing practices.
In addition to its economic and cultural importance, horse racing in the UK also plays a significant role in the breeding and training of thoroughbred horses. Many of the world's top thoroughbreds are bred and trained in the UK, and the industry plays a vital role in the preservation and promotion of the breed.
Overall, horse racing is an integral part of British culture and a major contributor to the country's economy. It is a thrilling and exciting sport that continues to attract a loyal following and generate significant interest from spectators and bettors around the world.
