1st (4) (4/9 +64%) Hot Fuss |
4/9(+64%) | (4) Hot Fuss 4/9, Useful Flat performer who chased home subsequent Cheltenham Grade 2 winner East India Dock on his Wincanton hurdle debut in October. Surely only a matter of time before he's winning over hurdles. Very talented on the Flat and bumped into East India Dock when second on hurdle debut. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
2nd (3) (14/1 -56%) Galactic Charm |
14/1(-56%) | (3) Galactic Charm 14/1, Fairly useful handicapper on Flat (stays 2m) for Michael Bell. New connections acquired him for 47,000 gns in October. One of 2 runners for a stable which does well here. Useful 1m4f winner on the Flat; not ruled out on hurdle debut; slow ground a question mark. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
3rd (2) (7/1 -110%) City Of London |
7/1(-110%) | (2) City Of London 7/1, Half-brother to connections' smart hurdler Nemean Lion. 7/2, showed plenty of ability when second of 5 in juvenile hurdle on debut in October. Should improve and go well again. Half-brother to Nemean Lion who was a promising second at Chepstow on his debut. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
4th (1) (18/1 -29%) See The Green |
18/1(-29%) | (1) See The Green 18/1, Fairly useful on Flat for Owen Burrows and made a successful start to his hurdle career in Ludlow juvenile last month. That was an ordinary race but he should progress. Carries penalty and form of his Ludlow win may be modest, but he could have more to offer. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
5th (7) (13/2 +0%) Small Fry |
13/2(+0%) | (7) Small Fry 13/2, Harzand gelding who has developed into a fairly useful handicapper on the Flat, registering 3 victories at up to 14.5f. Ran to only a modest level when third on his Fontwell hurdle debut last month but he should improve for the experience. Turned over at 8-15 on hurdle debut but progressive on Flat previously; not written off. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 2 race.
A 7f winner on the Flat, HOT FUSS made a promising debut over hurdles when second to East India Dock at Wincanton. The latter has subsequently returned an impressive winner of a Grade 2 contest at Cheltenham, so Tom Dascombe's charge looks the one to side with on the strength of that form. City Of London finished a creditable runner-up at Chepstow considering that was his racecourse bow and he can feature again. Small Fry is a likely improver and is preferred to the penalised See The Green.
An interesting juvenile, although it's still hard to ignore the claims of HOT FUSS who gave last month's Cheltenham Grade 2 winner East India Dock a race on his Wincanton hurdle debut in October. City of London should build on his opening run at Chepstow, while Melon and Galactic Charm have done enough on the Flat to think they can do well in juvenile hurdles.
Having bumped into subsequent Grade 2 winner East India Dock when second on his hurdle debut at Wincanton, HOT FUSS can go one better.

1st (1) (6/4 +29%) Mount Tempest |
6/4(+29%) | (1) Mount Tempest 6/4, Improved for the fitting of blinkers when winning this last year before following up at Wetherby. Ended last term with a solid second at Wincanton and shaped as if in good heart when fourth at Bangor on return. Headgear back on and should make a bold bid. Won this last year and he's a solid contender following a respectable reappearance run. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
2nd (5) (5/2 -43%) Intimate |
5/2(-43%) | (5) Intimate 5/2, Took form to a whole new level over hurdles when successful at Hereford when last seen in March, putting his rivals to the sword a fair way out. Goes chasing now and must be respected for in-form yard. Chase debut; bolted up over hurdles when last seen and reappears with yard in fine form. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
3rd (6) (8/1 +68%) Calgary Tiger |
8/1(+68%) | (6) Calgary Tiger 8/1, Free-going sort who left hurdles form well behind when winning first 2 starts over fences early last year and posted best effort since when second at Worcester (16.5f) in June. Ran one of his better races after 4 months off when third at Aintree last month but needs to build on that now. Encouraging third at Aintree four weeks ago and could give another good account. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
4th (2) (16/1 -146%) Mint Gold |
16/1(-146%) | (2) Mint Gold 16/1, Latest win in chase at Musselburgh a year ago. Held form well when placed last 3 starts but proving less than straightforward, including when third at Carlisle on return. Reappeared with fair third at Carlisle and could show the benefit of that outing today. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
5th (3) (10/3 +39%) Invincible Nao |
10/3(+39%) | (3) Invincible Nao 10/3, Opened chase account with a wide-margin victory at Fakenham (21f, soft) in February before finishing a fine second here (20f). Unseated rider early on at Ascot final start but his jumping has otherwise been sound and not taken lightly on return. Front-runner who was close second over 2m4f here in March; could make bold bid on return. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 3 race.
MOUNT TEMPEST won last year's renewal and looks to have strong claims of repeating that success. A recent pipe-opener at Bangor will have brought him on and Dan Skelton's inmate can resume winning ways off his current mark. Calgary Tiger made a bold bid from the front when third at Aintree and could be thereabouts at the finish once again. Mint Gold is perfectly at home in this grade and can also get involved if building on his third at Carlisle.
MOUNT TEMPEST shaped well on his comeback run at Bangor which should put him spot on as he bids for a second successive win in this. Intimate showed improved form to get off the mark over hurdles in comprehensive fashion at Hereford in March and looks an interesting recruit to chasing.
Topweight MOUNT TEMPEST won this last year and earns the vote on the back of his respectable reappearance fourth at Bangor.

1st (3) (4/1 -78%) Bill Joyce |
4/1(-78%) | (3) Bill Joyce 4/1, £225,000 point recruit who won his first 2 bumpers. Found the Champion Bumper at Cheltenham too much but he outclassed 7 opponents with a striking success at Carlisle a month ago (20f). Sure to leave bare form well behind. Point and two-time bumper winner who won easily on hurdle debut; firmly in calculations. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
2nd (6) (5/2 +0%) Quebecois |
5/2(+0%) | (6) Quebecois 5/2, Expensive purchase after finishing second in a point and made no mistake first time under Rules, recording a facile success at Exeter in December. Well held in Champion Bumper at Cheltenham 3 months on but he jumped really nicely when an impressive winner on hurdles debut at Chepstow in October. Easily won maiden hurdle at Chepstow; stable has won two of the last five runnings; player. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
3rd (5) (11/1 -10%) Pony Soprano |
11/1(-10%) | (5) Pony Soprano 11/1, €135,000 Blue Bresil gelding. Dam, well held in bumpers, closely related to useful hurdler/chaser (stayed 3m) Royal Player. Shaped like a stayer when third of 8 in a course bumper in February and he was expertly prepared to make a winning hurdles bow with a bit to spare at Exeter in October. Hurdle debut win at Exeter; could have lots more to offer; top trainer won this last year. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|PU| (4) (6/4 +40%) Kingston Pride |
6/4(+40%) | (4) Kingston Pride 6/4, Successful sole start in Irish points last year and confirmed the promise of his Rules debut when readily landing the odds in an Exeter bumper in April. Also created a fine impression when landing the odds with the minimum of fuss at Uttoxeter 3 weeks ago. Plenty of scope for progress. Had plenty in hand on hurdle debut and he's a highly likeable prospect for his top yard. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|PU| (2) (10/1 +44%) Ballytechno |
10/1(+44%) | (2) Ballytechno 10/1, Showed minor promise in bumpers and different proposition sent hurdling for new yard supplementing his maiden success switched to a handicap at Ascot a month ago (19.3f). Value for extra than day and limit not reached but this is a different ask. Takes a leap in grade but won readily last time; remains to be seen where limitations lie. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|PU| (1) (18/1 -140%) Admiral Stewart |
18/1(-140%) | (1) Admiral Stewart 18/1, £130,000 5-y-o. Half-brother to numerous winners, including useful hurdler/chaser The Crafty Butcher. Successful on second of 2 starts in Irish points and confirmed the promise of his bumper second when going one place better on hurdles debut at Ffos Las a fortnight ago. More to come up in trip. Made all at Ffos Las; this 3m point winner is open to further improvement now up in trip. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 1 race.
A bumper winner at Exeter, KINGSTON PRIDE landed the odds with the minimum of fuss at Uttoxeter on his hurdles bow. He looks another potentially smart prospect for the Nicky Henderson team and can take this step up in class in his stride. Dual bumper winner Bill Joyce shaped well when scoring at Carlisle on his first start over timber and may emerge as the main threat, although Admiral Stewart left a good impression when successful at Ffos Las and should not be underestimated.
As you'd expect for a Grade 2 novice, there's considerable potential on show, with BILL JOYCE just about the pick of the sextet. The fact he was sent off a single-figure price for the Champion Bumper in the spring confirms the regard he's held in and he made a smooth transition to hurdling at Carlisle 3 weeks ago. All 5 rivals are potential threats, headed by Quebecois and Kingston Pride.
Having won very easily on last month's hurdle debut at Carlisle, BILL JOYCE is the selection ahead of Quebecois.

1st (2) (5/2 +0%) Handstands |
5/2(+0%) | (2) Handstands 5/2, Won on sole outing in points before landing his first 3 starts over hurdles last term. Limitations exposed at the Cheltenham Festival and, having been strong in the betting on return/chase debut, departed 3 out at Wincanton (20.2f, good) last month. Remains a potentially smart novice chaser. Listed novice hurdle winner; had a chance when falling three out on chase debut in Grade 2. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
2nd (3) (11/8 +31%) Resplendent Grey |
11/8(+31%) | (3) Resplendent Grey 11/8, Ended last season on the up over hurdles and perfect start to chase career when accounting for 5 rivals in a 2½m Uttoxeter handicap on return. Ran a cracker upped in trip/grade when runner-up in a listed chase at Cheltenham (24.5f, good to soft) last month and should have even more to offer. Close second in Listed chase at Cheltenham and has leading claims on that form. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
3rd (5) (4/1 +38%) Saint Davy |
4/1(+38%) | (5) Saint Davy 4/1, Bumper/novice hurdle winner who took his form to land back-to-back handicaps upon returning at Ludlow/this course earlier this year. Probably best not judged too harshly on his subsequent Uttoxeter sixth in March and is one to be positive about now embarking on a chase career. Lightly raced point winner who could take his form to a new level now tackling fences. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
4th (6) (8/1 -100%) Welcom To Cartries |
8/1(-100%) | (6) Welcom To Cartries 8/1, Easy winner of sole start in Irish points and confirmed hurdling debut promise when scoring at Ascot. Unable to justify favouritism when runner-up in Grade 2 River Don and proved a let down sent handicapping at Ayr, but remains very much the type to make a better chaser. Had a wind op/tongue tied. Runner-up in 3m Grade 2 novice hurdle; he's the type to be even better over fences. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
5th (1) (11/1 -29%) Cadell |
11/1(-29%) | (1) Cadell 11/1, Unbeaten in points. Fairly useful form over hurdles last season and he took a sizeable step forward from his chase debut effort when making all in a 3-runner Wetherby novice (24.2f) 5 weeks ago, quickening clear from 4 out. Hiked up in grade but holds leading claims with better to come. Easy win at Wetherby; this is tougher but he's in excellent hands to continue to progress. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 1 race.
In an open event, marginal preference is for RESPLENDENT GREY, who chased home a useful rival when finishing second in a Listed novice chase at Cheltenham last month. Cadell only had to beat two rivals at Wetherby, but he did it in impressive fashion and Lucinda Russell's six-year-old should not be underestimated. Handstands has some questions to answer right now, so Welcom To Cartries is the pick of the remainder.
RESPLENDENT GREY may well have arrived unbeaten over fences had he jumped the last couple of fences better at Cheltenham 3 weeks ago and, with further progress on the cards, Olly Murphy's 6-y-o gets the nod to come out on top at the expense of Handstands, who was sent off a warm order on his chasing debut at Wincanton last month but departed just as the race was heating up. Cadell and chasing-debutant Welcom To Cartries can fight out third.
It will take a very good performance to beat RESPLENDENT GREY, who was a close second in a Listed novice chase at Cheltenham.

1st (8) (9/4 +10%) Hoe Joly Smoke |
9/4(+10%) | (8) Hoe Joly Smoke 9/4, Successful sole outing between the flags and matched hurdles form at first time of asking in this sphere when second of 6 in handicap chase at Uttoxeter (20f, good to soft) 49 days ago. Step up in trip should suit and remains with potential over fences. Tongue strap on first time Promising second on chase debut and he's open to further improvement now back up in trip. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
2nd (5) (10/3 +44%) Passing Well |
10/3(+44%) | (5) Passing Well 10/3, Won 1 of his 6 starts over fences and returned with creditable second of 6 in handicap chase at this course (20f, good) 26 days ago. Should give another good account but others look better treated. Returned to form when runner-up over 2m4f here on reappearance; worth another crack at 3m. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
3rd (3) (17/2 +39%) Jupiter Du Gite |
17/2(+39%) | (3) Jupiter Du Gite 17/2, Not straightforward but proved more tractable switched to fences, runner-up on debut in this sphere at Hereford prior to going one better in good style at Uttoxeter (20f) in March. Returned with solid second at Fontwell (19.5f, good to soft) 63 days ago and can't be ruled out here. Headstrong front-runner who has stamina to prove, but he's shown some promising form. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
4th (6) (5/2 +17%) Jupiter Allen |
5/2(+17%) | (6) Jupiter Allen 5/2, Dual winner over hurdles who advanced his form when landing 9-runner handicap chase at Exeter (24.2f, good to soft) 45 days ago. Looks to have more to offer so he must enter calculations. Won at Exeter on second chase start; only five and a 5lb rise may not stop him today. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
5th (7) (10/1 +17%) King's Threshold |
10/1(+17%) | (7) King's Threshold 10/1, A fairly useful hurdler who has improved over fences, bagging 21f Ascot handicap in March. Beat only one at Wetherby on his return though so needs to bounce back. Won at Ascot in March but has to improve a bundle for last month's reappearance run. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|PU| (9) (14/1 +44%) Bali Body |
14/1(+44%) | (9) Bali Body 14/1, Won over C&D 3 years ago and posted solid placed efforts, back from 2 years off, in a couple of starts last term. Further 12-month absence to overcome here, however, and others are more appealing. C&D winner who has run really well after an absence in the past and is not ruled out. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 3 race.
JUPITER DU GITE bounced back to form when a close second over an extended 2m3f at Fontwell on his seasonal return and this step up in trip could help him to go one better. Beachcomber (second) and Tea Clipper (third) are closely matched based on their meeting at Exeter last month and they have to be of interest once again. Jupiter Allen edges out Hoe Joly Smoke to be best of the rest.
Preference is for HOE JOLY SMOKE, who made a good start over the larger obstacles at Uttoxeter in October and should appreciate the step back up in trip here. Jupiter Allen and Beachcomber head the list of dangers.
Preference is for HOE JOLY SMOKE (nap), who showed his best hurdle form at 3m and was a promising second over 2m4f on his chase debut.

1st (7) (15/2 +38%) Razzle Dazzle Boy |
15/2(+38%) | (7) Razzle Dazzle Boy 15/2, Fair maiden hurdler. Posted a solid sixth of 15 in handicap at Cheltenham (16.4f, good to soft) 21 days ago. Ought to be in the shake-up eased 1 lb. Wasn't ahead of his mark on recent handicap debut at Cheltenham; may yet do better. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
2nd (5) (85/40 +23%) Fasol |
85/40(+23%) | (5) Fasol 85/40, A very useful winning stayer on Flat in France. Yet to match that form over hurdles, though not disgraced when fourth of 15 on his handicap debut at Cheltenham 21 days ago. Remains with potential in this sphere. Smart stayer; bit to find on Cheltenham run but can come on for the run; greatly respected. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
3rd (4) (11/8 +61%) Authentic Legacy |
11/8(+61%) | (4) Authentic Legacy 11/8, Authorized gelding has made a promising start in this sphere when runner-up on all three starts, latest in 2m1f novice at Fontwell 19 days ago. Looks to have more to offer so merits serious consideration now handicapping. Promising 4yo; interesting handicap newcomer; yard won this 3 times in last 9 years. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
4th (2) (6/1 -50%) I Wish You |
6/1(-50%) | (2) I Wish You 6/1, Consistent sort who got off the mark in 10-runner novice hurdle at Carlisle (17.2f, soft) 50 days ago. That form has been franked so he needs considering on his handicap debut. Showed fighting spirit when winning 2m1f Carlisle novice; has potential on handicap debut. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
5th (1) (33/1 -18%) Kissman |
33/1(-18%) | (1) Kissman 33/1, A fairly useful winner hurdler in France for E. d'Andigne. Changed hands for €125,000 but he came in last of 4 in handicap hurdle at Fontwell (19.1f, good to soft) 28 days ago. Worth another chance for good yard. Ready 2m2f win on final French start; tailed off on British debut; others more likely. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
6th (8) (11/1 +21%) Ellerton |
11/1(+21%) | (8) Ellerton 11/1, In good form without winning over hurdles, although only seventh of 11 in 2m2f Stratford handicap in July when favourite. Work to do returning in this company. Thereabouts in three handicap hurdles for previous trainer; much more needed at this level. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 4 race.
I WISH YOU put a string of seconds behind him when scoring over 2m1f at Carlisle in October and the second from that event has subsequently won impressively. With that in mind, a mark of 117 may underestimate the four-year-old and he gets the vote ahead of Fasol, who caught the eye when fourth at Cheltenham last month and remains potentially well treated. Others to consider are Cavern Club and Authentic Legacy.
None of these can be ruled out but the vote goes to AUTHENTIC LEGACY who looks to start life in handicaps on a lenient mark and can now end a run of three second placings. James Owen's Cavern Club heads the list of dangers on the back of his excellent Cheltenham second, with Razzle Dazzle Boy, Fasol and I Wish You also in the mix.
Cavern Club was ahead of FASOL at Cheltenham but the latter can improve for that run after a break and has a weights turnaround.
Ths is the racecard key.
