Fair form both starts to date, third behind a couple of above-average ones in 13-runner Redcar novice (6f) 26 days ago, headed halfway but keeping on. Entitled to be thereabouts. In the frame in Hamilton maiden/Redcar novice; may do better still so can't be discounted. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
4th (11) (7/1 -17%) Lunar Force |
7/1(-17%) | (11) Lunar Force 7/1, Been kept busy in recent weeks and ran best race yet when close-up third in maiden at Beverley (5f) on penultimate start. Not disgraced when fourth of 7 in maiden at Ayr (6f, good) 16 days ago and her experience will count for a good deal here. Has made the frame on all her five runs, fourth at Ayr latest; holds solid form claims. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
5th (5) (18/1 -80%) Keats House |
18/1(-80%) | (5) Keats House 18/1, Foaled April 23. €70,000 2-y-o, Earthlight colt. 11/1, shaped better than bare result when ninth of 18 in a York novice (7f) on debut 31 days ago, moving sweetly for a long way before weakening. Looks the type to do better. Prominent to 1f out when ninth at York on his debut; Earthlight colt can build on it here. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
6th (4) (40/1 -60%) Invincible Love |
40/1(-60%) | (4) Invincible Love 40/1, Foaled February 19. Territories colt. 14/1, green under pressure when eighth of 10 in novice at Pontefract (6f, good) on debut 38 days ago. |||||||||||||||||||||||||||
7th (2) (25/1 -108%) Galway Sands |
25/1(-108%) | (2) Galway Sands 25/1, Foaled March 25. €27,000 foal, €25,000 yearling, Sands of Mali colt. Half-brother to 2 winners, including 7f winner Major Cornwallis. |||||||||||||||||||||||||||
8th (1) (14/1 -100%) Calibos |
14/1(-100%) | (1) Calibos 14/1, Foaled April 13. 20,000 gns foal, 35,000 gns yearling. Twilight Son colt. |||||||||||||||||||||||||||
9th (10) (8/1 +43%) Dubai Magic |
8/1(+43%) | (10) Dubai Magic 8/1, Twice-raced filly. Showed a bit more than on debut when sixth of 13 in maiden at Windsor (6f, good to firm, 22/1) 28 days ago, fading final 1f. Likely she can do better, particularly when tackling nurseries. Encouraging sixth in Windsor maiden latest; can progress further and has possibilities. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
10th (7) (80/1 -60%) Watchmaker |
80/1(-60%) | (7) Watchmaker 80/1, Twice-raced colt. Twelfth of 13 in novice at Windsor (6f, good to firm, 22/1) 14 days ago, always behind. Bred more for stamina than speed and longer trips in due course promise to be more his bag. Beat only one in Windsor novice two weeks ago; lots more is needed from this son of Masar. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 4 race.
HUSCAL performed with plenty of credit when finishing sixth in a warm Goodwood maiden last month and, with the promise of improvement to come, he gets the vote to land the spoils at the second time of asking. Cape Sovereign chased homed two potentially useful types when third over 6f at Redcar last month and he can give the selection most to think about. Calibos appears to be the pick of the Richard Fahey-trained duo and he is respected most out of the remainder on his debut.
HUSCAL shaped best of the newcomers when finishing midfield in a Goodwood maiden (6f) 4 weeks ago and, with progress anticipated, Charlie Hills's colt is fancied to build on that and come out on top. Cape Sovereign may emerge as the chief threat, with newcomer Calibos and Keats House ,who shaped encouragingly on debut at York, others to keep an eye on.
Charlie Hills' Saxon Warrior colt HUSCAL shaped well on his debut when sixth at Goodwood and with that form franked he gets the nod here

1st (3) (5/4 +55%) Sir Edward Lear |
5/4(+55%) | (3) Sir Edward Lear 5/4, Mukhadram gelding. Half-brother to useful 9.2f-11f winner Percy Shelley. Dam 1m winner who stayed 1¼m. Makes appeal on paper and he merits respect in a race lacking depth on debut. Mukhadram gelding is in good hands so this newcomer merits serious consideration. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
2nd (2) (4/1 +20%) Thats My Boy Luke |
4/1(+20%) | (2) Thats My Boy Luke 4/1, Ulysses gelding. Similar form both starts to date, plugging on for fourth in 7-runner maiden at Hamilton (9f) 2 weeks ago. Handicaps promise to suit better moving forward. Fourth of seven in 1m1f Hamilton maiden 13 days ago; lots more is required. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
3rd (4) (9/2 -519%) Slaney Swagger |
9/2(-519%) | (4) Slaney Swagger 9/2, Fairly useful maiden in Ireland for Jim Bolger. Gelded/off 8 weeks, ran below best on debut for new yard when third of 7 in maiden at Hamilton (9.2f, good) 13 days ago. Cheekpieces/tongue tie go on and he's likely worth another chance. Fair ex-Irish maiden; below-par third at Hamilton on yard debut but leading form claims. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
4th (1) (16/1 +0%) North Summit |
16/1(+0%) | (1) North Summit 16/1, Sioux Nation colt who is a mix on breeding and probably one for later on judged on his seventh of 9 in maiden at Chelmsford City (1m) on debut 11 days ago, merely passing beaten rivals. Up in trip. Seventh of nine in 1m maiden at Chelmsford on his debut; needs to take a big step forward. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
5th (5) (40/1 -150%) Elvington |
40/1(-150%) | (5) Elvington 40/1, €10,000 yearling, Time Test filly. Dam runner-up in bumper sole start. Probably best watched on debut unless market vibes proved particularly positive. Time Test filly; considered debutante but the market can guide on her first run. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 5 race.
This looks a good opportunity for SLANEY SWAGGER to put his experience to good use and gain a breakthrough victory. The son of Profitable made a pleasing start to life with Alice Haynes when finishing third over 1m1f at Hamilton earlier this month and, with the likelihood of more to come in first-time cheekpieces, he looks the one to side with. North Summit didn't cut much ice when finishing down the field over a mile at Chelmsford on his debut recently, but he merits a second look with improvement expected now stepped up in trip. Sir Edward Lear looks the pick of the newcomers and he completes the shortlist.
SLANEY SWAGGER was below the pick of the form he showed in Ireland when third in a maiden at Hamilton (9.2f) 2 weeks ago but that run ought to have blown the cobwebs away and he's selected to come out on top. This isn't a strong race of its type, and newcomer Sir Edward Lear may emerge as the chief threat before the benefit of market clues.
Preference here is for SIR EDWARD LEAR who appeals on paper and is taken to make a winning start for the excellent James Owen team

1st (5) (5/2 +17%) Soldier's Heart |
5/2(+17%) | (5) Soldier's Heart 5/2, 2 wins from 4 runs this year, latest in in authoritative fashion in 6-runner novice (evens) at this C&D (good to firm) 9 days ago by 3¾ lengths from Line of Force. Shade disappointing in Group 3 company at Goodwood but shortlisted at this level. Resumed progress with ready C&D novice win latest; very much one to be interested in. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
2nd (1) (12/1 -9%) Benevento |
12/1(-9%) | (1) Benevento 12/1, 4/1, knew job very well when won 6-runner maiden at Yarmouth (5.2f, good to soft) on debut back in May. Open to improvement on first run for yard after leaving Dominic Ffrench Davis and falls into the 'could be anything' category. Cosily landed Yarmouth maiden for Dominic Ffrench Davis 114 days ago; no forlorn hope. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
3rd (3) (4/1 +33%) Mearall |
4/1(+33%) | (3) Mearall 4/1, Cotai Glory colt who was well backed and overcame inexperience to make a winning debut in comfortable fashion in 7-runner novice at this C&D (good to firm) 15 days ago. Hiked up in class but he's sure to progress and win more races. Looked a good prospect when landing C&D novice on his debut; needs considering. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
4th (2) (9/1 +50%) Line Of Force |
9/1(+50%) | (2) Line Of Force 9/1, C&D winner. 2 wins from 4 runs this year. Creditable 3¾ lengths second of 6 to Soldier's Heart in novice at this C&D (good to firm, 5/2) 9 days ago. Likely to find at least him too strong. C&D winner and posted a good second in another C&D novice nine days ago; possibilities. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
5th (6) (18/1 +0%) Spirit Of Leros |
18/1(+0%) | (6) Spirit Of Leros 18/1, Left Ascot debut behind when readily winning a 6f Lingfield novice in June. No impact in listed company at Newbury the following month but quickly back on the up when making a winning handicap debut in first-time cheekpieces at latter course 10 days ago. Worth another chance. Back to winning ways in Newbury nursery ten days ago; up in grade but not ruled out. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
6th (7) (7/1 -17%) Preanka |
7/1(-17%) | (7) Preanka 7/1, Looked potentially useful when winning 13-runner maiden at Windsor (6f, good to firm, 22/1) on debut 4 weeks ago, settling matters in quite taking fashion. Gets 5 lb from her male rivals and should progress. Impressive debut winner of maiden at Windsor; open to progress but this is no easy task. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
7th (4) (7/2 -155%) Shadow Army |
7/2(-155%) | (4) Shadow Army 7/2, Won at York on debut and improved when second in Prix Robert Papin at Chantilly last month. By no means disgraced pitched into Group 1 company when 5 lengths fourth of 5 to Babouche in Phoenix Stakes at the Curragh (6f, good to firm) recently and more severe headgear is enlisted. Big chance. In the frame in Prix Robert Papin and Phoenix Stakes on last two runs; good form claims. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 1 race.
Shadow Army was last seen finishing down the field in the Group 1 Phoenix Stakes at the Curragh earlier this month, and he must be of interest with his sights lowered here. That said, preference is for the progressive SOLDIER'S HEART. The son of Havana Grey posted a low-key effort in the Group 3 Molecomb Stakes over 5f at Goodwood on his penultimate start, but he bounced back when scoring comfortably over C&D recently and he gets the vote to land the spoils in what should be an informative affair. Benevento and Preanka both impressed when winning on debut and are also noteworthy.
A trappy sprint in which the vote goes to SHADOW ARMY, who was far from disgraced pitched into Group 1 company when fourth at the Curragh just over a fortnight ago so with more severe headgear reached for, Richard Fahey's colt can double his tally back in this grade (sent off favourite in Windsor Castle) at the expense of Soldier's Heart, who bolted up over C&D last time. Spirit of Leros opened his account at Newbury recently and rounds off the shortlist.
The Crisfords have an excellent record in this Listed event and their progressive C&D scorer SOLDIER'S HEART (nap) looks the way to go.

1st (6) (7/2 +53%) Watcha Matey |
7/2(+53%) | (6) Watcha Matey 7/2, Won handicaps on first 2 starts this season and not disgraced in ultra-competitive heats at Royal Ascot and the Newmarket July meeting. Not so good at Goodwood (9.9f, good to firm) 25 days ago but this is easier at least. Won his first two starts after reappearing, but held since; 2lb drop not enough to tempt. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
2nd (9) (14/1 +0%) Barley |
14/1(+0%) | (9) Barley 14/1, Ended a long losing sequence at Carlisle in June and in good order since, seventh of 13 in handicap at Windsor (8.1f, good to firm) 11 days ago. More needed. 8lb above his winning mark and behind Love De Vega last time. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
3rd (8) (3/1 -33%) Debora's Dream |
3/1(-33%) | (8) Debora's Dream 3/1, Improving now, following up Nottingham success in 6-runner handicap at Sandown (8f, good to firm, 10/11) 26 days ago. Respected in hat-trick bid. Bids for a hat-trick off 3lb higher; has a good record under Aidan Keeley; respected. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
4th (7) (7/1 +0%) On The River |
7/1(+0%) | (7) On The River 7/1, C&D winner in July, beating Garden Oasis. 7/2, last of 8 in handicap at this C&D (good to firm) 9 days ago, stumbled under 3f out and rider lost iron for several strides. More on his plate up in class. C&D winner and shortlisted provided the ground doesn't dry out too much. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
4th (2) (17/2 -21%) Padishakh |
17/2(-21%) | (2) Padishakh 17/2, Useful in France. Tongue strap on for 1st time, seventh of 10 in handicap (33/1) at Thirsk (8f, good) 23 days ago, running most encouraging race in Britain, carried head bit awkwardly from 2f out but not unduly punished as he failed to get on terms. Interesting down another 3 lb. Has shown nothing in four starts in this country; hard to warm to. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
6th (10) (12/1 -85%) Garden Oasis |
12/1(-85%) | (10) Garden Oasis 12/1, 6-time C&D winner, latest in July. Another cracking run here when second of 8 in C&D handicap (good to firm, 13/2) 9 days ago. Cheekpieces back on. Won this in 2021 but this looks a bit beyond his pay grade nowadays. 3lb wrong, but his consistency and love for this venue mean he can't be ruled out. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
7th (1) (14/1 -75%) Major Partnership |
14/1(-75%) | (1) Major Partnership 14/1, Won at Nottingham last season. Creditable ½-length fourth of 15 to Vafortino in listed race (12/1) at Meydan (7f, good) when last seen. Off 8 months. Has won fresh and trainer (good record here) enjoying a fine campaign. Wouldn't dismiss on return. Returns from another eight-month absence; others look more solid. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
8th (3) (7/1 -8%) Love De Vega |
7/1(-8%) | (3) Love De Vega 7/1, Bagged his third win of 2024 at Pontefract in July. Good second of 13 in handicap at Windsor (8.1f, good to firm, 33/1) 11 days ago. Up another 3 lb. Three-time winner this year and runner-up at Windsor last time; up 3lb but shortlisted. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
9th (5) (22/1 -57%) Pisanello |
22/1(-57%) | (5) Pisanello 22/1, Latest win at York in June. 22/1, tenth of 11 in handicap at Goodwood (9f, good to firm) 23 days ago. This is easier. Poorly drawn last time but was in good form before that; may prefer a stiffer 1m than this. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
10th (4) (11/1 +21%) Spirit Catcher |
11/1(+21%) | (4) Spirit Catcher 11/1, C&D winner last summer. Below form in 2 runs for new yard this year, seventh of 10 in handicap at Ascot (8f, good to firm, 28/1) 16 days ago. Return to this track may help. Quiet in both starts this year but won easily over C&D a year ago. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 2 race.
The progressive Debora's Dream made most of the running to land a double last month, but may he well be taken on for the lead by Windsor runner-up Love De Vega today, and that could set the race up nicely for MAJOR PARTNERSHIP. Saeed bin Suroor's veteran is having his first start of the year, though has gone well fresh on more than on occasion in the past, and is only 3lb higher than when successful in this grade at Nottingham last summer.
A useful handicap that can go to PADISHAKH, well treated on his best French form and who might be set for a full revival after showing more at Thirsk fitted with a tongue tie. Hat-trick seeking 3-y-o Debora's Dream is a big player, while the returning Major Partnership can also go well.
This can go to DEBORA'S DREAM who looks a most progressive 3yo and is taken to complete a hat-trick.

1st (5) (9/2 +36%) High Opinion |
9/2(+36%) | (5) High Opinion 9/2, Latest win at Catterick (5f) in June. Made the frame both starts since, staying on fourth of 12 in handicap at Doncaster (5f) 37 days ago. Eased 1 lb ahead of this and he's another in with a shout. Two Class 6 wins in June; solid runs in defeat twice since; career best required to win. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
2nd (2) (14/1 -180%) Our Absent Friends |
14/1(-180%) | (2) Our Absent Friends 14/1, Dual winner last season who has gone agonisingly close on 2 of last 3 starts, no extra only late on when neck second of 6 in handicap at Musselburgh (5f, good to firm, 13/2) 17 days ago. Cheekpieces on 1st time and he needs considering. Runner-up in his last two starts over 5f, including here; respected. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
3rd (1) (15/8 +38%) Strong Johnson |
15/8(+38%) | (1) Strong Johnson 15/8, C&D winner who arrives here in form, creditable second of 5 in handicap (6/4) at Hamilton (5f, good) 13 days ago. Operating 10 lb below last winning mark and he's very much one to bear in mind. Yet to win this year but he retains ability, ran well latest & is a well-drawn C&D winner. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
4th (10) (11/1 +8%) Brian The Snail |
11/1(+8%) | (10) Brian The Snail 11/1, Veteran C&D winner who opened his account for the campaign at Thirsk (5f) in July. Faced a stiff task at Wolverhampton next time but not at best when fifth of 9 in handicap at Bath (5.7f) 9 days ago. Eased 1 lb subsequently though and he's no forlorn hope. This is much stronger than the Thirsk handicap he won last month; others appeal more. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
5th (9) (9/1 +10%) Leodis Dream |
9/1(+10%) | (9) Leodis Dream 9/1, C&D winner. Latest win at Southwell in April. Respectable sixth of 10 in handicap (11/1) at Pontefract (5f, good) 19 days ago. Bright start to the season but he's gone cold since; dangerous mark as a result. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
6th (6) (11/1 -47%) Keldeo |
11/1(-47%) | (6) Keldeo 11/1, Doubled her tally at Catterick (5f) in May. Found only an improver too strong when second of 7 in handicap at Thirsk (6f, good to firm, 4/1) 31 days ago, so she could be thereabouts with cheekpieces added. Running well this summer but she will need the new cheekpieces to prompt improvement. |

7th (11) (12/1 +52%) Hoof It Hoof It |
12/1(+52%) | (11) Hoof It Hoof It 12/1, Course winner. Ninth of 12 in handicap at Catterick (6f, firm, 22/1) 7 days ago, weakening final 1f. Needs to bounce back. Course winner; good run over C&D three weeks ago but less good last time. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
8th (3) (11/1 -38%) Ingleby Archie |
11/1(-38%) | (3) Ingleby Archie 11/1, Back-to-back winner of 5f handicaps at Redcar/Thirsk but seemed to find a 4 lb higher mark anchoring him in hat-trick bid when fifth of 9 in handicap (4/1) at Doncaster (5f, good to firm) 23 days ago. Failed in hat-trick bid last time but that race set up for the closers; big run likely. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
9th (8) (80/1 -220%) Restless Prince |
80/1(-220%) | (8) Restless Prince 80/1, Winner at Catterick in April. 28/1, eighth of 9 in handicap at Beverley (5f, good to firm) 12 days ago, always behind. Others more persuasive. Not kicked on from his soft-ground maiden win in April; others look safer. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
10th (7) (13/2 -30%) Woobay |
13/2(-30%) | (7) Woobay 13/2, Back on scoreboard over C&D last month and posted creditable fourth of 18 in handicap at York (5f, good to firm) next time. Slow start didn't help when seventh of 8 in handicap back over C&D 21 days ago. Type to bounce back. C&D win last month; fluffed the start when a hot fav here latest; can bounce back quickly. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 5 race.
STRONG JOHNSON won twice at this time last year, including a victory over this course a distance. Paul Midgley's sprinter races off a 7lb lower mark today and recent placed efforts suggest a return to winning ways is imminent. He looks to have most to fear from recent Musselburgh runner-up Our Absent Friends, given both Ingleby Archie and High Opinion have looked in the grip of the handicapper since landing doubles during the summer.
STRONG JOHNSON's losing run is mounting up but he's lurking on a handy mark as a result and following solid placed efforts on each of his last 2 starts, he could be worth siding with from a handy draw. Woobay, if shrugging off a lesser effort, and 3-y-o Scoops Ahoy also command a second look, as does Our Absent Friends, who has gone close on 2 of his last 3 starts.
Woobay and Our Absent Friends are high on the list but STRONG JOHNSON is eased slightly in grade and can come out on top.

The chart reads from right to left to today's class 6 race.
Stepping back up in trip looks like a good move for KEEN INTEREST, having been outpaced late on when not beaten far over 1m at Yarmouth last week following a 1m3f success at Yarmouth. Alice Haynes' charge seems well treated by the conditions of this contest, and it may be that Laudable gives him the most to think about following a taking success at Ayr when having his first go at this distance. Peripeteia and Tiberio Force are likely to be thereabouts as well.
PERIPETEIA might prove the answer at a venue where she's tasted success before. Keen Interest is a 3-y-o who arrives in form and is feared most ahead of Going Underground and Laudable.
Philip Kirby's C&D scorer PERIPETEIA is taken to resume winning ways on the back of his very good Catterick third last time out

The chart reads from right to left to today's class 6 race.
A determined winner over further at Yarmouth last month in a classified stakes contest that has worked out well since, SHIELD OF HONOUR looks more than capable of following up in this amateur jockeys' contest from a plum inside draw. Masque Of Anarchy almost ended a long losing streak when narrowly denied at Beverley last time out and he is entitled to be thereabouts again. Others to note include Chicago al, Edwina Sheeran and Irv.
MASQUE OF ANARCHY can gain compensation for his Beverley near miss and win this race for the second time in the last 3 years. Irv, Chicago Gal and Shield of Honour head the dangers.
Craig Lidster's MASQUE OF ANARCHY looks primed for a bold showing on the back of his good Beverley second last time out so gets the nod
Ths is the racecard key.
