Mark Of Gold |
(1) (4/7 +29%)4/7(+29%) | (1) Mark Of Gold 4/7, Prolific winning hurdler who, despite not being an obvious chaser on looks or pedigree, made the perfect start in this sphere in 4-runner Noel Novices' Chase at Ascot (18.8f) just over 2 weeks ago, fortunate after runner-up made a mess of the last. Giving stacks of weight away but can progress. Excellent record here over hurdles and won a Grade 2 on recent chase debut; leading claims. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Lord Of Thunder |
(2) (5/2 -43%)5/2(-43%) | (2) Lord Of Thunder 5/2, On the up over hurdles last season, scoring twice in novice company at Wincanton. Looks the part for chasing and was making a promising start in this sphere when coming down 2 out at Cheltenham on return. Respectable fourth at Exeter since and remains one to view positively. Tongue tie applied. Merely 4th at Exeter on second chase start but respected in view of his previous promise. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Classic Anthem |
(3) (6/1 +14%)6/1(+14%) | (3) Classic Anthem 6/1, Expensive recruit from Irish points who scored over hurdles at Sandown in December 2023. Promising start over fences back from 6 months off when second of 4 at same course in November but not so good at Newbury (16.4f, good to soft) later that month. Bounce back needed from 6 lb out of weights. Went close on chase debut but well beaten since and 6lb out of the handicap today. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 3 race.
MARK OF GOLD stuck to his task and capitalised on his rival's last-fence blunder when making a winning chase bow in a Grade 2 at Ascot 16 days ago. The eight-year-old makes grand appeal now going handicapping over fences and this looks a suitable opportunity for him to complete a brace. The biggest threat may emerge from Lord Of Thunder, who shaped well on his first completed start over fences when finishing fourth at Exeter last month. Classic Anthem is noted too.
Joe Tizzard and Brendan Powell combined to take this last year, and they can repeat the trick with LORD OF THUNDER, who ran respectably at Exeter last month and remains a chaser to view positively with a first-time tongue tie applied. Mark of Gold, who took advantage of Personal Ambition's last-fence blunder to make a winning start over fences at Ascot just over a fortnight ago, rates as the obvious danger.
Topweight MARK OF GOLD made a very good start to his chasing career at Ascot last month and can make it 2-2 over fences.

Morning Air |
(7) (2/1 +20%)2/1(+20%) | (7) Morning Air 2/1, Fairly useful Flat winner in the mud in France and made a successful hurdle debut at Leicester 35 days ago in the style of one who could have plenty more to offer. Sure to leave bare form behind. Fairly useful French Flat win; travelled well to score on hurdle/stable debut at Leicester. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Risk It All |
(6) (3/1 -33%)3/1(-33%) | (6) Risk It All 3/1, Easy 6-length winner of 2m minor event at Nort-sur-Erdre only outing on Flat for Elisabeth Allaire. Very strong in the betting and shaped well on hurdles debut at Kempton last week, taking keen hold but sticking to his task. More to come. French 2m Flat winner who was a promising third on recent hurdle debut; key player. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Narragansett |
(5) (7/2 +0%)7/2(+0%) | (5) Narragansett 7/2, Fairly useful (and lightly-raced) winner on the Flat and showed plenty to work on sent hurdling when runner-up at Market Rasen 3 weeks ago, pulling long way clear of the rest. Should improve. Clear second on last month's hurdle debut at Market Rasen and firmly in calculations. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Dr Waksman |
(3) (7/1 +65%)7/1(+65%) | (3) Dr Waksman 7/1, Fair form in maidens on Flat (stays 10.5f), showed more than previously when made frame last time. Has left Andrew Oliver and now goes hurdling for successful NH yard. 0-5 on the Flat in Ireland but fair form and he's not discounted on hurdle/stable debut. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Vorderman |
(1) (8/1 +68%)8/1(+68%) | (1) Vorderman 8/1, Limited impact in a brace of bumpers but caused an upset upped to 17.7f switched to hurdling at Fontwell a month ago. Far from an obvious follow-up contender under a penalty. Won on hurdle debut at Fontwell but improvement is needed to defy penalty in this company. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Crown Of India |
(2) (10/1 +50%)10/1(+50%) | (2) Crown Of India 10/1, Fairly useful maiden on Flat (stays 1¾m), well beaten in handicap last time. Has left Ed Walker ahead of this hurdles debut with a hood kept on. 0-8 on the Flat for Ralph Beckett but fairly useful form; not ruled out on hurdle debut. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 3 race.
Morning Air justified favouritism when making a winning hurdles/UK debut at Leicester last month and another bold bid looks likely. However, the form of that race could have worked out better and Venetia Williams' filly will need to improve to defy a 6lb penalty. With that in mind, it could be worth chancing RISK IT ALL to build on last week's third-placed timber bow at Kempton, where he showed clear signs of inexperience. Narragansett is also noted.
Despite failing to land a gamble on last week's hurdles debut, RISK IT ALL showed plenty to work on at Kempton, ultimately finishing third, and with progress on the cards, he could be the answer. Morning Air was impressive when winning at Leicester and is sure to leave the bare form of that trailing in her wake.
Preference is for French Flat winner RISK IT ALL, who can build on his promising third at Kempton nine days ago.

The Bluesman |
(4) (5/2 +0%)5/2(+0%) | (4) The Bluesman 5/2, Chepstow bumper winner on soft in April and returned from wind surgery to make a successful start to his hurdle career back at Chepstow (19.5f, good) in November. Can be expected to improve. Bumper winner who scored on his hurdle debut and could play another leading role. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Jax Junior |
(3) (11/4 +8%)11/4(+8%) | (3) Jax Junior 11/4, Placed in bumpers last spring. Had wind surgery after making a disappointing start to his hurdle career at Uttoxeter in November and totally different proposition at Doncaster 6 weeks later, winning by 10 lengths. There should be more to come. Made all by 10l at Doncaster; the strength of the form is questionable but he's respected. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
As The Fella Says |
(5) (3/1 -33%)3/1(-33%) | (5) As The Fella Says 3/1, £60,000 after winning an Irish point. Made a promising start to his hurdle career for top new stable when second of 11 over 21f at Warwick (soft) last month. Leading claims with improvement likely. Point winner who was second on hurdle debut and is in excellent hands to progress. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Game Colours |
(8) (6/1 +40%)6/1(+40%) | (8) Game Colours 6/1, Had wind surgery after pulling up on debut and placed on all 3 starts since, on the latest going down by only a head in mares' novice at Wincanton (21.5f, heavy) 31 days ago. Engaged 12.23 Wincanton Saturday. Knocking on the door after three successive placed efforts; could again be thereabouts. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Illegal D'ainay |
(2) (14/1 -17%)14/1(-17%) | (2) Illegal D'ainay 14/1, Opened his hurdle account in 2m course maiden in May. Has bettered that form when placed twice under a penalty in recent months but others in this line-up look more progressive. Won here in May; creditable efforts in defeat the next twice and this may be more winnable. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Kissman |
(1) (20/1 +0%)20/1(+0%) | (1) Kissman 20/1, Fairly useful hurdle winner in France but not at that level in 2 handicap starts for new connections. Still early days with this yard but others look stronger here. French winner but down the field in handicaps on both British outings. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Elysian Knight |
(6) (20/1 +0%)20/1(+0%) | (6) Elysian Knight 20/1, Placed twice in bumpers and ran to a fair level again when 11 lengths fourth on C&D hurdle debut 5 weeks ago. Open to progress. Placed in bumpers and fourth on hurdle debut over C&D in a race that's working out well. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Minella Kaiser |
(7) (25/1 +50%)25/1(+50%) | (7) Minella Kaiser 25/1, Placed on first of 2 starts in Irish points but remote fourth on C&D hurdle debut 3 weeks ago. More one for the longer term on that evidence. Third on debut in a point but well beaten the next twice, on hurdle debut most recently. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 3 race.
A wind procedure worked the oracle for last month's Doncaster scorer JAX JUNIOR. Lucy Wadham's gelding impressed with how quickly he put his rivals to bed and a 6lb penalty may not be enough to prevent him from following up. As The Fella Says made a respectable hurdles bow when runner-up at Warwick 24 days ago and the son of Soldier Of Fortune can put up the most resistance to the selection, ahead of the hat-trick seeking The Bluesman.
Nicky Henderson's AS THE FELLA SAYS was an encouraging second on last month's Warwick hurdle debut and can make the most of the 7 lb he receives from previous winners The Bluesman and Jax Junior.
Bumper winner THE BLUESMAN won on his hurdle debut at Chepstow in November and could have plenty more to offer for Paul Nicholls.

Transmission |
(3) (7/2 -5%)7/2(-5%) | (3) Transmission 7/2, Did well in staying handicap hurdles, winning this race last year (2-2 over C&D) thanks to a remarkable sit from jockey. Progressing nicely over fences (second at Cheltenham last month) but connections understandably tempted by decent pot here and is very much respected on his return to hurdles. In rude health over fences at Cheltenham towards end of last year & 2-2 over hurdles here. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Monmiral |
(1) (5/1 +0%)5/1(+0%) | (1) Monmiral 5/1, Addition of blinkers reignited his spark as he landed Pertemps Final at the Cheltenham Festival (3m, soft) in March. Needed comeback run and much improved with headgear back on when chasing home Strong Leader in a Grade 2 at Newbury (24.2f) 37 days ago. Leading contender back in a handicap. Last season's Pertemps winner who was a Grade 2 runner-up last time; solid contender. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Kilbarry Hill |
(9) (11/2 +8%)11/2(+8%) | (9) Kilbarry Hill 11/2, Two wins in November, got off the mark in 6-runner novice hurdle at Hereford (19.7f) before claiming a walk over. Another step forward when scoring on handicap debut at Uttoxeter (23.3f, soft) headed and rallied to lead late on. 1 lb out of handicap but lightly-raced sort represents red-hot stable. Won on last month's handicap debut at Uttoxeter and today's extra yardage could be a plus. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Up For Parol |
(6) (15/2 +17%)15/2(+17%) | (6) Up For Parol 15/2, Fourteen runs since last win but decent third at Chepstow (23.6f, good) on final outing last term. Encouraging return from 8-months off when second of 9 (clear of third) in a handicap at Sandown (23.4f, heavy) 29 days ago, not given hard time once chance had gone. Entitled to build on that run. 9yo who has been beaten on his last 14 starts but placed on his last 3; each-way claims. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Dans Le Vent |
(4) (8/1 +0%)8/1(+0%) | (4) Dans Le Vent 8/1, Promising comeback this term before below-par run at Haydock in November. Much better when third of 8 in handicap hurdle at Chepstow (23.6f, good to soft, 16/1) 9 days ago, relishing the step up in trip. Up 2 lb for that effort but still 12 lb below his last winning mark, albeit he is a veteran now. Close third at Chepstow recently and he could be bang there once more. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Lemoncello |
(8) (10/1 +0%)10/1(+0%) | (8) Lemoncello 10/1, Useful recruit from France but laboured effort at Bangor on British debut, but back on track on second start when fourth at Doncaster (16.5f). Flattered by second at Hereford (19.7f) last month but did rally late on, so tries staying trip today. Bit to find and could be one for fences down the line. Stayed on over 2m4f a fortnight ago & could benefit from the step up in trip; interesting. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Tommie Beau |
(2) (12/1 +0%)12/1(+0%) | (2) Tommie Beau 12/1, Landed 3 of his first 4 starts at Cartmel this term and followed up with some solid efforts. Took the wrong course when contesting Cross Country at Cheltenham, pulling up, before again failing to complete at Sandown (pulled-up, 28.7f, soft) 29 days ago. Back over hurdles today but has won over C&D. Pulled up at Sandown last month but won three times last year and has a good record here. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 2 race.
Pertemps Final winner Monmiral improved from his return effort in a qualifier for the same series at Newbury to finish runner-up in the Long Distance Hurdle at the same venue. The eight-year-old warrants plenty of respect but he does face a stiff task against some interesting opponents with CLOUD DANCER getting the nod. The step up to 3m at Doncaster last time saw him take a big step forward and a 6lb rise doesn't appear overly harsh. Transmission bids to repeat his remarkable success in this event from 12 months ago.
A winner at last year's Cheltenham Festival and second in a Grade 2 already this season, MONMIRAL could have too much class for these back in handicap company. With rain forecast the conditions are likely to be testing and he's shown he can cope with plenty of juice in the ground, as has Transmission who landed this race when it was soft underfoot last year. Cloud Dancer is unexposed over staying trips and he can get in the money.
The ex-French 6yo LEMONCELLO displayed staying potential when keeping on well over 2m4f at Hereford recently and gets the nod.

Minella Blueway |
(7) (3/1 +25%)3/1(+25%) | (7) Minella Blueway 3/1, Winning Irish pointer/hurdler who has improved with each of his three runs in this sphere, staying-on second of 5 in 3m Windsor handicap chase 21 days ago. Interesting now his stamina is drawn out more. Went close at Windsor on third chase start and could be suited by this marathon trip. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Unanswered Prayers |
(2) (10/3 +5%)10/3(+5%) | (2) Unanswered Prayers 10/3, Resumed winning ways at Fontwell in November and backed it up with a solid third of 10 in handicap chase at Sandown (28.7f, soft) 29 days ago. Ought to be thereabouts off the same mark. Won the Southern National before solid third in the London National; strong claims. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Dom Of Mary |
(4) (9/2 +0%)9/2(+0%) | (4) Dom Of Mary 9/2, Looked rusty after 8 months off/wind op when pulled up in handicap chase at Ascot (29.4f, good to soft) 43 days ago. Took this impressively 12 months ago so no surprise to see him bounce back with cheekpieces refitted. Pulled up on reappearance but cheekpieces return and he won this by 10l last year. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Animal |
(6) (13/2 +7%)13/2(+7%) | (6) Animal 13/2, Scored at Sandown last December but ended last season below par, seventh of 9 in handicap chase at Ffos Las (25.3f) final run. Has gone well fresh though so possibilities on seasonal return. Placed in two Nationals last season; on a handy mark and could go well on reappearance. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
East Street |
(5) (8/1 +0%)8/1(+0%) | (5) East Street 8/1, Visored and in fine form for current yard when winning handicap chases at Wetherby/Leicester and Haydock handicap hurdle this winter. Pulled up back at Haydock last time but he 's the sort to bounce back with headgear changed. Made it 3-3 in the visor when winning last month, but pulled up subsequently. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Broken Halo |
(1) (10/1 +0%)10/1(+0%) | (1) Broken Halo 10/1, Fairly useful chaser who bagged 3½m handicap at Taunton in March. Pulled up on back of breathing surgery at Sandown (3m4f) on his recent return. Can take a step forward now. Pulled up on reappearance but may have needed it; won over 3m4f at Taunton last March. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Gold Clermont |
(8) (10/1 +9%)10/1(+9%) | (8) Gold Clermont 10/1, Course winner but pulled up in handicap chase at Fakenham (29.1f, good to soft) 14 days ago. Needs to get back on track. Stays well and is below her last winning mark, but arrives with plenty to prove. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Jerrash |
(3) (10/1 -11%)10/1(-11%) | (3) Jerrash 10/1, Dual winner around 2m4f in the summer and has continued in good nick over much longer trips, fourth of 7 in handicap chase at Newcastle (29.9f, good) 36 days ago. Can make his presence felt once more. Well beaten at Newcastle last time but went close in the Durham National previously. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 3 race.
UNANSWERED PRAYERS won the Southern National on his penultimate start before following that effort with a decent third in the London National. The handicapper left him alone for the latest of those efforts and an ease in grade may see the nine-year-old back to winning ways. Dom Of Mary returns to the scene of his finest hour having won this by 10 lengths 12 months ago. Others to note are Minella Blueway and Jerrash.
Evan Williams' progressive MINELLA BLUEWAY is the least exposed chaser in the field and gets the vote with this first try beyond 3m likely to yield further improvement. Last year's stylish victor Dom of Mary looks primed for another bold showing and is next on the list, although Animal, Unanswered Prayers, Broken Halo and East Street are all worthy of consideration too in a competitive Sussex National.
Last year's winner DOM OF MARY (nap) is back in the cheekpieces which he wore for that comfortable victory 12 months ago. He's the pick.

Theonlywayiswessex |
(2) (5/4 +62%)5/4(+62%) | (2) Theonlywayiswessex 5/4, Resumed winning ways in good style over C&D 5 weeks ago but 10 lb rise looks a slight overreaction. Bolted up over C&D last time and a 10lb rise may not prevent another big performance. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
I Shut That D'or |
(3) (15/8 +6%)15/8(+6%) | (3) I Shut That D'or 15/8, No denying he's been rejuvenated since being switched to front-running tactics, winning twice over C&D in recent months. Likely to make another bold bid. Two C&D wins from his last three starts and he could still be well treated. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Diplomatic Ash |
(5) (8/1 -60%)8/1(-60%) | (5) Diplomatic Ash 8/1, A fair maiden hurdler who has shown similar form over fences, though he hung left when third of 5 in handicap chase at Plumpton (19.8f, good to soft) 20 days ago. Headgear now applied. Encouraging signs over fences the last twice and he may benefit from the cheekpieces. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Alto Alto |
(1) (16/1 -60%)16/1(-60%) | (1) Alto Alto 16/1, Four-time winner here but hasn't returned in form and others are more appealing. Change of headgear. Plenty to prove regarding current form but he's a four-time winner at Plumpton. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 4 race.
I Shut That D'or has won over course and distance on two of his last three starts and beat Theonlywayiswessex on the first of those occasions. The latter has won here subsequently and there is little to choose between that pair on these revised terms, but SUN JOY is less exposed over fences. This six-year-old was having only his second start in a chase when runner-up at Sedgefield in November and a bold bid is expected from Ben Pauling's charge.
I SHUT THAT D'OR has won 2 of his last 3 starts (both over C&D) since switched to front-running tactics and he's sure to make another bold bid. Sun Joy left his chase bow behind when second at Sedgefield and is next best.
The lightly raced 6yo DIPLOMATIC ASH has shown promise the last twice and could be the type to benefit from the cheekpieces.

Snapius |
(5) (5/2 +38%)5/2(+38%) | (5) Snapius 5/2, Ex-Irish hurdles/Flat winner who has been right back on track on last two starts for his current yard. Second of 9 at Leicester (15.5f, heavy) before landing a 7-runner handicap hurdle at Lingfield (16f, good to soft) 18 days ago, despite being weak in market. Not ruled out for excellent trainer. Clear with the favourite when winning at Lingfield and he's a key player up 5lb. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Schmilsson |
(1) (3/1 +14%)3/1(+14%) | (1) Schmilsson 3/1, Fairly useful performer on Flat and he doubled his hurdles tally after 7 months off in handicap at Wetherby in October. Hadn't quite reached those heights on starts since but still in good heart, possibly not quite seeing out his race in soft conditions (fourth of 8) 29 days ago. Stable are flying. Won at Wetherby on his reappearance but needs to better his two subsequent efforts. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Bucephalus |
(2) (4/1 -20%)4/1(-20%) | (2) Bucephalus 4/1, Usually races prominently and positive tactics saw him come good in this sphere when taking a 2m Newbury handicap in March. Latest second of 14 (under today's conditional jockey) in a handicap hurdle at Chepstow (16f, good to soft) puts him bang in the mix here. Highly creditable second at Chepstow recently and a 2lb rise isn't harsh; leading claims. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Inferno Sacree |
(4) (8/1 -14%)8/1(-14%) | (4) Inferno Sacree 8/1, C&D winner generally makes the running. Enjoyed a fruitful spell landing 5 wins from 6 starts in first half of 2023. Largely struggled since but steps in the right direction on last two outings here, possibly not suited by extra distance when third of 11 here 34 days ago. Player back down in trip. Three-time course winner who is one to consider now back down in trip. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Goodwin Face |
(7) (10/1 +0%)10/1(+0%) | (7) Goodwin Face 10/1, Best effort to date over hurdles when runner-up over C&D in October, still displayed signs of greenness. Disappointing on handicap debut at Hereford (seventh of 15, 16.2f) 15 days ago. Didn't look the most straightforward of rides, but we know he goes well here, as does his trainer. Went close in C&D novice in October and perhaps unsuited by Hereford on handicap debut. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Aggagio |
(3) (10/1 -43%)10/1(-43%) | (3) Aggagio 10/1, Landed decent pot over hurdles at Haydock in March 2023, but runs in this sphere since have been well below that. However, there were signs of promise on his latest run (fifth of 8 at Lingfield 19.5f, soft) when not given hard time. On a handy mark now and market should reveal what's expected. Continues to drop down weights; step back in right direction last time but needs another. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 4 race.
BUCEPHALUS bounced back to form when finishing a respectable second at Chepstow last week. He could go close if able to back that up and is taken to edge an open affair. A winner at Lingfield last time, Snapius arrives in fine form and is likely to prove competitive once again, despite a 5lb rise, while Inferno Sacree is not out of it either returning to a shorter trip. Moab is the least exposed and is another to note.
A competitive 7-runner handicap. AGGAGIO could be the answer to this puzzle, having shaped better than his finishing position last time, so he's on a winnable mark if back on-song. Any market support for the selection would be significant. Recent runner-up Bucephalus and C&D winner Inferno Sacree both like to front run, and they can fill the placings and give Aggagio a nice lead into the race.
Bucephalus is tempting but this could go to SNAPIUS, who came clear with the favourite when winning at Lingfield last month.
Ths is the racecard key.

Horse racing is a popular and historic sport in the UK, with a tradition dating back centuries. It is a multi-billion pound industry that attracts millions of spectators each year and generates significant economic activity.
There are two main types of horse racing in the UK: flat racing and jump racing. Flat racing is run on a level course and is typically shorter in distance, while jump racing involves horses jumping over obstacles and is generally longer in distance. Both types of racing are popular with spectators and bettors, and they take place at various racetracks throughout the country.
The most famous horse racing event in the UK is the Grand National, which is held annually at Aintree Racecourse in Liverpool. It is a jump racing event that is known for its challenging course and has become a national institution in the UK. Other notable horse racing events in the UK include the Derby, held at Epsom Downs Racecourse in Surrey, and the Royal Ascot, held at Ascot Racecourse in Berkshire.
Horse racing in the UK is regulated by the British Horseracing Authority (BHA), which sets rules and standards for the industry. It is responsible for the welfare of racehorses and the safety of jockeys and trainers, as well as ensuring fair and transparent racing practices.
In addition to its economic and cultural importance, horse racing in the UK also plays a significant role in the breeding and training of thoroughbred horses. Many of the world's top thoroughbreds are bred and trained in the UK, and the industry plays a vital role in the preservation and promotion of the breed.
Overall, horse racing is an integral part of British culture and a major contributor to the country's economy. It is a thrilling and exciting sport that continues to attract a loyal following and generate significant interest from spectators and bettors around the world.
