1st (4) (8.5/1 +39%) Liberated Lad |
8.5/1(+39%) | (4) Liberated Lad 8.5/1, Seventh of 9 in handicap (28/1) at Leicester (11.8f, soft) 13 days ago. Yet to click for present yard but starting to come down the weights (currently 2 lb above last winning mark) and would have a change granted a revival. He's just 1-18 on turf (Flat) and comfortably beaten in four runs for this yard. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
2nd (3) (3/1 +50%) Barney's Angel |
3/1(+50%) | (3) Barney's Angel 3/1, 6/1, tenth of 11 in handicap at Beverley (9.9f, soft) 14 days ago. Knocking on the door prior to that, including when fourth of 9 over this C&D off 3 lb higher on penultimate start, and he's one for the shortlist. Tailed off at Beverley, reaffirming that rain-softened ground is not what he wants. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
3rd (1) (14/1 -155%) Starfighter |
14/1(-155%) | (1) Starfighter 14/1, Fifth of 8 in handicap at Wolverhampton (12.2f, 4/1) when last seen in March. Mixed bag on turf but he figures on a workable mark and won't mind the drop in trip, so there's cause for optimism. Off since March and record fresh isn't the best, while any rain would count against him. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
4th (8) (9/1 +10%) Mac Ailey |
9/1(+10%) | (8) Mac Ailey 9/1, Latest win at Ayr in July. Last of 12 in handicap (5/1) at Ayr (8f, good) 29 days ago. Back up in trip and cheekpieces refitted. Motarajel is presumably the stable first-string judged on rider arrangements. A recent Ayr winner over 1m2f on soft and could yet get similar conditions here. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
5th (2) (3.33/1 +39%) Hotspur Harry |
3.33/1(+39%) | (2) Hotspur Harry 3.33/1, C&D winner. 14/1, sixth of 9 in handicap at Newmarket (8f, good) 17 days ago, merely passing beaten rivals. Back up in trip and cheekpieces refitted, he could certainly have a say if he puts his best foot forward. Plenty of placed form but only 2-35 and last four runs weren't his best. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
6th (5) (4.5/1 -13%) Motarajel |
4.5/1(-13%) | (5) Motarajel 4.5/1, Fourteen runs since last win in 2022. 15/2, creditable fourth of 8 in handicap at Beverley (9.9f, soft) 22 days ago. Modest strike rate but now down to a career-low mark and shouldn't be far away. Hasn't been far away in any of his last four runs and conditions will be fine. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
7th (11) (25/1 +24%) Peroni |
25/1(+24%) | (11) Peroni 25/1, Blinkered for 1st time, eighth of 10 in minor event at Wolverhampton (12.2f, 12/1). Off 7 months ahead of this first start for last year's winning yard. Improvement needed. Not that competitive in six starts for Gay Kelleway, including handicaps from 1m to 1m4f. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
8th (12) (80/1 -100%) Nemorum |
80/1(-100%) | (12) Nemorum 80/1, Remains a maiden after 17 Flat runs. 22/1, ninth of 10 in handicap at Chepstow (7.1f, good to firm). Off 91 days and significantly up in trip here. Looks set for another struggle. A regressive maiden who's yet to achieve anything significant on turf. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
9th (13) (20/1 -43%) Pink Sky At Night |
20/1(-43%) | (13) Pink Sky At Night 20/1, 40/1, eleventh of 14 in handicap at Dundalk (7f), left poorly placed. Off 10 months and significantly up in trip on this first run for yard after leaving John C. Shearman. Some promise in Irish handicaps but unraced over this far and has been off since October. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
10th (6) (10/1 +75%) Kingson |
10/1(+75%) | (6) Kingson 10/1, Last of 9 in handicap at Hamilton (12.1f, good to firm, 25/1) 68 days ago. First run for yard after leaving Jake Thomas Coulson and cheekpieces on 1st time. Looks up against it. Lost his way after winning on debut for previous yard and recently changed hands cheaply. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
11th (10) (100/1 -52%) Elwing |
100/1(-52%) | (10) Elwing 100/1, Lightly-raced maiden. 66/1 and cheekpieces on for 1st time, ninth of 13 in handicap at Windsor (8.1f, good) 22 days ago. Back up in trip and it's easy enough to look elsewhere. Limited maiden who has finished well behind in handicaps over 1m4f and 1m. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
12th (7) (33/1 -83%) Nelson Bay |
33/1(-83%) | (7) Nelson Bay 33/1, Thrice-raced maiden. Sixth of 9 in maiden (80/1) at Pontefract (8f, good to soft) 16 days ago, slowly away. Back up in trip for this handicap debut and worth a second look in the betting. Mild improvement last time but doesn't look obviously well treated for handicap debut. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
13th (9) (12/1 -300%) Dark Gold |
12/1(-300%) | (9) Dark Gold 12/1, 15/2, last of 7 in handicap at Wolverhampton (14f) 29 days ago. So far failed to progress from 2 to 3 and for the switch to handicaps, as so many from this yard do. Hasn't progressed as expected since handicapping back from wind surgery. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 6 race.
A weak contest in which a tentative vote is given to STARFIGHTER, who could take advantage of a drop in distance following a fair fifth over 1m4f at Wolverhampton in March. He is now rated 2lb above his last winning mark, which came at this course in December, and he can get the better of Motarajel. Mac Ailey is another seeking to bounce back to form and he completes the shortlist.
None of these look especially solid but, save for his latest effort at Beverley, BARNEY'S ANGEL has proved to be consistent since venturing down the handicap route, making the frame all 5 starts prior to what was presumably a blip last time. The 4-y-o may well open his account at the tenth time of asking. Motarajel is an infrequent winner but is more likely than most to run his race and should be on the premises, while cases can also be made for Hotspur Harry and Starfighter.
Tim Easterby's MOTARAJEL doesn't find winning easy but he's consistent and looks a good bet to give his running.

1st (2) (7.5/1 -67%) Exponista |
7.5/1(-67%) | (2) Exponista 7.5/1, Showcasing filly. Sister to smart 6f winner Ehraz. Much better effort when second of 8 in maiden at Newcastle (5f, 10/1) on debut. Off 80 days since disappointing at Goodwood. Stuck well to task on 5f AW debut; faded over 6f on turf in May (good to firm). |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
2nd (3) (5/1 +33%) Glitterella |
5/1(+33%) | (3) Glitterella 5/1, Foaled January 20. €58,000 foal, Starspangledbanner filly. Dam unraced half-sister to useful 7f-1¼m winner Match Maker out of winner up to 1m (2-y-o 1m winner) I'm In Love. Sixth of 7 in minor event at Doncaster (6f, soft, 7/1) on debut 24 days ago. No impact on 6f debut (soft) but still signs of ability; may well achieve more this time. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
3rd (5) (6/1 -50%) Rose Branch |
6/1(-50%) | (5) Rose Branch 6/1, Foaled February 22. Kingman filly. Dam once-raced sister to smart winner up to 1½m Qualify out of useful 12.7f winner (should have stayed 2m) Perihelion. Makes plenty of appeal on paper. Likely to come into her own over further; market can guide for up-and-coming yard. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
4th (1) (0.73/1 +39%) Crystal Of Time |
0.73/1(+39%) | (1) Crystal Of Time 0.73/1, Foaled February 12. Dark Angel filly. Half-sister to 3 winners, including very smart winner up to 1½m Nations Pride and 7f winner Persian Empire. Dam 8.5f/9f winner. One to take seriously on debut. Classy pedigree; likely type for yard that's 31% with 2yos on turf this year. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
5th (4) (10/1 -82%) High Sport |
10/1(-82%) | (4) High Sport 10/1, Foaled May 19. 130,000 gns yearling, Ten Sovereigns filly. Closely related to 2-y-o 6f winner Yes Always and winner up to 1¼m Swift One. Dam 10.7f winner. Trainer’s newcomers command respect. Late foal; bred to be precocious and market can guide; yard 13% with 2yos on turf in 2023. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 5 race.
CRYSTAL OF TIME makes her racecourse debut and the half-sister to German Group 1 winner Nations Pride is fancied to make a winning start. Her dam was a Listed winner and Charlie Appleby's filly can get the better of fellow debutant Rose Branch. High Sport is another seeking to get off the mark at the first time of asking and she must be considered too.
This is likely to go to a newcomer, and Godolphin's CRYSTAL OF TIME stands out on pedigree. Rose Branch, a daughter of Kingman, and High Sport, who cost 6 figures as a yearling, can chase the selection home in that order.
High Sport is bred to go a bit but is a late foal and CRYSTAL OF TIME is taken to make a winning start.

1st (4) (1.1/1 -10%) King Lear |
1.1/1(-10%) | (4) King Lear 1.1/1, Bred in the purple and shaped promisingly amidst greenness when fourth in 11-runner novice at Newmarket (1m) on debut 25 days ago, keeping on well from rear. Will improve and has leading claims. Finished his race out well at Newmarket (1m) and should improve on that. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
2nd (6) (4.5/1 +25%) Ayyab |
4.5/1(+25%) | (6) Ayyab 4.5/1, Progressed again when third of 10 in minor event (12/1) at Newmarket (8f, good) 46 days ago. May do better still. Just over 1l away last time at Newmarket when hot on the heels of a subsequent winner. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
3rd (5) (2.5/1 +38%) Motriff |
2.5/1(+38%) | (5) Motriff 2.5/1, Sea The Stars gelding. Half-brother to useful 1m-1¼m winner Evident Beauty. Dam unraced half-sister to high-class winner up to 1½m The Fugue. Shaped promisingly when fourth in 13-runner maiden at Chelmsford (1m) on debut 3 weeks ago, left poorly placed. Sure to improve. Fourth at Chelmsford but he was the only one to make up any ground from off the pace. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
4th (7) (50/1 -127%) Dance Time |
50/1(-127%) | (7) Dance Time 50/1, Offered a bit to work on when fourth of 11 in maiden (25/1) at this C&D (soft) on debut. Off 10 months. Off since shaping fairly well on soft ground here last autumn (same trip). |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||

150/1(+0%) | (1) Connected 150/1, Twice-raced gelding. Cheekpieces on for 1st time, eighth of 11 in minor event at Newmarket (8f, good, 150/1) 25 days ago. Needs this run for a handicap mark. Well behind the newcomer King Lear when tried in cheekpieces at Newmarket. |

22/1(-10%) | (3) Glowing Flame 22/1, £18,000 3-y-o, Farhh gelding. Half-brother to 7f-1m winner Elegant Light. Watch betting for clues. £18,000 3yo; fourth foal; half-brother to winners Elegant Light (7f/1m; RPR 94). |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 5 race.
Only narrowly denied over 7f on her most recent run, racecourse experience seemed to benefit LIBERTY on that occasion and Jane Chapple-Hyam's filly looks the one to beat. She must hold every chance of progressing upped in distance, while the improving Ayyab also enters calculations following a decent third at Newmarket in June. King Lear's dam was a dual Group 1 winner and he should not be taken lightly either.
KING LEAR is bred to be the part and shaped with plenty of promise amidst inexperience in what looked a hot novice at Newmarket on last month's debut, so he's the percentage call to build on that and get off the mark at the second attempt. Motriff is another well-bred sort who seems sure to improve on his opening effort at Chelmsford, while Liberty and Ayyab are others capable of getting involved.
King Lear is feared most but MOTRIFF was the only one to make any inroads from off the pace at Chelmsford. That was promising.

Merits consideration back in handicap company. Two seconds in handicaps before making no mistake in a weak maiden. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
2nd (13) (40/1 -82%) Capone |
40/1(-82%) | (13) Capone 40/1, Winner at Chester in June. Creditable second of 7 in handicap at Newmarket (16f, good, 5/6) 47 days ago, well positioned. One for the shortlist. In a fine run of form on his favoured good ground; on the premises. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
3rd (12) (8.5/1 +29%) Tuddenham Green |
8.5/1(+29%) | (12) Tuddenham Green 8.5/1, 4/1, creditable third of 11 in handicap at Goodwood (16f, heavy), running on. Off 101 days but he can't be ruled out. Dual hurdle winner, on good and soft ground; has figures of 3323 in Flat handicaps. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
4th (6) (1.75/1 -17%) Golden Shot |
1.75/1(-17%) | (6) Golden Shot 1.75/1, Improved further as he made it 4 wins from his last 6 starts with wide-margin success in 8-runner handicap at Ffos Las (14f, heavy) 7 days ago, staying on well. Big shout under a 5 lb penalty with more progress on the cards. 4-6 in handicaps and carries a 5lb penalty for last week's wide-margin romp at Ffos Las. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
5th (15) (14/1 +0%) Seahouses |
14/1(+0%) | (15) Seahouses 14/1, Lightly-raced maiden. Cheekpieces on for 1st time, good second of 8 in handicap at Salisbury (12f, good, 11/2) 17 days ago. Significantly up in trip. Blinkers on 1st time now and one to consider. Rhys Clutterbuck was aboard when a staying-on second over 1m4f at Salisbury latest. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
6th (5) (12/1 +25%) Mothill |
12/1(+25%) | (5) Mothill 12/1, Fairly useful winner at 20f over hurdles. 6/1, creditable third of 7 to Quantum Leap in handicap at Haydock (14f, good to soft) on UK Flat debut 25 days ago. Considered. Ran a solid race behind Quantum Leap on his return to Flat action at Haydock. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
7th (1) (12/1 -50%) Quantum Leap |
12/1(-50%) | (1) Quantum Leap 12/1, Thrice-raced winner. Won 7-runner handicap at Haydock (14f, good to soft, 9/1) 25 days ago, despite being very slowly away. Ought to be in the shake-up despite taking a 5 lb rise with very few miles still on the clock. 2-3 and looked well ahead of his mark when overcoming a slow start at Haydock. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
8th (11) (22/1 -22%) C'mon Kenny |
22/1(-22%) | (11) C'mon Kenny 22/1, Latest win at Pontefract in June but below form since, only fifth of 7 in handicap at Salisbury (12f, soft, 10/1) 31 days ago, slowly away. Significantly up in trip with more required. Better than ever at Pontefract but below par since then on soft ground. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
9th (8) (5.5/1 +27%) Alnilam |
5.5/1(+27%) | (8) Alnilam 5.5/1, 2 wins from 3 runs this year, posting a career best when winning 11-runner handicap (9/4) at Yarmouth (14.1f, good to soft) 19 days ago. Likely to improve again now up to 2m. Well in the mix in his hat-trick bid. Has come from off the pace to win 1m6f handicaps at Sandown and Yarmouth; good mark. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
10th (2) (40/1 +0%) First Emperor |
40/1(+0%) | (2) First Emperor 40/1, 3 wins from 14 runs this year. Latest win at Goodwood in May. Seventh of 8 in handicap at Kempton (16f, 15/2) 34 days ago. Not taken lightly if shrugging off latest effort. In good form prior to recent struggles; would have something to prove on soft ground. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
11th (10) (125/1 -25%) Red Force One |
125/1(-25%) | (10) Red Force One 125/1, Ninth of 10 in handicap at York (16.2f, good, 33/1) 17 days ago. Needs a couple of these to falter. Multiple winner but hard to be confident about him after finishing tailed off at York. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
12th (7) (125/1 +17%) Grand Scheme |
125/1(+17%) | (7) Grand Scheme 125/1, Course winner. 50/1 and tongue strap on for 1st time in this code, seventh of 9 in handicap at York (11.8f, good) 17 days ago. Significantly up in trip. Needs to bounce back. After three quiet runs over hurdles he was down the field at York 17 days ago. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
13th (9) (80/1 -21%) Blistering Barney |
80/1(-21%) | (9) Blistering Barney 80/1, Course winner. 28/1, creditable fourth of 14 in handicap at Carlisle (11.2f, soft) 48 days ago. Significantly up in trip. Can give another good account. Good run last time; 1m6f winner here but has stamina to prove over quite this far. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 4 race.
Both Mothill (third) and Quantum Leap (winner) made a hash of the start when they clashed at Haydock last month and, while they are both open to improvement, the revised terms give the former a chance of turning that form around. However, there is no escaping the fact that GOLDEN SHOT has done nothing but flourish since Sir Mark Prescott stepped him up in trip and, on the back of 27-length success at Ffos Las, he is too progressive to oppose.
Plenty with chances but it's impossible to side against GOLDEN SHOT who still looks ahead of his mark under a 5 lb penalty for his wide-margin Ffos Las victory and also remains unexposed over staying trips. Both Alnilam and Quantum Leap have better days ahead of them too and can chase home Sir Mark Prescott's upwardly-mobile stayer in that order. Campaign Trail completes the shortlist.
The penalised Golden Shot will take some beating but QUANTUM LEAP appeals as a horse with a decent future ahead of him.

1st (4) (3.5/1 +61%) Pinafore |
3.5/1(+61%) | (4) Pinafore 3.5/1, Latest win at Ripon in May. 15/8, not seen to best effect when last of 5 in handicap at Lingfield (6f, good) 28 days ago, not ideally placed. Cheekpieces on first time. Dual winner but backward steps last twice and trainer turns to cheekpieces. |

2nd (8) (4/1 -78%) Northern Spirit |
4/1(-78%) | (8) Northern Spirit 4/1, Third win of the year when seeing off 6 rivals over C&D last month. Creditable second of 11 in handicap at Yarmouth (6f, good to soft) 19 days ago and the form has been boosted. Big player. Second at Yarmouth to Dark Trooper who completed a hat-trick at Ascot on Saturday. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
3rd (1) (16/1 -100%) Johnny James |
16/1(-100%) | (1) Johnny James 16/1, Backed at long odds when making a winning start in a 6f Catterick maiden in early June and followed up under a penalty at Southwell 11 days later. Reported to have made a noise when disappointing on 7f Haydock handicap debut since and now sports a tongue tie. Won his first two and reportedly made a noise over 7f on handicap debut. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
4th (2) (2.25/1 +59%) Spirit Of Applause |
2.25/1(+59%) | (2) Spirit Of Applause 2.25/1, Latest win at Haydock in May. Shaped as if still in good form when fifth of 10 in handicap at Newmarket (6f, good, 17/2) 17 days ago. Might just be vulnerable to sharper improvers off his current mark. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
5th (6) (5.5/1 +0%) Billyjoh |
5.5/1(+0%) | (6) Billyjoh 5.5/1, 7/1, won 12-runner maiden at Doncaster (6f, good to firm) on debut in July. Stepped up on that form when third of 9 at Ripon (6f) since. Unexposed now moving into handicap company. Ripon third has been franked and doesn't look on too bad a mark for handicap debut. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
6th (5) (9/1 +18%) Mountain Warrior |
9/1(+18%) | (5) Mountain Warrior 9/1, Won a 6f novice at Southwell in April. Good second on 6f Hamilton handicap debut in May and possibly worth forgiving his recent Doncaster run on heavy ground. Merits consideration. Progressing until reportedly unsuited by the soft ground when last at Doncaster. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
7th (7) (10/1 +38%) Kessaar Power |
10/1(+38%) | (7) Kessaar Power 10/1, Won 6f handicaps at Chelmsford and Yarmouth this spring. Good second at Lingfield (6f, AW) in June but found run of good form coming to a halt at Windsor last time. Freshened up since. Was running well until Windsor last time and could bounce back. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 4 race.
This could be a useful reference point for the future as the likes of Northern Spirit, Mountain Warrior and Pinafore are all progressive three-year-olds with lots to offer as they gain further experience. However, SPIRIT OF APPLAUSE appeals most for an immediate return, as he takes a significant drop in class after a respectable fifth-placed finish in a more valuable handicap at Newmarket last month.
NORTHERN SPIRT has had the form of his latest Yarmouth second boosted and can show he's still on a good mark. Mountain Warrior had testing ground as an excuse for his poor run last time and can bounce back and provide the chief threat ahead of Pinafore.
Brian Ellison's NORTHERN SPIRIT (nap) has to be of strong interest after finishing second to a sharp improver at Yarmouth.

2nd (1) (1.2/1 +47%) Buddy's Beauty |
1.2/1(+47%) | (1) Buddy's Beauty 1.2/1, Off the mark over C&D in June and stepped up on that form when taking 8-runner handicap in impressive fashion at Leicester (5f, good) 47 days ago. 10 lb higher now but we may not have seen the best of her yet. An improving filly by the looks and major claims if handling forecast slower ground. |

3rd (8) (4.5/1 +25%) Snow Berry |

9th (9) (18/1 -50%) Lady Jane Grey |
18/1(-50%) | (9) Lady Jane Grey 18/1, 6/1, ninth of 10 in handicap at Wolverhampton (5.1f) 11 days ago. Others more persuasive. Not the easiest of rides and has gone 0-9 since her winning debut. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 6 race.
HARRY WITH STYLE still has plenty of scope to develop as a sprinter and, as he appears to be thriving on being kept busy since he won at Yarmouth last month, this slight ease in grade seems have come at the right time for John Ryan's three-year-old. Bang On The Bell and Unlimited Data are feared most, while Triple Jaye has something to find with the selection but can still go well in this company.
BUDDY'S BEAUTY showed a big chunk of improvement when scoring at Leicester last time and remains low mileage. She can complete the hat-trick. Snow Berry and Harry With Style can also make their presence felt.
Buddy's Beauty is improving but soft ground would ask questions. HARRY WITH STYLE is one alternative in his current vein of form.
Ths is the racecard key.
