Playful Saint |
(1) (11/8 +21%)11/8(+21%) | (1) Playful Saint 11/8, Lightly raced 9-y-o who put a couple of low-key hurdle runs behind him to get off the mark over fences right away at Hexham last week, deserving extra credit for overcoming not only an error that nearly dislodged his rider but also sitting close to a very strong pace. Can follow up. It was hard work last week at Hexham; 4lb rise is enough for what he achieved. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
1st (2) (10/11 +55%) Matterhorn |
10/11(+55%) | (2) Matterhorn 10/11, Defied a penalty in fine style following a breathing operation and 7-month break at Taunton (16.5f, good to soft) in November. Good second back there 14 days later but very disappointing switched to handicaps next 2 starts. Makes chase debut. Dual novice hurdle winner; quiet in his two handicaps; chasing could be the making of him. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
2nd (3) (10/11 +48%) Gower Prince |
10/11(+48%) | (3) Gower Prince 10/11, Strong in the betting and duly proved a different proposition sent chasing back under less testing conditions when scoring at Wincanton 3 weeks ago despite typically taking strong hold. More on his plate racing off 18 lb higher (8 lb out of the weights) but he's open to improvement. Left his hurdling form behind when impressing on chase debut; raised 10lb. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 3 race.
Playful Saint made a successful start to his chasing career when winning at Hexham eight days ago and he merits respect raised 4lb in the ratings. However, all of his best form has come with some give in the ground and he might not get those ideal conditions here, so GOWER PRINCE shades preference. Although 8lb out of the handicap, Nigel Twiston-Davies' charge produced a polished round of jumping to score at Wincanton on his fencing bow three weeks ago, and that will stand him in good stead. Matterhorn lacks the experience of his two rivals and might be booked for third.
PLAYFUL SAINT did well to make a winning chase debut at Hexham and this looks a good opportunity for him to follow up with Gower Prince 8 lb out of the handicap and chase-debutant Matterhorn arriving on the back of 2 poor efforts.
The safest option is perhaps GOWER PRINCE, who was poor over hurdles but looked a different proposition on his chasing debut.

1st (6) (3/1 -50%) Bellbird |
3/1(-50%) | (6) Bellbird 3/1, Fair maiden on the Flat in France for N. Clement and made an encouraging start over hurdles when third of 12 in novice hurdle at Stratford (16.3f, good to soft). Sure to improve. Placed on the Flat in France; encouraging first hurdle start when third at Stratford. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
2nd (1) (8/1 +33%) Chevington |
8/1(+33%) | (1) Chevington 8/1, Runner-up on the first of 3 outings in bumpers. Minor promise when only mid-division over hurdles so far and will likely been seen to better light in handicaps. Yet to threaten in novice races but his form claims are still up there at this level. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
3rd (5) (3/1 +33%) Opera King |
3/1(+33%) | (5) Opera King 3/1, Fair bumper performer showed aptitude for hurdling when third finish at Market Rasen on debut. Not in same form when mid-field at Warwick since, but could bounce back. Bumper promise but beaten about 20l in his two runs over hurdles with cheekpieces enlisted. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
4th (4) (9/4 -20%) Cusano |
9/4(-20%) | (4) Cusano 9/4, Fairly useful on Flat, winning a 6-runner maiden at Hyeres (12.4f, good to soft) final start in 2023. Since been gelded and is a very interesting hurdles newcomer for powerful yard. 1m4f winner who has joined the right yard to carve out a career over hurdles. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
5th (3) (66/1 -32%) We Ain't Walking |
66/1(-32%) | (3) We Ain't Walking 66/1, Pulled up sole start in Irish points and came off bridle long way out when seventh of 12 to Roaring Legend in maiden at Chepstow on debut. Hard to fancy. Pulled up in a point and finished well held in a Chepstow maiden when sent off at 80-1. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
6th (2) (5/1 -25%) Doeshefitthebill |
5/1(-25%) | (2) Doeshefitthebill 5/1, Very much caught eye when fourth of 7 to Daddy Long Legs in novice at Ludlow last time, finishing with running left having been poorly positioned. Reportedly returned with breathing problem there but has to be respected if that issue has been remedied. Signs of improvement here last time, albeit flattered to be so close to the easy winner. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 4 race.
There was plenty to like about BELLBIRD's hurdling bow at Stratford three weeks ago, where she reached the frame, and given that improvement should be on the cards, Donald McCain's new recruit is taken to get off the mark over timber. A winner on the Flat when trained in France, Cusano warrants the utmost respect for his leading yard, while Opera King, who would hold solid claims on the form of his Market Rasen third in March, heads the remainder.
A good heat, several having shown promise already, though preference is for BELLBIRD after last month's encouraging Stratford third. Cusano is a really interesting recruit to hurdling for the Dan Skelton yard, whilst Doeshefitthebill caught the eye under considerate handling here last time and is also considered.
Dan Skelton's new recruit CUSANO wouldn't have to be anything special to beat these on his hurdling debut.

Great Snow |
(7) (9/1 +25%)9/1(+25%) | (7) Great Snow 9/1, Arrives below par, cheekpieces on when eleventh of 16 in handicap hurdle at Cheltenham (20.2f, good) 24 days ago. Needs to hit the ground running on her chase debut. Hasn't really got going since joining Harry Fry; this is no easy chase debut. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Royale Margaux |
(1) (10/1 -100%)10/1(-100%) | (1) Royale Margaux 10/1, Below-form third of 8 in handicap chase (9/2) at Cheltenham (16.3f, good) 24 days ago. Back up in trip but others more persuasive. Ran well enough last month at Cheltenham to believe she'll go well now down 3lb. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
1st (5) (5/4 +58%) Trapista |
5/4(+58%) | (5) Trapista 5/4, Bids for a hat-trick after recent handicap chase wins at Hereford and Warwick (20f, good to soft). Saddles a 7 lb penalty but still looks the one to beat. Has more on her plate here under a penalty but something has clicked. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
2nd (4) (9/2 -13%) Regal Renaissance |
9/2(-13%) | (4) Regal Renaissance 9/2, Resumed winning ways over hurdles at Chepstow in March and backed it up with a good second of 9 in handicap hurdle at Wincanton (21.4f, heavy) 46 days ago. Goes chasing now and needs considering. Reliable hurdler at about this distance and she has a very solid record at this course. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
3rd (3) (11/1 -69%) Voice Of Calm |
11/1(-69%) | (3) Voice Of Calm 11/1, In good form without winning until only fifth of 8 in handicap chase at Cheltenham (16.3f, good) 24 days ago. Back up in trip. No forlorn hope. Behind Royal Margaux at Cheltenham but returning to further looks a big plus. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
4th (2) (10/3 +5%) Moviddy |
10/3(+5%) | (2) Moviddy 10/3, 5/1 and cheekpieces on for 1st time, respectable fourth of 9 in handicap chase at Cheltenham (25.2f, good) 24 days ago. Back down in trip but not ruled out. Has the form to feature and perhaps failed to stay 3m1f at Cheltenham last time. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
5th (6) (11/2 +21%) Lost Connections |
11/2(+21%) | (6) Lost Connections 11/2, C&D winner but starting to struggle when unseated rider 9th in handicap chase at Cheltenham (16.3f, good) 24 days ago. Back up in trip with more needed. Last year's winner and just two runs since; unseated mid-race at Cheltenham recently. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 4 race.
It might have taken TRAPISTA 13 attempts to open her account over fences, but the daughter of Golden Horn was able to follow up at Warwick next time and appears to have found her groove. A 7lb penalty looks unlikely to prevent another bold bid given that she remains well treated, so a hat-trick could be on the cards. This represents a drop in class for Royale Margaux and she might be the main danger, while Regal Renaissance, a largely consistent hurdler, could have a say if taking to the larger obstacles.
A few of these arrive with a question mark against them but TRAPISTA is a notable exception and looks the way to go in her hat-trick attempt. Chasing-debutante Regal Renaissance could emerge as the main danger given she arrives in good form over hurdles, with Moviddy and Great Snow also worthy of consideration.
A good renewal may go the way of MOVIDDY whose best form is at this trip. 3m1f looked a step too far at Cheltenham last time.

Jazz King |
(1) (28/1 -40%)28/1(-40%) | (1) Jazz King 28/1, Left his hurdle form behind when making a winning start to his chase career here in March 2023 but has showed nothing on both starts since leaving Sam Thomas. Something to prove back over the smaller obstacles. Dangerously handicapped returned to hurdles but with serious questions to answer. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Equus Millar |
(10) (125/1 -150%)125/1(-150%) | (10) Equus Millar 125/1, Looks regressive, going off at big odds and showing nothing when pulled up in handicap hurdle at Fakenham last time. Big ask from out of the weights. Hurdle/chase winner but lightly raced in recent times and clearly regressive. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
1st (2) (17/2 -13%) Collingham |
17/2(-13%) | (2) Collingham 17/2, Has drawn a blank since winning the Scottish County here in February 2023 and last two efforts have been poor. Return to better ground could help and he's not dismissed from a sliding mark. Potentially well-in but last season never really got off the ground. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
2nd (7) (3/1 -9%) Cawthorne Banker |
3/1(-9%) | (7) Cawthorne Banker 3/1, Fairly useful bumper performer who, back on this sort of ground, left previous hurdling efforts well behind when scoring readily in a handicap at Kempton last time. Likely type for the follow up. Just his second handicap when coming clear at Kempton; good ground suits him well. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
3rd (3) (10/3 +17%) Him Malaya |
10/3(+17%) | (3) Him Malaya 10/3, Got off the mark when landing 2m Wincanton handicap in November and creditable third on two of three subsequent outings, coming from a long way back at Kempton on latest. Should go well. Third after a break at Kempton and he wasn't best positioned when the tempo increased. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
4th (8) (25/1 +0%) Gerard Mentor |
25/1(+0%) | (8) Gerard Mentor 25/1, Three of his 4 career victories have come right-handed and he ran well when runner-up at Exeter/Hereford in the autumn. Lost form subsequently, showing little back from 5 months off at Taunton last time. Ran well last season but not last time at Taunton following wind surgery. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
5th (5) (8/1 -33%) Sergeant Wilson |
8/1(-33%) | (5) Sergeant Wilson 8/1, Free-goer who posted a good second at Newbury off a 4 lb higher mark in November. Safely held next 3 starts, no better for a return to quicker ground at Taunton on latest. Has a bit to prove. Coming back to a sharp 2m will help and could run well if his jumping holds up. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
6th (9) (22/1 -100%) Saddlers Quest |
22/1(-100%) | (9) Saddlers Quest 22/1, Arrives at the top of her game last year, completing the hat-trick at Newton Abbot, then acquitting herself well when third at Worcester (demoted from second) 7 months ago. Claims if she's ready for this return. In career-best form when last seen but has been absent since October. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
7th (4) (5/1 +0%) Flight Of Freedom |
5/1(+0%) | (4) Flight Of Freedom 5/1, Won a 2m mares' novice on Warwick hurdle debut in October. Back on the up returning from 5 months off when fourth at Huntingdon 17 days ago and, if sharper for that, she should make her presence felt. Consistent mare not yet fully exposed and it was a likeable run last time after a break. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|F| (6) (9/2 +18%) Zucayan |
9/2(+18%) | (6) Zucayan 9/2, Won this last year and, while he's only been seen twice since, shaped as if retaining ability when fourth of 6 at Hereford on recent return. Should be spot on for this, so not dismissed. Won this 12 months ago and lots to like about his Hereford effort after a break. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|U| (11) (100/1 -300%) My Mate Polly |
100/1(-300%) | (11) My Mate Polly 100/1, No promise in bumpers. Showed more than previously in this sphere when fourth in a juvenile at Hereford last time but had the run of things and is not certain to reproduce it on handicap debut. Well out of the weights. Latest 4th needs treating with an element of caution; out of the weights for h'cap debut. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 4 race.
Saddlers Quest was in cracking form last year, recording three wins from her last four starts, and she has to be considered off a 1lb higher mark than her third at Worcester in October. However, the vote goes to CAWTHORNE BANKER, who scored by an impressive six lengths at Kempton last month and an 8lb rise could prove to be lenient. The son of Flemensfirth could have more to offer on only his third handicap start and he looks the one to beat. Him Malaya could be in the mix for the minor honours.
CAWTHORNE BANKER was impressive at Kempton last time and remains with plenty of handicapping scope on bumper form, so he's capable of following up. Him Malaya and Flight of Freedom arrive in good order with few miles on the clock, so they're expected to get involved, too.
After a good run at Kempton, HIM MALAYA (nap) is taken to gain revenge on Zucayan who beat him in this 12 months ago.

Express Surprise |
(7) (5/1 +64%)5/1(+64%) | (7) Express Surprise 5/1, Lightly-raced maiden who posted a respectable seventh of 13 in handicap hurdle (9/2) at Chepstow (19.4f, good to soft) 29 days ago. Tongue strap on 1st time. Shortlisted. Lesser show on handicap debut when second favourite; now tongue tied and up in trip again. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
1st (9) (9/4 +72%) Jaxonne |
9/4(+72%) | (9) Jaxonne 9/4, Lightly-raced maiden who posted his best effort when fourth of 12 in handicap hurdle at Doncaster (19.4f, heavy) 81 days ago. Needs to build on it now. Closer (still well beaten) on handicap debut last time; moving up in trip looks a positive. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
2nd (4) (7/2 -27%) Awesome Foursome |
7/2(-27%) | (4) Awesome Foursome 7/2, 12/1, creditable third of 14 in handicap hurdle at Exeter (23.1f, good) 23 days ago. Visor on for 1st time and in the mix. 1-13 in handicaps, the win last September, but usually gives his running; first headgear. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
3rd (5) (9/1 -13%) Bear Claws |
9/1(-13%) | (5) Bear Claws 9/1, Resumed winning ways on Flat at Wolverhampton last month so merits serious consideration back in this sphere off a handy-looking mark. Heavy defeats in last four Irish hurdle runs, latest last June; competitive lately on Flat. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
4th (3) (7/2 -40%) Musique De Fee |
7/2(-40%) | (3) Musique De Fee 7/2, 20/1, much improved on his handicap debut when winning over C&D (good) 18 days ago. Not taken lightly despite a 4 lb rise. Improved to win handicap debut over C&D (good) latest, leading close home; up 4lb. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
5th (1) (11/2 +50%) Pearl Island |
11/2(+50%) | (1) Pearl Island 11/2, Still a maiden and only fifth of 7 in handicap hurdle (9/1) at this C&D (soft) 40 days ago. More is required. Made the frame in two bumpers but has not made much impact in his five starts over hurdles. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
6th (6) (16/1 -60%) Fenney Brook |
16/1(-60%) | (6) Fenney Brook 16/1, C&D winner but only eleventh of 12 in handicap hurdle at Hereford (19.7f, soft) 46 days ago. Needs to bounce back. Two C&D runs among her wins; 3rd in November, in between two heavy defeats; mixed messages. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
7th (11) (66/1 -32%) Alfie Sharp |
66/1(-32%) | (11) Alfie Sharp 66/1, 80/1 and tongue strap on for 1st time, twelfth of 13 in handicap hurdle at Stratford (26.4f, good to soft) 21 days ago. Hard to warm to. Heavy defeats on all five starts, the latest on handicap debut at Stratford (3m2f; 80-1). |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
8th (10) (100/1 -100%) Kracquer |
100/1(-100%) | (10) Kracquer 100/1, 20/1 and cheekpieces on for 1st time, last of 7 in handicap hurdle at Market Rasen (16.6f, good to soft) 138 days ago. Blinkers are reached for now. Cheekpieces latest and blinkers today; down the weights but it's hard to make a solid case. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|PU| (8) (14/1 -17%) Behind The Veil |
14/1(-17%) | (8) Behind The Veil 14/1, Lightly-raced maiden hurdler. Needed stiffer test when seventh of 13 in novice hurdle (80/1) at Taunton (16.5f, good to soft) 125 days ago. Up in trip for her handicap debut so very much one to consider on the back of a wind op. Has not shown much in four starts; wind op; upped in trip, which will suit on pedigree. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|RO| (2) (33/1 -450%) Nadim |
33/1(-450%) | (2) Nadim 33/1, Visored for 1st time, seventh of 9 in handicap hurdle (11/8) at Fontwell (17.7f, good) 8 months ago on his final run for Milton Harris. Cheekpieces back on with plenty more needed for his new yard. Quick hat-trick last July; not seen since tailed off in September, final run for M Harris. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 5 race.
Awesome Foursome has hit the frame on each of his last five outings, including his most recent third at Exeter and he could get into contention off a 1lb lower rating. However, preference is for MUSIQUE DE FEE, who got up by just under a length on her handicap bow here last month and she was given a 4lb rise for that triumph. With Sean Bowen booked, she could be the one to beat, while Jaxonne is well worth a second look.
A case can be made for a few of these but BEAR CLAWS returns to this sphere on a good mark and in winning form from the Flat so edges the vote. Behind The Veil is feared most now going handicapping on the back of breathing surgery, with Express Surprise and Musique de Fee also in the picture.
Further improvement from last month's lightly raced C&D handicap winner MUSIQUE DE FEE seems the most potent option.

Goes up further in trip now and not out of things provided he settles better. Respectable runs for new yard in his three handicaps but he needs to find something extra. |

Kingston Kid |
(1) (40/1 -186%)40/1(-186%) | (1) Kingston Kid 40/1, Boasts just the one win from 25 NH runs and out of sorts when last seen for Eugene M. O'Sullivan during second half of last year. Passed over on stable debut. Out of form last autumn in his last two runs for Eugene O'Sullivan; usually wears headgear. |

1st (3) (6/1 -167%) Bethpage |
6/1(-167%) | (3) Bethpage 6/1, Some encouragement in bumpers/mares' maidens and, well backed, saw off stable mate to make a winning handicap debut at Fontwell (17.7f) 23 days ago, asserting run in. Has to be of interest again now she's up and running. Up in trip. Won eight-runner race at Fontwell (2m1f, good) by 4l last time on handicap debut; up 5lb. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
2nd (4) (5/1 -50%) Mactavish |
5/1(-50%) | (4) Mactavish 5/1, Scored twice at Hereford late last year and creditable efforts in defeat from inflated marks thereafter. Probably needs to pull out a bit more but not discounted if arriving in same form following 129 days off. 129-day absence asks a question but he'll be a contender if resuming on song. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
3rd (10) (7/2 +83%) Karakoram |
7/2(+83%) | (10) Karakoram 7/2, Successful at Taunton last spring but largely underwhelming efforts since despite sliding mark, fourth of 10 in handicap hurdle at Ffos Las (20f, good to soft, 6/1) 5 days ago. Needs a couple of these to falter. Tuesday's run at Ffos Las off this career-low mark needs improving on markedly. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
4th (11) (17/2 +47%) No Worries |
17/2(+47%) | (11) No Worries 17/2, Veteran who won 3 times over hurdles in 2021/22 season and struck on chase debut thereafter. However, largely out sorts over hurdles during second half of last year. 6-month break needs to have perked him up. Out of form in the autumn; had good record after a break, prior to last season. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
5th (7) (7/2 +30%) Flashy Boy |
7/2(+30%) | (7) Flashy Boy 7/2, Point winner who offered signs of encouragement over hurdles for Tom Lacey despite looking rather slow. Moved yards and had a breathing operation prior to return (tongue strap now on, too). Market confidence behind him would look significant. 1-5 in Irish points and 0-5 (modest form) for T Lacey over hurdles; wind op and tongue-tie. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
6th (9) (9/1 +55%) Methusalar |
9/1(+55%) | (9) Methusalar 9/1, Winner at Bangor for Alan King back in 2022 but struggled for present connections over both sets of obstacles in recent months. Cheekpieces reached for now. Essentially disappointing since winning over hurdles in May 2022; now tries cheekpieces. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
7th (6) (7/1 -17%) Deadlock |
7/1(-17%) | (6) Deadlock 7/1, Fair form on the Flat and he ran creditably when fourth of 11 in handicap hurdle at Huntingdon (20.7f, good) in March. Feasible to think he could yet have more to offer in this sphere so worth a second look. 0-8; stayed on for fourth of 11 at Huntingdon (2m4f, good) last time; could have a say. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
8th (5) (22/1 +33%) Pawpaw |
22/1(+33%) | (5) Pawpaw 22/1, Scored twice for David Bridgwater last spring but he needs to bounce back in a major way after a break/returned to hurdles following a handful of poor runs over fences for present yard. Two chase wins at 2m5f (good to soft) for David Bridgwater last spring; form has nosedived. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|F| (8) (33/1 -136%) Chinook |
33/1(-136%) | (8) Chinook 33/1, Ex-Irish mare ran well on second start for this stable when fifth over C&D last spring but not scaled same heights since, only sixth of 8 in a C&D handicap back from 5 months off 18 days ago. Has a reduced mark but needs a revival on this second run since her winter break. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 5 race.
BETHPAGE proved a decisive winner on her handicap bow when getting the better of her stablemate at Fontwell last month. The daughter of Getaway should relish this rise in distance and she could make light work of a 5lb rise in the ratings. Mactavish may appreciate this drop back in distance and the seven-year-old is feared most on his return to action, ahead of Flashy Boy, who could be freshened up by a change of scenery on his debut for Fergal O'Brien.
BETHPAGE showed improved form to make a winning handicap debut at Fontwell 23 days ago and, now up and running, she looks of interest again boasting a far less exposed profile than most. Flashy Boy is another worth monitoring now handicapping on return for his new yard and market confidence behind him would look significant. Deadlock and Mactavish complete the shortlist.
Bethpage faces a significantly longer trip and DEADLOCK, who's in only his third handicap, looks a more assured stayer.

The chart reads from right to left to today's class 5 race.
I LOOK HOW I LOOK posted another creditable effort in defeat when runner-up behind a progressive rival at this venue recently. Dan Skelton's mare shapes as if this greater emphasis on stamina could unlock some potential and compensation could beckon. The biggest threat may emerge from Call Me Arthur, who bounced back to form when second at Ffos Las last month, while a first-time visor could spark enough interest from Fantomas for the eight-year-old to feature too.
A few with chances but SAINT BIBIANA should prove suited by this step up in trip so looks the way to go off a lenient mark in her bid for a breakthrough hurdling victory. Call Me Arthur is feared most on the back of his good Ffos Las second, although a solid case can also be made for the likes of I Look How I Look, Lion's Vigil and Fantomas.
This looks tricky but I LOOK HOW I LOOK produced an encouraging second over 2m5f here 18 days ago. Call Me Arthur is second choice.
Ths is the racecard key.
