1st (2) (4/5 +60%) Mixedwave |
4/5(+60%) | (2) Mixedwave 4/5, Has become a most likeable type, scoring at Market Rasen in November (disqualified for rider's overuse of whip) before resuming winning ways over C&D in January. Ran another good race when bumping into a leniently-handicapped one last month and looks sure to go well again. C&D winner in January and also ran very well when second at Market Rasen last month. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
2nd (3) (11/2 -57%) Grizzly James |
11/2(-57%) | (3) Grizzly James 11/2, Fairly useful ex-French hurdles winner who scored over fences at Hereford last spring. Got back on track when third of 10 in handicap chase at Plumpton in January but unable to build on that at Lingfield (20f, soft) subsequently. Must bounce back but can. Placed at Plumpton (2m3f) two starts ago but well held since and not one to rely upon. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
3rd (5) (11/4 +31%) Maasai Warrior |
11/4(+31%) | (5) Maasai Warrior 11/4, First run for 22 months and since leaving Paul Henderson when encouraging second at Fontwell (21.5f, soft) in November but went backwards from that when pulled up at Hereford a month later, errors as the race began to develop proving an issue. Not out of things here. Ran big race in defeat on yard debut in November; jumping error cooked his goose last time. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|PU| (1) (11/1 -83%) Emotional Memories |
11/1(-83%) | (1) Emotional Memories 11/1, Showed ability in a bumper and posted best effort over hurdles (albeit having set the slow pace) when third at Lingfield (23f, heavy) 10 days ago. Now heads over the larger obstacles and the market should guide expectations. 0-8 over hurdles but was a good second off this mark in the autumn; chase debut today. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 5 race.
MIXEDWAVE continues to be in cracking form after filling second place in a class 4 event at Market Rasen last time and he is only 1lb higher here. Pam Sly's seven-year-old takes a drop back down in grade and could be hard to beat. Emotional Memories wasn't beaten far into third over the smaller obstacles at Lingfield last month and he has to be considered on his chasing debut, while Mackie Dee is another to note after his third at Market Rasen.
This can go to MIXEDWAVE, who continues to go from strength to strength this term and Pam Sly's most likeable 7-y-o can notch a fourth success over the larger obstacles. Venetia Williams has had a couple of winners this week and her Grizzly James may emerge as the main danger if able to leave a disappointing effort behind at Lingfield last month, with Committee of One rounding off the shortlist.
Second to an improver on his stable debut in November, MAASAI WARRIOR might be too good for Mixedwave.

1st (9) (12/1 -71%) Lexie's Moon |
12/1(-71%) | (9) Lexie's Moon 12/1, Modest form both runs over hurdles, fifth of 13 in novice at Ludlow (21.2f, soft) 25 days ago. Possibilities. Shaped with promise over 2m5f on both hurdle starts; place claims if drop in trip suits. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
2nd (7) (11/10 -51%) Wilful |
11/10(-51%) | (7) Wilful 11/10, Landed Catterick bumper in December and again showed a willing attitude when very good second in similar company there following month. Interesting hurdling debutant. Made all in Catterick bumper in December and is a major contender on this hurdlling debut. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
3rd (1) (6/4 +63%) Balhambar |
6/4(+63%) | (1) Balhambar 6/4, Fairly useful handicapper on Flat who failed to match that form when sixth in novice hurdles at Fontwell and over C&D this winter for Michael Bell. Still needs considering for his new handler. Respectable sixth in C&D maiden in January, his second hurdle run; now with new stable. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
4th (4) (100/1 -100%) L'allier |
100/1(-100%) | (4) L'allier 100/1, Debut fifth in Roscommon bumper for Gavin Cromwell in the summer but sold for £5,000 and offered little in similar company at Doncaster on sole run for Christine Dunnett. Didn't show enough in two bumpers to warrant serious consideration on stable/hurdle debut. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
5th (5) (13/2 -44%) No More Bolero |
13/2(-44%) | (5) No More Bolero 13/2, Fairly useful Flat winner in Germany who hinted at promise on his yard/hurdling debut after 4 months off when fading fifth of 7 in novice at Sandown (16f, good to soft) 29 days ago. Can build on it. Made underwhelming hurdle debut last month but Flat ability offers hope he can improve. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
6th (3) (80/1 -142%) Henrysbrotherjack |
80/1(-142%) | (3) Henrysbrotherjack 80/1, Bred to make a hurdler but well held in novices at Wetherby and Lingfield this year. Likely to need more time. Beaten about 40l in two 2m novice hurdles this year; low-grade handicaps beckon. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
7th (8) (100/1 -52%) Drill To Dream |
100/1(-52%) | (8) Drill To Dream 100/1, Modest 1m4f maiden on the Flat. No forlorn hope starting out in this sphere. Safely held in two low-grade AW handicaps last month; of limited interest on hurdle debut. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
8th (10) (200/1 -100%) Clenched |
200/1(-100%) | (10) Clenched 200/1, Poor maiden on the Flat who has offered little both runs over hurdles this winter at Doncaster and Plumpton. A disappointing maiden on the Flat and hasn't shown a great deal on first two hurdle runs. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
9th (2) (22/1 -120%) Danny's Friend |
22/1(-120%) | (2) Danny's Friend 22/1, £12,000 3-y-o, Court Cave gelding. Closely related to modest chaser Thunder In Milan, stays 3m, and half-brother to fairly useful hurdler/useful chaser Kiltealy Briggs. Noteworthy newcomer who is worth a market check. Half-brother to very useful chaser Kiltealy Briggs but probably best watched on debut. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|PU| (11) (250/1 -150%) O'mhaire |
250/1(-150%) | (11) O'mhaire 250/1, No worthwhile form on the Flat so needs this switch to hurdling to spark major improvement. Showed no significant promise on the Flat; can't be recommended on hurdle debut. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 4 race.
WILFUL failed to carry a penalty to success on his third bumper start at Catterick, but he was far from disgraced in second and it would be no surprise to see him make an impact on his debut over timber. South Omo Zone struck on his first start for Anthony Charlton in a bumper at Hereford in January and he could have a say, while any market confidence behind Danny's Friend would also be of interest in this open contest.
Those with hurdling experience don't set the bar too high so this looks a good opportunity for Jonjo O'Neill's fairly useful bumper winner WILFUL to make a successful start in this sphere. Balhambar appeals as the pick of those to have raced.
Bumper winner WILFUL is proven on soft ground and looks the one to beat now he goes hurdling.

Jack's A Legend |
(5) (9/1 -125%)9/1(-125%) | (5) Jack's A Legend 9/1, Off 10 months before getting off the mark in 4-runner handicap hurdle at Southwell (15.8f, heavy) in November. That wasn't a deep race and he's never been the easiest to keep sound. Engaged 2.25 Newbury Saturday. Wide-margin winner of Southwell handicap in November; well held at Newbury yesterday. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
1st (1) (7/2 +22%) Jipcot |
7/2(+22%) | (1) Jipcot 7/2, Showed fairly useful form over hurdles in France, winning a pair of juveniles at Pau. Below that level over hurdles and fences for current connections in 2023 but returns from a 3-month break with his stable in very good form. Refitted with the headgear he wore in France. In good form over fences in the autumn; player if tuned up after three-month break. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
2nd (4) (10/3 +52%) Bluegrass |
10/3(+52%) | (4) Bluegrass 10/3, Useful on the Flat for Aidan O'Brien (placed in the 2022 Dante). Showed promise over hurdles when runner-up in a pair of juveniles in March. A shade underwhelming on his handicap debut at Ascot but a bit more like it when third over this C&D 3 weeks ago. Close third of six over C&D last month; can do better if more fluent over the flights. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
3rd (2) (11/8 +39%) Damarta |
11/8(+39%) | (2) Damarta 11/8, Improved performer over hurdles following wind surgery, confirming promise of his Uttoxeter third when running out a comfortable winner at Southwell (15.8f) in January. 9 lb rise is fair enough given the manner of that success. Won readily by over 7l at Southwell in January and could still have a lot more to offer. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
4th (3) (9/2 -64%) Royal Rhythm |
9/2(-64%) | (3) Royal Rhythm 9/2, Dual hurdles winner in Ireland and, after 6 months off, he made a successful debut for Jonjo O'Neill at Carlisle (17.2f) in October. Firmly back on track with impressive success at Wetherby 2 months later and he can do better still. Probably the one to beat. Won going away at Wetherby on Boxing Day and is now 2-3 for Jonjo O'Neill. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
5th (6) (22/1 -57%) Greystoke |
22/1(-57%) | (6) Greystoke 22/1, Opened hurdles account at Newton Abbot in May 2022 and hit the target on the Flat last spring. Sent off huge odds but shaped quite nicely starting out for new yard at Taunton last month. Dangerous if building on that. Made quite pleasing stable debut last month; now needs to build on that performance. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 4 race.
ROYAL RHYTHM won by over four lengths in this grade at Wetherby on Boxing Day and he now has a 6lb higher rating to contend with. The son of Jet Away has really hit the ground running since joining the Jonjo O'Neill stable, and he can make it three wins from four starts for his new connections. Damarta won very nicely at Southwell last time and could go well off 9lb higher on only his third handicap start, while Bluegrass finished a close-up third over C&D last month and is another to watch out for.
ROYAL RHYTHM made it 2-3 for Jonjo O'Neill with a bit to spare at Wetherby on Boxing Day, and with his limit for this yard probably not yet reached, he's fancied to shrug off a 6 lb rise. Jipcot has headgear on for the first time since his days in France and he represents a stable in form, with Greystoke another to consider at the foot of the weights.
Olly Murphy's DAMARTA (nap) got his act together with an emphatic win in January and could still be well treated after a 9lb rise.

1st (2) (5/2 +17%) Lounge Lizard |
5/2(+17%) | (2) Lounge Lizard 5/2, Looked more straightforward than had previously been the case (in blinkers) when landing small-field handicaps at Catterick/Taunton during second half of last term. Better form in defeat this season, excellent second at Cheltenham 5 weeks ago. Big shout down in class. Excellent second in valuable Cheltenham handicap in January and commands respect here. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
2nd (7) (10/3 +5%) Dibble Decker |
10/3(+5%) | (7) Dibble Decker 10/3, Back-to-back winner of handicap chases at Huntingdon last season, including this race off 4 lb lower. All the better for return when resuming winning ways in first-time tongue strap at Wincanton (20.2f, heavy) 8 weeks ago and should go well again. Dual C&D winner last season and back in form with hard-fought Wincanton success in January. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
3rd (4) (7/2 +36%) General Medrano |
7/2(+36%) | (4) General Medrano 7/2, Fairly useful hurdler who has done even better over fences this term, winning 2m handicaps at Uttoxeter and Huntingdon in October. Some decent efforts in defeat since, doing too much too soon at Sandown last time. Dual 2m chase winner in the autumn and might have untapped potential over this trip. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
4th (3) (10/1 +0%) Xcitations |
10/1(+0%) | (3) Xcitations 10/1, Returned to something like his best with a run under his belt when scoring at Sandown in November. Mixed bag subsequently but his mark has eased as a result. As good as ever when winning in November but has lost his way a bit lately. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|F| (1) (18/1 -50%) Black Gerry |
18/1(-50%) | (1) Black Gerry 18/1, Won all 4 of his starts when completing last season but has made little impact in 3 outings this term. Blinkers back on. Won two quite valuable events last April but has looked out of sorts this season. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|PU| (6) (7/1 -180%) Eximia |
7/1(-180%) | (6) Eximia 7/1, Useful hurdler/chaser in France, successful 4 times in each sphere at up to around 2½m. Changed hands for €80,000 in November and starts out for this yard off a fair-looking mark. Ten-time winner in France (including four chases); makes British debut here. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|PU| (8) (7/1 +22%) Patroclus |
7/1(+22%) | (8) Patroclus 7/1, £150,000 purchase who was 2-4 over hurdles. Similar form over fences, winning handicap (off 6 lb higher) at Leicester in 2021/22. Well beaten in similar event final start that season and absent since (22 months). Has left Nicky Henderson. Tongue strap on for 1st time. Market should guide. Won off 6lb higher for Nicky Henderson in 2022; makes stable debut after 685-day absence. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|PU| (5) (125/1 -213%) Flic Ou Voyou |
125/1(-213%) | (5) Flic Ou Voyou 125/1, Enhanced his fine record at Wincanton with another victory in handicap 12 months ago. However, well held all 3 starts since, leaving Paul Nicholls prior to latest start. Left Paul Nicholls after lacklustre seasonal debut and also struggled on stable debut. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 3 race.
Runner-up in a valuable handicap at Cheltenham in January, LOUNGE LIZARD sets the standard on form and can strike now dropped in grade off a 3lb higher mark. Soft ground is another plus, and he is preferred to the Wincanton scorer Dibble Decker, as well as General Medrano, who is a capable sort on his day. Eximia is another to note for market support on her first run in the UK.
EXIMIA starts off for Venetia Willams off a temping mark given the useful form she showed in France for previous connections so gets the vote over Lounge Lizard, who arrives on the back of an excellent second in a Premier Handicap at Cheltenham. Last year's winner Dibble Decker also needs considering.
The vote goes to LOUNGE LIZARD, who was an excellent second in a hot Cheltenham handicap in January.

1st (5) (9/4 -13%) Pipers Cross |
9/4(-13%) | (5) Pipers Cross 9/4, Runner-up on all 3 starts since joining this yard and may well have won if making her effort sooner when beaten only a neck in a 13-runner event at Leicester (20.5f, heavy) 40 days ago. Shortlist material. 0-12 over hurdles but has finished second on all three stable starts (2m4f-3m); big player. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
2nd (8) (22/1 -57%) Oliver's Island |
22/1(-57%) | (8) Oliver's Island 22/1, Veteran who ran one of his better races when second of 4 over 27f at Sedgefield (heavy) last week but this looks a deeper race and he's 4 lb out of the weights. No match for winner when second of four at Sedgefield recently; out of handicap again here. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
3rd (3) (22/1 -120%) Jalisco Star |
22/1(-120%) | (3) Jalisco Star 22/1, Has shown a bit in her qualifying runs and her opening handicap mark looks feasible. Could play a part. Unexposed mare who ran well when third in 3m1f Catterick maiden last month; handicap debut. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
4th (7) (15/2 -36%) Watchoutitscookie |
15/2(-36%) | (7) Watchoutitscookie 15/2, In good form last spring and best effort of this season when second over C&D (heavy) last month. Claims if he can build on that. Just 1-14 over hurdles but was good second over C&D when upped in trip last month. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
5th (4) (15/2 +46%) Hillfinch |
15/2(+46%) | (4) Hillfinch 15/2, Won a C&D handicap last March. Has failed to fire this winter but her mark has come down as a result and it's possible a return to this venue will spark a revival. Also wears a first-time visor (replacing cheekpieces). C&D winner off 3lb higher last spring but out of form this season; new headgear tried. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|PU| (6) (9/1 +0%) General Hubble |
9/1(+0%) | (6) General Hubble 9/1, Made a wining reappearance in a 23f Market Rasen handicap in November but note in the same form in a hurdle and chase since. Bounce back needed. Hurdle winner in November but two disappointing runs have followed, the latter over fences. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|PU| (1) (11/4 +0%) Chauffeur Driven |
11/4(+0%) | (1) Chauffeur Driven 11/4, Won his only start in points and has shown some fair form in this sphere, third of 10 in a novice hurdle at Exeter (17f, heavy) last time. Steps up significantly in trip for handicap debut. Very interesting runner. Irish point winner; third in two 2m hurdles; hiked up in trip for handicap debut. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|PU| (2) (13/2 +0%) Nimbus Boy |
13/2(+0%) | (2) Nimbus Boy 13/2, Landed a gambled on just second start for current yard when winning 2½m handicap hurdle at Hereford in January but only a respectable fourth on his 2 outings since. Needs to get back to the Hereford form. 2m3f winner in January; held twice over 2m4f since but has claims if this new trip suits. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 5 race.
Second on each of her three starts for these connections, PIPERS CROSS deserves a change in luck and she may just get that stepping back up in trip. Chauffeur Driven has shown a modicum of promise in novice hurdles and the former point-to-point winner is another who could benefit from this stiffer test of stamina. Nimbus Boy and Watchoutitscookie are capable of being in the shake-up as well.
David Pipe has been among the winners in recent days and 3m point winner CHAUFFEUR DRIVEN appeals as a likely improver now stepping up significantly in trip for his handicap debut. Pipers Cross has made a good start to life with Robbie Llewellyn and looks the obvious danger.
Handicap debutant CHAUFFEUR DRIVEN is yet to go beyond about 2m under rules but he won a 3m Irish point last spring and appeals most.

1st (3) (5/4 -25%) Ma Shantou |
5/4(-25%) | (3) Ma Shantou 5/4, Shantou gelding. Brother to fair 19f hurdle winner Giacosa. Dam 2¼m hurdle winner in France. Excellent start when third of 10 at Fairyhouse in December, travelling smoothly. Since changed hands for £120,000 and he's the one to beat. Bought for £120,000 after very promising debut third at Fairyhouse in December. |

2nd (1) (4/1 +11%) Carismatic Soldier |
4/1(+11%) | (1) Carismatic Soldier 4/1, €47,000 3-y-o, Soldier of Fortune gelding. Half-brother to Our Bab (hurdles winner in USA) and bumper winner/fair hurdler Fiadh. Dam, 2m hurdle winner. Interesting newcomer. Has pretty good standard to reach on debut but stable does very well in bumpers. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
4th (4) (14/1 -17%) Extra Cover |
14/1(-17%) | (4) Extra Cover 14/1, Jack Hobbs mare. Half-sister to very smart hurdler/smart chaser Thyme Hill and fair hurdler/fairly useful chaser Storming Strumpet. Half-sister to bumper and high-class hurdle/chase winner Thyme Hill; interesting newcomer. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
5th (6) (40/1 -186%) Kashmeer |
40/1(-186%) | (6) Kashmeer 40/1, 1,000 gns 3-y-o, Holy Roman Emperor filly. Half-sister to 1m winner Driving Force. Dam maiden on Flat (stayed 1m). Flat-bred filly; represents up-and-coming stable; market may guide. |

6th (5) (15/2 -50%) Reteti |
15/2(-50%) | (5) Reteti 15/2, Sixties Icon gelding. Brother to 2 winners, including fair hurdler Greystoke. Dam 8.3f winner. Backed at long odds and knew his job when third of 11 over this C&D in November. Made quite promising debut when third of 11 in junior bumper here in November. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
7th (7) (250/1 -279%) Phoenicia Better |
250/1(-279%) | (7) Phoenicia Better 250/1, Well held starting out at Newcastle. Well down the field when 100-1 for debut at Newcastle (AW) in January. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 5 race.
A promising third on his debut at Fairyhouse in December, MA SHANTOU has since joined new connections and looks the one to beat on his British debut. Reteti shaped well over shorter here last November and the rise in distance looks a major positive, while Carismatic Soldier makes his debut for a stable that knows how to ready one first time out.
Having chased home a pair trained by Willie Mullins and Gordon Elliott starting out at Fairyhouse, MA SHANTOU changed hands for £120,000 and a repeat of that form may well suffice here. Jax Junior is a threat on his runner-up effort over C&D, while Carismatic Soldier is a likely-looking newcomer.
Emma Lavelle's new recruit MA SHANTOU made a very promising debut on soft ground at Fairyhouse in December and gets the nod.
Ths is the racecard key.

Horse racing is a popular and historic sport in the UK, with a tradition dating back centuries. It is a multi-billion pound industry that attracts millions of spectators each year and generates significant economic activity.
There are two main types of horse racing in the UK: flat racing and jump racing. Flat racing is run on a level course and is typically shorter in distance, while jump racing involves horses jumping over obstacles and is generally longer in distance. Both types of racing are popular with spectators and bettors, and they take place at various racetracks throughout the country.
The most famous horse racing event in the UK is the Grand National, which is held annually at Aintree Racecourse in Liverpool. It is a jump racing event that is known for its challenging course and has become a national institution in the UK. Other notable horse racing events in the UK include the Derby, held at Epsom Downs Racecourse in Surrey, and the Royal Ascot, held at Ascot Racecourse in Berkshire.
Horse racing in the UK is regulated by the British Horseracing Authority (BHA), which sets rules and standards for the industry. It is responsible for the welfare of racehorses and the safety of jockeys and trainers, as well as ensuring fair and transparent racing practices.
In addition to its economic and cultural importance, horse racing in the UK also plays a significant role in the breeding and training of thoroughbred horses. Many of the world's top thoroughbreds are bred and trained in the UK, and the industry plays a vital role in the preservation and promotion of the breed.
Overall, horse racing is an integral part of British culture and a major contributor to the country's economy. It is a thrilling and exciting sport that continues to attract a loyal following and generate significant interest from spectators and bettors around the world.
