5/1(+38%)
(3) Allbetsoff 5/1, Bagged handicaps at Southwell and over C&D in 2023, plus a 6-runner Huntingdon claimer in November. Didn't shape badly on return at Southwell (20.4f, good) in April and failure to settle proved costly over the same C&D next time. Drops back in trip here with the hood refitted and couldn't rule out.
C&D winner; mark suggests that he might find a few too good even if handling conditions..

(2) Paddy The Horse 11/4, Back-to-back winner here in 2022, latterly taking a C&D handicap off a 7lb higher mark. Hasn't managed to get his head in front since but he's clearly very effective here (course form figures read 23112) and is a big player judged on his decent effort in a Class 2 Kelso handicap last time.
Has shown on his last three starts that he is competitive on this mark; each-way player..

Captain Zebo

5
5/1(-11%)
(1) Captain Zebo 5/1, Made it 7 wins from 24 hurdles starts when scoring here (2½m, good to soft) 3 weeks ago. That was his first run for 10 months, so he's entitled to come on for it and dropping back in trip won't be an issue (scored over C&D last June). However, one or two of these make more appeal for win purposes.
2m4f winner here latest; has shown before that he can string a series of wins together..

(7) Malangen 50/1, Successful twice at Perth last year but he was a below-par third (beaten nearly 20 lengths) behind Serious Ego over C&D when last seen in November. Hood back on.

(5) Book Of Secrets 11/1, Confirmed his return to form in running away with a weak maiden at Market Rasen last August. However, beaten a fair way both subsequent starts and he's opposable starting out for new connections on the back of an 8-month absence.

(4) Snookered 80/1, Multiple scorer for Brian Ellison but you have to go back to July 2022 for his latest success and he offered little on debut for new yard following a 16-month absence here (pulled up in the handicap won by Captain Zebo) 3 weeks ago.
Five-time hurdle winner at up to 2m4f; bit to prove after his recent return from a layoff..

(6) Serious Ego 7/2, Veteran who won back-to-back C&D handicaps in November and added to his tally at Perth (16.2f, soft) last time. 5 lb rise for that is offset by Conor Rabbitt's claim, a capable conditional rider who is 2-3 when partnering this gelding. Strong claims.
Goes well here; arrives on back of a Perth win; up 5lb but has 5lb claimer; big player..

(8) Prince Nino 28/1, Struck gold twice at Perth in 2023 but form has tailed off since his latest success in September and his effort at Market Rasen last time was particularly poor.

16:15 Hexham Handicap Hurdle (Class 4) 16f Race Class Flow

The chart reads from right to left to today's class 4 race.

Last year's winner Captain Zebo made a successful return to action when scoring over 2m4f here last month and a 3lb rise in the ratings shouldn't prevent another bold bid. However, this drop in trip could leave the veteran vulnerable, with a chance taken on C&D winner ALLBETSOFF. The Mark Walford-trained gelding is now only 2lb higher than his wide-margin victory at this track in September and he could be ready to strike again. Serious Ego also enjoys it at this venue and completes the shortlist.

The vote goes to PADDY THE HORSE, who did well all things considered to finish as close as he did in a stronger race than this at Kelso last time. Dropping back in trip here won't be an issue for the 9-y-o. Serious Ego regained the winning thread at Perth and he is feared most ahead of Allbetsoff and Captain Zebo.

Given his love of Hexham and a claimer on board to help offset his rise, SERIOUS EGO is taken to add to his recent Perth win.

16:55 Hexham Handicap Chase (Class 5) 20f Race Class Flow

The chart reads from right to left to today's class 5 race.

Having posted his best effort in handicaps when runner-up over track and trip recently, compensation could be headed in BACKBYJET's direction. First-time cheekpieces are likely to aid Brian Ellison's gelding and a 3lb higher rating looks far from insurmountable. The biggest threat may emerge from last month's C&D winner The White Volcano, who capitalised on a career-low mark, while a change of scenery could revitalise stable debutant Concrete King.

FOLLOW YOUR ARROW shaped with encouragement when fifth behind The White Volcano back from a break over C&D last month and, now 14 lb better off with that rival, George Bewley's charge is taken to emerge on top this time. Backbyjet is third choice.

Preference is for CUDGEL, who was behind The White Volcano last time but can reverse those placings on these better terms.

17:30 Hexham Handicap Chase (Class 4) 24f Race Class Flow

The chart reads from right to left to today's class 4 race.

The combination of a return to chasing and greater emphasis on stamina saw ELLEON back in the winner's enclosure over C&D. Sam England's charge won with enough in hand that day to suggest he's capable of going in again and a 6lb rise looks more than workable. Having pulled up on his last two outings, Motion In Limine clearly comes with risks attached, although a wind procedure could help the nine-year-old get back on track. He is feared most, ahead of Zwicky.

DR SHIROCCO looked a shade unlucky when chasing home Elleon over C&D 11 days ago and he is taken to get the better of that rival this time. It's by no means a two-horse race, though, with Ashington and Zwicky both viable candidates, too.

Having run some sound races over fences this year, ELLEON (nap) is taken to confirm recent C&D placings with Dr Shirocco.

18:05 Hexham Conditions Hurdle (Class 4) 16f Race Class Flow

The chart reads from right to left to today's class 4 race.

KAARESS was the best of these hurdling newcomers on the Flat having won four times, including a victory over 1m2f on soft ground. Brian Hughes' presence is a positive and she's preferred to another filly in On The Bubble, who also tasted success on soft going on the level when scoring over a mile at Redcar. The remainder have shown little on the Flat, with Nobodys Girl perhaps proving best of them.

KAARESS is the clear pick of these based on Flat exploits and she is taken to see off On The Bubble. The other three all looked very limited on the level, with Nobodys Girl likely to prove the best of them.

In an unappealing race with none of the five having experience over hurdles, KAARESS is the suggestion with Nobodys Girl next best.

18:35 Hexham Handicap Hurdle (Class 5) 20f Race Class Flow

The chart reads from right to left to today's class 5 race.

HALPHA SOLEIL faces an easier task than when fourth over track and trip last time. He was beaten only a neck on testing going here before that and Micky Hammond's charge may prove the one to beat. Get A Superstar has a shout on a recent fourth at Market Rasen when making his handicap debut, while Huit Reflets has been in the mix lately and may improve further with a visor applied for this.

GET A SUPERSTAR and Halpha Soleil are the two that make most appeal. The latter is back down appreciably in grade having run well in a 0-120 over C&D 3 weeks ago, but the former is totally unexposed and is narrowly preferred following a highly encouraging handicap debut effort at Market Rasen. Boyneside should be suited by the step back up in trip and may prove best of the rest.

The vote goes to BOYNESIDE who put up a career best on the last occasion he ran over 2m4f with plenty of give in the ground.

19:07 Hexham Handicap Hurdle (Class 5) 23f Race Class Flow

The chart reads from right to left to today's class 5 race.

RUMBLE B has won over C&D on a couple of occasions this year, including a success on heavy ground back in March. He can defy a 4lb rise for his latest victory and go in again. A couple of these return from layoffs with a shout. No Rematch ended last year with a short-head defeat at Exeter and has switched yards subsequently, while Tartan Cookie reappears following a longer absence but is back on a handy mark.

RUMBLE B is in a rich vein of form at present and, having edged out an unexposed one on his most recent outing, he's fancied to go in again. No Rematch can provide the main threat if ready to roll after a break on his first start for a new yard.

A weak contest and given how well he acts here, RUMBLE B is taken to defy a 4lb rise and record a third C&D success.
