MINERS GAMBLE took a step back in the right direction when runner-up over 7f here and although comfortably put in her place, the winner has since numbered Mysteryofthesands among her victims when going in again at Beverley. Brian Ellison's gelding is just preferred to Hello Cotai, who also arrives on the back of a second placing and won't need the application of blinkers to prompt too much improvement. Lady Ava ended 2023 on a high by getting off the mark on soft ground at Catterick, while more is anticipated from Questionable now she goes handicapping.

Upped in trip, HELLO COTAI ran his best race when beaten only a neck at Goodwood earlier this month and he could be ready to go one better with blinkers on first time. Miners Gamble is bred to be suited by this longer distance and is feared most after his good second here last time, while Lady Ava is another to note on her return.

Having gone close on heavy ground at Goodwood three weeks ago, HELLO COTAI (nap) is taken to go one better and get off the mark.

Even though the winner has since performed well in Listed company, Shemozzle's costly defeat over C&D leaves a bitter taste and she will do well to successfully concede weight all round. A chance is taken on the fitness of MIZUUMI. Marco Botti's filly accounted for a couple of subsequent winners on her Kempton introduction and, given time to strengthen up further, she appears to have a bright future. Thewind Cries Mary is another to bear in mind.

MIZUUMI overcame inexperience to make a winning debut at Kempton in December and looks sure to improve, so is the way to go. Shemozzle retains potential, while there is more to come from Thewind Cries Mary.

Another chance is given to SHEMOZZLE, who has a point to prove after flopping when odds-on here last month. Mizuumi is next best.

Yaroogh is fully expected to come on from his debut in a hot Newmarket novice, but the performance inspired little confidence so it's best to look to the newcomers. CHELSEA EMBANKMENT's price rose to 92,000gns as a yearling and he is a half-brother to a string of winners, so he could be worth chancing. Green Storm is another well-related debutant to consider, while Moon Sniper is out of a half-sister to Group 1 winners Persuasive and Creative Force so is worth a second look.

This can go to a newcomer, with CHELSEA EMBANKMENT preferred to Seagulls Eleven before market clues. Yaroogh will surely show more this time.

Tom Dascombe has some useful 2yos this year and preference is for the newcomer APHRODITES ROCK, a half-sister to two winners.

A contest in which the market is likely to prove a good indicator, though a chance can be taken on EARTHY. Earthlight has made a bright start to his stallion career, and Amy Murphy's filly, who is related to five separate winners, looks a likely type on her racecourse bow. Karl Burke's juveniles have once again come out firing, so it would come as no surprise to see Toomuchforme go well, while others to note include Loch Leven, Stage Effect and John's Dragon.

The newcomers are likely to dominate with Karl Burke's TOOMUCHFORME looking the standout before market clues. John's Dragon and Loch Leven are other likely types.

The attractively bred LOCH LEVEN earns the vote for Ollie Sangster, with fellow newcomer Toomuchforme next on the list.

Others might be open to more improvement, but this looks to be an excellent opportunity for AZURE BLUE, whose stable have hit a real purple patch of late. Michael Dods' mare was far from disgraced in the Duke Of York on her reappearance nine days ago, and has upwards of 14lb in hand on official ratings. Electric Storm hit the woodwork in a similar contest at Bath last month and might prove to be the main danger, although Got To Love A Grey and Queen Of Zafeen must enter calculations too.

AZURE BLUE possesses much the best form on show and teed herself up well for this when a recent seventh in the Duke of York after an absence so is impossible to oppose. Queen of Zafeen (second choice) and Electric Storm both have better days ahead of them and appeal as the two to chase home Michael Dods' smart mare.

The expected testing ground is an unknown for clear form pick Azure Blue, and a chance is taken on the unexposed MIDREAM.

PEARL EYE is versatile regarding ground preference and, having started the current campaign with a win and a respectable fourth-placed finish at Pontefract and Chester respectively, the four-year-old has a lot going for him here. Never Ending and Arkendale appeal most from the remainder with a recent run under their belts, but Doha is a filly on the upgrade and is a key player on her handicap debut off a workable mark.

The impeccably bred DOHA made no mistake when confirming her debut promise at the second attempt when running out an emphatic winner of a Windsor maiden in the autumn. Every inch a useful prospect, she starts life in handicaps from what looks a good mark and earns the vote back up in trip. Arkendale leaves the impression he has more to offer and he's feared. Never Ending and Pearl Eye can also feature.

The very lightly 4yo DOHA has a prestigious pedigree and was impressive in a maiden at Windsor last October.

Amancio wasn't showing any signs of stopping when he made all over a mile here last month and is a solid option with Rose Dawes retaining the ride. However, a 5lb higher mark combined with the additional stamina demands make for a stiffer test. With that in mind, the vote goes to ROGUE RAIDER, who already has C&D experience and is open to any amount of progression on just his second start for Peter Chapple-Hyam. Handicap debutant Corrales is another to consider.

Rose Dawes got a good tune out of AMANCIO here last month and, with this step up in trip unlikely to be an issue, he is taken to go in again. Rogue Raider made a positive start for this yard over C&D and he is next best, ahead of Corrales on handicap debut.

There are a couple of interesting handicap newcomers, headed by CORRALES whose pedigree suggests he'll be suited by the longer trip.
