1st (8) (3.33/1 -67%) Star Start |
3.33/1(-67%) | (8) Star Start 3.33/1, Scored at Doncaster in August and found only an improver too strong at Leicester (10f, good to firm, 2/5) 34 days ago. Remains of interest. Doncaster winner off 4lb lower two runs back; beaten at 2-5 next time; a possible. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
2nd (7) (9/1 +10%) Chester Tonik |
9/1(+10%) | (7) Chester Tonik 9/1, Unreliable sort. Winner at Salisbury in May but proved a major let-down at Newbury (10f, good to soft) next time. Off the mark at Salisbury in May; not so good last time; could go well back after a break. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
3rd (4) (12/1 -50%) Natacata |
12/1(-50%) | (4) Natacata 12/1, Fair maiden who ran below form when third of 4 in handicap at Ffos Las (12f, soft) 41 days ago, looking on the slow side. Needs to get back on track. Good second at Lingfield two runs back (lesser effort latest); a possible down in trip. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
4th (1) (22/1 -57%) Iron Sheriff |
22/1(-57%) | (1) Iron Sheriff 22/1, Proved better than ever when making it 3 wins from his last 5 starts at Pontefract in June but followed a below-par effort with an even worse one over C&D last week. Enough to prove at present. Not been in top form recently (13l-sixth here last week); ideally needs quicker ground. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
5th (2) (7/2 +36%) Broctune Red |
7/2(+36%) | (2) Broctune Red 7/2, Course winner who is running consistently well, excellent third in 11-runner event at Newcastle (10.2f) on most recent outing. Can remain competitive. Third over 1m2f on last three starts, including on soft ground at Ayr; each-way chance. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
6th (10) (50/1 +0%) Thomas Cranmer |
50/1(+0%) | (10) Thomas Cranmer 50/1, Thirty three runs since last win in 2018 and ran poorly at Thirsk (12f, soft) last week. Not been in the best of form this year and others make more appeal. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
7th (9) (18/1 -64%) Recorwoman |
18/1(-64%) | (9) Recorwoman 18/1, Unreliable sort who capitalised on a falling mark in 7-runner handicap at Nottingham (10.2f, heavy) 70 days ago, just holding on. Not an obvious type to follow up. Nottingham apprentice race winner in July (1m2f, soft, form ordinary); now 3lb higher. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
8th (6) (4/1 +50%) Panama City |
4/1(+50%) | (6) Panama City 4/1, Course winner who shaped as if still in good form when fourth of 10 in handicap at this C&D (heavy) 6 days ago, faring best of those ridden prominently. Needs considering. Three fair efforts here recently including 4th over C&D last week (heavy); chance. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
9th (5) (50/1 -213%) True Nation |
50/1(-213%) | (5) True Nation 50/1, Thrice-raced maiden. 11/1, fourth of 6 in maiden at Carlisle (6.9f, soft) 13 days ago. Step up in trip will suit on handicap bow but opening mark could have been kinder. Promise in maiden/novices at up to 1m; quite interesting up in trip on handicap debut. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
10th (3) (4/1 +38%) Western Beat |
4/1(+38%) | (3) Western Beat 4/1, 13/2, not seen to best effect when sixth of 12 in handicap at Newcastle (10.2f) 18 days ago, headway when snatched up over 2f out. Can be treated as still in top form. 0-14 on turf but close second over C&D on soft two runs back; wouldn't rule out. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 6 race.
Broctune Red has strong claims on the form of his half-length third over this trip at Newcastle last month and he is able to race off a 5lb lower mark now back on grass. However, his record of just one win from 24 starts on turf tempers enthusiasm and preference is for WESTERN BEAT, who went close off a 1lb higher perch over this C&D on her penultimate outing and she seems to like it here. Star Start got within half a length of landing a 1m2f double at Leicester on his latest outing and should play a leading role again, despite going up 4lb for that effort.
STAR START is holding his form really well and, having found only an improver too strong at Leicester on his most recent outing, he appeals as the most persuasive option. Western Beat, Panama City and Broctune Red are all worthy of respect, though.
The suggestion is PANAMA CITY who has been running well enough recently to suggest he can pick up a race like this.

1st (3) (9/4 +0%) Really Darn Hot |
9/4(+0%) | (3) Really Darn Hot 9/4, Thrice-raced maiden. 9/2, third of 5 in minor event at Lingfield (8f, AW) 10 days ago. Probably needs to pull out more to take this. Best run when 2nd at Wolves two runs back (Middlesex 3rd); below that last time; possible. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
2nd (1) (9/2 -64%) Middlesex |
9/2(-64%) | (1) Middlesex 9/2, 18/1, third of 7 in maiden at Wolverhampton (8.6f) on debut 25 days ago. Open to progress. In the mix for yard that enjoyed a treble on Saturday. Creditable 3rd on debut (AW); should improve; chance if handling the softer ground. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
3rd (2) (5/2 +55%) Miss Galiway |
5/2(+55%) | (2) Miss Galiway 5/2, Once-raced maiden. 18/1, seventh of 9 in maiden at Epsom (7f, good to firm) on debut 39 days ago, merely passing beaten rivals. Up in trip which should suit, but may need more time. Creditable 7th of nine on Epsom debut (7f, good, 18-1); can do better now up in trip. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
4th (5) (9/2 +0%) Nina Rapida |
9/2(+0%) | (5) Nina Rapida 9/2, Twice-raced maiden. Fourth of 9 in maiden at Epsom (7f, good to firm, 14/1) 39 days ago, not knocked about (race has thrown up a couple of winners). Should have more to offer up in trip now. Fair efforts so far, last time finishing 4th over 7f at Epsom; longer trip should suit. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
5th (4) (10/1 -33%) Checkmeout |
10/1(-33%) | (4) Checkmeout 10/1, Twice-raced maiden. Fourth of 5 in minor event (10/1) at Lingfield (8f, AW) 10 days ago. Open to improvement and could be one for middle-distance handicaps next year. Ordinary efforts in two races on the AW (7f/1m); plenty to prove on turf debut. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
6th (6) (20/1 -67%) Satay Street |
20/1(-67%) | (6) Satay Street 20/1, Foaled April 3. 7,000 gns yearling, Zoustar filly. Dam, 16.5f winner, half-sister to smart winner up to 1½m (stayed 15f) Horseplay out of useful 9.5f-13f winner (stayed 2m) Mischief Making. 7,000gns yearling; half-sister to a 2m winner out of a 2m winner; interesting on debut. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 5 race.
MIDDLESEX caught the eye picking up well for third after being outpaced on debut over a similar trip at Wolverhampton and, with that experience under her belt, Charlie Johnston's filly is fancied to improve past Really Darn Hot to score here. The latter was a couple of lengths ahead of the selection in second that day but subsequently failed to land a serious blow at Lingfield and was soundly beaten on her sole turf start, albeit in a much tougher race than this. Nina Rapida has shown signs of ability in two 7f outings and should appreciate this step up in trip.
MIDDLESEX showed plenty on her debut at Wolverhampton and should know a lot more this time. She gets the vote over Nina Rapida and Really Darn Hot.
Although the softer ground is a concern, MIDDLESEX ran well enough on her debut to suggest she can take this.

Ziggy's Condor |
(1) (5/4 +9%)5/4(+9%) | (1) Ziggy's Condor 5/4, Winner at Pontefract on debut in July. Better form in defeat since, third of 7 in novice event (13/8) at York (6f, good) 16 days ago and he sets the clear standard. All runs over 6f, winning on debut and placed both starts since; drop to 5f a concern. |

1st (5) (7/2 +50%) Pals Battalion |
7/2(+50%) | (5) Pals Battalion 7/2, Knew more than on debut when third of 13 in novice event at Redcar (5f, good, 18/1) 7 days ago. Improved run when third at Redcar last week; this stiffer track should suit; chance. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
2nd (6) (9/2 +72%) Ottoman Force |
9/2(+72%) | (6) Ottoman Force 9/2, Reportedly had tack issue when fifth of 8 in novice event at Chester (6.1f, soft) 10 days ago. Two fair runs over 6f (bit slipped through his mouth last time); needs to improve for 5f. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||

18/1(+55%) | (13) Moku Manu 18/1, Foaled March 26. Mondialiste filly. Sister to 2-y-o 6f winner Oahu and half-sister to 10.7f winner Flyin Hawaiian. Dam, 2-y-o 5f winner, half-sister to smart 7f-1m winner Commander Cave. Sixth foal; sister to 6f AW 2yo winner Oahu; likely to be better for this first run. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
4th (7) (11/2 +73%) The Bobster |
11/2(+73%) | (7) The Bobster 11/2, Foaled May 3. 65,000 gns foal, 32,000 gns yearling, Invincible Spirit colt. Half-brother to smart 9f-11f winner Majestic Dawn and useful 2-y-o 5f/6f winner Rousing Encore. Newcomer for excellent yard. Half-brother to 2 winners; stable's juveniles in good form but looks second string. |

5th (10) (10/3 +79%) Westend Avenue |
10/3(+79%) | (10) Westend Avenue 10/3, Displayed ability amidst greenness when third of 6 in maiden at Nottingham (5f, heavy) on debut 54 days ago, slowly away. Open to improvement. Mayson filly; 5l-third of five at Nottingham on debut (5f, heavy); likely improver. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
6th (4) (7/2 +0%) Gladly Ever After |
7/2(+0%) | (4) Gladly Ever After 7/2, Winning debut at Chepstow in July. 4/1, third of 11 in novice event at Windsor (6f, good) 43 days ago. 6f Chepstow winner on debut; fair efforts since; interesting down to 5f for first time. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
7th (11) (20/1 +70%) Queen Of Africa |
20/1(+70%) | (11) Queen Of Africa 20/1, Twice-raced maiden. 80/1, eighth of 10 in maiden at Lingfield (7f, AW) 27 days ago. Down in trip. First run for yard after leaving John Butler. 2,000gns buy after modest efforts in two 7f AW maidens; may do better down in trip. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
8th (3) (22/1 +12%) Emerald Army |
22/1(+12%) | (3) Emerald Army 22/1, Sent off 150/1 but showed more than on debut when seventh of 13 in novice event at Redcar (5f, good) 7 days ago, never nearer. Fair efforts over 5f but has 3l to find with Circus Lion on Redcar form last week. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
9th (8) (40/1 +60%) Sassy Glory |
40/1(+60%) | (8) Sassy Glory 40/1, 200/1, seventh of 13 in maiden at Thirsk (6f, good to soft) 39 days ago. Well beaten at long odds in her two starts so far and looks more the sort for handicaps. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
10th (9) (40/1 +39%) Unavailable |
40/1(+39%) | (9) Unavailable 40/1, 100/1, last of 9 in minor event at Lingfield (5f, AW) 20 days ago. Modest efforts over 5f at Yarmouth and on the AW at Lingfield; improvement needed. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||

150/1(+0%) | (14) Spin Off 150/1, Twice-raced maiden. 200/1, last of 13 in minor event at Redcar (5f, good) 7 days ago. Poor form; plenty to find with several of these on last week's form at Redcar (5f, good). |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||

80/1(+20%) | (12) Caradonna 80/1, Foaled April 8. 13,000 gns yearling, Fastnet Rock filly. Closely related to useful winner up to 7f Indian Sounds and half-sister to 7f-1m winner Alezan and useful 9.5f winner Zain Sarinda. Dam 9f/1¼m winner. Closely related to a 5f-7f winner; stable's horses usually improve for a run. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 5 race.
Pontefract winner ZIGGY'S CONDOR filled the runner-up berth in a competitive sales race over 6f at York before finishing third over the same C&D 16 days ago, form which has been boosted by the fourth scoring since. This looks easier and he is fancied to make the drop in trip a winning one, possibly at the main expense of Gladly Ever After, who also finished ahead of a subsequent winner when third over a furlong further at Windsor last time. Circus Lion only found one too good at Redcar last Monday and completes the shortlist.
ZIGGY'S CONDOR hasn't done a lot wrong in defeat having made a winning debut in July and he's fancied to successfully concede weight all round. Circus Lion and Gladly Ever After head the opposition.
The choice is PALS BATTALION who was a good third at Redcar last week and should be even more effective on this stiffer track.

(5) (12/1 +0%)12/1(+0%) | (5) Ey Up It's Maggie 12/1, Latest win at Ripon in August. 7/2, not disgraced having been pestered on the front end when fourth of 9 in handicap at this C&D (heavy) 6 days ago. More required here. Won at Ripon in August; solid C&D fourth since; goes well on soft ground but more required. |

1st (2) (2/1 +11%) Korker |
2/1(+11%) | (2) Korker 2/1, Twelve runs since last win in 2022. 13/2, ran one of lesser races when fourteenth of 20 in handicap at York (5.4f, good to firm) 34 days ago, merely passing beaten rivals. Looks the one they all have to beat. Very useful at best but 12 runs without a win; leading form claims if back on his A-game. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
2nd (4) (4/1 +56%) Looking For Lynda |
4/1(+56%) | (4) Looking For Lynda 4/1, Bounced back to best to score for the first time in handicap company in 17-runner event (7/1) at York (5f, good) 16 days ago. This tougher and looks to be his yard's second string on jockey bookings. In excellent form, landing York h'cap latest; this is tougher but no forlorn hope. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
3rd (6) (5/4 -37%) Marine Wave |
5/4(-37%) | (6) Marine Wave 5/4, 11/2, confirmed that she remained in good heart stepping back up in grade when 1½ lengths third of 12 to Pink Crystal in listed race at Ayr (5.5f, good to soft) 4 days ago. Big chance provided she copes with this quick turnaround. Reliable sort; very good third in Ayr Listed event latest; big shout at these weights. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
4th (1) (8/1 -7%) Hiya Maite |
8/1(-7%) | (1) Hiya Maite 8/1, Speedy and likeable type who won on penultimate start over C&D in June. Not disgraced faced with much firmer conditions at Doncaster since and returns after a near 3-month break but looks up against it. C&D winner in June; good fourth at Doncaster following month; much respected after a break. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
5th (3) (300/1 -50%) Indie Skies |
300/1(-50%) | (3) Indie Skies 300/1, 250/1, ran as if in need of run for fitness and experience when eighth of 9 in minor event at Kempton (6f) on debut 8 days ago. Beat only one in 6f Kempton novice on debut; this Equiano gelding looks out of his depth. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 2 race.
Korker (14th) retains ability and holds a reasonable chance of returning to winning ways. However, he also has a habit of fluffing the start and was a long way adrift of Looking For Lynda (eighth) when they clashed at York last month. Nevertheless, this is a drop in class for MARINE WAVE, who was placed in the Arran Stakes at Ayr last week and is hard to oppose with the age and sex allowances boosting her claims.
A potential match on paper between KORKER and Marine Wave, with preference for Karl Burke's smart handicapper who has run some huge races in defeat this term (runner-up 3 times) and can shrug off a lesser effort at York last month. The selection's stablemate Looking For Lynda was back to winning ways last time and could capitalise should either of the main protagonists fluff their lines.
Preference is for reliable MARINE WAVE (nap), who can gain a deserved first win of 2023 after posting a series of useful runs.

1st (4) (7/1 +72%) Peace Walk |
7/1(+72%) | (4) Peace Walk 7/1, Last of 14 in maiden at York (7f, good to firm, 28/1) on debut 32 days ago, looking clueless. Tailed off at York but that was in the traditionally strong Convivial Maiden. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
2nd (1) (3/1 -50%) Conde |
3/1(-50%) | (1) Conde 3/1, Improved further on softer ground than previously when third of 7 in a Chester novice in July. Pulled hard when well held on nursery debut at Goodwood (7f) last time but has been gelded since and much better expected here. Once placed and has to be of interest in a novice that lacks any depth. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
3rd (8) (6/1 +25%) Scottish Reel |
6/1(+25%) | (8) Scottish Reel 6/1, Bred more for stamina than speed and offered only limited promise when fifth of 7 in minor event (17/2) at Thirsk (8f, good to soft) on debut 25 days ago. Prominent to a point before hanging and weakening over 1m at Thirsk (good) 25 days ago. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
4th (9) (11/10 +8%) Arctic Sunrise |
11/10(+8%) | (9) Arctic Sunrise 11/10, Foaled April 7. 200,000 gns yearling, Siyouni filly. Half-sister to useful French/Australian 1m-1¼m winner Mantastic and French 9f winner Naadirah. Makes obvious appeal on paper in a weak-looking novice. Newcomer drawn wide but wouldn't need to be anything special to make an impact. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
5th (6) (125/1 -25%) Restricted |
125/1(-25%) | (6) Restricted 125/1, Twice-raced maiden. Last of 14 in minor event at Kempton (7f, 150/1) 18 days ago. Havana Grey half-brother to six winners early signs haven't been encouraging. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
6th (7) (20/1 +20%) Scarfo |
20/1(+20%) | (7) Scarfo 20/1, Ninth of 14 in maiden at Thirsk (6f, good to soft, 22/1) on debut 39 days ago. Needs to leave that well behind up in trip. Easy to back at 22-1 when only ninth of 14 runners at Thirsk (6f, good). |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
7th (5) (8/1 +50%) Publicity |
8/1(+50%) | (5) Publicity 8/1, Foaled March 31. Advertise gelding. Half-brother to 3 winners, including 7f winner Redemptive and 8.6f-1¼m winner Measured Moments. Worth a market check. Bred to win races but stable's newcomers are usually best watched. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
8th (3) (100/1 +0%) King Of Cali |
100/1(+0%) | (3) King Of Cali 100/1, Well held in a pair of minor events. Has finished last in both his races at Thirsk (7f/1m; good) and makes no appeal for now. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 5 race.
Conde sets a respectable standard and, given this is easier than the class 2 nursery he contested at Goodwood last time, he can go well from a handy draw on his first run since being gelded. Scottish Reel is also considered, as he is entitled to be wiser after his introduction at Thirsk 25 days ago. Nevertheless, ARCTIC SUNRISE, a 200,000gns purchase, holds a more appealing pedigree given that her dam is a half-sister to Alexander Goldrun, and she won't need to be out of the ordinary to win this on her racecourse bow.
ARCTIC SUNRISE makes plenty of appeal on paper and wouldn't need to be anything out of the ordinary to make a winning start in a weak-looking novice. Conde may well have benefited from a gelding operation having pulled hard on his nursery bow at Goodwood when last seen and is an obvious threat.
This looks a weak novice and it's not hard to take a chance on the expensive yearling ARCTIC SUNRISE.

1st (3) (13/2 +19%) Autumn Festival |
13/2(+19%) | (3) Autumn Festival 13/2, C&D winner. Seven wins from 26 Flat runs. Last of 7 in handicap at Chepstow (7.1f, good, 3/1) 29 days ago. Cheekpieces need to spark him back to life. Won this last season; inconsistent this year and has finished tailed off the last twice. |

2nd (5) (5/1 +23%) Ugo Gregory |
5/1(+23%) | (5) Ugo Gregory 5/1, Four-time C&D winner. Latest win at Haydock in August. Creditable second of 7 in handicap at Chester (7.6f, soft, 5/1) 11 days ago. Ran a solid race last time at Chester and entitled to go well on a course he likes. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
3rd (4) (3/1 +50%) Metahorse |
3/1(+50%) | (4) Metahorse 3/1, Eleven runs since last win in 2022. 7/1, bit below form sixth of 11 in handicap at Ascot (7f, good to firm) 18 days ago. Definite player on his runner-up effort prior to that. Two seconds before an excusable defeat at Ascot; seems to prefer drier ground. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
4th (8) (12/1 +40%) Intervention |
12/1(+40%) | (8) Intervention 12/1, Twenty two runs since last win in 2022. 50/1, sixth of 9 in handicap at Newbury (8f, good to firm) 28 days ago, finding test too much. Dropped to a handy mark and this trip more suitable. Last five wins have been at 6f and he's done most of his winning on the AW. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
5th (6) (9/2 +50%) Cliffcake |
9/2(+50%) | (6) Cliffcake 9/2, C&D winner. Eight wins from 29 Flat runs. Latest win here in May. 22/1, below form seventh of 17 in handicap at York (7f, good) 60 days ago, left poorly placed after rare slow start. Enters calculations. Won on his only previous visit here when edging out Uno Gregory in May off 3lb lower. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
6th (2) (11/4 +17%) Urban Sprawl |
11/4(+17%) | (2) Urban Sprawl 11/4, Off the mark for the season at Goodwood in May. Fourteenth of 17 in handicap at Leopardstown (7.3f, good to firm) 17 days ago, though wasn't seen to best effect. This represents a big drop in class. Major claims on early-season form but he's just gone cold of late. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
7th (9) (22/1 +33%) Miss Britain |
22/1(+33%) | (9) Miss Britain 22/1, Latest win at Catterick in April. Eighth of 9 in handicap at this course (8.4f, good to firm, 22/1) 24 days ago. Running well earlier in the year but moderate latest effort here when back from a break. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 4 race.
Autumn Festival took this race last season for David O'Meara and races off 1lb lower in the handicap now. He hasn't been at his best recently but if first-time cheekpieces help, he may go close. UGO GREGORY likes it here with four wins over C&D, one off this mark and one off 2lb higher, and he may make it five after a solid second at Chester last time out. Zozimus arrives in good form and is another to consider.
URBAN SPRAWL's placed effort in the Britannia in June is very persuasive form at this level and down markedly in class, he can return to winning ways. Zozimus should give it another good go, with Cliffcake likely to bounce back returned to this venue.
Hopefully, this will be run at a decent enough clip to suit ZOZIMUS who has been looking a winner waiting to happen since visored.

Ribkana |
(11) (100/1 -900%)100/1(-900%) | (11) Ribkana 100/1, Cast aside a brace of heavy defeats when second of 7 in handicap at Ripon (8f, good to firm) 21 days ago. 0-14 but runner-up four times this season, including over 1m2f here; not easy to predict. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 6 race.
Hostelry has every chance of landing her hat-trick here despite being put up 4lb for her recent Carlisle success, with Christian Howarth claiming 5lb in the saddle. She can go close with a clear run, but a chance is taken on the younger PREMIERSHIP. He kept on well to win at Yarmouth before failing to see out 1m2f when third at Ripon, but may get back to winning ways over this trip. She's Got Bottle and Poet's Dawn both like it here and are others to note.
There's every chance that 4-y-o PREMIERSHIP has more to offer for Michael Wigham and back over a more suitable trip, he's marginally preferred in favour of Poet's Dawn, who goes unpenalised for his Redcar win a week ago. Hostelry chases a hat-trick so needs considering, too.
Having got back to winning ways last week, the unpenalised POET'S DAWN is taken to beat Hostelry and Sezaam.
Ths is the racecard key.
