LAUGHING JOHN confirmed the promise that he displayed on debut when second at Hereford last time and the son of Postponed will not find many better opportunities than this to get off the mark. Mad Maxios was only beaten a neck when runner-up at Market Rasen most recently and could prove to be the main danger, while Uhtred Ragnarson edges out Dearkeithandkaty to be best of the rest.

Nicky Henderson's LAUGHING JOHN finished just ahead of a good yardstick when second at Hereford and can open his account here.

It wouldn't be a huge surprise if Maura Jeanne bounced back from her latest performance at Sedgefield. However, she remains 8lb higher than her success at Ayr the time before and may be vulnerable to an improver in the shape of BALLYHIHO. Her pedigree suggests the step up in trip will be very much in her favour in what appears to be a winnable contest. Joanna I'm Fine completes the shortlist.

Although Ballyhiho is interesting on her handicap debut the vote goes to BLAME ROSE, whose stable is in good form at present.

It is very hard to oppose TIMETOSHINE, who has won both of her outings over hurdles in impressive fashion. Given the strength of opposition here, Nicky Henderson's mare can easily defy a 12lb penalty. Crazy About Her may not have built on a promising second on debut in a bumper, but she's still the pick of the remainder ahead of Jackie Diamond.

This ought to be very straightforward for TIMETOSHINE, who impressed on her first two hurdling starts and cannot be opposed.

Jeriko Du Reponet only found his stable companion Doddiethegreat too strong for him in the Pertemps Final and has to be respected along with Catch Him Derry, who finished one place behind Nicky Henderson's gelding at Cheltenham. Act Of Authority shaped as though stepping up in trip would suit when runner-up in the Martin Pipe and may prove the biggest threat to BILL JOYCE. His third in the Challow to The New Lion reads particularly well and it's worth forgiving a below-par effort at Cheltenham in January.

A host with chances, the vote going to progressive 7yo TIMMY TUESDAY who could have more to give at 3m and back on a left-handed track.

MAXIMUM OFFERS got off the mark at the second attempt over hurdles at Huntingdon when stepping forward considerably. The fact he now goes left handed may be a concern, having hung right on both hurdle runs, but Jamie Snowden's gelding could have the edge over Small Town Kid, who arrives with something to prove. Mr Griffiths appeals most of the remainder.

This can go to MAXIMUM OFFERS, who won over 2m at Huntingdon last time and should fare even better now up in trip.

LUCKY LUGGER hit the crossbar when trying to follow up his Uttoxeter success at Leicester last time. That performance shows that the eight-year-old can be competitive off this mark and he appears to be the safest pick in an open event. Jet Of Dreams also arrives here in top form and has to be noted, while Boston Joe completes the shortlist.

The suggestion is BOSTON JOE, who has a very good strike-rate over fences and might be boosted by the new cheekpieces.

Lulamba arrives on the back of a terrific effort in the Triumph Hurdle at Cheltenham. Denied by only a neck on that occasion, the four-year-old takes on his elders including the unbeaten HORACES PEARL. Fergal O'Brien's charge has built on his promising bumper form, that culminated with a victory in the Grade 2 at this meeting last year, by winning both subsequent starts in maiden/novice hurdles and he's taken to make his mark at this level. Miami Magic finished a creditable runner-up in a Grade 1 contest here on Boxing Day and this extra distance should suit. He's preferred to maiden hurdle winner Koktail Divin, while Gordon Elliott has won the last three renewals and relies on Honesty Policy.

Several of these have plenty of potential but Triumph Hurdle runner-up LULAMBA looks the one to beat with his 4yo allowance.

AWAYTHELAD appeared to relish a step up in trip when successful over an extended 3m at Southwell last month and with the potential of more to come, Ben Pauling's charge can defy a 5lb rise and double his tally. The Boola Boss is 4lb higher than when on target at Newbury recently but he has a commendable strike-rate over fences and another bold bid looks likely, especially with Jamie Brace taking off a handy 5lb. Nothin To Ask finished a creditable second at Newcastle in December and is perhaps best placed to chase the pair home.

This looks good for AWAYTHELAD (nap), who was an emphatic winner when upped to 3m last month and could still be well treated.

Having posted a respectable fourth in the Grade 2 Pendil at Kempton in February, it may be worth taking a chance on IMPERIAL SAINT going up in trip. The biggest threat may emerge from the lightly-raced Peaky Boy, who was out of his comfort zone when finishing tailed off in the Reynoldstown at Ascot 49 days ago. The seven-year-old had previously looked progressive in handicap company and it's too soon to be writing him off. Ultima fourth Happygolucky commands respect, while Docpickedme can also get involved.

FLIC OU VOYOU was unsuited by soft ground last time, but Henry Hogarth's veteran will be much more at home on this faster going. The 11-year-old landed a double last autumn that included a course and distance success, and he's preferred to Cerendipity. The latter narrowly beat Special Rate when successful over a longer trip here three weeks ago, while Choosethenews won this contest last year, although it was heavy going on that occasion and he remains 7lb higher.

Deborah Cole has done extremely well with IMMORTAL FAME, who is taken to return to winning ways now he's going back left-handed.

SMUGGLERS HAVEN bumped into an improver when attempting to complete her hat-trick at Plumpton recently, but Sara Bradstock's mare is only 2lb higher for that performance and if progressing for a step up in trip, she will be tough to beat. Keppel Queen hit the frame over C&D last time out and is entitled to be thereabouts once again, while Phillapa Sue appeals most of the remainder.

Keppel Queen is respected but SMUGGLERS HAVEN looks more progressive and could have untapped potential at around 3m.

TEAHUPOO was unable to go back-to-back in the Stayers' Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival last month, finishing second to the enigmatic Bob Olinger, but compensation could await Gordon Elliott's charge. Often campaigned lightly, the eight-year-old ought to be fresher than most and will be tough to beat if near the top of his game. Willie Mullins' unexposed Kitzbuhel landed a Grade 3 at Gowran in February and has to be of interest stepped up markedly in distance, while Home By The Lee, whose rider stood no chance when badly hampered at Cheltenham, should not be overlooked. This is a stronger renewal than the one Strong Leader won 12 months ago.

With further improvement plausible, GWENNIE MAY BOY is preferred. Last year's winner Strong Leader is second choice.

This shorter distance looks the logical move on that evidence and Brian Ellison's charge gets another chance. Thank You Blue looks to have solid claims, given he escapes a penalty for winning a conditionals' race at Kempton four days ago, while Turn And Finish was set a stiff task in the Fred Winter at Cheltenham last month and can fare better at this level.

Nevertheless, this is an equally tricky handicap and cases can be made for plenty, including Oh So Audacious, Artificer and the handicap debutant Jungle Cruise. However, slender preference is for the adaptable WINDSOR PASS, who is an attractive proposition reverting to a mile and turf.

It may be worth going with ANGLO SAXSON who has won four times here and is 3lb below his last winning mark.

Last year's winner I Am Maximus heads a strong JP McManus squad with Iroko, Perceval Legallois and Meetingofthewaters other strong candidates in the famous green and gold silks. That said, an 8lb higher mark for t he former, combined with a preparation that hasn't completely gone to plan and his potential quirks, are enough to look elsewhere. Iroko has long been touted as the ideal Aintree type and warrants plenty of respect, despite the trip being a slight concern. Similar comments apply to Perceval Legallois, but the eight-year-old arrives at the top of his game after big handicap successes at Leopardstown. Intense Raffles won the Irish National last season and arrives following a fine effort in the Bobbyjo when just denied by Nick Rockett, but the reopposing fourth, MINELLA COCOONER, makes plenty of appeal. A sound jumper who won the bet365 Gold Cup on a decent surface at Sandown last April, that Fairyhouse effort was his best of the season and it appears he has been brought along steadily to peak on the big day. Stumptown (first) and Vanillier (third) further boost Gavin Cromwell's hopes following their efforts in the Cross Country at Cheltenham, while Hewick, Minella Indo and Hyland are others expected to prove popular.

The Irish can dominate again, with MINELLA COCOONER (nap) getting the vote from Hewick, Stumptown and Perceval Legallois.

CHESTER NIMITZ was placed on both outings last autumn including when caught close home at Navan and again shaped well when fourth to Glen To Glen on his reappearance in a Curragh maiden that has been working out well since. The selection has yet to race beyond 6f but has every chance of getting the trip at this track. Jorge Alvares has a similar profile having been placed a number of times over 6f for Kevin Ryan last year and probably rates the chief threat. Brosna Green and Lady Lilac both indicated ability in two outings at Dundalk and now switch to the turf for the first time.

The vote goes to LADY LILAC, who looks guaranteed to see out the mile well after two big runs over the distance at Dundalk

Naga and Lady Ridgewood appeal most from those with experience, although many would argue that Casa De Salinas achieved more when she overcame greenness to make a winning debut over a mile at Kempton in December. However, while that trio all command respect, WINTER'S SONG, who is a full-sister to Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare winner Whuheida, is the one who stands out on pedigree. This could be an ideal starting point for the Godolphin-owned filly.

Most of the runners are interesting. REGAL AGENDA is the suggested first choice ahead of Lady Ridgewood.

However, this really doesn't appear to be any tougher and he can atone given most of the opposition have something to prove. Top Of The Bay is the pick of those on the back of filling the runner-up spot in weak event over C&D most recently. Ribeye is the pick of the remainder.

Jac Jumper has been knocking at the door and should go close again, but a chance is taken on last year's winner SIX ONE NINE.

SUNSHINE SOUL ran with credit in a handful of novice events last year, most notably when second to the subsequent Queen Mary winner Leovanni on her debut at Nottingham. George Boughey's filly struggled in a handicap at Lingfield last time out but she is more than capable at this level and ought to go very close. Peregrine Falcon lost her way after making a promising debut at Fairyhouse last June, but she has since moved to Patrick Morris and could be revitalised following a 219-day absence. Others to note include Queenofdestruction and Pouting.

A few of these have become disappointing but GALAXY ZOO has only had the two races and now kicks off for Ralph Beckett.

The Denis Cullen-trained filly should have scope for further improvement and gets the vote over Weegeebear who got off the mark in style last time for Cormac Farrell in a 7f Dundalk claimer. The Kodi Bear gelding had Captain Ciano (now 10lb worse off) nearly six lengths back in fourth with Letters Of Love (now 17lb better off) in sixth. The Mizen Queen and Edergole's Angel are others to consider.

It might be crucial to get away fast here and likely front-runner IN THE MINUS could be the answer. The Mizen Queen can improve too

ALPINE TRAIL impressed when winning on debut over an extended 1m1f at Wolverhampton in February and is the logical one to be with here. The son of Dubawi, who cost 550,000 euros as a yearling, has a sterling pedigree and is a notable type for Charlie Appleby. Palazzo Blu also made a winning start over 1m2f at Chelmsford and is an obvious threat switching to turf. Antrim, whose dam is a close relative of Enable, is an appealing newcomer.

Alpine Trail and Palazzo Blu defend unbeaten records but the well-bred ANTRIM might be up to making a winning start.

The Arkle produced arguably the most thrilling finish of the whole Cheltenham Festival and L'EAU DU SUD played a big part by finishing a close-up fourth in that memorable event. Therefore, it is highly notable that Dan Skelton tries the seven-year-old with a tongue-tie and cheekpieces combination as he bids to emulate the last two winners of this race, who tasted defeat in the Arkle but immediately bounced back with success here. An outsider on the day, Touch Me Not was less than a length in front of the selection at Cheltenham and must have every chance of upholding the form if he adapts to this flatter course. Kalif Du Berlais and Brookie are old rivals and, off level weights, the former can reaffirm his superiority based on a literal reading of November's Fulke Walwyn encounter at Newbury.

Big players L'Eau du Sud and Only By Night are difficult to split on Arkle form. KALIF DU BERLAIS is the strongest alternative.

This might be best left to JAPETUS, who was a promising second when introduced at Kelso in February, before going one better in a similar race over C&D three weeks ago. The Nicky Richards-trained four-year-old looks to be well placed to brush aside a penalty. Coffee Boy, I Am Simba and Ben Reid are interesting newcomers to monitor in the betting.

Ben Reid is one of several interesting newcomers but JAPETUS quickened well to win over C&D last month and can follow up.

Wine Dark Sea shaped with considerable promise when filling the runner-up spot on his debut in September and is sure to prove popular on his return, but a chance can be taken on ARBOREOUS. Archie Waton often does well with his debutants on an artificial surface and this son of Wooded could be a similar success story, especially given that he is related to a couple of winners on the all-weather. Special Ghaiyyath was the subject of significant market support over C&D two weeks ago, finishing third, and it will be interesting to see if those supporters return.

The choice is WINE DARK SEA who made a promising debut at Yarmouth last autumn, especially as the market suggested little was expected.

HIGHER KINGDOM won four times at Dundalk for John McConnell and appears to be on a competitive mark having kept on from off the pace to finish fourth behind Top Of The Pops at Gowran on Wednesday. The selection can be troublesome in the stalls and hopefully will get away on terms. There is little to choose between Rockbury Lad and Free Solo on running behind Pink Oxalis over this trip at Dundalk last month. The Michael O'Callaghan-trained gelding likes to be held up for a late challenge and should go close given some luck in running. Dundalk maiden winner Vierson is another to consider.

Queen's Company signed off last year with a convincing victory over 1m4f at Kempton and she is currently rated only 1lb higher than the last of her three course wins, but she has tended to need the run when returning from a lengthy layoff in the past and preference is for BEACH POINT. William Knight's runner is also a C&D winner, having really impressed when scoring off 5lb lower here last summer, and he has scope for further improvement as a lightly-raced four-year-old. The returning Bobacious has slipped to a fair mark and completes the shortlist.

The Verdict comprises ALWAYS A STAR and Universal Story who both look interesting now switched to handicap level.

El Cairos can feature having finished a respectable fifth in the Grade 1 bumper at Cheltenham last month. Willie Mullins trained the winner of that contest and he is represented by GREEN SPLENDOUR, who gave a good account of himself in a Grade 2 bumper at Leopardstown in February, when giving the impression this extra furlong would bring further improvement. The latter is taken to reverse Leopardstown running with Koktail Brut, while Joseph O'Brien sends Le Labo over from Ireland on the back of a winning debut at Thurles. Scope To Improve added to his point-to-point victory with a debut success under Rules at Naas, and Quaviste is worth noting for the Skelton yard.

Cheltenham fifth El Cairos is of obvious interest but a chance is taken on LE LABO, a rare British bumper runner for his trainer.

Eased 1lb for his troubles and upped a furlong in distance, the son of Starspangledbanner can progress and repel the likely challenge of Packetofbiscuits, who arrives having been narrowly denied at Kempton on his last two starts. Risk is also noted.

His ability isn't in doubt and, granted some luck in running, this may be the day for the aptly-named RISK. Tolerance is next best.

Michael Bell has his string in fine form and the Newmarket handler could add to his tally here with DORNEY LAKE, who initiated a quick-fire double when landing a C&D maiden in style last May and he has slipped to an attractive mark ahead of his seasonal debut. North View was narrowly denied a double off this mark when last seen at Kempton in September and another bold bid beckons if he's fully wound up for his reappearance. Recent Newcastle scorer Harry Did has match-fitness on his side and must be feared.

Rhythmic Acclaim is respected but the candidate with the most potential is NORTH VIEW (nap) who can make a winning reappearance.

LAST SHAMARDAL is likely to prove competitive now handicapping for the first time. Jack Channon's charge produced a strong finish to win a maiden over 6f at Newcastle last month and is expected to thrive over this extra distance. Invincible Melody has been thereabouts in both starts in handicaps and it could be a similar story here, while Moby Quick shaped well when second at Newcastle and can make his presence felt.

Last Shamardal brings obvious potential to his handicap debut but he's drawn wide and INVINCIBLE MELODY may be the answer.

The Poacher Daly won a course-and-distance maiden last October and while well held in a subsequent handicap, returns following a break and for a new yard. Distillate is another C&D winner but was well held on her recent reappearance.

Appleblossomwhite has stepped forward nicely in recent outings and is likely to play a significant role in proceedings once again. Herkeios and Squires Treaty can fight it out for the minor honours.

Topweight PRIVATE ISLAND got up close home to make a winning handicap debut last week and can improve again over this longer trip.

CURTIZ ran well in defeat when finishing second at Chelmsford on his return from a break. That should have sharpened him up and another good account looks assured from Hughie Morrison's charge. Susiesparkle has been in fine form at Newcastle and is not out of it, while City Escape can usually be relied on to run her race at this venue.

Susiesparkle looks booked for another big run but this is a marked drop in grade for the well-handicapped C&D winner BOASTY.

LUKER'S TIPPLE wasn't disgraced in the Fred Winter at Cheltenham and might be worth another chance on his return to Flat duty. The selection showed ability when finishing sixth at the Curragh last November and should compete on the drying ground. Toto Too is a capable type and was rated 133 over hurdles. So Scottish's recent form in good races has been ordinary and he contests his first Flat race.

This could be all about ORCHID, though, as she sports a first-time tongue-tie on her return to action and was really impressive on her final start as a juvenile when scoring at Kempton effortlessly in September.

A trappy race in which NEYTIRI TE TSKAHA is taken to build on her promising stable debut now back over 6f.

ALIOSKI kept on powerfully over 1m4f at Southwell last time out when second and, although an infrequent winner, the return to further should really help. Two Plus Two has remained in good form since winning off 2lb lower over C&D in January so must be respected, and it would come as no surprise if the lightly-raced Courageous Gold found some improvement.

Zooks looks sure to be involved once more but TWO PLUS TWO challenged wide enough when runner-up here on Tuesday and is preferred.
