Race 1: 14:00 Worcester dragonbet.co.uk - Best Odds Guaranteed Handicap Chase (0-110) (4) 4yo+ GB 2m 110y
(3) Mix Of Clover | | | | | | 10 | Murray Dodd | Alastair Ralph | Kept on gamely to cause 20-1 surprise over C&D (good) in July and bounced back from two poor runs to win at 33-1 at Bangor (2m1f, good; refitted cheekpieces) this month; recent 4lb rise is not excessive but he's hard to predict, and today's forecast slower ground is probably not ideal. |
(9) Tonto Foley | | | | | | 6 | Jack Tudor | Christian Williams | Progressive 6yo who just did enough at Perth (2m, good) in July and has now won three chases this year (one was on soft ground); didn't fire at Newton Abbot last month but remains of interest. |
(1) Playtogetaway | | | | | | 6 | Jonjo O'Neill Jr | Jonjo & A J O'Neill | 2-10 over hurdles, with one win gained over 2m here; makes chasing debut from good mark but was not at best on latest outing one month ago and will have something to prove if the ground is slower than good to soft. |
(6) Omaha Wish | | | | | | 6 | Harry Skelton | Dan Skelton | Fell in her latest chase and was never competitive when switched back to hurdling four weeks ago but she looked good when winning at Fakenham (2m, good) in June and is still very lightly raced over fences. |
(2) Redbridge Rambler | | | | | | 6 | Sean Bowen | Martin Keighley | In good form over hurdles when last seen in the spring, most notably when winning at Ascot (2m7f, good); might have future over fences but this chasing debut comes after a 144-day break and the drip back to 2m is not an obvious move. |
(7) Mary | | | | | | 5 | Charlie Todd | Ian Williams | Back in good form over hurdles since fitted with a tongue-tie this summer, most notably when scoring at Stratford (2m, good to firm) two starts ago; contender if she jumps adequately on today's chasing debut; raced mainly on good ground but was placed in a soft-ground bumper. |
(10) Moodofthemoment | | | | | | 7 | Stan Sheppard | Matt Sheppard | Won three points during the spring and has finished second in two C&D chases (both on good ground) for new stable in recent weeks; went up 5lb for the latter run but won't mind of the ground turns soft today and is likely to make his presence felt again. |
(11) Mutual Respect | | | | | | 8 | Kevin Brogan | Billy Aprahamian | Came good over fences in three-runner race at Uttoxeter (2m, good to soft) last summer and made the frame over C&D on next two outings; well handicapped on those exploits and returned from long layoff with fairly encouraging run here this month; contender if that recent outing brought him on. |
(8) Delpotro | | | | | | 4 | Lilly Pinchin | Charlie Longsdon | 2-3 over fences in France, with both wins gained from the front in 2m1f claimers on slow ground in the spring; no surprise if he makes a bold bid on today's British/handicap debut; usual tongue-tie left off. |
(5) Lermoos Legend | | | | | | 9 | James Bowen | Peter & Michael Bowen | In the frame five consecutive times since returned to chasing in June, the last twice at Cartmel towards end of last month; versatile regarding trip/ground and ought to be right in the thick of things again. |
(4) Jeudidee | | | | | | 5 | Ciaran Gethings | Kim Bailey | Bumper and dual hurdle winner; seemed to going well before falling at third-last fence on chasing debut at Stratford (2m1f, good) in June and was in contention before slipping and almost falling at third-last fence over C&D (good) last month; can feature if he avoids mishap today; hood added. |
Cases can be made for several of these but top of the list is four-time point winner MOODOFTHEMOMENT (nap), who ran well in defeat over C&D on his first two starts for Matt Sheppard and was one of two to go clear of the others when losing out only by a neck on the latter occasion. Lermoos Legend scores good marks for his consistency in recent months and is second choice, while Omaha Wish could still have quite a bit more to offer over fences.[Chris Wilson]
Race 2: 14:35 Worcester Bob Love King Of The Dirt Novices' Chase (GBB Race) GB 2m 7f
(3) Jesuitique | | | | | | 9 | Charlie Hammond | Dr Richard Newland & Jamie Insole | Five-time hurdle winner who made the frame in all three chases, most recently when third in Durham National at Sedgefield (3m5f, soft) last October; has fitness to prove here, though, and is not favoured by the weights. |
(2) An Tailliur | | | | | | 8 | Jonjo O'Neill Jr | Jonjo & A J O'Neill | Very useful handicap hurdler with good strike-rate (7-17) but, following a long absence, made rather disappointing chase debut when remote second in three-runner race at Stratford (2m6f, good to firm) last month; today's slower ground ought to suit him better but, even so, he needs to have taken significant benefit from that recent outing. |
(4) Weveallbeencaught | | | | | | 7 | Jack Tudor | Christian Williams | Has not really delivered on the promise he showed when winning a Cheltenham maiden hurdle for Nigel Twiston-Davies in January 2023 and was 0-5 over fences last season; however, today's race represents an ease in grade and it will be interesting to see what Christian Williams can do with him. |
(5) Coco Mademoiselle | | | | | | 6 | Harry Skelton | Dan Skelton | Irish point winner who quickly developed into a fairly useful novice hurdler last season; absent since her second at Ayr (3m, soft) in April but connections are evidently keen to switch her to fences; respected. |
(1) Hometown Boy | | | | | | 9 | Ciaran Gethings | Stuart Edmunds | Very useful handicap hurdler a few years ago; lightly raced in the meantime but got his act together over fences three months ago, winning readily by 10l over C&D (good), and ought to be better suited by today's forecast slower ground; major player. |
Dan Skelton's low-mileage mare Coco Mademoiselle looks a very good prospect for novice chases this season but the most obvious answer is HOMETOWN BOY, who dominated a C&D handicap on his latest outing three months ago.[Chris Wilson]
Race 3: 15:10 Worcester Caremark Maiden Hurdle (GBB Race) GB 2m 4f
(5) Jour d'Orage | | | | | | 5 | James Best | Simon Earle | Losing two shoes didn't help, but still didn't lay down much of a marker on last month's hurdling debut (C&D, good); lots more needed. |
(3) Get Cracking | | | | | | 6 | David Bass | Robbie Llewellyn | 2m5f Kingston Blount maiden winner in May (good) and the follow-up effort was sound, but the tongue tie used both times is off here; family full of hurdles winners, and should find his level in handicaps later. |
(6) Knock On Wood | | | | | | 7 | Bryan Carver | D Summersby | Won a 2m4f Dorset maiden point for Dean Summersby in March (good to soft) before limitations were exposed up in grade; nephew of a dual novice hurdle winner at this sort of trip, but percentage call is to watch. |
(4) Holy Legend | | | | | | 5 | Adam Wedge | Alexandra Dunn | Mixed bag in bumpers, but a 19l third on July's hurdles debut (2m, soft) was no disgrace, considering he jumped novicey and once again fought the rider; may be able to upgrade if doing the basics better. |
(9) Zmiinyi | | | | | | 6 | Ciaran Gethings | Kim Bailey | Might have won his final Irish point start (3m, good to yielding) but for mistakes; weakening efforts on both 2m4f hurdles starts last autumn, but given time and a wind operation since; check for market confidence. |
(11) Scintillante | | | | | | 4 | Jonathan Burke | Alastair Ralph | Almost got up in a 2m maiden here at the start of the month (good) before posting a modest handicap debut; busiest of any of these this summer and vulnerable to more upwardly mobile types; new trip also. |
(8) Typhoon Flyer | | | | | | 6 | Luke Scott | Dr Richard Newland & Jamie Insole | Placed in all three bumpers; 4l third on May's Ffos Las hurdles debut (2m4f, good) was gained despite pulling, hanging left and making errors, and likely capable of better if helping himself rather more. |
(1) Better Off Alone | | | | | | 5 | Sean Bowen | Martin Keighley | Close second in the latter of two Irish points (3m, yielding) ten months apart; some interest on paper, hailing from the family of Riverside Theatre and with 2m-2m5f hurdles scorers among the dam's siblings. |
(10) Gwennie May Star | | | | | | 4 | Harry Skelton | Dan Skelton | Laid a good marker in a deep sales Newbury bumper on debut, but couldn't justify warm support at Bangor after (good); plenty of encouragement for hurdling on the dam's side, if much of it over sub-2m4f trips. |
(12) Micronormous | | | | | | 6 | Jack Tudor | David Pipe | Uneven hurdling profile, but recent 2m7f maiden third here (good) was a grand effort considering the preceding 16-month absence; didn't quite last home there, so drop in trip and tongue-tie make sense; player. |
(2) Chancycourt | | | | | | 8 | Connor Brace | Fergal O'Brien | Back to around his best on June's second of 14 at Southwell (2m4.5f, good), albeit hanging left for pressure; jumping mishaps either side of that effort have underlined his status of capable but risky. |
(7) Potters Charm | | | | | | 5 | Sam Twiston-Davies | Nigel Twiston-Davies | Strong at the finish when second in his sole Irish point (3m, yielding), and even more so on March's most impressive stable/bumper debut at Ffos Las (heavy); 2m5f-2m6f winners over hurdles in the immediate family, and looks a big player set a realistic task switched to this discipline. |
That POTTERS CHARM's pointing second and impressive bumper score were both gained around galloping left-handed tracks augurs well ahead of the very realistic-looking hurdling debut assignment that awaits here. The drop back in trip and added tongue-tie look the way to go with Micronormous and she's next most fancied, whilst works in progress such as Typhoon Flyer and Zmiinyi could take a leap forward.[Jeremy Grayson]
Race 4: 15:45 Worcester Dragonbet Fixed Brush Hurdle Series Final Novices' Handicap Hurdle (GBB Race) GB 2m 4f
(14) Haarar | | | | | | 5 | Jonathan England | Sam England | Fair Flat racer who won two novice hurdles in May (2m, good/2m1f, soft); last of seven when upped to 2m4f for handicap debut in June, though, and has not fired on the Flat lately; others have much less to prove. |
(15) Captain Attridge | | | | | | 6 | James Turner | Henry Oliver | Scored at Hereford (2m, good) in May and was placed on next three outings (all 2m good) but ran as though something was amiss last month and needs today's longer trip to unlock some improvement; 2lb wrong. |
(7) Light Fandango | | | | | | 5 | Brian Hughes | Neil Mulholland | Delivered on promise shown in Ireland when comfortable winner of Uttoxeter novice (2m, soft) for new stable in July; remains unexposed but last month's C&D run was a shade disappointing. |
(9) Shengai Enki | | | | | | 5 | Luke Scott | Dr Richard Newland & Jamie Insole | Showed his versatility in the spring, winning at Uttoxeter (2m7f, soft; handicap) and here (2m, good; novice), but ran poorly on latest appearance and needs to respond well to the addition of cheekpieces today. |
(12) Full Monty | | | | | | 6 | Jonathan Burke | Fergal O'Brien | Opened account with comfortable maiden win at Uttoxeter (2m4f, good) in July; behind Letterston Lily and Ebony Warrior when a weakening fourth over C&D (good) last month but has a tongue-tie fitted for this handicap debut and is open to improvement. |
(10) New Order | | | | | | 6 | Gavin Sheehan | Charlie Longsdon | 0-5 over hurdles; ran big race when second at Market Rasen (2m4f, good to soft; first-time tongue-tie) in April but was rather wayward in the closing stages there and his next run was disappointing; makes handicap debut after 143-day break; others look much less risky. |
(8) Ebony Warrior | | | | | | 6 | Kielan Woods | David Killahena & Graeme McPherson | Won readily over 2m here in July, his second hurdling start, and ran well in defeat behind Letterston Lily when upped to 2m4f here last month; probably still has more to offer but is not yet proven on ground slower than good and others in this line-up have more compelling form. |
(11) Jacobs Acre | | | | | | 6 | Sam Twiston-Davies | Neil Mulholland | Placed on first two hurdling starts (1m7f/2m) and displayed improvement when upped to 2m3f for recent handicap debut at Bangor, where he travelled strongly before asserting on the run-in; moves up from Class 5 today but seems versatile ground-wise and probably still has more improvement to come. |
(4) Bob Bob Ricard | | | | | | 6 | Jonjo O'Neill Jr | Jonjo & A J O'Neill | Returned to form with two handicap chase wins in the spring (one over 2m4f here) then made up significant ground in home straight to give Fine Margin a scare in C&D novice hurdle in July; seems versatile regarding ground and may still be on the upgrade; shortlisted. |
(13) Letterston Lily | | | | | | 4 | Sean Bowen | Peter & Michael Bowen | Bumper winner who is 2-3 over hurdles, having battled well to fend off Ebony Warrior in C&D (good) novice last month; almost certainly needs improvement to win a race this competitive on handicap debut, though. |
(6) Flying Fortune | | | | | | 5 | James Bowen | Peter & Michael Bowen | Came good over hurdles at sixth attempt, in Class 3 Market Rasen handicap (2m4f, good) in July, and did not need to be at her best to follow up in C&D novice (good) last month; versatile regarding ground but others in this line-up may have more potential. |
(1) Fine Margin | | | | | | 7 | Kieran Callaghan | W P Mullins | Very creditable second in major handicap at Haydock (3m, good to soft) on stable debut last November and 3-3 since returned to novice company this season (2m3f-2m4f, good); may not be favoured if the ground turns soft but still commands respect. |
(3) Mostly Sunny | | | | | | 5 | Harry Skelton | Dan Skelton | 2-5 over hurdles; creditable fourth in Summer Hurdle at Market Rasen (2m, good; also has form on soft) on latest outing in July and his Flat stamina strongly suggests today's step up in trip will suit; likely contender. |
(5) Seeyouinmydreams | | | | | | 6 | Freddie Gingell | Paul Nicholls | Headstrong mare who flopped badly on hurdling debut last November but, with hood fitted, returned from break with two wide-margin wins this spring (2m4f/2m, good); has a lot more on her plate today and her free-going tendencies remain a serious concern but it's hard to gauge how good she is. |
(2) Backmersackme | | | | | | 5 | Donagh Meyler | Emmet Mullins | Point/bumper winner who was not disgraced in Grade 1 novice on hurdle debut at Punchestown (3m, good to yielding) in May; well below that form on both subsequent hurdling starts and his recent Flat form is also uninspiring but he remains very unexposed, and his Irish stable is always feared in valuable Britsh races; sports first-time cheekpieces for handicap debut. |
Emmet Mullins' BACKMERSACKME was an unplaced odds-on favourite when qualifying for this series final and is tricky to weigh up at present but he was quite impressive in a Cork bumper in April and just about held his own in a Grade 1 novice hurdle one month later. His Irish stable's prowess when valuable prizes are up for grabs is well known, and he needs to be taken very seriously. His compatriot Fine Margin has won his last three and is second choice, while Mostly Sunny, Bob Bob Ricard and Jacobs Acre are the most appealing of the British-trained runners.[Chris Wilson]
Race 5: 16:20 Worcester AW Lumb 60th Anniversary Handicap Hurdle (0-120) (4) 4yo+ GB 2m 7f
(3) Dorrells Pierji | | | | | | 11 | Bryan Carver | D Summersby | 5-6 in points for Dean Summersby in the first half of 2024; status back below his last winning hurdles mark of June 2022 owes something to a below-par chase seventh here last time, however. |
(8) Gaelic Park | | | | | | 8 | David Bass | Charlie Longsdon | Irish point and Warwick bumper/2m5f hurdles winner with cut, but beaten 25l or more in all handicaps when completing; returns from five months out on another new career-low mark but with plenty to prove. |
(9) Fame And Fun | | | | | | 7 | Freddie Gingell | Paul Nicholls | March's Plumpton chase win (2m4f, good) has proved a bit of a false dawn, form and then jumping having deserted him; confidence boost likely sought here, and at least he's 3lb below his last winning hurdles mark. |
(1) Tiger Orchid | | | | | | 9 | Luke Scott | Dr Richard Newland & Jamie Insole | 5-10 at Worcester, and no shame in finding things too much from well out of the weights in a de facto 0-160 chase here last month (C&D); 2lb lower than for June's C&D chase win, and no ground issues. |
(5) Lutinebella | | | | | | 8 | Fern O'Brien | Fergal O'Brien | Dual mares' novice winner (2m2.5f, good and 2m5f, soft) in the 2022-23 season and not overraced since; ready for this long a trip if last time's Stratford fourth is any guide, and she's on an ever tastier mark. |
(7) Harjo | | | | | | 7 | Sean Bowen | Charlie Longsdon | Back to the mark of last December's Wincanton chase success (2m4f, soft), having not progressed in the meantime; yet to convince fully over as far as today's trip outside of Irish points, but this return to a left-handed track looks worth a go having shifted that way the last twice. |
(6) Made For You | | | | | | 9 | Connor Brace | John & Rhys Flint | Consistent under both codes since joining the Flints, narrowly missing out at Uttoxeter (2m, soft) in July; similarly close second the last time a stayers' trip was tried in March 2023 off 6lb higher; chance. |
(4) Tiger Jet | | | | | | 8 | Mr Jamie Neild | Jennie Candlish | Last month's all-the-way Cartmel win (2m6f, heavy) on stable debut garnered a new personal best RPR on his 18th hurdles start; back on a mark he's been held off in the past, but confidence high and no ground issues. |
(2) Earth Cry | | | | | | 6 | Dylan Johnston | Neil Mulholland | On the go since February but not flagging, winning three (2m3f-2m6f, good) and setting a new peak RPR last time; still hitting the line strongly, so the 8lb rise for his latest Fontwell score concerns the most. |
It's perhaps fair to say her hurdling career hasn't hit the heights her bumper form suggested it might, but LUTINEBELLA continues to drift down the weights appealingly and a stayers' trip looked worth a go last time. Earth Cry's ceiling may still not have been reached, but in the face of a stiff 8lb hike preferred alternatives to the selection comprise Worcester fan Tiger Orchid and the back up in trip Made For You, in reverse order. [Jeremy Grayson]
Race 6: 16:55 Worcester Dragonbet - Real Bookmakers Conditional Jockeys' Handicap Hurdle (0-110) (4) 3yo+ GB 2m
(7) Max's Champ | | | | | | 8 | Ned Fox | Samuel Drinkwater | Form took a dive switched to handicaps last autumn/winter over this and longer trips; mark never lower, but he can only be watched returning from almost nine months out. |
(9) Uncle Arthur | | | | | | 6 | Philip Armson | Sarah-Jayne Davies | C&D bumper scorer here in June 2022 (good) but essentially a very ordinary performer for three top yards before too tough an ask on debut for his latest trainer last time (class 3 chase); wind surgery since. |
(2) Douglas Dc | | | | | | 6 | Freddie Gordon | Tony Carroll | Hard to look past on 2022's peak win and placed efforts for Gordon Elliott, but couldn't carry recent good cheer over from the Flat when offering little at Stratford earlier in the month. |
(1) Byzantine Empire | | | | | | 7 | Taylor Fisher | John & Rhys Flint | Over 8l clear of Dog Fox when landing another C&D 0-110 in July (good); still fabulously handicapped on his summer 2022 best but appeared to find this 6lb higher mark beyond him last month, and another poor Flat run last time needs forgiving also. |
(8) Razzo Italiano | | | | | | 7 | Shane Fenelon | Peter & Michael Bowen | Still on a winning mark despite a rise for this month's Stratford selling handicap success for Gary Hanmer (2m3f, good), one which reiterated his greater effectiveness around sharp tracks; stable debut. |
(5) Dunbulcan Bay | | | | | | 5 | Tristan Durrell | Dan Skelton | Refusal to settle found him out up Cartmel's run-in latest (2m6f, good to soft), and whilst that was an improved effort his perfect trip perhaps isn't clear yet; initial mark at least makes sense on that effort. |
(4) Dog Fox | | | | | | 4 | Toby Wynne | Oliver Greenall & Josh Guerriero | Easy winner of a Bangor novice handicap off 7lb lower in June (2m1f, good), but progressive hurdling profile stalled over this C&D latest, making mistakes once already held by Byzantine Empire; has won on slow ground, but may not prefer it (missed an engagement due to it in July). |
(3) Cavern Club | | | | | | 4 | Jack Hogan | James Owen | No match for an officially 119-rated fellow penalised rival in a Stratford novice latest, albeit he neither settled nor jumped optimally; mark is no gift but he remains of interest, and he won't mind any rain having appeared happier granted cut for his Cartmel maiden success previously. |
Trappy. Dog Fox's C&D defeat to Byzantine Empire (held himself since) in July appeared to owe at least as much to the revised mark as late mistakes. CAVERN CLUB and Dunbulcan Bay (next best) need to settle better to progress now, but neither appears averse to give underfoot and the former knows what's required to win races. [Jeremy Grayson]
