2Sean D BowenJames Owen14th foal; Pinatubo half-brother to 11 winners including James Garfield (6f/7f including 2yo Group 2; RPR 119), The Shrew (7.4f turf 2yo/1m AW; 102), Eva Maria (1m-1m2f; 98) and Morag McCullagh (6f AW; 94); dam 6f/7f 2yo winner (103); late foal; connections have had one useful 2yo win on debut this term.
(3) Kingmaker
2Oisin MurphyAndrew Balding200,000gns yearling; tenth foal; Camelot half-brother to winners Zghorta Dance (1m1f/9.5f including 2yo/Group 3; RPR 105), Hangisi (1m4f; 68) and Vingtcoeurs (French 1m3f Flat/2m5f chase); dam 1m2f winner, out of 12.5f Listed winner; from strong yard, the market should be instructive.
3rd (1) Devil's Advocate
2Kieran ShoemarkJohn & Thady Gosden350,000gns yearling; third foal; Too Darn Hot half-brother to 1m/1m2f winner Inquiring Minds (RPR 95); dam 1m-1m6f winner (including 2yo/Group 3; 104), sister to 1m4f winners Jane Marple and Tamilla, closely related to useful 8.6f winner Vanity Rules; powerful connections and needs a market check.
2nd (5) Present Times
2James DoyleCharlie Appleby625,000gns yearling by Sea The Stars; first foal; dam 7f-1m1f winner (including 2yo/Group 3; RPR 111), sister to 1m2f winner Order Of Malta, half-sister to smart 1m 2yo/1m2f winner Matsuri, out of 1m/9.4f Listed winner; gelded; probably stable second string to Naval Command.
(4) Naval Command
2William BuickCharlie Appleby300,000gns foal, 360,000gns yearling; sixth foal; Lope De Vega half-brother to winners Eldar Eldarov (1m-14.5f including 2yo/St Leger; RPR 117), Kingswood (1m2f; 106) and A La Voile (1m-1m2f; 102); dam French 1m2f/1m3f winner (including Listed; 111) out of 1m4f Group 1 winner; Group 1 Futurity entry.
1st (6) Seacruiser
2Rossa RyanRalph Beckett200,000gns yearling by Sea The Stars; dam maiden half-sister to winners Across The Stars (1m4f Group 2), Bronze Cannon (1m4f Group 2) and Valiant Girl (US 1m1f Grade 3); fifth of ten in maiden at Goodwood (1m, good) 23 days ago was fair form and he started favourite, so better was seemingly expected; the third and fourth have boosted the form with wins since.

Holding the Group 1 entry in a month's time and looking the Appleby stable first string today, NAVAL COMMAND appears the most likely winner. Seacruiser failed to justify favouritism at Goodwood and although it was fair form and he is the only one with racing experience, there may be greater threats to the selection from fellow Godolphin-owned newcomers Devil's Advocate (who is Gosden trained) and Present Times.[Richard Austen]

4th (7) Charming Fellow
2Hollie DoylePeter Chapple-HyamUnraced on softer than good; well beaten at triple-digit odds in all three 7f maidens this summer, racing prominently for a fair way in the last two; needs much better on this handicap debut.
(5) Flying Fortress
2Sean D BowenJames OwenUnraced on softer than good; similar form on his last three starts, second of six to a runaway, odds-on winner in 1m1f maiden at Yarmouth nine days ago; needs markedly better on this nursery debut.
(6) Jack Andrea
2Oisin MurphyRobert EdderyFive-race maiden, best when second of nine on nursery debut at Salisbury (1m, good to firm) on penultimate start; his lesser show at Sandown last time came on soft going; cheekpieces are enlisted.
3rd (4) Gap Year
2Charles BishopEve Johnson HoughtonHas reached the frame on all four starts, up with his best form when fourth of 11 in novice at Windsor on step up to 1m last time; unraced on softer than good; goes handicapping and lack of improvement since debut is a concern.
(3) Louie The Legend
2Ray DawsonDylan CunhaMarked progress in this three 7f maidens, always prominent to win a 16-runner race at Chepstow (good to soft) on turf debut; further improvement looks likely over 1m on this nursery debut.
2nd (1) Celeborn
2Billy LoughnaneGeorge Boughey5-4 favourite at Leicester (7f, good to soft) in June and got the job done despite zig-zagging across the track; upset in the stalls (withdrawn) in July and was gelded before his never-nearer third of 12 in novice at Salisbury (1m, good to soft) 13 days ago; brings potential to nurseries at 1m+.
1st (2) Olympus Point
2William BuickCharlie ApplebySimilar form for minor honours in two 7f novice events at Haydock and one at Thirsk, all on good ground; shaped last time as if he would stay 1m and this does not look a bad mark for handicap debut.

The top three may bring the most potential, in which case it would be best to concentrate on them. CELEBORN is unexposed after only two races but he's already shown that he will stay the trip well, so he gets he vote ahead of the promising Chepstow winner Louie The Legend, with Olympus Point third on the list.[Richard Austen]

(6) Geologist
3Oisin MurphyAmy MurphyGroup 3-placed and Listed winner in Europe as 2yo (both about 7f on soft); has fallen between a few stools this year and off since a heavy defeat in the German 1,000 Guineas in May (first-time blinkers replaced cheekpieces, which return today); has it to prove back over 6f after a break.
5th (3) Pinafore
4Tom MarquandWilliam HaggasHandles most surfaces; big improver at 6f in 2023 but high hopes for this year have dissipated somewhat, having run well below what she's capable of in two runs since returning to form at Musselburgh in June; first-time blinkers replaced cheekpieces last time out, now goes in a visor; hard to assess.
1st (4) Sophia's Starlight
4Sam JamesGrant TuerFront-runs; big improver as 3yo and Funny Story (now worse off at the weights) had to work to get past her in C&D Listed race (soft) last October; ran to similar level at Haydock in May but on the back burner since, on turf and AW; healthy squeak if all is well back from 11-week break.
2nd (5) Executive Decision
4Saffie OsborneJamie OsborneImproved as 3yo, her two wins coming over 6f on good to soft (Sophia's Starlight was runner-up with a slipping saddle in the first); not yet back to best this year but she took part in a strong race at Ascot last time and is well treated again now.
(2) Kinta
4Billy LoughnaneGeorge BougheySparingly raced since 2022 and was having only her second run in nearly a year when winning this (good to firm) 12 months ago; high-class 6f form on AW since, last November and in March (tongue-tie added and retained) but she lacks a recent run and is unraced on ground slower than good.
3rd (7) Dance And Romance
3Hollie DoyleAndrew BaldingUnraced as 2yo but she had a good thing going in 6f handicaps this summer, winning at Nottingham (good to soft) and involved in a tight finish at Glorious Goodwood (good to firm); was a very short price at York since but she just wasn't the same filly; needs to put that behind her.
4th (1) Funny Story
4Rossa RyanRalph BeckettSmart 6f form in 2023, including when heading Sophia's Starlight close home in C&D Listed race (soft) last October; winless since but as good as ever in Listed races in May (both on good); badly hampered at Chester next time and although her July course run since needs forgiving she hadn't been at her best before winning here last year; every chance of a good run.

Last year's winner Kinta has tended to improve for a run following a break and worsening ground would add further uncertainty. FUNNY STORY has more going for her with rain about and it could pay to gloss over her latest defeat as her earlier form suggests she should be very competitive on her C&D defeat of Sophia's Starlight last autumn. The latter has a useful pull in the weights and is second choice although she does need to return in better form than she was in immediately before her break. Pinafore and Dance And Romance are very capable but weren't themselves on their most recent starts while Executive Decision has not yet recaptured her 3yo form in a brief campaign this year.[Emily Weber]

6th (2) Balzarini
2Sean LeveyStuart WilliamsFair form in sprint races at Windsor (good to firm) in July; finished behind Assertively upped to 7f in Germany most recently and faces a difficult task in this stronger race for the level.
5th (1) Assertively
2Clifford LeeK R Burke5f winner (on soft ground) in the spring; fairly useful RPRs since upped to 7f but was beaten favourite in German Group 3 most recently and this is a stiffer assignment for the grade.
(4) Huscal
2Jason WatsonCharles HillsAll starts over 6f on good/firmer; showed promise at Glorious Goodwood and has since won a couple of races in the north, latest at Thirsk where he beat 16 rivals; likely to stay this longer trip; improving colt.
1st (7) The Waco Kid
2Oisin MurphyHugo PalmerYet to encounter ground softer than good; has largely progressive RPRs; ran well in the Richmond Stakes (6f Group 2) three outings back; good third in Doncaster Listed event (7f) latest and ties in closely with Symbol Of Honour on that effort; possibilities.
2nd (3) Diego Ventura
2James DoyleHamad Al JehaniBrings a 2-2 profile, having won 6f events at Naas (for Gavin Cromwell) and Ascot (overcame a tardy start, led final strides) on yielding/soft; gives the impression this extra furlong will suit; has potential and is interesting upped in class.
4th (6) Symbol Of Honour
2William BuickCharlie ApplebyUnraced on going softer than good; gelded after his solid sixth in the Coventry; close second, despite being rather isolated towards the far side, in Doncaster Listed event (7f) on return from three-month absence; continues to show improvement and commands respect.
3rd (5) Monumental
2Ryan MooreA P O'BrienYet to encounter ground softer than good; Ballydoyle colt who has progressive form despite needing headgear (blinkered since second run); went close in only a substandard Champagne Stakes at Doncaster (7f Group 2) most recently but still brings the best rating to this race.

The biggest form contenders are the three progressive sorts who performed well at Doncaster's St Leger meeting this month. MONUMENTAL brings the highest rating and gets the vote but closely matched opponents Symbol Of Honour (narrow second choice) and The Waco Kid are certainly feared with further improvement plausible. Diego Ventura and Huscal bring potential and add interest.[Steve Boow]

4th (3) Beamish
6Hollie DoyleArchie WatsonEx-Irish 6yo who saw no action in 2023; best effort this term when beaten a head at the Shergar Cup meeting at Ascot (2m, good; acts on soft) on penultimate start but this race demands much better.
(5) Drawn To Dream
4Saffie OsborneJamie Osborne2m4f, soft-ground Listed winner in Germany last September; good sixth of 16 in handicap at Royal Ascot (1m6f, good to firm) on stable/seasonal debut; well below that level in her next three starts since and her second at Salisbury 13 days ago came in a three-runner race, so failed to prove she'd returned to form; others look more solid.
3rd (4) Samui
5Jamie SpencerGordon ElliottSwitched to Flat this summer; won his Flat handicap debut at Killarney (2m1f) by 17l and runner-up with a smart effort at York (2m, again good to firm) last month; creditable third on the drop back to 1m6f for Listed race at Chester on latest start, with first-time cheekpieces (now discarded); needs better but return to 2m looks a big plus and he may still be open to progress.
(6) Night Sparkle
5Oisin MurphyAndrew BaldingIn career-best form when at 1m6f-2m this season for four seconds and a fourth; the last three of those races were Group 2s at Goodwood, York and Doncaster; has a little to find with second-placed Al Nayyir on the York result but again should have a serious role to play.
5th (7) Fighter
3Ryan MooreA P O'BrienTransformed with blinkers on the last two of his five starts, making all in 22-runner races for both a 1m2f maiden at the Curragh and valuable 1m5f handicap at Leopardstown (both on good ground); hugely on top in both and it's hard to say just how good he could become; this race demands much better form but he needs plenty of respect.
2nd (1) Harbour Wind
4Chris HayesD K WeldWon a Listed race over 1m6f last August and another over 1m4f this June; also twice runner-up in Group races at Longchamp over about 1m7f on softer than good, including 18 days ago; should give his running but others in this bring serious form and don't have to carry his penalty.
1st (2) Al Nayyir
6Kieran ShoemarkTom CloverHas spent most of his career in Dubai, with a chunk in France as well last year; smart in both, including two soft-ground Listed wins in France and his 66-1 second in the Dubai Gold Cup (2m, good) this March; debut for new yard in York Group 2 (2m, good) five weeks ago was right up with his best form, finishing strongly to go down by a short head; fine chance on that.

The level of achievement shown by AL NAYYIR (nap) in the Group 2 Lonsdale Cup at York last month is a shining recommendation at this lower level, so he gets the vote even though fourth-placed Night Sparkle reopposes on slightly better terms and has been reliability itself over staying distances this season. There is also a strong, three-pronged challenge from Ireland in the shape of Samui (third choice), Harbour Wind and Fighter.[Richard Austen]

(9) Screaming Eagle
3Daniel MuscuttIan Williams0-6 for Andrew Balding and well-beaten third of four over 1m4f on debut for new yard; fourth of 12 at Newmarket (1m2f) in May was his best show from four handicaps, staying on from the rear, so this trip may well be worth persevering with; wears headgear first time.
2nd (7) Macari
4Trevor WhelanSheena WestModest hurdles winner who has been placed in Class 5 handicaps over 1m2f on the Flat in his two races this month; 1m4f looks plausible but there's a suspicion he will prove vulnerable to one with more potential.
4th (8) Raja Raja
3Jamie SpencerDavid SimcockFair form and some improvement this April-June in his first three races; gelded and off 88 days before never in the picture on handicap debut at Doncaster (1m4f, good to soft; weak 10-1) two weeks ago; needs better but these are early days for him and he's worth a market check.
3rd (6) Don Simon
3Rossa RyanEd DunlopFair form in his three AW races at 1m, 1m3f and 1m4f; the last named was a strong novice event at Southwell and this late foal should be open to progress off what looks a reasonable mark for handicap/turf debut.
(5) Tryfan
3Tom MarquandBrian EllisonSome issues at the stalls this summer, including when he ran Baltic to a neck at Newcastle (1m4f, AW) on penultimate outing; there's more for him to prove on turf, albeit with his only two turf handicaps having been over 1m6f (latest the Melrose at York) rather than today's 1m4f.
(4) Candyman Stan
3Oisin MurphyAndrew BaldingShowed promise on good to soft on debut; second start (Kempton AW) was disappointing but he won by 9l when 1-6 in a maiden at Lingfield (1m4f, AW) 16 days ago, which seemed to represent improvement; unexposed handicap debutant who can't be ruled out.
1st (2) Wonder Kid
3Harry DaviesHugo PalmerWon in convincing style over 1m4f at Newbury (good to firm) and Newmarket (good) in this season's first two handicaps; beaten a head at the Newmarket July meeting (good) but never got into it at Ascot (fair sixth) on latest outing; needs to bounce back and resume improvement.
(3) Fighter Command
3Kieran ShoemarkJohn & Thady GosdenPlenty went wrong in the London Gold Cup in May, but he made all in a Windsor maiden (1m2f, good to soft) the time before and improved when front-running again in six-runner handicap at Newmarket (1m4f, good to firm) on latest start; gelded since and needs to find more again.
(1) Baltic
4James DoyleHarry CharltonUnbeaten since he went handicapping in cheekpieces, showing highly progressive form over about 1m4f at Pontefract, Doncaster, Yarmouth and twice at Newcastle; asked serious questions by Tryfan last time but kept finding to get up in the final strides; up another 4lb but it's very hard to rule out further improvement.

Baltic (second choice) has been racking up the wins and another has to be one of the most likely outcomes in this race. However, another chance is given to WONDER KID who was going great guns prior to his rather muted display nine weeks ago at Ascot. Candyman Stan is one of several unexposed candidates who have to be given a second look, while Fighter Command ran well over 1m4f at the Newmarket July course on his latest outing.[Richard Austen]

6th (2) Stockpyle
5Lewis EdmundsWilliam Muir & Chris GrassickRegistered a quick double when front-running in June but not so good since, particularly on latest start; needs to be at his peak to hold any win chance and even that may not be good enough.
4th (3) Bajan Bandit
4Oliver StammersGrant TuerLargely consistent 2023 campaign featured two wins; badly lost his form this spring and he was again among the backmarkers 12 days ago when returning from four months off; 9lb lower than reappearance but best watched.
3rd (13) Desperate Dan
3Ray DawsonPeter Chapple-HyamSecond in a Yarmouth maiden (dropped to 7f, good) in July; gelded before his 4l eighth of 11 on handicap debut at Newcastle (1m2f, AW) early this month and he was hampered over 1f out, so capable of better; improvement is still needed to win this, though.
(1) Repertoire
8Jamie SpencerDavid SimcockUsually consistent and he put a poor show behind him when fair third at Windsor (soft) on latest outing; less testing ground probably suits and he has a competitive mark judged on peak efforts in 2023 and 2024.
(10) Drink Dry
3Hollie DoyleMarco BottiWore cheekpieces on last five starts and did not need to improve to win a Beverley maiden (8.4f, good to firm) on second occasion; creditable third of six at Sandown (1m, good) on latest start was his best show in handicaps since but others look better handicapped.
8th (14) Lake Teo
3William BuickCharles HillsFair form on all five starts, the last three (one handicap) over about 1m2f, but she needs to find a fair bit extra for today's drop back in trip (first 1m race since debut) if she's to win off this mark.
(8) Island Bandit
5Jack MitchellHeather MainOften front-runner; six wins overall but he's not fired in his three runs this season (all when single-figure odds); dangerously handicapped should he do so this time and one of his best runs last term was at this track last September.
7th (4) Mr Baloo
3Sean LeveyRichard HannonWon twice on turf as a 2yo but has gained this year's two wins on AW at Kempton; something to find today judged on turf efforts in particular.
2nd (11) Pressure's On
3Rossa RyanEd DunlopSeventh start when winning a 7f AW novice last October; went down by a neck at Newmarket (7f, good) in April, form which he has not matched since and he did not convince for stamina when trying 1m on latest start.
(9) Where's Freddy
4Richard KingscoteStuart Williams2-2 on the Newmarket July course and he came within a neck of winning at this track five days ago; those races were over 7f but it wasn't the trip which beat him in two 1m placings; each-way appeal.
(6) Hieronymus
8Nicola CurrieGeorge BakerEmerged from the doldrums with his third on Kempton AW last time out; has a cracking chance on that form (9lb lower today) and on bits of turf form in previous seasons, although it's hard to ignore that his overall turf record is 0-22.
(7) Classic Encounter
3Billy LoughnaneGeorge BougheyThree runs for Charlie Appleby as a 2yo, runner-up twice; sold for 120,000gns this July and showed promise with his late headway from rear in 1m novice at Newcastle (AW) on recent reappearance; needs a close look on this handicap debut.
5th (5) Amsterdam
3Oisin MurphyEd WalkerFive-race maiden with three seconds, including from the front in handicaps at Ascot (7f, good) and York (1m, good to soft; six ran) on last two outings; improving but dictating the pace in this field should be more tricky.
1st (12) Terries Royale
4Tom MarquandMichael ApplebyProgressive; off the mark at Ascot this month and looked all over the winner over 2f out in the Legends race at Doncaster (again 1m on soft) nine days later, only to veer badly left over 1f out and get caught close home; looks capable of winning off this unchanged mark.

Unraced at two or three, TERRIES ROYALE has lately been a rising force in 1m handicaps and would surely have won his last two races had he not veered so badly to the far rail last time in the Legends race at Doncaster. He gets the vote today despite a second eyecatching candidate in Classic Encounter, who found his stride in the closing stages of his debut for George Boughey and now makes his handicap debut. Where's Freddy should be seriously involved and is third on the list.[Richard Austen]
