Race 1: 14:20 Listowel Buckley Agri New Holland Irish EBF Mares Maiden Hurdle IRE 2m
(4) Firm Belief | | | | | | 6 | Phillip Enright | Rodger Sweeney | Fair stayer at a modest level on the Flat; won over 1m6f at Navan last October; no impact on hurdling debut at Killarney; will need further. |
(9) Little Lark | | | | | | 5 | Shane Fitzgerald | Michael C Griffin | 100-1 when tailed off first time out at Kilbeggan; safe to leave out of calculations. |
(13) Sweet Chestnut | | | | | | 5 | Jake Coen | Peter Fahey | Rider reported she hung left throughout when completely tailed off at Ballinrobe on debut. |
(2) Elafonisi | | | | | | 5 | John Shinnick | Terence O'Brien | Twice a beaten favourite when placed in point-to-points in the spring; jumping was a bit ragged on hurdling debut at Galway, beaten around 30l in tenth. |
(8) Light Of Life | | | | | | 6 | Sam Ewing | Peter Fahey | Excellent effort on debut in a Cork bumper behind Encanto Bruno in July 2022; absent for over two years after that run; well beaten in a bumper at Killarney; did not seem to handle the track on hurdling debut at Tramore; plenty to prove now. |
(3) Eugenious | | | | | | 5 | Philip Byrnes | Turlough O'Connor | Third foal; half-sister to 2m hurdle winner Urabamba; dam 2m AW winner, half-sister to useful chase winner Sandy Beach; from a small Cork stable; best watched on debut. |
(16) Chapter Thirty | | | | | | 4 | Tiernan Power Roche | Eoin Christopher McCarthy | 33-1 when last of 16 first time out in a bumper at Cork in May; can be ruled out. |
(7) Koo Star | | | | | | 5 | Oakley Brown | Liam G O'Brien | Tailed off in a Galway bumper on sole start for Tony Mullins last October; never a threat at Tramore last month on stable debut. |
(19) Our Girl Ellie | | | | | | 4 | J J Slevin | Stephen Ryan | First reserve; half-sister to a minor hurdle winner; dam a hurdle/chase winner for Tom Cooper, sister to useful chase winner A Rated. |
(17) Florida Taiga | | | | | | 4 | Peter Smithers | S M Duffy | Regressive Flat maiden; made little impact on hurdles debut at Galway; unlikely to feature. |
(15) Biddynora | | | | | | 4 | Evan Dwan | P M J Doyle | Fourth foal; dam French Listed-placed hurdle/chase winner; 7lb claimer aboard for a top point-to-point yard; likely to need experience. |
(20) The Reel Martello | | | | | | 4 | | Ms Margaret Mullins | Second reserve; good pedigree but likely to need more time judged on Wexford bumper run. |
3rd (11) Regards To Rose | | | | | | 5 | G B Noonan | Eoin Christopher McCarthy | Showed ability in point-to-points for this stable last season; won a mares' maiden at Loughrea; held every chance when carried out at Ballingarry; might prefer further. |
(6) Getawiggleon | | | | | | 7 | Danny Mullins | Michael Hourigan | Won on the Flat at Gowran last season and ran respectably in Listed company next time; yet to reach the first three in six starts over hurdles; looks vulnerable. |
4th (18) Kilbarry Ce Ce | | | | | | 4 | Cian Quirke | C O'Keeffe | Tenth foal; half-sister to five winners including the talented Journey With Me, eight-time scorer Yorkist, and the useful Silent Approach; dam unraced half-sister to high-class jumper Racing Demon; interesting prospect for his trainer/breeder. |
2nd (14) Vadsa Queen | | | | | | 6 | Daniel King | N Stokes | Won a good ground bumper at Tramore last year when trained by Willie Mullins; well beaten on first start for this trainer in a Kilbeggan mares' maiden hurdle; improved from that when fourth in a 1m6f maiden at Gowran in a first-time tongue-tie. |
(21) Mystical Goddess | | | | | | 5 | Darragh O'Keeffe | Henry De Bromhead | Third reserve; Sister to Lucinda Russell's smart hurdle/chase winner Giovinco; dam unraced half-sister to high-class hurdle/chase winner Rocky Creek and smart hurdle/chase winner Tell Massini; point-to-point winner at Ballyvodock in February for Michael Griffin; has joined a top stable. |
(12) Sansrisk | | | | | | 5 | Keith Donoghue | J P Dempsey | Consistent before winning a Downpatrick bumper in May; fair fourth in a winners' bumper at Punchestown in June; obtained useful hurdling experience in good company last season; chased home the smart Fun Fun Fun at Thurles; fifth in a 28-runner Leopardstown maiden. |
(10) Mexican Moonshine | | | | | | 5 | Jack Kennedy | Gordon Elliott | Made a promising debut when staying on for second behind a 104-rated winner at Ballinrobe; should be in the mix again with normal improvement. |
1st (1) Born In Purple | | | | | | 5 | Paul Townend | W P Mullins | Flat winner in France; runner-up in maiden hurdles at Tramore last August and Gowran the following month; second again, soundly beaten at Downpatrick on return; blundered badly two out at Down Royal last time and held in second when falling at the last; becoming expensive to follow. |
There is a temptation to give Born In Purple another chance but she is beginning to look limited. This looks like a reasonable opportunity for SANSRISK, a bumper winner who obtained useful hurdling experience last season. The once-raced Mexican Moonshine should also enter calculations. [Alan Sweetman]
Race 2: 14:55 Listowel Connolly's RED MILLS Irish EBF Auction Maiden Hurdle (IRE Incentive Race) IRE 2m
(9) On The Gandy Hop | | | | | | 4 | Daniel King | Denis Gerard Hogan | Made little impression when tailed off in a Ballinrobe maiden hurdle (2m2f, yielding to soft) on debut; impossible to recommend judged on that effort. |
(10) Chuck Bass | | | | | | 4 | Michael O'Sullivan | P A Fahy | Cost 5,500euros as a 3yo; ninth foal; half-brother to winners Platinumcard (1m1f/1m2f Flat, RPR 104; 2m hurdle) and Goldencard (2m-2m4f jumps); dam unraced half-sister to 2m4f hurdle winner Carlas Dream out of half-sister to useful 2m4f-3m jumps winner Limerick Leader; non-runner for Ballinrobe bumper in April (lame); stable yet to saddle a winner this season. |
4th (12) Spread Your Wings | | | | | | 4 | Peter Smithers | Padraig Roche | By a decent young sire from a smart family; had no luck in running on debut at Roscommon (2m, good) in June, hampered at the first and badly hampered four from home, unseating her rider; she was sent off 6-1 that day and could be worth another chance. |
(6) Wee Aloysius | | | | | | 5 | John Shinnick | Terence O'Brien | Cost 18,000euros as a 3yo; eighth foal; half-brother to winners Platinumcard (1m1f/1m2f, RPR 104; 2m hurdle) & Goldencard (2m-2m4f hurdle/chase); dam unraced half-sister to 2m4f hurdle winner Carlas Dream out of half-sister to useful 2m4f-3m jumps winner Limerick Leader; watch the market for clues. |
(5) Mister Persistence | | | | | | 4 | Mark McDonagh | E J O'Grady | Cost 14,000euros as a foal; 24,000euros 3yo; ninth foal; brother to point and Listed bumper winner Royal Infantry, half-brother to 3m hurdle winner Sovereign Gold; dam well beaten bumpers/2m3f hurdle, sister to useful 2m4f/3m hurdle winner Ballydub; market will guide. |
(8) Morning Nightcap | | | | | | 4 | Charlie O'Dwyer | J P Dempsey | Cost 16,000euros as a 3yo; third foal; half-brother to 2m/2m1f hurdle/chase winner Broomfield Bijou; dam French 2m2f chase winner, half-sister to high-class 2m-2m3f hurdle/chase winner Petit Robin and to dam of Gold Cup runner-up Anibale Fly; one to monitor closely. |
(7) Gather Yourself | | | | | | 4 | Jordan Gainford | Cian Collins | Solid efforts in a trio of bumpers; cut out much of the running when respectable fourth at Killarney (2m1f, good) in July; has a bit to find on hurdling debut but is the likely pace angle; each-way possibilities. |
(13) Thisistheway | | | | | | 5 | James O'Sullivan | Yvonne Latta | Wexford bumper (yielding to soft) winner last August; well beaten behind Aurora Vega in Listed Gowran bumper a month later; big run when beaten 9l in sixth behind Familiar Dreams in Punchestown festival bumper on return in May; big contender if she takes to hurdles. |
3rd (11) Herbies Rover | | | | | | 4 | G B Noonan | Eoin Christopher McCarthy | Remote sixth on debut in Tipperary contest won by Salvator Mundi in May; faced stiff opposition next time when fifth at Ballinrobe when sent off 200-1; needs to improve but this is by far his easiest assignment to date and the yard target this festival. |
(4) Half Montlioux | | | | | | 7 | Phillip Enright | T J O'Mara | Showed some ability on belated debut at Cork last month and built on that when staying on into a remote second in a Kilbeggan maiden hurdle (2m3f, yielding) latest when sent off 80-1; drop in trip on a sharp track might not be ideal. |
2nd (2) De Temps En Temps | | | | | | 5 | Keith Donoghue | Gavin Cromwell | Cost 11,000euros as a foal; 22,000euros 3yo; fifth foal; closely related to useful bumper and 2m/2m1f hurdle winner Black Poppy, half-brother to point winner Hard Ground; dam bumper winner, out of half-sister to 1m1f-1m4f Flat and 2m1f-2m5f jumps winner Naahil; finished second in a Dromahane point-to-point in April; solid claims. |
1st (1) A Tipp For Gold | | | | | | 5 | Danny Mullins | Ms Margaret Mullins | Solid form on bottomless ground in bumpers; came back from a break to finish a moderate fourth at Ballinrobe (2m7f, yielding to soft) on hurdling bow last month; Danny Mullins booked but drop in trip a worry; chance would be enhanced on soft ground. |
(3) Downmexicoway | | | | | | 5 | Darragh O'Keeffe | Henry De Bromhead | Impressive Belharbour 4yo point-to-point winner who was sent off favourite for a bumper at the 2023 Punchestown festival; made no impression on the day and has been off the track since; betting will guide on hurdling bow on first start for Henry de Bromhead. |
Padraig Roche's SPREAD YOUR WINGS is from a smart family and the filly had a troubled passage when unseating her rider on debut. Sent off a 6-1 chance, she was just creeping into contention when she was taken out of the contest by a faller and is worth another chance. Thisistheway, a bumper winner at Wexford on her debut, finished sixth in a hot Punchestown festival bumper when last seen and is respected on hurdling bow. A Tipp For Gold and Downmexicoway are of interest, while a market move for Gavin Cromwell's De Temps En Temps could be significant. [Adrian Wall]
Race 3: 15:30 Listowel Liam Healy Memorial Lartigue Hurdle (Listed Handicap) IRE 2m
9th (13) Malbay Madness | | | | | | 4 | P J O'Hanlon | Dermot A McLoughlin | Galway festival winner on the Flat last season; several good efforts in defeat over hurdles this year but failed to produce best form when sent off favourite for Galway festival handicap hurdle; third on the Flat at Clonmel latest; opposable on first run for Dermot McLoughlin; 1lb wrong. |
(15) Burvea | | | | | | 4 | Danny Gilligan | D Broad | Modest Flat maiden but a much better hurdler, getting off the mark in a Wexford fillies' maiden hurdle (2m1f, good) last month; fourth behind Pigeon House at Ballinrobe latest and has it all to do to reverse the form on these terms; first-time tongue-tie; 4lb wrong. |
4th (5) Macinamillion | | | | | | 4 | Alix Balfe | Gavin Cromwell | Has been in good form overall this year, off the mark over hurdles at Cork (2m, soft) in April and winning at Bellewstown (1m4f, good) on the Flat in July; fair run when fifth in Galway novice hurdle and has a big pull in the weights with Pigeon House on that run; needs to bounce back from poor effort on the Flat but is respected. |
8th (3) Rauzan | | | | | | 4 | Hugh Morgan | Eoin Doyle | Completed hurdling four-timer at Tramore (2m, good to yielding) last month with previous wins having come over further; non-runner (stiff) on the Flat two days later but this Aga Khan-bred won with plenty to spare last time and he might overcome the 9lb hike. |
(12) Kimy | | | | | | 4 | Sam Ewing | Thomas Mullins | Finished in the frame several times prior to getting off the mark over hurdles at Tramore (2m, good) last week; the form of that maiden hurdle is questionable though, and it's likely she'll need to take another giant leap forward to get involved. |
7th (6) St Faz | | | | | | 4 | Phillip Enright | E J O'Grady | In good form in the spring, winning a Killarney maiden hurdle before a good third in a Leopardstown Flat handicap; beaten at odds-on over hurdles at Bellewstown in July; plenty left in the tank when sixth of 14 at Tipperary (12.5f) on the Flat last month, hampered; each-way player. |
3rd (8) Bright Legend | | | | | | 4 | Danny Mullins | Denis Gerard Hogan | Heavy-ground maiden winner at the Curragh over 1m2f when trained by Fozzy Stack; 0-5 over hurdles, including when midfield in the Fred Winter at Cheltenham in March; disappointed twice at Galway (hurdles and Flat) of late and looks up against it here. |
(9) Hasten Slowly | | | | | | 4 | Alex Harvey | John C McConnell | Has had plenty of racing for her age but she impressed when getting off the mark over hurdles at Tramore (2m, good to yielding) last month; the third won a Kelso maiden hurdle this week; poor on the Flat latest but could be well treated on handicap debut over hurdles. |
(10) Oh So Charming | | | | | | 4 | Kevin Sexton | Declan Queally | Winner over 1m on the Flat for Grant Tuer in Britain; career-best run over hurdles when beaten half a length in a Galway maiden (2m, yielding) this month, closing all the way to the line; fair mark on handicap debut but the market could provide clues. |
6th (14) Struck By Churchil | | | | | | 4 | Cian Quirke | Andrew Slattery | Wexford maiden hurdle (2m1f, good) winner last month; value for more than the winning margin when scoring over 1m2f on the Flat at Navan this month, short of room but powering home late; might be capable of better back over hurdles on handicap debut; 3lb wrong. |
(2) Pigeon House | | | | | | 4 | Jack Kennedy | Mrs John Harrington | Won a handicap at the Punchestown festival; followed up two good runs at the Galway festival with victory at Ballinrobe (2m2f, yielding to soft) last month; 5lb higher in a much hotter race will make life tougher but he's respected with Jack Kennedy booked for the ride. |
1st (4) Eagles Reign | | | | | | 4 | Tom Harney | Ross O'Sullivan | Won a juvenile handicap hurdle in January and was runner-up in the Fred Winter 4yo hurdle at Cheltenham; disappointed at Aintree next time and no better on the Flat at Navan on return last month; best form on heavy so the ground could be turning in his favour. |
(1) Intellotto | | | | | | 4 | J J Slevin | Joseph Patrick O'Brien | Last run in this code when fourth behind Sir Gino in Grade 1 juvenile hurdle at Aintree in April; has been kept busy on the Flat during the summer, sixth of 12 at Killarney (14.5f, yielding to soft) last month; smart hurdler must be respected off 135. |
5th (11) Jeaniemacaroney | | | | | | 4 | Simon Torrens | Joseph Patrick O'Brien | Roscommon maiden hurdle (2m, good) winner in July; consistent in defeat on the Flat since, runner-up in all three outings including at Laytown latest; beaten favourite or joint-favourite five times in her career already so she's not one to place maximum faith in; each-way possibilities. |
2nd (7) Pinot Gris | | | | | | 4 | Conor Stone-Walsh | Gavin Cromwell | Progressive on the Flat last year and was just foiled in hat-trick attempt at this festival; got off the mark over hurdles at Bellewstown (2m1f, good to yielding) at the fourth attempt in April; couple of good efforts on the Flat since and low mileage in this sphere still; cheekpieces and tongue-tied. |
Pinot Gris is lightly raced in this sphere and is entitled to improve but RAUZAN still looks fairly treated off his new mark. Highly progressive, he can rattle off the five-timer in the hands of Hugh Morgan. Intellotto has plenty of weight to carry but is the class act in the race, while the form of Hasten Slowly's Tramore maiden hurdle win received a nice boost at Kelso this week. Place possibilities include Pigeon House, Jeaniemacaroney and Struck By Churchil. [Adrian Wall]
Race 4: 16:05 Listowel Adare Manor Opportunity Handicap Hurdle IRE 2m
(15) Eddierocket | | | | | | 6 | Robbie Geoghegan | Norman Lee | No show in three maiden hurdles; beaten 22l in ninth at 150-1 on handicap debut at Sligo; hard to make a case for him. |
(17) Trenchtown Rock | | | | | | 11 | Alan King | V T O'Brien | Two wins gained at Wexford in 2018 and 2019; not the most consistent sort since those days; not disgraced at Wexford early last month when chance was harmed by an early mistake; hard to fancy after more recent Bellewstown run. |
(2) Big Debates | | | | | | 11 | Anna McGuinness | Robert Tyner | Five-time winner is much better known as a chaser and is getting on in years; down the field in two handicap hurdle runs in the summer; others preferred. |
(14) Sayitfirst | | | | | | 8 | Diarmuid Moloney | Darren Collins | Fairyhouse win last October came off 81 and just denied at Sligo afterwards; twice in the frame on better ground this term; needs to improve on most recent showing at Kilbeggan. |
(5) Poets Cottage | | | | | | 5 | Neil Ryan | Noel Meade | Lacks a recent run and has not been the most consistent sort; could be given a chance on last season's best form, namely a long-priced third over 2m at Cork in November. |
(9) Pro Bono | | | | | | 9 | Cian Cullinan | Patrick Joseph Hayes | Maiden hurdle winner at Down Royal early last season; Tramore winner on the Flat a year ago; now on his third different trainer since then; in rear in a Flat handicap at Gowran in July; better over hurdles at Tramore last week but needs to find plenty more. |
(10) Benzine | | | | | | 5 | Peter Smithers | J Morrison | Low-grade handicapper on the Flat; closely matched with Targa Flavio on running in mid-division at Galway in his first handicap hurdle. |
(7) Mattie's Mountain | | | | | | 9 | Shane Fenelon | Eoin Christopher McCarthy | Completed a hat-trick in handicap hurdles in 2020; finished second in two outings over fences at this meeting two years ago; ran only three times last year, failing to recapture form; no encouragement from his return to action at Kilbeggan in May. |
(4) Pidoyne | | | | | | 6 | Ethan O'Sullivan | Henry De Bromhead | Won at Tramore early last season after a couple of promising runs; back to her best when scoring at Roscommon in June; had an excuse at Tramore last time, was making a little ground when badly hampered two out. |
1st (13) Ifitwasme | | | | | | 4 | Calum Hogan | E McNamara | 1-12 on the Flat; that win came at Tipperary in July on good to firm; not a bad effort when fourth over 1m4f at Tramore last time; showed little in three maiden hurdle outings last season; potential for improvement; trainer's runners command respect here. |
(16) Ganderstown | | | | | | 5 | Tom Kelly | C Byrnes | Modest form for Noel Meade; struggled in three races for a small Listowel yard; lost all chance with a bad mistake two out at Sligo on first start for Charles Byrnes; perhaps premature to write off. |
4th (6) Carlas Big Jim | | | | | | 6 | James Smith | L J Archdeacon | Went up a total of 16lb for winning handicaps at Clonmel and Gowran in February/March; those races were over further and he struggled over 2m at Limerick in April, his chance harmed by a series of errors. |
2nd (12) Targa Flavio | | | | | | 5 | Tom Harney | Ross O'Sullivan | Ordinary form in maidens; not beaten far in midfield on handicap debut at Galway; probably capable of improvement. |
(8) Baltinglass Hill | | | | | | 7 | Tiernan Power Roche | P J Rothwell | Three-time winner whose best form has been wins on sharpish tracks; three solid runs since Roscommon victory in June, notably when second at Wexford; would have gone closer but for a bad mistake two out when fourth at Kilbeggan; each-way chance. |
(1) Ah Remy Martin | | | | | | 6 | Corey McGivern | Thomas Gibney | Promise in bumpers last year on decent ground; much more testing conditions in first three hurdle runs last season possibly did not suit; close up in third when favourite at Down Royal in his second handicap; likely contender. |
3rd (11) Say It So | | | | | | 5 | Patrick M O'Brien | E McNamara | Quirky character but won off 6lb lower at Cork and has since underlined his current form with a solid Flat run; trainer likes to target this festival. |
There could be better to come from SAY IT SO who won off 6lb lower at Cork and has since underlined his current form with a solid Flat run. Baltinglass Hill appeals as one of the more consistent members of this field. Ah Remy Martin may be on the upgrade. Ganderstown is a potential dark horse. The selection's stablemate Ifitwasme is not without a chance. [Alan Sweetman]
Race 5: 16:37 Listowel Behans Horseshoe Bar, Restaurant & Townhouse Handicap Hurdle IRE 2m 4f
(1) Great Bear | | | | | | 8 | Ethan O'Sullivan | Henry De Bromhead | Decent form over fences this season but failed to make any impression from a lower hurdles mark at the Galway festival; strike-rate of 1-19 over jumps isn't encouraging; much to prove at present. |
(9) Whatsavailable | | | | | | 7 | Darragh O'Keeffe | M F Morris | Beaten out of sight in two starts over fences since May; return to hurdling should at least be a help and he's 4lb lower than when second at Clonmel (3m, heavy) last October; best form in the mud. |
(16) Fathom Two | | | | | | 7 | Kieren Buckley | Gavin Cromwell | Downpatrick maiden hurdle winner last September was pulled up when last seen in that sphere; beaten a long way in two chase starts in May and no better when pulled up at Clonmel in June; return to hurdling a plus but very risky. |
(19) Cozone | | | | | | 7 | | Matthew J Smith | First reserve; three career wins, including an 11l victory in a C&D handicap hurdle at this festival last year; no show in any race this year and still 4lb above last winning mark but monitor the market closely if he gets a run. |
(21) Ollie La Ba Ba | | | | | | 6 | | Eoin Christopher McCarthy | Third reserve; consistent in maiden hurdles before landing a 2m6f Downpatrick maiden hurdle in June; below that form at Tramore recently; 5th at Listowel yesterday and best watched. |
(2) Major Barry | | | | | | 6 | Danny Gilligan | John E & Thomas Kiely | Won twice over hurdles during the summer but form has taken a nosedive, beaten a combined 84l in last two outings; step back up in trip should be a help but he looks a risky betting proposition at the moment. |
(15) Bynx | | | | | | 6 | Sean Flanagan | Martin Hassett | Dual winner over hurdles and was better than the bare result when 12th of 22 in a 1m6f Flat handicap at Navan last month, checked twice late on and beaten 5l; remote fifth in this race last year and now 3lb higher. |
(17) Wudya | | | | | | 5 | Sam Ewing | Gordon Elliott | Won a Killarney maiden hurdle (2m7f, good) in July despite having a tendency to jump badly to the right; weakened badly at Downpatrick on handicap debut last time; Jack Kennedy prefers Big Stage and her jumping would be a concern going left-handed again. |
(14) Jeriko De Baune | | | | | | 5 | Brian Hayes | Philip Fenton | Improver since switching to handicaps, winning two of his last five starts and was only beaten 2l into third at Cork over 3m when last seen in March; 4lb higher here and ground should be in his favour. |
(20) Jolie Jewel | | | | | | 5 | | Brian M McMahon | Second reserve; shock 50-1 winner in 2m3f Cork maiden hurdle in May; few miles on the clock, did best work at the finish when fifth at Ballinrobe over 2m6f this month; might need a stiffer test. |
(5) Grange Walk | | | | | | 9 | Cian Quirke | John Patrick Ryan | Four-time chase winner at up to 2m2f; beaten out of sight in a pair of Galway handicaps in August and sole hurdles victory was in 2020; looks difficult to recommend at present. |
2nd (18) Club Manager | | | | | | 4 | Conor Stone-Walsh | Gavin Cromwell | Dual Flat winner isn't the most natural of hurdlers but he did win a Bellewstown handicap hurdle (2m1f, good to yielding) in April; some solid runs in defeat since but he was withdrawn due to the going (good) when last seen so he will appreciate a softer surface. |
(3) Zoffanien | | | | | | 7 | John Shinnick | Terence O'Brien | Three-time winner over hurdles when trained by Denis Hogan; three big runs in tough handicaps on the Flat for his new handler, including when third in the Ulster Cesarewitch at Down Royal latest; each-way contender from a nice mark. |
(4) Big Stage | | | | | | 6 | Jack Kennedy | Gordon Elliott | Point-to-point winner placed in first four maiden hurdles; sent off favourite, he appreciated the drop in trip when bolting up in a Downpatrick maiden hurdle (2m3f, good) in May; respected on handicap debut. |
(13) Great Universe | | | | | | 8 | Ricky Doyle | Martin Brassil | Wide-margin bumper winner on heavy ground at Clonmel in March 2023; third to the smart Chapeau Du Soleil in Clonmel maiden hurdle in December before solid third to Mossy Fen Park (runs in the 5.10) at Down Royal at Christmas; lengthy layoff to overcome on handicap debut. |
(12) Dutch Schultz | | | | | | 7 | Keith Donoghue | Gavin Cromwell | Consistent over fences this year before gamely landing 2m4f Tipperary rated novice (good) in July; well held in Galway premier Flat handicap but won 2m1f Killarney handicap chase last month; returns to hurdling off a lower mark. |
(10) Win Some Lose Some | | | | | | 5 | Mark Walsh | Padraig Roche | Off the mark in a 2m3f Kilbeggan maiden hurdle on his third start in May; jumping let him down dropped in trip at Sligo on handicap debut but he won well at Wexford when last seen in July despite not jumping too fluently; up 10lb but a big player if his jumping holds up. |
1st (7) Pray Tell | | | | | | 8 | James Smith | Desmond Kenneally | Good form in maiden/novice hurdles at up to 3m; mid-division at Galway over 2m6f on handicap debut in July; enjoyed the drop in trip when forging clear to win by 15l in a Kilbeggan maiden hurdle (2m3f, yielding) this month but struggled off this mark before. |
3rd (11) Ballywilliam Boy | | | | | | 9 | Danny Mullins | Michael Hourigan | Two good efforts in second over fences this summer, most recently when beaten a neck in a hotter contest over 2m1f at Kilbeggan; only 2lb higher than when runner-up over hurdles at Tipperary in July; each-way contender. |
4th (6) Millstream Lady | | | | | | 6 | Daniel King | E McNamara | Bolted up in a C&D handicap hurdle at this festival last year; progressive handicapper won over 2m2f at Naas in January; she took another big leap forward when second in 2m6f Grade 3 Limerick mares' hurdle behind a smart type in March; late headway when sixth of 24 in Punchestown handicap in April; massive player from same mark if fit after a short break. |
Eric McNamara's MILLSTREAM LADY (nap) was an impressive winner of a C&D handicap hurdle at this festival last year and gets the nod. Second to a smart horse in a Limerick Grade 3 subsequently, her form stacks up and she could be hard to beat if she's fit after a break. Jack Kennedy will ride Big Stage who looked really good when winning a Downpatrick maiden hurdle, while Dutch Schultz could be well treated back over hurdles. Win Some Lose Some carries the JP McManus colours and the Wexford winner must be respected too. [Adrian Wall]

4th (7) King Of Cong | | | | | | 6 | John Shinnick | Terence O'Brien | Made a winning handicap hurdle debut at Limerick (2m3f, heavy) in April when sent off a well-backed favourite; pulled up at Ballinrobe next time after a 16lb hike and was beaten 34l when a remote fourth of 12 at Wexford in May; third in a point-to-point but looks set to struggle here. |
(1) Ambitious Fellow | | | | | | 8 | Danny Mullins | Peter Fahey | Five-time winner won a valuable 2m6f handicap hurdle at Galway last year; he won a 2m4f novice hurdle at this festival in 2022 but he's yet to impress over fences and was tailed off last at Killarney last month. |
(11) Topgun Simmy | | | | | | 5 | Jordan Gainford | John Joseph Hanlon | Second to Brighterdaysahead in Fairyhouse bumper; won a 3m Punchestown maiden hurdle in June; good fourth at Galway on handicap hurdle debut but poor effort on chasing debut at Killarney last month; minor role awaits. |
(3) Caesar Rock | | | | | | 8 | Gavin Brouder | M F Morris | Winning hurdler; now 0-15 over fences but has placed seven times; weakened late on when upped to 3m at Killarney last month; has experience but will be a surprise if he's up to the task in this company. |
(10) Stuzzikini | | | | | | 6 | Sam Ewing | Gordon Elliott | Dual winner over hurdles who has filled the runner-up berth twice from five starts over fences; eyecatching close fifth over this trip at Galway but disappointing at Killarney latest and Jack Kennedy prefers Yeats Star. |
(4) Dartan | | | | | | 7 | James Smith | Matthew J Smith | Eight-time winner, the latest a Bellewstown handicap hurdle last summer; second in a 2m6f beginners' on chasing debut at Galway after an absence last month before finishing midfield in the 2m6f Listed handicap hurdle two days later; definite contender. |
(5) Encanto Bruno | | | | | | 6 | Keith Donoghue | Gavin Cromwell | Two bumper wins in 2022; best hurdles form when winning an Irish-dominated novice event at Cheltenham last October; finished last in the Royal Bond; pulled up when sent off favourite for Killarney handicap hurdle in May; point-to-point winner so could improve sent chasing but will need to. |
2nd (9) Sportinthepark | | | | | | 5 | Donagh Meyler | Noel Meade | Cost plenty after finishing second in sole point-to-point; 2m4f Wexford maiden hurdle winner; rated 120 in that sphere and can be expected to improve on moderate sixth on chasing bow at Down Royal in May. |
3rd (6) Good Time Jonny | | | | | | 9 | Mr Derek O'Connor | Mrs C O'Leary | Won the Pertemps at Cheltenham in 2023; struggled over fences last season and was well beaten on the Flat at Roscommon this month; difficult to fancy at present. |
(2) Billericay Dickie | | | | | | 5 | Paul Townend | W P Mullins | Classy Flat pedigree and won over 1m4f in France; won 2m4f maiden hurdle at Punchestown (heavy) in January; slight improvement in form when okay third of five at Down Royal over 3m last month; powerful stable but difficult to fancy on chasing bow. |
(8) Mossy Fen Park | | | | | | 5 | Darragh O'Keeffe | Henry De Bromhead | Wide-margin point-to-point winner; won Down Royal maiden hurdle (2m4f, soft) at Christmas and was an excellent second in a hot 2m4f Grade 2 hurdle at Fairyhouse in March; Henry de Bromhead paid £235,000 to keep him in his yard and he looks a real chasing type. |
1st (12) Yeats Star | | | | | | 5 | Jack Kennedy | Gordon Elliott | Progressive over hurdles last season, winning twice and a good third in 3m Listed handicap at Leopardstown; pulled up in the Martin Pipe at Cheltenham; respectable fourth of 15 at Bellewstown last month; interesting recruit to chasing and is the choice of Jack Kennedy. |
Trainer Henry de Bromhead had to stretch to £235,000 to keep MOSSY FEN PARK in his yard and the wide-margin point-to-point winner should be well up to the job on chasing debut. The list of dangers include Dartan, who ran a huge race on chasing bow at Galway last month, and Yeats Star, who was progressive over hurdles last season and could be well up to making his presence felt. Sportinthepark is another who has to enter the discusson. He was purchased for a hefty sum after finishing second in his point-to-point and is still lightly raced in this sphere. [Adrian Wall]

1st (1) Friary Road | | | | | | 4 | Mr J H Williamson | T M Walsh | Beaten around 10l when fifth of 12 at Killarney five weeks ago; should be better for that experience. |
(6) Live Aid | | | | | | 4 | Mr J L Gleeson | Emmet Mullins | Strong in the market on debut at Kilbeggan; took the lead half a mile from home but faded tamely; premature to write off. |
(19) Amen Kate | | | | | | 4 | | Thomas Cooper | First reserve; Cost 75,000euros at three; second foal; half-sister to Listed bumper winner Baby Kate; dam won three bumper and was a smart hurdler, out of unbeaten bumper and high-class 2m hurdle winner Feathard Lady; potentially very interesting. |
(12) South Of Killerig | | | | | | 4 | Mr L P Shanahan | Ross O'Sullivan | Two fourth placings over hurdles; has shown enough to suggest he could be involved here, especially since the form of his Wexford run was advertised when the winner followed up on the Flat at Navan. |
(11) Rural Link | | | | | | 4 | Mr P W Mullins | J S Bolger | Soundly beaten first time out at Leopardstown in March; with tongue-tie fitted, Punchestown fifth on second start indicated potential; notable trainer/rider combination. |
(15) William Butler | | | | | | 4 | Mr H C Swan | Gordon Elliott | First foal; by Yeats, dam bumper/hurdle winner by Flemensfirth, half-sister to hurdle/chase winner Pure Vision; Gordon Elliott-trained debutante is of obvious interest. |
(3) Goldinthevalleys | | | | | | 4 | Mr Derek O'Connor | Martin Brassil | Cost 220,000euros as a yearling; second foal; half-brother to French 1m2f AW winner Solebay; dam 1m-1m4f winner, closely related to 1m7f Listed winner Big Five, half-sister to 1m Group 1 winner Flotilla; tongue-tie on for debut. |
Not a great deal to go on here. A hopeful vote goes to SOUTH OF KILLERIG who has contested two maiden hurdles and may have the speed for this test. It is unlikely that the best was seen of Live Aid who was favourite on his debut. Rural Link represents an interesting trainer/rider combination. Newcomers William Butler and Goldinthevalleys are worth considering. [Alan Sweetman]
