1st (3) (12/1 -33%) Maxident |
12/1(-33%) | (3) Maxident 12/1, 20,000 gns foal. Nathaniel half-brother to numerous winners, including smart 1¼m-1½m winner Matchwinner and useful winner up to 1¼m Moon A Lisa. Makes paper appeal and it'll be interesting to see how he goes in the betting.
2nd (2) (0.8/1 -29%) Carlton |
0.8/1(-29%) | (2) Carlton 0.8/1, 9/2, shaped well amidst greenness when fourth of 12 in maiden at Doncaster (1¼m, heavy, 9/2) on debut 13 days ago. Sure to improve and probably the one to beat.
3rd (1) (1.25/1 +44%) Another Run |
1.25/1(+44%) | (1) Another Run 1.25/1, Progressive form, finishing 2 lengths second in 11f Kempton novice last month. Bold show looks assured. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 4 race.
Carlton has a likable pedigree but he would need to post a vastly improved effort from his debut run if he's going to fulfill his entry in next month's Dante at York. Therefore, this might be best left to ANOTHER RUN, who sets a reasonable standard and he is taken to make a successful transition to racing on turf. Maxident is bred to be effective at the trip but is best watched today.
CARLTON should be all the wiser with his recent Doncaster debut behind him and gets the nod, with confidence in his chance increased should the betting vibes be strong given that his yard was responsible for the horse that beat Another Run at Kempton last month.
This can go the way of CARLTON who seemed to cope with heavy ground okay when a never-dangerous fourth at Doncaster.

1st (3) (0.67/1 +8%) Gerri Colombe |
0.67/1(+8%) | (3) Gerri Colombe 0.67/1, Successful only start in points and won first 7 starts under Rules, notably Grade 1s at Limerick and Sandown this season. Lost his unbeaten record only by a very small margin in Brown Advisory at the Cheltenham Festival and this looks a good opportunity for him to resume winning ways.
2nd (2) (8/1 -23%) Complete Unknown |
8/1(-23%) | (2) Complete Unknown 8/1, Developed into a useful hurdler last season and made a winning start over fences at Ffos Las (21f, heavy) in December. Beaten 13 lengths by Galia des Liteaux in Warwick Grade 2 but resumed progress with a devastating win in Kempton handicap last month. Not taken lightly.
3rd (1) (3.5/1 +0%) Bronn |
3.5/1(+0%) | (1) Bronn 3.5/1, Won sole start in bumpers and 2 from 5 over hurdles, notably Fairyhouse Grade 2. Landed odds in maiden chase at that venue in January and big improvement when 4¼ lengths third in Brown Advisory at Cheltenham Festival next time, travelling best. This track should play to his strengths.
4th (6) (8.5/1 +29%) Galia Des Liteaux |
8.5/1(+29%) | (6) Galia Des Liteaux 8.5/1, Point/hurdles winner who made an impressive winning debut over fences at Bangor (heavy). Never figured on back of an early blunder in Kauto Star but firmly back on track to land Warwick Grade 2 (heavy) in January. However, only16¼ lengths fifth in Brown Advisory at Cheltenham Festival. Needs rain.
5th (5) (20/1 +0%) Thomas Darby |
20/1(+0%) | (5) Thomas Darby 20/1, Won the Long Distance Hurdle at Newbury in 2021/22 but was a well-beaten third in that corresponding race in November. Had a brief try over fences 3 years ago but was back to his best returned to this sphere when landing 4-runner handicap at Ayr in February. This probably too demanding, however.
|F| (4) (80/1 +0%) Sholokjack |
80/1(+0%) | (4) Sholokjack 80/1, Irish point/dual hurdles winner who showed no ill effects for his chase debut fall when scoring with plenty in hand at Lingfield in January. However, again let down by jumping when well held at Kelso since and firmly up against it at this level. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 1 race.
GERRI COLOMBE did well to finish within a short-head of The Real Whacker in the Brown Advisory last month, having failed to convince with his jumping throughout. Despite that, he had the reopposing Bronn (third) in behind him and, granted a clean round, it's unlikely that the latter will reverse the form. Galia Des Liteaux beat Complete Unknown (second) in a Grade 2 at Warwick before going on to finish a creditable fifth behind the two aforementioned rivals and she might be best placed to follow them home. Both Thomas Darby and Sholokjack would need career-best performances if they're to have a say.
GERRI COLOMBE only just failed to reel in the winner when losing his unbeaten record in the Brown Advisory at the Cheltenham Festival and he's taken to gain compensation here and record a third Grade 1 success over fences. Bronn was over 4 lengths behind Gerri Colombe that day but the way he travelled suggests it's entirely possible he can finish closer to the selection at this sharper track.
The mare GALIA DES LITEAUX is better than she showed at Cheltenham and is the selection ahead of Bronn.

1st (2) (1.5/1 +0%) Maximum Impact |
1.5/1(+0%) | (2) Maximum Impact 1.5/1, Foaled February 10. 70,000 gns yearling, Havana Grey colt. Half-brother to French 8.5f winner Bird Out. Dam 2-y-o 1m winner out of smart winner up to 12.5f (2-y-o 9f winner) Oiseau Rare.
2nd (4) (3.33/1 +17%) Regal Fighter |
3.33/1(+17%) | (4) Regal Fighter 3.33/1, Foaled April 20. 3,000 gns yearling, Decorated Knight colt. Half-brother to several winners, including 9.5f-12.5f winner Taekwondo and 6.5f winner Taramana, both in France. 50/1, eighth of 16 in minor event (Brocklesby) at Doncaster (5f, heavy) on debut 13 days ago, green and late headway.
3rd (3) (20/1 +20%) Mullins Beach |
20/1(+20%) | (3) Mullins Beach 20/1, Foaled March 5. 15,000 gns yearling, Unfortunately gelding. Dam of little account, closely related to US Grade 2 1m winner Istanford.
4th (1) (2.25/1 -13%) Dark Points |
2.25/1(-13%) | (1) Dark Points 2.25/1, Foaled March 17. Blue Point colt. Dam 2-y-o 1m winner. Interesting newcomer.
5th (5) (8/1 +33%) Surface To Air |
8/1(+33%) | (5) Surface To Air 8/1, Foaled January 15. €8,000 yearling, Markaz gelding. Half-brother to winner abroad by Tamayuz. Dam lightly-raced half-sister to smart 7f/1m winner First Contact. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 5 race.
MAXIMUM IMPACT, who cost 70,000gns as a yearling, is an appealing prospect and has been found a good opportunity to get off the mark at the first time of asking. Dark Points and Mullins Beach have similar profiles and can give the selection the most to think about, while Regal Fighter was not disgraced in the Brocklesby and could put that experience to good use.
Four of the quintet are newcomer, and before market clues DARK POINTS is just preferred to Maximum Impact. Regal Fighter was getting the hang of things late on in the Brocklesby and could take a step forward.
Regal Fighter has the benefit of experience but Charlie Johnston's well-bred newcomer DARK POINTS is given the vote.

1st (5) (16/1 +52%) It's Maisy |
16/1(+52%) | (5) It's Maisy 16/1, Fair form standout effort in bumpers but was well held on C&D hurdling debut in February and promises to be of little interest this side of handicaps.
2nd (3) (200/1 -100%) Bilboa River |
200/1(-100%) | (3) Bilboa River 200/1, Ex-pointer who hasn't offered much under Rules. Off 15 months. First run for yard after leaving Richard Price.
|C| (1) (1.38/1 +21%) Blue Fin |
1.38/1(+21%) | (1) Blue Fin 1.38/1, Runner-up on only start in bumpers and opened his account at the third time of asking over hurdles in 8-runner novice at Newcastle (16.9f) in February. Turned in a bit of a lacklustre effort under a penalty at Uttoxeter but still a major player in an uncompetitive race.
|F| (4) (40/1 -233%) Longstone Cowboy |
40/1(-233%) | (4) Longstone Cowboy 40/1, Little impact between the flags but much more like it fitted with a hood when runner-up on second hurdles outing at Hexham (20.1f) in September. Ran to a similar level at Kelso next time but has his work cut out up against a fairly useful pair on his return.
|U| (2) (0.67/1 +0%) Rambo T |
0.67/1(+0%) | (2) Rambo T 0.67/1, Fairly useful bumper winner who confirmed previous promise upped in trip when off the mark in 13-runner novice at Chepstow (19.4f) 48 days ago, albeit fortunate on the day. Has obvious claims of following up. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 4 race.
Although a slightly fortunate winner at Chepstow last time (two lengths down when left clear at the last) RAMBO T sets the standard as he looks to follow up. The form of the Ollly Murphy stable is another plus and he should have too much for Newcastle winner Blue Fin, who is better than what he showed at Uttoxeter last time. Longstone Cowboy has claims on his penultimate second at Hexham.
A likely match between BLUE FIN and Rambo T. The former was a shade underwhelming at Uttoxeter last time, but he'd previously been going the right way and can get back to winning ways in an uncompetitive event.
This can go to RAMBO T, who had the placed horses well strung out behind him when scoring over a similar trip at Chepstow last time.

1st (19) (8/1 +20%) Fennor Cross |
8/1(+20%) | (19) Fennor Cross 8/1, Fairly useful handicapper on the Flat who has taken well to hurdling, winning a maiden and Grade 2 over 2m at Cheltenham in the autumn. Found the Supreme too much there last month but more realistic chance now switching to a handicap. Up in trip.
2nd (14) (8/1 +20%) Buddy One |
8/1(+20%) | (14) Buddy One 8/1, Progressive hurdler who shaped very well when 1½ lengths third (No Ordinary Joe nose ahead in second) in Martin Pipe at Cheltenham last month, making his effort earlier than ideal and not helping rider by hanging left in the closing stages. One to consider.
3rd (18) (18/1 -13%) Sonigino |
18/1(-13%) | (18) Sonigino 18/1, Looked a different proposition since returning from wind surgery this season, making it 3 wins in 4 starts when just clinging on at Huntingdon (19.5f) in February. Only nudged up another 2 lb but this is a much stronger race.
4th (13) (22/1 +12%) Tritonic |
22/1(+12%) | (13) Tritonic 22/1, Well-served by strongly-run race when landing valuable Betfair Exchange handicap at Ascot (2m) last winter. As good as ever on the Flat in 2022 (won at Goodwood in October) but has yet to translate that back to hurdles, finishing 11¼ lengths fifth of 16 to Benson in Morebattle at Kelso latest.
5th (21) (16/1 +43%) Harbour Lake |
16/1(+43%) | (21) Harbour Lake 16/1, Won his first 4 completed starts over hurdles and mostly creditable efforts in defeat since, including over C&D. Hard to argue he has much in hand of his mark, though.
6th (12) (50/1 -52%) West To The Bridge |
50/1(-52%) | (12) West To The Bridge 50/1, Better than ever when winning a 2½m Sandown handicap in March for the second year running. Might have found the run coming too soon when fading into ninth in Martin Pipe at Cheltenham 10 days later.
7th (4) (7.5/1 +25%) No Ordinary Joe |
7.5/1(+25%) | (4) No Ordinary Joe 7.5/1, Made a winning reappearance at Kempton (2m, soft) over Christmas. Better than the result when mid-field in Betfair Hurdle at Newbury next time and back on the up with excellent second (Buddy One third) of 21 in Martin Pipe at Cheltenham (2½m) 4 weeks ago. Much respected.
8th (16) (14/1 +30%) Nells Son |
14/1(+30%) | (16) Nells Son 14/1, Useful novice hurdler (won Grade 2) last season. Things haven't really gone to plan since a near miss on his chase debut/reappearance but he did shape a bit better in the Coral Cup at Cheltenham last time, travelling well before fading into eighth.
9th (11) (20/1 +20%) Jungle Jack |
20/1(+20%) | (11) Jungle Jack 20/1, Yet to finish outside of the first 2 in 8 starts over hurdles, resuming winning ways with cheekpieces added (retained) in 7-runner 2½m Bangor handicap last month. This a lot more competitive, though, and he'll need a career best to extend that run of top 2 finishes.
10th (6) (12/1 +14%) Good Risk At All |
12/1(+14%) | (6) Good Risk At All 12/1, High-end bumper performer who produced a pretty smart performance to land a 2½m Carlisle handicap in the mud on his reappearance in October. Failed to stay 3m at Haydock next time and respectable seventh (albeit behind a couple of these) of 26 in Coral Cup at Cheltenham latest.
11th (8) (8/1 +20%) Dargiannini |
8/1(+20%) | (8) Dargiannini 8/1, Fell on chase/yard debut in December but better than ever when winning handicap hurdles around 2½m at Uttoxeter (soft) and Newbury (good to firm) since. This more competitive but he could easily have more to offer for his emerging stable. On the shortlist.
12th (20) (14/1 +0%) Pull Again Green |
14/1(+0%) | (20) Pull Again Green 14/1, Useful/progressive form over hurdles last season, winning 3 times. A touch disappointing over fences in the autumn but shaped better back hurdling after a break when fifth of 10 at Kempton (21f, heavy) 4 weeks ago.
13th (9) (33/1 +0%) Molly Ollys Wishes |
33/1(+0%) | (9) Molly Ollys Wishes 33/1, Landed a Wetherby mares' listed hurdle for second year running in October but not in same form since, including only mid-field in the Martin Pipe at Cheltenham last month. Others are more obvious.
14th (17) (25/1 +24%) Irish Hill |
25/1(+24%) | (17) Irish Hill 25/1, Progressive when completing a handicap hurdle hat-trick this winter but another rise in the weights found him out in the Martin Pipe at Cheltenham. Cobden seemingly prefers Sonigino.
15th (3) (8.5/1 -31%) Camprond |
8.5/1(-31%) | (3) Camprond 8.5/1, Smart effort to win a big-field handicap at the Punchestown Festival last spring. Very much back to form when close third of 26 in Coral Cup at Cheltenham (21f) last month, shaping better than result after committing for home a touch too soon. Raised 5 lb but still a major player here.
16th (2) (40/1 -21%) The Bosses Oscar |
40/1(-21%) | (2) The Bosses Oscar 40/1, Smart hurdler/chaser who landed 2½m Limerick conditions hurdle in July before resuming from 6 months off with good third in 3m handicap at Musselburgh in January. Below par in Pertemps Final at Cheltenham since, though. Back down in trip.
17th (5) (8/1 +0%) Captain Conby |
8/1(+0%) | (5) Captain Conby 8/1, Maiden/novice winner at Punchestown last season and took form to a whole new level when second of 19 in a 19.5f handicap at that venue in December. Travelled well long way when sixth of 26 in Coral Cup at Cheltenham last month. Remains of interest in good handicaps.
18th (22) (18/1 +36%) Off Your Rocco |
18/1(+36%) | (22) Off Your Rocco 18/1, Won 4 of first 5 starts and looked a smart performer in the making. Hasn't been able to confirm that since returning from a year on the sidelines but he did shape a bit better in the Coral Cup at Cheltenham and sneaks in at the bottom of the weights for a stable with winning form in this race.
19th (10) (14/1 +22%) Martello Sky |
14/1(+22%) | (10) Martello Sky 14/1, Useful hurdler who has been consistent in defeat at listed/Graded level this season. Step back up in trip now should suit her and she won off a higher mark at Cheltenham last season. Not discounted.
|PU| (1) (80/1 -60%) Jason The Militant |
80/1(-60%) | (1) Jason The Militant 80/1, Smart hurdler for Henry De Bromhead and also bagged a listed race on the Flat in October 2021. Respectable effort in Cheltenham handicap hurdle in January on yard debut and out of depth in Champion Hurdle there since. Back up in trip. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 1 race.
In a fiercely competitive handicap it may be worth siding with MARTELLO SKY, who looks overpriced when you go back through her form. Although yet to win this season, she was last seen finishing third to Epatante in a Grade 2 at Doncaster and this will be her first venture into handicap company since winning at Cheltenham off 3lb higher in December 2021. Going and trip look ideal and she could go well at a big price, though Camprond is an obvious danger. He may have won the Coral Cup barring a mistake at the last, although an added 5lb from the handicapper won't make his task any easier. Sonigino may look to slip the field early and make all the running, while Irish raider The Bosses Oscar is another who is hard to ignore.
This is ultra competitive. CAMPROND shaped very well in the Coral Cup and could be the answer. No Ordinary Joe and Buddy One are also much respected on the back of excellent placed efforts at the Cheltenham Festival. Harry Derham is starting to make a name for himself in the training ranks and his hat-trick seeking Dargiannini is also on the shortlist along with Imperial Cup third Playful Saint, who could prove suited by this longer trip.
The step up in trip promises to suit FENNOR CROSS, who caught the eye in the Supreme Novices' Hurdle despite finishing down the field.

6/1(-243%) | (2) Timeless Melody 6/1, Improved on debut form when second in 10-runner maiden at Leicester (1m3f) when last seen a year ago. Back down markedly in trip on first run for yard after leaving Charlie Appleby. Interesting contender.
2nd (9) (3.33/1 +17%) Mexicali Rose |
3.33/1(+17%) | (9) Mexicali Rose 3.33/1, Knew her job well and showed plenty of ability when third of 12 in minor event at Newmarket (7f) on debut. Failed to progress at Lingfield but that was a messy affair and she's worth another chance.
3rd (11) (12/1 +14%) Torfrida |
12/1(+14%) | (11) Torfrida 12/1, Aclaim filly. Dam 1¼m winner out of 1000 Guineas winner Speciosa (2-y-o 7f/7.5f winner who stayed 1¼m).
4th (7) (7.5/1 +38%) Smile And Pay |
7.5/1(+38%) | (7) Smile And Pay 7.5/1, Modest maiden who ran respectably on form when third of 12 in handicap at Redcar (6f, heavy) 4 days ago. Will benefit from a return to 7f but no easy task on these terms.
5th (5) (2.25/1 +32%) Frequent Flyer |
2.25/1(+32%) | (5) Frequent Flyer 2.25/1, Fair maiden who was runner-up twice from 4 starts last year. Well held in valuable sales race at the Curragh on final outing but could bounce back now returning to calmer waters.
6th (10) (22/1 +45%) Selenachorus |
22/1(+45%) | (10) Selenachorus 22/1, Badly in need of the experience when well in novice event at Kempton (8f) on debut. Off 147 days. Should do better somewhere down the line.
7th (1) (250/1 -150%) Beast Of Burden |

8th (3) (8/1 -7%) Classic Speed |

9th (4) (80/1 -21%) Dawn Mission |
80/1(-21%) | (4) Dawn Mission 80/1, Down the field in 2 minor events. Gelded since last seen.
10th (8) (50/1 +0%) Yankee Spirit |
50/1(+0%) | (8) Yankee Spirit 50/1, Shaped with some encouragement before weakening in 7f maiden at Kempton (66/1) on debut. Off 147 days. Open to improvement
11th (6) (6.5/1 +59%) Get Off Me |
6.5/1(+59%) | (6) Get Off Me 6.5/1, £46,000 yearling, Dandy Man gelding. Half-brother to 3 winners, including useful 7f/1m winner Encourageable and 1¼m/11f winner Moorland Spirit. Makes appeal on paper and requires a market check. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 5 race.
TIMELESS MELODY showed ability in both starts last season and appeals despite just failing to justify favouritism in a decent maiden at Kempton when last seen. She has since switched to the very capable hands of William Haggas and this daughter of Teofilo can flourish under his tutelage. Frequent Flyer has his sights lowered after being pitched in the Goffs Million at the Curragh last time and is high on the shortlist, while Get Off Me is a notable debutant to consider.
TIMELESS MELODY drops back markedly in trip but her pedigree suggests it shouldn't be a major problem so she's taken to confirm her 3-y-o promise on first start for William Haggas. Mexicali Rose and Frequent Flyer head up the opposition.
Ralph Beckett's MEXICALI ROSE is out of a Pivotal mare so she should be fine on this ground. Her debut was encouraging.

1st (3) (4/1 +11%) Fulgurix |
4/1(+11%) | (3) Fulgurix 4/1, Winner at Hexham (2m) last spring. Seen just 3 times since but was a respectable third at Wetherby 24 days ago after 4 months off and entitled to come on for that. Stamina to prove.
2nd (6) (22/1 +12%) Touch Kick |
22/1(+12%) | (6) Touch Kick 22/1, Veteran whose losing run is mounting up and again finished weakly when fifth of 10 in handicap chase at Kelso (21.6f, heavy) 89 days ago.
3rd (1) (5.5/1 +66%) Marshalled |
5.5/1(+66%) | (1) Marshalled 5.5/1, Notched second win over hurdles at Punchestown last spring (also successful twice in this sphere) and good second returned to fences back from a break at Fairyhouse in October. Mistakes have proved costly since, however, including both starts for this yard.
4th (9) (5.5/1 +0%) Spot On Soph |
5.5/1(+0%) | (9) Spot On Soph 5.5/1, Won a pair of 19f Catterick handicap chases last season. Runner-up a couple of times this term and in better form over hurdles than recent form figures suggest.
5th (4) (3.33/1 -77%) Road Warrior |
3.33/1(-77%) | (4) Road Warrior 3.33/1, Bounced back to form with a bang when 12-length winner at Newcastle last month. Remains potentially well treated and capable of holding his form once finding it (consistent last term), so good chance of following up with yard going well still.
6th (7) (4.5/1 +40%) Mister Bells |

10/1(+44%) | (8) Mac Suibhne 10/1, Made a positive start for this yard after joining from Ireland, winning over hurdles in July and making a successful debut over fences in a match race at Wetherby (21f) in October. Not so good next 2 starts but given a break since.
|PU| (2) (14/1 -40%) Getaway Luv |
14/1(-40%) | (2) Getaway Luv 14/1, Successful over fences either side of a heavy defeat over hurdles but could hardly have been more fortunate for latter win at Ayr (favourite fell when clear and other rival weakened markedly). Struggled off same mark at Carlisle since and has been eased 3 lb.
|PU| (5) (50/1 -400%) Cilluirid |
50/1(-400%) | (5) Cilluirid 50/1, Has developed into a Sedgefield specialist over fences, winning 4 handicaps here in 2021/22. Well held here when last seen in May but returns on a winning mark. Market should reveal expectations. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 4 race.
Road Warrior has never been the most consistent and it is difficult to know if he can uphold the form he showed when bounding clear at Newcastle last month. The safer option may be MISTER BELLS, who got it together for these connections at Market Rasen and is still well handicapped on his old Irish form. Fulgurix is a decent sort at this level and must be noted, along with the capable Getaway Luv.
ROAD WARRIOR capitalised on his lowest mark for 2 years at Newcastle last month and remains potentially well treated up 7 lb, so he is taken to follow up with his yard still in good form. Cilluirid has an excellent record here and reappears on a winning mark, so may emerge as the biggest threat ahead of Fulgurix.
Top of the list is ROAD WARRIOR (nap), who cashed in on a reduced mark with his dominant display at Newcastle last month.

1st (6) (3/1 +25%) Inthepocket |
3/1(+25%) | (6) Inthepocket 3/1, Cost £290,000 after winning his sole point and impressive when landing Wexford maiden hurdle in October. Maintained unbeaten record stepped up in trip/grade at Naas (19.9f) and ran his best race when fourth in the Supreme at the Cheltenham Festival (16.4f) last time. Sets the standard.
2nd (12) (14/1 +22%) Strong Leader |
14/1(+22%) | (12) Strong Leader 14/1, Looked highly promising in bumpers and impressively made it 3-3 in this sphere in a 2m Southwell novice, quickening clear under hands and heels from home turn. Ran about as well as could have been expected in the Supreme at Cheltenham and has each-way claims.
3rd (14) (3.5/1 +22%) Luccia |
3.5/1(+22%) | (14) Luccia 3.5/1, Looked an excellent prospect in bumpers and made it 2-2 over hurdles in impressive fashion in 6-runner listed event at Exeter (16.7f). Probably a little too keen for her own good when only fourth in Dawn Run at the Cheltenham Festival and remains capable of better.
4th (4) (40/1 +50%) Hansard |
40/1(+50%) | (4) Hansard 40/1, Fairly useful Irish bumper winner for Charles O'Brien and made it 2-2 over hurdles for this yard when landing a 12-runner Plumpton novice in January. Proved a let-down when only fifth in the Dovecote won by Rubaud last time, though.
5th (9) (33/1 -32%) Pembroke |
33/1(-32%) | (9) Pembroke 33/1, Bumper winner who left hurdles debut form in his wake when landing back-to-back novice contests late last year. Progressed further when second in Cheltenham Grade 2 but failed to justify strong market support in the County at the Festival there 4 weeks ago. Tongue tie on and remains with potential.
6th (7) (80/1 +20%) Matata |
80/1(+20%) | (7) Matata 80/1, Free-going front runner who resumed progress back on a left-handed track when landing 7-runner handicap at Newbury (16.3f, good to firm) 41 days ago, unchallenged. Will find it much harder to dominate a field of this quality, though.
7th (13) (16/1 -14%) Tahmuras |
16/1(-14%) | (13) Tahmuras 16/1, Point/bumper scorer who created a good impression when winning his first 3 starts over hurdles, including the Grade 1 Tolworth at Sandown, despite still showing signs of inexperience. That form is proving strong but he folded quickly once he came under pressure in the Supreme at Cheltenham.
8th (3) (3.33/1 +5%) Found A Fifty |
3.33/1(+5%) | (3) Found A Fifty 3.33/1, Runner-up in his only bumper and made an impressive start to life over hurdles when making all in 25-runner maiden at Fairyhouse (2m, soft) in January. Coped well with the step up in grade when just touched off in Naas Grade 2 since and is open to further improvement.
9th (1) (12/1 -9%) Altobelli |
12/1(-9%) | (1) Altobelli 12/1, Promising sort who won his sole start in bumpers and is 2 from 2 over hurdles, defying a penalty by a wide margin at Carlisle (19.3f) 53 days ago. Exciting prospect and well worth his place at this level.
10th (8) (10/1 -11%) No Looking Back |
10/1(-11%) | (8) No Looking Back 10/1, Bumper winner who made it 2 from 2 over hurdles in a Grade 2 match at Limerick in December. Confirmed himself a useful novice when runner-up in Grade 3 at Naas subsequently and may still have more to offer.
11th (10) (40/1 +20%) Rare Edition |
40/1(+20%) | (10) Rare Edition 40/1, Successful on his only outing in bumpers and again looked a good prospect in winning his first 3 starts over hurdles, particularly when seeing off subsequent Grade 2 winner Rubaud at Kempton (2m) on Boxing Day. Has disappointed both outings since, though.
|PU| (5) (8/1 +0%) Hullnback |
8/1(+0%) | (5) Hullnback 8/1, Useful bumper winner who confirmed the promise of his hurdling debut given a more positive ride when scoring at Haydock (15.6f) in November. Had plenty in hand when following up at Warwick (2m)10 weeks later and can go on improving now upped in class. Interesting. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 1 race.
As is only to be expected, this is a good quality renewal with the likes of Altobelli and Hullnback bidding to extend winning runs, while Luccia is respected in her bid to give Nicky Henderson back-to-back winners of the race. The last-named edges preference from that trio given she wasn't beaten far in the Grade 2 Jack De Bromhead Mares' Novices' Hurdle at Cheltenham last month. However, it might pay to focus more attention on Irish raiders Inthepocket and FOUND A FIFTY, with the latter just preferred given he has bags of scope for further progression judging by his close proximity to the high-class Corbetts Cross in a Grade 2 at Naas last time. That is not to underestimate Inthepocket, whose highly commendable fourth-placed finish in the Supreme at Cheltenham gives him rock solid claims.
HULLNBACK was a fine second in a Grade 2 bumper at this meeting 12 months ago and made it 2 from 3 over hurdles when scoring in a good time at Warwick in February, so he's the tentative selection in a very interesting renewal of this Grade 1. Inthepocket unquestionably sets the standard on his excellent fourth in the Supreme, but there's still a strong suspicion he'll be seen in a better light when returning to further. The unbeaten Altobelli, Found A Fifty and Luccia complete the shortlist.
In an open-looking Top, the suggestion is NO LOOKING BACK. Second choice is Hullnback, ahead of Altobelli.

3rd (1) (40/1 -150%) Soar Above |
40/1(-150%) | (1) Soar Above 40/1, Narrow winner at Kempton last season. Off 5 months, last of 8 in handicap (100/1) at Kempton (7f) 16 days ago, not ideally placed.
4th (6) (2.5/1 +17%) Dashing Dick |
2.5/1(+17%) | (6) Dashing Dick 2.5/1, Consistent sort who posted another creditable effort when fourth of 10 in handicap at Lingfield (8f, AW) 70 days ago. Won this last year off same mark and likely to be in the mix again. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 4 race.
The softer ground will test some of these over the seven furlongs and it may be best to side with GORAK, who has won on soft ground over this trip and over a mile in 2021. He does carry a penalty again after winning earlier in the month and, although beaten since, that was a better race. Tylos tries this ground for the first time and could be a big danger if he handles it, while Dashing Dick is hard to win with and may have to settle for a place once again.
GORAK had excuses at Redcar on Monday so is worth another chance to defy a penalty given how much he had in hand at Doncaster earlier this month. The reliable Dashing Dick won this race last year off the same mark so is the obvious threat.
4yo GORAK might well have been stymied by the draw at Redcar on Monday and remains attractively weighted. He gets the nod.

1st (4) (2.75/1 -10%) Thunderclap |
2.75/1(-10%) | (4) Thunderclap 2.75/1, Fairly useful handicapper on Flat and being brought along steadily in this sphere, fourth in a Ffos Las novice that worked out before a good second at Huntingdon (15.8f). Big run expected.
2nd (1) (2.5/1 +38%) Artiste D'ainay |
2.5/1(+38%) | (1) Artiste D'ainay 2.5/1, Showed little in 2 bumpers but shaped with much more promise when third in 24-runner maiden at Naas (18.8f, soft) on hurdles debut in December. Unsuited by the drop in trip at Newcastle and wasted no time getting back to form when second at Musselburgh (17.4f) 3 weeks ago.
3rd (6) (7/1 -40%) My Brother Jack |
7/1(-40%) | (6) My Brother Jack 7/1, Modest Flat winner who has found only one too good on each of his 3 starts over hurdles, overdoing the forcing tactics tackling softer ground than previously at Musselburgh in November. Must enter calculations back from a break.
4th (3) (66/1 -65%) Monaghan Boy |
66/1(-65%) | (3) Monaghan Boy 66/1, Fair in bumpers but hasn't got anywhere near that level in 6 attempts over hurdles. Tongue strap on for the 1st time.
|F| (5) (1.38/1 +15%) Waspy |
1.38/1(+15%) | (5) Waspy 1.38/1, Winning pointer who shaped promisingly in his only bumper and did the same sent hurdling when runner-up to subsequent EBF Final winner Crambo at Bangor in February. Likely to improve and has leading claims on that form.
|F| (7) (50/1 -100%) Rouse |

|PU| (2) (125/1 -89%) Last Mission |
125/1(-89%) | (2) Last Mission 125/1, Fair Flat winner but unproven beyond 8.5f and stamina may well be an issue in this sphere judged on his first try at Newcastle.
|PU| (8) (125/1 -25%) National Charter |
125/1(-25%) | (8) National Charter 125/1, Fair maiden on Flat (stays 1¾m) but has made no impact in 3 starts over hurdles. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 4 race.
WASPY finished a good second in behind the now 131-rated Crambo on his hurdling debut in February and Donald McCain's charge could go one better with improvement likely. Thunderclap has been running well in defeat and he must go on the shortlist, along with Artiste D'ainay, who arrives on the back of a creditable Musselburgh effort. My Brother Jack heads the remainder.
WASPY is sure to be suited by further in time but his second to subsequent EBF Final winner Crambo at Bangor in February catches the eye, so he's an obvious choice to go one better. Thunderclap and My Brother Jack are considered the main threats.
Several have possibilities but Hughie Morrison's THUNDERCLAP gets the vote ahead of Artiste D'Ainay.

1st (7) (4/1 -45%) Pic D'orhy |
4/1(-45%) | (7) Pic D'orhy 4/1, Won a couple of Grade 2s as a novice last season and improved again this term with all-the-way wins at Newton Abbot, Huntingdon (Peterborough Chase) and Kempton (Silviniaco Chase). No match for Shishkin in Ascot Chase since but had Fakir d'Oudairies 7 lengths behind him that day. Big shout.
2nd (1) (1.88/1 +16%) Fakir D'oudairies |
1.88/1(+16%) | (1) Fakir D'oudairies 1.88/1, High-class Irish chaser who looked a fortunate winner of Thurles Grade 2 in January when Haut En Couleurs fell last and was 7 lengths behind runner-up Pic d'Orhy when third in Ascot Chase since. However, has won this for last 2 years so must be considered in first-time headgear.
3rd (6) (14/1 +50%) Minella Drama |
14/1(+50%) | (6) Minella Drama 14/1, Smart hurdler/chaser who capitalised on a drop back to handicap company when scoring comfortably over fences at Musselburgh and Kelso last 2 starts but opposable back up in class.
4th (2) (7/1 +13%) French Dynamite |
7/1(+13%) | (2) French Dynamite 7/1, Very smart chaser who ran a cracker faced with a stiffish task when 5¾ lengths fourth of 9 to Envoi Allen in Ryanair Chase (Festival Trophy) at Cheltenham Festival last month. Doesn't have too much to find to make a big impact here and sharper track should suit.
5th (3) (11/1 +0%) Fugitif |
11/1(+0%) | (3) Fugitif 11/1, Looks more mature this season, barely coming off the bridle when scoring at Chepstow over Christmas. Smart form when runner-up in Cheltenham handicaps next 2 starts, including when beaten 2 lengths in the Magners Plate at the Festival last month. This demands even more but not taken lightly.
6th (4) (6/1 +0%) Hitman |
6/1(+0%) | (4) Hitman 6/1, Just denied in Old Roan over C&D on return before easy winner at Haydock. Excuses next 2 starts (reportedly bled in King George) and bounced back with an excellent third in Ryanair at Cheltenham. Runner-up to Fakir d'Oudairies (beaten 5½ lengths) in this last year and another bold bid likely.
|PU| (5) (6.5/1 +35%) Millers Bank |
6.5/1(+35%) | (5) Millers Bank 6.5/1, Grade 1 C&D novice winner at this meeting last season but limitations somewhat exposed in open company this term, well-held fifth of 6 to Shishkin in Betfair Ascot Chase 55 days ago. Others stronger. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 1 race.
Triumphant in this contest for the last two years, it can pay to side with the tried and trusted FAKIR D'OUDAIRIES, who may not be arriving in the best of form after a disappointing performance in the Ascot Chase but remains well capable on his day. Joseph O'Brien's charge seems to come alive around here and, like last year, he can fend off the attentions of Hitman (second), who arrives following a highly creditable placed effort in the Ryanair. Stablemate Pic D'Orhy had been on a roll this season until the Ascot Chase, where once again he was found wanting in Grade 1 company. On the other hand, talented handicapper Fugitif could be an interesting alternative having travelled like a horse with plenty of ability when runner-up at Cheltenham the last twice.
Aintree seems to bring out the best in FAKIR D'OUDAIRIES and Joseph O'Brien's 8-y-o can win this for the third successive season. Pic d'Orhy's winning run came to an end when second in the Ascot Chase in February but he finished 7 lengths in front of the selection that day so rates a huge threat. Hitman was an excellent third in the Ryanair at Cheltenham last month and should be in the mix again having finished second in this last term.
Pic D'Orhy finished ahead of FAKIR D'OUDAIRIES at Ascot but the last named has peaked in this race in each of the last two seasons.

Doctor Mozart is looking for his hat-trick after two wins on the all-weather, though he is yet to score on turf or encounter ground this soft. He can still go well but it's a rarity to see a William Haggas horse in a claimer and IN THE GIVING may have too much class for these. Second on both starts this season in better company, she won at Sligo on soft ground last year and her chances appear second to none. Evolicatt looks the likeliest to follow them home.
IN THE GIVING arrives on the back of a solid showing at Southwell 8 days ago and should take all the beating in this easier race. Doctor Mozart comes here on a hat-trick and is the clear danger, while his stablemate, Evolicatt, can't be fully ruled out.
The one to beat is IN THE GIVING, who won on soft ground in Ireland last year and started off for William Haggas with two good runs.

|PU| (5) (3.5/1 +0%) Chemical Warfare |
3.5/1(+0%) | (5) Chemical Warfare 3.5/1, Promising sort who left his chase debut form well behind when second of 11 in handicap at Newcastle (16.3f, good to soft) 73 days ago. 4 lb higher now but may have more to offer in this sphere yet. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 5 race.
Beat The Edge idled when hitting the front at Wetherby last month and though he scrambled home, it would have to raise slight concerns. ZARA'S UNIVERSE was rewarded for her consistency when winning at Market Rasen last time and, with a 5lb rise in the handicap unlikely to pose an issue, she edges the vote. Chemical Warfare is another to consider.
It could be worth chancing chase debutant GUILLAUME, who caught the eye on his latest start over hurdles and has the physique for this discipline. Chemical Warfare and Zara's Universe rate the principal dangers.
The vote goes to ZARA'S UNIVERSE, who was a clearcut win at Market Rasen last month and should have more to offer in this sphere.

40/1(-21%) | (17) Batcio 40/1, Unseated rider in minor event chase at Clonmel (19.9f, heavy, 33/1) 24 days ago, held at the time but likely to have needed the run. Should be much closer to form with that run under his belt and he was runner-up in this last year.
|F| (5) (14/1 -27%) Final Orders |
14/1(-27%) | (5) Final Orders 14/1, Has been nothing short of a revelation for these connections and completed a 5-timer over fences in comprehensive style in valuable 2m handicap at Leopardstown in February. Shaped as if still in form in the Grand Annual and deserves respect.
|F| (11) (22/1 -38%) Upping The Anti |
22/1(-38%) | (11) Upping The Anti 22/1, Useful chaser who ran creditably up in grade when 13 lengths second of 6 to Flame Bearer in Gr 3 chase (14/1) at Thurles (18f, soft) 27 days ago. Needs to improve again to feature in this.
|F| (26) (25/1 +24%) Cooper's Cross |
25/1(+24%) | (26) Cooper's Cross 25/1, Made a winning return from 6 months off at Carlisle (2½m) in October. At least as good when placed at Aintree/Musselburgh before taking things up a notch when landing Sky Bet Chase at Doncaster. Only sixth there last time (broke blood vessel) and might well get back on track.
|U| (16) (20/1 +20%) Phoenix Way |
20/1(+20%) | (16) Phoenix Way 20/1, Runner-up in a valuable Ascot handicap last winter prior to going one better back ther next time. Better than recent form figures suggest, hampered latest start, and certainly not discounted with cheekpieces on for the first time.
|U| (3) (28/1 +15%) Ciel De Neige |
28/1(+15%) | (3) Ciel De Neige 28/1, Smart chaser who has seemingly been brought along gradually this term, not finding a great deal having loomed up going well in a valuable handicap at Leopardstown a couple of months ago. No surprise if this has been the aim all along.
10th (6) (9/1 +10%) Al Dancer |
9/1(+10%) | (6) Al Dancer 9/1, Smart chaser who returned as good as ever when landing the Grand Sefton over C&D and, having been off since, he appears to have been laid out for another big run, so merits strong consideration.
11th (8) (50/1 -25%) Gin On Lime |
50/1(-25%) | (8) Gin On Lime 50/1, Useful chaser. Course winner. Respectable fourth of 16 in handicap chase at Listowel last September and didn't get far in the Glenfarclas Chase at Cheltenham last month.
12th (15) (50/1 +0%) Top Ville Ben |
50/1(+0%) | (15) Top Ville Ben 50/1, Not the force of old but his mark now reflects that and was a good 3 lengths third of 23 to The Goffer in handicap chase (28/1) at Leopardstown on penultimate outing. Pulled up in the Ultimate at Cheltenham since.
13th (21) (80/1 -60%) Hereditary Rule |
80/1(-60%) | (21) Hereditary Rule 80/1, Took well to chasing last year, gaining third small-field victory in Cartmel novice (21f) in August. Cashed in off much lower hurdles mark at Downpatrick next time and, then shaped well at Cheltenham. Down the field in a big handicap at the latter course 29 days ago but could bounce back.
14th (19) (40/1 +20%) Kiltealy Briggs |
40/1(+20%) | (19) Kiltealy Briggs 40/1, Back on track with 21.5f Market Rasen handicap success on his reappearance in October. Not at best at Wincanton subsequently, though, and others make more appeal in this competitive event.
15th (27) (12/1 +14%) Equus Dancer |
12/1(+14%) | (27) Equus Dancer 12/1, Enhanced his impressive strike rate after 18 months off in 7-runner handicap chase at Hereford (20.9f) in December and followed up in comfortable fashion over hurdles at Uttoxeter last month. Likeable type who is still unexposed in this sphere.
16th (30) (20/1 +0%) Fantastikas |
20/1(+0%) | (30) Fantastikas 20/1, Progressive novice chaser last term but disappointing this time around and has a bit to prove.
17th (23) (150/1 -88%) Hardline |
150/1(-88%) | (23) Hardline 150/1, Useful chaser who has underperformed in cross-country events the last twice and looks firmly up against it here.
18th (9) (66/1 -32%) Epson Du Houx |
66/1(-32%) | (9) Epson Du Houx 66/1, Has looked in form this season, albeit not quite at his best when only sixth in the Grand Annual last time. Hood goes back on but he's unproven over the trip.
19th (2) (10/1 +0%) Burrows Saint |
10/1(+0%) | (2) Burrows Saint 10/1, Smart chaser who hasn't been at his best for a while but finds himself on an appealing mark as a result and should be better for his latest outing at Down Royal. Fourth in the 2021 Grand National, so looks a player if he can lie up with the early pace down in trip.
|PU| (10) (6.5/1 +19%) Ashtown Lad |
6.5/1(+19%) | (10) Ashtown Lad 6.5/1, Took very well to these fences when landing the Becher in December and at least respectable efforts over hurdles both outings since. Should give a good account.
|PU| (7) (16/1 -14%) Il Ridoto |
16/1(-14%) | (7) Il Ridoto 16/1, Useful novice chaser who was threatening another big performance and duly delivered (in first-time cheekpieces) when taking 16-runner handicap at Cheltenham on Trials Day. Solid showing when sixth in Plate at the Festival and likely to give another good account.
|PU| (20) (22/1 +21%) Numitor |
22/1(+21%) | (20) Numitor 22/1, Facile victory at Doncaster (19f, heavy) over a year ago. Well held first 2 starts this season but back to form the last twice and isn't out of it.
|PU| (29) (66/1 +0%) Dorking Lad |
66/1(+0%) | (29) Dorking Lad 66/1, Resumed winning ways in a 20.5f Kempton handicap in November, drawing right away to score by 16 lengths. Has failed to complete on both subsequent outings but was running creditably at Ascot on latter occasion. Jumping is a concern over these fences. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 1 race.
In a wide-open contest only a tentative vote can go to BURROWS SAINT. It's interesting that Willie Mullins opts for this race over the Grand National, which he has competed in twice. Fourth in the 2021 renewal before unseating last year (from a 4lb higher mark), he could prove more potent over this shorter trip, while a recent spin at Down Royal should have left him cherry-ripe. Al Dancer is now 2lb better off with Gesskille than when defeating him in the Grand Sefton here in November and it would be no surprise were he to confirm that form. Ashtown Lad merits the utmost respect, along with the progressive Final Orders. Others to note include Haut En Couleurs, Ciel De Neige and Bill Baxter.
HAUT EN COULEURS produced another highly likeable display when fifth in the Plate and, as an assured jumper, he strikes as the sort to take to these fences, so he makes the most appeal. Al Dancer and Ashtown Lad have both won here already this term and appear to have been laid out for a big run, so they head the numerous dangers in another fascinating renewal.
As always, this will be fast and furious. Gesskille has an awful lot going for him but HAUT EN COULEURS (nap) can defy top weight.

5/1(+38%) | (4) Duke Of Verona 5/1, Last of 11 in handicap at York (16.2f, good to soft, 6/1). Off 6 months. Back down in trip. Can give a good account without posing serious threat to principals.
2nd (6) (10/1 +38%) Croeso Cymraeg |
10/1(+38%) | (6) Croeso Cymraeg 10/1, Course winner. Fifth of 7 in handicap (9/2) at Pontefract (10f, good), having hopeless task from position. Off 6 months. Not out of things.
3rd (3) (4.5/1 -100%) Sonnerie Power |
4.5/1(-100%) | (3) Sonnerie Power 4.5/1, Big career best when winning 9-runner handicap at Lingfield (12f, AW, 5/2) in September, plenty in hand. Wasn't able to follow up at Wolverhampton the following month but remains open to improvement on return.
4th (1) (3.33/1 +39%) Juan Bermudez |
3.33/1(+39%) | (1) Juan Bermudez 3.33/1, Career best when winning 6-runner handicap at Kempton (16f) in November. Below that level over same C&D the following month but remains low mileage and warrants respect down in trip.
5th (10) (2.75/1 +75%) In The Breeze |
2.75/1(+75%) | (10) In The Breeze 2.75/1, Back from 5 months off when sixth of 7 in handicap at Wolverhampton (12.2f, 14/1) 27 days ago, left poorly placed. Entitled to build on that.
6th (8) (7/1 +65%) Party Island |
7/1(+65%) | (8) Party Island 7/1, Seven wins from 26 Flat runs. Two wins from 6 runs last year. Tenth of 11 in handicap at Kempton (12f, 28/1) 35 days ago. Others more persuasive.
7th (5) (16/1 +60%) Oman |
16/1(+60%) | (5) Oman 16/1, 28/1 and visor on for 1st time in this code, tenth of 12 in handicap at Kempton (16f) 37 days ago. Back down in trip. Makes limited appeal. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 4 race.
With Roger Varian's yard in decent form it could be folly to ignore Sonnerie Power, a winner at Lingfield last September and only beaten two lengths on his sole subsequent start. A late maturing sort he may make up into a better four-year-old, though whether he can give 7lb to KENSINGTON is another question. A lightly-raced daughter of Frankel, if she handles this ground she may well follow up her October Wolverhampton success. Brasca could surprise and should not be stopping over this trip.
SONNERIE POWER appeals as the type to do better this term and can make a winning return. Kensington also remains open to improvement and is feared most, whilst Juan Bermudez can also make his presence felt.
It might be worth chancing IN THE BREEZE, who is yet to win for Mick Appleby but is sure to be suited by today's conditions.

1st (4) (4.5/1 +10%) Atomic Angel |
4.5/1(+10%) | (4) Atomic Angel 4.5/1, C&D winner who regained winning thread at Catterick (25.3f) in January and dispelled lesser effort granted run of the race when second in 5-runner Hexham handicap (23.3f) 15 days ago, edged out only close home. This looks a little deeper, however.
2nd (1) (1.75/1 +30%) Thatbeatsbanagher |
1.75/1(+30%) | (1) Thatbeatsbanagher 1.75/1, Building up a very good record at this track, posting a career-best display when landing his third C&D handicap 3 weeks ago. Rider takes off handy 5 lb once more and he's expected to be in the mix.
3rd (2) (8/1 +27%) Ballin Bay |
8/1(+27%) | (2) Ballin Bay 8/1, Some encouragement to glean from his bumper debut effort in December and best effort over hurdles came on qualifying run when fourth in 9-runner maiden at Carlisle last month. Switch to handicaps rates a plus and marked increase in trip could unlock further progress.
4th (6) (2.75/1 +17%) Great Raffles |
2.75/1(+17%) | (6) Great Raffles 2.75/1, Ended last season with back-to-back wins (including this race) and creditable in-the-frame efforts all 3 starts so far this campaign. Possible he'll sharpen up for his latest run at Wetherby 24 days ago and worth considering.
5th (7) (7/1 +7%) Mr Palmtree |
7/1(+7%) | (7) Mr Palmtree 7/1, Dual chase winner in 2020/21 campaign. Missed last season and readily surpassed form of first 2 starts this campaign when landing 7-runner Warwick handicap 926f) 15 days ago. 5 lb higher mark to contend with here on the back of a relatively quick turnaround.
6th (8) (14/1 +65%) Lockdown Leader |
14/1(+65%) | (8) Lockdown Leader 14/1, Appeared to take a step in the right direction when third of 10 at Perth (3m) in June but all 3 starts thereafter where below that level. Comes here on back of 6 months off/wind op and others hold stronger claims.
7th (9) (80/1 -142%) Alien Encounter |
80/1(-142%) | (9) Alien Encounter 80/1, Offered little either start in bumpers and similar story in handful of maiden/novice hurdle outings upon returning from a lengthy absence this year. Needs to step up plenty to play a part on handicap debut. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 5 race.
THATBEATSBANAGHER gained immediate compensation when winning over C&D last month, having been narrowly beaten by The Blame Game the start prior. Good ground might not have played to his strengths on that occasion and it would be no surprise were he to reverse the form with conditions set to suit. Mr Palmtree routed his rivals at Warwick 15 days ago and he looks a likely player once more, along with Atomic Angel.
Plenty in with a shout over this marathon trip, including last year's winner GREAT RAFFLES. It's possible he will be sharper for his Wetherby run 24 days ago and this sort of mark doesn't look beyond him back up in trip. The Blame Game and Thatbeatsbanagher have both compiled good course records and are others expected to be in the mix.
We already know THATBEATSBANAGHER loves it here and he is taken to defy a 5lb rise and win again.

The chart reads from right to left to today's race.
Aidan O'Brien had his first two-year-old winner of the season here on Tuesday and saddles EMPEROR OF ROME in this. The No Nay Never colt is obviously showing a bit at home given that he is out so early. His dam is an unraced half-sister to a US listed winner. O'Brien's son Donnacha introduces Gloucester, a son of Ten Sovereigns who had his first winner with Brighter here the other day. This colt is a half-brother to a smart sort in Great House, a winner for the trainer a few years ago before going on to land two Group 3 contests in Australia. Excel In Space ran well on his debut here a fortnight ago when third to Buyin Buyin. He made the running then before giving way a furlong from home and that experience will be a big asset.
EMPEROR OF ROME is the obvious one on paper, especially if the market vibes are positive. Gloucester is another well-connected newcomer to consider, while Excel In Space showed ability when third in a C&D maiden 2 weeks ago.
It will be a surprise if Excel In Space can fend off all 3 newcomers and the market will be helpful; a chance is taken on GLOUCESTER

1st (16) (16/1 -45%) Apple Away |
16/1(-45%) | (16) Apple Away 16/1, Irish point winner who made a successful hurdling/Rules debut at Bangor in September and has continued to progress since, latest when taking 5-runner listed hurdle at Doncaster (24.4f, good) last month. Yard took this with Ahoy Senor 2 years ago and she is an interesting contender.
2nd (8) (6/1 -9%) Maximilian |
6/1(-9%) | (8) Maximilian 6/1, Useful hurdler who got back on the up when taking 10-runner River Don Novices' Hurdle at Doncaster (24.4f, good to soft) 76 days ago by a length from Stay Away Fay, responding well. May be capable of better yet and warrants plenty of respect.
3rd (6) (5/1 +9%) Iroko |
5/1(+9%) | (6) Iroko 5/1, Taken his form to a new level for his fledgling yard this season, producing a career best when winning Martin Pipe at Cheltenham (20.2f, good to soft) last month. Every chance he will be just as effective over this longer trip and must enter calculations.
4th (13) (4/1 +20%) Stay Away Fay |
4/1(+20%) | (13) Stay Away Fay 4/1, Won 2 of his 3 starts over hurdles, showing marked improvement when taking 20-runner Albert Bartlett at Cheltenham (24f, good to soft) in gutsy fashion last month. No doubt his future lies over fences but he will be a big player here if that victory hasn't taken too much out of him.
5th (4) (40/1 +20%) Howlingmadmurdock |
40/1(+20%) | (4) Howlingmadmurdock 40/1, Won 2 of his 3 starts over hurdles, finding improvement when scoring on handicap bow at Sandown (19.8f, soft) 38 days ago, Remains low mileage but asked a much bigger question now.
6th (7) (28/1 +15%) Marble Sands |
28/1(+15%) | (7) Marble Sands 28/1, Useful hurdler who has won 3 of his 5 starts this season. However, limitations rather exposed when fifth in Ballymore at Cheltenham last month and this longer trip will need to bring out some improvement.
7th (12) (50/1 -25%) Search For Glory |
50/1(-25%) | (12) Search For Glory 50/1, Yet to score in 3 attempts over timber and was well behind when pulling up behind Stay Away Fay in Albert Bartlett at Cheltenham last month. Makes limited appeal. Wears first-time tongue strap.
8th (2) (33/1 -32%) Blenkinsop |
33/1(-32%) | (2) Blenkinsop 33/1, Progressive since switched to handicaps, still looking well ahead of his mark when completing the 4-timer at Newbury (20.5f, soft) in December. Well worth his place in graded company here and it's possible we haven't seen the best of him yet.
9th (11) (33/1 -18%) Saint Davy |
33/1(-18%) | (11) Saint Davy 33/1, Fetched £270,000 after winning sole point start and justified favouritism when landing a Carlisle bumper on Rules debut in October. Dug deep when narrowly making a winning start in this sphere at Chepstow (19.5f) in December and remains open to improvement.
|F| (3) (5/1 +44%) Grey Dawning |
5/1(+44%) | (3) Grey Dawning 5/1, Won both his bumper starts and has a progressive profile in this sphere, taking the step up in class in his stride when winning Grade 2 at Warwick (21f, heavy) in January. Further improvement may be forthcoming, particularly over this longer trip, and he is one for the shortlist.
10th (9) (66/1 -65%) Mofasa |
66/1(-65%) | (9) Mofasa 66/1, Won his first 2 starts this term and got back on track when third of 10 in Grade 2 at Cheltenham (20.2f, good to soft) in January. Ought to stay this longer trip but has plenty to find on form with the principals here.
|PU| (1) (3/1 +25%) Absolute Notions |
3/1(+25%) | (1) Absolute Notions 3/1, Improved in each of his 3 starts over hurdles, latest when very good second of 8 to Good Land in Nathaniel Lacy & Partners Solicitors Novices' at Leopardstown (22.1f, good to soft, 12/1) 69 days ago. Bred to appreciate this longer trip and merits consideration.
|PU| (5) (28/1 -40%) Hurricane Bay |
28/1(-40%) | (5) Hurricane Bay 28/1, Showed fair form in bumpers and upped his game since sent hurdling, his standout effort coming when third in the Grade 2 River Don at Doncaster in January. Made the most of good opportunity at same course since but has a lot more on his plate in this company.
|PU| (15) (28/1 +15%) Weveallbeencaught |
28/1(+15%) | (15) Weveallbeencaught 28/1, Added to his bumper success when scoring over hurdles at Cheltenham in January but hasn't really built on that and finished well held behind Stay Away Fay in Albert Bartlett last month.
|PU| (10) (100/1 +0%) Moka De Vassy |
100/1(+0%) | (10) Moka De Vassy 100/1, Acquitted himself well in defeat on several occasions but is still looking for his first victory and arrives on the back of an early fall in the Pertemps at Cheltenham last month. Difficult ask. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 1 race.
The value may lie with MAXIMILIAN, who skipped Cheltenham but the horse who finished narrowly behind him in the River Don, Stay Away Fay, went on to win the Albert Bartlett. He has the chance to claim Grade One honours on this occasion, with track and ground conditions expected to suit. Paul Nicholls' charge had a tough race when scoring at the Festival and it may be too big an ask to follow up four weeks later, while Iroko has the potential to improve for the step up in trip but will need to take his form to a new level in Graded company. The Irish haven't won this since 2005, though they have a strong contender in Absolute Notions, who ran a cracker at the Dublin Racing Festival when last seen. Others to note include Blenkinsop, Grey Dawning and Mofasa.
GREY DAWNING is going the right way and showed bundles of stamina when winning a Grade 2 at Warwick in January. His shrewd handler will no doubt have targeted this event and he is taken to land the spoils. Absolute Notions will also appreciate this stiffer test of stamina and looks sure to make his presence felt, whilst sole mare Apple Away will be dangerous if let loose on the lead. Cheltenham Festival winners Stay Away Fay and Iroko also enter calculations in what looks a cracking contest.
Cheltenham Festival winner Stay Away Fay is respected but ABSOLUTE NOTIONS promises to be well suited by 3m and gets the vote.

The chart reads from right to left to today's race.
BANNTOWN GIRL was outclassed in the Mares Novice Hurdle at Cheltenham last time but is up to landing a race of this standard. The Stowaway mare had run really well in a competitive mares handicap at the Dublin Racing festival previously, when a touch unlucky in third behind Ballybawn Belter, and looks well worth her official mark of 117. That sets a good standard in this. Broomfield Bijou looks an obvious danger coming here off the back of a good run to finish second at Navan last time. The Walk In The Park looked unlucky then as she had been badly hampered at the third last before running on well late on to get within half a length of We Got This. She had been running behind some smart mares previously and is a big player now in this company. Emotional Damage may improve from her initial effort at Naas and could get closer now.
BROOMFIELD BIJOU showed improved form and looked a shade unlucky not to win when runner-up at Navan last month having been badly hampered 3 out, so she's well worth the chance to gain compensation. Banntown Girl is the obvious threat returning to calmer waters.
This looks like a suitable opportunity for BANNTOWN GIRL who is worthy of her rating based on handicap performances at Leopardstown.

1st (6) (5.5/1 +54%) Diffident Spirit |
5.5/1(+54%) | (6) Diffident Spirit 5.5/1, Dual winner on turf at up to 1m who proved more miss than hit in 6 starts on AW during the summer of last year, ninth of 10 in handicap at Chelmsford 91m) in August. Absent since and another who may well be best guided by the market.
2nd (3) (2.25/1 -50%) Hiromichi |
2.25/1(-50%) | (3) Hiromichi 2.25/1, Three wins from 8 runs last year. Career best when winning 11-runner handicap at Lingfield (8f, AW, 7/2) 18 days ago, doing it a shade cosily. Conditions will hold no fears back on turf and of interest from 3 lb higher mark.
3rd (5) (4.5/1 +10%) Cubanista |
4.5/1(+10%) | (5) Cubanista 4.5/1, Did the job well when opening his account at Yarmouth (7f, good to soft) in June and ran with credit both starts over 7f here thereafter. Not himself with cheekpieces left off (refitted here) at Newmarket final start and still an air of unfinished business about him at 1m.
4th (4) (5.5/1 -10%) Endued |
5.5/1(-10%) | (4) Endued 5.5/1, Lightly-raced maiden. 16/1, respectable sixth of 11 in minor event at Wolverhampton (8.6f) 32 days ago. Switches to turf for his handicap debut and interesting what the market makes of him.
5th (1) (6.5/1 +46%) Shoot To Kill |
6.5/1(+46%) | (1) Shoot To Kill 6.5/1, 25/1, sixth of 9 in handicap at Wolverhampton (9.5f) 18 days ago, looking stretched by the step up in trip. Returns to 1m with excellent claimer booked but he needs to prove himself on this sort of ground.
6th (2) (4/1 +0%) Emperor Caradoc |
4/1(+0%) | (2) Emperor Caradoc 4/1, 6f novice winner at 2yrs and progressed again to double career tally at Carlisle (6.9f, good to soft) last summer. Not at best when seventh in 20-runner Doncaster handicap (7f) final start but he's effective with plenty of give underfoot and not ruled out on return.
|F| (7) (33/1 +18%) Caesar Nero |
33/1(+18%) | (7) Caesar Nero 33/1, Lightly-raced maiden. First run since leaving Charles Hills when last of 11 in handicap at Southwell (7.1f, 66/1) 14 days ago, racing midfield and beaten over 2f out. This should reveal more. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 5 race.
HIROMICHI won with far more in hand than the winning margin suggested at Lingfield last month and a 3lb rise could prove lenient as he looks to notch up a fifth career success. Endued has shown promise on each of his fours starts on the all-weather and a mark of 72 could be interesting as he makes his debut on the Turf. The returning Emperor Caradoc is another to note having run with plenty of credit throughout last season.
A 3-time winner last year, HIROMICHI took a marked step forward from his reappearance run and ultimately scored a shade cosily at Lingfield 18 days ago and, with forecast conditions posing no fears returned to turf, he could well be up to adding to his tally here. Cubanista, on return/back at 1m, and Emperor Caradoc may emerge as the chief threats.
The safest option is HIROMICHI (nap), who was placed on heavy turf last year and posted a career-best effort on the AW last month.

2nd (4) (4/1 +50%) Philos |
4/1(+50%) | (4) Philos 4/1, Had every chance when third of 12 in handicap at Thirsk (1m4f, soft, 16/5) 10 days ago. Needs to find more with blinkers on 1st time.
3rd (1) (1.62/1 +64%) Red Bird |
1.62/1(+64%) | (1) Red Bird 1.62/1, Down the field in a trio of minor events last year, last of 13 (250/1) at Kempton (1m) in December. Significantly up in trip as she makes her handicap debut. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 6 race.
CINNODIN left it late when winning over 1m4f at Wolverhampton in February and with further progress possible now upped in trip, he's taken to repeat the dose today. Sexy Rexy appeals as the main danger having struck the woodwork at Wolverhampton last month, but he was also engaged to run at Chelmsford on Thursday evening. First-time blinkers could elicit improvement from Philos and he can't be left out of calculations, while any market support would have to make Red Bird of interest ahead of his handicap bow.
CINNODIN looked a different proposition on his return (had been gelded) when making a winning handicap debut at Wolverhampton in February, staying on well upped in trip, and he can score again with further improvement to come. Sexy Rexy should be suited by this longer distance and can pose the biggest threat to the selection, with Philos the pick of the remaining pair.
Red Bird is a likely improver but Wolverhampton winner CINNODIN isn't fully exposed himself and he can make it 2-2 in handicaps.

2.75/1(+0%) | (4) Skyhill 2.75/1, Took advantage of a much-reduced mark to score at Sedgefield in December before following up at Catterick (25.2f, soft) on New Year's Day. Shaped as if still in decent heart both starts since and this is an easier race than last time.

3.33/1(+5%) | (6) Henry Brown 3.33/1, Suited by way race developed when finally off the mark at Hexham (24.2f) in September and back to form when second over C&D last time. One to consider in a thin race.

10/1(+17%) | (2) Larry Looby 10/1, Five wins (all under Emma Smith-Chaston) in a very productive first half of the season. Respectable sixth at Newcastle in November and unseated at Wetherby on only start since. Should give a good account.
|PU| (7) (12/1 -50%) Lawtop Legend |
12/1(-50%) | (7) Lawtop Legend 12/1, Showed improved form to resume winning ways at Stratford but off 19 months subsequently and pulled up at Fakenham, leaving him with a bit to prove. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 5 race.
LAWTOP LEGEND was not his usual self when pulling up at Fakenham last month, but that was his first run since August 2021 and he was entitled to be rusty. He has won off this mark and over a similar trip before and may bounce back to his best with stamina at a premium. Skyhill has won over C&D on similar ground and cannot be discounted, while the returning Archie Brown could make the frame.
Having landed a double in the winter, SKYHILL has shaped as if still in reasonable form the last twice, so he looks a solid proposition in a race where the majority have something to prove. Vetoncall and Henry Brown look the main dangers.
The tentative vote goes to SKYHILL, who registered a soft-ground C&D win earlier in the season.

The chart reads from right to left to today's race.
IT'LL DO MY DAY may prove the pick here in a tricky looking contest. He ran well when chasing home the in-form Tawaazon at Bellewstown eight days ago and runs off a pound lower mark now. Seven furlongs looked too far on his sole previous outing at this venue and he looks on a winnable mark over this kind of trip. Hero Of The Hour comes here in fine form and won well, after getting a run, here last time. He got a 7lb rise for that victory and his run style suggests he might be better over six furlongs. Disco Bear showed much more on her handicap debut at Navan last time but that was on much softer conditions.
Sole 3-y-o DISCO BEAR made a solid start to her handicap career when second at Naas last month and can go one better up against older and more exposed opposition. The thriving Hero of The Hour is feared most ahead of James McAuley's Eglish, the mount of Colin Keane.
Three-time 6f winner Hero Of The Hour is opposed at this trip; It'll Do My Day has found his level and will be suited by 5f

1st (11) (40/1 -122%) Punctuation |
40/1(-122%) | (11) Punctuation 40/1, Much improved for this yard/equipped with tongue tie, completing 4-timer at Cheltenham (16.8f) in December. Solid enough fourth back at that venue next start and easy enough to overlook his run in last month's Imperial Cup (hampered before 2 out). Still, present mark demands more.
2nd (18) (18/1 -50%) Blueking D'Oroux |
18/1(-50%) | (18) Blueking D'Oroux 18/1, Clearly always been well regarded (sent off short-priced favourite for Grade 2 juvenile on UK debut) and finally showed why after, having had a wind-op, landed a 13-runner juvenile hurdle (50/1) at Ascot (15.7f, good to soft) 12 days ago. Handy 4-y-o allowance to call upon and he's respected.
3rd (21) (10/1 +29%) Washington |
10/1(+29%) | (21) Washington 10/1, Dual winner as a novice last term and signed off with a creditable third from 3 lb higher mark in this race 12 months ago. Low-key efforts at Ascot/Newbury initially this time around but did fare much better when runner-up at Leicester (15.5f, heavy) over Christmas. Comes here fresh and worth a look
4th (10) (28/1 +30%) A Different Kind |
28/1(+30%) | (10) A Different Kind 28/1, Useful novice hurdler last season and made an encouraging handicap debut/reappearance over 2½m here in October. Not been in anything like the same form since however, including following a wind op when seventh in 10-runner Kempton handicap (21f) in March.
5th (7) (7.5/1 +12%) Jpr One |
7.5/1(+12%) | (7) Jpr One 7.5/1, Highly tried on back of novice hurdle victories (at upto 19f) last season but clearly not lacking for fitness as he made a winning return in 5-runner Taunton handicap (16.5f) 25 days ago, doing it readily. This understandably more demanding but he's still low-mileage.
6th (6) (40/1 +0%) Albert's Back |
40/1(+0%) | (6) Albert's Back 40/1, 9-y-o who boasts a very good record at Wetherby, adding another success at that venue to his tally 2 weeks ago. 4 lb higher mark fine but his overall record suggests he's no sure thing to be in same form here (pulled up in this 12 months ago).
7th (19) (33/1 +0%) Collingham |
33/1(+0%) | (19) Collingham 33/1, Durable sort who has had a good season, bagging a nice prize under this promising rider at Musselburgh (2m, good) in February. Unseated early in the Morebattle Hurdle at Kelso last month and fancied to give a good account for all he's a career-high mark to defy.
8th (14) (6/1 +20%) Go Dante |
6/1(+20%) | (14) Go Dante 6/1, Lightly raced 7-y-o who, having missed whole of 2022 has stepped up with each outing since the turn of the year, well served by a soundly-run race when taking small-field Wetherby handicap 24 days ago. Cheekpieces go on and booking of Jamie Codd an eye-catching one. One to note.
9th (8) (7.5/1 +38%) Knickerbockerglory |
7.5/1(+38%) | (8) Knickerbockerglory 7.5/1, Steadily progressive 7-y-o who scored 4 times over hurdles last year and having made a bright start over fences this winter, he duly ran another fine race back over hurdles when runner-up in last month's Imperial Cup, possibly pressing on a shade soon. No reason why he won't go well again.
|F| (13) (16/1 +11%) Call Of The Wild |
16/1(+11%) | (13) Call Of The Wild 16/1, Won sole bumper start and 2 from 4 in novice hurdles during 2021/22. Encouraging third on return/handicap debut at Ascot in October and he comes here having not convinced in a couple of tries over fences around the turn of the year. Bounce back distinctly possible returned to timber.
10th (17) (33/1 +0%) Fruit N Nut |
33/1(+0%) | (17) Fruit N Nut 33/1, Dual soft-ground bumper winner in 2021 and he comes here boasting a record of 3 wins from 6 starts over timber, successful under this rider at Newbury (16.3f) 6 weeks ago. Suspicion he will need to pull out more if he's to come out on top again here.
11th (12) (18/1 -13%) Ukantango |
18/1(-13%) | (12) Ukantango 18/1, Bumper/dual novice hurdle winner who improved further when second in Cheltenham Grade 2 in November. Testing conditions possibly found him out in Tolworth next start and back to form when third in Dovecote at Kempton (2m) latest, albeit without threatening. Handicap debut.
12th (3) (4.5/1 +44%) Parramount |
4.5/1(+44%) | (3) Parramount 4.5/1, Fairly useful in bumpers during 2020/21 and has gone from strength-to-strength over hurdles this term, making it 3 wins from 5 starts with any amount to spare at Fakenham (2m) last month. Handicapper has reacted but rider takes off very handy 7 lb and he's very much of interest again.
13th (4) (50/1 -52%) Geromino |
50/1(-52%) | (4) Geromino 50/1, Made most of good opportunities to bag 4 small-field chase events last summer prior to finding Tommy's Oscar too strong in a match on final start at Carlisle in October. Returns to hurdles having gone well fresh previously but he may find a few too good on this occasion.
|PU| (9) (8.5/1 +6%) Nibiru |
8.5/1(+6%) | (9) Nibiru 8.5/1, Flat/dual hurdles winner during second half of last year and out ran big odds when second in 17-runner Liffey handicap hurdle on latest outing in February. This understandably tougher from career-high mark, though.
|PU| (22) (12/1 -41%) Gaoth Chuil |
12/1(-41%) | (22) Gaoth Chuil 12/1, Bumper winner last summer and positive start over hurdles, gaining second success in this sphere with a good deal to spare under this rider at Leopardstown (20f) 6 weeks ago. Shrewd stable should never be underestimated here and likely she has more to offer.
|PU| (15) (16/1 -33%) Soul Icon |
16/1(-33%) | (15) Soul Icon 16/1, Has proved a different proposition since switched to handicaps, finding another chunk of improvement when making it 7 wins from 8 starts at Cheltenham (16.4f) in October. Faces another 10 lb rise in weights but comes here fresh and he shouldn't be underestimated.
|PU| (20) (20/1 -25%) Densworth |
20/1(-25%) | (20) Densworth 20/1, Successful on second of 2 starts in bumpers and he's improved with each outing over hurdles, making all and in command when left clear last as he defied a penalty in a Southwell novice (15.8f) 39 days ago. Highly likely there's more to come now handicapping.
|PU| (5) (50/1 +0%) Advanced Virgo |
50/1(+0%) | (5) Advanced Virgo 50/1, Fairly useful hurdler who returned to form and caused a surprise when making a winning debut for this yard in a Cork minor event (2m) 13 months ago. Interesting connections pitch him in here following another absence with very capable pilot booked.
|PU| (16) (80/1 -100%) Tullypole Annie |
80/1(-100%) | (16) Tullypole Annie 80/1, Fit from Flat and caused a surprise when running out 33/1 winner at Leopardstown (2m) over Christmas. Seemingly not herself when pulled up back at that venue in February but she needs to pull out more to defy this mark in any case. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 2 race.
BLUEKING D'OROUX showed marked improvement to win at odds of 50/1 at Ascot on his first start after wind surgery and, although he carries a 7lb penalty for that success, he gets 8lb from his elders as a four-year-old. If he improves again he could be well handicapped, though Go Dante looks a serious rival. The booking of Jamie Codd to ride catches the eye, as does the application of cheekpieces despite a comfortable win at Wetherby, and he may also be on an upward curve. Soul Icon is looking for his sixth win in a row and may well have been saved for this, though any further rain would not help his chances, while Albert's Back and perhaps JPR One are others to consider.
PARRAMOUNT continued his upward trajectory over hurdles with another dominant display at Fakenham 4 weeks ago and, with his in-form rider's claim off-setting a fair chunk of his subsequent 10 lb rise, he looks sure to make another bold bid. This is ultra-competitive however, with the prolific Soul Icon a big threat returned from a short break. Go Dante, Gaoth Chuil and Blueking d'Oroux are a trio of others fancied to be in the mix also.
There should be more to come from GO DANTE. Progressive Parramount is feared most, ahead of JPR One.

The chart reads from right to left to today's race.
FREE FLOWING looks the safest bet here off a nice weight. Richie Geoghehan takes 7lb off his back and he also gets half a stone off the previous winners in the field. The Sans Frontieres gelding has been placed on his two runs this season and despite making no impression on easy winner Demandrivingdouvan at Wexford last time it was still a solid effort to finish third. Sir Jimmy Mac looked talented when winning by a side margin on his debut at Downpatrick in March 2022. He weakened tamely in better company at Punchestown subsequently and it will be interesting to see how he gets on now over timber, on his first start for Mark Fahey. He is a free running sort and this ground is a concern. Singing The Blues showed a decent level on the Flat in England and is one to note on his jumping debut.
FREE FLOWING has shown plenty on both his starts over hurdles and this looks a good opportunity for him to get off the mark. Ossifer Hops and Dinoland could be the pair to give him most to think about.
Plenty of question-marks here, but FREE FLOWING is put forward on the strength of a Thurles second on his penultimate start

6.5/1(+35%) | (2) Got Bright 6.5/1, Not discredited when fifth of 9 in handicap at Lingfield (15.8f, AW, 5/1) 41 days ago. On a workable mark so he's capable of making the frame as he drops back down in trip.

8th (8) (200/1 -100%) Smart Connection |
200/1(-100%) | (8) Smart Connection 200/1, Form went the wrong way on the Flat in 2022 and down the field both outings on the level this year. Ran out in novice hurdle at Market Rasen (20.6f, good to soft, 250/1) 5 days ago. Best watched.
9th (9) (125/1 -25%) Bright Dawn |
125/1(-25%) | (9) Bright Dawn 125/1, Has offered little in varied events so far, merely passing beaten rivals when seventh of 11 in handicap at Newcastle (10.2f, 150/1) 11 days ago. Up in trip but easy enough to look elsewhere. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 6 race.
WARD CASTLE came with a late surge to defeat the reopposing Haven Lady (second) here last month. He escapes a penalty for that success and given Morgan Cole is able to claim her full 7lb this time around, Marco Botti's charge can confirm the form en route to another victory. Kitten's Dream remains on a fair mark and must be considered, along with the Ewan Whillans-trained Billy Bathgate.
WARD CASTLE scored comfortably when getting the better of Haven Lady at this course 10 days ago and Marco Botti's 4-y-o can confirm the placings with this longer trip to suit. The pair look the two to focus on in this contest, though Billy Bathgate has been going through a good spell of late and completes the shortlist.
Ward Castle is the obvious starting point but BILLY BATHGATE (nap) has been banging at the door and this may be his day.

11/1(-83%) | (11) Killane 11/1, Won 3 low-level handicaps in a productive 2021/22 campaign. Not at best this term but is well treated if first-time blinkers (replacing cheekpieces) help him to stage a revival.

7th (12) (40/1 -43%) Robin Goodfellow |
40/1(-43%) | (12) Robin Goodfellow 40/1, Poor maiden on Flat and has yet to achieve much over hurdles, finishing behind Lovin Jukebox and Edgar Allan Poe when a well-held fourth of 6 on C&D handicap debut 22 days ago. 6 lb out of the handicap.
8th (3) (10/1 -100%) Edgar Allan Poe |
10/1(-100%) | (3) Edgar Allan Poe 10/1, Seven-time winner on the Flat who got off the mark in this sphere in 2m handicap at Catterick in January. Creditable third of 6 over this C&D (heavy) 3 weeks ago. Likely to be competitive again.
9th (1) (8/1 +20%) Tonyx |
8/1(+20%) | (1) Tonyx 8/1, Fair Flat winner who opened account over hurdles in C&D novice in April 2021. Very lightly raced and little to get excited about since, pulling up in Fakenham claiming hurdle last time. Return to this venue needs to spark a major revival.
|PU| (5) (150/1 -275%) Mistamel |
150/1(-275%) | (5) Mistamel 150/1, First hurdle run since 2017 when seventh of 9 over C&D in October 2021. Subsequently left Iain Jardine and has been off for 18 months. Can only watch. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 5 race.
Benito is beginning to look well handicapped having won off this mark last year, but his best form is over further than this and he may find some have too much speed for him. Killane is interesting in first-time blinkers with a 10lb conditional on board, but he has been out of sorts for some time, and TONYX may have the edge. Although a character and pulled up at Fakenham last month, she won easily over C&D in 2021 and may be able to make all in this company.
It might be worth taking a chance on KILLANE, who is well treated, particularly when William Maggs's 10 lb claim is taken into account, if first-time blinkers have a positive effect. Lovin Jukebox, a stablemate of the selection, and Edgar Allan Poe were second/third in the same C&D contest last time and may provide the main opposition.
The tentative suggestion is EL JEFE who has trip and ground to suit and has recently been heading steadily the right way again.

3.33/1(-21%) | (9) Unchained Melody 3.33/1, Promising sort. Respectable third of 11 in handicap at Navan (10f, heavy, 10/1) 16 days ago. This step up to 1½m promises to suit and she's one to be interested in from such a lowly mark returned to all weather.
5th (5) (3.5/1 +22%) Pulse Light |
3.5/1(+22%) | (5) Pulse Light 3.5/1, Below form seventh of 12 in handicap (12/1) at Leopardstown (10f, heavy) 12 days ago, racing too freely over the longest trip he's faced.. Tongue strap on 1st time and certainly not one to be giving up on yet. .

12/1(+0%) | (7) Mehsham 12/1, Thrice-raced maiden. Showed first form when sixth of 12 in maiden at this course (10.7f, 150/1) 42 days ago, albeit never better than midfield. Switch to handicaps rates a plus and feasible to think he can do better up in trip.
8th (6) (20/1 +39%) Sapristi |
20/1(+39%) | (6) Sapristi 20/1, Lightly-raced maiden. Eighth of 11 in handicap (14/1) at Navan (10f, heavy) 16 days ago, unable to sustain effort. That was her first start for 6 months and this should reveal more. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's race.
There aren't too many horses running in the Magnier colours off a mark of 54 and UNCHAINED MELODY can gain a valuable bracket here. The Fastnet Rock filly is out of an unraced Galileo mare who is a full-sister to Listed winner Wild Irish Rose, from the family of Islington and Greek Dance. She is obviously no world beater but it was a nice run to finish third to the improver Duke Of Leggagh at Navan last time and going up to a mile-and-a-half now there looks to be a race in her at this level. Cherokee Run ran well on his handicap debut here in February when a close fourth to Autocrat and should be a big player now. That rival has been well beaten at Leopardstown since but that came in very testing conditions and he has to be considered back on this surface.
UNCHAINED MELODY never improved in form terms but was deserving of credit for finishing where she did when third on handicap debut at Naas 16 days ago and, with progress anticipated tackling this longer trip, she gets the nod to defy her lowly mark. Pulse Light, Mehsham and Autocrat head up the dangers.
Navan third Unchained Melody has a decent chance but AUTOCRAT is only 4lb higher than when winning here in February and should stay

|R| (1) (6.5/1 -95%) Cafe Con Leche |
6.5/1(-95%) | (1) Cafe Con Leche 6.5/1, 10/1, career best when winning 10-runner handicap hurdle at Limerick (16.2f, soft) 19 days ago. 13 lb rise demands more of him but he hasn't been with his in-form yard long. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's race.
Connections take 7lb off the back of CARBON KING now in a bid to offset his 13lb hike for a cosy victory at Navan last month. The Malinas gelding has won three of his last four starts and was value for a bit more than his winning margin last time. He goes from strength to strength and can strike again. Cafe Con Leche is another who won with a bit in hand last time and could be a danger. The Camacho gelding was produced with a late run to score by four lengths at Limerick and also went up 13lb for that cosy victory. Holmes St Georges has been running well over the water this winter and it will be interesting to see how he fares back on home soil.
CARBON KING has improved in leaps and bounds since switched to handicaps and might still be a sstep ahead of the assessor. Wee Charlie is another who is going the right way and is feared most ahead of last month's Limerick juvenile scorer Your Honor.
Both Cafe Con Leche and Carbon King have been raised 13lb, so EBASARI is an appealing alternative who goes best fresh.

10/1(+38%) | (10) Back In Tennessee 10/1, On first run since leaving Brian Meehan, showed bit more than previously when fourth of 11 in nursery at Kempton (1m) in October. Has since left Paul George. Others preferred on his return. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 6 race.
H Key Lails was a decisive winner over an extended 1m at Wolverhampton last month and a 4lb rise for that success looks fair, but a chance is taken on GOLDEN MAVERICK. He finished down the field in three qualifying runs over 6f, but this looks a more realistic assignment now stepping up in trip for this handicap debut and the booking of Hollie Doyle catches the eye. Others to note include Equiami and Sundazed.
This can go the way of EQUIAMI, who showed improved form on the back of 6 months off/a gelding operation when third at Lingfield 11 days ago, unable to quite reel in a pair that were better positioned. H Key Lails got off the mark last time and is feared most, ahead of Deep Spirit.
Equiami nearly justified market confidence at Lingfield and should go close, but EMPIRE OF THE SUN can improve again.

EMERIC can land back-to-back victories at the track after a cosy victory here a fortnight ago. Colin Keane gave the Elusive Pimpernel gelding a confident ride then and he was value for more than his two-and-a-half length winning margin over Dark Street. An 8lb rise for that doesn't look harsh. The runner-up is entitled to get a bit closer now on revised terms. Barretstown was also a winner here last time, in early February, and in comparison to the selection a 5lb rise for a head victory looks tougher.
EMERIC justified support in good style over C&D on his return 2 weeks ago so may prove up to defying an 8 lb rise. Dark Street rates the main threat again on 8 lb better terms, with French Company another to consider on the back of his close third under this rider here 3 weeks ago.
A decisive winner over C&D last month, EMERIC (nap) can go in again; Barretstown has a good track record and should be thereabouts

The chart reads from right to left to today's race.
Barry Connell has his team in flying form and NINE GRACES can bag another win here. The Kapgarde mare opened her account in a maiden hurdle at Punchestown last time and that form has been boosted since. The runner-up Law Ella won subsequently while the fifth horse Jumping Jet has also scored. An initial mark of 112 doesn't look harsh for Nine Graces. The wonderfully consistent Optional Mix reverts to hurdles and is sure to run her race again. She could be the danger. Soldaro comes here on a hat-trick and has to be respected. She got another 8lb for her win at Downpatrick 12 days ago and this looks a slightly stronger contest now.
NINE GRACES should be capable of better again on the back of her Punchestown maiden success and can follow up on handicap debut. Soldaro is another who has made a bright start to her hurdles career and can provide the chief threat ahead of Sainte Dona, who did too much too soon at Cork last time and is still in good form.
A competitive event and a chance is taken on PARVOS to get off the mark up in trip on ground she handles.

6th (2) (11/1 +56%) Smiling Sunflower |
11/1(+56%) | (2) Smiling Sunflower 11/1, Latest win at Wolverhampton in January. 100/1, stiff task when last of 7 in minor event at Newcastle (7.1f) 7 days ago. Needs to leave latest effort behind, but return to handicap company should help. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 3 race.
It was always going to be tough pitching BALALAIKA in a Listed race when she was last seen but the daughter of No Nay Never did better than the face value of her finishing position would suggest and she is a strong contender now back in a handicap. Mystic Pearl made good progress last season and is taken very seriously, while Gareeb is another going the right way and gets in lightly on her handicap debut.
Having opened her account at Thirsk in September, MYSTIC PEARL ran well at Newmarket on her nursery debut next time and she can continue her progress on her return. She's taken to see off the challenge of Irish raider My Minervina, while Gareeb could fare best of the handicap debutantes.
Gareeb looks a likely improver on her return but MY MINERVINA is still fairly treated judged on her latest second at Dundalk.

The chart reads from right to left to today's race.
UNLESS ran well on her return this season when losing out by half a length to the highly rated Honey Girl and can open her account now. She was collared inside the final furlong then, after making the running, and went down by half a length to the 102-rated rival at the Curragh. This looks a slightly easier task. The 90-rated Navalny could be the danger now. This No Nay Never filly showed up well when fifth in Listed company here last September before ending last season by finishing fourth in a Naas maiden. She has shown enough to give her a big chance in this company. Ger Lyons introduces Juddmonte filly Smote and markets moves for her would be interesting. The Dark Angel filly is out of a stakes placed full-sister to Showcasing.
UNLESS improved on the pick of her 2-y-o efforts after 8 months off when second in a big-field maiden at the Curragh 3 weeks ago, pulling away from the rest, and she sets a clear standard. Navalny had excuses at Naas on his final start and has place claims on his best form, while Smote is a newcomer to note.
UNLESS sets the standard on form after a big run on her reappearance and she'll be hard to beat if she comes on for that

The chart reads from right to left to today's race.
MADE IN THE WOODS has been in fine form over fences and it's no surprise to see connections try him over timber again now off a lowly mark. The Virtual gelding was runner-up four times this season before gaining a deserved win at Limerick. He ran a solid race off his revised mark at Wexford last time and now has a mark of 96 over fences. He races off the basement mark of 80 back over hurdles. Milajess has run a couple of promising races in maiden hurdles recently and could be a player here now, just scraping into the lowest grade of handicap. Holiday In Kerry ran well on his penultimate run at Clonmel, when finishing third, and is a player in this company at his best.
An all-round improved model over fences since the turn of the year, MADE IN THE WOODS returns to hurdling from a very appealing mark judged on his exploits over larger obstacles and he could well be the way to go with his rider also taking off a handy 5 lb. Handicap-debutante Milajess and Meehall head up the dangers.
Consistent in handicap chases since his most recent run over hurdles last December, MADE IN THE WOODS can exploit this mark

The chart reads from right to left to today's class 6 race.
It took 10 attempts for Spirit Of Bowland to get off the mark but he did it well and is respected in his bid to follow up last month's Newcastle success from just 2lb higher. He was also arguably an unlucky loser when he was short of room over C&D on his penultimate start, so is likely to again go well again. However, FAST DANSEUSE appeals more on these terms and edges preference based on her potential to improve over the trip. How Bizarre completes the shortlist.
SPIRIT OF BOWLAND confirmed the promise he'd shown from basement marks last year when opening his account at Newcastle (7f) 2 weeks ago and, despite a tricky draw, he could well be up to building on that given he remains relatively low-mileage compared to most here. Hostelry is feared, with Non Mollare and Fast Danseuse others to consider. Egoiste requires a market check back from an absence/following wind surgery.
Spirit Of Bowland is respected but it might be worth chancing the well-treated HOSTELRY on her return to action.

The 88-rated CLOUNMACON looks up to winning a race of this standard. The Kodi Bear filly lost out narrowly on her debut last season before chasing home subsequent Breeders Cup winner Victoria Road at Gowran Park. She was staying on over six furlongs on her final start in softer ground at the Curragh and going back up in trip on a better surface should suit better now. Blue News was placed five times from seven runs last season and became a touch frustrating. He had some solid form though and was runner-up three times here so is entitled to be thereabouts again. Phases Of Venus is an interesting newcomer for Paddy Twomey. The Galileo Gold filly is a half-sister to Listed winners Redolent and Pepita.
CLOUNMACON acquitted herself well in a trio of outings last season and looks the one to beat. Blue News and Lady Christa can also make their presence felt.
This looks like a good opportunity for CLOUNMACON who should relish a return to 7f and sets the standard on form

ANKUD was beaten at a short price in Gowran last time but looks worth another chance here. The Nathaniel gelding had run really well on his debut when chasing home Cut The Rope in Naas but faded tamely enough later in January when a moderate third to D Art D Art. He's had a little break since and this looks to be a winnable opportunity now. I Wont Back Down was the subject of a substantial gamble at Thurles on his debut last month when finishing sixth to Factual Fact. It would be no surprise to him come forward from that run. Young Lucy has shown a bit in a few runs and could be place material in this company.
ANKUD has shown enough in two starts to think he's probably up to winning an average bumper, so he's preferred to Fenway park, who looks the pick of the newcomers. I Wont Back Down was strong in the betting when sixth at Thurles on debut and is expected to improve.
ANKUD has the best single piece of form by virtue of his debut second at Naas. If forgiven a lesser Gowran run he should win this

BANQUO showed ability in two starts as a juvenile and, as his pedigree suggests the switch to a synthetic surface shouldn't be too much of an issue, he looks worth chancing on his stable debut/first start since being gelded. Tasever has also undergone the same operation since he was last seen and is another with scope to develop further. Tyke strikes as the most appealing of the newcomers and is worth a market check.
MAHBOOBAH and Banquo start out for new stables having just their third career outing, and both could improve, with preference for the former, whose debut effort is the strongest piece of form on offer.
Tasever and Banquo are respected but MAHBOOBAH ran well on debut and gets the nod on her first run for Alice Haynes.

Colin Keane partners ROCKBURY LAD on his return to action. The Showcasing gelding had a couple of decent runs off higher marks on the turf last season and could be nicely treated now. He competed of a mark of 67 on all four runs last season and having slipped 4lb over the winter he gets his first chance in the lowest grade now. Storm Eric was well beaten in testing conditions at the Curragh last time but had been knocking on the door here previously and could go well again back on the all-weather. Memorial Verse hasn't been far away on her last couple of runs here and is another for the shortlist.
MEMORIAL VERSE has fewer miles on the clock than her rivals and shaped nicely over C&D last month. She can open her account. Alfarida and Maestro Stick head the list of dangers.
CATHERINE CHROI was in good form here back in February when she had little luck in running and she's been freshened up since

RAINBOW TRAIL cost 220,000 pounds after a promising run on his sole point-to-point outing at Corbeagh House in December and now runs in the colours of Gigginstown. The French-bred lost out by half a length to Mint Boy on his debut and that rival has run well to be placed in a couple of bumpers this season. Backtonormal was third on his 'track' debut to a smart sort in Blizzard Of Oz at Cork and he looks an obvious danger. Lucid Dreams is a late starter having only made his debut at the age of eight last month. He ran a solid race to finish second over hurdles at Fakenham and the form of that race looked fairly ordinary. He is entitled to improve though and could grab minor money here.
RAINBOW TRAIL has been picked up by top connections on the back of a good second between the flags and he's expected to go one better on Rules debut. Backtonormal is the best of those with experience in this sphere and Lucid Dreams merits consideration after a solid showing in a novice hurdle.
With improvement likely after his fine Cork third on bumper debut, BACKTONORMAL can get the job done today.

10/1(+29%) | (1) Profit Given 10/1, 100,000 gns Profitable half-sister to several winners, including useful winner up to 7f Paws For Thought and 6f winner With Caution. Belated debut but she makes some paper appeal and is one to note in the betting.
6th (5) (16/1 +76%) Victors Dream |
16/1(+76%) | (5) Victors Dream 16/1, 28/1, eighth of 9 in maiden at Nottingham (5f, heavy) on debut 9 days ago. Up in trip. Needs to have come on a lot in a short time.
7th (2) (20/1 +39%) Brother Dave |
20/1(+39%) | (2) Brother Dave 20/1, Pastoral Pursuits gelding. Brother to 6f-7f winner Bobby Joe Leg and half-brother to 2-y-o 5f winner Dad's Girl and 2-y-o 7f winner Mostashreqah. Dam 6f winner. Yard in form but not a regular source of debut winners.

9th (8) (14/1 +79%) Poppaea |
14/1(+79%) | (8) Poppaea 14/1, 11/1, tenth of 12 in maiden at Nottingham (6f, good to firm) on debut last August. Returns with her yard going well but she'll need to leave that first run well behind. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 5 race.
MOJEYRR showed promise when staying on late for third on his debut at Kempton last month and that suggested he can get off the mark on this occasion. The James Ferguson yard is going through a purple patch at preset and Stormy Denise must enter calculations on the back of a promising effort over further at Chelmsford. Of the newcomers, Harriet's Angel and Profit Given should be noted for market support.
This looks an excellent opportunity for MOJEYRR to build on his promising debut third at Kempton last month. Stormy Denise showed definite promise on her Chelmsford debut and could be the one to chase the selection home unless the betting vibes are strong surrounding newcomers Profit Given and/or Harriet's Angel.
Poppaea can leave her 2yo run well behind her this year but MOJEYRR looks the safest option after his promising debut.

The chart reads from right to left to today's race.
ROYAL TRIBUTE was beaten favourite here on Tuesday but may be worth siding with, with Colin Keane taking the ride again. The Kingman gelding has been very consistent on the all-weather over the winter and gained both his previous wins over this trip. Kuwait Direction ran well when third here three weeks ago but this seven furlongs may stretch the Kodiac gelding, who seems to be best when forcing the pace. Blue Wood ran well when a close third here over a mile a fortnight ago. This could be his ideal trip and the Requinto gelding hasn't many miles on the clock despite being seven.
BLUE WOOD built on his stable debut when third at this course a fortnight ago and gets the nod in the finale. Kuwait Direction and Royal Tribute can also make their presence felt.
A step back up in trip ought to suit NUMOOR who ran with credit on his yard debut and was unsuited by 6f last time

The chart reads from right to left to today's class 6 race.
This can go the way of CLOUD QUEEN, who ran a career-best when not beaten far at Lingfield on her handicap debut recently. The booking of Hollie Doyle should only aid her cause and she gets the vote ahead of veteran course winner Bobby Joe Leg and Hit Mac, who has long shaped as though he would relish a step up to this trip.
This can go to sole 3-y-o representative CLOUD QUEEN, who made a pleasing handicap bow at Lingfield earlier this month and likely has more to offer yet. Kath's Toyboy and Hit Mac are also respected.
Bobby Joe Leg looks booked for another good run but TOM TULLIVER may have his measure now returned to 7f.
Ths is the racecard key.

Horse racing is a popular and historic sport in the UK, with a tradition dating back centuries. It is a multi-billion pound industry that attracts millions of spectators each year and generates significant economic activity.
There are two main types of horse racing in the UK: flat racing and jump racing. Flat racing is run on a level course and is typically shorter in distance, while jump racing involves horses jumping over obstacles and is generally longer in distance. Both types of racing are popular with spectators and bettors, and they take place at various racetracks throughout the country.
The most famous horse racing event in the UK is the Grand National, which is held annually at Aintree Racecourse in Liverpool. It is a jump racing event that is known for its challenging course and has become a national institution in the UK. Other notable horse racing events in the UK include the Derby, held at Epsom Downs Racecourse in Surrey, and the Royal Ascot, held at Ascot Racecourse in Berkshire.
Horse racing in the UK is regulated by the British Horseracing Authority (BHA), which sets rules and standards for the industry. It is responsible for the welfare of racehorses and the safety of jockeys and trainers, as well as ensuring fair and transparent racing practices.
In addition to its economic and cultural importance, horse racing in the UK also plays a significant role in the breeding and training of thoroughbred horses. Many of the world's top thoroughbreds are bred and trained in the UK, and the industry plays a vital role in the preservation and promotion of the breed.
Overall, horse racing is an integral part of British culture and a major contributor to the country's economy. It is a thrilling and exciting sport that continues to attract a loyal following and generate significant interest from spectators and bettors around the world.
