Ray Vonn

25
25/1(-56%)
(21) Ray Vonn 25/1, Finished last season on a low note but proved at least as good as ever after 6 months off when winning at Nottingham (6.1f, good to firm) just over 2 weeks ago, leading inside final 1f. Just 3 lb higher and respected with Kevin Stott taking over in the saddle.
More ability than his mark but blessed with lots of character; no surprise to see big run.

1st (8) Tiriac (11/1 -22%)
Tiriac

11
11/1(-22%)
(8) Tiriac 11/1, Made the frame on several occasions last season and made it third time lucky this time round at Windsor (6f, heavy) 19 days ago. Hard to grumble with a 6 lb rise given the decisive nature of that success and will be a danger to all if able to reproduce that form back on a quicker surface.
Impressive on heavy ground latest; good chance if it's soft or worse.
6
2nd (6) Holkham Bay (17/2 +15%)
Holkham Bay

8.5
17/2(+15%)
(6) Holkham Bay 17/2, In good form on the AW towards the end of last year and bounced back to best with his reappearance under his belt when second of 26 at Ascot (6f, good to firm) 2 weeks ago. Lightly-raced enough to think there could be further progress this season, so he's one to consider.
Not fully exposed and latest 2nd of 26 represented improvement; drying ground would help.

Slainte Mhath

8.5
17/2(+47%)
(17) Slainte Mhath 17/2, Proving consistent this year, finding just one too strong at Ayr (6f, good) 11 days ago. Winner that day has won again since, so she's fancied to be in the shake-up from the same mark.
Conditions will suit and latest Ayr second has been franked; should be in the shake up.

Mattice

12
12/1(+0%)
(7) Mattice 12/1, Ended his 4-y-o campaign with success at Beverley and went one better than on reappearance when scoring at Ripon (5f, good to firm) just over 2 weeks ago. Has been competitive off marks in the 80s previously, so certainly not out of things back up to 6f.
Comes here in top form and a 4lb rise for his Ripon win last time looks fair; shortlisted.
10
5th (10) Jenever (28/1 +15%)
Jenever

28
28/1(+15%)
(10) Jenever 28/1, Won 4 times last year and has been in good form on the all-weather this year, making the frame for a third start in succession at Newcastle (5f) in March. Step back up to 6f should suit so he's respected back on turf returning from a break.
Made good strides from humble beginnings and his AW form this spring is solid; e-w shout.
16

Trilby

14
14/1(+30%)
(16) Trilby 14/1, Won in the mud at Catterick and Haydock last month. Run of good form halted back on a quicker surface at Ripon (6f, good to firm) just over 2 weeks ago but could easily get back on track with any rain only enhancing his chance.
Two impressive wins on bad ground this year; might not get it soft enough this time.
22
7th (22) Little Muddy (18/1 +55%)
Little Muddy

18
18/1(+55%)
(22) Little Muddy 18/1, Shaped as if retaining all ability when third at Doncaster on return in March and ran to a similar level when fourth at Catterick (6f, soft) a month later. This is a completely different kettle of fish, however, so easy enough to look elsewhere.
Has C&D form and ground won't be a problem; needs to step up on this year's Class 5 runs.
4
8th (4) Royal Pleasure (9/1 -80%)
Royal Pleasure

9
9/1(-80%)
(4) Royal Pleasure 9/1, Disappointing on the whole Oliver Greenall & Josh Guerriero last year but very much caught the eye - including the attention of the stewards - when a staying-on fourth of 15 at Thirsk (6f, soft) 3 weeks ago, finishing with plenty of running left. One to look out for from the same mark.
Huge eyecatcher on stable debut when meeting trouble repeatedly; cheekpieces return.
20
9th (20) Beelzebub (80/1 -100%)
Beelzebub

80
80/1(-100%)
(20) Beelzebub 80/1, Made second start for this yard a winning one at Newcastle (7f) in January. Good third over the same C&D next time but form has dipped and took his record to 0-6 on turf at Ascot (6f, good to firm) earlier this month (rider slow to remove blindfold).
Slow starter who is 0-6 on turf; down the list in this field.
14
10th (14) Tolstoy (22/1 +0%)
Tolstoy

22
22/1(+0%)
(14) Tolstoy 22/1, Unreliable sort who ended long losing run at Brighton last September. Essentially blew his chance at the start on his first outing since leaving Stuart Williams (15,000 gns) when fifth of 6 at Wetherby (5.5f, soft) just under 4 weeks ago and others look much more solid.
Bundles of ability but usually blows the start; low-key stable debut last month.
2
11th (2) Champagne Sarah (10/3 +58%)
Champagne Sarah

3.333333
10/3(+58%)
(2) Champagne Sarah 10/3, Bagged sprint handicaps at Newbury and Yarmouth last summer, and further success surely awaits this season judged on both efforts this term, again running well without things going her way when third of 26 at Ascot (6f, good to firm) 2 weeks ago. Capable of defying this sort of mark.
Fine 3rd of 26 at Ascot two weeks ago; still improving but slow ground an unknown.
18
12th (18) Rambuso Creek (22/1 -57%)
Rambuso Creek

22
22/1(-57%)
(18) Rambuso Creek 22/1, Doubled her tally following a second breathing operation at Leicester (5f) last October and stepped up on reappearance run when third of 11 at Beverley (5f, good to soft) last month, unlucky not to finish a little closer given he met trouble.
Promising 3rd at Beverley last month; might prove vulnerable to stronger finishers at 6f.
15
13th (15) Shalaa Asker (12/1 +40%)
Shalaa Asker

12
12/1(+40%)
(15) Shalaa Asker 12/1, All-the-way winner at Pontefract last summer and all 4 efforts this term confirm he's in reasonable nick. Was 5 lb out of the weights here earlier this month and this Class 4 company is much more his paygrade.
Much better strike-rate on AW than turf but eased in grade and likely to run well.
9
14th (9) Gulliver (13/2 +24%)
Gulliver

6.5
13/2(+24%)
(9) Gulliver 13/2, 3-time C&D winner who took advantage of his lower mark back on turf when scoring at Thirsk (6f, heavy) 5 weeks ago, leading inside final 100 yds. Not the easiest to win with nowadays, but he remains well treated on the best of last season's form despite a 6 lb rise.
Has strong C&D form down the years and won well at Thirsk last month; this is tougher.
5
15th (5) Strong Johnson (25/1 -56%)
Strong Johnson

25
25/1(-56%)
(5) Strong Johnson 25/1, Had a busy 2023, hitting the target on 3 occasions. Posted a creditable effort after 10 weeks off when third at Newcastle (5f) a couple of months ago and this is his first attempt at 6f since last summer.
3 h'cap wins last year; promising reappearance (5f, AW) 9 weeks ago; capable at this level.
1
16th (1) Roundhay Park (16/1 +0%)
Roundhay Park

16
16/1(+0%)
(1) Roundhay Park 16/1, Dual C&D winner (including last summer) who returned to form from out of the blue when runner-up at Ripon (6f, good to firm) just over a fortnight ago. Has won at least once in all bar one of his seasons of racing and his turn could be near.
Running himself back into form and has ideal conditions; likely to be heavily involved.
11

Mondammej

33
33/1(+0%)
(11) Mondammej 33/1, Losing run dates back to 2021 and seems to be getting more quirky with age. Not disgraced when twelfth of 17 at this course (5f, good) 9 days ago but the percentage call is to look elsewhere for win purposes.
Down the weights but not easy to predict and others look much safer.
3
18th (3) Zaman Jemil (100/1 -52%)
Zaman Jemil

100
100/1(-52%)
(3) Zaman Jemil 100/1, Useful handicapper at his best last year but has beaten only 3 rivals in as many runs since joining new connections. Can only be watched.
Yet to fire for current stable; down in the weights but may prefer quicker ground.
19
19th (19) Dark Kestrel (80/1 -471%)
Dark Kestrel

80
80/1(-471%)
(19) Dark Kestrel 80/1, Bounced back to form to record his first win for current yard at Wolverhampton (5.1f) 12 days ago, typically tardy at the start but things opening up well for him in the straight. Back on turf but not one for maximum faith given his problems at the stalls.
Got up late to win a 5f AW handicap 12 days ago; more to prove on slow turf.
13
20th (13) Cliffcake (40/1 -100%)
Cliffcake

40
40/1(-100%)
(13) Cliffcake 40/1, Doubled his tally for the year at Southwell (6.1f) a couple of months ago, a strong gallop suiting him (has plenty of winning form over further). This much more competitive returned to turf and both wins this year have followed with below-par efforts.
Good strike-rate but not sure about stall 20 and this probably a shade too competitive.
12
21st (12) Remarkable Force (22/1 -10%)
Remarkable Force

22
22/1(-10%)
(12) Remarkable Force 22/1, Won first 2 starts back in May 2022 and came close to adding to that tally when fourth at Wolverhampton in February. However, he's finished well held on both starts for this yard and the cheekpieces now go back on. Career-low mark to work with.
Losing run stands at 16 and he's yet to shine for this yard; change of headgear today.

13:35 York Handicap (Class 4) 6f Race Class Flow

The chart reads from right to left to today's class 4 race.

In a wide-open event, marginal preference is for TIRIAC, who won impressively over 6f at Windsor earlier in the month and a 6lb rise for that success may still underestimate him. Mattice is another recent winner who merits a place on the shortlist, while Holkham Bay and Champagne Sarah are others with strong form claims. Royal Pleasure caught the eye when fourth on his debut for these connections at Thirsk recently and has to be noted.

Another ultra-competitive sprint on the Knavesmire and having caught the eye with his staying-on fourth at Thirsk earlier this month, ROYAL PLEASURE is selected to go a few places better with headgear back on for the first time in a year. Clearly on a very good mark, he can get the better of Champagne Sarah, a filly that has returned in top form with a couple of third-placed efforts. Slainte Mhath, Tiriac and Gulliver are just a handful of others to consider, too.

Shalaa Asker can go well faced with a drop in class but ROUNDHAY PARK's latest effort suggested he was ready to win again.

14:10 York Stakes (Class 3) 6f Race Class Flow

The chart reads from right to left to today's class 3 race.

ARABIE displayed plenty of promise when a narrow second on his racecourse bow over 5f at Thirsk last month and Karl Burke's colt can put that experience to good use here. Ardeur is arguably the most noteworthy of the newcomers, being the first foal out of a mare who was placed in a Group 2 as a juvenile. That said, Blue Empress and Simmering are also worthy of consideration.

Probably an informative novice, with newcomers BLUE EMPRESS, Simmering and Dark Cloud Rising our three against the field before the all-important betting clues.

A tentative vote goes the way of Ralph Beckett newcomer ARDEUR whose dam was placed in a Group 2 in the July of her 2yo season.

14:45 York Handicap (Class 2) 5f Race Class Flow

The chart reads from right to left to today's class 2 race.

KORKER loves it here and the C&D winner looks to have a big shout again today. The five-year-old was only beaten a couple of lengths in a very competitive contest over this track and trip at the Dante meeting and he may take some stopping off the same mark here. Vintage Clarets was only held by a neck at Chester off 2lb lower 16 days ago and he is another with winning form at this venue. He is considered along with Rabaah, who is sliding down to a feasible mark.

RABAAH could have more to offer dropped to 5f for his top connections and is taken to come out on top. Korker ran well in a similarly hot C&D handicap at the Dante Meeting and is feared. Irish raider Thunderbear is an interesting runner.

Stablemates Vintage Clarets and BROOKLYN NINE NINE (nap) appeal most. The selection is surely well treated granted a change of luck.

15:20 York Group 3 (Class 1) 14f Race Class Flow

The chart reads from right to left to today's class 1 race.

The form of Gather Ye Rosebuds' Listed success at Goodwood received a boost when fifth-placed Madame Ambassador landed the Rothesay at Ayr on Wednesday, and the progressive four-year-old merits respect despite a rise in class. However, RIVER OF STARS won this corresponding event 12 months ago on the back of a similar absence, and she appears to have been laid out for this once more. Trevaunance sets the standard on official ratings and she is of interest now stepped up in trip, while Night Sparkle and classy hurdler Marie's Rock are two others to consider.

A good renewal of this Group 3. RIVER OF STARS won this on her 2023 reappearance and is taken to repeat the feat at a track which evidently suits (also ran well in the Lonsdale here on final start last year). Second choice is Safety Catch who was having only her fourth start when winning an AW listed race last November. Recent Goodwood listed scorer Gather Ye Rosebuds completes the shortlist.

This may be decided between last year's winner RIVER OF STARS and and the upped-in-trip Gather Ye Rosebuds.

15:55 York Handicap (Class 4) 7f Race Class Flow

The chart reads from right to left to today's class 4 race.

A tricky puzzle to solve and only a tentative vote can go to MIDNITE RUNNER. Having been gelded over the winter, Michael Dods' charge returned with a creditable fifth over an extended 7f at Beverley 19 days ago. He wasn't unbacked when sent off at odds of 12/1 in a valuable Newmarket sales race in August of last year, too, suggesting better was expected. This flatter track could play to his strengths and, if doing so, his current mark looks well within range. Both Mr Irrelevant and Diddy Man go in search of their respective hat-tricks and must enter calculations, along with Quiet Resolve, who was far from disgraced in a class 3 over track and trip 10 days ago.

DIDDY MAN has taken his form to a new level since joining Harriet Bethell and he's fancied to complete the hat-trick at the chief expense of Old Chums, who shaped really well under a forcing ride at Chester last time. Top-weight Juantorena and recent Musselburgh runner-up East Bank are others for the shortlist.

The improving DIDDY MAN is taken to complete a hat-trick, with East Bank and Quiet Resolve two others who should run well.

16:30 York Handicap (Class 3) 10f Race Class Flow

The chart reads from right to left to today's class 3 race.

Having relished the step up in trip when scoring with authority over 1m2f at Beverley last time, Terrorise holds strong claims of following up that success today. However, Brian Ellison's charge will have to defy an 8lb rise in the ratings and that could leave him susceptible to some better treated rivals, such as JAYYASH. The Gosden-trained colt made a pleasing start in handicap company when he was beaten just a head over 1m at Kempton, and he is taken to go one better with this extra yardage likely to suit. Per Contra is another to note.

Lots of potential on show here, not least the Gosdens' improving Siyouni colt JAYYASH who can quickly resume winning ways now his stamina is drawn out more. Primo Lara also has better days ahead of him and heads the list of dangers, although Terrorise, Flickering Halo and Colorada Dancer also need considering in an intriguing contest.

An interesting 3yo handicap. PRIMO LARA impressed with the way he went from last to first at Chelmsford and is taken to follow up.

17:05 York Handicap (Class 4) 7f Race Class Flow

The chart reads from right to left to today's class 4 race.

A very competitive contest sees a chance taken on MERESIDE DIVA, who won with something in hand on her latest outing over 7f at Haydock and a repeat of that effort would see her go close once again. David and Nicola Barron's charge has been raised just 3lb in the ratings which could prove lenient today. Riot was a comfortable winner over C&D last time and he commands respect, despite carrying top weight after going up 6lb for that success, although Craven, who finished third on that occasion, could reverse that form on much better terms. The hat-trick seeking Northcliff should also be thereabouts, while Extrication could feature on his handicap bow.

CAROLUS MAGNUS didn't get the rub of the green behind Riot here eight days ago and, granted better luck this time, he could be the answer. Mereside Diva looked very much at home over this trip when scoring at Haydock and she willl be a serious threat if able to back that up here. The hat-trick seeking Northcliff looks sure to give another good account, while Craven is also accorded respect.

The unexposed EXTRICATION is taken to win on his handicap debut having shown improved form in two runs for his current yard.
