8/1(-45%)
(7) Russellsbelle 8/1, Fell late when leading and going best in in a maiden hurdle over 2m at Listowel latest back in June 2024; returning from long layoff; threat if straight enough
Likely winner when fell at the last at Listowel last June; runs well fresh, big player.
LTO Selection:hiden content, hiden content, hiden content, hiden content

Expensive ex-point-to-pointer QUALIMITA might get her turn, having shown consistently useful form this winter. A 30-length winner of a point-to-point before selling for 500,000 euros in April 2023, she has attained Listed-placings at bumper and hurdle level and while defeated in three maidens, Gordon Elliott's mare drops in grade with conditions unlikely to faze her. Russellsbelle was an unlucky final-flight faller when last seen at Listowel last June. She is ideally suited by a sound surface and while she lacks race-fitness, should give the selection a race. Long Gone bounced back from a disappointing Gowran run when running satisfactorily at Limerick earlier this month.

A weak enough maiden and likely a best opportunity yet for QUALIMITA

LTO Selection:hiden content, hiden content, hiden content, hiden content

State Man's lightly-raced half-brother SOIR DE GARDE should take all the beating on his hurdling debut here. The selection made a belated career debut last November when bumping into a subsequent Listed bumper winner and again showed nice ability when finishing third at Leopardstown during Christmas. He will be well schooled and has form on yielding ground. Four-time Flat winner San Aer is probably stretched by National Hunt distances but has shown some useful hurdles form. However, he has failed in 12 previous attempts in this sphere and concedes 8lb to the selection. Kasanova's Dream is out of a French Flat and chase winner.

State Man's half-brother SOIR DE GARDE can make a winning start over hurdles in an ordinary maiden

FAIRYLAND OPERA has run well in three of four runs this season and contests a winnable maiden, stepping up in distance. A grand-daughter of high-class racemare Opera Hat, she finished second to a subsequent winner at Naas in February, where the third-placed horse won twice afterwards. She again ran well at Navan last month and a reproduction of those runs would give her every chance. Knockaneleigh Girl was well supported in the market when finishing third to a stable companion at Clonmel last month and needs to improve to beat the selection. Keep Kool Coko has place claims.

If staying this longer trip FAIRYLAND OPERA (nap) should be the one to beat back in maiden company

LTO Selection:hiden content, hiden content, hiden content, hiden content

Course bumper winner GRANNYS YARIS is a hopeful pick despite having poor hurdle form. She showed nice ability in bumpers and, at today's course in August 2023, scored by seven lengths from the runner-up, who subsequently achieved a rating of 118. She needs to recapture that old form and wears cheekpieces on handicap debut but has had a break since her last race. Mullanour finished fourth behind an easy winner at Cork last month and bumped into a nicely handicapped winner at Limerick in January, so should be competitive once again. Four-year-old filly Set The Tone may have been unsuited by soft ground on recent runs and had shown ability on good ground last autumn.

On the basis of a good run in a Punchestown maiden, LUCKY LIONESS appeals as being potentially well treated for her first handicap

LTO Selection:hiden content, hiden content, hiden content, hiden content

Runner-up in a Listed handicap chase at Navan last month, CHEERFUL CHAP can make the most of this drop in class. A former course winner over hurdles, the Philip Rothwell-trained gelding can register a first success over fences. From a mark which is still 7lb lower than his rating over flights, the son of Pour Moi makes plenty of appeal. The fact that his rider Tiernan Power Roche can claim an additional 5lb off his back makes the eight-year-old of strong interest. As a mare in form, Lilian Bland has to be a serious contender for the Niall Hennessy stable. It would be dangerous to allow her too much of an easy lead around here. Rochestown can complete the placings.

Preference is for JOUSTER who goes well here and is probably capable of better than what he has shown thus far in handicap chases

Navan runner-up ENJOY THE DREAM should be difficult to beat now that she drops back in distance. A former Grade 2 winner over hurdles, the Andrew McNamara-trained mare is undoubtedly well handicapped over fences. Having looked all over a winner before ultimately being outstayed at the County Meath track last time, connections have wisely decided to return to the minimum trip here. The experience she gained in handicap company last time will stand to her back in against novices on this occasion. Recent course and distance winner Be Fierce looks the main threat. The Ted Walsh-trained eight-year-old has the potential to improve on what is only his third run over fences. Media Naranja looks best of the remainder.

The busily-campaigned 5yo maiden IN THE TRENCHES makes plenty of appeal here off bottom weight after his recent Navan second

Course and distance winner PRINCE OF AIR can prove his liking for this venue by adding a second success. A winner on his stable debut at Thurles last November, the gelding was far from disgraced off a 9lb higher mark back at that same track on his next appearance. Dropped 2lb in the interim and with Shane O'Callaghan claiming 5lb, he can essentially race off a 7lb lower mark. Fresh from a winter break, the eight-year-old can take this if fit and ready. Ricky Langford should give the selection most to think about. The Philip Rothwell-trained gelding remains well handicapped in this code relative to his hurdles rating. Point-to-point winner Arthor is another worthy of consideration.

Last year's winner PRINCE OF AIR lacks a recent run but may be able to overcome an absence since December to land this prize again
