The chart reads from right to left to today's class 5 race.
The debut run at Ascot from JE NE SAIS QUOI was solid enough on face value, but given the winner franked the form in good style at Carlisle last Thursday, this daughter of Dandy Man, looks the pick of the bunch at this early stage of their development. Barg represents a yard that has hit the ground running with its juveniles and he is another to monitor closely in the betting, while Latama and Macarone also appeal based on pedigree.
JE NE SAIS QUOI shaped well in a stronger race than this at Ascot on debut and looks the one to beat despite the presence of Latama, who looks an interesting newcomer. Midnight Lir is also quite appealing.
Newmarket raiders JE NE SAIS QUOI and Latama are strongly respected. Barg and Midnight Lir head the northern contingent.

Instinct |
(8) (150/1 -50%)150/1(-50%) | (8) Instinct 150/1, Twice-raced maiden. 150/1 and hooded for 1st time, seventh of 9 in minor event at Newcastle (6f). Off 6 months. Significantly up in trip and tongue strap on for 1st time. Needs to improve sharply on her 6f AW efforts. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
1st (5) (6.5/1 +35%) Dora Milaje |
6.5/1(+35%) | (5) Dora Milaje 6.5/1, Won 9-runner minor event at Pontefract (8f, good, 7/1) on debut last September. This is more demanding but she's clearly promising. Form of 2yo win at Pontefract isn't compelling but she's open to progress. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
2nd (9) (2.25/1 -13%) Rajindri |
2.25/1(-13%) | (9) Rajindri 2.25/1, Promising individual. 10/3, second of 9 in maiden at Beverley (8.4f, good) 20 days ago (Cori Glory back in fourth), clear of the rest. Further progress likely and she's a key player. Clear second at Beverley on turf/seasonal debut; good chance at the weights. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
3rd (7) (33/1 -50%) Cori Glory |
33/1(-50%) | (7) Cori Glory 33/1, Twice-raced maiden. First run since leaving Craig Lidster when fourth of 9 in maiden (16/1) at Beverley (8.4f, good) 20 days ago, running on. Looks capable of winning a race of two in due course, albeit it's in handicaps where she'll likely come into her own. Clear signs of ability in two starts but needs improvement to get off the mark. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
4th (4) (5/1 +17%) Terwada |
5/1(+17%) | (4) Terwada 5/1, Once-raced maiden. Third of 8 in minor event (11/2) at Chelmsford City (7f) on debut 32 days ago. That form looks decent (the winner went in again at Doncaster recently) and he should be sharper this time. Promising debut at Chelmsford last month; bred to be suited by this extra furlong. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
5th (1) (2.75/1 -22%) Tyndrum Gold |
2.75/1(-22%) | (1) Tyndrum Gold 2.75/1, Promising individual. Won 9-runner minor event (4/6) at Kempton (8f) on latest start in December, forging clear. More needed under a double penalty but he remains unexposed and open to improvement for his top yard. Won a couple of Kempton AW events last year; open to further progress; respected. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
6th (3) (3.33/1 +45%) Burning The Bails |
3.33/1(+45%) | (3) Burning The Bails 3.33/1, Promising individual. 9/4, third of 10 in minor event at Newcastle (7.1f), left with too much to do. Remains open to improvement and should make his presence felt, provided he takes to turf. Strong-finishing third on latest 7f AW start; likely to relish this new trip. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
7th (6) (80/1 +20%) Kitten's Bay |
80/1(+20%) | (6) Kitten's Bay 80/1, Once-raced maiden. Fourth of 6 in minor event at this C&D (heavy, 16/1) on debut 25 days ago. Hard to envisage him taking a hand in the finish. Yard also saddles Cori Glory. Only a modest fourth in heavy-ground contest over C&D on debut. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
8th (2) (40/1 -100%) Big Bad Wolf |
40/1(-100%) | (2) Big Bad Wolf 40/1, Twice-raced maiden. Last of 6 in minor event (66/1) at York (7.9f, good to firm) 17 days ago. Probably more one for handicaps in due course. Form of York reappearance effort may not be reliable; others are more solid. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 5 race.
The unbeaten Tyndrum Gold is highly respected on his reappearance/turf debut. However, he shoulders a double penalty and he will need to be well above average to give so much weight away after an 180-day absence. Therefore, it might be worth putting a small investment on RAJINDRI being able to take a step forward from a promising second at Beverley last month. She gets weight from the rest and her turf experience could be vital. Dora Milaje is also considered.
The form of RAJINDRI's efforts on the all-weather last season read well and she was touched off on her reappearance/turf debut at Beverley, leaving the impression that there's better to come. She gets the nod ahead of the unbeaten Tyndrum Gold, who is greatly respected but may find the concession of 17 lb (not taking his rider's claim into account) to the selection a bridge too far. Burning The Bails, Terwada and Dora Milaje are other interesting types in what promises to be an informative race.
Quite a competitive novice event with several appealing types in the field. RAJINDRI is first choice, ahead of Tyndrum Gold.

Zumurud |
(9) (4.5/1 +36%)4.5/1(+36%) | (9) Zumurud 4.5/1, 4/1, respectable sixth of 11 in handicap at Wetherby (7f, good to firm) 20 days ago. Blinkers back on and, returned to a venue where he has performed well on several occasions in the past, a bold show could be on the way. Close third off 4lb higher in this race last year; enters calculations. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
1st (4) (2/1 +40%) Menelaus |
2/1(+40%) | (4) Menelaus 2/1, Good second of 12 in handicap (3/1) at this C&D (good) 16 days ago. Record stands at 0-9 but he has to enter calculations on the back of that near-miss, for which a 2 lb rise is fair. Nine-race maiden; went close over C&D last month; respected in this similar event. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
2nd (5) (8/1 +20%) Ey Up Its The Boss |
8/1(+20%) | (5) Ey Up Its The Boss 8/1, 12/1, bit below form twelfth of 19 in handicap at York (7f, good to firm) 9 days ago. Wouldn't be without an each-way chance were he to put his best foot forward. Never travelled at York nine days ago; ran respectably over C&D two starts back. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
3rd (7) (6/1 +8%) Absolute Dream |
6/1(+8%) | (7) Absolute Dream 6/1, 12/1, seventh of 11 in handicap at Wetherby (7f, good to firm) 20 days ago, not ideally placed. Now 3 lb lower than for his latest success at Doncaster last September, so it would be dangerous to discount this 7-y-o. Has slipped to a workable mark and could bounce back. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
4th (2) (6/1 +20%) Diamond Haze |
6/1(+20%) | (2) Diamond Haze 6/1, C&D winner. 5/1, ninth of 10 in handicap back here (good) 16 days ago, slowly away. Looks vulnerable on the back of that low-key display. Successful off 1lb higher in this contest last year; leading player if he's in same form. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
5th (12) (5/1 +44%) Obee Jo |
5/1(+44%) | (12) Obee Jo 5/1, Course winner. 1 win from 3 runs this year. Latest win at Catterick in May. Respectable third of 13 in handicap (15/2) at Catterick (7f, good to firm) 11 days ago. Unlikely he will be far away, provided his stamina passes the test over this new trip. In good form over 7f at Catterick last month; goes into unknown territory over 1m. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
6th (6) (20/1 -25%) Langton Wold |
20/1(-25%) | (6) Langton Wold 20/1, 5/1, ninth of 10 in handicap at Newcastle (7.1f). Off 10 months and, chances are, he'll come on for the run. Made a winning reappearance last term; interesting on seasonal debut. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
7th (3) (14/1 +13%) Rocket Rod |
14/1(+13%) | (3) Rocket Rod 14/1, Eighth of 11 in handicap (14/1) at Wetherby (7f, good to firm) 20 days ago. Easy enough to look elsewhere. All wins on Tapeta at Newcastle; turf record is 0-8. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
8th (1) (50/1 -127%) El Bello |
50/1(-127%) | (1) El Bello 50/1, 22/1, eleventh of 12 in handicap at this C&D (good) 16 days ago. Appears to be more effective on the AW and transformation needed here in a first-time visor. Yard also saddles Zumurud and Frog And Toad. Down the field in C&D event on seasonal debut; both wins remain on AW. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
9th (8) (25/1 +0%) Bungley |
25/1(+0%) | (8) Bungley 25/1, C&D winner. Seventh of 11 in handicap at Southwell (7.1f, 20/1). Off 165 days and yard saddles a more appealing candidate here in Obee Jo. Made all in C&D contest (off this mark) last August; absent since December. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
10th (10) (9/1 -29%) Sparkle In His Eye |
9/1(-29%) | (10) Sparkle In His Eye 9/1, Creditable sixth of 12 in handicap at this C&D (good, 18/1) 16 days ago, unable to sustain effort. Likely to give a good account, albeit without being quite good enough. Not far behind Menelaus here on seasonal debut; most wins remain on AW. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
11th (11) (25/1 +0%) Frog And Toad |
25/1(+0%) | (11) Frog And Toad 25/1, C&D winner. Eleven runs since last win in 2022. 11/1, last of 10 in handicap at this C&D (good) 16 days ago. Visor back on and he's opposable. Has won over C&D but failed to beat a rival back here last time. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 5 race.
DIAMOND HAZE, who won last year's corresponding race off 1lb higher, strikes as a likely candidate to give his all in his bid to gain back-to-back wins. Assuming he breaks on better terms than on his latest outing, the five-year-old has a lot going for him and looks worth another chance. Menelaus has also shown a liking for this course and is feared most, while Rocket Rod and Langton Wold also have something to offer.
Several to consider in this competitive handicap. ABSOLUTE DREAM's recent form figures do not inspire confidence but he has edged back down to an appealing mark and, having shaped as though still a little rusty on his second appearance of the present campaign at Wetherby, he may well be closer to concert pitch here. Menelaus went agonisingly close to opening his account over C&D last time and looks set for another bold show, while Zumurud is also strongly respected.
Maiden MENELAUS (nap) is taken to open his account. Last year's winner Diamond Haze is feared most.

1st (12) (4.5/1 +47%) Barney's Bay |
4.5/1(+47%) | (12) Barney's Bay 4.5/1, C&D winner. Twenty seven runs since last win in 2021. Fifth of 7 in handicap at Carlisle (5.8f, good, 9/1) 14 days ago. Not out of things. Return to Thirsk looks a plus (sole turf success came over C&D). |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
2nd (8) (22/1 +12%) Newyorkstateofmind |
22/1(+12%) | (8) Newyorkstateofmind 22/1, Last of 7 in handicap at Carlisle (5.8f, good, 22/1) 14 days ago. Others preferred. Most wins remain on AW and he's only 1-33 on turf. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
3rd (9) (7.5/1 +53%) Captain Vallo |
7.5/1(+53%) | (9) Captain Vallo 7.5/1, Eighth of 10 in handicap (5/2) at Southwell (6.1f), needing stronger gallop. Off 6 months. Can give a good account without posing serious threat to principals. Third off 6lb higher in this race last year; likely player if in the same form. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
4th (1) (8/1 +27%) Summer Sands |
8/1(+27%) | (1) Summer Sands 8/1, Thirteen runs since last win in 2019. 11/1 and cheekpieces on for 1st time, tenth of 12 in handicap at Ayr (6f, soft). Off 8 months. Needs a couple of these to falter. Disappointing since winning a notable 2yo race in 2019 but has possibilities in this grade. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
5th (10) (10/1 -11%) J R Cavagin |
10/1(-11%) | (10) J R Cavagin 10/1, 18/1, eighth of 11 in handicap at this course (5f, good) 16 days ago. Others more persuasive. Has done his winning at shorter trips; 0-4 over 6f. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
6th (13) (5/1 +33%) Patontheback |
5/1(+33%) | (13) Patontheback 5/1, Back from 6 months off when good second of 12 in handicap at Newcastle (6f, 16/1) 53 days ago, nearest finish. Remains feasibly treated and can make presence felt. Bit to prove back up in grade and returned to turf. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
7th (4) (28/1 -75%) Rich Waters |
28/1(-75%) | (4) Rich Waters 28/1, Eleven runs since last win in 2020. 8/1, first run since leaving Saeed Bin Suroor when last of 8 in handicap at Ripon (6f, heavy) 24 days ago. Work to do. Trailed home last when dropped to 6f on stable/seasonal debut. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
8th (2) (33/1 -32%) Prince Of Bel Lir |
33/1(-32%) | (2) Prince Of Bel Lir 33/1, 7/1, ninth of 10 in handicap at Newmarket (6f, good) 17 days ago. Hard to fancy based on recent form. Has a question mark over current form but he's well treated granted a revival. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
9th (7) (25/1 -127%) Cottam Lane |
25/1(-127%) | (7) Cottam Lane 25/1, Fourteen runs since last win in 2021. Below form seventh of 12 in handicap at Newcastle (6f, 18/1). Off 7 months. Makes limited appeal. Placed a few times for new stable last season; each-way possibilities. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
10th (5) (14/1 -27%) Shallow Hal |
14/1(-27%) | (5) Shallow Hal 14/1, 8/1, sixth of 8 in handicap at Ripon (6f, heavy) 24 days ago. Blinkers back on. Claims on best form. Hasn't scored on turf since 2018 but ran well on last attempt over C&D. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
11th (3) (5.5/1 -120%) Hail Sezer |
5.5/1(-120%) | (3) Hail Sezer 5.5/1, Dual scorer last term who only narrowly failed to make a winning return in 9-runner handicap (15/2) at Wetherby (5.5f, good to firm) 20 days ago. 2 lb rise fair and holds leading claims. Unlucky second at Wetherby on seasonal debut; respected off only 2lb higher. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
12th (6) (5.5/1 +27%) Late Arrival |
5.5/1(+27%) | (6) Late Arrival 5.5/1, Run creditably in both starts this season, latest when fourth of 6 in handicap at Pontefract (5f, good) 10 days ago. On a handy mark and must enter calculations. Return to 6f looks ideal; enters calculations off 1lb below last winning mark. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
13th (11) (28/1 +15%) Cotai West |
28/1(+15%) | (11) Cotai West 28/1, 33/1, seventh of 9 in handicap at Wetherby (5.5f, good to firm) 20 days ago. Others more appealing. Not crying out for this return to 6f; both wins at 5f. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 5 race.
Only narrowly denied over an extended 5f at Wetherby last month, a 2lb raised mark looks unlikely to stop HAIL SEZER being in the mix and Geoffrey Harker's six-year-old appears the one to beat. He was denied a clear run during the aforementioned contest and the fact he stayed on well suggests a marginally stiffer stamina test can suit here. Patontheback is respected following a close second at Newcastle in April, while Barney's Bay is another to consider.
This can go to HAIL SEZER, who was unfortunate not to score (denied clear run) at Wetherby last month and still looks well treated. Late Arrival and Patontheback head the list of dangers.
Back up in distance LATE ARRIVAL may be the answer off a handy mark. Hail Sezer is feared most.

2nd (3) (0.67/1 +0%) Lady Rascal |
0.67/1(+0%) | (3) Lady Rascal 0.67/1, Promising type. 11/4, career best when winning 6-runner minor event at Salisbury (9.9f, good to firm) 9 days ago, well positioned. 5 lb rise fair enough and, with the likelihood of more to come over this new trip, she's the one to beat. Placed in big field on last month's handicap debut and has since won a 1m2f classified. |

One to consider back at this more realistic level. Yard also saddles Grain of Hope. Found Listed race far too hot last time but was in good form in AW handicaps beforehand. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 5 race.
Lady Rascal recorded a staying-on success in a classified stakes at Salisbury last month, but the daughter of Nathaniel was beaten seven lengths at Newbury off a 5lb lower mark on her penultimate run. Therefore, the vote goes to handicap debutant FOLK STAR. Her dam won a Grade 1 in America over 1m 2f and was only narrowly denied in the Lillie Langtry during her career, so David Simcock's inmate looks set to progress up in distance. The grade-dropping Fox Flame completes the shortlist.
The way looks clear for LADY RASCAL to add to her recent success at Salisbury where, once again, she left the impression that moving up to this trip would be very much in her favour. Fox Flame understandably struggled in the Lingfield Oaks Trial last month and is likely to give it a good shot back in calmer waters. Handicap-debutante Folk Star is also of interest.
Handicap debutante FOLK STAR showed only minor promise in three 1m novice races but might be seen in a much better light over 1m4f.

9th (7) (3.33/1 +63%) Jamih |
3.33/1(+63%) | (7) Jamih 3.33/1, C&D winner. Creditable fourth of 9 in handicap at Beverley (12.1f, good to firm, 7/1) 5 days ago. Cheekpieces back on. Each-way claims. C&D winner in 2022; close 4th off this 2lb higher mark at Beverley last week; respected. |

10th (10) (25/1 -56%) The Writer |

33/1(-106%) | (11) The Resdev Way 33/1, Twelve runs since last win in 2022. 11/1, last of 11 in handicap at Wolverhampton (16.6f) 41 days ago. Back down in trip. Hard to fancy. Has won 12 of his 86 Flat starts; recent efforts uninspiring; plenty to prove at present. |

12th (2) (10/1 -100%) Purple Ice |
10/1(-100%) | (2) Purple Ice 10/1, Belatedly off the mark when landing 7-runner handicap (10/3) at Newcastle (10.2f) 34 days ago. Just 2 lb higher now and not taken lightly. Off the mark on AW last time (1m2f); seems to stay 1m4f; below par last few turf starts. |

13th (6) (50/1 -127%) Wheal Kitty |
50/1(-127%) | (6) Wheal Kitty 50/1, Course winner. 14/1, last of 9 in handicap at Redcar (10f, good) 7 days ago. Up in trip. Others more persuasive. 1m winner; fair run over 1m1f runs back; tailed off over 1m2f last week; first run at 1m4f. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 6 race.
PURPLE ICE justified favouritism when getting up to lead in the dying strides at Newcastle last month and he looks capable of shrugging off a 2lb rise back on turf. C&D winner Bollin Margaret returned to form when denied by a neck at Redcar last Monday and she is feared most. Jamih and Visitant arrive in fair form and can't be discounted either.
BOLLIN MARGARET has been cut plenty of slack by the handicapper and posted her best effort for some time when runner-up at Redcar last week. She is fancied to go one better here. Purple Ice and Streetscape can also make their presence felt.
These conditions are ideal for C&D winner JAMIH who shaped as though a win was imminent when a close fourth at Beverley last week.

The chart reads from right to left to today's class 6 race.
CRIME FICTION responded well to first-time cheekpieces when coming from the rear to triumph at Musselburgh last month and Adrian Nicholls' filly looks to have been found a suitable opportunity to complete a double, with a 2lb nudge in the ratings more than fair. Exceed remains a maiden after eight appearances, but he can't be discounted in his current form. Cheyenne Nation and Desert Illusion make most appeal of the remainder.
CRIME FICTION represents a stable going well and improved to score at Musselburgh 3 weeks ago, so she's preferred to Desert Illusion in what could be a tightly-knit affair. Exceed also warrants respect.
With the return to a bare 5f looking ideal, DESERT ILLUSION could well get off the mark. Consistent Exceed is second choice.
Ths is the racecard key.
