1st (6) (5/1 +64%) The Skiffle King |
5/1(+64%) | (6) The Skiffle King 5/1, Equipped with first-time cheekpieces when getting off the mark in 10-runner handicap at Southwell in February. Good third at Huntingdon next time but struggled next 2 starts. Off 7 months. Makes chase debut. Soft ground is a worry and he goes without the cheekpieces that were working well. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
2nd (3) (5/2 +9%) Ali Star Bert |
5/2(+9%) | (3) Ali Star Bert 5/2, Landed a gamble on just his second start over fences at Uttoxeter and impressive when following up at Chepstow (26.2f, good to soft) in February. Mixed record since but better than ever when resuming winning ways here (24f) 19 days ago. Versatile ground-wise and returns here after a return to form over 3m (heavy). |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
3rd (5) (7/4 +56%) Concrete King |
7/4(+56%) | (5) Concrete King 7/4, Four-time winner between the flags but he's 0-14 under Rules. However, has fallen to a very attractive mark and took a step back in the right direction when third at Ffos Las last month. Tongue strap on 1st time. Ran well when beaten 10l at Ffos Las and the winner went in again this week. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
4th (1) (11/2 -100%) Rostello |
11/2(-100%) | (1) Rostello 11/2, Won twice over fences last season and resumed winning ways after 3 months off at Hexham 5 weeks ago. However, it wasn't a particularly likeable performance (again looked awkward off the bridle). Raised a fair 5lb for his Hexham win but consistency is not his forte. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
5th (2) (6/1 -200%) Largy Nights |
6/1(-200%) | (2) Largy Nights 6/1, Stepped up on comeback run to register a second success over fences at Sedgefield 4 weeks ago. 8 lb higher now still lightly raced for his age. Stays well, as he showed when 12l to the good over 3m3f at Sedgefield a month ago. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
6th (7) (150/1 -127%) Moroval |
150/1(-127%) | (7) Moroval 150/1, Sprang a major surprise when 100/1 winner at Southwell last year but well held since, including on return. 11 lb out of the handicap. Only 1-34 under rules and was pulled up behind Ali Star Bert here last time. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 5 race.
The new training partnership of Dr Richard Newland and Jamie Insole got off to a flying start earlier in the week and it would come as no surprise to see ROSTELLO score for them here. An experienced chaser, the selection showed he retains enthusiasm with a gallant success at Hexham last month and is a must for consideration off just 5lb higher. Sedgefield winner Largy Nights is respected along with Concrete King.
CONCRETE KING is potentially well treated nowadays and took a step back in the right direction when third at Ffos Las, so can fend off last-time-out winners Ali Star Bert, Largy Nights and Rostello.
Charlie Longsdon's LARGY NIGHTS did it well at Sedgefield and he's by no means exposed as a stayer.

1st (2) (10/11 +55%) Gardener |
10/11(+55%) | (2) Gardener 10/11, Fairly useful in bumpers in Ireland and off the mark in Leicester novice hurdle last December. Didn't find any progress switched to handicaps, though possibly needed the run on his latest outing. Remains capable of better as he goes chasing on first start since leaving Alex Hales. Novice hurdle winner and now kicks off over fences for new trainer Olly Murphy; respected. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
2nd (4) (7/2 +0%) Secret Plan |
7/2(+0%) | (4) Secret Plan 7/2, Left his hurdling debut form behind when runner-up in Taunton maiden in March and shaped encouragingly when fourth at Ffos Las (21.9f) on his return. However, failed to come on for that effort at Chepstow last time and the drop in trip might not be ideal on his chase debut. Some promise over hurdles but bred to be a chaser; may want further but respected. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
3rd (3) (9/2 -64%) Arlo |
9/2(-64%) | (3) Arlo 9/2, Fair hurdler for Stuart Crawford in Ireland and, after 18 months off, showed that he retains plenty of ability when third in Sedgefield maiden in October. Had made the frame on his only start in Irish points, so could build on his latest effort sent chasing. Third in a maiden hurdle on belated stable debut; entitled to make a chaser. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|U| (1) (9/2 -80%) Couldbeaweapon |
9/2(-80%) | (1) Couldbeaweapon 9/2, Improved again when making all in handicap hurdle at Worcester last October and placed on his next 4 starts, before turning in a lacklustre effort on his final outing of the campaign. However, he appeals as the type to make a chaser, so he could bounce back on his return. Only 1-10 over hurdles and he's 12lb higher than for his sole win; chase debut. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 4 race.
Arlo, Couldbeaweapon and Gardener reached a comparable level over hurdles and are evenly matched as they set out to enhance their profiles over fences. However, given the probability of testing ground being the order of the day, SECRET PLAN could take advantage of the small amount of weight he receives from his three rivals. Having posted his best effort over timber on heavy, the Evan Williams-trained gelding is set to encounter ideal conditions and is fancied to make a winning start in this discipline.
GARDENER didn't go on as hoped switched to handicaps over hurdles, but he possibly needed the run after 9 months off last time and he could yet do better over fences. He is taken to make a winning stable/chase debut, with Arlo next best having shaped encouragingly on his reappearance, ahead of Couldbeaweapon.
It could be that SECRET PLAN will want further over fences but he's still worth chancing on his first attempt.

1st (2) (4/9 +71%) Castle Ivers |
4/9(+71%) | (2) Castle Ivers 4/9, €25,000 3-y-o, £95,000 4-y-o, Malinas gelding. Half-brother to useful hurdler/smart chaser Max Ward and fairly useful hurdler/chaser Khage. Easy winner sole start in Irish points (May 14). Likely type. Bought for £95,000 after winning a 3m Irish point in May; market may guide. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
2nd (1) (15/8 +32%) Tap N Go Leo |
15/8(+32%) | (1) Tap N Go Leo 15/8, Made an impressive start when landing a 15-runner bumper at Hereford 26 days ago and, with improvement on the cards, he's one to consider. Looked in a bit of bother turning for home but stayed on best at Hereford (good). |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
3rd (3) (50/1 -25%) Shuile Warrior |
50/1(-25%) | (3) Shuile Warrior 50/1, Black Sam Bellamy gelding. Dam unraced, from family of smart staying chaser Trafford Lad and Stayers Hurdle winner Shuil Ar Aghaidh. Fourth foal of an unraced dam; bred to stay well so perhaps best watched in a bumper. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 5 race.
Expensive purchases Western Harmony and CASTLE IVERS both captured the imagination when they both won at the same Ballindenisk point-to-point fixture in May. While the former is respected on debut for the Nicky Henderson yard, the latter has an equal amount of scope to develop under Rules and shades preference after registering a slightly quicker time between the flags. Hereford bumper winner Tap N Go Leo shoulders a 7lb penalty, so Shuile Warrior is earmarked for third spot on his racecourse bow.
WESTERN HARMONY has been picked up for six figures after landing an Irish point and he's worth chancing to make a successful Rules debut at the likely expense of Castle Ivers, who fits a similar mould. Tap N Go Leo is also considered after scoring on debut at Hereford.
This may concern WESTERN HARMONY and Castle Ivers, who won their respective divisions of the same point in Ireland back in May.

1st (10) (11/5 +12%) Tommie Gun |
11/5(+12%) | (10) Tommie Gun 11/5, Much better effort in bumpers when 6 lengths second of 13 at Newbury (2m, good to soft) last month. Should be up to making his presence felt in a race like this now hurdling. Second in a Newbury bumper last month and looks a nice prospect for hurdles. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
2nd (8) (7/1 +42%) Schmilsson |
7/1(+42%) | (8) Schmilsson 7/1, Fairly useful on Flat for Andrew Balding but possibly more one for handicaps in this sphere judged on his 2 efforts so far. Beaten in the region of 20l in his two hurdles and Sean Bowen jumps ship to a stablemate. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
3rd (4) (6/5 +80%) Colonel Whizz |
6/5(+80%) | (4) Colonel Whizz 6/5, Shaped like a stayer when runner-up in bumper at Market Rasen in May. Better effort over hurdles in recent months when second over 2½m at Fakenham 5 weeks ago. Isn't sure to benefit from this drop back to 2m but he should still figure in a race lacking depth. Drop in distance not sure to suit but he's one of the better options on form. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
4th (14) (9/2 +78%) Whisperonthewind |
9/2(+78%) | (14) Whisperonthewind 9/2, Posted a promising debut second in bumper at Warwick a year ago but has disappointingly failed to build on that in her 3 starts since, finishing a well-held fifth on her Exeter hurdle debut/reappearance 4 weeks ago. Cheekpieces are added now. Hasn't progressed from her debut second in a bumper and has no obvious form claims. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
5th (7) (125/1 -150%) Saint Vic |
125/1(-150%) | (7) Saint Vic 125/1, 33/1, last of 16 in bumper (33/1) at Chepstow (2m, soft) on debut 47 days ago. Can only watch now switching to hurdles. 33-1 when barely sighted and tailed off in a Chepstow bumper. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
6th (12) (125/1 -25%) Warrior's Fate |
125/1(-25%) | (12) Warrior's Fate 125/1, Placed on last of 3 starts in Irish points but pulled up on his 25f Huntingdon hurdle debut 22 days ago. Drops markedly in trip now. At 50-1 he dropped right out before pulling up in a 3m1f maiden at Huntingdon. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
7th (2) (25/1 +0%) Blow Your Horn |
25/1(+0%) | (2) Blow Your Horn 25/1, Fairly useful handicapper on Flat (stays 2¼m) who recorded a hat-trick in the summer. Off nearly 3 months before a never-dangerous tenth on his hurdles debut at Hereford 26 days ago. Will need to leave that well behind. Wasn't flying on the Flat before a forgettable hurdling debut at Hereford. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
8th (9) (50/1 +24%) Stardhem |
50/1(+24%) | (9) Stardhem 50/1, 40/1, fourteenth of 17 in bumper at Wincanton (15f, soft) on debut 36 days ago. Always out the back at Wincanton (bumper) and didn't show anything like enough. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
9th (13) (150/1 +0%) Gladys Eva Jane |
150/1(+0%) | (13) Gladys Eva Jane 150/1, Showed ability in bumpers, albeit without looking genuine, and having changed hands for only £5,000 in August she offered precious little on her hurdles debut at Hereford. Went off at 200-1 for hurdling debut at Hereford and achieved nothing. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
10th (6) (300/1 -200%) Pearly King |
300/1(-200%) | (6) Pearly King 300/1, 80/1, last of 15 in bumper (80/1) at Hereford (2m, good to soft) on debut 26 days ago. Outsider now hurdling. 80-1 and never counted in a modest Hereford bumper (good). |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
11th (3) (300/1 -100%) Clarehill |
300/1(-100%) | (3) Clarehill 300/1, Maiden Irish pointer who didn't shape with any obvious encouragement on last month's Market Rasen hurdle debut. Modest pointer and 200-1 when tailed off in a maiden at Market Rasen (good to soft). |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
12th (11) (28/1 +30%) Total Lockdown |
28/1(+30%) | (11) Total Lockdown 28/1, Fair on Flat (stays 1½m) but might be more one for any handicaps in this sphere if his first attempt at Huntingdon is any guide. Limited on the Flat and failed to offer much on hurdling debut when 100-1. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|PU| (5) (150/1 -127%) Great Warford |
150/1(-127%) | (5) Great Warford 150/1, Well held in a Carlisle bumper and Hexham novice hurdle last month. Looks more one for the longer term. Beaten a distance in his bumper and sole novice hurdle; should be outclassed. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 4 race.
Trainer Nicky Henderson will be disappointed if the well-bred BHALOO doesn't open his account over timber. The bumper winner chased home a couple of useful prospects on his hurdling bow last month and rates the one they all have to beat on that form. Colonel Whizz, who hit the woodwork at Fakenham, is the main danger. Stardhem didn't show much on his sole bumper start, but he is bred to appreciate the switch to hurdles.
This looks to represent a good opportunity for BHALOO to build on a promising opening run over hurdles at Kempton. Tommie Gun shaped quite well when runner-up in a Newbury bumper last month and is preferred for the forecast spot to Colonel Whizz, who may not be ideally suited by the return to 2m.
Only three really appeal as feasible winners. BHALOO is hard to resist after shaping so promisingly in a much stronger race at Kempton.

1st (2) (9/5 +10%) Bugise Seagull |
9/5(+10%) | (2) Bugise Seagull 9/5, £95,000 purchase after finishing runner-up on second of 2 starts in Irish points (Nov 2022). Took a year to get back to the track but he looked a nice prospect when landing 15-runner novice at Catterick 3 weeks ago. Open to plenty of progress. Bright start to hurdle career when romping home at Catterick (2m3f); more to come. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
2nd (1) (5/4 +23%) Supremely West |
5/4(+23%) | (1) Supremely West 5/4, Unbeaten in bumpers and bright start over hurdles in recent months, making it 2 wins from last 3 starts in a Sedgefield novice (19.8f) last month. Double penalty to carry but he can leave bare form behind. Won all 3 bumpers; unextended on latest 2 hurdle runs over 2m1f and 2m4f; improve further. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
3rd (4) (7/2 +22%) High Treason |
7/2(+22%) | (4) High Treason 7/2, From a good family and made a positive start when second in a Ffos Las bumper. Unable to build on that when third at Chepstow 8 months ago but this step up in trip is sure to suit now hurdling. Looked a stout stayer in both bumpers; this trip should suit better on switch to hurdles. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
4th (5) (14/1 -40%) Just In A Bit |
14/1(-40%) | (5) Just In A Bit 14/1, £14,000 3-y-o, first foal, dam, little show in bumpers, half-sister to fairly useful hurdler (stayed 3m) Romeo Brown out of useful 2m-2¼m hurdle winner Santia. Placed both starts in points, runner-up latest (Apr 30). Jumps pedigree; some promise in the second of two points; up against it on hurdle debut. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
5th (7) (400/1 -300%) Willwekeephim |
400/1(-300%) | (7) Willwekeephim 400/1, Well held in 3 bumpers in Ireland for Peter John Flood and offered little sent hurdling for this yard. Modest form in bumpers and maiden hurdles; more at home when switching to handicaps. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|PU| (6) (150/1 -127%) The Breadman |
150/1(-127%) | (6) The Breadman 150/1, Conduit gelding. Half-brother to 4 winners, including useful hurdler/chaser The Jam Man. Dam Italian 1¼m winner. Pedigree mostly about the Flat but one sibling is smart jumper The Jam Man; belated debut. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 4 race.
SUPREMELY WEST was able to comprehensively defy a penalty when winning at Sedgefield last month and the progressive son of Westerner might be a tough nut to crack once again. That said, Bugise Seagull and Thank You Blue both made successful hurdling debuts last time so they must be respected in receipt of 4lb from the selection. High Treason completes the shortlist.
BUGISE SEAGULL was well prepared following a year off the track when winning at Catterick 3 weeks ago and, with the promise of more to come, the 4 lb he receives from Supremely West may prove decisive. High Treason is bred to relish this trip now hurdling and he commands respect, too.
The three previous winners all have something to recommend them but SUPREMELY WEST can bring up the three-timer over hurdles.

1st (4) (15/8 +6%) Walk Of No Shame |
15/8(+6%) | (4) Walk Of No Shame 15/8, A two-time scorer last term and she comes here in good nick too, third of 17 in handicap hurdle at Warwick (16f, heavy) 40 days ago. Merits consideration once more for last year's winning yard. Bumper/novice hurdle winner; not gone on in handicaps; promising 3rd back at 2m latest. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
2nd (1) (5/4 +38%) Oakley Dancer |
5/4(+38%) | (1) Oakley Dancer 5/4, Got off the mark at Chepstow in March and defied a penalty in Newton Abbot novice two months later. Resumed from 6 months off with an excellent third on her handicap bow at Leicester so she's a player. Two novice wins before creditable 3rd to well-treated rival on handicap debut; respected. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
3rd (3) (5/2 +55%) Ravenscar |
5/2(+55%) | (3) Ravenscar 5/2, Dual 2m scorer last season who arrives on the back of a respectable third of 12 in handicap hurdle at Newcastle (16.9f, good to soft) 24 days ago. In the mix off a 2 lb lower mark. Dual winner early this year; signs of returning to form latest; on winning mark. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 4 race.
OAKLEY DANCER found it difficult getting through the heavy ground at Leicester last month, although she still performed with credit, and arguably sets the standard on the form of her commanding successes at Chepstow and Newton Abbot. Walk Of No Shame may be winless since February but she has been in consistent form of late, while Shelikesthelights is capable on her day.
A case can be made for all of the quartet but the vote goes to OAKLEY DANCER who posted an excellent third on her seasonal return at Leicester and can build on it to quickly resume winning ways. Jonjo O'Neill captured this prize 12 months ago and his in-form mare Walk of No Shame is next on the list ahead of the consistent Ravenscar.
Walk Of No Shame was a promising 3rd on the return to 2m last time but RAVENSCAR also has a good deal to recommend her.

1st (7) (4/1 +0%) Realisation |
4/1(+0%) | (7) Realisation 4/1, Picked up for £130,000 after finishing second on sole start between the flags and she made a winning Rules debut in a bumper at Bangor. Fitted with a first-time tongue strap when a very good third of 13 in 2m4f Hereford maiden hurdle last month. Player now handicapping. Good winner of useful bumper in 2022; improved on 2nd hurdle start; should do better yet. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
2nd (5) (7/2 +13%) Sister Michael |
7/2(+13%) | (5) Sister Michael 7/2, Opened his account over C&D in May, 2022, but off for 13 months since posting a good C&D second on his final run for Fergal O'Brien. Handily weighted on his comeback run for new yard and worth a market check. Solid on C&D form for Fergal O'Brien but off for over a year; market can guide; new yard. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
3rd (3) (11/4 +8%) Globe Player |
11/4(+8%) | (3) Globe Player 11/4, Fair form shown when placed on all his three runs, posting a solid third of 7 in novice hurdle at Leicester (20.5f, heavy) 27 days ago. Much respected on his handicap hurdle debut. Scopey; improving with experience and good 3rd over 2m4f latest; handicap debut. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
4th (2) (80/1 -220%) Toronet |
80/1(-220%) | (2) Toronet 80/1, Winner of a claiming hurdle at Fontainebleau (17.6f) in February (subsequently claimed from Julien Phelippon for €19,999). Much too free on yard debut when last of 7 over 2m here in May. Lots more is needed after a break. Won 2m2f claiming hurdle on final French start; tailed off on British debut in May. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
5th (6) (16/1 -60%) Grasshopper Time |
16/1(-60%) | (6) Grasshopper Time 16/1, Lightly-raced maiden hurdler. 22/1, first run since leaving Roger McGrath when well-held sixth of 8 in novice hurdle at Newbury (16.3f, good to soft) 16 days ago. Much more is required on his handicap hurdle debut. Minor hurdle promise in Ireland; highly tried on British debut; much more realistic here. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|F| (1) (9/2 +18%) Swinging London |
9/2(+18%) | (1) Swinging London 9/2, A fair winning hurdler who got back on track when fourth of 6 in handicap hurdle at Lingfield (16f, good to soft) 33 days ago. Enters calculations now stepping up in trip. Favourably treated on form in early 2023 but below best on last 3 starts; new trip. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|PU| (4) (5/1 -25%) Heross Du Seuil |
5/1(-25%) | (4) Heross Du Seuil 5/1, Successful at Uttoxeter (2½m) in September and has continued in good nick, fourth at Market Rasen (2m) last time. Shortlisted back up in trip. Ended losing run in September (2m4f, soft); lesser efforts of late; tongue-tie added. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|PU| (8) (33/1 -136%) Mistertommyshelby |
33/1(-136%) | (8) Mistertommyshelby 33/1, Overall record an uninspiring one and was tailed off in a handicap at Uttoxeter 70 days ago. 14 lb out of the handicap too. Not within striking distance of the winner in 3 runs this year; long way out of weights. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 4 race.
A respectable third on each of his two starts in maiden hurdles, GLOBE PLAYER looks to have a been given a workable mark on his handicap debut as he looks to get off the mark. The four-year-old seems to have conditions in his favour and may have too much for Swinging London and Realisation, who hasn't been able to replicate the form of her bumper success at Bangor last October in two starts over timber this season.
REALISATION showed the benefit of a tongue tie when a very good Hereford third last time and she can add to her bumper success now stepping into handicap company for the first time. Swinging London comes here in good nick and can go well with the return to further a likely plus, while Sister Michael could emerge as a big threat too if the market vibes prove positive on his comeback run.
Useful bumper winner REALISATION (nap) has her best chance yet since switched to hurdles and this handicap debut doesn't look demanding.
Ths is the racecard key.

Horse racing is a popular and historic sport in the UK, with a tradition dating back centuries. It is a multi-billion pound industry that attracts millions of spectators each year and generates significant economic activity.
There are two main types of horse racing in the UK: flat racing and jump racing. Flat racing is run on a level course and is typically shorter in distance, while jump racing involves horses jumping over obstacles and is generally longer in distance. Both types of racing are popular with spectators and bettors, and they take place at various racetracks throughout the country.
The most famous horse racing event in the UK is the Grand National, which is held annually at Aintree Racecourse in Liverpool. It is a jump racing event that is known for its challenging course and has become a national institution in the UK. Other notable horse racing events in the UK include the Derby, held at Epsom Downs Racecourse in Surrey, and the Royal Ascot, held at Ascot Racecourse in Berkshire.
Horse racing in the UK is regulated by the British Horseracing Authority (BHA), which sets rules and standards for the industry. It is responsible for the welfare of racehorses and the safety of jockeys and trainers, as well as ensuring fair and transparent racing practices.
In addition to its economic and cultural importance, horse racing in the UK also plays a significant role in the breeding and training of thoroughbred horses. Many of the world's top thoroughbreds are bred and trained in the UK, and the industry plays a vital role in the preservation and promotion of the breed.
Overall, horse racing is an integral part of British culture and a major contributor to the country's economy. It is a thrilling and exciting sport that continues to attract a loyal following and generate significant interest from spectators and bettors around the world.
