1st (5) (11/2 +0%) Happy Du Mesnil |
11/2(+0%) | (5) Happy Du Mesnil 11/2, Maiden hurdler who has yet to convince over fences for current yard, never looking like winning after another sloppy round of jumping when fourth of 7 in handicap chase at Market Rasen (17.2f, soft) 48 days ago. Lightly raced chaser who has perked up for headgear the last twice; thereabouts. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
3rd (2) (8/1 -60%) Cokytho |
8/1(-60%) | (2) Cokytho 8/1, Remains a maiden but was a fair performer in France and hasn't been disgraced in a handful of outings for current yard, latest when second of 8 in handicap chase at Hereford (20.9f, soft) 41 days ago. Player. Now 0-16 over fences but he found just a stronger finisher too good at Hereford (2m5f). |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
4th (1) (9/1 -200%) Havock |
9/1(-200%) | (1) Havock 9/1, Verging on fair in bumpers and ran to a similar level when second on Stratford hurdle debut in November. No show next 3 starts but step back in right direction switched to fences when fifth at Ffos Las. Respected down in class. Went close in a novice hurdle and ran fairly well to be beaten 10l on his switch to fences. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
5th (9) (6/1 +63%) Over Milk Wood |
6/1(+63%) | (9) Over Milk Wood 6/1, Modest form over hurdles in Ireland for Olivia Hegarty in 2021. Missed all of 2022 and 2023 and low-key efforts upon returning to action in recent months. Chase debut. Ran a little better on his third run back from a mammoth absence; chase debut. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
6th (12) (15/2 +6%) Robins Field |
15/2(+6%) | (12) Robins Field 15/2, Filled runner-up spot 5 times over fences but still seeking first success and well held back over hurdles latest. 2 lb out of handicap. Sixth last time over hurdles but had finished runner-up in three chases before then. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
7th (7) (14/1 +13%) Highway One O Four |
14/1(+13%) | (7) Highway One O Four 14/1, Little impact in 3 novice hurdles and on handicap bow. Has plenty of size for chasing at least. An ordinary hurdler but lightly raced and he's bred to make a chaser. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
8th (4) (11/2 +21%) Larkfield Lusive |
11/2(+21%) | (4) Larkfield Lusive 11/2, Modest maiden hurdler in Ireland who ran creditably both starts for this yard. Not taken lightly sent chasing. Much depends on whether he can raise his game over fences as needs to. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
9th (3) (11/1 +31%) Lord Denning |
11/1(+31%) | (3) Lord Denning 11/1, Boasts a decent jumps pedigree and showed a bit more at the third attempt over hurdles when fifth in a 14-runner novice at Newcastle. Failed to meet expectations sent chasing there 3 months ago but still early days. Up in trip. One promising hurdle run; ground was heavy when well held on chase/h'cap debut. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
10th (6) (15/2 +25%) Another Mystery |
15/2(+25%) | (6) Another Mystery 15/2, Back to form when winning last 2 starts over hurdles (subsequently sold from Lucy Wadham 15,000 gns). Not disgraced back over fences at Market Rasen on yard debut after a break but well held at Huntingdon since. Off 6 months. Hood on 1st time. Dual hurdle winner for Lucy Wadham; quiet start for this yard and 0-6 as a chaser. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
11th (13) (200/1 -100%) Mawlood |
200/1(-100%) | (13) Mawlood 200/1, Little form last season and plenty to prove from out of the handicap after 7 months off. 0-10 over fences and a good while since he ran a race of any distinction. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|PU| (10) (12/1 -33%) Poetria |
12/1(-33%) | (10) Poetria 12/1, Modest form at best over hurdles (0-11 in that sphere) and looked none too keen switched to fences at Newcastle. Cheekpieces on for 1st time. Placed over hurdles; made a mistake when below expectations on chase debut. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|PU| (8) (50/1 +0%) Wotastunner |
50/1(+0%) | (8) Wotastunner 50/1, Has completed just once over hurdles and went with no encouragement on chase bow. Poor so far (inc chase debut) but unraced on good ground so that offers some hope. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 5 race.
HAVOCK has to shoulder top-weight for the Skelton team, but caught the eye on his chasing debut at Ffos Las when running well for a long way to finish fifth. Dropped 3lb by the handicapper and upped a furlong, he is entitled to find this company more to his liking. Cokytho has some solid placed form to his name and could be interesting if recent wind surgery brings improvement, while Fast Deal won over further last month and won't be stopping late on.
HAVOCK took a step back in the right direction sent chasing at Ffos Las 2 weeks ago so makes the most appeal down in class in a weak event. Cokytho should be in the mix again, while it's still early days for the unexposed Lord Denning.
It's hard to trust any of these. A chance is taken on HIGHWAY ONE O FOUR who is bred for this new discipline.

1st (4) (3/1 -20%) Taste The Fear |
3/1(-20%) | (4) Taste The Fear 3/1, Well-served by fitting of first-time blinkers when cashing in off much-reduced mark over C&D 2 weeks ago, asserting from 3 out. Rider's claim off sets his weight rise and big shout provided headgear has desired effect once more. The blinkers worked over C&D 14 days ago but this may take more winning. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
2nd (1) (11/2 +15%) Morning Spirit |
11/2(+15%) | (1) Morning Spirit 11/2, Has dipped to an attractive mark, now 9 lb below that off which he opened his chase account at Carlisle in November 2022. However, he hasn't really threatened since and he finished well held after 4 months off at Stratford in March. On a very good mark if getting back on track but again he disappointed last time. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
3rd (5) (4/1 +20%) Minella Double |
4/1(+20%) | (5) Minella Double 4/1, Irish point winner who made a winning debut over hurdles at Hexham (20f) back in the autumn. Hasn't kicked on from that subsequently, including when fourth of 5 on chase debut at Huntingdon (23.6f) in March. Hasn't gone on from winning a Hexham maiden (2m4f, soft) on hurdling debut in October. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
4th (6) (100/1 -100%) Lough Salt |
100/1(-100%) | (6) Lough Salt 100/1, Successful twice in 3m handicap chases here in early-2022. Form patchy since and has temperament issues these days, so hard to fancy returning to the larger obstacles from miles out of the weights after a 4-month break. Veteran who will do well to get competitive here from well out of the weights. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
5th (3) (4/1 -45%) Son Of The Somme |
4/1(-45%) | (3) Son Of The Somme 4/1, Hurdles/chase winner who ran again ran well on stable debut when second of 8 in handicap chase at Newbury (22.4f) in March. The way he kept on then suggests this return to 3m will suit and he's worth considering. Positive start for this yard when second to a progressive rival at Newbury. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
6th (2) (5/2 +0%) Ernest Gray |
5/2(+0%) | (2) Ernest Gray 5/2, Hurdle winner who stepped up on chase debut when scoring over C&D in January and quickly dispelled a lesser effort when runner-up in a first-time visor at Doncaster (3m) in March. Possibilities if headgear has desired effect once more. C&D winner and probably better again in defeat last time; bang there. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 4 race.
Taste The Fear could prove popular here after his C&D success last month, but he won by less than a length that day and an added 4lb from the handicapper looks prohibitive. ERNEST GRAY has also been successful over this C&D and was a length second at Doncaster in March. With the going ideal, he can go well for the in-form Alan King yard, while Minella Double is only six and may have more to offer.
TASTE THE FEAR was perked up no end by the fitting of blinkers when cashing in off his much-reduced mark over C&D 2 weeks ago. With his rider's claim off setting his rise in weights, he looks a live player again provided the headgear has the desired effect once more. Son of The Somme, back up in trip, and Ernest Gray are others to consider.
Ernest Gray is perhaps the most solid of these but SON OF THE SOMME made a good start for Toby Lawes at Newbury.

1st (6) (10/1 -67%) Gale Mahler |
10/1(-67%) | (6) Gale Mahler 10/1, Well backed and made a promising start when fourth of 7 in bumper (6/5) at Sedgefield (16.8f, heavy) 8 weeks ago, shaping as in need of a stiffer test. Cheekpieces on and interesting to see if her supporters return. Favourite at Sedgefield and found all trouble going; was beaten under 3l. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
2nd (9) (7/2 +42%) Roaring Home |
7/2(+42%) | (9) Roaring Home 7/2, Out of a bumper winner and positive start in mares' events at Ludlow and Ascot (perhaps not ridden to best advantage in a slowly-run contest). Could be capable of better returning from a break. Placed in both her bumpers and there's substance to the latest form at Ascot. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
3rd (1) (4/5 +20%) Asian Star |
4/5(+20%) | (1) Asian Star 4/5, Malinas mare who shaped very well when fifth of 18 in bumper at Cheltenham (16.8f, good, 5/2) 19 days ago, likely to have gone close had things broken better for her (finished with running left after badly hampered over 1f out). Open to improvement, she looks sure to go well. Beaten 6.5l at Cheltenham and would have been closer but for interference. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
4th (11) (6/1 +33%) Briery Bee |
6/1(+33%) | (11) Briery Bee 6/1, Dartmouth filly who showed plenty of ability when second of 7 in bumper at Fakenham (16f, good to soft) on debut just over 5 weeks ago, headed well inside final 1f. Could well have a say in this with that under her belt. Stoutly bred so encouraging that she ran so well at Fakenham. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
5th (10) (16/1 -191%) Wilmcote |
16/1(-191%) | (10) Wilmcote 16/1, Jack Hobbs mare. Half-sister to 5 winners, including bumper winner/fairly useful hurdler Space Voyage and fairly useful hurdler Crest. Dam (c88/h105), 2m-2½m hurdle winner, half-sister to Grand National winner Rule The World. Highly respected on debut for her in-form yard. Bred to win races over jumps and stable wins plenty of these races. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
6th (7) (33/1 -83%) Genies Girl |
33/1(-83%) | (7) Genies Girl 33/1, €1,800 3-y-o, Sageburg mare. Half-sister to bumper winner/fair 23f hurdle winner Olivers Travels. Dam (b80), placed once in bumpers, half-sister to bumper winner/fairly useful hurdler (stays 3¼m) Sporting Ace. 1,800euros 3yo; second foal; half-sister to bumper/2m7f hurdle winner Olivers Travels. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
7th (2) (33/1 +34%) Cocco Madonna |
33/1(+34%) | (2) Cocco Madonna 33/1, Had breathing operation prior to debut and went with little immediate promise in bumper at Huntingdon (15.8f, soft) in January. Looks one for later on. Prominent to a point but weakened out of it on good to soft at Huntingdon in January. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
8th (8) (25/1 -178%) Marco's Light |
25/1(-178%) | (8) Marco's Light 25/1, Champs Elysees mare. Closely related to 7f-1¼m winner Maude Adams and half-sister to a winner. Dam, 9.5f winner who stayed 12.5f, half-sister to useful hurdler/chaser (stayed 2¾m) Kasthari. Makes plenty of appeal on paper for a top yard. Eighth foal; closely related to 7f-1m2f winner Maude Adams (RPR 85). |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
9th (5) (28/1 +30%) Dunstall Angel |
28/1(+30%) | (5) Dunstall Angel 28/1, Walk In The Park mare who was fifth of 10 in bumper at this C&D (heavy) on debut in February. Looks one for the longer term. Beaten 21l into mid-division on heavy-ground debut here in February. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
10th (3) (125/1 -279%) Devon Skies |
125/1(-279%) | (3) Devon Skies 125/1, Shaped as if in need of the experience when well held in bumper at Cheltenham (16.8f, good) on debut 19 days ago, running green. 125-1 for a Class 2 bumper at Cheltenham 19 days ago and was always out the back. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
11th (14) (100/1 -52%) Spinnova |
100/1(-52%) | (14) Spinnova 100/1, Offered little when eighth of 10 in bumper at Uttoxeter (15.8f, heavy) on debut 13 days ago. Easy to look elsewhere. Weakened when it mattered at Uttoxeter and was beaten 20l into eighth (on soft; 40-1). |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
12th (13) (250/1 -25%) Miss Motivator |
250/1(-25%) | (13) Miss Motivator 250/1, Tailed-off last in bumper at Wetherby (16f, heavy) 7 weeks ago. Can only be watched. Finished tailed off at Wetherby (soft) when allowed to go off at 125-1. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
13th (4) (200/1 -100%) Dontworrywegotthis |
200/1(-100%) | (4) Dontworrywegotthis 200/1, Schiaparelli mare. Dam (c82/h94) 2m-21f hurdle winner. Big outsider on debut. Fourth foal; dam point/2m-2m4f hurdle winner; stable doesn't have many bumper runners. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 5 race.
Briery Bee might be the obvious pick after her second at Fakenham last month when beaten less than a length at the line. Roaring Home is another to consider seriously, but a chance is taken on GALE MAHLER. Sent off favourite on her Sedgefield debut, she had to be switched for a run a furlong out, and again close home, so was possibly an unlucky loser.
A few in with a squeak but the vote goes to ASIAN STAR, who would have likely gone close had things broken better for her at Cheltenham last month. With improvement on the cards, she can get the better of Gale Mahler, who was well backed and made a promising start when finishing a close fourth at Sedgefield 8 weeks ago. Debutantes Marco's Light and Wilmcote are worth keeping a close eye on, too.
Dan Skelton's ASIAN STAR was just getting up a head of steam when stopped in her tracks on the run-in at Cheltenham.

100/1(-150%) | (12) Moonscape Girl 100/1, Related to a bumper winner but hasn't shown enough as yet to make her of serious interest. Two runs at Huntingdon, finishing a 12l fifth and an 18l seventh. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
2nd (2) (66/1 -164%) Damzon |
66/1(-164%) | (2) Damzon 66/1, Limited encouragement at Hereford on debut and will need a lot more if she's to get competitive in this. 40-1 when sixth at Hereford and made up some late ground to be 26l off the winner. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
3rd (7) (9/1 +44%) Rockola Vogue |
9/1(+44%) | (7) Rockola Vogue 9/1, Jukebox Jury mare. Half-sister to bumper winner Imonlysaying. Dam, little show in bumpers/over hurdles, sister to useful hurdler/chaser (stayed 3¼m) Doctor Harper. Not ruled out. Third foal; half-sister to bumper winner Imonlysaying; dam maiden bumpers/hurdles. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
4th (4) (33/1 +0%) Eliza Storm |
33/1(+0%) | (4) Eliza Storm 33/1, Related to three winners but didn't show enough at Hereford on debut to make her of serious interest. Never threatened to take a hand when a distance behind at Hereford (good to soft; 11-1). |

5th (13) (15/2 -36%) Porridge |
15/2(-36%) | (13) Porridge 15/2, Casamento filly. Dam unraced, out of useful hurdler/fair chase winner (stayed 2¾m) Bold Fire. Fourth on sole outing in point bumpers (Feb 25). Yard does well in this sphere and she's not without hope. Beaten 13l into fourth in a 2m point bumper at Larkhill in February. |

40/1(-21%) | (10) Eileen's Orders 40/1, Order of St George filly. First foal; dam runner-up in 2m4f bumper and half-sister to smart jumper Puffin Billy. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
7th (8) (11/4 +8%) Yesanna |
11/4(+8%) | (8) Yesanna 11/4, £88,000 3-y-o, Blue Bresil mare. Half-sister to 3 winners, including useful hurdler/fairly useful chaser Tedham, stayed 3¼m, and fair hurdler Lily of Leysbourne. One to take seriously on debut. £88,000 3yo; nice pedigree and in top hands, so of obvious interest. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||

22/1(+33%) | (11) Lady Henrietta 22/1, Blue Bresil filly. Dam (c95/h114), 19f-23f hurdle/chase winner, half-sister to fairly useful hurdler/useful chaser (stayed 21f) Benefit Cut. Likely to need time. Dam 2m3f-2m7f winner; bred to do better further down the line when sent further. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
9th (3) (9/4 -38%) Either Way |
9/4(-38%) | (3) Either Way 9/4, Diamond Boy mare. Half-sister to fair 19f hurdle winner Either Or. Dam unraced. Runner-up sole start in Irish points (Jan 21) and looks the one to beat starting out under Rules for a top yard. Second in her point behind a recent Plumpton bumper winner. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
10th (14) (28/1 -75%) Precious Jean |
28/1(-75%) | (14) Precious Jean 28/1, Out of a modest hurdler and down the field at Cheltenham on debut. This is a lesser race but she'll still need to step forward. Trailed the winner by 20l at Cheltenham 19 days ago when a 33-1 chance. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
11th (5) (16/1 -14%) Hot Chique |
16/1(-14%) | (5) Hot Chique 16/1, £8,000 4-y-o, Black Sam Bellamy mare. Closely related to fairly useful hurdler/useful chaser Hill Sixteen. Trainer’s newcomers are worthy of respect. £8,000 4yo; fifth foal; closely related to smart 2m3f-3m hurdle/chase winner Hill Sixteen. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
12th (1) (12/1 +25%) Annie Don |
12/1(+25%) | (1) Annie Don 12/1, Yeats mare. Closely related to bumper winner/fairly useful chaser Middlebrow. Dam lightly raced over hurdles. Runner-up on third of 3 starts in Irish points (Mar 2). Second in an Irish point and the winner has since finished runner-up in a bumper. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
13th (6) (17/2 -21%) Made For Me |
17/2(-21%) | (6) Made For Me 17/2, Runner-up completed start in Irish points (Mar 2023). Only fourth in C&D bumper last month but should build on that and makes most appeal of those with bumper form. 100-30 when a front-running fifth here a month ago having got tired on heavy ground. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 5 race.
EITHER WAY was second on her only start between the flags in Ireland and it would be no surprise to see the five-year-old make a winning Rules debut here. Yesanna cost 88,000 pounds as a store and she is closely related to plenty of winners, including the Grade 3-placed hurdler Tedham. Barrabool and Made For Me are the pick of those with racecourse experience but could be vulnerable.
EITHER WAY finished second in a point and has been picked up by Nicky Henderson since, so she looks the obvious way to go in a race where the bar isn't set very high. Yesanna is a notable newcomer on paper and Made For Me should step up on her Rules debut.
Either Way is an obvious one but YESANNA didn't come cheap at the sales and her dam was a dual bumper winner.

2nd (1) (15/2 -50%) Ascension Day |
15/2(-50%) | (1) Ascension Day 15/2, Looked all set to record a big-priced debut win under Rules only to run out late on at Worcester last summer. Placed in maiden hurdles here this spring and should be up to making an impact from this opening mark. Should have won by now but doesn't look progressive; handicap debut. |

3rd (7) (33/1 +0%) Royal Max |
33/1(+0%) | (7) Royal Max 33/1, Modest form at best for Nicky Henderson and has shown little for current yard. Pulled up in handicaps over hurdles and fences the last twice when big odds. |

4th (8) (5/1 -43%) Chemical Warfare |
5/1(-43%) | (8) Chemical Warfare 5/1, Won over fences at Newcastle for Tjade Collier last May and placed over hurdles later that month. Chase winner for previous yard; had wind surgery ahead of this stable debut. |

5th (9) (22/1 -38%) Eric Carmen |
22/1(-38%) | (9) Eric Carmen 22/1, A fair maiden in Ireland but no show in 4 outings for this yard since returning from a long absence. Placed over hurdles in Ireland in summer 2022 but has lost his way badly; opposable. |

6th (3) (11/8 +93%) Tessy Lad |
11/8(+93%) | (3) Tessy Lad 11/8, Fairly useful handicapper on Flat (stays 1½m) who was placed in a pair of juvenile hurdles for Richard Hughes in 2022/23 but struggled in 3 handicap hurdles for this yard over the winter. Also last of 6 back on the Flat here 6 weeks ago. Tongue strap reached for now. Could only consider if backed. Yet to find his form under either code since changing bases and now tongue-tied. |

7th (6) (28/1 -75%) Dazzling Dove |
28/1(-75%) | (6) Dazzling Dove 28/1, Good second over 20.5f here in March 2023 but it's been downhill since. Remains to be seen whether a drop back in trip helps to spark a revival. 16-race maiden but her second here in March of last year on good to soft isn't forgotten. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
8th (2) (7/1 -155%) Mersey Street |
7/1(-155%) | (2) Mersey Street 7/1, Second in an Irish point and has shown promise in bumpers/over hurdles. Appeals as a likely improver in handicaps. Market confidence could prove significant. Pleasing run at Taunton latest and he's one to be interested in on handicap debut. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|PU| (5) (17/2 -143%) Marrakushi |
17/2(-143%) | (5) Marrakushi 17/2, Well held in bumper/maiden hurdle for David Pipe but more encouraging signs for this yard in 2 juveniles around the turn of the year. Makes handicap debut back from 105 days off. Has shown more in his runs for this yard in races won by useful novices; h'cap debut. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|PU| (4) (28/1 -12%) No Mean Feat |
28/1(-12%) | (4) No Mean Feat 28/1, Pulled up sole start in points and just poor form to over hurdles. Pulled up on chase debut latest (final start for Alexandra Dunn. Does have experience in handicaps but they're nothing to shout about. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 5 race.
In a moderate event it is hard to oppose ASCENSION DAY, who was second in maiden hurdle over C&D a month ago, albeit well held. A reproduction of that form would give him a big chance on his handicap debut here. Mersey Street was not disgraced at Taunton last time and may have more to offer, while similar comments apply to Marrakushi.
The suggestion is the O'Neill stable handicap newcomer MERSEY STREET, with confidence in his chance increased should the betting vibes be strong. Chemical Welfare is a potentially dangerous opponent on his first outing for David Pipe and is another for whom market strength could prove significant. Handicap newcomers Marrakushi and Ascension Day are others who could have a say.
He's been off for 105 days but MARRAKUSHI has shown enough in two non-handicaps for this yard to believe he might not be on a bad mark.

1st (5) (16/5 -167%) Therapist |
16/5(-167%) | (5) Therapist 16/5, Fairly useful Flat winner for Andrew Balding. Has shown a bit over hurdles and these less testing conditions sure to suit now handicapping after 3 months off. Hereford form has worked out well; that was on soft and yet best Flat form was on good. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
2nd (1) (10/3 +26%) Jumping Jupiter |
10/3(+26%) | (1) Jumping Jupiter 10/3, Placed twice over these brush hurdles and one to note on debut for Mark Walford down in the weights back from 4 months off. Poor last time but possibilities on peak efforts and has changed yards. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
3rd (10) (6/1 +57%) Northern Rose |
6/1(+57%) | (10) Northern Rose 6/1, Poor maiden who made more impact than previously at Uttoxeter a fortnight ago despite again being out of the handicap and failing to impress with her technique over the hurdles. Can't be supported for the win. Placed last time but was beaten 8l and she's still a maiden; opposable. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
4th (3) (18/1 -80%) Illucidate |
18/1(-80%) | (3) Illucidate 18/1, Fair ex-French Flat winner who shaped better than the distance beaten suggests in 2m Fakenham juvenile hurdle 5 weeks ago, though she didn't finish with much gusto considering she was arriving following a breathing operation. Handicap debut. Looks held by Therapist but did raise her game in defeat last time at Fakenham. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
5th (4) (33/1 -230%) Common Acclaim |
33/1(-230%) | (4) Common Acclaim 33/1, Fair maiden handicapper on Flat. Similar form when reaching the frame in juvenile hurdles before Christmas and looks on a feasible mark for this first handicap over hurdles. Beaten a long way on all four starts over hurdles but this is his handicap debut. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
6th (9) (15/2 +6%) Orbys River |
15/2(+6%) | (9) Orbys River 15/2, Poor maiden hurdler although ran well again when second at Uttoxeter (2m, heavy) last month. Should win one of these before long. Things have started to look up of late and she chased home a likeable type at Uttoxeter. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
7th (8) (15/2 +25%) Duneomeno |
15/2(+25%) | (8) Duneomeno 15/2, Maiden hurdler who offered some promise back from 18 months off at Ludlow in February, but well supported back over fences (winning chaser) at Huntingdon 7 weeks ago and well beaten. Cheekpieces go on. Chasing doesn't appear to float his boat and the last run over hurdles was encouraging. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|B| (2) (13/2 +7%) Platenium |
13/2(+7%) | (2) Platenium 13/2, Has shown a bit in bumpers/2m novice hurdles and could do better now handicapping, although opening mark probably not generous. Tongue tie goes on. Disappointing should he fail to raise his game at this level on handicap debut. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|F| (7) (12/1 +40%) Harry Gulliver |
12/1(+40%) | (7) Harry Gulliver 12/1, Well held in bumper (hooded) and little show in maiden hurdles. Makes handicap debut after 139 days off. Just one half-respectable effort; handicapped accordingly but has much to prove. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|F| (6) (125/1 -279%) Gladys Eva Jane |
125/1(-279%) | (6) Gladys Eva Jane 125/1, Fair form in bumpers for Peter Bowen (sold £5,000) but little promise over hurdles, looking ungenuine. Handicap debut. Placed in bumpers but huge odds over hurdles and has achieved little; h'cap debut. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 5 race.
Therapist has yet to show her Flat form over hurdles but cannot be discounted on her first start in a handicap. That said, preference is for ORBYS RIVER, who has filled second place off this mark on two of her last three starts and this appears to be an ideal opportunity to go one better. Others to note are Common Acclaim, Illucidate and Duneomeno.
Tricky stuff with JUMPING JUPITER chanced on his first start for Mark Walford having been placed twice here for his previous trainer. Therapist could be well ahead of her mark now handicapping in this sphere for Nicky Henderson, while Orbys River can win a race like this.
The outstanding candidate is THERAPIST (nap) who, considering her Flat ability, is potentially thrown in for her handicap debut.

1st (7) (13/2 -18%) Pozo Emery |
13/2(-18%) | (7) Pozo Emery 13/2, Promising novice hurdler for Paul Nicholls in 2021. Pulled up in 2 chase starts for new yard since returning from a long absence but back on track (to an extent) since returned to this sphere and recent C&D third off this mark was his best effort for so far for present connections. Made the frame over C&D two weeks ago with the visor back on. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
2nd (5) (15/2 +38%) The Big Lense |
15/2(+38%) | (5) The Big Lense 15/2, Clearly more effective over the larger obstacles, as he demonstrated when landing a handicap chase at Aintree off a 14 lb higher mark last summer. Largely below par in hunters since, though, and his record in this sphere does not augur well, for all that he's potentially well treated. Has his ground again but a better chaser who has never been as good over hurdles. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
3rd (9) (20/1 -67%) Mcgowan's Pass |
20/1(-67%) | (9) Mcgowan's Pass 20/1, It's now 18 runs since last win in 2020 but this veteran was placed on several occasions last year prior to misfiring at Bangor when last seen 8 months ago. Resumes on a 4 lb lower mark and certainly wouldn't be without each-way hope if fully wound-up for this assignment. Consistent enough but this veteran is on a losing run and hasn't been seen since August. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
4th (11) (14/1 +30%) Malina Ocarina |
14/1(+30%) | (11) Malina Ocarina 14/1, Landed a gamble over this C&D last May but mixed bag since and she turned in a poor effort at Hereford when last seen in January. C&D winner a year ago but nothing positive to take from her last three appearances. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
5th (8) (11/4 -22%) Solar System |
11/4(-22%) | (8) Solar System 11/4, Clear signs of ability in a couple of maiden hurdles and has predictably improved since switched to handicaps, third at Taunton in March prior to opening his account in good style with a hood enlisted (retained here) at Fontwell (17.7f, good to firm). This 6 lb higher mark should be within reach. Lightly raced and won his second handicap comfortably at Fontwell (good). |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
6th (10) (11/1 +45%) Gieves |
11/1(+45%) | (10) Gieves 11/1, Hooded for first time when winning a 2m novice hurdle by 19 lengths at Worcester in September. However, his mark inevitably suffered as a result of that wide-margin success and he was beaten a fair way in the Fontwell handicap won by Solar System last month. Only win was in a maiden when hooded; plenty to find with Solar System on latest run. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
7th (4) (5/1 -67%) Fierce Warrior |
5/1(-67%) | (4) Fierce Warrior 5/1, Bumper winner who left hurdles debut effort behind (looked wayward going right-handed that day) back on a left-handed course at Plumpton where he won a 20.5f maiden in pretty decisive fashion. No show over same C&D since but yard was under a cloud at that point and merits respect now handicapping. Record of 2-5; will like the ground and should be competitive off this sort of mark. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
8th (6) (6/1 -9%) Allbetsoff |
6/1(-9%) | (6) Allbetsoff 6/1, Bagged his third win of 2023 in 6-runner Huntingdon claimer (15.8f, good to soft) in November. Well held back in handicap company over the same C&D next time but resumed from a break with a much better effort over this C&D a fortnight ago and he's a live each-way candidate. Pleasing fourth after an absence here two weeks ago; could be sharper and knows how to win. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
9th (3) (22/1 -57%) On Springs |
22/1(-57%) | (3) On Springs 22/1, Not entirely straightforward but thrived during summer of 2022, winning 4 times over fences, and added to his tally when landing a small-field handicap chase at Doncaster last February. However, well held when last seen just over 12 months ago and record stands at 0-7 in this sphere. 0-7 over hurdles and yet he's a five-time chaser winner; off for 13 months. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|F| (1) (11/1 +21%) No Thanks |
11/1(+21%) | (1) No Thanks 11/1, Regained the winning thread in a handicap hurdle Ballinrobe for Matthew J. Smith last summer but unseated sole subsequent start in this sphere and below par on the Flat the last twice. On a stiff-looking mark for this yard debut following a break and others preferred. Proven winner and Fergal O'Brien might get his competitive juices flowing again. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
10th (2) (33/1 +0%) Witness Protection |
33/1(+0%) | (2) Witness Protection 33/1, Dual hurdles winner who made it third time lucky over fences at Chepstow in November 2021. Lightly raced and well below par since, though, and the return to this sphere failed to spark a return to form at Cheltenham last month. Never counted on his belated return to hurdling at Cheltenham last month when 125-1. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 4 race.
SOLAR SYSTEM scored by just over two lengths in a class 5 event at Fontwell last month and he only has a 6lb higher mark to contend with. The son of Pastorius makes only his third handicap start and he could have plenty more to offer. The main danger is Fierce Warrior, who is a bumper/maiden hurdle winner making his handicap debut off a workable mark of 110, while Allbetsoff is another to note.
Low-mileage 5-y-os SOLAR SYSTEM and Fierce Warrior could be the pair to concentrate on and preference is for the former, who settled much better in a first-time hood when scoring in good style at Fontwell and neither this 6 lb higher mark nor the step back up in trip are likely to be an issue. It's best to draw a line through Fierce Warrior's latest effort given that his yard was enduring a torrid time of things at that point and he is clear second choice ahead of Pozo Emery and Allbetsoff.
The 5yo SOLAR SYSTEM settled better in the hood at Fontwell and he duly produced a much-improved performance. He can go in again.

1st (1) (40/1 -21%) Aquitaine Boy |
40/1(-21%) | (1) Aquitaine Boy 40/1, Little impact in various race-types for James Ewart and can only be watched on the back of a monster absence. No wins in nine and tried chasing the once; lowly rated and returns from a mammoth absence. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
2nd (5) (8/11 +51%) Mostly Sunny |
8/11(+51%) | (5) Mostly Sunny 8/11, Fairly useful handicapper on the Flat for Heather Main, successful at Kempton (1½m) when last seen in January (sold for 32,000 gns the following month). Stamina won't be a problem now switched to hurdles (effective at up to 2m on the level) and he has to be of interest on debut for the Skelton team. Three Flat wins from 1m4f to 2m and of useful ability; joined top yard for hurdling. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
3rd (2) (13/2 -160%) Eaton Anne |
13/2(-160%) | (2) Eaton Anne 13/2, Half-brother to useful hurdler/fairly useful chaser Gates of Rome and fairly useful hurdler/chaser Cooldine Bog. Successful sole start between the flags in November and very much one to note on Rules debut. Bought for £25,000 after winning an Irish point in November and the second has won since. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
4th (3) (28/1 -133%) Hiero Sport |
28/1(-133%) | (3) Hiero Sport 28/1, Out of a fairly useful jumper and shaped with plenty of promise when second in Market Rasen bumper on debut last spring. However, he hasn't shown much in a couple of runs over hurdles. Has finished tailed off and pulled up in his two hurdles, stopping quickly. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
5th (6) (7/4 -7%) New Order |
7/4(-7%) | (6) New Order 7/4, Got off the mark in Irish points at second attempt and runner-up on 2 of his 4 subsequent starts in this sphere, including when returning from a break in a big-field Market Rasen maiden (20.6f, good to soft) last month. Should make a bold bid, provided this drop in trip doesn't count against him. Beaten 2l by the right horse at Market Rasen and looks sure to have a big say in this. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
6th (9) (40/1 +20%) Darting Rose |
40/1(+20%) | (9) Darting Rose 40/1, From a family connections know well and she showed plenty on debut in a bumper here last spring. However, she hasn't gone on from that since and was well beaten on hurdles debut in November. Understandably showed little behind class act Dysart Enos on hurdling debut at Doncaster. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
7th (11) (80/1 -60%) Lake's Aventurine |
80/1(-60%) | (11) Lake's Aventurine 80/1, Half-sister to 3 winners, including fairly useful French 2m/2¼m hurdle winner Lake's Maker. Showed some ability when fourth of 13 on debut in a Hereford bumper (16.2f, soft) in March but failed to build on that next time and sizeable step forward needed now switched to hurdles. First bumper run was better than the second and even then she was beaten 17l. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
8th (10) (80/1 -60%) Lady Harriett |
80/1(-60%) | (10) Lady Harriett 80/1, Showed some ability when fourth in Chepstow bumper last March but ran poorly on return at the same course in January. Subsequently pulled up on hurdles bow at Huntingdon and she's readily passed over. She's another who ran okay on her bumper debut but has offered nothing since. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
9th (8) (150/1 -50%) Conniegetaway |
150/1(-50%) | (8) Conniegetaway 150/1, Modest form shown in 3 bumpers and failed to complete over hurdles so far. She's kicked off over hurdles with two non-completions at huge odds. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
10th (4) (66/1 -100%) Jean Danjou |
66/1(-100%) | (4) Jean Danjou 66/1, Fair maiden on the Flat and, having changed hands for 9,500 gns in September, he was a well-held second in a 5-runner affair (only 3 completed) on hurdles debut at Huntingdon (15.8f, good). Undergone a wind op since and now tried in a tongue strap. Questionable what he achieved in a Huntingdon novice as that race completely fell apart. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
11th (7) (66/1 +34%) Real Rewards |
66/1(+34%) | (7) Real Rewards 66/1, Half-brother to 3 winners, including fair hurdler/fairly useful chaser East Street and fair chaser Armattiekan. Runner-up on the latest of his 4 starts between the flags back in May 2022 but sent off at 200/1 and suffered a heavy defeat on Rules debut in December. Went close in one of his four points but was 200-1 when pulled up in a Doncaster novice. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 4 race.
Point-to-point winner Eaton Anne changed hands for 25,000 pounds in December and it would be no surprise to see him get involved on his debut for the in-form Olly Murphy team. However, the vote goes to NEW ORDER, who was a long way clear of the third when second at Market Rasen last month, despite jumping left throughout. Charlie Longsdon's six-year-old may benefit from this left-handed track and he should have no issues with this drop in distance, while any market confidence behind Mostly Sunny would also be interesting.
Olly Murphy has his string in good order and saddles an appealing type here in EATON ANNE, who landed a maiden point towards the end of last year and it will look significant if the market speaks in his favour ahead of this Rules debut. New Order is much the best of those with experience over hurdles and will be a big threat if coping with this drop in trip, while Mostly Sunny, a three-time winner on the Flat, has to enter calculations on debut in this sphere for the Dan Skelton yard.
Dan Skelton's MOSTLY SUNNY was pretty decent on his day on the Flat and could easily be the answer to this modest contest.
Ths is the racecard key.

Horse racing is a popular and historic sport in the UK, with a tradition dating back centuries. It is a multi-billion pound industry that attracts millions of spectators each year and generates significant economic activity.
There are two main types of horse racing in the UK: flat racing and jump racing. Flat racing is run on a level course and is typically shorter in distance, while jump racing involves horses jumping over obstacles and is generally longer in distance. Both types of racing are popular with spectators and bettors, and they take place at various racetracks throughout the country.
The most famous horse racing event in the UK is the Grand National, which is held annually at Aintree Racecourse in Liverpool. It is a jump racing event that is known for its challenging course and has become a national institution in the UK. Other notable horse racing events in the UK include the Derby, held at Epsom Downs Racecourse in Surrey, and the Royal Ascot, held at Ascot Racecourse in Berkshire.
Horse racing in the UK is regulated by the British Horseracing Authority (BHA), which sets rules and standards for the industry. It is responsible for the welfare of racehorses and the safety of jockeys and trainers, as well as ensuring fair and transparent racing practices.
In addition to its economic and cultural importance, horse racing in the UK also plays a significant role in the breeding and training of thoroughbred horses. Many of the world's top thoroughbreds are bred and trained in the UK, and the industry plays a vital role in the preservation and promotion of the breed.
Overall, horse racing is an integral part of British culture and a major contributor to the country's economy. It is a thrilling and exciting sport that continues to attract a loyal following and generate significant interest from spectators and bettors around the world.
