1st (2) (12/1 +76%) It's A Love Thing |
12/1(+76%) | (2) It's A Love Thing 12/1, Fair handicapper on Flat (stays 1¼m) who was given a considerate introduction to hurdling at Stratford in July and was found to have struck into himself when pulled up next time at Worcester. Likely be brought along steadily so best watched.
2nd (9) (6/1 +33%) Langton Wold |
6/1(+33%) | (9) Langton Wold 6/1, Fair handicapper on Flat, stays 1¼m, finished down the field at Redcar last time. Market check advised.
3rd (7) (5/4 +50%) Western Soldier |
5/4(+50%) | (7) Western Soldier 5/4, Useful on Flat in Germany, stays 9f. Racked up an impressive 5-timer towards the back end of last year and campaigned solely in Group 3 company this term, finishing down the field at Dusseldorf a couple of months ago. Interesting to see what the market says on yard/hurdles bow.
4th (6) (9/2 -13%) Trick Of The Tail |
9/2(-13%) | (6) Trick Of The Tail 9/2, Modest maiden hurdler who found his good run coming to a halt when sixth in 12-runner maiden at Cartmel (17.2f, soft) in August. Bounce back required but that is entirely possible.
5th (10) (5/1 +55%) Paddy Elvis |
5/1(+55%) | (10) Paddy Elvis 5/1, Modest bumper performer who needs to up his game if he's to feature now hurdling.
6th (12) (12/1 -85%) Whozatgirl |
12/1(-85%) | (12) Whozatgirl 12/1, Modest form in 3 bumpers but offered something to work on switched to hurdling after 4 months off when fourth at Kelso (16.2f, good to firm) last month, the race won by a much shorter-priced stablemate. Entitled to do better and yard couldn't be in better form. Player.
7th (11) (25/1 -525%) Touch Of A Dragon |
25/1(-525%) | (11) Touch Of A Dragon 25/1, Offered something to work on when third on first 2 starts earlier this year and can have a line put through his latest effort at Hexham (saddle slipped before halfway). Hood applied for hurdling debut and is one to consider.
8th (1) (150/1 -67%) Blue Bear |
150/1(-67%) | (1) Blue Bear 150/1, Has had a different trainer for all 3 starts under Rules and looks one with jumping problems judged on his couple of efforts hurdling. Easily opposed.
9th (5) (40/1 -150%) Swift Reply |
40/1(-150%) | (5) Swift Reply 40/1, Mr Medici gelding. Dam unraced. Unseated rider sole start in points (Apr 10).
10th (4) (50/1 -355%) Ruleout |
50/1(-355%) | (4) Ruleout 50/1, Fair in bumpers and having been strong in the betting, made an encouraging hurdling debut when third at Sligo back in July 2021. Pulled up after a clumsy display at Cork 3 weeks later and not seen since. Watching brief advised on first start for a new yard (had wind op).
11th (8) (40/1 -82%) At The Double |
40/1(-82%) | (8) At The Double 40/1, Fair handicapper at best on Flat, stays 2m, again tailed off on stable debut at Pontefract (17.1f, good) in August (previously trained by Sir Mark Prescott Bt). Cheekpieces retained for hurdles debut. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 4 race.
Better can be expected from Trick Of The Tail on the likely better ground here and Donald McCain's inmate shouldn't be far away. Western Soldier had some smart form on the Flat in Germany and also merits consideration on his hurdling debut. However, preference is for JOHNNY M, who looked booked for a solid third-placed finish in a competitive event at Kilbeggan in July but for falling at the final obstacle.
The market will no doubt reveal plenty with many of these making their hurdling debut, but preference is for JOHNNY M, who has experience on his side and shaped as if back in form prior to departing late on at Kilbeggan in July. Whozatgirl showed something to work on switched to hurdling after 4 months off at Kelso recently, so she's put forward as the main danger for her in-form yard, with Touch of A Dragon and Trick of The Tail rounding off the shortlist.
Milton Harris's hurdling debutant WESTERN SOLDIER was a useful winner on the Flat in Germany and gets the vote.

1st (3) (4/1 +38%) Royle Steel |
4/1(+38%) | (3) Royle Steel 4/1, Fair 2m winner over hurdles but there hasn't been a great deal of encouragement to be gleaned from his 2 starts over fences. Does have assistance of Brian Hughes, though. Below par over both hurdles and fences since February; handy mark if he can be revived.. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
2nd (4) (11/4 +0%) Coolmoyne |
11/4(+0%) | (4) Coolmoyne 11/4, Still looking for first win but has proved consistent over fences, making the frame again when second of 5 in handicap chase over C&D (heavy, 11/4) when last seen in March. Shortlisted. Has not been finding much at the finish and could find one or two too good again.. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
3rd (1) (10/3 +56%) Neigh Botha |
10/3(+56%) | (1) Neigh Botha 10/3, Maiden over hurdles after 9 attempts and little impact in a couple of outings for this yard. Needs to find improvement on switch to chasing. Will need to show some improvement to defy this initial chase mark.. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
4th (7) (11/1 -69%) Brickadank |
11/1(-69%) | (7) Brickadank 11/1, Came close to breaking his long-standing maiden status in 5-runner handicap chase (20.1f) at Newcastle in April. Disappointed at Southwell the following month but can't be ruled out on return here. On a competitive mark for this reappearance and acts on a sound surface.. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
5th (2) (8/1 -45%) My Little Toni |
8/1(-45%) | (2) My Little Toni 8/1, Sole success over hurdles came in 3-runner novice here (19.9f) in September of last year but couldn't build on that and was disappointing when last seen at Uttoxeter in July. BIt to prove on chase debut here. Had wind operation. 2lb lower for chase debut and should be a player if able to perform to her optimum.. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
6th (5) (4/1 +56%) Bergentown |
4/1(+56%) | (5) Bergentown 4/1, Little worthwhile form in 16 starts over hurdles in Ireland but left those efforts well behind, on first start for this yard, when scoring at Bangor (19.5f) in June. However, down the field in a trio of outings since, including on chase debut at Southwell latest. Took backward step on chase debut; drops 5lb; tongue-tie removed; handy mark if revived.. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
7th (8) (33/1 +50%) Scottsdale |
33/1(+50%) | (8) Scottsdale 33/1, Last success came in 2019 and has rarely threatened in this sphere. Best watched from 8 lb out of the handicap. Hard to catch right and is 0-12 over fences; well beaten in his last six chases.. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 5 race.
Coolmoyne posted several creditable efforts in defeat at this level last season and the seven-year-old must enter calculations once again. However, it could be worth chancing ROYLE STEEL, who may benefit from a 108-day break as well as Brian Hughes now doing the steering. Winning pointer Breeze Of Wind is another to consider on his handicap/chase debut for new connections.
COOLMOYNE is fairly treated on his return to action and looks the safest option in a race which makes minimal appeal from a betting perspective. Breeze of Wind and Brickadank can also make their presence felt.
The tentative selection is BERGENTOWN who looks to have the ability to have a big say from this mark.

1st (10) (7/1 -17%) Zwicky |
7/1(-17%) | (10) Zwicky 7/1, Showed further improvement on third start in handicaps when landing 7-runner handicap here (21f) in January, staying on to lead final 50 yds. Did best of those held up when third at Ayr final start and remains of interest ahead of return.
2nd (6) (4/1 +11%) Spot On Soph |
4/1(+11%) | (6) Spot On Soph 4/1, Right back on track to capitalise on a handy mark with something to spare at Market Rasen in August and good placed efforts later that month. Player.
3rd (1) (4/1 +27%) Prince Imperial |
4/1(+27%) | (1) Prince Imperial 4/1, Some encouragement in all 4 starts over hurdles at the start of the year (for Richard Hughes) and decent third on hurdles return at Newton Abbot. Return to further will suit and potentially well treated on Flat form.
4th (13) (2.25/1 +59%) Brian's Jet |
2.25/1(+59%) | (13) Brian's Jet 2.25/1, Returned to form when second in selling hurdle at Hexham (16.2f, good to soft) and decent third here on return last week. Looks competitive on form.
5th (2) (12/1 -71%) Sean Og |
12/1(-71%) | (2) Sean Og 12/1, Disappointed on chase debut in May but improved when second over hurdles on final outing for Margaret Mullins. Low-key start for this yard in handicap chase at Cartmel (21.2f, soft) but much better back over hurdles when second in novice at Kelso.
6th (3) (10/1 -43%) Jipekaa Machin |
10/1(-43%) | (3) Jipekaa Machin 10/1, Winner here in November. Back to form when fourth at Bangor final start. Headgear left off on return.
7th (12) (66/1 -100%) Scots Gold |
66/1(-100%) | (12) Scots Gold 66/1, Left Dan Skelton on the cheap and well held both starts for this yard.
8th (5) (16/1 +20%) Ballyquin Bay |
16/1(+20%) | (5) Ballyquin Bay 16/1, Fair maiden hurdler for Gordon Elliott and best effort for current yard when fourth of 9 in novice hurdle at this C&D (good to soft) 8 days ago. Tongue strap/cheekpieces on 1st time. Others more persuasive.
9th (14) (40/1 +0%) Just Hannah |
40/1(+0%) | (14) Just Hannah 40/1, Point winner who has yet to trouble the judge under Rules and it's easy enough to look elsewhere.
10th (7) (40/1 +20%) Balkotic |
40/1(+20%) | (7) Balkotic 40/1, Struck twice last autumn but out of sorts this campaign. Others preferred.
11th (8) (22/1 +33%) Aire Valley Lad |
22/1(+33%) | (8) Aire Valley Lad 22/1, Belatedly opened chase account at the twelfth time of asking in December. Only come close to giving his running once since, however.
12th (9) (16/1 +11%) Callisto's King |
16/1(+11%) | (9) Callisto's King 16/1, Yet to win a race but shaped well a couple of times over hurdles. Didn't take to chasing and back over timber now for new yard (sold from Dan Skelton £5,500 in August). |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 4 race.
Stable debutant Liberty Flame is worth a check in the market now entering handicaps, with his opening mark appearing to be workable. However, BRIAN'S JET has a more convincing profile following respectable third over 2m1f here on his return to action last week. The five-year-old may find enough improvement over this extra distance to land the spoils. Spot On Soph often gives her running and should be in the shake-up too.
PRINCE IMPERIAL was unsuited by the emphasis on speed on his return to this sphere at Newton Abbot and is worth another chance off what remains a tempting mark given his useful form on the Flat. The progressive Zwicky is feared most ahead of Spot On Soph.
The Phil Kirby-trained ZWICKY is open to further improvement and, if ready for this reappearance, he could take a bit of beating.

1st (6) (7/2 +78%) Reign Suepreme |
7/2(+78%) | (6) Reign Suepreme 7/2, Point winner but is a long-standing maiden under Rules. Close up when unseating 3 out at Stratford (27.5f) but remote third at Fontwell since. 0-15 under rules; well below par on his last three starts; others preferred.. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
2nd (7) (9/2 +50%) Lough Salt |
9/2(+50%) | (7) Lough Salt 9/2, Successful twice in 3m Doncaster handicap chases in early-2022 but form patchy since, well held at Market Rasen latest. Showed in August that he is still capable of getting involved but not easy to predict.. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
3rd (2) (9/2 +25%) Top Decision |
9/2(+25%) | (2) Top Decision 9/2, Sole success over fences came well over 3 years ago and has only raced 6 times since, posting respectable fifth of 10 in handicap chase at Hexham (24.2f, good, 16/1) 35 days ago. Entitled to come on for that but others more appealing. Handy mark but hasn't been able to take similar opportunities in the past year.. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
4th (5) (7/2 +36%) Humps And Bumps |
7/2(+36%) | (5) Humps And Bumps 7/2, On a lengthy losing run but has found some consistency since her wind operation this summer, latest when fourth of 10 in handicap chase at Hexham (24.2f, good, 13/2) 35 days ago. Others appeal more for the win. Handicapper has her measure at present but she's not ruled out of the frame.. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
5th (3) (7/2 +22%) Oceans Red |
7/2(+22%) | (3) Oceans Red 7/2, Three-time winner over fences with his latest success coming in this race by a wide margin last year off 7 lb lower. Ridden too aggressively when fifth at Bangor (24f, good) when last seen in May. Needs considering in re-fitted tongue tie/on the back of a wind op. 3m3f course winner; has had wind op; perhaps one to watch unless market vibes are strong.. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
6th (1) (10/1 -67%) Fiston Du Mou |
10/1(-67%) | (1) Fiston Du Mou 10/1, Bounced back from a couple of below par performances when making all in a match at Catterick in February. Not in same form later that month, however, and has since left Patrick Neville. Course winner; yet to win when fresh but competitive if fully wound up on his return.. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 5 race.
Humps And Bumps has been running running well enough at this level since the start of the year and she should go well once more off the same mark as her fourth at Hexham last time. However, preference is for TOP DECISION, who was fifth over 3m last time and the step up in distance could eke out the required improvement in order for him to score. Fiston Du Mou warrants a market check on his first start for the Stuart Coltherd yard.
OCEANS RED has had excuses on his last 2 starts and won this by a wide margin last year, so could be the answer. Whataboutyeh looks the type to resume progress back from a break and is a clear next best ahead of Top Decision.
The suggestion is WHATABOUTYEH (nap) who is unexposed and should be better suited by today's ground than the heavy going at Cartmel.

1st (8) (4/1 +33%) Karloss |
4/1(+33%) | (8) Karloss 4/1, No show in 5 starts for her previous yard but is one to monitor in the betting starting out for a new yard from a very modest mark. Cut little ice in five runs over hurdles in Ireland; needs a check, though, for new yard. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
2nd (6) (7/4 +65%) Leopolds Rock |
7/4(+65%) | (6) Leopolds Rock 7/4, Third-place finish at Uttoxeter worked out well and he found only one too good over C&D a week ago. Didn't look particularly willing when push came to shove, though. C&D winner; carried his head awkwardly when runner-up over C&D latest; still shortlisted. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
3rd (10) (14/1 -87%) Balranald |
14/1(-87%) | (10) Balranald 14/1, Successful over fences here 2021 and finally opened his account over hurdles in a Bangor handicap in May. Back to form at Kelso last time and merits respect. Without usual headgear when good Kelso second three weeks ago; up 2lb but considered. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
4th (1) (15/2 -25%) Ambassador |
15/2(-25%) | (1) Ambassador 15/2, Left Martin Keighley on the back of a win in July and made it 2 wins from 3 starts for current connections at Kelso 3 weeks ago, seeing off Balranald. 3 lb rise shouldn't prevent another bold bid. Went 2-3 for current yard at Kelso three weeks ago; up 3lb but still not taken lightly. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
5th (3) (16/1 -60%) Boundsy Boy |
16/1(-60%) | (3) Boundsy Boy 16/1, Opened his account in a 15.8f Huntingdon handicap in February. Hit the frame next 3 hurdles outings but off 11 weeks and he was disappointing at Stratford on final run for Oliver Greenall & Josh Guerriero. Only sixth at Stratford (2m2f) last month; he needs to bounce back for his new yard. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
6th (5) (40/1 -150%) Lady Hamilton |
40/1(-150%) | (5) Lady Hamilton 40/1, Lightly-raced maiden who posted her best effort over timber when third In Doncaster maiden (16.6f) in March. Not disgraced on Kelso handicap debut a month later and off since. Not discredited on handicap debut when 7th at Kelso in April; no forlorn hope after break. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
7th (12) (22/1 +67%) Strong Team |
22/1(+67%) | (12) Strong Team 22/1, C&D winner in 2021 but he arrives out of sorts and he's out of the weights here. C&D winner but he arrives on a long losing run; 6lb out of the handicap too. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
8th (7) (7/1 -56%) A Shining Moon |
7/1(-56%) | (7) A Shining Moon 7/1, Hasn't had much racing over hurdles and shaping up nicely in handicaps, placed on his last 3 starts and failed by the narrowest of margins at Kelso 3 weeks ago. Big player from the same mark. Won at Pontefract in May; very good Kelso second latest; big shout off unchanged mark. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
9th (2) (33/1 -50%) Kilkee Royal |
33/1(-50%) | (2) Kilkee Royal 33/1, Minor promise in his qualifying runs in Ireland and while handicaps are more suitable, this mark demands a lot more. Brought along steadily, ninth at Punchestown in June; can do better now handicapping. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|U| (11) (66/1 -100%) Point Of Honour |
66/1(-100%) | (11) Point Of Honour 66/1, Modest handicapper on Flat (stays 1¾m) winning at Catterick in July. Regular rider retained and showed some aptitude for hurdling starting out at Market Rasen but well held completed start since. Has failed to go on in three runs over hurdles; more is required now going handicapping. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|PU| (9) (9/1 +10%) Game Beaaa |
9/1(+10%) | (9) Game Beaaa 9/1, Has share of temperament/jumping issues but finally put it together when a smooth winner at Market Rasen in August. Travelled with plenty of purpose back fourth back at that venue 11 days ago. Won at Market Rasen in August and not disgraced when fifth there latest; in the shake-up. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|PU| (4) (12/1 -100%) Frisco Queen |
12/1(-100%) | (4) Frisco Queen 12/1, Signs of ability when trained by Shane Crawley in Ireland and better form for this yard, off 16 months when runner-up at Southwell a month ago. Same mark here and she's one to consider. Off 16 months before good Southwell second latest; can go well again off unchanged mark. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 5 race.
AMBASSADOR had Balranald back in second by just under a length when winning for the second time since joining the Micky Hammond stable at Kelso three weeks ago. The son of Invincible Spirit only has to give an extra 1lb away to his reopposing rival on this occasion and he should be more than capable of doing so. Leopolds Rock has hit the frame on each of his last two starts and he could have a say off the same rating as his second over C&D last month. A Shining Moon completes the shortlist.
A SHINING MOON has been knocking on the door over hurdles, and having come up a nose short at Kelso 3 weeks ago, he can gain compensation from the same mark. Leopolds Rock isn't straightforward but he has it him to be a big factor at this level, with Frisco Queen another to consider.
Paul Midgley's A SHINING MOON can race off the same mark as when a very good Kelso second and is taken to bag a first win in this sphere

Cheekpieces reapplied. Course winner; off 5 months and without headgear when eighth at Cartmel latest; considered. |

2nd (1) (0.91/1 +60%) Restandbethankful |
0.91/1(+60%) | (1) Restandbethankful 0.91/1, Found improvement, on first start for new yard, when winning 8-runner handicap chase over C&D (good to soft) 8 days ago, unchallenged. 7 lb penalty to carry now but looks the one to beat nonetheless. Wide-margin C&D winnner on yard debut; leading claims if backing that up under a penalty. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
3rd (2) (7/1 -56%) Gandhi Maker |
7/1(-56%) | (2) Gandhi Maker 7/1, Off the mark at Newcastle (16,3f) in January and backed that up with decisive victory over C&D the following month. Below par when last seen at Bangor in April but returns on a workable mark and must enter calculations. In good form until only sixth at Bangor in April; sort to bounce back, so not discounted. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
4th (5) (9/1 -125%) Moore Clouds |
9/1(-125%) | (5) Moore Clouds 9/1, Off the mark when making all in 7-runner handicap chase at Market Rasen (17.2f, good, 7/2) in June, going with enthusiasm. Things will be tougher off 6 lb higher mark here but can't be ruled out. Breakthrough win at Market Rasen in June; up 6lb but still merits serious consideration. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|PU| (4) (9/2 -13%) Getaway Jewel |
9/2(-13%) | (4) Getaway Jewel 9/2, Southwell winner (15.8f) in June who returned to form when creditable second of 6 in handicap chase at Kelso (17.1f, good to firm) 29 days ago. Claims off same mark but wouldn't want too much rain. Back on track when second at Kelso 29 days ago; he can go well again off an unchanged mark. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 4 race.
An impressive winner on his first start for this yard over C&D last week, RESTANDBETHANKFUL should be open to plenty more improvement and a 7lb penalty looks manageable. Getaway Jewel bounced back to form with a runner-up effort at Kelso recently and he also looks to be a leading contender, along with Moore Clouds, who broke her maiden in comfortable fashion at Market Rasen when last seen.
RESTANDBETHANKFUL went with plenty of zest when scoring on debut for Lizzie Quinlan here last week and may be able to follow up. Gandhi Maker rates the principal danger.
The vote goes to MOORE CLOUDS who is still low mileage in this sphere and, after a break, can build on her Market Rasen maiden victory.

2nd (3) (11/2 -100%) Backdoorflush |
11/2(-100%) | (3) Backdoorflush 11/2, Mount Nelson filly. Half-sister to bumper winner Finnthemagician. Dam (h127) bumper/2m/17f hurdle winner (stayed 21f). Makes plenty of appeal for a yard going great guns. Half-sister to bumper winner Finnthemagician; dam bumper and 2m hurdle winner. |

66/1(-32%) | (7) Vanilla Dancer 66/1, Dragon Dancer filly. Half-sister to 4 winners, including bumper winner Vanilla Run and ungenuine/poor hurdler Van Mildert. Worthy of interest if the market speaks in her favour. Newcomer from a yard that's 1-59 in bumpers in recent seasons. |

6/4(-25%) | (1) Micks Jet 6/4, Runner-up in a point and made the ideal start under Rules when scoring at a big price at Cheltenham 174 days ago. Sets a good standard and deserves strong consideration under a penalty. Came clear to win by nearly 10l at Cheltenham in April; could be useful. |

The chart reads from right to left to today's class 4 race.
The Lucinda Russell yard can do little wrong at present and the Kenny Alexander-owned BACKDOORFLUSH could be a nice recruit as she makes her debut. The four-year-old's dam won on her racecourse bow herself, which bodes well and she gets the vote ahead of the impressive Cheltenham winner Micks Jet, who has a 7lb penalty to overcome. Listentoyourheart is another to consider for a stable that knows how to ready one first time out.
BACKDOORFLUSH is bred to go well in this sphere and she represents an in-form yard, so a chance is taken on her to get the better of Micks Jet who, admittedly, sets a good standard on his impressive Cheltenham success five months ago. Listentoyourheart is another one to note on debut.
An interesting bumper. MICKS JET looked a decidedly nice prospect in coming home in isolation at Cheltenham back in the spring.
Ths is the racecard key.
