1st (4) (11/8 +83%) Final Edgar |
11/8(+83%) | (4) Final Edgar 11/8, Mid-field both starts in bumpers for Roger McGrath in Ireland last summer. Showed some ability sent hurdling when third of 8 in maiden at this course (19.8f) in January, but beaten a long way out at Catterick 12 days later. Not discounted back here. Encouraging third here on stable debut and this is a realistic assignment. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
2nd (11) (9/2 -80%) Trailblazer |
9/2(-80%) | (11) Trailblazer 9/2, Modest maiden on the Flat who finished well held at Newcastle on his hurdles debut. However, shaped better when runner-up in Kelso novice 24 days ago, staying on but no match for the easy winner. Enters calculations. Runner-up at 150-1 at Kelso and major player if that performance was no one-off. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
3rd (7) (33/1 -633%) Oscar Doodle |
33/1(-633%) | (7) Oscar Doodle 33/1, Modest performer on Flat (stays 12.5f), who won 3 times in 2023. Even keener than usual when well held in handicap at Newcastle (12.4f) on his latest outing in December and hood now applied as he goes over hurdles. Watch for market clues. Moderate on the Flat but 4-time winner and makes hurdle debut with yard having fine winter. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
4th (2) (5/2 -43%) Arlo |
5/2(-43%) | (2) Arlo 5/2, Fair hurdler for Stuart Crawford and, after 18 months off, showed that he retains plenty of ability when third in maiden at this C&D in October. Struggled in 2 starts over fences since, but no surprise to see him get back on track returned to hurdling. Major player. Has struggled in first two chases but leading claims judged on October third over hurdles. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
5th (9) (12/1 +76%) River Ayr |
12/1(+76%) | (9) River Ayr 12/1, Promise when runner-up in the first of 2 bumpers at Ayr last season, but has looked one for further down the line in 2 maiden hurdles at the same course, left behind before 4 out when sixth of 14 on his latest outing. Runner-up on debut in Ayr bumper but well beaten on his first two hurdle starts. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
6th (6) (33/1 +67%) Gold Ring |
33/1(+67%) | (6) Gold Ring 33/1, Modest winner at 2m on the Flat last year, but tailed off on his hurdles bow when eleventh of 13 in novice at Doncaster last month. Best watched. Two-time Flat winner but pulled up at 250-1 on last month's hurdle debut at Doncaster. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
7th (3) (16/1 +60%) Endofconversation |
16/1(+60%) | (3) Endofconversation 16/1, Well held in a 2-finisher point and hasn't offered much in 2 novice hurdles, in first-time tongue strap when failing to beat a rival at this course (19.8f) in November. Has had a wind op since, with hood now reached for. Has had wind op; market check advised but considerable improvement is needed. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
8th (10) (22/1 +33%) Rouse |
22/1(+33%) | (10) Rouse 22/1, Only poor form in bumpers and has made little impact both starts over hurdles, seventh of 8 in novice at Newcastle 8 months ago. Needs to leave his previous efforts behind on his reappearance. Didn't achieve much last spring on first two hurdle starts; probably best watched. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
9th (8) (25/1 -614%) Paris Lights |
25/1(-614%) | (8) Paris Lights 25/1, Fairly useful handicapper on Flat, stays 10f. After 5 months off (had a wind op), looked rusty on first run since leaving George Boughey when fifth of 12 in handicap at Wolverhampton (9.5f) 25 days ago. One to consider on his hurdles bow. Useful 1m2f Flat winner; makes hurdle debut in weak race and no surprise to see a big run. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|U| (1) (125/1 -150%) Acoustic |
125/1(-150%) | (1) Acoustic 125/1, Modest maiden on Flat for Richard Fahey but hasn't been able to match that level in 3 starts over hurdles so far, well held in novice at Cartmel when last seen 8 months ago. Has plenty to find on his return. Very modest on the Flat and well beaten at big odds on all three hurdle starts. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
10th (5) (50/1 +50%) Golden Valour |
50/1(+50%) | (5) Golden Valour 50/1, Modest on Flat and little encouragement in 2 starts over hurdles, faring no better in reapplied-visor when down the field in novice at Ayr in December. Looks to be up against it. Hasn't shown enough on his first two hurdle runs to suggest he's the one to be on today. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 4 race.
Not the strongest of contests in which a chance can be taken on PARIS LIGHTS. Paul Midgley's new recruit achieved a peak rating of 84 when trained on the Flat, so he would be a threat to all if taking to this new discipline. Arlo sets the standard, albeit not a lofty one, with an official rating of 103, and he looks the most likely danger. Final Edgar is also noted.
A fair hurdler in Ireland, ARLO shaped encouragingly on his stable debut when third at this C&D on his reappearance, so he is taken to leave his subsequent efforts over fences behind and open his account. Trailblazer stepped forward from his hurdles debut when runner-up at Kelso last time and could be the main danger, ahead of Paris Lights.
Preference is for TRAILBLAZER who was a promising second at 150-1 at Kelso last month on his second hurdle start.

1st (9) (11/10 +45%) Schmilsson |
11/10(+45%) | (9) Schmilsson 11/10, Fairly useful on Flat for Andrew Balding and shaped most encouragingly on his third start over hurdles when of 13 in novice at Southwell (15.8f, soft) 52 days ago, catching the eye with a smooth forward move from rear. Sets a clear standard of those with hurdling experience. Useful on the Flat, and displayed improvement over hurdles when clear second at Southwell. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
2nd (2) (7/1 +83%) Benefit Ben |
7/1(+83%) | (2) Benefit Ben 7/1, Maiden Irish pointer came home eighth of 15 in novice hurdle (40/1) at Ayr (16f, soft) on Rules debut 58 days ago. Unlikely to be of much interest until handicapping. Second in an Irish point last year and made reasonably encouraging rules debut in December. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
3rd (1) (20/1 +0%) Badlands Boy |
20/1(+0%) | (1) Badlands Boy 20/1, Ran only to a modest level in a pair of bumpers and paid the price for trying to give chase to a superior rival when eighth of 13 in novice hurdle at Doncaster (16.6f, soft) 28 days ago. Looks a good type physically and may do better. Well beaten on last month's hurdling debut but his bumper form gives him each-way claims. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
4th (8) (2/1 -223%) Reach For The Moon |
2/1(-223%) | (8) Reach For The Moon 2/1, Smart but lightly raced on Flat (barely stays 1¼m) for John & Thady Gosden, albeit well held both starts in 2023. A most intriguing hurdling recruit. Smart Flat-racer at his best; makes stable/hurdle debut in a very ordinary maiden. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
5th (10) (150/1 -275%) That One |
150/1(-275%) | (10) That One 150/1, Dartmouth gelding. Dam maiden pointer. Far from an obvious debut winner. First foal from a point runner-up; probably best watched on debut. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
6th (7) (10/1 +38%) Raffles Wonder |
10/1(+38%) | (7) Raffles Wonder 10/1, Fairly useful bumper winner has proven far too free and finished down the field on all 3 starts over hurdles. Hood now goes on. Course bumper winner last season but weakened tamely on all three hurdling starts. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
7th (5) (10/1 +29%) Heart Above |
10/1(+29%) | (5) Heart Above 10/1, Promise when placed on all 3 starts in bumpers but has been decidedly underwhelming in pair of starts over timber so far, only seventh of 14 in novice hurdle at Ayr (16f, heavy) 36 days ago. Still holds frame claims in a poor contest. Placed in all three bumpers but has disappointed on both hurdling starts. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
8th (6) (33/1 -136%) Not Now Tayto |
33/1(-136%) | (6) Not Now Tayto 33/1, £18,000 6-y-o, Notnowcato gelding. Dam placed completed start in points. Made frame both starts in Irish points, runner-up latest (Jan 7). Wouldn't have to be out of the ordinary to reach the placings on Rules debut. Bought for £18,000 after finishing second in soft-ground Irish point last month. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
9th (3) (80/1 -60%) Fixed Wing |
80/1(-60%) | (3) Fixed Wing 80/1, No better than mid-field in a pair of bumpers and ran only to a poor level when eighth of 14 in novice hurdle at Doncaster (16.6f, soft) on hurdles bow 28 days ago. Tongue strap on for 1st time and he could make more impact in this weak-looking contest. Displayed some ability on hurdling debut but is not the most obvious answer here. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
10th (4) (400/1 -100%) Golden Swift |
400/1(-100%) | (4) Golden Swift 400/1, Well held in a bumper and maiden hurdles at Ayr. Impossible to fancy. Struggled to get competitive when a big-priced outsider for two slow-ground Ayr maidens. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 4 race.
Once touted as a Classic prospect, REACH FOR THE MOON has been well below-par on each of his last three starts on the level. Now in the care of Jamie Snowden and sent hurdling, it would come as no surprise were the talented individual to get his career back on track now. Schmilsson finished a decent second at Southwell in December and any further improvement would bring him firmly into the reckoning, while Not Now Tayto is fancied to chase the pair home.
A very shallow contest in which SCHMILSSON is preferred to interesting hurdles newcomer Reach For The Moon, Olly Murphy's gelding clearly inferior to his market rival on the Flat but having improved with each run over hurdles so far and perhaps possessing a more solid profile to one who clearly hasn't been the easiest to get to the track. Badlands Boy is a very modest pick for third.
We haven't seen REACH FOR THE MOON since Royal Ascot but he was smart at his best on the Flat and is an interesting hurdling debutant.

1st (5) (13/2 +0%) Duo D'enfer |
13/2(+0%) | (5) Duo D'enfer 13/2, Veteran who built on previous promise following switch to this yard when successful here (19.3f) in December. No match for another in-form pair when third at Kelso (21.6f) 24 days ago and certainly no forlorn hope in new headgear. Travelled well to win over 2m3f here two starts ago; today's drop in trip could bear fruit. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
2nd (4) (11/4 +39%) Leading Force |
11/4(+39%) | (4) Leading Force 11/4, Irish point winner who finished runner-up 4 times over hurdles last season and, back from 9 months off, he ran up to best when third in that sphere at Musselburgh (19.8f) 33 days ago. A winning pointer previously, he's worth a look now switched to larger obstacles. Solid hurdles form and this point winner winner is a possible improver on his chase debut. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
3rd (2) (4/1 -14%) You Say Nothing |
4/1(-14%) | (2) You Say Nothing 4/1, C&D winner. Lightly campaigned last year but managed to score twice, latterly at Ffos Las (2m) in May. Fell on return in November but showed no ill effects when going down fighting at Chepstow (2m) a month later, finishing tired. Respected having been given 6-week break ahead of this. Two wins last spring and good second at Chepstow last time; can make another bold bid. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|F| (3) (4/1 -14%) Harel Du Marais |
4/1(-14%) | (3) Harel Du Marais 4/1, Still looking for his first win but it's been fairly promising for new yard this winter, not disgraced by any means (also jumped well) when fourth on chase debut at Leicester (15.9f) 4 weeks ago. Tongue strap goes back on and likely he can do better in this sphere. Respectable fourth on chase debut at Leicester and open to improvement over fences. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|U| (1) (9/4 -13%) Galice Macalo |
9/4(-13%) | (1) Galice Macalo 9/4, Fairly useful hurdler/chaser who went with far more zest as she belatedly opened her account in mares' handicap chase at Leicester (15.9f, heavy) 4 weeks ago, making all and clear from 2 out. This tougher but not ruled out if arriving in a similar groove. Easy win at Leicester last month; beat only 2 rivals but hard to knock that run otherwise. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 4 race.
GALICE MACALO was able to exploit a drop in class when winning a three-runner contest under Peter Summers last month and a subsequent 4lb rise not be enough to prevent Jane Williams' mare from completing a double. Previous C&D winner You Say Nothing merits respect having hit the woodwork on his latest outing, while Leading Force warrants closer inspection ahead of his chasing bow.
Claims can be made for most here, including previous C&D winner YOU SAY NOTHING, He ran a cracker when runner-up at Chepstow over Christmas and, given some time to get over those exertions, it would come as no surprise to see him firmly in the mix with his yard boasting a particularly good record here. Easy Leicester winner Galice Macalo and Harel du Marais head up the dangers.
Point winner LEADING FORCE has a solid profile over hurdles and could build on that form on today's first chase start.

1st (1) (13/2 -18%) Parvos |
13/2(-18%) | (1) Parvos 13/2, Fair maiden hurdler in Ireland who was in the process of shaping better than on her stable debut here 9 weeks earlier when unseating her rider 2 out at Kelso 40 days ago. Set to be placed before unseating rider last time; 2lb lower here; one to consider. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
2nd (9) (5/1 +44%) Celestial Fashion |
5/1(+44%) | (9) Celestial Fashion 5/1, Modest maiden who ran better than for a while with headgear reapplied when second of 7 in handicap hurdle at this C&D (heavy) 26 days ago. Ran well from the front over C&D last month but is 0-11 over hurdles now; others preferred. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
3rd (3) (6/4 +75%) Midnight Shuffle |
6/4(+75%) | (3) Midnight Shuffle 6/4, Steadily progressive last season and stepped up on reappearance run when third of 7 to a big improver at Doncaster (19.4f, soft) 28 days ago. Can make presence felt if coming on again for the outing. Yet to strike form this season but will be feared if strong in the betting. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
4th (8) (50/1 -257%) Telefenney |
50/1(-257%) | (8) Telefenney 50/1, Well held all 3 starts to date but yard can often improve horses from low bases, so needs a precautionary check in the betting on handicap debut. Raced too freely and showed no significant promise in her qualifying races; handicap debut. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
5th (5) (14/1 -100%) Purple Gown |
14/1(-100%) | (5) Purple Gown 14/1, Fair Flat winner who showed more than on hurdling debut when fourth of 13 in a Catterick maiden (15.7f) 27 days ago. Makes a quick switch to handicaps now and may do better still. Fair Flat-racer; ran okay in Catterick maiden last month; open to improvement in handicaps. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
6th (7) (13/2 +35%) You Some Girl |
13/2(+35%) | (7) You Some Girl 13/2, Fair bumper winner who attracted support and was in the process of showing better form when falling here in November. Not in same form at Kelso and Ayr since, however. 0-6 over hurdles but looked most likely winner before falling here on handicap debut. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
7th (4) (9/1 -38%) On Cloud Nine |
9/1(-38%) | (4) On Cloud Nine 9/1, Justified support to get off the mark at Bangor in August and has run creditably on her last 2 handicap starts, including when second at Fakenham (2m) on most recent outing in November. Should remain competitive. No match for winner when second on latest outing but enters calculations here. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
8th (2) (20/1 -233%) Leahs Tricks |
20/1(-233%) | (2) Leahs Tricks 20/1, Left previous efforts behind to land a Fairyhouse maiden in October. Has failed to reproduce that form all 3 outings since but should benefit from a return to calmer waters. Yet to build upon October's maiden win but there have been excuses; still has potential. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|F| (6) (8/1 -191%) Sawpit Sienna |
8/1(-191%) | (6) Sawpit Sienna 8/1, Having dropped below her last winning mark, proved at least as good as ever when successful in 13-runner mares' handicap at Taunton (had won the same event in 2023) 30 days ago, closed down late having not been fluent last 2. Respected up 6 lb. Held on well to win at Taunton last month; probably still on workable mark after 6lb rise. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 5 race.
Last-time-out scorer Sawpit Sienna must enter calculations in her current form, although her seventh-placed finish over C&D in early November off a 4lb lower rating does raise a few questions. With that in mind, it may be worth taking a punt on CELESTIAL FASHION. Although Ian Duncan's mare is 4lb out of the handicap, her runner-up effort behind the progressive Sunday Soldier over track and trip last month looks strong form. Parvos and On Cloud Nine have the form to be involved too.
MIDNIGHT SHUFFLE was steadily progressive last season and perhaps still needed the run when third to a big improver at Doncaster 4 weeks ago, so she's given the tentative vote. Taunton scorer Sawpit Sienna is respected up 6 lb, while Purple Gown's Flat form provides hope for better still now handicapping and she also needs considering.
Sandy Thomson's PARVOS was running well before her penultimate-flight mishap at Kelso in December and gets the vote.

1st (5) (11/4 +39%) Big Bee Hive |
11/4(+39%) | (5) Big Bee Hive 11/4, Handicap hurdle winner in Ireland who showed his first encouragement for new yard over this trip here last month, keeping on from too far back. Player if taking to fences at the first time of asking. Finished well for third over hurdles here last month; makes chasing debut from same mark. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
2nd (7) (11/8 +31%) Bebside Banter |
11/8(+31%) | (7) Bebside Banter 11/8, Dual course winner this winter, latterly over this trip 26 days ago. Appeared to have a bit in hand on that occasion so a 4 lb rise may not stop him. 2-3 over fences, the latter win gained over C&D; bold bid from the front likely. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
3rd (9) (6/1 +50%) Blazing Hartingo |
6/1(+50%) | (9) Blazing Hartingo 6/1, Looked a bit temperamental over hurdles and comfortably held in 2 chase starts at the end of 2023. Still early in his career and Brian Hughes up but others arrive with much more pressing claims. Has no compelling form claims but trainer does well here and has booked Brian Hughes. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
4th (6) (14/1 -211%) Cudgel |
14/1(-211%) | (6) Cudgel 14/1, All 6 career wins have been gained at Hexham. Merely closed up late when third over 2m there on his last starts in December. Back up in trip. Ended last year with three decent efforts but has done all his winning at Hexham. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
5th (1) (16/1 -100%) Augharue |
16/1(-100%) | (1) Augharue 16/1, Went close at Hexham on his return from an absence in October but has gone backwards in his 3 outings since. Has something to prove at present. Went close on seasonal debut but three non-completions have followed; risky at present. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
6th (4) (25/1 -150%) Dakota Moirette |
25/1(-150%) | (4) Dakota Moirette 25/1, Pretty useful chaser at his peak. Nothing like the same form these days but did show he can make an impact from his reduced mark when 9 lengths second at Catterick (2m) over Christmas. Needs to prove he can back that up. Ran fairly well last time but this regressive veteran has a very modest strike-rate. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
7th (8) (40/1 -60%) Stowaway John |
40/1(-60%) | (8) Stowaway John 40/1, Remains a maiden after 18 runs, although he fared about as well as could be expected when fourth over 21f here from out of the handicap last month. Able to race off his proper mark this time. Unable to land any sort of blow here on his two starts since a long absence. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
8th (2) (18/1 +10%) Mizuma |
18/1(+10%) | (2) Mizuma 18/1, Just bits and pieces of form in Ireland and comfortably held in 2 chases for new yard in recent months. Safely held on first two starts, latterly behind Bebside Banter over C&D last month. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|PU| (3) (8/1 -60%) Methusalar |
8/1(-60%) | (3) Methusalar 8/1, Looked set to go close when unseating 2 out over C&D in November and not seen to best effect when 6¼ lengths sixth at Plumpton since. Has first-time visor added to his tongue tie. One of the more likely types in this line-up. Was stalking the leaders before unseating rider here in November; still on a good mark. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 5 race.
C&D winner BEBSIDE BANTER regained the winning thread when making all last month. Chris Grant's gelding scored a shade cosily that day and a 4lb rise in the handicap may not be enough to prevent him from landing a third victory at this venue. Chase debutant Big Bee Hive ran with more encouragement on his third-placed finish over hurdles here in January. The seven-year-old could prove dangerous if proving as effective in this discipline, while Methusalar makes more appeal than Hexham specialist Cudgel for the minor honours.
BEBSIDE BANTER can make light of a 4 lb rise and extend his unbeaten Sedgefield chase record to 3. Methusalar looked set to go close when departing 2 out over C&D in November and is second choice ahead of chase newcomer Big Bee Hive, who caught the eye in a hurdle here last time.
This might go to chasing debutant BIG BEE HIVE, who stayed on well to take third over hurdles here last month.

1st (2) (11/2 +61%) Velasco |
11/2(+61%) | (2) Velasco 11/2, Back to winning ways at Hexham last June. Reached the frame on first 2 starts this winter but needs to shrug off a lesser run at Wetherby on Boxing Day. Won at Hexham last June but below par the last twice and needs to get back on track. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
2nd (1) (22/1 -83%) Jubilee Gold |
22/1(-83%) | (1) Jubilee Gold 22/1, Built on debut promise in Ireland when landing 2m novice hurdle at Fakenham in May 2022 but has failed to complete in 2 comeback outings this winter, pulling up at Ludlow then falling early here. Has run just twice since winning in May 2022; too soon to write off but has lots to prove. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
3rd (5) (16/1 -100%) Pilgrims King |
16/1(-100%) | (5) Pilgrims King 16/1, Back from 11 months off when fourth of 7 in handicap hurdle at Uttoxeter in November. First-time blinkers worn on that occasion retained. Claims if building on that from a workable mark. Heavy ground may not have suited the last twice; his wins have come on good/good to soft. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
4th (7) (4/1 +0%) Coup De Gold |
4/1(+0%) | (7) Coup De Gold 4/1, Snapped losing run over C&D 12 days ago. Only nudged up 4 lb and a threat if in similar form. Poor strike-rate but won here 12 days ago & there can be optimism he'll cope with 4lb rise. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
5th (13) (18/1 +28%) Ashjan |
18/1(+28%) | (13) Ashjan 18/1, Won 3 times over fences (twice around here). Recent efforts not all that inspiring, including in chases here the last twice. Others are more obvious. On a reduced mark but this 11yo has been struggling to get competitive. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
6th (9) (11/2 +15%) Just Call Me Al |
11/2(+15%) | (9) Just Call Me Al 11/2, Won 3 times here in 2021/22 season. Drawn blank since but signs he can do something from his reduced mark when second over 3m at Musselburgh in December. Player under Brian Hughes. 11yo who was inconsistent last year but was runner-up last time and could be in the mix. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
7th (4) (9/1 -29%) Kooky |
9/1(-29%) | (4) Kooky 9/1, Only modest form when reaching the frame in first 2 hurdles and down the field on his Wincanton handicap debut last month. Early days but needs to find improvement for the longer trip. Disappointing on handicap debut at Wincanton but in the picture judged on earlier promise. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
8th (6) (28/1 -75%) Ebendi |
28/1(-75%) | (6) Ebendi 28/1, Fairly useful Flat performer for Joseph O'Brien. Nowhere near that level over hurdles but his 3m Perth third when last seen in July shows he can be competitive from his mark. Good third at Perth last July but absent since; will need to be at the top of his game. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
9th (8) (9/1 +25%) Bushmill Boy |
9/1(+25%) | (8) Bushmill Boy 9/1, Long-standing maiden but has reached the frame on six occasions this season and had lack of stamina as an excuse for latest sixth over 2¾m at Newcastle. Each-way claims on his form in the autumn but below par the last twice and now 0-20. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
10th (10) (11/2 -22%) Swift Reply |
11/2(-22%) | (10) Swift Reply 11/2, Pulled up on Newcastle handicap debut in November but much better when length second of 12 over C&D 7 weeks later. Claims if reproducing that now. 50-1 runner-up over C&D last month on second handicap start; could be thereabouts. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
11th (12) (9/1 +44%) Buto |
9/1(+44%) | (12) Buto 9/1, Belatedly off the mark at Hexham in May and placed at that venue on his next 2 starts. Off 5 months, respectable fifth of 9 at Musselburgh (3m) in December. In good form last May/June and could build on his comeback 5th at Musselburgh in December. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
12th (3) (25/1 -285%) Ring Pretender |
25/1(-285%) | (3) Ring Pretender 25/1, Promise in 2 novice hurdles in 2022. Failed to make an impact in 2 handicap chases last winter but needs keeping a close eye on in the betting back hurdling after a year off. Well beaten last winter on both chase starts; off since but has shown promise over hurdles. |

|PU| (11) (40/1 -186%) Black Lightning |
40/1(-186%) | (11) Black Lightning 40/1, Losing run is mounting up but made the frame for the fourth time this season when second at Leicester (20.5f, heavy) in November. First run since. 11yo who is on a long losing run but bumped into one last time; not ruled out each-way. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 5 race.
Coup De Gold gained his first success in over four years here at the end of last month when appreciating a step back in trip. However, his overall record, combined with a 4lb rise and a return to 2m4f, is enough to look elsewhere for win purposes. The vote, therefore, goes to JUST CALL ME AL, who arrives following a runner-up display at Musselburgh over 3m in December and the drop back in distance appears to be in his favour. Any market support for Ring Pretender on her handicap debut over hurdles would make the eight-year-old of considerable interest.
JUST CALL ME AL might be worth siding with to build on his latest Musselburgh second returned to a venue which suits him well. Coup de Gold and Swift Reply, first and second over C&D on their latest starts, are others to consider, while the returning Ring Pretender is less exposed than most of these and needs keeping a close eye on in the betting having shown promise on both previous hurdle starts.
The very lightly raced 5yo KOOKY should be capable of much better than he showed on his handicap debut at Wincanton.

Oliver's Island |
(13) (33/1 -65%)33/1(-65%) | (13) Oliver's Island 33/1, Veteran who isn't firing fully at present but capable of making an impact from a handicapping perspective. Five-time hurdle winner; long in the tooth now, though, and 5lb wrong today. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
1st (5) (5/1 +17%) Dillarchie |
5/1(+17%) | (5) Dillarchie 5/1, Opened her hurdles account at Wetherby (24.1f) last April. On a handy mark and best effort this term when second at Catterick last month but consistency isn't her strong suit. Not one to rely upon but ran well in defeat in first-time cheekpieces last month. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
2nd (10) (17/2 -113%) Rumble B |
17/2(-113%) | (10) Rumble B 17/2, Long-standing maiden who produced his best effort for a while when third in a novice at Catterick 37 days ago. Should be suited by this longer trip, and is potentially well-in back in handicap company. Ran well in Catterick novice last month but now 0-25 over hurdles; others preferred. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
3rd (6) (40/1 -150%) On We Go |
40/1(-150%) | (6) On We Go 40/1, Won 3 times last season but has lost her way, soon losing touch and pulled up at Ayr 5 weeks ago. Significantly up in trip. Has been out of form for a while now and needs to turn a corner. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
4th (1) (13/8 +41%) Townhill |
13/8(+41%) | (1) Townhill 13/8, Point winner who has steadily found his feet over hurdles and relished the longer trip (also in cheekpieces) when scoring at Doncaster a month ago. More to come and expected to go well again. Came good in 15-runner Doncaster handicap with cheekpieces added last month; big player. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
5th (4) (15/2 -15%) Onestepatatime |
15/2(-15%) | (4) Onestepatatime 15/2, Three-time chase winner who has been shaping as if still in form lately. Likely better in that sphere but still worthy of interest from lower mark returning to the smaller obstacles with a tongue tie on for the first time. Three-time course winner over this trip over fences; contender off his lower hurdle mark. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
6th (12) (16/1 -14%) Howzat Hiris |
16/1(-14%) | (12) Howzat Hiris 16/1, Seen to maximum effect when opening her account in a Newcastle handicap (23.7f) in March, before going off too hard on her final outing of the campaign. Yet to find form this term. Ran well in defeat two starts ago but well beaten since; not the percentage call. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
7th (9) (28/1 +15%) Be My Sea |
28/1(+15%) | (9) Be My Sea 28/1, Modest handicap hurdler who has offered little for new yard since returning from a lengthy absence. Others preferred. Took step back in right direction over 2m last month; well worth a crack at this trip. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
8th (8) (15/2 +46%) Just Jess |
15/2(+46%) | (8) Just Jess 15/2, Inconsistent sort who was pulled up over fences at Catterick last time. Had run respectably a couple of times over hurdles prior to that and could bounce back quickly returned to this sphere. Has very patchy overall record but stays well and is a on a good mark; can't rule out. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
9th (11) (7/1 +30%) My Strong Man |
7/1(+30%) | (11) My Strong Man 7/1, Maiden handicap hurdler who has run with credit the last twice. Should give another account from the front but he's vulnerable to better treated rivals. Began this year with two good runs but is 0-18 over hurdles now; others look stronger. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
10th (3) (14/1 -17%) Hillfinch |
14/1(-17%) | (3) Hillfinch 14/1, Won mares' handicap at Huntingdon in March but she's failed to fire so far this year. Sliding in the weights but others are more appealing. Won off today's mark last March but ended 2023 with two tame efforts. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|PU| (2) (33/1 -371%) Victory Echo |
33/1(-371%) | (2) Victory Echo 33/1, Going through a good spell with Conor Rabbitt in the saddle over fences when last seen. Has 8-month absence to overcome but leniently treated back in this sphere, so worthy of consideration. In good form over fences last spring but eight-month break may have checked his momentum. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 5 race.
TOWNHILL has improved with each start this season and gained a first career success at Doncaster in a conditionals/amateur jockeys' event. A 5lb rise is negated with his rider now able to use his 7lb claim and the extra distance doesn't appear likely to be an inconvenience. Onestepatatime is respected on the switch back to hurdling following her recent third here over fences. Dillarchie and Victory Echo appeal most of the remainder.
TOWNHILL justified support with an improved display to score at Doncaster last time and, with more to come, he takes marginal preference over Rumble B, who the handicapper has taken a big chance with. Onestepatatime and Victory Echo are both of interest returning to hurdling off lower marks.
There is probably still more to come from TOWNHILL (nap), who doesn't look harshly treated by a 5lb rise for his Doncaster win.
Ths is the racecard key.
