1st (8) (11/4 -57%) Medinilla |
11/4(-57%) | (8) Medinilla 11/4, Rumble Inthejungle filly who was held back by inexperience but caught the eye with her finishing effort as the penny dropped when sixth of 12 in maiden at Newbury (6f, good to soft) on debut 8 days ago, noted finishing with running left. Respected with improvement anticipated. Caught the eye when sixth on last week's 6f Newbury debut; big player. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
2nd (5) (17/2 -31%) Leblon Girl |
17/2(-31%) | (5) Leblon Girl 17/2, Kodiac filly. 22/1, showed a bit when 6.5 lengths second of 6 in maiden at Nottingham (6.1f, good) on debut 39 days ago. Hood on 1st time and claims of being in the mix again. 6.5l second to a useful sort on 6f debut; hooded now; may do better. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
3rd (1) (7/1 +7%) Bishopton |
7/1(+7%) | (1) Bishopton 7/1, Invincible Spirit gelding who showed a lot more than first time up when third of 7 in novice at Ffos Las (7.4f, heavy, 25/1) 36 days ago. Underfoot conditions will hold no fears and claims of hitting the frame again. Third over 7.5f on heavy latest; gelded after; shapes as if he could be effective at 6f. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
4th (3) (12/1 -33%) I'm Next |
12/1(-33%) | (3) I'm Next 12/1, Green and offered little on debut back in the spring but having been gelded/off 5 months showed a lot more of what he's about when third of 9 in maiden at Beverley (5f, good to firm) 10 days ago, keeping on final 1f. Likely he'll be suited by 7f on that evidence. Off five months after debut (gelded) and returned with improved third at Beverley recently. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
5th (7) (28/1 -180%) Lima Sierra |
28/1(-180%) | (7) Lima Sierra 28/1, €18,000 2-y-o, Kodi Bear filly. Half-sister to 6f winner Barbusi. Showed a bit at a big price when sixth of 11 in novice at Beverley (5f, good to firm) on debut 10 days ago, keeping on without landing a blow. Likely she can do better but nurseries may be more her bag. Hinted at ability on 5f Beverley debut last week; likely to be wiser now and 6f could suit. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
6th (2) (4/5 +77%) Dothan |
4/5(+77%) | (2) Dothan 4/5, 52,000 gns yearling, Territories colt. Was well backed and made a promising mid-race move before displaying clear signs of inexperience when fourth of 8 in novice at Chester (6.1f, heavy) on debut 15 days ago, not knocked about. Looks sure to improve. Promise on recent 6f debut (heavy); should improve and go well. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
7th (6) (22/1 -175%) Amelia's Joy |
22/1(-175%) | (6) Amelia's Joy 22/1, Foaled March 1. 19,000 gns foal, Expert Eye filly. Half-sister to 3 winners, including useful winner up to 7.4f Byron's Choice and 2-y-o 6f winner Twilight Song. Dam, winner up to 9f (2-y-o 7f/1m winner). Precautionary market check advised on debut. The betting should help guide to expectations with this newcomer. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
8th (4) (40/1 -186%) Mister Sky Blue |
40/1(-186%) | (4) Mister Sky Blue 40/1, Twice-raced gelding. 8/1, sixth of 10 in novice at Redcar (6f, good to firm) 35 days ago, weakening gradually. Debut form certainly contained promise so he's not one to be writing off. Fifth on debut but backward step at Redcar since. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
9th (9) (150/1 -275%) Smooth Spot |
150/1(-275%) | (9) Smooth Spot 150/1, Foaled March 4. €3,000 yearling, Smooth Daddy filly. Sister to 5f winner Smooth Silesie. Dam unraced half-sister to useful US 2-y-o 6f (minor stakes) winner Surfside Tiara. Rare juvenile runner for this yard who is probably best watched on debut. A watching brief is advised on debut for this daughter of Smooth Daddy. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 5 race.
DOTHAN shaped better than his finishing position suggested when fourth on debut at Chester, having attempted to chase down the winner at a crucial point. With that experience under his belt, Ed Bethell's colt is likely to step forward on this occasion and should go well. Bishopton has been gelded following his third at Ffos Las and may also appreciate a drop in trip, while I'm Next's third at Beverley earns him a place on the shortlist.
MEDINILLA produced a promising first effort amidst inexperience and was noted finishing with running left when sixth in maiden company at Newbury (6f) 8 days ago. Looking a sure-fire improver with that under her belt, she can confirm the promise of that effort and make it second time lucky. Dothan looks another likely improver having shaped with promise at Chester, so he's next best ahead of Leblon Girl.
Having caught the eye in a Newbury maiden on last week's debut, Jack Channon's MEDINILLA could prove the answer to this opening maiden.

1st (5) (15/8 +58%) Law Degree |
15/8(+58%) | (5) Law Degree 15/8, Off the mark at Beverley (7.4f) in July and back to that sort of form when third of 5 in nursery at Musselburgh (8f, good to firm) 13 days ago. Respected. Arrives in form and won his previous nursery on soft; should go well. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
2nd (3) (9/4 +50%) Cristo |
9/4(+50%) | (3) Cristo 9/4, Lightly-raced maiden. May have been undone by high draw when ninth of 14 in nursery at Newbury (7f, good to soft, 9/1) 8 days ago and remains fairly treated. Well held on soft over 7f last week but claims on 1m AW third prior to that. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
3rd (1) (13/2 -136%) Blessed Star |
13/2(-136%) | (1) Blessed Star 13/2, Thrice-raced maiden. 5/2, second of 6 in novice at Haydock (8f, good) 22 days ago, no match for winner. Warrants respect on handicap debut. Runner-up all three starts; not obviously well treated for nursery debut but could improve. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
4th (2) (9/2 -64%) Captivate |
9/2(-64%) | (2) Captivate 9/2, Caught further back than ideal when fifth of 8 in maiden at Newcastle (7.1f) 25 days ago, needing stiffer test. Should have more to offer on handicap debut. Only fifth on AW latest but promise on turf before and could resume progression in h'caps. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
5th (6) (20/1 -150%) Bebside |
20/1(-150%) | (6) Bebside 20/1, Lightly-raced maiden. 40/1, good fourth of 12 in nursery at Thirsk (8f, good to firm) 21 days ago. Not out of things. Fourth in both nurseries but more will be needed to come out on top here. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
6th (4) (11/1 -83%) Greek Gift |
11/1(-83%) | (4) Greek Gift 11/1, Latest win at Beverley in August. Fourth of 5 in nursery at Wolverhampton (9.5f, 10/3) 19 days ago. Needs a couple of these to falter. Won two turf nurseries; also second on soft in August; player if lesser run on AW forgiven. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 5 race.
The drop back in distance is likely to see Greek Gift in a better light with her proven form on a softer surface another positive, while Captivate and Law Degree shouldn't be discounted. However, the vote goes to BLESSED STAR. Charlie Johnston's filly has filled the runner-up spot in novice company on all three starts to date and an opening mark of 77 may underestimate her true ability on nursery debut.
Preference is for CAPTIVATE, who looks to have been crying out for this sort of trip and begins handicapping off a fair mark. Law Degree may provide the chief threat.
Tim Easterby's LAW DEGREE is back on soft for the first time since beating a subsequent three-time winner at Beverley and gets the vote.

1st (4) (9/2 +36%) Our Absent Friends |
9/2(+36%) | (4) Our Absent Friends 9/2, Returned to winning ways at Haydock (5f) earlier this month and backed that up with creditable third of 9 in handicap at Musselburgh (5f, good to firm, 10/3) 13 days ago. Respected. Cheekpieces have perked him up of late; should go well under suitable conditions. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
2nd (6) (10/1 -122%) High Opinion |
10/1(-122%) | (6) High Opinion 10/1, Looked better than ever when winning 10-runner handicap over C&D (good to firm) 33 days ago by 1¼ lengths from Our Absent Friends. Effective with cut in the ground and merits consideration. Too strong for Our Absent Friends over C&D latest; up 5lb but profile is upwardly mobile. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
3rd (7) (3/1 +45%) Another Baar |
3/1(+45%) | (7) Another Baar 3/1, Course winner. Latest win at Doncaster in August. Fifth of 8 in handicap at Kempton (6f, 3/1) 22 days ago, needing stronger gallop. Claims on best form. Two course wins; conditions won't be an issue; not at best at Kempton latest. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
4th (9) (15/2 -25%) Albegone |
15/2(-25%) | (9) Albegone 15/2, Given a chance by the assessor and only narrowly failed to take advantage in handicap at Catterick (5f, good to soft, 10/3) 18 days ago. Remains on a workable mark and is one for shortlist. Runner-up in 3 of his last 4 starts; effective over C&D and on soft; others appeal more. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
5th (10) (9/2 +25%) Mattice |
9/2(+25%) | (10) Mattice 9/2, C&D winner. 7/2, bit below form sixth of 10 in handicap at Beverley (5f, good to firm) 10 days ago. Has good chance on pick of form. 8lb lower than for his C&D win in May; in better form than his figures suggest; contender. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
6th (3) (20/1 -43%) Faro De San Juan |
20/1(-43%) | (3) Faro De San Juan 20/1, Latest win at Windsor in July. Ninth of 13 in handicap (9/1) at Newcastle (6f) 18 days ago. Others more persuasive. Form has dipped the last twice but he's on a fair mark and handles all ground. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
7th (8) (25/1 +0%) Mondammej |
25/1(+0%) | (8) Mondammej 25/1, Unreliable sort. Thirty nine runs since last win in 2021. Thirteenth of 16 in handicap (28/1) at Thirsk (5f, good). Off 104 days. Not easy to make a strong case for. On a long losing run and not sure soft ground is what he wants; opposable despite low mark. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
8th (2) (8/1 +33%) Abate |
8/1(+33%) | (2) Abate 8/1, Course winner. Below form seventh of 14 in handicap (12/1) at Doncaster (6f, good to soft) 13 days ago. Can give a good account without posing serious threat to principals. Has often run well here; on a dangerous mark; chance enhanced if the ground dries out. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
9th (5) (4/1 +11%) Count D'orsay |
4/1(+11%) | (5) Count D'orsay 4/1, C&D winner who got back on scoreboard when landing 12-runner handicap at Chester (5.5f, soft) 7 days ago. 2 lb rise fair and another bold bid is likely. 2-3 over C&D; did well at Chester latest & 2lb rise looks generous; claims despite stall 1. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 4 race.
HIGH OPINION arrives searching for a fourth win from his last six starts and the five-year-old, who got the better of Our Absent Friends when the pair met here last month, is expected to come out on top once again. The latter backed up that performance by winning at Haydock on his penultimate start and has to be a leading player if in similar form. Stable companions Count D'Orsay and Albegone can fight it out for the minor honours.
COUNT D'ORSAY arrives on the back of victory at Chester last week and will be suited by underfoot conditions here. He can follow up. High Opinion and Albegone can also make their presence felt.
A competitive race but conditions will suit COUNT D'ORSAY and his Chester win last week was in spite of some adversity.

1st (11) (4/1 +20%) Eye Of Dubai |
4/1(+20%) | (11) Eye Of Dubai 4/1, Opened account at Catterick (7f) in April and largely acquitted himself well in defeat since, latest when creditable third of 8 in handicap at Carlisle (5.8f, soft) 30 days ago. Shortlisted. Beaten fav in all five handicaps this year; ability not in doubt but patience running out. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
2nd (8) (18/1 -125%) Secret Guest |
18/1(-125%) | (8) Secret Guest 18/1, Newcastle winner (6f) earlier this year and back to that sort of form in recent starts, latest when creditable third of 17 in handicap over C&D (good to firm) 42 days ago. Should give another good account. Two good runs since returning from a wind op, including C&D; slow ground a slight concern. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
3rd (12) (10/1 -43%) Fortamour |
10/1(-43%) | (12) Fortamour 10/1, Six-time C&D winner, including 6-runner handicap last month. Wasn't seen to best effect here latest and must enter calculations. Conditions to suit but not at his very best last time and others are more appealing. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
4th (2) (11/1 -29%) Baradar |
11/1(-29%) | (2) Baradar 11/1, 6 lengths seventh of 9 to Baldomero in handicap at Doncaster (6.5f, good to soft, 11/4) 13 days ago. Blinkers on 1st time. Others look better treated. Not found his best this year but down in the weights and new headgear could pique interest. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
5th (5) (12/1 +0%) Dakota Gold |
12/1(+0%) | (5) Dakota Gold 12/1, C&D winner. Latest win at Redcar in May. Last of 9 in handicap (16/1) at Thirsk (6f, good to firm) 21 days ago. Hard to fancy on current form. Veteran who has suitable conditions & the rail draw; below par the last twice though. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
6th (4) (15/2 -7%) Baldomero |
15/2(-7%) | (4) Baldomero 15/2, Career best when making all in 9-runner handicap at Doncaster (6.5f, good to soft, 10/1) 13 days ago. 5 lb higher now but another bold bid is anticipated. Dominant display at Doncaster a fortnight ago; up 5lb but still unexposed on deep ground. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
7th (9) (9/1 -50%) Tropical Island |
9/1(-50%) | (9) Tropical Island 9/1, Course winner. 13/2 and hooded for 1st time, fourth of 7 in handicap at Thirsk (7f, good to firm) 21 days ago. Can give a good account without posing serious threat to principals. 0-5 in handicaps this year but has shown promise & she's down in the weights; interesting. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
8th (6) (5/2 +71%) Quest For Fun |
5/2(+71%) | (6) Quest For Fun 5/2, Back to best form when good second of 11 in handicap at Chester (7f, heavy, 10/3) 15 days ago. Just 1 lb higher now and not taken lightly. Engaged 5.10 Haydock Friday. First 6f run for this yard; mudlover but he folded late on at Haydock yesterday. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
9th (3) (33/1 -230%) Magical Spirit |
33/1(-230%) | (3) Magical Spirit 33/1, C&D winner. Latest win at Doncaster in April. 50/1, fifteenth of 17 in handicap at this C&D (good to firm) 42 days ago. Others preferred. Three heavy defeats have followed his impressive winning reappearance; conditions to suit. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
10th (1) (11/1 -10%) Tacarib Bay |
11/1(-10%) | (1) Tacarib Bay 11/1, Not seen to best effect latest but had hit the crossbar in a couple of handicaps over this trip previously and must enter calculations. Two good runs over 6f in recent weeks but his form dipped behind Baldomero latest. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
11th (10) (18/1 -29%) The Turpinator |
18/1(-29%) | (10) The Turpinator 18/1, Latest win at Pontefract in June. 12/1, ninth of 11 in handicap at Haydock (7f, good) 22 days ago. Others more appealing. Feasible mark back at 6f but the prospect of slow ground tempers enthusiasm. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 2 race.
BALDOMERO looked back to something like his best on the soft ground at Doncaster when returning a convincing winner of a competitive sprint. The underfoot conditions remain in his favour and another bold bid is anticipated, despite a 5lb rise for that success. Secret Guest has solid claims on his third in the Great St Wilfred here last month, while the veteran Dakota Gold is not easily dismissed on this surface and is preferred to Tacarib Bay.
BALDOMERO got back on the scoreboard at Doncaster earlier this month and hasn't been harshly treated by the handicapper for that success. He may be able to follow up. Tacarib Bay and Eye of Dubai head the list of dangers.
3yos Eye Of Dubai and TROPICAL ISLAND can fight this out. The selection still has potential and has dropped in the weights.

1st (7) (14/1 -56%) Eldeyaar |
14/1(-56%) | (7) Eldeyaar 14/1, C&D winner. Latest win at Wolverhampton in September. Good fourth of 12 in handicap at Wolverhampton (6.1f, 7/1) 5 days ago, no extra late on having done plenty in front. Each-way claims with conditions fine. Three good runs this month; C&D winner who handles soft ground; contender. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
2nd (3) (4/1 +11%) Music Society |
4/1(+11%) | (3) Music Society 4/1, Twenty four runs since last win in 2022. Good second of 9 in handicap at Ayr (5f, good to firm, 12/1) 9 days ago. Up 3 lb on the back of that but this his first foray into class 6 company and worth a second look despite lengthy losing run. Good 2nd at Ayr last time (5f, good) and still feasibly weighted despite a 3lb rise. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
3rd (5) (11/2 +8%) White Umbrella |
11/2(+8%) | (5) White Umbrella 11/2, Resumed winning ways at Wolverhampton (6f) in April. Exploits mixed since but comes here having shaped better than bare result when sixth of 11 in handicap at Chester (6.1f, heavy) 15 days ago, no extra late on having made a big move out wide. One to consider. Latest Chester run needs upgrading; should get a pace to aim at; dangerous down in class. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
4th (2) (7/2 -40%) Run This Way |
7/2(-40%) | (2) Run This Way 7/2, Dual C&D winner. 3 wins from 9 runs this year. Latest win here in June. Creditable second of 11 in handicap (4/1) at Chester (6.1f, heavy) 15 days ago, doing well having chased a strong pace. Shortlisted returned to this venue. Conditions to suit, on a winning mark and ran well at Chester last time; should run well. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
5th (8) (10/3 +70%) John Kirkup |
10/3(+70%) | (8) John Kirkup 10/3, Fifteen runs since last win in 2023. 5/2, respectable fourth of 16 in handicap at Carlisle (5.8f, good to soft) 17 days ago. However, others appeal more for win purposes. Conditions fine and he's reliable enough; will need to raise game a notch to win though. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
6th (9) (40/1 -344%) Fylingdale |
40/1(-344%) | (9) Fylingdale 40/1, Creditable 2¾ lengths third of 10 to Run This Way in handicap at this C&D (soft) in May, staying on final 1f having started slowly. Capable of defying this sort of mark but she's the type who needs things to drop just right. Third over C&D when last seen in May; now tongue tied; not ideally drawn; others stronger. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
7th (4) (6/1 +57%) Happier |
6/1(+57%) | (4) Happier 6/1, Twelve runs since last win in 2023. Tongue strap on for 1st time, may of needed run after 4 months off when fourth of 10 in handicap at Hamilton (6f, good, 22/1) 6 days ago. Entitled to be sharper here. Yet to win a handicap but conditions no problem and this a drop in class; yard runs three. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
8th (6) (20/1 -300%) Hurstwood |
20/1(-300%) | (6) Hurstwood 20/1, 3-time C&D winner. 10/3, won 12-runner handicap at Redcar (6f, good to firm) 35 days ago. Fancied to go well again nudged up 4 lb. Three-time C&D winner; successful at Redcar latest; solid despite a 4lb rise. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
9th (1) (14/1 -56%) Woobay |
14/1(-56%) | (1) Woobay 14/1, Doubled her tally over 5f here in July. Down the field last 2 starts, but her saddle slipped when last of 10 in handicap back here (5f) 33 days ago. Needs to get back on track returned to this longer trip. Course win in July; needs to bounce back from two quiet runs (excuse latest); best at 5f. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 6 race.
RUN THIS WAY landed a hat-trick earlier this season and that included a couple of wins over C&D. Paul Midgley's mare has returned to the same mark as when last successful and she can resume winning ways with the ground in her favour. Recent Ayr runner-up Music Society represents last year's winning yard and looks a threat off her current mark, while last month's Redcar winner Hurstwood won a division of this contest back in 2022.
WHITE UMBRELLA shaped better than the bare result having made a big mid-race move from an unpromising position at Chester 2 weeks ago and, having steadily eased in the weights, she could well be worth chancing to confirm the promise of that effort here. Music Society and Run This Way are other in-form sorts to consider, as is recent Redcar-scorer Hurstwood.
Run This Way was in front of WHITE UMBRELLA (nap) at Chester last time but the placings can be reversed this afternoon.

1st (8) (18/1 +10%) Tilsworth Turf |
18/1(+10%) | (8) Tilsworth Turf 18/1, Winner at Leicester in April. However, not in anything like the same form in handful of starts since, eighth of 11 in handicap at Chelmsford City (7f, 100/1) 28 days ago. Others preferred. Hard to fancy on vast majority of form but he was a 125-1 winner on soft going in April. |

2nd (1) (11/1 -69%) Oso Rapido |
11/1(-69%) | (1) Oso Rapido 11/1, 13/2, seventh of 11 in handicap at Chester (6.1f, heavy) 15 days ago, weakening having helped force the strong early gallop. Mark has eased a little more and no great surprise to see a better showing from handy draw. Went very close last month but unable to replicate that form on his four starts since. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
3rd (5) (6/1 +33%) Canaria Queen |
6/1(+33%) | (5) Canaria Queen 6/1, Caught the eye at Hamilton (6f, soft) on penultimate start but failed to build on that when tenth of 12 in handicap (11/1) at Chester (5.5f, soft) 7 days ago, ridden 2f out and soon beaten. Needs to bounce back. Signs of return to form at Hamilton and not written off despite subsequent disappointment. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
4th (4) (5/2 +29%) Havana Pursuit |
5/2(+29%) | (4) Havana Pursuit 5/2, Course winner. Produced best effort of present campaign under a switch to front-running tactics when second of 7 in handicap at Hamilton (6f, good, 3/1) 5 days ago. Definite claims with a repeat. Course winner who went close at Hamilton on Tuesday and is on the shortlist. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
5th (2) (5/2 +0%) Thornaby Pearl |
5/2(+0%) | (2) Thornaby Pearl 5/2, C&D winner. Good fifth of 11 in handicap (5/2) at Chester (6.1f, heavy) 15 days ago, not beaten at all far despite having been pestered throughout on the front end. Well proven under these conditions and worth considering from career-low mark. Two-time C&D winner who arrives in pretty good form and can make a bold bid. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
6th (7) (8/1 +33%) Without Flaw |
8/1(+33%) | (7) Without Flaw 8/1, Twelve runs since last win in 2023. Fifth of 8 in handicap at Catterick (7f, good to soft, 15/2) 18 days ago, not ideally placed and unable to really open up. Pick of her form this year suggests she's capable of playing a part from this mark and conditions will hold no fears. Just 1-16 but well treated on this year's best C&D form and not a forlorn hope. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
7th (3) (12/1 -118%) Stormy Pearl |
12/1(-118%) | (3) Stormy Pearl 12/1, Landed back-to-back handicaps at Hamilton/Redcar in July. Excuses on 2 of his 3 starts since, keeping on when short of room last ½f when seventh of 9 in handicap at latter-named venue (5f, good to firm, 4/1) 11 days ago. However, he remains 6 lb above last winning mark. Two 6f wins in July and encouraging run over 5f at Redcar recently. |

8th (6) (40/1 -233%) Obligatory |
40/1(-233%) | (6) Obligatory 40/1, Record very patchy this season but he arrives here on the back of a good second of 8 in novice (18/1) at Carlisle (5.8f, good to soft) 38 days ago, no match for winner. Return to handicaps more suitable if he can back that up here. Ten-race maiden but runner-up in Carlisle novice last month and is not ruled out. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
9th (9) (14/1 -115%) Mr Trevor |
14/1(-115%) | (9) Mr Trevor 14/1, Bounced back to form with blinkers reapplied when good second of 8 in handicap at Catterick (7f, good to soft) 18 days ago, sticking on well having set a sound pace. Claims of making his mark again back at 6f provided the headgear has desired effect once more. Ran well from the front when runner-up over 7f on soft ground last time. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 6 race.
HAVANA PURSUIT was winning off a 5lb higher mark at this time last year. A recent second at Hamilton suggests Tim Easterby's inmate is primed to get his head back in front and today's soft going is another positive. Thornaby Pearl is potentially well treated having scored off a higher mark at Doncaster back in March, while Mr Trevor ran his best race for some time when second at Catterick 18 days ago and also merits consideration.
THORNABY PEARL ran a solid race, that despite being pestered throughout on the front end, when finishing a close-up fifth over this trip at Chester 2 weeks ago. Lining up here from a career-low mark, he's well proven on soft ground and can confirm the promise of that effort here. Havana Pursuit rates the chief threat following a good second at Hamilton earlier this week. Without Flaw and Oso Rapido also make each-way appeal.
Having kept on well over 5f at Redcar recently, STORMY PEARL earns the vote back up in trip. Thornaby Pearl is feared most.

1st (6) (15/8 +25%) Lady La Fay |
15/8(+25%) | (6) Lady La Fay 15/8, Excellent effort when runner-up at Carlisle in July (11.2f). Not in quite the same form when fourth of 7 in novice (7/2) at Doncaster (11.9f, good to firm) 65 days ago but a return to this easier surface can see her in a better light. Fancied to feature. Carlisle 2nd (1m3f, good) gives her a big shout but she was rather disappointing next time. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
2nd (2) (7/4 +7%) Al Ameed |
7/4(+7%) | (2) Al Ameed 7/4, Lightly-raced maiden who produced another solid effort without proving a match for the winner when respectable second of 7 in novice at Kempton (12f) 12 days ago. Sound claims for all he's yet to encounter ground this soft. Kempton 2nd (1m3f, AW) two starts back reads well; his two turf races were on good to firm. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
3rd (4) (20/1 -300%) Pagan Sun |
20/1(-300%) | (4) Pagan Sun 20/1, Lightly-raced maiden. Sixth of 7 in handicap (11/2) at Southwell (14.1f) 24 days ago, well positioned. Visor on 1st time. His AW efforts were better than his two on turf; visor on; unraced on softer than good. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
4th (3) (33/1 -65%) Famous Shoes |
33/1(-65%) | (3) Famous Shoes 33/1, Son of New Approach who was soon under pressure and never figured when tenth of 14 in novice at Southwell (12.1f, 22/1) on debut 25 days ago. Subsequently gelded and this should reveal more. Tenth of 14 when 22-1 for a novice at Southwell (1m4f, AW) early this month; gelded since. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
5th (1) (9/4 +25%) Creatif |
9/4(+25%) | (1) Creatif 9/4, Fairly useful colt who made a winning debut at Saint-Cloud (12f) in May and similar form when third of 6 in minor event back at that course a month later. Acquired by new yard for no less than €140,000 thereafter and he's interesting starting out for yard in fine form. 1st and 3rd over 1m4f in France; 140,000euros sale in July; 7lb penalty but unexposed. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
6th (5) (50/1 -213%) Krissy |
50/1(-213%) | (5) Krissy 50/1, Calyx filly. Held back by inexperience but was getting the message late on when seventh of 14 in maiden (40/1) at Carlisle (11.2f, good to soft) on debut 17 days ago. Looks sure to improve and increase in trip looks in her favour. 40-1 seventh of 14 from the back at Carlisle (1m3f, soft) was promising, but modest form. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 5 race.
Creatif changed hands for 140,000 euros after finishing third in France last time and it will be interesting to see how he fares in the market. However, AL AMEED looks the way to go. The son of Kodiac has filled the runner-up berth at Kempton the last twice and he sets the standard with a rating of 84. Lady La Fay is another to keep an eye on after her fourth at Doncaster.
AL AMEED's effectiveness under these conditions needs to be taken on trust but he's shown more than enough to think a race of this nature is within reach and he earns the vote to get off the mark back on turf. Lady La Fay may emerge as the chief threat back on an easier surface ahead of David O'Meara's French-recruit Creatif.
Al Ameed and Lady La Fay are top on ratings but today's surface will be very different. A chance is taken on ex-French CREATIF.

1st (5) (9/2 +10%) Merrijig |
9/2(+10%) | (5) Merrijig 9/2, Returned to best to capitalise on the drop back in grade in 12-runner handicap at Carlisle (17.2f, good to soft) 54 days ago, well on top finish. 3 lb rise shouldn't prevent another good run. 2m1f Carlisle win latest; his three runs on good to soft or soft left more to be desired. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
2nd (1) (9/4 +18%) Maxident |
9/4(+18%) | (1) Maxident 9/4, Heavy-ground novice winner last spring and underlined how well he copes with testing ground when second in 2¼m Pontefract handicap on reappearance. Stiff task when pulled up in Queen Alexandra Stakes at Royal Ascot but drops appreciably in grade on first start for new yard (7-lb claimer booked). Two placed efforts (2m2f/2m) in the mud this spring give encouragement. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
3rd (4) (16/1 -60%) Two Auld Pals |
16/1(-60%) | (4) Two Auld Pals 16/1, Latest win at Hamilton in May but has been a bit disappointing in 3 runs since. Blinkers on for 1st time. Below form lately and experiments with headgear, but soft or heavy ground looks a big plus. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
4th (3) (13/2 +35%) Zimmerman |
13/2(+35%) | (3) Zimmerman 13/2, Capitalised on a reduced mark at York in July but wasn't in anything like the same form at Chester (15.9f, good to firm, 15/2) 28 days ago. Last year's sole win was over 2m on heavy and he won at York (2m, good to soft) this July. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
5th (7) (33/1 -230%) Spantik |
33/1(-230%) | (7) Spantik 33/1, C&D winner who left his reappearance well behind when second of 7 in C&D handicap (good to firm) 32 days ago. Claims with a repeat. Won last year over C&D; 2nd on latest start but soft or heavy ground is a big worry. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
6th (2) (11/1 -69%) Clansman |
11/1(-69%) | (2) Clansman 11/1, Course winner. 2 wins from 6 runs this year. Respectable sixth of 10 in handicap (11/1) at Chester (12.3f, soft) 14 days ago. Significantly back up in trip. Productive March/April, mostly in the mud; 140 days off before a respectable latest show. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
7th (6) (9/4 -13%) Tokyo Bay |
9/4(-13%) | (6) Tokyo Bay 9/4, Winner here in April. Not disgraced both starts in handicaps subsequently and interesting now returning to softer ground following a break/gelding operation. Gelded and absent four months; interesting prospect for staying trips in the mud. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 4 race.
Tokyo Bay has competed in much deeper contests than this on both of his handicap starts to date. He has been gelded since his most recent start and might get closer at this lower level. However, the vote goes to track-and-trip winner SPANTIK, who was beaten a length into second over this C&D last month and he has lots in his favour as he bids to go one better off 1lb higher. Last-time-out winner Merrijig is another to consider.
MAXIDENT goes well in the mud and is taken to capitalise on a notable drop in grade having contested the Queen Alexandra Stakes at Royal Ascot when last seen in June. Tokyo Bay and Merrijig are feared most.
Most should have their chances boosted by soft or heavy ground, including the lightly raced 3yo TOKYO BAY. Maxident is next best.
Ths is the racecard key.
