Izzy's Grey |
(8) (22/1 -10%)22/1(-10%) | (8) Izzy's Grey 22/1, €10,000 3-y-o, Jukebox Jury gelding. Dam unraced half-sister to very smart hurdler/smart chaser (stayed 3m) Fingal Bay. Betting ought to prove a useful guide on debut. Out of a half-sister to smart jumper Fingal Bay but probably best watched on debut. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
1st (2) (0.73/1 +47%) Songo |
0.73/1(+47%) | (2) Songo 0.73/1, Developed into a fairly useful performer on the Flat last year, winning three times. Back over hurdles, scored with plenty in hand in a C&D novice 5 weeks ago. Will need to brush up his jumping but big player once more if doing so. Off the mark over hurdles with easy win in uncompetitive C&D novice last month. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
2nd (1) (5/1 -25%) Donnie Azoff |
5/1(-25%) | (1) Donnie Azoff 5/1, Fair winning hurdler (at 16.5f) last term who hasn't looked as convincing over fences to date, bad mistake 3 out and no threat thereafter when last of 3 at Uttoxeter (20f) 3 weeks ago. No surprise to see a better showing returned to timber. Well beaten over fences this month but is a fair hurdler when on song. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
3rd (5) (5/1 -25%) Spitalfield |
5/1(-25%) | (5) Spitalfield 5/1, Fair in bumpers (placed final 3 starts in that sphere) but made a discouraging start over hurdles when unseating fifth at Fontwell (21.7f) in May, jumping none too fluently. This ought to reveal more. Came to grief on hurdling debut in May but was second in three of his four bumpers. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
4th (3) (11/1 -83%) Our Brother John |
11/1(-83%) | (3) Our Brother John 11/1, Winning pointer who is bred to stay well and shaped in kind when third of 11 in novice hurdle at Worcester (20f) 3 weeks ago. Feasible to think he can build on that but likely type for later on. Winning pointer; shaped with significant promise when third on recent hurdle debut. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
5th (7) (16/1 -14%) Blackacre |
16/1(-14%) | (7) Blackacre 16/1, Black Sam Bellamy gelding. Aided by a good position but still showed ability when third on debut in an 11-runner Ludlow bumper in April. Acquired by new yard for £17,000 in May and interesting to see where he figures in the market now sent hurdling. Bought for £17,000 after coming third in Ludlow bumper in April; stable/hurde debut today. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
6th (4) (20/1 +0%) Premiumaccess |
20/1(+0%) | (4) Premiumaccess 20/1, Sole success to date came over fences back in 2020 and largely been struggling in that sphere in recent months. Switch back to hurdling needs to have positive effect now. Below best over fences lately but might cope better than some if the ground deteriorates. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 3 race.
SONGO won as an odds-on favourite should on his return to hurdles here last month and a reproduction of that effort may see Milton Harris' gelding add another C&D victory to his tally. This is the furthest Donnie Azoff has gone, but he can't be discounted now back from the larger obstacles and is feared most. Spitalfield's jumping let him down at Fontwell but still completes the shortlist.
Despite some hit-and-miss jumping, SONGO still proved a class apart when opening his account in this sphere in a C&D novice 5 weeks ago and, in the hope he's sharper in that department, a bold showing could be on the cards again under a penalty. Donnie Azoff, returned to timber, may emerge as the lead threat, with Spitalfield and Blackacre another couple to note.
Songo is an obvious starting point but the pick is DONNIE AZOFF, who has the form to pose a potent threat if back on song.

1st (3) (7.5/1 +12%) Investment Manager |
7.5/1(+12%) | (3) Investment Manager 7.5/1, Opened chase account at Exeter (19.2f, heavy) in April but has tended to struggle for consistency, again looking hard work when third of 5 in handicap chase at this C&D (good) 24 days ago. Others preferred. 1-8 over fences and his form has been up and down in this sphere; risks attached. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
2nd (7) (6.5/1 +46%) Call Of The Loon |
6.5/1(+46%) | (7) Call Of The Loon 6.5/1, Struck on debut for new yard at Stratford last August and has continued to run well in 3 starts since, despite looking in need of a stiffer test when third of 8 in handicap chase (12/1) at Perth (23.8f, good) 25 days ago, Respected. 12yo who has a solid record over fences for his current yard and he should go well again. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
3rd (1) (4.5/1 -29%) Jony Max |
4.5/1(-29%) | (1) Jony Max 4.5/1, Won here early last season and has generally held his form well in defeat since, again just thwarted in a tight finish when second of 8 in handicap chase at Cartmel (25.5f, good to soft) 31 days ago. Now races from career-high mark but should give another good account. C&D winner who has gone close in two of his three runs this season; respected. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
4th (5) (8/1 -33%) Easkey Lad |
8/1(-33%) | (5) Easkey Lad 8/1, Improved to win a pair of 3m Ffos Las handicaps in May and June before facing a very stiff task from well out of the weights in the Summer Cup at Uttoxeter last time. This is more realistic and he's respected. Won two in a row at Ffos Las but his progress came to a halt at Uttoxeter last time. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
5th (6) (4.5/1 +0%) Manintheshadows |
4.5/1(+0%) | (6) Manintheshadows 4.5/1, Failed to complete on his first 2 starts over fences but proved his aptitude when second of 12 in handicap chase at Worcester (23f, good) 26 days ago. Not ruled out. Four-time hurdle winner who was a promising second over fences last time; in the mix. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
6th (8) (3.5/1 +42%) O'faolains Lad |
3.5/1(+42%) | (8) O'faolains Lad 3.5/1, Out of the handicap but got back on track after a wind-op when second of 5 in handicap chase at this C&D (good) 24 days ago, albeit doing so in rather laboured fashion. This is a stronger race than he need contest again but can't be discounted after that effort. Back to form with a second over C&D last time and has claims if he can back that up. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
7th (2) (33/1 -83%) Powerful Position |
33/1(-83%) | (2) Powerful Position 33/1, Progressive in 2021/22, winning 4 times. Didn't really get the chance to show much last season, beaten by a handicap blot in a 3-runner handicap at Chepstow before turning a lacklustre effort at Cheltenham. Market looks best guide on return from 9-month break. 4-11 over fences but was disappointing in last two runs; now returns after wind surgery. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|PU| (4) (5.5/1 -38%) Hunting Percival |
5.5/1(-38%) | (4) Hunting Percival 5.5/1, Seemed to relish the step up in trip when winning 7-runner handicap hurdle at Stratford (22f) earlier this month and made a far better fist of his second attempt chasing when runner-up at that same course (22.6f, good) 15 days ago. Surely has more to come over fences. Unexposed chaser who is in good form and has claims on this step back up in trip. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 4 race.
JONY MAX found only a subsequent winner too strong at Cartmel and Christian Williams' charge is fancied to register a first success of the season off only 2lb higher. Easkey Lad found the Summer Cup at Uttoxeter too hot to handle, but was progressive at Ffos Las prior to it and better is expected in these calmer waters. He could give the selection most to think about, ahead of Manintheshadows and O'Faolains Lad.
HUNTING PERCIVAL was a winner over hurdles at Stratford on his penultimate outing and proved himself just as good over fences when second there on his latest outing. He's fancied to go one better on just his third chase start, with Easkey Lad, who was in fine heart before being meeting much tougher opposition last time, and the consistent Jony Max also much respected.
The vote goes to JONY MAX, who has found more progress this summer and was only narrowly denied in a similar race at Cartmel last time.

1st (5) (5/1 +38%) Clearance |
5/1(+38%) | (5) Clearance 5/1, Having dropped below his last winning mark, took advantage when scoring in good style at this C&D in June. Followed that effort with a creditable second back here a fortnight ago and he can give another good account. Backed up last month's C&D win with another good run two weeks ago; in the mix again. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
2nd (2) (10/1 -122%) Nibras Gold |
10/1(-122%) | (2) Nibras Gold 10/1, Fair stayer on the Flat who doubled his tally in this sphere back from 9 months off (had wind op) in handicap at Ffos Las in May. Not discredited when third at Worcester next time, but will need to get back on the up with cheekpieces now applied. Only third when odds on last time but won in May, after a break and not yet fully exposed. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
3rd (3) (2/1 +27%) Sisterandbrother |
2/1(+27%) | (3) Sisterandbrother 2/1, Has taken well to hurdling, opening his account at the second attempt at Huntingdon in May. Resumed his progress when runner-up in handicap at Market Rasen 22 days ago and he can build on that effort to return to winning ways. Went up 4lb for his close second three weeks ago but still a likely contender. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
4th (1) (2.5/1 +25%) Zabeel Champion |
2.5/1(+25%) | (1) Zabeel Champion 2.5/1, Smart handicapper at best on Flat and, after 6 months off, recorded a third success from 7 starts over hurdles when landing handicap at Perth 25 days ago, despite being found to have bled. Not dismissed lightly. Suited by drop back to 2m when winning this month and 3lb rise does not look excessive. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
5th (4) (8.5/1 -42%) Supposedtobe |
8.5/1(-42%) | (4) Supposedtobe 8.5/1, Fair hurdler who landed a Uttoxeter seller in June on final outing for Noel C. Kelly. Pulled up on first start for current yard, but back on the level (in first-time tongue strap) he won at Pontefract 10 days ago. Task is to back up his latest effort returned to hurdles. Pulled up over hurdles on this month's stable debut but has since won on the Flat. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
6th (7) (20/1 -122%) Up For Appeal |
20/1(-122%) | (7) Up For Appeal 20/1, Fair form in bumpers when trained by Sean Thomas Doyle in Ireland and matched that level on his hurdles debut when second of 4 in a Newbury maiden in February. Below expectations when fourth of 9 at Plumpton in May, but he could get back on track now handicapping. Modest form when fourth in Plumpton maiden in May but may improve in handicaps. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
7th (6) (11/1 -22%) Ridgeway |
11/1(-22%) | (6) Ridgeway 11/1, Promising start over fences when impressively landing a Kempton handicap in October. Hinted at a revival when third at Ayr in April but hasn't built on that effort in two starts since, looking none too keen last time. Has had a wind op ahead of return to hurdling. Pulled up in latest chase but had wind op last month and is on good mark for hurdle return. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 4 race.
ZABEEL CHAMPION justified strong support when defying a 192-day absence at Perth and should take some stopping off only 3lb higher. Nibras Gold had to settle for third when sent off at odds-on at Worcester, although first-time cheekpieces might eke some improvement out of David Pipe's five-year-old and it's too soon to be writing him off. Sisterandbrother has been raised 4lb after going down by just a neck at Market Rasen, but he can't be discounted either.
SISTERANDBROTHER resumed his progress over hurdles when second at Market Rasen last time, losing out by only a neck, so he is taken to go one better with more still to offer in this sphere. Clearance has run well at this C&D on his last 2 starts and is respected, while Zabeel Champion also merits consideration.
The most interesting runner is arguably RIDGEWAY, who has lost his way over fences but reverts to hurdling on a very attractive mark.

1st (8) (20/1 -25%) Dan's Chosen |
20/1(-25%) | (8) Dan's Chosen 20/1, Held form well for a trio of starts after winning at Fakenham (24.2f) in October but now has plenty to prove after some very poor efforts. Mark continues to fall but he's now 1-10 over fences and has plenty to prove. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
2nd (7) (9/1 -6%) Glajou |
9/1(-6%) | (7) Glajou 9/1, Unreliable individual who turned in one of his better efforts when 12 lengths second of 6 to Line of Descent in handicap chase at Southwell (20.4f, good to firm) 35 days ago. Needs to back it up. Won at Worcester last August but he hasn't really threatened since; needs to find more. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
3rd (2) (4.5/1 -29%) Enemenemynemo |
4.5/1(-29%) | (2) Enemenemynemo 4.5/1, Well backed and took his form up a notch when getting off the mark in 4-runner handicap chase at Perth (20.1f, good) 25 days ago. Still low mileage and a fluent jumper so has more to offer. Big shout. Lightly raced 8yo who made all at Perth last time and is open to more progress over fences. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
4th (5) (10/1 +0%) Kauto The King |
10/1(+0%) | (5) Kauto The King 10/1, C&D winner who finished tired when 24 lengths third of 5 to Lermoos Legend in handicap chase at Worcester (23f, good to soft) 21 days ago. This shorter trip should suit but he's an ungenuine type overall. Eight-time chase winner but he's regressed since last summer and others appeal more. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
5th (3) (5.5/1 +39%) Glengeever |
5.5/1(+39%) | (3) Glengeever 5.5/1, Point winner/dual winner over hurdles. Runner-up both starts in this sphere, collared late having been clear at the last in 3-runner Hexham handicap last month. Should have more to offer over fences. Considered. Unexposed chaser who seemed to throw it away when idling at Hexham; on same mark here. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|F| (1) (3/1 +14%) Fat Sam |
3/1(+14%) | (1) Fat Sam 3/1, C&D winner who returned to fences with a good second of 5 in handicap chase at this C&D (good) 34 days ago. Winner has gone in again so he rates a player off an unchanged mark. Four-time chase winner who chased home an improver over C&D last month; respected. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|U| (6) (8/1 +6%) Line Of Descent |
8/1(+6%) | (6) Line Of Descent 8/1, Got off the mark over fences at Stratford in April and a winner at Cartmel and Southwell since. Turned in a rare poor effort back at Stratford last time but he's the sort to bounce back. Disappointing at Stratford but that was after a progressive spell and he's not ruled out. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|PU| (4) (3.5/1 +0%) Lermoos Legend |
3.5/1(+0%) | (4) Lermoos Legend 3.5/1, Resumed winning ways in 5-runner handicap chase at Worcester (23f, good to soft) 21 days ago, suited by increase in trip. Blinkers go on back in distance now so he's still not taken lightly. Won at Worcester, despite jumping right; up 4lb but he's respected in new headgear. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 4 race.
LERMOOS LEGEND gained reward for some fine efforts in defeat with a two-length success at Worcester over 2m7f earlier this month. A 4lb raised mark may not be enough to halt his progression, especially as the application of first-time blinkers could bring about further improvement. Line Of Descent could only manage third at Stratford but will appreciate the longer distance and is feared ahead of Perth winner Enemenemynemo, who is now 2lb higher.
ENEMENEMYNEMO impressed with his jumping when going in at Perth and with few miles still on the clock he can follow up at the chief expense of C&D scorer Fat Sam, who rates a big threat. Both Glengeever and Line of Descent can have a say too in a competitive handicap chase.
Several have possibilities but the vote goes to FAT SAM (nap) who chased home a major improver in a Class 3 event over C&D last time.

1st (4) (8/1 -7%) Caius Marcius |
8/1(-7%) | (4) Caius Marcius 8/1, Admirable veteran who won 4 times last season (3 of them under Brian Hughes). Respectable third at Huntingdon when last seen in May and should give a good account at a venue where he won 2 chases earlier in his career. Sprightly veteran; won in April, after a break, and is probably still on a workable mark. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
2nd (3) (4/1 +0%) Thirtyfourstitches |
4/1(+0%) | (3) Thirtyfourstitches 4/1, Better than ever when making a successful reappearance over C&D a fortnight ago, proving most determined to see off the reopposing Eritage by 2 lengths. Not very consistent since the autumn but won over C&D this month; player if in right mood. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
3rd (6) (16/1 -33%) Name In Lights |
16/1(-33%) | (6) Name In Lights 16/1, Won twice over hurdles back in 2021/22. Didn't take to fences but back on track returned to hurdles when winning a 26.5f course handicap last month. Failed to back it up when well held at Cartmel 9 days ago. Well beaten on heavy ground last time but better judged on good-ground couse win in June. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
4th (8) (12/1 -60%) One Touch |
12/1(-60%) | (8) One Touch 12/1, In good form with wins at Uttoxeter and Bangor last summer. Peak fitness has to be taken on trust after 11 months off but he retains handicapping scope having been rated in the 130s earlier in his career. In excellent form last summer but has fitness to prove after 342-day layoff. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
5th (1) (18/1 -125%) Eritage |
18/1(-125%) | (1) Eritage 18/1, Struggled for this yard last summer but has returned in much better form, placing at Worcester and over C&D (2 lengths second to Thirtyfourstitches) in recent weeks. Should be thereabouts again. Back in the groove this summer, more recently when second over C&D a fortnight ago. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
6th (9) (2/1 +56%) Dicey Rielly |
2/1(+56%) | (9) Dicey Rielly 2/1, Thriving in 2023, making it 4 wins (3 chase, 1 hurdle) in his last 6 starts when seeing off 6 rivals over fences at Worcester 11 days ago. Another 5 lb higher back hurdling but it may not stop him in his current mood. Dual hurdle and dual chase winner from just six starts this year; may still be improving. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
7th (2) (9/1 -64%) Tommie Beau |
9/1(-64%) | (2) Tommie Beau 9/1, Arrives on the back of chase wins here and at Stratford in recent months. Completed a hat-trick when last seen over hurdles in spring 2021 and could make a bold bid for another back over the shorter obstacles. In good form as a staying chaser this year; first hurdle run since spring 2021. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
8th (7) (5/1 +33%) Merry Berry |
5/1(+33%) | (7) Merry Berry 5/1, Completed a 4-timer in 2021/22. May well have needed last month's Worcester reappearance after a year off and could make more of an impact now. Four-time hurdle winner; may have needed last month's low-key reappearance run. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
9th (10) (20/1 +9%) Caspers Court |
20/1(+9%) | (10) Caspers Court 20/1, Won handicap hurdles at Wincanton and Exeter at the start of the year. Given a break since a lesser run back at Wincanton in April. Won twice in February/March but ran poorly last time and needs a career best here. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
10th (5) (20/1 +0%) Go Chique |
20/1(+0%) | (5) Go Chique 20/1, Bumper winner who gained third hurdles victory back from a break at Bangor (23f, good) in September. Followed that with a solid second over 3m at Doncaster in November but he didn't run much of a race on his return to action 26 days ago. In good form last autumn but tailed off this month, after a break. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 2 race.
Tommie Beau reverts to timber following two comfortable victories over fences and commands attention, but MERRY BERRY is fancied to come on from her return to action at Worcester last month and gets the vote. She is now rated just 2lb above her last winning mark and seems to go well for Tom Broughton, who is back in the saddle. Dicey Rielly was successful at Worcester when sent chasing for her latest outing and can give the selection plenty to think about.
Like so many from the Peter Bowen stable DICEY RIELLY is thriving at present and might be able to defy the handicapper again. Recent C&D 1-2 Thirtyfourstitches and Eritage head the many dangers along with Tommie Beau, who returns to hurdles on the back of two chase wins.
Preference is for MERRY BERRY, who is on a good mark and may not have been suited by the switch to patient tactics last time.

Won sole start in point bumpers (Feb 26), so not a forlorn hope. Won a point bumper in February but the placed horses have done nothing for that form. |

12th (10) (25/1 -25%) Roczen |
25/1(-25%) | (10) Roczen 25/1, Geordieland gelding. Half-brother to a point winner. Dam, lightly raced in bumpers/over hurdles, sister to fairly useful hurdler/chaser (stayed 2½m) Hot Port. Wears hood. Makes little appeal on pedigree and yard is 1-20 in bumpers in recent years. |

13th (7) (150/1 -50%) Six Five Special |
150/1(-50%) | (7) Six Five Special 150/1, Showed little at Exeter 21 months ago and makes little appeal. Tailed off in a junior bumper in October 2021 and has been on the sidelines since. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 5 race.
A case can be made for several of these, but DONTMESSWITHME kept on to fill the runner-up spot over C&D on her racecourse bow and is taken to build on that. Only losing out to a more experienced rival on that occasion, the daughter of Court Cave can get the better of Alright Dai, who has joined the Neil Mulholland team since occupying the runner-up spot at Warwick in February. The unraced Full Monty is another to bear in mind.
FULL MONTY is with a shrewd stable and is related to a bumper winner, so he's worth chancing on debut, particularly if the market vibes are right. Dontmesswithme shaped well here on debut and merits respect and point-winner Ballela Blaze is worthy of respect.
It might be worth siding with Fergal O'Brien's striking newcomer FULL MONTY, who has plenty of bumper winners in his useful pedigree.
Ths is the racecard key.
