14:13 Newton Abbot Maiden Hurdle (Class 4) 17f Race Class Flow

The chart reads from right to left to today's class 4 race.

Having landed his maiden at Exeter in March, PIRATES' TALE found only an improver too strong at the same venue later in the month. Jimmy Frost's gelding must compete under a penalty today, but this is not the deepest of contests and he might be up to the task. Impecunious struck the woodwork at Stratford 11 days ago and he ought to hold every chance if handling conditions, while Lud'or, a runner-up on soft ground last June when trained in France, warrants closer inspection in the betting ahead of his stable debut.

LUD'OR ran to quite a useful level when runner-up at Auteuil last summer and is taken to make a winning start for new trainer Tom Symonds. Fortified Fortune shaped well when second at Warwick last month and is second choice ahead of Pirates' Tale, who shoulders a 7 lb penalty for his Exeter success.

An expensive recruit from the Irish point scene, FORTIFIED FORTUNE has plenty of scope to progress from last month's Warwick second.

14:43 Newton Abbot Handicap Chase (Class 4) 26f Race Class Flow

The chart reads from right to left to today's class 4 race.

FORTUNEFAVORSDBOLD has faced a couple of stiff tasks in class 2 company of late, but those two efforts have left Christian Williams' mare just 2lb above her last winning mark. The six-year-old remains open to improvement over the larger obstacles and may well be the answer now eased in grade. Lightonthewing and Puddlesinthepark score highly for their consistency and both are unlikely to be far away, although chasing debutant Danton is one to keep on eye on now tackling larger obstacles.

Provided his late tumble at Bangor last month hasn't left a mark, NO TACKLE is fancied to regain the winning thread stepping up to this sort of trip for the first time over fences. The main threat may emerge from Danton, who deserves credit for keeping the winner honest all the way to the line when runner-up at Chepstow recently and now heads over the larger obstacles. Puddlesinthepark can edge out Lightonthewing for third.

A case can be made for several but DANTON (nap) returned to form on his latest hurdle run and can make a winning chase debut.

15:13 Newton Abbot Handicap Hurdle (Class 4) 18f Race Class Flow

The chart reads from right to left to today's class 4 race.

A few of these arrive with something to prove and only a tentative vote can to go BASHFUL BOY. David Pipe's charge has often reserved his best form for the summer months so, from 2lb below his last winning mark, he could be primed to strike. Master Dancer is another that finds himself competitively treated and first-time cheekpieces could elicit some improvement. Songo heads the remainder.

There were better signs from MASTER DANCER when third at Huntingdon in March, before he was unable to employ his usual positive tactics at Fontwell last month. He is taken to bounce back to winning ways in first-time cheekpieces, with Songo feared most as he returns to this course on his stable debut. Clearance is the pick of the remainder.

All of these have something to prove but drying ground might enable BASHFUL BOY to bounce back to form and exploit a favourable mark.

15:43 Newton Abbot Handicap Chase (Class 4) 21f Race Class Flow

The chart reads from right to left to today's class 4 race.

A chance can be taken on OUT OF FOCUS, whose two chasing attempts have not been without promise. The son of Montmatre looked outpaced over an extended 2m3f at Ffos Las in April, so upped in trip and with stable jockey Adam Wedge back aboard, he could step forward. Duke Of Luckley was rewarded for his consistency when winning at Southwell last month and a 5lb rise does not look insurmountable, while Begin The Luck appeals most of the remainder.

EXMOOR FOREST shaped well in the face of an inadequate test when fourth on chasing debut and, back up in distance, he looks the one to side with. Time To Bite should be on the premises again and last-time-out winner Duke of Luckley is likely to go well again with a clear round of jumping.

Perhaps the answer will be OUT OF FOCUS who began his chasing career with two encouraging runs last month and tries a new trip.

16:13 Newton Abbot Handicap Hurdle (Class 5) 18f Race Class Flow

The chart reads from right to left to today's class 5 race.

WINTERWATCH was beaten six lengths into fourth when competing in this grade on his latest outing and he was dropped 1lb for that display. Harry Fry's six-year-old holds the most solid recent form in this contest and he just gets the vote. The main threat might be Lost In The Mist, who only found the favourite too good over 2m at Chepstow last month and he warrants a market check on his handicap bow. Of the remainder, Hour Star makes the most appeal.

This represents a good opportunity for WINTERWATCH to open his account over hurdles. The 6-y-o shaped as though this step back up in trip would be in his favour when fourth in a big field at Taunton and is appealing with a capable amateur booked and first-time cheekpieces enlisted. Handicap debutants Lost In The Mist and Hour Star appear the most likely to make a race of it with the selection, given that Light Em Up Nigel is returning from a 17-month absence.

It might pay to chance the fitness of long-absent topweight LIGHT EM UP NIGEL, who has been given a good chance by the handicapper.

16:43 Newton Abbot Hunter Chase (Class 5) 26f Race Class Flow

The chart reads from right to left to today's class 5 race.

Switch Hitter sets the standard with a rating of 130 in this contest and he has to be respected, but he has been pulled up the last twice which raises concerns. With that in mind, the vote goes to last year's winner YOUNG BUCK, who struck on his penultimate start between the flags and he can take this race for a second successive year. Len Brennan completes the shortlist.

SWITCH HITTER has to be the call on his first go in a hunter given he ran to useful ratings in a couple of Ascot handicaps to start last season. Last year's winner Young Buck is feared most.

It's hard to know what to expect from SWITCH HITTER but he'll be far too good for this field if back in good nick.

17:13 Newton Abbot NH Flat Race (Class 4) 17f Race Class Flow

The chart reads from right to left to today's class 4 race.

HURLEY GIRLY outran her big odds to reach the frame in a bumper on her debut at Plumpton last month and she would have learned a great deal from that experience. The daughter of Shirocco is likely to have plenty more to offer and she can strike for the in-form Neil Mulholland stable. Damekap finished second in a point-to-point in March before changing hands for 30,000 pounds and she would be foolish to dismiss on her debut under Rules, while any market confidence behind her stablemate, Springtime Legend, would also be interesting.

Those with Rules experience don't set the bar too high so RAILWAY BELL, who laid a solid foundations in British points and represents a successful yard, could be the answer. Realta Liath is sure to be thereabouts, with Damekap another to note.

Hurley Girly made a pleasing debut last month but REALTA LIATH held her own in a good race at Ascot in February and gets the nod.
