(5) Roger Henry 12/1, Had cheekpieces on and got back on the up switched to a handicap despite seeming to find the trip barely adequate when winning 10-runner event at Chelmsford (7f) just over 3 weeks ago. Sold from Jamie Osborne 14,500 gns after and he's respected on turf debut.
AW winner on handicap debut for Jamie Osborne last month; with new yard for turf debut.

(9) Powdering 11/4, Opened his account for the season at Wolverhampton in April and proved better than ever back on turf when bolting up at Beverley (7.4f, good) 11 days ago, doing well to come from the rear (made her move on what appeared the favoured part of the track). Respected under a 5 lb penalty.

14:23 Newmarket Handicap (Class 5) 7f Race Class Flow

The chart reads from right to left to today's class 5 race.

FREETODREAM posted two cosy victories over this distance prior to being thwarted in his hat-trick bid when third over a mile at Brighton, but stepping back in trip off an unchanged mark, he gets the vote to return to winning ways. Roger Henry was sporting cheekpieces for the first time (retained) when making his handicap debut a winning one at Chelmsford and he merits consideration for a new stable, although easy Beverley scorer Powdering rates as the main danger to the selection under a 5lb penalty.

FREETODREAM arrives in the form of his life, and with his effort at Bath last month easily excused, Amanda Perrett's 4-y-o is fancied to make it 3 wins from his last 4 starts at the expense of Powdering, who bolted up at Beverley 11 days ago and should be bang there under a penalty. Dakota Power is another last-time-out winner, and he can edge out One More Dream for third spot.

Michael Herrington's filly POWDERING (nap) looked in excellent nick when drawing clear to win readily at Beverley and gets the nod.

14:53 Newmarket Stakes (Class 4) 8f Race Class Flow

The chart reads from right to left to today's class 4 race.

Runner-up on his two starts to date, Creative Story warrants serious consideration in what should be an informative affair but he may have to fill the same position once more, this time behind T'CHALLA. Andrew Balding's charge shaped like a colt who was still learning his trade when second at Southwell and he can take a sizable step forward on his second start. Kilt performed with credit when looking unsuited by the way the race developed on his introduction over 7f at Newcastle in December and better can be expected here.

CREATIVE STORY was only just denied by a smart prospect in a similar event here last month and is fancied to go one better. T'challa made a promising start when second at Southwell and is feared most ahead of Usuario Amigo, who's worth another chance to confirm debut promise back on better ground.

T'Challa is respected but he'll need to improve to beat CREATIVE STORY, who sets a good standard on either of his seconds.

15:23 Newmarket Handicap (Class 3) 8f Race Class Flow

The chart reads from right to left to today's class 3 race.

It was a testament to his ability that LAUTREC was able to get off the mark when still not looking the finished article on his Newcastle debut. After then being turned over at short odds over 1m2f at Chelmsford earlier this month, he gets a tentative vote to return to winning ways now pitched into handicap company in first-time cheekpieces. Rocking Tree has notched up two victories from as many starts for the George Boughey stable and he warrants respect. Skukuza was last seen finishing second over C&D at the Guineas meeting here and he cannot be ignored.

SKUKUZA displayed improved form when runner-up in a well-run handicap over C&D a fortnight ago and a 2 lb rise shouldn't prevent a very bold bid to go one place better. If there's a big improver in the field it's surely Lautrec given his pedigree and he's feared most.

The well-bred SPUN TO GOLD is open to improvement on his second start of the season and gets the nod ahead of Rocking Tree.

15:53 Newmarket Stakes (Class 2) 6f Race Class Flow

The chart reads from right to left to today's class 2 race.

Eve Johnson Houghton appears to hold a strong hand with GOLD MEDALLIST and Forever My Prince, and preference is for the former. The son of Acclamation was only narrowly denied on heavy ground at Goodwood a fortnight ago and he can put that experience to good use, with the forecast quicker surface unlikely to be a problem. Foro Romano should be thereabouts following a decent second at Yarmouth, while market support for Alondra, whose sire has enjoyed a fine beginning to his stallion career, would be noteworthy.

GOLD MEDALLIST sets the standard on Goodwood debut second, with more to come, and he can top the podium at the second time of asking. Marbush is the most interesting debutant, and the selection's stable companion Forever My Prince should step forward from his debut.

This could revolve around Eve Johnson Houghton's runners in Forever My Prince and GOLD MEDALLIST, with preference for the latter.

16:25 Newmarket Handicap (Class 3) 12f Race Class Flow

The chart reads from right to left to today's class 3 race.

Front runners have enjoyed success on the Rowley Mile so far this season so VAYNOR gets the nod. Charles Hills' gelding shaped as if in need of the outing when sixth at Epsom, but a 1lb ease in the handicap means he is now back on his last winning mark and it would come as no surprise were he to step forward. Better can be expected of Composite, who failed to justify favouritism on his handicap debut. Iron Lion bolted up at Doncaster and must be taken seriously, despite a subsequent 8lb hike.

There's a chance COMPOSITE just needed it after a break at Windsor last time and this low-mileage 4-y-o can get back on the up now. Iron Lion rates an obvious threat on the back of his ready Doncaster success, while the returning Fox Journey also merits respect having scored on his course reappearance at this time last year.

Preference is for IRON LION, who resumed his progress with an emphatic win at Doncaster and still looks feasibly treated.

(6) Unico 10/1, Back on turf, found some improvement as she doubled her tally with success at Yarmouth (6f) last month, impressing with how she travelled through the race. Can remain competitive back up 3 lb in the weights.

16:55 Newmarket Handicap (Class 5) 6f Race Class Flow

The chart reads from right to left to today's class 5 race.

It's hard to know exactly what Divine Breath achieved when winning at prohibitive odds at Wolverhampton in February, but she makes her handicap debut from a potentially workable mark and must be considered. That said, it is FENLANDER who gets the vote. Better was expected of Pam Sly's charge last time, though he didn't appear to handle Ripon all too well and could repay his supporters. Recent Musselburgh scorer Giorgio M remains of interest, while Want Want is another to consider.

DEVINE BREATH is bred to be useful and confirmed the promise of her debut when successful at Wolverhampton in February, despite still looking in need of the experience. She is taken to follow up with progress to come as she goes handicapping, though Giorgio M can remain competitive after getting off the mark on his latest outing. Mart could also be in the mix.

Open to improvement, DIVINE BREATH looks on a fair mark for her turf/handicap debut. Fenlander should do better too.
