1st (1) (11/1 -214%) Rory The Cat |
11/1(-214%) | (1) Rory The Cat 11/1, Won pair of handicaps on the level this summer. Remote sixth to Union Flag on his C&D hurdle debut in November but different proposition when winning a 5-runner event back here 3 weeks later. The form is nothing special, though, so he'll require another chunk of improvement to follow up. Scored over C&D last time with usual blinkers reapplied; enters calculations. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
2nd (4) (11/2 +39%) Churchwarden |
11/2(+39%) | (4) Churchwarden 11/2, Showed fair form on second of 2 starts in maidens on Flat for Eddie & Patrick Harty. New trainer John McConnell has won this 3 times since 2019, including with a hurdle newcomer. Market confidence could prove significant. New trainer has a good record in this race; interesting hurdles debutant. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
3rd (3) (6/1 -118%) Union Flag |
6/1(-118%) | (3) Union Flag 6/1, Fair maiden on the Flat who built on his hurdling debut promise for Noel Meade when ready winner of 9-runner C&D juvenile in November. Perhaps found the run coming too soon when only a remote fourth at Catterick 16 days later. Can bounce back. Disappointing last time but won over C&D (stable debut) earlier in November. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
4th (2) (4/9 +56%) Teorie |
4/9(+56%) | (2) Teorie 4/9, Fairly useful winner on the Flat in Ireland for Jim Bolger. Didn't look a natural in the jumping department but still ran out a ready winner on his recent Catterick hurdle debut (2m, good to soft). The cheekpieces he wore on the Flat go on now. Leading claims. Top on Irish Flat form; scored by wide margin at Catterick for new yard; respected. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
5th (5) (66/1 -230%) La Quarite |
66/1(-230%) | (5) La Quarite 66/1, Hasn't shown enough in his 2 starts to suggest he's likely to play a leading role here. Needs to show improvement. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|PU| (6) (200/1 -203%) Apples Destiny |
200/1(-203%) | (6) Apples Destiny 200/1, Tailed off in an Aintree bumper in November. Can only be watched. Unpromising debut in Aintree bumper. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 4 race.
TEORIE had plenty in hand when landing the odds on his hurdling debut at Catterick a couple of weeks ago and Fergal O'Brien's gelding is hard to oppose on the back of that performance. Churchwarden showed some ability in a short Flat career last year and he should not be discounted as a result. Union Flag and Rory The Cat are the pick of the remainder.
TEORIE overcame a few indifferent leaps to make a winning start over hurdles at Catterick 13 days ago and is taken to follow up. Union Flag will give him something to think about if back to the form he showed when winning over C&D, while a market move for Churchwarden would be very interesting given John McConnell's excellent recent record in this race.
The vote goes to TEORIE, who should build on his Catterick win. Churchwarden is second choice.

---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
1st (2) (7/2 +42%) Benson |
7/2(+42%) | (2) Benson 7/2, Useful handicap hurdler who deservedly opened account for present yard here in January and followed up in Morebattle Hurdle at Kelso 2 months later. Not at best both starts this season (chasing debut first occasion), however. Easily made all in this 12 months ago and he's a major player if rediscovering that form. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
2nd (6) (9/2 +68%) Holmes St Georges |
9/2(+68%) | (6) Holmes St Georges 9/2, Fairly useful hurdler who opened his account here over a year ago. Mostly creditable efforts since and likely needed run at Aintree on return. Not discounted. Tailed off at Aintree last month but may have needed the run; progressive earlier in 2023. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
3rd (4) (4/1 -14%) Afadil |
4/1(-14%) | (4) Afadil 4/1, Showed himself to be well handicapped when comfortably seeing off 14 rivals at the Ayr Scottish National meeting in April. Back on track when third at Taunton last time and should be involved again. Won Listed 4yo hurdle here last February and he's one to consider for top trainer. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
4th (7) (5/2 +0%) In This World |
5/2(+0%) | (7) In This World 5/2, Looked promising when winning on Flat and over hurdles in 2021 and, while he's been very lightly raced since, there were signs of encouragement in his fifth at Cheltenham recently. This isn't as strong and he's worthy of consideration. Stayed on for 5th over 2m1f at Cheltenham last time; this trip could be just what he needs. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
5th (3) (10/1 -122%) Clear White Light |
10/1(-122%) | (3) Clear White Light 10/1, Went the right way in handicaps for current yard last term, winning twice at around 2½m. Successful return at Doncaster and latest effort at the same course is best excused, so not without hope. Leaders didn't come back over 2m at Doncaster latest; step back up in trip could be ideal. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
6th (5) (8/1 -129%) Matchless |
8/1(-129%) | (5) Matchless 8/1, Improved when winning 9-runner handicap hurdle here (15.6f, good to soft, 11/2) last month and only just denied in messy contest at Doncaster (19.4f) next time. Should go well again. Improving hurdler who has posted a win (here) and a near-miss from his last two starts. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|PU| (1) (33/1 -106%) Lunar Power |
33/1(-106%) | (1) Lunar Power 33/1, Posted a career-best effort (in blinkers) when successful over hurdles at Ballinrobe (22.4f) in May. Shaped better than distance beaten suggests when eighth of 10 on his recent yard debut at Haydock (18.9f) and his mark has eased ahead of this. Two-time hurdle winner in Ireland but well beaten on stable debut at Haydock in November. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 2 race.
BENSON won this race 12 months ago off an 8lb lower mark, but the nine-year-old is only 2lb higher than when winning the Morebattle at Kelso in March. With that in mind, he gets the vote ahead of the consistent Matchless, who was denied by the narrowest of margins on his most recent outing at Doncaster. In This World edges out Afadil to be best of the rest.
MATCHLESS is in top form and, having just been denied at Doncaster last month, he's worth a chance to resume winning ways at the possible expense of Afadil, who is a rare runner at this track for his top stable. In This World is another one to consider.
Paul Nicholls has an excellent record at Musselburgh and AFADIL, who won a Listed 4yo hurdle here last February, gets the nod.

Caithness |
(1) (6/1 +25%)6/1(+25%) | (1) Caithness 6/1, Comfortable all-the-way winner of 2m maiden/handicap hurdles at Kelso (good to firm/heavy) this autumn and fine effort in good Cheltenham novice handicap last time, unable to get the winner in trouble but having almost all the others on the stretch before the last. Up another 5 lb but can do better. Solid record this term, making all twice at Kelso then good third at Cheltenham. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
1st (11) (16/1 +20%) Scots Poet |
16/1(+20%) | (11) Scots Poet 16/1, Another who goes well here, winning C&D handicap in February and a good second in November. In touch when slipping up between last 2 in race won by Cuban Cigar here 32 days ago and remains in form, although this is much tougher. Consistent sort who has won over C&D and should give his running. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
2nd (7) (17/2 +29%) Ballygeary |
17/2(+29%) | (7) Ballygeary 17/2, Has made a very positive start to his hurdles career, his only 2 defeats coming in hot Cheltenham handicaps (albeit ran well on return). Took a match last time and likely type down in trip. 1 of 2 runners for yard that won this in 2021 and 2023. Back in deeper waters but has good strike-rates (4-6 over hurdles; 2-3 at 2m). |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
3rd (10) (25/1 -79%) Belle Of Annandale |
25/1(-79%) | (10) Belle Of Annandale 25/1, Has done well switched to hurdles for new yard, winning 2m Perth maiden and C&D novice. Struggled in a listed race last time but handicaps will be more suitable. Visor goes on. 2-4 over hurdles, including C&D win; possibilities back here in first-time visor. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
4th (5) (9/2 -80%) Park Annonciade |
9/2(-80%) | (5) Park Annonciade 9/2, Improving in chunks in handicap hurdles, value for nearer double the winning margin as he followed up his Ayr success in valuable Class 2 event at Haydock (18.9f) under this rider 5 weeks ago. Up 6 lb and good shout in hat-trick bid. Haydock win took his record in handicaps to 2-3; progressing well; has to be feared. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
5th (12) (22/1 +12%) Cancan |
22/1(+12%) | (12) Cancan 22/1, Landed 2m mares' novice hurdle at Ayr in November 2021 and proved she retains all of her ability on second start back after an absence when second in Class 5 mares' handicap over C&D a fortnight ago. Much more needed in this. Signs of retaining ability here last time but now goes up two grades. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
6th (6) (33/1 -175%) Slugger |
33/1(-175%) | (6) Slugger 33/1, Made a winning start over hurdles despite racing freely in 2m novice at Kelso on return in October and ran well behind Belle of Annandale here 8 weeks ago, mistakes late and fading. More needed now handicapping in first-time tongue tie. Refitted hood possibly contributed to C&D defeat last time; still unexposed. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
7th (8) (10/3 +0%) Panjari |
10/3(+0%) | (8) Panjari 10/3, Useful on Flat in Germany and has been very quick in getting the hang of hurdling, winning extended 2m Taunton novice and running well from a good prominent position in Cheltenham handicap a fortnight ago. Headgear left off this time. Respected. Progressive in hood; big player, provided removal of headgear doesn't backfire. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
8th (4) (16/1 +0%) Collingham |
16/1(+0%) | (4) Collingham 16/1, Enjoyed a good campaign last term, winning handicaps at Wetherby and over C&D and second in this race (last two under this rider). Promising return at this track and while not so great at Doncaster next time he'll likely be much closer to form back here in re-fitted headgear. 1 of 2 for yard. Has a respectable record at Musselburgh; runner-up in this race last year. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
9th (9) (18/1 -80%) Cuban Cigar |
18/1(-80%) | (9) Cuban Cigar 18/1, Enhanced a pretty good record around here with a first success of the season in C&D handicap 32 days ago under this rider. Needs more off a career-high mark now but that form has been franked. Fourth in this race last year; won narrowly over C&D on latest outing. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
10th (2) (7/2 +36%) Williethebuilder |
7/2(+36%) | (2) Williethebuilder 7/2, Has done well over hurdles for new yard this term, winning at Uttoxeter (2m) before good runs in Grade 2 and competitive handicap hurdle at Cheltenham (faded, Panjari third). This is a bit easier and he remains unexposed. Ties in closely with Panjari on latest effort; remains open to further progress. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
11th (3) (22/1 -57%) Carcaci Castle |
22/1(-57%) | (3) Carcaci Castle 22/1, Looked a useful prospect when landing 2m maiden/novice hurdles at Kelso for new yard a year ago but has failed to complete both starts since 8 months apart (Grade 2 first occasion), dropping away approaching 3 out and pulled up in handicap at Carlisle on return. Back down in trip. Could well resume his progress back down in trip, being 3-3 over 2m/2m1f. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 3 race.
PANJARI was third in a competitive event on his handicap debut at Cheltenham recently and Paul Nicholls' unexposed gelding can return to winning ways here. That said, Williethebuilder was not far behind the selection on that occasion and looks a big danger. The hat-trick seeking Park Annonciade is another with strong form claims, while Caithness and Belle Of Annandale complete the shortlist.
A hot renewal of this traditional New Year's Day handicap with PARK ANNONCIADE taken to get the hat-trick up. He was value for nearer double the winning margin when taking a good contest at Haydock on Betfair Chase Day and can go on improving. There is more to come from Caithness and he's feared, while Donald McCain, who has won 2 of the last 3 runnings of this, saddles an interesting pair in Collingham (second last year) and Ballygeary.
Judged on his latest effort, this sharper test is likely to suit WILLIETHEBUILDER. Second choice is Park Annonciade.

1st (1) (9/2 +63%) Fidelio Vallis |
9/2(+63%) | (1) Fidelio Vallis 9/2, Useful for Paul Nicholls in 2021 and he ran well on back of 9 months off when runner-up here (15.8f) in November. Not in quite the same form when fourth at Ascot (21f) later that month but no surprise to see a better showing now. Consistent efforts, including twice here, for new yard; now 3lb below last winning mark. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
2nd (2) (15/2 +6%) Corrigeen Rock |
15/2(+6%) | (2) Corrigeen Rock 15/2, Took another step forward when making winning return from 6 months off at Kempton (18f) in October and creditable effort when fourth in stronger company at Ascot (16.7f) since. Mark demands that bit more but he's another unexposed at this sort of trip. Largely progressive but he's held by Frere D'Armes on latest effort; unproven at 2m4f. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
3rd (7) (11/2 +8%) Half Shot |
11/2(+8%) | (7) Half Shot 11/2, Dual winner last term who has often run well at this venue, seen to good effect from the front when adding to his tally over extended 23f trip 32 days ago. Still, he arrives here better than ever and not discounted for all this rates tougher. Creditable third in this contest 12 months ago; won by 7l at this venue last time. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
4th (9) (14/1 -300%) Cracking Destiny |
14/1(-300%) | (9) Cracking Destiny 14/1, Well served by test of speed when capitalising on reduced mark here (15.8f) 54 days ago, by 4¾ lengths from Fidelio Vallis. 5 lb rise makes things tougher but expected to give another good account. Comfortably beat Fidelio Vallis here two months ago; went close in this event in 2020. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
5th (6) (10/1 -43%) Before Midnight |
10/1(-43%) | (6) Before Midnight 10/1, Ridden more handily than previously this term and best effort yet for new yard when third of 6 in handicap chase at Kempton (20.5f) 5 weeks ago. Losing run is mounting up but afforded a chance by the assessor. Well treated on best form, albeit he's an 11yo whose losing spell goes back to 2021. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
6th (3) (10/1 -25%) Bass Rock |
10/1(-25%) | (3) Bass Rock 10/1, Successful 3 times over hurdles and bright start over fences last winter, winning Carlisle novice (2m) prior to good second at Wetherby. Disappointed thereafter though and low-key return to action at First-named venue 2 months ago. Lines up here with yard in better form at least. Disappointing in last three races; possibilities off this mark provided he's back on song. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|F| (8) (25/1 -79%) Cedar Hill |
25/1(-79%) | (8) Cedar Hill 25/1, Landed small field handicaps at Perth/Kelso during the summer and again ran well when chasing home Tommy's Oscar at latter-named venue in October. Reportedly bled when last of 5 here (15.8f) in November Best to forgive latest effort; performed poorly (well-held fifth) in this race last year. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|PU| (4) (2/1 +20%) Frere D'armes |
2/1(+20%) | (4) Frere D'armes 2/1, Did well over hurdles and improved for switch to chasing, landing handicaps at Kempton/Newbury last winter. Competitive from revised mark subsequently, finishing a solid second despite a late mistake in class 2 Ascot handicap (16.7f) 37 days ago. Unexposed at this sort of trip and sound claims. Finished strongly over 2m1f at Ascot last time; looks ready for a crack at this new trip. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|PU| (5) (12/1 +40%) Cooper's Cross |
12/1(+40%) | (5) Cooper's Cross 12/1, Dual winner last term who ended the season with an excellent second in Scottish National at Ayr. Presumably needed the outing when eighth in Grand Sefton (21f) at Aintree in November and testing ground probably against him in the Tommy Whittle at Haydock 9 days ago. Creditable second in this race last year; has the ability to take a serious hand. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 2 race.
CRACKING DESTINY took care of Fidelio Vallis by just under five lengths over 2m here in November and although 6lb worse off, that is unlikely to be enough to prevent the veteran from going in again. Fidelio Vallis could get closer, especially if allowed an uncontested lead, while Half Shot did it nicely over an extended 2m7f here and it would be no surprise to see him get into contention off a 7lb higher mark.
FRERE D'ARMES stepped up plenty on his reappearance run and likely would have proved even more of a threat without a mistake 3 out when finishing runner-up at Ascot 37 days ago. Unexposed at this sort of trip, he can confirm himself on a handy mark. Fidelio Vallis and Half Shot head up the dangers, whilst it would come as no surprise to see a better showing from Cooper's Cross.
With the new trip well worth exploring, FRERE D'ARMES (nap) can build on his latest effort. Fidelio Vallis is second choice.

1st (1) (5/1 +29%) Indian Louis |
5/1(+29%) | (1) Indian Louis 5/1, Dual point winner who has shaped like a stayer on all 3 starts over hurdles. Heads over the larger obstacles and looks just the type to do better in handicaps now stepping up in trip. Interesting. Dual point winner who is open to plenty of improvement on chase/handicap debut. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
2nd (9) (16/1 +52%) Divas Doyen |
16/1(+52%) | (9) Divas Doyen 16/1, Poor maiden hurdler/chaser who was pulled up at Sedgefield on return, leaving her with something to prove. Went close over C&D last March but remains an inconsistent maiden. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
3rd (6) (10/3 -11%) Baron Briggs |
10/3(-11%) | (6) Baron Briggs 10/3, Placed in a point and lightly raced under Rules. Made an encouraging return (had wind op in interim) on just his second start over fences when third at Kelso in October (made effort shade earlier than ideal) so he's one to be interested in with that under his belt. Lightly raced; bred to be suited by this step back up in distance; open to progress. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
4th (2) (11/2 +61%) Breakdance Kid |
11/2(+61%) | (2) Breakdance Kid 11/2, Unpromising in points but back on track on second outing for this yard when fifth of 13 in handicap at Kelso (20.9f, heavy) in November. Switches over the larger obstacles and as is often the case with this yard, the market should guide expectations. Has possibilities, provided he shows progress for the switch to chasing. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
5th (4) (7/2 -100%) Euchan Falls |
7/2(-100%) | (4) Euchan Falls 7/2, Dual winner at 20f over hurdles who made an encouraging start over fences when fourth in handicap over C&D in November. Took a step forward from just out of the weights when runner-up at Ayr (20.5f, soft) a month later and there's every chance he can go one better. Has performed well at this course and Ayr since switched to fences; major contender. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
6th (5) (4/1 -20%) Dr Shirocco |
4/1(-20%) | (5) Dr Shirocco 4/1, Finally off the mark under Rules when scoring at Hexham in June before making light of a 5-month absence to follow up at this C&D (good to soft) just under 8 weeks ago. Should go close again from 3 lb higher mark. Won at Hexham in June and this track in November; second in this race last year. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|PU| (8) (11/1 +56%) Get 'Em In |
11/1(+56%) | (8) Get 'Em In 11/1, Showed little over hurdles and similar story over fences to date. Set for another struggle from marginally out of the weights. The drop back in grade looks suitable but he's far from solid on overall form. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|PU| (3) (50/1 -257%) Marajman |
50/1(-257%) | (3) Marajman 50/1, Dual chase winner for Charles & Adam Pogson in summer but no impact on all 3 starts in recent weeks. Now below last winning mark but can only be watched. Two chase wins for previous yard; badly out of form for new stable. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 5 race.
DR SHIROCCO is seeking a hat-trick after just getting up by a neck over C&D in November and he may have been let off lightly to only be raised 3lb. He is taken to go in again, although Baron Briggs ran well enough to finish third at Kelso after undergoing wind surgery and could take another step forward off a 1lb lower rating. Euchan Falls completes the shortlist.
A few in with a squeak but EUCHAN FALLS improved on his chasing debut effort when finishing runner-up at Ayr 3 weeks ago, and with better still to come, he's fancied to come out on top at the expense of Baron Briggs, who paid the price for trying first to close down the front runner at Kelso a couple of months ago. Dr Shirocco and Indian Louis are another couple of interesting contenders, also.
Lightly raced BARON BRIGGS is taken to show progress and get off the mark. Dr Shirocco is second choice.

1st (2) (5/4 +64%) Republican |
5/4(+64%) | (2) Republican 5/4, Ended a long losing run at Hereford in February and signed off with a solid fourth at Ffos Las (2m4f) on his final run for Oliver Sherwood in April. Interesting on his return with yard among the winners. Makes stable/seasonal debut with yard in fine form; interesting, especially if well backed. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
2nd (1) (7/2 +13%) Call Me Harry |
7/2(+13%) | (1) Call Me Harry 7/2, C&D winner in November who had yet to be asked for effort when swerved and unseated 2 out.in handicap hurdle at Aintree (24.7f, heavy) 23 days ago. Enters calculations off the same mark. C&D win in November; bang there when jinking/unseating at Aintree latest; strong contender. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
3rd (7) (11/1 -57%) Kiss My Face |
11/1(-57%) | (7) Kiss My Face 11/1, Winning hurdler at Catterick when last seen in this sphere in February and arrives in good nick from a spell on the AW Flat. Needs considering. Won in February on last hurdle outing; fit from the Flat and could have a part to play. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
4th (3) (14/1 -17%) Telhimlisten |
14/1(-17%) | (3) Telhimlisten 14/1, Scored 4 times over hurdles and also an easy winner of 3-runner race on first completed chase start at Plumpton in April for Jennie Candlish. Yet to hit top form in three runs for his new yard though, never-dangerous fifth of 7 in handicap chase at Ayr (24.1f, soft) 21 days ago. More needed. Prolific last March/April but plenty to prove regarding stamina and current form. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
5th (8) (15/2 +38%) Theirshegoes |
15/2(+38%) | (8) Theirshegoes 15/2, Still to get her head in front but she comes here in decent nick, fifth of 11 to Sanosuke in handicap hurdle over C&D (soft) 32 days ago. Solid claims once more. Merely fifth on her two runs this autumn but there's a suspicion she's capable of better. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
6th (5) (14/1 -409%) Reserve Judgement |
14/1(-409%) | (5) Reserve Judgement 14/1, Winner at Down Royal in June and in the process of running well when unseated rider 3 out in handicap hurdle there (24.1f, soft) 52 days ago. This irish challenger is one to consider. Going well in front when falling three out at Down Royal; may well make amends today. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
7th (4) (13/2 -8%) Aurora Thunder |
13/2(-8%) | (4) Aurora Thunder 13/2, Course winner who posted a respectable third of 11 in handicap hurdle at Ayr (20.4f, soft) 21 days ago. It's now 12 runs since her last win in 2022, though. Step back in right direction when third at Ayr latest; has a chance now back down in grade. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 4 race.
KISS MY FACE was last seen in this sphere when successful at Catterick in February last year and he now has to compete off a 4lb higher rating. He has paid his way on the Flat since and can make a winning return to hurdles. Republican is an interesting contender on his first start for the Harry Derham stable and has proven to be more than capable in this sort of grade. Sanosuke makes some appeal in a first-time visor.
A case can be made for virtually all of these but REPUBLICAN hails from a yard among the winners so is taken to go in at the first time of asking for his new handler and edge out in-form top-weight Call Me Harry. Theirshegoes and Aurora Thunder are both weighted to have a say too in a competitive handicap.
Irish challenger RESERVE JUDGEMENT was going well in front when falling three out at Down Royal in November and holds appealing claims.
Ths is the racecard key.
