Double Oban

1.1
11/10(+20%)
(1) Double Oban 11/10, Fair on the Flat for Hugo Palmer and having made the frame in pair of novice hurdle runs for new yard, he improved further to open his account in 7-runner handicap at Uttoxeter (15.7f) in July. Ran a cracker on return when second at Wetherby on Boxing Day and should go well again.
Record of 4312 over hurdles and he's open to more progress in this sphere; key player.

Gms Prince

11
11/1(-10%)
(6) Gms Prince 11/1, Still looking for first success and is potentially well treated now but fared no better than previously this season when a well-beaten third at Fontwell (21.8f, good) a couple of months ago. Tongue tie back on and drops back in trip.
Placed at Fontwell (2m5f) latest but was beaten 18l and is now 0-15; down the list.

7/2(+50%)
(5) Quian 7/2, Took a step back in the right direction when third at Ludlow in November and probably ran to a similar level when filling that same position at Musselburgh (19.8f, good to soft) last month. Has since left Fergal O'Brien and had a breathing operation.
Third in last two hurdle runs and he's respected on stable debut; has had wind surgery.
2
5th (2) Magnetic North (33/1 -560%)
Magnetic North

33
33/1(-560%)
(2) Magnetic North 33/1, Bagged back-to-back claimers on the Flat in Ireland during the summer but hasn't made much of an impact in 4 runs on the Flat for this yard. However, he justified support from 10 lb out of the weights in a very weak race over C&D on Boxing Day and others more appealing given his profile.
Won from out of the weights over C&D on Boxing Day; 5lb lower here and he's not ruled out.
4
6th (4) Just Four Fame (18/1 +55%)
Just Four Fame

18
18/1(+55%)
(4) Just Four Fame 18/1, Third in an Aintree bumper in May 2022 but hurdling efforts have been uninspiring in the main, faring no better in handicaps, latest when eleventh of 15 at Taunton (23.9f, good, 100/1) just over 5 weeks ago. Significantly back down in trip and a first-time visor replaces the cheekpieces.
Still lightly raced and now takes a big drop back in trip but he needs a transformation.
3

Lahire

5
5/1(-25%)
(3) Lahire 5/1, Down in the weights and set to produced most encouraging effort yet in handicaps when falling late at Sedgefield in November. Probably worth marking up for lasting as long as he did under an aggressive ride when fourth at Wetherby last time but typically found the hurdles getting in his way.
Wasn't far behind Double Oban at Wetherby and has claims if he can find something extra.
7
|PU| (7) Lustleigh (9/1 +36%)
Lustleigh

9
9/1(+36%)
(7) Lustleigh 9/1, Showed more than first time up over fences when second in a handicap at Ludlow (16f) in February but failed to build on that on both subsequent starts and his overall profile is a little off-putting. Back hurdling after 9 months off for a new yard (sold for £6,500) and a watching brief is advised.
Eight-race maiden and has something to prove back over hurdles for new yard; equipment on.

11:45 Market Rasen Handicap Hurdle (Class 5) 17f Race Class Flow

The chart reads from right to left to today's class 5 race.

DOUBLE OBAN ran with plenty of credit when returning from a break to fill the runner-up spot at Wetherby on Boxing Day and the five-year-old appears capable of further improvement on just his third start in handicap company. Lahire finished behind the selection on that occasion and is likely to be competitive, while recent C&D winner Magnetic North completes the shortlist.

Plenty of these have questions to answer but DOUBLE OBAN ran a cracker on return from 6 months off when finding just one too strong at Wetherby on Boxing Day, so he's fancied to regain the winning thread at the expense of Lahire, who did too much up front when finishing a couple of places behind the selection last time. Gms Prince can edge out recent C&D winner Magnetic North for third.

This can go to DOUBLE OBAN, who was a good second at Wetherby on Boxing Day and is open to more progress in this sphere.

(1) Fingle Bridge 2/5, Useful bumper scorer in 2022 who made light of a two-year absence when easily landing the odds in 2m novice at Uttoxeter on his hurdles bow 38 days ago. Has plenty of scope to improve and has excellent claims of defying a penalty at the first time of asking.
Readily won run-of-the-mill maiden on hurdle debut, and looks a good prospect.

Made all to score by over 6l at Carlisle last month; ought to be a tough nut to crack.

12:15 Market Rasen Maiden Hurdle (Class 4) 19f Race Class Flow

The chart reads from right to left to today's class 4 race.

FINGLE BRIDGE made a successful reappearance over hurdles at Uttoxeter having not seen the racecourse for almost two years. The son of Flemensfirth had created a decent impression when landing a Chepstow bumper in December 2022 and stepping up in trip is unlikely to inconvenience him. Wellington Arch is going the right way in this sphere and appears to be the main threat after his Carlisle success, while better is expected from Dark Mix.

FINGLE BRIDGE and Wellington Arch look the pair to focus on. The former brushed off a 2-year absence when justifying substantial support in impressive fashion on his Uttoxeter hurdling debut just over 5 weeks ago and is narrowly preferred with significant improvement on the cards.

This will probably be fought out by FINGLE BRIDGE and Wellington Arch, who were both convincing winners when last in action.

Placed off 2lb higher over hurdles in November but last month's chase debut was poor.

Unable to lay a glove on Orbys River when third at Ayr but still considered each-way.

Drops markedly in trip and sports new headgear combination on stable debut; interesting.

However, pulled up both subsequent outings, weakening from 3 out on latest outing at Leicester 7 weeks ago. Cheekpieces back on.

12:50 Market Rasen Handicap Chase (Class 5) 17f Race Class Flow

The chart reads from right to left to today's class 5 race.

ORBYS RIVER left behind her chase debut effort at Bangor when scoring at Ayr recently and a similar performance on this occasion would make her tough to beat, even with a 7lb penalty to shoulder. My Portia ran well on her return to the larger obstacles at Leicester and is respected along with Amarillobymorning, who boasts an interesting jockey booking in Charlie Deutsch.

MY PORTIA looked an improved model on the back of a 6-month break when chasing home a next-time-out winner at Leicester 6 weeks ago and she could be worth chancing to confirm the promise of that run, operating from her correct mark. Last-time-out winners Orbys River and J'habite En France can also get involved if arriving in the same form. Amarillobymorning needs monitoring in the betting for clues now sent chasing from a basement mark.

A chance is taken on STONY MAN, who drops markedly in trip and sports new headgear on his debut for his up-and-coming new trainer.

Beaten only by a well-handicapped one at Ascot since and of strong interest dipping into veterans company for the first time.
Won first two races this season and bumped into bang-in-form rival when second last time.

Has modest strike-rate over fences but is largely consistent; ought to be on the premises.

(6) Anglers Crag 17/2, Big improver for this stable after wind surgery, making it 4-4 when overcoming mistakes to edge ahead close home in Eider at Newcastle. However, was pulled up in the Scottish National on final run of last season and reappearance effort was pretty low-key. Likely to find this trip too sharp.
Did very well for Brian Ellison last season but arrives here with something to prove.

(1) Jetoile 12/1, Won a trio of handicap chases in 2023, notably the Old Roan at Aintree. Matched that form when fourth at Punchestown in May but hard to draw many positives from both comeback outings this autumn. Down in class now and headgear applied back from a break.
Looked out of sorts on both autumn outings; needs to be perked up by new cheekpieces.

(2) Paint The Dream 22/1, Three of his four wins over fences for Fergal O'Brien were gained at Newbury, including a Grade 3 handicap back in March 2022. Shaped as if retaining plenty of ability after almost 2 years off at Cheltenham but failed to come on for that at Chepstow 3 weeks ago.

(4) Numitor 13/2, Enhanced healthy strike rate over fences with a tidy success on return at Wincanton and as good as ever when defying a 3 lb rise at Cheltenham last month. That was his third straight win in a veterans event so he must be respected.

LTO Selection:hiden content, hiden content, hiden content, hiden content

13:25 Market Rasen Handicap Chase (Class 2) 21f Race Class Flow

The chart reads from right to left to today's class 2 race.

Numitor has already won a couple of these veterans' series events and is dangerous to rule out on a hat-trick, with a 4lb rise for his latest success at Cheltenham noted as a fair assessment. However, previous course winner GRANDADS COTTAGE bounced back to form with a 10-length triumph at Carlisle last month and looks capable of backing that up off 6lb higher. Nocte Volatus and Onemorefortheroad are the pick of the remainder.

The thriving NOCTE VOLATUS is fancied to resume winning ways tackling a veterans event for the first time. Numitor has an excellent record in these events so has to be feared, while Jetoile makes each-way appeal at bigger odds down in class.

This looks good for NOCTE VOLATUS (nap), who got his career back on track with two wins last year and ran well in defeat last time.

7/1(-56%)
(4) Caher Roes Den 7/1, Irish point winner who took his form up a notch after 8 months off when third of 11 on handicap debut at Wincanton (24.7f, good) in October, pulling clear of rest and shaping as though he'll have no trouble landing a race from this sort of mark. Cheekpieces on and should be in the mix again.
Encouraging third on his handicap and seasonal debut and he's open to improvement.

14:00 Market Rasen Handicap Hurdle (Class 4) 23f Race Class Flow

The chart reads from right to left to today's class 4 race.

ITHAKA won over this C&D at the start of December and, having also scored with a determined effort at Uttoxeter most recently, there are good reasons to expect another bold showing. Another Lord returned from a break with a close-up second over 2m6f at Uttoxeter last month and should also have more to offer off 4lb higher. Belvedere Blast and the unexposed Caher Roes Den complete the shortlist.

ANOTHER LORD's latest effort was an eye-catching one, a fast-finishing third following a 10-month absence, and he's entitled to build on that run and can land the spoils here. The lightly-raced Caher Roes Den shaped well on handicap debut and rates a serious danger, while course-winner Stay If U Want To is not ruled out on his first try at this trip.

The step up in trip could be ideal for STAY IF U WANT TO and he is taken to post his first handicap win on this drop back in grade.

14:35 Market Rasen Handicap Chase (Class 2) 24f Race Class Flow

The chart reads from right to left to today's class 2 race.

COPPERHEAD has found a new lease of life in the veterans' division this season and he gets the nod to return to winning ways. Joe Tizzard's classy operator went down narrowly over an inadequate trip at Cheltenham last month and, stepping back up in distance off 2lb higher, he could prove tough to stop. Sam Brown has been plying his trade in some hot races of late and he commands respect in this company, while Remastered and Fortescue are also noted as each-way players.

Joe Tizzard has revitalised COPPERHEAD and Eldorado Allen recently and this pair of classy types could be the ones to fight this out, with the former marginally preferred. Empire Steel is reliable at this level, so he's considered a player, too.

Copperhead has found his old steel in a major change of fortunes but ELDORADO ALLEN shaped well behind him last time.

15:10 Market Rasen NH Flat Race (Class 1) 17f Race Class Flow

The chart reads from right to left to today's class 1 race.

Fergal O'Brien landed this prize with the smart Dysart Enos in 2023 and he will be hoping Dream Shadow is of a similar ilk. She created a favourable impression when winning at the second time of asking under Rules in a Uttoxeter bumper in October and, with the promise of more to come, she must be respected. That said, GETAWHISKY is narrowly preferred. She scored in the style of a potentially smart mare when coming from well off the pace to land the spoils over 2m1f at Carlisle in November. Charisma Cat is also noteworthy.

SMILE BACK created a taking impression when scoring at Carlisle and looks a good prospect. She can take this step up in class in her stride and remain unbeaten. Charisma Cat is an obvious player after making it 2-2 at Warwick, while Dan Skelton, who has a good squad of bumper horses this season, has a strong hand with Getawhisky and Settle Down Jill. Dream Shadow and sole 4-y-o Chatty Girl must also be in calculations.

Fergal O'Brien does extremely well in mares' bumpers and DREAM SHADOW earns the vote ahead of Settle Down Jill.

15:45 Market Rasen Handicap Chase (Class 4) 24f Race Class Flow

The chart reads from right to left to today's class 4 race.

EYED impressed when fairly bolting up here on his penultimate start, before getting no further than the first fence at Lingfield most recently. Provided he is none the worse for that mishap, he gets the nod to return to winning ways. Magical Escape wasn't totally disgraced when fifth over 3m2f on just his second start over fences at Chepstow latest and this unexposed chaser could make his presence felt, along with Knockanore.

Save for his early exit last time, EYED has made a very positive start for this yard and a 9 lb rise for his breakthrough success over fences here in November may not be enough to stop him. Jeffery's Cross put in a decent shift back from a lengthy absence at Windsor and he is greatly respected, while Geryville and Awaythelad have both edged down to attractive marks and will be dangerous if on-song.

Having changed stables this season, EYED could still have more to offer for Hughie Morrison and can add to his win here in November.
