1st (6) (0.73/1 +20%) Hurt You Never |
0.73/1(+20%) | (6) Hurt You Never 0.73/1, Career best when winning 9-runner handicap at Redcar (6f, good to firm, 5/1) 7 days ago, easily. Major player under a penalty. Had plenty of racing but unearthed her career-best RPR when scooting clear at Redcar.. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
2nd (5) (6/1 -20%) Port Noir |
6/1(-20%) | (5) Port Noir 6/1, Won 8-runner handicap at Lingfield (6f, good to firm, 11/2) 7 days ago, snapping a long losing run in the process. Far from certain to back that up under a penalty here but she'll be a threat if able to do so with star apprentice Billy Loughnane in the hot-seat. Effectively only 3lb higher than for last week's Lingfield win on similar ground.. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
3rd (7) (50/1 -52%) Landing Strip |
50/1(-52%) | (7) Landing Strip 50/1, Lightly-raced maiden. 9/1, eleventh of 12 in handicap at Brighton (8f, good to firm) 14 days ago, slowly away. Down in trip and she's opposable. Not progressed from a half-decent debut; going sprinting is a change in direction.. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
4th (1) (8/1 -33%) Jupiter Express |
8/1(-33%) | (1) Jupiter Express 8/1, Hooded for 1st time cheekpieces on for 1st time, seventh of 10 in handicap (6/1) at Catterick (6f, good to firm) 12 days ago, not much room. Looks vulnerable for win purposes. Yard also saddles Fantasy Navigator. Got no luck in running when tried in this new headgear combination at Catterick.. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
5th (2) (9/1 +36%) Gilt Edge |
9/1(+36%) | (2) Gilt Edge 9/1, Eleven runs since last win in 2021. Below form sixth of 11 in handicap (22/1) at Chepstow (6.1f, good to firm) 21 days ago. Has dipped to a workable mark and she's not discounted. Good to soft not ideal so far this season and last year's best form brings her into it.. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
6th (3) (6.5/1 -18%) Almodovar Del Rio |
6.5/1(-18%) | (3) Almodovar Del Rio 6.5/1, Fourth of 7 in handicap at Chelmsford City (6f, 8/1) 33 days ago. Conditions in his favour back on turf and while he doesn't always 100% convince with his finishing effort, a bold show would be no surprise. Not really kicked on from last summer's Brighton win, though hasn't been running badly.. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
7th (8) (20/1 -43%) Alya's Gold Award |
20/1(-43%) | (8) Alya's Gold Award 20/1, Tenth of 12 in minor event (50/1) at Southwell (5f), slowly away. Off 103 days and back up in trip on debut for new yard. Some sign of winning potential at sprint trips in 12 defeats for her previous yard.. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 6 race.
HURT YOU NEVER must saddle a penalty having bolted up at Redcar, but Adrian Nicholls' charge could be difficult to beat if turning up in the same form. Port Noir was able to exploit a drop in the handicap when winning at Lingfield last time out and she merits the utmost respect in the capable hands of Billy Loughnane, while Jupiter Express can't be ruled out eased in class.
It's not everyday that 6f handicaps are won by 5 lengths and HURT YOU NEVER, who did just that at Redcar last week, will take the world of beating under a 5 lb penalty if in a similar mood here. Gilt Edge hasn't hit the target for a while but she's dipped to a potentially handy mark and could be the one to follow the selection home. Almodovar del Rio and recent Lingfield winner Port Noir should both have parts to play, too.
If she's in the same form as at Redcar last week then HURT YOU NEVER is likely to take some stopping under a penalty.

The chart reads from right to left to today's class 5 race.
Etihad Rail did all of his best work late on when finishing third over this trip at Newbury on debut, so this stiff finish should play to his strengths. Debutants from the Andrew Balding stable often improve for their initial experience, though it would be no surprise were Bits And Bobs to go well. A chance, however, is taken on RAFT UP. A full-brother to Sherdil, who hit the woodwork on his debut, there might be some value in siding with the son of Dandy Man.
ETIHAD RAIL showed fair form when third at York on debut and can make that experience count. Bits and Bobs and Cheeky Blimey make most appeal of the newcomers before market clues.
Etihad Rail is preferred of those with experience but BITS AND BOBS was short in the market when a late withdrawal at Windsor.

1st (1) (0.67/1 +55%) Shazam |
0.67/1(+55%) | (1) Shazam 0.67/1, Promising sort. Career best when winning 12-runner handicap (15/2) at Lingfield (10f, good to firm) 7 days ago. Remains open to improvement and likely she'll prove a tough nut to crack under a penalty. Much improved to win at Lingfield (h'cap debut) and effectively only 3lb higher for this.. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
2nd (4) (7/1 -56%) Lillistar |
7/1(-56%) | (4) Lillistar 7/1, Lightly-raced maiden. 3/1, pulled up in handicap at Wolverhampton (9.5f) 34 days ago (race won by Man Made of Smoke). Subsequently found to have an irregular heartbeat and, though in good hands, it's hard to know what to expect of her on this turf debut. Made fav for handicap debut and was found to be suffering from an irregular heartbeat.. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
3rd (2) (7/1 +0%) Midsummer Dance |
7/1(+0%) | (2) Midsummer Dance 7/1, Thrice-raced maiden. Seventh of 10 in maiden at Wolverhampton (9.5f, 50/1) on final start for the Gosdens 73 days ago. Needs a second look now handicapping for new yard. Some promise for the Gosdens; joined a progressive yard and now goes handicapping.. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
4th (5) (4/1 -33%) Jimmy Mark |
4/1(-33%) | (5) Jimmy Mark 4/1, 11/2, career best when winning 7-runner handicap at Bath (10.2f, firm) 11 days ago. 3 lb nudge fair enough and he's unexposed over this sort of trip, so there is plenty of cause for optimism. Hadn't progressed for handicap until justifying market support at Salisbury (1m2f); up 3lb. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
5th (3) (16/1 -88%) Man Made Of Smoke |
16/1(-88%) | (3) Man Made Of Smoke 16/1, One win from 24 Flat runs, that success gained at Wolverhampton in May. Creditable third of 6 in handicap (6/1) at Chepstow (8.1f, good to firm) 4 days ago. Back up in trip and will need to raise his game in order to take this. Capable of winning again but he's exposed and a good few of these aren't.. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
6th (6) (125/1 -150%) Smart Shot |
125/1(-150%) | (6) Smart Shot 125/1, 80/1, eighth of 11 in handicap at Wolverhampton (8.6f) 14 days ago. Looks set for another struggle, unless the addition of cheekpieces help spark a big step forward. Hasn't beaten many in his first six starts from 5f to 8.6f; gets cheekpieces.. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 6 race.
SHAZAM appeared to relish a step up in trip when winning at Lingfield on her handicap debut a week ago, and the Almanzor filly is fancied to repeat the dose under a 6lb penalty. Recent Bath scorer Jimmy Mark ought to remain competitive with Oisin Murphy in the saddle, while Man Made Of Smoke, who continues to run well in defeat, can chase them home.
There was much to like about the way SHAZAM did the job on her handicap debut upped to this trip at Lingfield last week and, with the best surely yet to come from this well-bred filly, she will take plenty of stopping under a penalty with top apprentice Billy Loughnane booked. Jimmy Mark is feared most having improved when opening his account at Bath recently but don't be surprised should Midsummer Dance leave her previous form behind now that she ventures down the handicap route.
An interesting handicap. Shazam will be popular but LILLISTAR is taken to atone for her excusable no-show at Wolverhampton.

1st (4) (28/1 -12%) Amber Island |
28/1(-12%) | (4) Amber Island 28/1, C&D winner. Twelfth of 15 in handicap at Thirsk (7f, good, 40/1) 17 days ago, merely passing beaten rivals. Cheekpieces on 1st time. AW is more her scene these days and she made no impression back on the grass at Thirsk.. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
2nd (3) (6.5/1 -86%) Ernie's Valentine |
6.5/1(-86%) | (3) Ernie's Valentine 6.5/1, Course winner. Respectable third of 9 in handicap (12/1) at Goodwood (7f, good to firm) 11 days ago, nearest finish. Not taken lightly off 1 lb lower here with Tom Marquand aboard. All three wins came over 6f as a 2yo; showed he stays 7f last time but others appeal more.. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
3rd (5) (4.5/1 +25%) Above |
4.5/1(+25%) | (5) Above 4.5/1, Eleven runs since last win in 2021. Below form thirteenth of 21 in handicap (28/1) at Newmarket (6f, soft) 31 days ago, unable to sustain effort. Needs to bounce back but dangerous to discount having slipped to an attractive mark. On a dangerous mark but can be tricky at the start and been slowly away the last twice.. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
4th (1) (7/1 +30%) Maxi Boy |
7/1(+30%) | (1) Maxi Boy 7/1, Eleven runs since last win in 2019. 4/1, creditable second of 7 in handicap at Yarmouth (7f, good) when last seen in September 2021 (gelded since). Subsequent absence an obvious concern but would be a big player if resuming at the top of his game. Lightly raced 6yo who has the form to feature; has been gelded and Murphy is booked.. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
5th (9) (4.5/1 +25%) Royal Musketeer |
4.5/1(+25%) | (9) Royal Musketeer 4.5/1, 13/2, good second of 8 in handicap at Newmarket (7f, good) 19 days ago. By no means certain to confirm the placings with the third, Makeen, but likely to give another good account all the same. Handicapped to be winning races and plenty to like about his Newmarket return.. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
6th (7) (4/1 +27%) Thapa Vc |
4/1(+27%) | (7) Thapa Vc 4/1, Seven wins from 23 Flat runs. 13/2, career best when winning 9-runner handicap at Yarmouth (7f, good to firm) 13 days ago, well ridden. More on his plate up 3 lb in stronger race. Nosed home at Yarmouth; needs a strong pace to run at and this looks stronger.. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
7th (8) (4/1 +50%) Touchwood |
4/1(+50%) | (8) Touchwood 4/1, Creditable third of 8 in handicap at Ayr (7.2f, good to firm, 11/1) 14 days ago, slowly away. Each-way chance with Billy Loughnane aboard. The only held-up horse to make any real impression when third at Ayr the last time.. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
8th (2) (14/1 +13%) Golden Spice |
14/1(+13%) | (2) Golden Spice 14/1, C&D winner. Last of 10 in handicap at Chelmsford City (7f, 18/1) 87 days ago. Since undergone a wind op and she looks vulnerable in this competitive race. Had wind op since a rare poor run last time; can deal with this mark.. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 4 race.
Maxi Boy hasn't been seen for 630 days and the now-gelded son of Oasis Dream warrants a market check on his return, especially when considering the booking of Oisin Murphy. However, a chance is taken on ABOVE, who drops in class following a disappointing run at Newmarket over 6f last month. He is rated 3lb lower now and can be expected to go well, but Royal Musketeer finished a creditable second on his return to action and should not be dismissed.
Compensation awaits MAKEEN, who surely would've won had he got the breaks at Newmarket, an effort which suggests that he's in top form. Ernie's Valentine put in good late work when third at Goodwood last time and, likely to benefit from the return to a stiffer track (sole turf win was gained here as a 2-y-o), he looks a big threat. Maxi Boy is also feared, despite the lengthy absence, and Royal Musketeer, who was a place ahead of the unlucky-in-running Makeen at Newmarket, also has claims.
This might not be run at too strong a gallop but MAKEEN (nap) is tactically versatile and his latest Newmarket run was a big one.

200/1(-150%) | (6) Manxman 200/1, Twice-raced gelding. Twelfth of 13 in maiden (66/1) at Newmarket (10f, good) 18 days ago. Gelded in between his two runs, finishing tailed off in both of them; hard to recommend.. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 4 race.
A wide-open maiden with several appealing contenders lining up, but ZIRYAB appears to be an improving type and is fancied to break his duck at the third time of asking. He kept on for second over a mile in a stronger contest at York last month and a drop in class can see him build on that. Any market support would be significant for Theatre Honours, who showed promise when filling the runner-up spot at Newmarket last month, while Fleet Admiral adds further spice to the race.
THEATRE HONOURS ran to a high level for a newcomer when second to a smart prospect at Newmarket so he should take plenty of beating. Ziryab was no match for his exciting stablemate at York but is still a clear next best ahead of well-bred newcomer Dubai Dreamer.
This looks a decent maiden with ZIRYAB and Theatre Honours the standout contenders. The Gosden runner edges preference.

FAIRBANKS did it very nicely at Haydock on his handicap bow, scoring by just over three lengths, for which he has only been raised 6lb in the weights. The son of Nathaniel has the likelihood of much more to come and he could prove very tough to beat once more. The main danger is Brave Knight, who struck at Windsor last time and competes off 5lb higher. It's All About You is another to consider.
BRAVE KNIGHT was much improved when beating a subsequent winner on his handicap bow at Windsor 2 weeks ago and can defy a 5 lb rise with further progress on the cards. Fairbanks is another who took a big step forward when making a winning handicap debut at Haydock so is the obvious threat, while Dasho Lennie remains with potential having been left poorly placed at Ascot.
Windsor scorer BRAVE KNIGHT looks just the type to improve further and run up a sequence. Fairbanks is second choice.

1st (1) (3.33/1 +17%) Starlight Nation |
3.33/1(+17%) | (1) Starlight Nation 3.33/1, Lightly-raced maiden. Good length fourth of 11 to Bird of Play in handicap at Haydock (7f, good, 7/1) 12 days ago, running on. 2 lb better off with that rival here and should be on the premises. Dropped in from a wide draw at Haydock and stayed on late in the day behind Bird Of Play.. |

2nd (2) (5.5/1 +0%) Bird Of Play |
5.5/1(+0%) | (2) Bird Of Play 5.5/1, 11/1, much improved when winning 11-runner handicap at Haydock (7f, good) 12 days ago, pushed out. More will be needed if he's to follow up but certainly in with a shout if able to build on that. Only 2lb higher than for ridden-out success under these conditions at Haydock.. |

9/1(+10%) | (4) Ignac Lamar 9/1, 14/1, seventh of 10 in handicap at Wolverhampton (6.1f) 22 days ago. 0-6 on turf and likely to find a few of these too good. Two wins on the AW and 0-6 on grass, placed the once; vulnerable to improvers.. |

4th (7) (9/1 -13%) Apex |
9/1(-13%) | (7) Apex 9/1, Lightly-raced maiden. 33/1, respectable eighth of 17 in handicap at Newbury (10f, good) 18 days ago, slowly away. Back down in trip and likely to come up short once more. Twice comfortably held in handicaps; drops in trip with headgear left off.. |

5th (5) (12/1 +45%) Ferensby |
12/1(+45%) | (5) Ferensby 12/1, Lightly-raced maiden. Seventh of 11 in handicap (18/1) at Haydock (6f, good) 12 days ago. Tongue strap on 1st time and will need to take a step forward if she's to open her account. Not offered a huge amount in either of her handicaps; others have more pressing claims.. |

6th (6) (1.38/1 -25%) Roaring Ralph |
1.38/1(-25%) | (6) Roaring Ralph 1.38/1, Promising type. Blinkered for 1st time, career best when winning 8-runner handicap at Redcar (7f, good to firm, 9/2) 7 days ago, forging clear. Huge chance under a penalty. Shot clear in first-time blinkers at Redcar and should defy the penalty.. |

7th (3) (28/1 -100%) Kangaroo |
28/1(-100%) | (3) Kangaroo 28/1, Thrice-raced maiden. 40/1, fifth of 13 in maiden at Kempton (7f) 34 days ago. Improvement needed now handicapping. Confined to the AW and beaten under 2l in his first and last races; handicap debut.. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 5 race.
Bird Of Play had Starlight Nation (fourth) behind when going in at Haydock last time and he could have been let off lightly with only a 2lb rise to contend with, but ROARING RALPH was a more impressive victor, and he just shades the vote. The son of Roaring Lion showed a liking for first-time blinkers as he accounted for his rivals by just under five lengths at Redcar. He boasts leading claims searching for a quick-fire double.
It's hard to look beyond ROARING RALPH, who quickly put the race to bed when coming from off the pace to open his account in first-time blinkers at Redcar last week. He is a step ahead of the handicapper under a 5 lb penalty. Starlight Nation was only a length adrift of the winner Bird of Play at Haydock 12 days ago and, armed with a 2 lb pull, he is taken to reverse those placings and grab the silver medal.
Roaring Ralph has a lot going for him but STARLIGHT NATION wasn't seen to the best effect when fourth at Haydock.
Ths is the racecard key.
