1st (1) (Evens +39%) Great Pepper |
Evens(+39%) | (1) Great Pepper Evens, Dual point winner who showed a good attitude to make a successful hurdling debut in 13-runner novice at Hexham (20.1f, heavy) 49 days ago, finding extra. Likely to improve. Dual point winner; hung on at Hexham despite getting competitive a long way from home. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
2nd (8) (5/4 +0%) To Chase A Dream |
5/4(+0%) | (8) To Chase A Dream 5/4, Point bumper winner who made an encouraging start to his hurdle career when second in a Carlisle novice (17.2, soft) in October, finishing well. Ran to a similar level when filling same spot at Wetherby (19.7f, heavy) and remains unexposed. Second to a smart one at Wetherby and this longer distance should bring him on. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
3rd (7) (25/1 +50%) Beat The Boum |
25/1(+50%) | (7) Beat The Boum 25/1, £12,000 4-y-o, Buck's Boum gelding. Dam (h96), 2½m hurdle winner, closely related to (stayed 19f) Fionn Mac Cul and fair chaser (stayed 21f) Norley (both fairly useful hurdler). Fourth sole start in Irish points (May 1). It wasn't a bad Irish point in which he finished a close fourth in May; bought for £12,000. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
4th (2) (14/1 -180%) Johnny Dogs |
14/1(-180%) | (2) Johnny Dogs 14/1, Off the mark in Irish points at the seventh attempt in April and followed up straight away on his Rules/hurdles debut in 4-runner affair at Market Rasen (20.6f) in June. More needed under a penalty, though. Not a strong maiden he won at Market Rasen; may struggle to defy a penalty. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|PU| (5) (14/1 +58%) Lahardaun |
14/1(+58%) | (5) Lahardaun 14/1, Placed on both of his completed starts in Irish points but was always behind on Hexham hurdle debut. 66-1 for a maiden at Hexham and finished behind both Great Pepper and Clovis Island. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|PU| (4) (150/1 -50%) Greyrobin Star |
150/1(-50%) | (4) Greyrobin Star 150/1, Maiden Irish pointer who offered little when pulled up in a novice hurdle at Carlisle (20f, soft) on Rules debut 64 days ago. Tongue strap quickly applied. Often struggled to complete in Irish points and was well beaten on hurdles debut. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 4 race.
Former point-to-point winners Great Pepper and Johnny Dogs both hold similar profiles in that each won well on their debuts under Rules and enter calculations in this ordinary looking novices' hurdle. However, their mandatory 7lb penalties may hand a big advantage to TO CHASE A DREAM, who ran a blinder when second to a 127-rated rival at Wetherby last month. Stoutly-bred on the dam's side, stepping up in trip ought to suit the selection, whose chance is is further boosted by his four-year-old's weight-for-age allowance.
GREAT PEPPER impressed with his attitude when making a successful hurdling debut at Hexham 7 weeks ago and is selected to defy a penalty having been given ample time to get over such an exacting race. To Chase A Dream has shaped well on both his starts over hurdles and is an obvious threat.
The 4yo TO CHASE A DREAM ran into a smart chaser in his second novices' hurdle and he faces nothing of the same calibre here.

1st (3) (9/2 +0%) Imaginary Dragon |
9/2(+0%) | (3) Imaginary Dragon 9/2, Lightly-raced 5-y-o who made a solid start to his handicap career for new trainer Sandy Thomson when second of 12 over 2m at Newcastle 36 days ago. Up significantly in trip. Unexposed. Pleasing stable debut after an absence; thereabouts if seeing out this longer trip. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
2nd (2) (10/3 -11%) Hashtag Boum |
10/3(-11%) | (2) Hashtag Boum 10/3, Irish point winner who opened her Rules account in decisive fashion in C&D handicap in April. Badly hampered when sixth at Market Rasen in May and resumed her progression when going down only narrowly at Sedgefield 6 months later. Respected back here. Returned to form when beating all bar a backed handicap debutant over 2m4f at Sedgefield. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
3rd (6) (15/2 -67%) Kingston Bridge |
15/2(-67%) | (6) Kingston Bridge 15/2, Bumper winner who showed a likeable attitude to get off the mark in a Carlisle maiden (19f, soft) in March. Placed in 2 of his 3 handicaps since, impressing with the way he travelled when third over 2½m at Hexham (heavy) last month. Considered now stepping up in trip. Perhaps found out by the heavy ground when third at Hexham. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
4th (5) (7/1 -17%) Dunnet Head |
7/1(-17%) | (5) Dunnet Head 7/1, Made a winning debut in a bumper at this track in October 2022 and came back from a breathing operation and a 9-month absence to justify favouritism on his handicap debut at Carlisle (17f, soft) in November. Something can't have been right at Ayr next time and worth another chance. Carlisle winner who just didn't appear to give his running next time at Ayr. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
5th (8) (3/1 +54%) So Many Roads |
3/1(+54%) | (8) So Many Roads 3/1, Much improved when justifying support on handicap debut in 17-runner contest at Ayr (20.5f, heavy) in January. This season's 2 efforts no more than respectable but might just be working his way back to peak fitness. Lacks a change of gear and conditions were heavy for sole success, over 2m4f at Ayr. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
6th (4) (33/1 -313%) Paddy The Horse |
33/1(-313%) | (4) Paddy The Horse 33/1, Point winner who scored twice over hurdles at Hexham last autumn. Also placed over fences at Carlisle in the spring. Should be sharper for chase reappearance here 7 weeks ago and on a workable mark back hurdling. Quiet over fences on his return but he's a dual hurdle winner; has stamina to prove. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
7th (7) (12/1 -20%) Mack The Man |
12/1(-20%) | (7) Mack The Man 12/1, Four-time winner over hurdles for Evan Williams. Off 9 months, looked rusty when 12 lengths sixth of 11 on 20.5f Ayr stable debut 18 days ago. Likely to be sharper now. It was a fairly promising debut for this yard when midfield at Ayr. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
8th (1) (7/1 +13%) Schalke |
7/1(+13%) | (1) Schalke 7/1, Won this race 12 months ago. Wasn't far off his best when midfield in a valuable 3m handicap at Haydock in November and perhaps just didn't take to cheekpieces (discarded in favour of visor) when last at Carlisle since. Remains 6 lb above last year's mark but William Maggs takes 7 lb off. Last year's winner and there's hope for a revival in a new visor. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 3 race.
SCHALKE has faced much stiffer tests that the one he is tasked with here and, while he needs to significantly better his most recent start, the fitting of a first-time visor might well initiate a revival. It's worth remembering the selection was a convincing winner of this race last year and, although 6lb higher, this is a much weaker renewal, with William Maggs' 7lb a further boost at the weights. Hashtag Boum is also a previous C&D winner and enters calculations, while Kingston Bridge is still of low mileage and is another to bear in mind.
This looks competitive. DUNNET HEAD can't have been right last time and might be worth another chance as his Carlisle win prior to that was promising. Hashtag Boum shaped encouragingly at Sedgefield last time and is much respected back at the scene of her win in April. Imaginary Dragon should also get involved if his stamina holds now stepping up in trip, while Kingston Bridge also shaped well at Hexham last time.
Perhaps IMAGINARY DRAGON will provide the answer if seeing out this longer trip on just his second run for Sandy Thomson.

1st (4) (1/2 +64%) Traprain Law |
1/2(+64%) | (4) Traprain Law 1/2, Has done little wrong since crossing the Channel, winning 3 times over hurdles for this yard. Resumed after 7 months off with an encouraging third at Ayr on his chasing debut too so he's a player. Liked it here over hurdles and plenty of positives to take from his third on chase debut. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
2nd (5) (11/2 -65%) Duty Calls |
11/2(-65%) | (5) Duty Calls 11/2, C&D winner who comes here on the back of a good second of 6 in handicap chase here 48 days ago. In the picture despite being 2 lb out of the weights. Enhanced a good record here when just missing out (back from layoff) last month. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
3rd (2) (17/2 -55%) Ganapathi |
17/2(-55%) | (2) Ganapathi 17/2, Hurdles/chase winner for Willie Mullins. Down the field on final 3 starts for Patrick Neville but has been cut plenty of slack by handicapper and offered more than of late for new yard when third at Catterick (19.2f, good to soft) last month. Considered. Not the horse he was but his best run for a while when third at Catterick. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
4th (3) (6/1 -118%) Gold Des Bois |
6/1(-118%) | (3) Gold Des Bois 6/1, C&D winner but only ninth of 11 in handicap chase at Cheltenham (15.9f, good to soft) 42 days ago. Needs to bounce back. Struggled in a strong Cheltenham handicap last time; this is more his scene. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
5th (1) (28/1 -56%) Cilaos Emery |
28/1(-56%) | (1) Cilaos Emery 28/1, Smart chaser at best for Willie Mullins but not nearly so good for his current yard, falling sixth in minor chase at Cagnes-Sur-Mer (18.9f, soft) 23 days ago. Needs to take a big step forward. A long way below his best this year and he took a mid-race fall in France last time. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 3 race.
Despite running from 2lb out of the handicap, DUTY CALLS actually holds a live chance on form and, having run a 121-rated to a neck when second over this course and distance last month, he is dangerous to underestimate, especially when Lewis Stones' 3lb claim is factored into the equation. A dual winner on the hurdles circuit here, Traprain Law is unexposed over fences and is one to monitor closely in the betting, while Ganapathi is another to consider now he is tried with a first-time visor.
TRAPRAIN LAW thrived for Lucinda Russell last term and is fancied to build on a promising chasing debut and bag victory number four for the yard off a handy-looking mark. C&D winner Duty Calls is feared most despite being 2 lb "wrong" in the weights, with Ganapathi appealing as the pick of the rest for minor honours.
Lucinda Russell's TRAPRAIN LAW (nap) liked it here over hurdles and it was a perfectly respectable start he made over fences at Ayr.

1st (2) (13/8 -8%) Young Buster |
13/8(-8%) | (2) Young Buster 13/8, Fair 2m4f winner over hurdles who is improving in this sphere and made a comfortable winning return at this course a month ago. Drop back in trip won't inconvenience him and he's worth a chance to land the hat-trick. 2-2 over fences after last month's clearcut course win; could easily have more to offer. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
2nd (4) (9/4 +10%) Gentleman De Mai |
9/4(+10%) | (4) Gentleman De Mai 9/4, Expensive to follow last season but responded well to a tongue strap when making a winning return here over a bit further. Should go well again. Came good over fences here on seasonal debut (front pair clear); 5lb rise looks manageable. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
3rd (1) (9/2 +10%) Imperial Merlin |
9/2(+10%) | (1) Imperial Merlin 9/2, Bumper winner who gained his third success over hurdles at Ayr in April. Likely to strip fitter for return at Aintree and reason to think he'll take to chasing. 3-6 over hurdles; half-brother to a high-class chaser; interesting on debut over fences. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
4th (5) (11/2 -22%) Domandlouis |
11/2(-22%) | (5) Domandlouis 11/2, Cheekpieces on for 1st time, creditable second of 6 in handicap chase at this course (23.4f, heavy, 9/4) 62 days ago. Seems to have hit his limit over fences and he's vulnerable from out of the weights. 2lb out of the weights today but ran well behind an unexposed one here two months ago. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|PU| (3) (12/1 -20%) Overcourt |
12/1(-20%) | (3) Overcourt 12/1, Dual hurdles winner for Sandy Thomson who finished out of the frame for the first time over fences when last of 5 to Young Buster here a month ago. Likely to bounce back quickly. Below form here a month ago but was second on first two starts for new stable this season. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 3 race.
It is difficult to look past YOUNG BUSTER, who has made a perfect start to his chase career and stepping up in trip seemed to bring about further improvement when scoring here last month. The seven-year-old can land the hat-trick now at the main expense of Gentleman De Mai, who has been consistent since beginning his career over fences and deservedly got off the mark here on his latest outing. Chase debutant Imperial Merlin is another to note having won three of his six starts over the smaller obstacles.
YOUNG BUSTER had loads to spare when scoring here on return and a rise might not be enough to stop him. Imperial Merlin looks an interesting chasing debutant and is feared most ahead of Gentleman de Mai, who also struck here last month.
Top of the list is GENTLEMAN DE MAI, who was one of two to pull well clear of the others when winning here on his seasonal debut.

1st (4) (9/1 -50%) Atlantic Dancer |
9/1(-50%) | (4) Atlantic Dancer 9/1, In good form during the spring, bagging handicaps at Uttoxeter and Kelso. Reappearance spin at Newcastle was probably needed and can be expected to step up on that here but this 10-y-o looks vulnerable all the same. Course winner but needed to show more on her comeback to be strongly considered. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
2nd (1) (11/4 -10%) Ip Up |
11/4(-10%) | (1) Ip Up 11/4, Fair hurdler/chaser in France who struck at the third time of asking for current yard in 2m Fakenham handicap last month. Put in another good shift when a close third at Musselburgh (15.6f, soft) 9 days later (the runner-up has won since) and she's high on the shortlist. In-form mare for whom this return to further could be a positive judged on French form. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
3rd (5) (10/3 +5%) Similar Story |
10/3(+5%) | (5) Similar Story 10/3, Easy winner of a point in May and has shown a fair level of ability in mares' novice events, most recently chasing home a potentially useful type here (16.2f, heavy). Improvement on the cards now moving up in trip for this handicap debut and she's one to consider. Latest remote second was promising with a view to handicaps; can improve. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
4th (6) (13/2 -8%) Line In The Sand |
13/2(-8%) | (6) Line In The Sand 13/2, Left previous Rules form well behind when hitting the crossbar on handicap debut at Sedgefield (21.2f, soft). Lightly-raced and she has to enter calculations off the same mark with this drop back in trip likely to help. Always prominent when runner-up at Sedgefield (2m5f, soft) and that was a solid run. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
5th (3) (8/1 -78%) Nell's Bells |
8/1(-78%) | (3) Nell's Bells 8/1, Bumper winner who scored twice from 4 starts over hurdles last season, including a 6-runner mares' handicap at Newcastle (23.7f, good to soft) when last seen in April. Lack of a recent run no real concern (won on her reappearance last term) but this is tougher up 4 lb. 4lb lower and ridden by an 8lb claimer when winning over nearly 3m at Newcastle in April. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
6th (7) (12/1 -50%) Prontoanita |
12/1(-50%) | (7) Prontoanita 12/1, Shaped with some encouragement in a brace of bumpers and hasn't been overly knocked about in 3 starts over hurdles so far. Type to do better now handicapping but others have more pressing claims. Hasn't progressed from bumper debut but handicaps may see her in a brighter light. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|U| (2) (7/2 +65%) Parvos |
7/2(+65%) | (2) Parvos 7/2, Fair hurdler in Ireland, placed 3 times in maiden/handicap company earlier this year. Inauspicious start for this yard here in October (reportedly had a breathing problem) and she looks risky on the back of that. 2m was too sharp here two months ago but could still have run better than she did. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 4 race.
IP UP looked in need of a step up in trip when running on well for third over shorter at Musselburgh last month. She gets that opportunity on this occasion and, with the form of that race working out well in the interim, Jedd O'Keeffe's mare may have too much for Nell's Bells, who takes a significant drop in trip, having won over much further at Newcastle in April. Similar Story and Line In The Sand are capable of being in the mix.
Given the promise she has shown in three qualifying runs, SIMILAR STORY is of strong interest now switched to handicap company off a realistic opening mark. The former point winner will also be aided by moving back up in trip (likely to stay further than this in due course). The form of Ip Up's solid effort in defeat last time has been boosted and she is feared most ahead of Line In The Sand.
Preference is for the in-form mare IP UP who remains on a competitive mark and is likely to be suited by this return to further.

1st (5) (5/1 +38%) Dream Boy |
5/1(+38%) | (5) Dream Boy 5/1, Successful on last of 3 starts in Irish points and fair form when fourth in a Hexham bumper and 2m Ayr novice hurdle on first 2 outings for this yard. Need to forgive a lesser run back at Ayr since. Two respectable efforts over hurdles at Ayr and should be in the mix. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
2nd (12) (11/10 +51%) Walk On Quest |
11/10(+51%) | (12) Walk On Quest 11/10, £100,000 buy after finishing runner-up in an Irish point in March. Has had a breathing operation ahead of this Rules debut. Also fitted with a tongue strap. Likely type. Bought for £100,000 after finishing runner-up in an Irish point back in March. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
3rd (9) (20/1 -264%) Isholo Du Vivien |
20/1(-264%) | (9) Isholo Du Vivien 20/1, Point winner. Weakened to finish last of 4 on Bangor bumper debut at the beginning of the month but still no surprise were he up to making his presence felt in a race like this now hurdling. Only 9-4 for bumper debut at Bangor but dropped away to finish last of the four. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
4th (13) (11/2 +15%) Wolfburg |
11/2(+15%) | (13) Wolfburg 11/2, Much better effort in bumpers 6 months apart (had breathing operation in between) when third of 12 at Carlisle 54 days ago. That form has been boosted and he sets out over hurdles in a winnable race. Third in Carlisle bumper and capable of another step forward now switched to hurdles. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
5th (10) (125/1 -150%) Master Bricklayer |
125/1(-150%) | (10) Master Bricklayer 125/1, Well held in a course bumper and Ayr novice hurdle 8 months apart. Probably more one for the longer term. Down the field in a Kelso bumper and Ayr maiden hurdle; looks to need more time. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
6th (1) (11/4 +80%) Ballyfort |
11/4(+80%) | (1) Ballyfort 11/4, £30,000 buy from the Irish pointing field who offered something to work on when fifth of 9 in 2m Ayr novice hurdle 55 days ago, albeit he looked a bit tricky (pulled hard and hung left). Hood goes on now. Beaten under 8l in a 2m novice at Ayr and there were some good horses ahead of him. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
7th (11) (40/1 -150%) Northern Cardinal |
40/1(-150%) | (11) Northern Cardinal 40/1, Third in a course bumper in April but not in the same form when down the field in another bumper here 7 months later. Walk On Quest likely the stable first string. Tailed off in the end in a bumper here last time after pulling himself to the front. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
8th (2) (33/1 -175%) Boot 'n' Shoe |
33/1(-175%) | (2) Boot 'n' Shoe 33/1, Reached the frame in a couple of AW bumpers at Newcastle in early 2022 but hasn't been seen since. Betting perhaps the best guide to expectations now hurdling. Beaten about 4l in two AW bumpers at Newcastle in early 2022. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|PU| (7) (200/1 -300%) Foshan |
200/1(-300%) | (7) Foshan 200/1, Modest maiden handicapper on Flat (stays 11.5f), below form final 3 starts in 2023. Best watched now hurdling. 12-race Flat maiden but with placed form to his name and he stayed 1m3f. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 4 race.
WALK ON QUEST was purchased for 100,000 pounds at the Goffs Aintree sale following a runner-up effort in his sole point-to-point outing. The four-year-old boasts an attractive pedigree, with his dam a half-sister to smart 2m chaser Petit Robin, and appears to have been found the ideal opportunity on his Rules debut. Ballyfort shaped with promise on his hurdling bow at Ayr in November and is open to improvement, while Miss Arabella appeals most of the remainder.
The suggestion is Lucinda Russell Irish point recruit WALK ON QUEST, with confidence in his chance increased should the betting vibes be strong. Wolfburg looks an interesting alternative having shown plenty in a Carlisle bumper on his return.
Perhaps the most interesting runner is WALK ON QUEST who fetched £100,000 after finishing second in a point.

1st (2) (5/1 +55%) Rath An Iuir |
5/1(+55%) | (2) Rath An Iuir 5/1, Useful chaser who was successful in this race 12 months ago. Not in same form since, including when well held on return at Wetherby, but now 2 lb lower than last year and perhaps the fitting of more severe headgear (sports a first-time visor here) will do the trick. Made low-key seasonal debut but now 2lb lower than when winning this race a year ago. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
2nd (1) (9/2 +10%) Just Don't Know |
9/2(+10%) | (1) Just Don't Know 9/2, Dual winner again last term (including here) and signed that campaign off with a good second back at this course (23.4f, good to soft) in May. Shaped as though in need of the run over what is probably an inadequate trip on return and he could have a big say with this test more suitable. Course winner last season; probably needed last month's run; high on the list. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
3rd (3) (3/1 +0%) Camp Belan |
3/1(+0%) | (3) Camp Belan 3/1, Thorough stayer who gained his sole success to date over this C&D off a 4 lb higher mark last November. Rather-in-and out since but he put in a decent shift when 5½ lengths third to Gipsy Lee Rose back here last time and entitled to get closer to that rival on these revised terms. C&D winner last season and ran well behind Gipsy Lee Rose here last month; in the mix. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
4th (4) (9/2 -29%) Onestepatatime |
9/2(-29%) | (4) Onestepatatime 9/2, All 3 career wins gained in handicap chases at Sedgefied, the latest a narrow success over 26.9f (heavy) last month. Wasn't disgraced off this revised mark over the same C&D next time, for all that she failed to justify short-priced favouritism, and couldn't rule out with James King booked. 3-9 over fences (all wins at Sedgefield); James King is a good booking; a possible. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
5th (6) (5/1 -122%) Gipsy Lee Rose |
5/1(-122%) | (6) Gipsy Lee Rose 5/1, Capitalised on a career-low mark when scoring by a whisker over this C&D (heavy) last month, despite being the first one off the bridle. 5 lb 'wrong' at the weights this time but remains feasibly treated overall and she needs considering. Kept on stoutly for narrow C&D win last month but effectively 8lb higher today. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
6th (5) (11/2 +21%) Don Brocco |
11/2(+21%) | (5) Don Brocco 11/2, Modest winning hurdler who bettered his chase debut display when third in an 8-runner handicap at (24.2f, heavy) 16 days ago. Should pick up a race in this sphere at some point, assuming he manages to build on that, but others make more appeal on this occasion. Placed at Hexham recently but contests this stronger race from 3lb out of the weights. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 4 race.
GIPSY LEE ROSE needed every yard of the trip to score over C&D on her latest start and the use of Paddy Hanlon's 7lb claim gives her every chance of backing up that success. Onestepatatime was a beaten favourite on her most recent outing at Sedgefield but is capable of leaving that effort behind her. Camp Belan and Don Brocco head the remainder.
A trappy-looking contest, with all six holding a chance. JUST DON'T KNOW's form figures here read 212 prior to a low-key reappearance effort last month and, with that run under his belt and this step back up in trip a plus, he could be the answer. Camp Belan has a good chance of reversing last-time-out C&D placings with Gipsy Lee Rose on these revised terms and is second choice ahead of Onestepatatime.
Thorough stayer JUST DON'T KNOW gets the nod in the hope that last month's reappearance run did him good.
Ths is the racecard key.
