1st (5) (4/1 -14%) Mr Mackay |
4/1(-14%) | (5) Mr Mackay 4/1, Made the frame on his first 3 starts in bumpers, including in a listed contest at Cheltenham on New Year's Day. Shaped better than the distance beaten suugests sent hurdling when third at Worcester (2m) last month and entitled to do better over this longer trip. Made underwhelming hurdle debut last month but was promising in bumpers last season. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
2nd (3) (0.83/1 -66%) School Days Over |
0.83/1(-66%) | (3) School Days Over 0.83/1, Looked a useful prospect in bumpers, winning at Market Rasen on debut before an excellent second in Cheltenham listed event. A rather mixed bag over hurdles since but sets a clear standard on the pick of his form nonetheless. Runner-up in Listed bumper last autumn and has shown fair hurdle form since; major player. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
3rd (1) (250/1 +0%) Book Of Verse |
250/1(+0%) | (1) Book Of Verse 250/1, Regressive Flat maiden shaped with no promise tried over hurdles after 5 months off at Uttoxeter in August. Can't be fancied. Lowly rated Flat maiden who struggled when 200-1 for last month's stable/hurdle debut. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
4th (2) (1.75/1 +56%) Jimmy Boy |
1.75/1(+56%) | (2) Jimmy Boy 1.75/1, Fair maiden hurdler who ran respectably when sixth of 14 in 18f maiden at Ballinrobe (good to soft) on final run for W. J. Burke 43 days ago. Cheekpieces retained on first start for fledgling trainer and needs considering. Placed in big-field Cork maiden this summer and a likely contender on this stable debut. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|F| (4) (125/1 -150%) Tampico Rocco |
125/1(-150%) | (4) Tampico Rocco 125/1, Poor form at best in bumpers so looks up against it making hurdling debut after 13 months off. Showed only minor promise in his four bumpers, the latest in September 2022. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|PU| (6) (150/1 -200%) No Post On Sundays |
150/1(-200%) | (6) No Post On Sundays 150/1, Mahler filly. Dam, unraced, closely related to fairly useful hurdler/chaser (stayed 2½m) Gus Macrae and fairly useful 2½m hurdle winner Victory Mill. Wears hood. Market for clues. Half-sister to a point winner; hooded for debut; entitled to learn from this outing. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 4 race.
This looks like an ideal opportunity for SCHOOL DAYS OVER to get off the mark in this sphere, having shown up well last season on a couple of occasions without winning. Runner-up in a Listed bumper at Cheltenham last November, his level of form should be too much for Mr Mackay, who went well for a long way at Worcester before a mistake at the second last cost him. Irish recruit Jimmy Boy has plenty of experience and must be noted for any market support.
SCHOOL DAYS OVER proved expensive to follow over hurdles last season, but he sets a clear standard on the pick of his form and is worth one more chance on his return to action. Mr Mackay can improve on his opening effort in this sphere at Worcester last month and is feared most ahead of Jimmy Boy, who sets out for the upwardly-mobile stable of James Owen.
Placed in Ireland during the summer, JIMMY BOY has recently joined a burgeoning new stable and might be the answer.

1st (2) (9/1 +0%) Whodini |
9/1(+0%) | (2) Whodini 9/1, Improved form switched to fences, off the mark on debut in this sphere at Newcastle and doubled his tally at Ayr (16.5f, good). Too free at Cartmel next time and looked held in fourth when falling at the last at Stratford when last seen in July. Dual 2m chase winner towards end of last season and could still have improvement to come. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
2nd (6) (17/2 +47%) Magistrato |
17/2(+47%) | (6) Magistrato 17/2, Won novices' handicap chase on final outing for Paul Nicholls at Warwick (16.2f) in May and ran to a similar level on first 2 starts for current yard. However, below-par effort at Stratford (19.4f) in July and remains unproven beyond 2m. Respected run back over hurdles latest. Has posted some fairly good efforts for his new stable but is not straightforward. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
3rd (7) (9/1 -20%) Friary Rock |
9/1(-20%) | (7) Friary Rock 9/1, Made a winning return at Perth (2m4f) in May but out of sorts last 3 starts. Won off 4lb higher in the spring but weakened rather tamely on latest outing. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
4th (1) (4/1 -14%) Hidden Depths |
4/1(-14%) | (1) Hidden Depths 4/1, Multiple Flat/hurdles winner who made a winning chase debut at Kempton during the spring. Patchy form since but resumed winning ways with a career best at Sedgefield last week, plenty in hand. Needs considering under a penalty. Drew clear to win quite comfortably by 13l at Sedgefield last week; carries 7lb penalty. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
5th (5) (5/1 +23%) Line Of Descent |
5/1(+23%) | (5) Line Of Descent 5/1, Got off the mark over fences at Stratford in April and a winner at Cartmel and Southwell since. Poor efforts next 2 starts but bounced back when second at Plumpton. Return to further will suit. Triple chase winner since spring; posted sound effort when second last month; in the mix. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
6th (3) (3/1 -33%) Chess Player |
3/1(-33%) | (3) Chess Player 3/1, Course winner in May and comes here on the back of a career-best success in 5-runner handicap chase at Stratford (19.4f, soft) 40 days ago. 7 lb rise looks justified and big shout. Seemed to take form to whole new level when wide-margin winner in August; shortlisted. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
7th (4) (7/2 +22%) Tommy Cullen |
7/2(+22%) | (4) Tommy Cullen 7/2, Got off the mark at third time of asking when easily landing 4-runner novice hurdle at Doncaster in December. However, down the field both starts in handicaps since so something to prove now chasing (placed on last of 3 starts in Irish points). Just a respectable fifth in handicap hurdle here in April but may fare better now chasing. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 4 race.
An easy winner at Stratford last time out, CHESS PLAYER must hold every chance of following up from a 7lb higher mark, while the fact he won here over shorter in May is another major plus. Hidden Depths arrives with similar claims after a bloodless success at Sedgefield last week, but a 7lb penalty will make life tougher and Neil Mulholland's charge has never been the most consistent. Line Of Descent is another capable performer on his day and will appreciate going back up in distance.
CHESS PLAYER resumed winning ways in emphatic fashion at Stratford 6 weeks ago and a 7 lb rise looks on the lenient side. Hidden Depths had plenty in hand at Sedgefield last week so is an obvious threat under a penalty, with Line of Descent best of the others.
The suggestion is WHODINI, who collected two 2m chases earlier this year and might progress again over this longer trip.

1st (1) (11/2 +45%) Mikhailovich |
11/2(+45%) | (1) Mikhailovich 11/2, Offered little on first 2 starts in this sphere but seemingly took a step in the right direction when third in a 19f Taunton novice in February. Heavy defeat on handicap debut over C&D the following month and he's been off since. 100-1 third in Taunton novice in February but struggled in C&D handicap in March. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
2nd (8) (6/5 +47%) Benny Silver |
6/5(+47%) | (8) Benny Silver 6/5, Had shown promise in bumpers and offered more on his third attempt over hurdles when third in novice at Doncaster (16.6f) in January, staying on late. That race worked out well and he found only one too good on August return/handicap debut at Uttoxeter. More to come. Ran big race in defeat on handicap debut in August and was only nudged up 1lb for that. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
3rd (7) (9/1 +50%) Emily Wade |
9/1(+50%) | (7) Emily Wade 9/1, Made second handicap start a winning one at Southwell in March. Placed on next 4 outings prior to taking a backward step when last seen in July. Likely to bounce back given overall profile. In good form in spring; laboured when last seen in July but a break may have refreshed her. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
4th (6) (15/2 -88%) Lucky's Dream |
15/2(-88%) | (6) Lucky's Dream 15/2, Fairly useful winner at 10f on Flat but better form on the AW than turf. First hurdles outing since 2020 but represents a yard in good form and the market may prove revealing. Not seen over hurdles since 2020 but has showed quite useful form on the Flat this summer. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
5th (5) (9/2 +25%) Anger Management |
9/2(+25%) | (5) Anger Management 9/2, Caused an upset in 4-runner juvenile event here a year ago and looked well at home over 19.6f when doubling tally ay Bangor a month ago. Up 4 lb but he can given it another good go. Course winner a year ago and doubled tally with hard-fought success at Bangor last month. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|PU| (2) (14/1 -40%) Champagne Town |
14/1(-40%) | (2) Champagne Town 14/1, Winning pointer who got back on track in a first-time hood when runner-up at Southwell in May. That equipment left off following another breathing op and he was disappointing back down to 2m at that venue a month ago. Second at Southwell in May but not in same form there last month; tends to race too freely. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|PU| (3) (16/1 +20%) Sir Canford |
16/1(+20%) | (3) Sir Canford 16/1, Off the mark over hurdles at the third attempt for this yard in 2½m Uttoxeter handicap in July. Heavy defeats both starts since raise questions and he's now in a change of headgear. Form has dipped alarmingly since Uttoxeter win in May; headgear switched here. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 5 race.
BENNY SILVER returned from a 215-day break to run a career-best when second at Uttoxeter in August and that form gives him very strong claims in this. The from of his stable could hardly be better and the son of Mastercraftsmen gets the vote ahead of unexposed handicap debutant Saint Jaguen and Anger Management, who returned to winning ways with a determined success at Bangor-on-Dee last month.
BENNY SILVER couldn't quite justify support on reappearance/handicap debut at Uttoxeter in August but it was a promising run nonetheless and he looks ahead of his mark for a yard going great guns. Saint Jaguen should have more to offer and is feared, along with Anger Management.
Raised just 1lb for his creditable second at Uttoxeter six weeks ago, low-mileage 5yo BENNY SILVER is taken to go one better today.

1st (1) (1.1/1 +12%) Regarde |
1.1/1(+12%) | (1) Regarde 1.1/1, Only achieved a modest level over hurdles last season but this former Irish point winner still appeals as one likely to go on to better things over fences. Interesting runner. Showed promise over hurdles last season; Irish point win bodes well for chasing prospects. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
2nd (3) (5.5/1 +8%) Honneur De Sivola |
5.5/1(+8%) | (3) Honneur De Sivola 5.5/1, Made an encouraging start to his chasing career, finishing second around 2m here and at Market Rasen at the start of the summer. Not so good on his next 2 outings and latest Plumpton second came in a weak race and was still short of his best. Second to revitalised subsequent winner at Plumpton last month; moves up in trip today. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
3rd (6) (9/1 -125%) If I Say |
9/1(-125%) | (6) If I Say 9/1, Placed 3 times over fences this summer and was in process of running creditably again when departing 2 out at Worcester last time. Should be in the shake-up. Placed in three chases this summer and is unexposed over this trip; each-way claims. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
4th (8) (25/1 -25%) Out For The Count |
25/1(-25%) | (8) Out For The Count 25/1, Disappointing over hurdles and unseated at the first on recent Uttoxeter chase debut. Modest maiden hurdler who unseated rider at first fence when 33-1 for chasing debut. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
5th (7) (4/1 +11%) Hollow Ron |
4/1(+11%) | (7) Hollow Ron 4/1, Justified market support in 6-runner handicap hurdle at Uttoxeter (23f) in June. Proved a let down at Worcester with cheekpieces added (retained) the following month but it's still early days and this former point winner may bounce back now chasing after a 3-month break. Off mark over hurdles in June, and this winning pointer should have a future over fences. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
6th (4) (14/1 -17%) Decoration Of War |
14/1(-17%) | (4) Decoration Of War 14/1, Showed little promise in 4 starts over fences last summer and yet to really get going this time either. Refitted cheekpieces need to make a big difference. Ran okay in a chase in August but well beaten over hurdles since; too unreliable. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|R| (5) (40/1 +50%) Claude Almighty |
40/1(+50%) | (5) Claude Almighty 40/1, Down the field in bumpers/over hurdles, including on handicap debut 4 weeks ago. Remains to be seen if a switch to fences makes any difference. Well beaten on last month's handicap hurdle debut; back up in trip for this chasing debut. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|U| (9) (15/2 +58%) Carapaz |
15/2(+58%) | (9) Carapaz 15/2, Failed to complete both starts in points and has no more than hinted at ability under Rules, finishing a remote fifth of 8 at Southwell (20.5f) in this headgear combination last time. Safely held off lowly marks in first two chases; moves up from 2m4f today. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 5 race.
REGARDE was successful in the pointing sphere back in March 2022 and the six-year-old, who didn't exactly go on as expected in four starts over hurdles, has the opportunity to take a big step forward now switched to chasing. Honneur De Sivola only found one too good over an extended 2m3f at Plumpton last time and he is 2lb lower now stepped up in trip, while If I Say completes the shortlist.
REGARDE has the profile of one who could fare a lot better now chasing and gets the vote, with confidence in his chance increased should the betting vibes be strong. If I Say has shown he can be very competitive from his mark and is second choice ahead of Hollow Ron, who like the selection is a chase newcomer with a point win to his name.
He has stamina to prove today but HONNEUR DE SIVOLA threatened to win a chase in the spring and again ran well in defeat last month.

1st (1) (4.5/1 +36%) Ballintubber Boy |
4.5/1(+36%) | (1) Ballintubber Boy 4.5/1, Won twice at up to 23f last season but he was pulled up at Market Rasen in May and again performed poorly back from a break last month. Probably best watched for now, for all that he would be very dangerous if able to bounce back here with a soft lead likely. Dual hurdle winner last season but pulled up both outings this term; needs to bounce back. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
2nd (5) (3.33/1 +39%) The Questioner |
3.33/1(+39%) | (5) The Questioner 3.33/1, Won a 3m handicap hurdle at Ascot in November and made a successful switch to fences at Doncaster before excellent third in North Wales National at Bangor. Respectable third returned to this sphere at Stratford (26.4f, soft) when last seen in April and big chance here, provided he's fully tuned-up. Hurdle/chase winner last term; signed off with good run in April; resumes on workable mark. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
3rd (3) (7/2 -75%) Blue Sans |
7/2(-75%) | (3) Blue Sans 7/2, On a 4-timer following a hat-trick of 3m Southwell handicap wins on various ground-types. More will be needed again after another rise in the weights but merits plenty of respect in current mood. Back in prime form this season, winning three in a row at Southwell; obvious contender. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
4th (2) (3/1 +0%) Edison Kent |
3/1(+0%) | (2) Edison Kent 3/1, Winner of a big-field Killarney maiden hurdle for Jessica Harrington back in May 2021. Largely struggled since but better signs since joining James Owen, again finding just one too good upped to 25f at Warwick (good) recently. Bold show anticipated. Three good runs for new stable last month; may yet have a bigger performance in him. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
5th (4) (6/1 +20%) Pottlerath |
6/1(+20%) | (4) Pottlerath 6/1, Successful 3 times over hurdles during 2022 and sprouted wings over fences at the start of the summer, completing a hat-trick at Bangor. Creditable third on second start back in this sphere at Warwick (2¾ lengths to find with the re-opposing runner-up there, Edison Kent). Couldn't rule out. Triple chase winner this year and a very respectable third over hurdles last month. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
6th (6) (8/1 +0%) Unspeakable |
8/1(+0%) | (6) Unspeakable 8/1, Little impact on first 4 starts over hurdles but, in first-time tongue tie, showed much improved form when winning handicap upped to 3m at Taunton in March. However, he was beaten a long way at Warwick next time and needs to get back on track here following a break. Flopped in two of his three handicaps but won in between; may still have potential. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 4 race.
BLUE SANS arrives in excellent form following a hat-trick of victories, all of them coming at Southwell during the summer months, and a 5lb rise for the latest success may not be enough to stop her. Edison Kent has been knocking on the door recently, with a step up in trip appearing to unlock some improvement, and he enters calculations along with The Questioner.
In what looks like a pretty trappy affair, THE QUESTIONER could be the answer. He didn't go on as hoped following a promising start over fences last season but he's profile in this sphere is a largely progressive one and he resumes on a manageable mark (just 1 lb higher than for his chase debut success at Doncaster in January). Edison Kent holds Pottlerath based on their recent meeting at Warwick and he is feared most ahead of the in-form but up-in-the-weights Blue Sans.
James Owen's EDISON KENT (nap) may not have enjoyed favourable tactical scenarios when second in his last two races and gets the nod.

20/1(+60%) | (1) Beaming Light 20/1, Harbour Law gelding. Dam modest maiden on Flat (stayed 6f). Out of a half-sister to a bumper winner; small stable had two bumpers winners last season. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 5 race.
TOPKAPI is a rare runner in this sphere for Andrew Balding and the son of Bobby's Kitten, whose half-sister was a winner over an extended 1m3f on the level, makes plenty of appeal with Sean Bowen a notable jockey booking. Hill Spirit boasts a decent pedigree and represents a yard that have done particularly well with their limited National Hunt runners. Suleiman Artist, Theincrowd and Saved Lizzie are others worth noting.
A bumper for unraced 3-y-os and the betting may help sort them out with HILL SPIRIT, Suleiman Artist and Topkapi selected as the three against the field as things stand.
The suggestion is TOPKAPI, who represents a top Flat stable and has more compelling stamina credentials than some.
Ths is the racecard key.

Horse racing is a popular and historic sport in the UK, with a tradition dating back centuries. It is a multi-billion pound industry that attracts millions of spectators each year and generates significant economic activity.
There are two main types of horse racing in the UK: flat racing and jump racing. Flat racing is run on a level course and is typically shorter in distance, while jump racing involves horses jumping over obstacles and is generally longer in distance. Both types of racing are popular with spectators and bettors, and they take place at various racetracks throughout the country.
The most famous horse racing event in the UK is the Grand National, which is held annually at Aintree Racecourse in Liverpool. It is a jump racing event that is known for its challenging course and has become a national institution in the UK. Other notable horse racing events in the UK include the Derby, held at Epsom Downs Racecourse in Surrey, and the Royal Ascot, held at Ascot Racecourse in Berkshire.
Horse racing in the UK is regulated by the British Horseracing Authority (BHA), which sets rules and standards for the industry. It is responsible for the welfare of racehorses and the safety of jockeys and trainers, as well as ensuring fair and transparent racing practices.
