1st (9) (17/2 +29%) Mammies Boy |
17/2(+29%) | (9) Mammies Boy 17/2, Much improved when getting off the mark in 16-runner handicap hurdle at Taunton (19f, good to soft) in February. Raised 10 lb for that and he was beaten 8¾ lengths into fifth by King of The Road at Market Rasen since. Won at Taunton; not discredited off 10lb higher with Market Rasen fifth since; considered. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
2nd (6) (11/1 +21%) Jaramillo |
11/1(+21%) | (6) Jaramillo 11/1, Unreliable individual who has largely struggled since opening his hurdles account in a Sedgefield novice handicap last February. Did take a step back in the right direction when fourth of 9 at Taunton (19f, good) recently but he's no good thing to build on it. Solid Taunton fourth 15 days ago but unreliable sort and he needs to back it up now. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
3rd (7) (10/3 +56%) Forget The Way |
10/3(+56%) | (7) Forget The Way 10/3, Won a 2m Worcester handicap for Alan King last summer. Placed on next 3 starts but off since pulling up over fences at Wincanton in January. New stable returns him to hurdles and steps him back up in trip. Pulled up over fences at Wincanton final run for Alan King; bit to prove for his new yard. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
4th (1) (3/1 -33%) King Of The Road |
3/1(-33%) | (1) King Of The Road 3/1, Improving 5-y-o who arrives on a hat-trick after 2 wins at Market Rasen (18.5f/16.5f) this spring. Up another 10 lb but it may not stop him with further progress likely. Upwardly-mobile sort who bids for a hat-trick after landing Market Rasen h'caps; big shout. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
5th (3) (14/1 -75%) Fautinette |
14/1(-75%) | (3) Fautinette 14/1, Unbeaten all 3 starts over hurdles in France. Struggled badly on her first 5 starts in Britain but better signs when stepped up to 21f at Wincanton 6 weeks ago, finishing third of 9. On a handy mark if she can back that up. Best effort for current yard when third at Wincanton 43 days ago; one for the shortlist. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
6th (12) (33/1 -65%) Let's Go Joe |
33/1(-65%) | (12) Let's Go Joe 33/1, Runner-up in a point before making a winning hurdles bow for new yard in maiden at Sedgefield in November but his 3 efforts since switching to handicaps have been disappointing (fences last twice). Won at Sedgefield (2m4f) in November but he hasn't kicked on since. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
7th (5) (40/1 -100%) Fat Sam |
40/1(-100%) | (5) Fat Sam 40/1, Took a heavy fall over fences at Newton Abbot last summer and was perhaps still feeling those effects when down the field in a chase and hurdle in the autumn. First outing for 7 months. Others more persuasive. Winless since 2022 and below par over fences/hurdles when last seen out seven months ago. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
8th (8) (12/1 -33%) Cottie |
12/1(-33%) | (8) Cottie 12/1, Scored at Downpatrick last June for Henry de Bromhead but hasn't fired in 4 runs for Dan Skelton, including when the market spoke in her favour at Cheltenham last month. Still no surprise were she to click for this yard at some point but has a bit to prove for now. Yet to hit top form for her current handler, only ninth at Cheltenham latest; needs more. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
9th (4) (9/1 -50%) Kay Tara Tara |
9/1(-50%) | (4) Kay Tara Tara 9/1, Bumper winner on debut and made a successful start in this sphere over C&D (good) in October. Placed on next 3 starts (including a handicap) but does need to shrug off poor run in the Mares' EBF Final at Newbury in March. C&D winner; in very good form until pulled up at Newbury latest; sort to bounce back. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|PU| (2) (8/1 -7%) Mistral Milly |
8/1(-7%) | (2) Mistral Milly 8/1, Showed some promise in two bumpers for Alan King and has made steady progress over hurdles for this yard, finishing second of 6 on 21.5f Hereford handicap debut last month. May do better again. Runner-up in Hereford h'cap last time; can't be discounted despite taking a 3lb rise. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|PU| (13) (10/1 +60%) Lifetime Legend |
10/1(+60%) | (13) Lifetime Legend 10/1, Good second in first-time visor here (20.5f) in March last month but not so good at Taunton last month. Below-par sixth in a second-time visor at Taunton (2m3f) last time; others appeal more. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|PU| (10) (33/1 -106%) Ferrobin |
33/1(-106%) | (10) Ferrobin 33/1, Revived out of the blue when springing a 66/1 surprise over C&D (good) a fortnight ago. Recent record raises doubts about him backing that up but he retains handicapping scope on old form. 66-1 C&D winner 14 days ago; not the easiest to catch right so others appeal more. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|PU| (11) (80/1 -21%) Charlie My Boy |
80/1(-21%) | (11) Charlie My Boy 80/1, Big improver over hurdles when winning a pair of handicaps at up to 2½m for Keiran Burke at the start of last summer but well held in 3 runs back with John Jenkins this spring. Has offered little for his current stable, last of eight here latest; has plenty to prove. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 4 race.
King Of The Road supplemented his opening victory at Market Rasen in March when defying a 7lb penalty 10 days later at the same venue. However, a further 10lb hike in the handicap could leave the five-year-old vulnerable and marginal preference is for MISTRAL MILLY. Emma Lavelle's mare found only a progressive rival too strong on her handicap bow at Hereford last month and she looks capable of better. Jaramillo may chase that duo home.
The progressive KING OF THE ROAD can defy the handicapper again and complete a spring hat-trick. Mistral Milly is another 5-y-o going the right way and is second choice ahead of Fautinette, who took a step back in the right direction when third at Wincanton last time.
It's hard to ignore improving KING OF THE ROAD (nap) who can make light of a 10lb hike in the weights and complete his hat-trick

1st (1) (7/4 +13%) Chatty Chich |
7/4(+13%) | (1) Chatty Chich 7/4, Well held in 3 qualifying runs in mid-winter but placed in a bumper at the start of her career and upped her game when second at Fakenham 27 days ago, shaping like this even stiffer test would suit. Good shout. Looked all about stamina when second of six on handicap debut at Fakenham (2m7f) latest. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
2nd (5) (4/1 +11%) Valentine Getaway |
4/1(+11%) | (5) Valentine Getaway 4/1, Has made the frame in all but one of her 6 starts since venturing down the handicap route, and her latest third at Ludlow on return was another solid showing. Should be on the premises again. Eight-race maiden with minor honours in her last four handicaps; place chance again. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
3rd (2) (16/1 -100%) Headscarf Lil |
16/1(-100%) | (2) Headscarf Lil 16/1, Returned to form on the back of a breathing op when successful at Market Rasen a year ago and ran at least as well when narrowly denied at Perth (3m) in September. Not at best since but latest run at Ayr best excused. Not disgraced two months ago when back from a 12-week break; capable of being thereabouts. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
4th (3) (11/1 -175%) Kentford Mallard |
11/1(-175%) | (3) Kentford Mallard 11/1, Consistent mare who scored at Hereford in October. Right back on track when second at Wincanton 18 days ago and is one to consider back up in trip. October's Hereford win was 3m1f; second at Wincanton 18 days ago following a winter break. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
5th (9) (22/1 +12%) Baby Sham |
22/1(+12%) | (9) Baby Sham 22/1, Successful twice during middle part of 2023 but struggled to land a telling blow since. Won last May/June, latterly over 3m2f at Fontwell; pretty remote in her two latest starts. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
6th (8) (14/1 +30%) Quiet Thunder |
14/1(+30%) | (8) Quiet Thunder 14/1, More miss than hit since opening her account in a Stratford novice in June 2022 and while her latest run on the Flat was a creditable effort, she's opposable on balance. Fit from Flat and continues down the weights as a hurdler but others are more persuasive. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
7th (4) (13/2 +54%) Malina Jamila |
13/2(+54%) | (4) Malina Jamila 13/2, Bumper/hurdles winner but not the most consistent, typically following a solid fourth at Doncaster with a brace of lesser efforts, albeit she went off too hard at Taunton on latest. Visor replaces cheekpieces. Both wins (bumper and maiden hurdle) were at this track, on her only two visits; visor now. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|PU| (6) (9/2 +0%) Bluebella |
9/2(+0%) | (6) Bluebella 9/2, Much improved when getting off the mark at Worcester (2m) a year ago and consistent in the main since. Not seen since running poorly in Uttoxeter 7 months ago but worth monitoring in the betting on return. Mostly running with credit but not one of her peak efforts when upped to 2m7f last time. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|PU| (10) (40/1 -233%) Catlin |
40/1(-233%) | (10) Catlin 40/1, Now dipped below last winning mark but well held both completed starts this term and tends to save her best efforts for Newcastle. Back over hurdles. All 3 chase wins 2m7f at Newcastle, most recently in November 2022; lightly raced since. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|PU| (7) (80/1 -142%) Chief Lady |
80/1(-142%) | (7) Chief Lady 80/1, Winning pointer but has yet to offer anything of note under Rules and looks set for another struggle. Heavy defeat when 50-1 at Plumpton (2m4f) last time on handicap debut; bred to stay 3m. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 5 race.
Chatty Chich is sure to prove popular having finished second on her handicap debut at Fakenham in April. A 2lb higher rating is unlikely to prevent another prominent showing from the Dan Skelton-trained mare, but KENTFORD MALLARD may offer more value. The veteran bounced back to form with a runner-up effort on her reappearance over 2m4f at Wincanton last month and a return to her last winning distance could see the daughter of Sulamani land the spoils. Bluebella also warrants a second look.
CHATTY CHICH was well backed prior to an improved showing on handicap debut at Fakenham and, with this longer trip/more conventional track in her favour, she's well fancied to go one better at the possible expense of the reliable Kentford Mallard. Valentine Getaway is another to consider.
Although the second on her handicap debut does not make CHATTY CHICH the form pick, it did show potential and strength of stamina.

1st (7) (6/4 +40%) Tarras Wood |
6/4(+40%) | (7) Tarras Wood 6/4, Overcame inexperience when making a winning debut in a bumper in 2022. Runner-up effort in December flanked by a brace of heavy defeats (folded at Wetherby in February) but he sets the standard if he's back on his game. Debut bumper scorer but beat only one at Wetherby latest; good claims if back on song. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
2nd (3) (8/1 -14%) Juan Bermudez |
8/1(-14%) | (3) Juan Bermudez 8/1, Fairly useful handicapper on Flat for Andrew Balding, stays 2m. Ran poorly final 2 outings in that sphere and just a fair start over hurdles having transferred to another top yard, third at Fakenham and then sixth at Warwick. Fairly useful Flat winner; not disgraced both runs for new yard in this sphere; player. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
3rd (6) (3/1 +45%) Reallyntruthfully |
3/1(+45%) | (6) Reallyntruthfully 3/1, €26,000 3-y-o, £48,000 4-y-o, Jet Away gelding. Half-brother to fair hurdler Gold Smoke. Dam (h106), bumper winner. Runner-up sole outing in points last spring and fair start to Rules career when fourth in a course bumper last month. This trip will suit now hurdling. 2nd in point before shaping well on bumper debut when fourth here; firmly in the picture. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
4th (10) (13/2 +46%) Imperious Star |
13/2(+46%) | (10) Imperious Star 13/2, Flemensfirth mare who has shown ability in 2 novice hurdles around 2m and promises to be suited by this step up in trip. Won't need to raise her game much to figure in this. Has shown some promise on both her hurdling runs; can't be ruled out up in trip. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
5th (2) (250/1 -25%) Dontaskchris |
250/1(-25%) | (2) Dontaskchris 250/1, Well held in bumper/novice hurdle 11 months apart and then refused to race at Fontwell. Refused to race at Fontwell last time; has major questions to answer. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
6th (5) (16/1 -100%) Pottersjetamay |
16/1(-100%) | (5) Pottersjetamay 16/1, Well held in trio of bumpers but did at least show a bit making hurdles debut when third of 7 in a Market Rasen maiden (20.6f) in March. Built on that when occupying same spot at Kempton, not given a hard time and there may well be more to come. Good third in Kempton novice 17 days ago; he may do better still; possibilities. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
7th (13) (6/1 -50%) Secret Des Dieux |
6/1(-50%) | (13) Secret Des Dieux 6/1, Hooded last 2 starts in bumpers and achieved fair form, plugging on for second at Uttoxeter last month. Hurdles debutant for in-form yard. Runner-up in bumper at Uttoxeter 33 days ago; one to consider going hurdling up in trip. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
8th (1) (80/1 -220%) Champetre |
80/1(-220%) | (1) Champetre 80/1, Fair bumper performer for Harry Whittington but no show in 2 runs over hurdles this season. Yet to offer much in a pair of maiden hurdles at Wincanton and Catterick this winter. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
9th (14) (200/1 +0%) Prairie Queen |
200/1(+0%) | (14) Prairie Queen 200/1, Has looked limited in bumpers over hurdles. Has offered little on both her runs over hurdles; it's easy to look elsewhere. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|PU| (9) (10/1 +50%) Chooch |
10/1(+50%) | (9) Chooch 10/1, Showed more than she had in 2 bumpers when fourth of 10 in a novice at Huntingdon (20.7f, good to soft) on hurdles bow, finishing with running left. Unable to build on that at Southwell but capable of better at some point. Looks to be being brought along steadily over hurdles; open to progress in due course. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|PU| (11) (150/1 -200%) My Dream |
150/1(-200%) | (11) My Dream 150/1, Proclamation mare who didn't show a great deal in a brace of bumpers early in 2023. Up in trip for hurdles debut having left Tim Vaughan. Poor form shown in a pair of bumpers; goes hurdling after 15 months off with lots to prove. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|PU| (8) (150/1 -127%) Blue The Money |
150/1(-127%) | (8) Blue The Money 150/1, From a leading stable but she looked limited in bumpers and fared no better switched to hurdling last month. Had a wind op before pulled up at Chepstow 13 days ago; lots more is required. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|PU| (12) (200/1 -300%) Implied |
200/1(-300%) | (12) Implied 200/1, Oasis Dream gelding. Brother to a winner and half-brother to 3 winners on Flat, including smart 1m-9f winner Pocket Square. Modest form at best in handful of outings on the level and always behind on hurdles debut. Beat only one on his hurdling debut in 2m Ludlow novice 70 days ago; others appeal more. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|PU| (4) (200/1 -203%) Mop's A Legend |
200/1(-203%) | (4) Mop's A Legend 200/1, Poor form in 2 bumpers/over hurdles so far. Last in Fakenham maiden hurdles 27 days ago; goes up in trip with lots to find on form. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 4 race.
JUAN BERMUDEZ wasn't disgraced when finishing sixth in a 14-runner affair at Warwick a fortnight ago and the five-year-old could be worth chancing in an open event. The Nathaniel gelding was a decent stayer on the Flat and this extended 2m4f distance should draw out his stamina. The biggest threat may emerge from Tarras Wood, who needs to dispel a heavy defeat at Wetherby in February, while hurdles debutant Secret Des Dieux cannot be ruled out either.
REALLYNTRUTHFULLY made an encouraging start to his Rules career when fourth in a course bumper a month ago and with this trip sure to suit now hurdling, he could be the answer. Tarras Wood isn't easy to weigh up but is a big danger on the form he displayed when second at Wincanton, with Secret des Dieux also considered for his in-form yard.
The vote goes to JUAN BERMUDEZ who was a fairly useful winning stayer on the Flat and can open his account in this sphere now up in trip

Home Free |
(4) (7/2 +13%)7/2(+13%) | (4) Home Free 7/2, Landed the odds on his third start over hurdles in 3-runner novice at Lingfield (2m, heavy). Disappointed on handicap debut at Wincanton last month though very much the type to make a chaser. Eased 3lb since underwhelming handicap hurdle debut; nephew of Graded 2m chase winner. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
1st (5) (9/1 +50%) Stormin Crossgales |
9/1(+50%) | (5) Stormin Crossgales 9/1, Headstrong sort who has yet to add to his chase debut success, pulling too hard at Ludlow 7 weeks ago. Mark continues to slide but others more solid. Dual Wincanton winner in 2022; no excuses here with trip, ground and mark all perfect. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
2nd (8) (11/4 +69%) Stumps Or Slips |
11/4(+69%) | (8) Stumps Or Slips 11/4, Winner of first 2 completed starts in this sphere and respectable effort back from a 6-month break when fourth of 8 in handicap chase at this course (19.9f, good to soft, 10/1) 45 days ago. Entitled to come on for that. 5lb higher than for the last of two wins a year ago (good); jumping still not perfect. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
3rd (1) (4/1 +27%) Hystery Bere |
4/1(+27%) | (1) Hystery Bere 4/1, Fairly useful hurdles scorer who made a winning start in this sphere in 4-runner handicap at Warwick a year ago. Mixed record since and just respectable third in this headgear at Plumpton latest, making mistakes. Back to within 1lb of mark defied on last May's chasing debut (2m); ground is fine. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
4th (3) (2/1 +43%) One Fine Man |
2/1(+43%) | (3) One Fine Man 2/1, Landed 2m handicaps at Carlisle/Ayr last February for James Moffatt. Low-key for current yard last season but much more encouragement when second at Bangor final start, closed all the way to the line. Big shout now he's back in form. Back to form with Bangor near-miss latest; still well treated on 2023's winning form. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
5th (6) (10/1 -43%) Force De Frap |
10/1(-43%) | (6) Force De Frap 10/1, Scored at Bangor and Ludlow last term. Disappointed for the first time since chasing for the yard at Wincanton final start but type to bounce back. Slow-ground Bangor and Ludlow winner this last winter; assessor now appears in charge. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
6th (7) (12/1 -20%) Romanor |
12/1(-20%) | (7) Romanor 12/1, Keen sort and usually held up (best delivered late). Failed to win last season but held his form pretty well at least. Off 7 months. Trip, ground and likely race shape are all perfect, but absence since October is a worry. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|PU| (2) (14/1 -75%) Rouge Vif |
14/1(-75%) | (2) Rouge Vif 14/1, High-class chaser at best but lost his way for Harry Whittington. Well below form after 11 months off when remote second at Hereford on yard debut 9 weeks ago but entitled to come on for that and mark reduced again. Second on stable debut in March, albeit beaten 23l; couldn't be certain a revival is near. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 4 race.
Hystery Bere was beaten into third in a class 3 event at Plumpton in March, but he is 2lb lower and will appreciate this drop in grade under Harry Cobden. However, the vote goes to ONE FINE MAN, who finished over five lengths clear of the third at this level at Bangor on his latest outing and he is only 3lb higher for that display. Declan Carroll's nine-year-old could be the one to beat, while Home Free warrants a market check on his chasing debut.
ONE FINE MAN turned in easily his best effort for his current stable when a close second at Bangor last month and remains on a handy mark up 3 lb. Home Free is an interesting chasing debutant and is another to consider, while Rouge Vif is obviously not the force of old, but he's at least been given a chance by the assessor.
Nephew of a 2m Graded chase winner and newly eased 3lb, HOME FREE can make a winning start over fences, ahead of One Fine Man.

Testflight |
(9) (3/1 +33%)3/1(+33%) | (9) Testflight 3/1, This mark is a fair one based on bits and pieces of form and bettered his chase debut display when third of 9 at Wincanton on latest start in October. Still, it's hard to ignore the fact that his record stands at 0-14 overall. Signed off with respectable third in the autumn; contender if tuned up after break. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
1st (6) (7/1 -8%) Flemen's Tipple |
7/1(-8%) | (6) Flemen's Tipple 7/1, Runner-up a few times over hurdles but yet to threaten in this sphere and he's probably worth taking on, for all that the booking of Harry Cobden catches the eye. Ended last season with some poor efforts and is yet to convince as a chaser. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
2nd (2) (4/1 -60%) Samtara |
4/1(-60%) | (2) Samtara 4/1, Improved over hurdles last spring, winning a Hereford handicap before finishing a fine second of 13 at Cheltenham. Not in the same form since, including returned to this sphere on his last 3 starts, but his mark is on the slide and he'll be a threat if coping with this step back up in trip. Has modest strike-rate but ran well for a long way at Exeter last month; not ruled out. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
3rd (4) (9/2 +78%) Dunworley |
9/2(+78%) | (4) Dunworley 9/2, Made the frame in several points and fair second on hunter chase debut in May of last year. However, he's failed to build on that since and is essentially opposable. Second in C&D hunter chase last May but has not shown a great deal since. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
4th (8) (7/2 +42%) Chantilly Rose |
7/2(+42%) | (8) Chantilly Rose 7/2, No great shakes over hurdles but she's in good hands and it'll be interesting to see which way this 7-y-o goes in the betting now upped in trip for this chase debut. Soundly beaten in both handicap hurdles but Dan Skelton is persisting with her. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
5th (1) (10/3 +17%) Let's Go Amigo |
10/3(+17%) | (1) Let's Go Amigo 10/3, Winless following 8 attempts over hurdles but was arguably unlucky not to land a handicap at Ludlow in that sphere last spring. Wouldn't need to improve much for the switch to fences in order to have a say in the finish. Ended last year with two below-par hurdle runs; makes chasing debut after five-month break. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
6th (3) (15/2 -50%) What A Steal |
15/2(-50%) | (3) What A Steal 15/2, Third in a Wincanton maiden hurdle last February and shaped pretty well back from a break/wind op when sixth in a 15-runner Doncaster handicap in November. Subsequent effort at Market Rasen was poor but could be a factor if able to get back on track now switched to fences with cheekpieces added. 0-6 over hurdles but ran quite well two starts ago; up in trip for chasing debut. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|PU| (7) (22/1 -10%) Rum Cove |
22/1(-10%) | (7) Rum Cove 22/1, Will need to leave his low-key hurdles exploits behind if he's to make a successful start over fences here. Well beaten on handicap hurdle debut; remains unexposed; now makes chasing debut. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 5 race.
LET'S GO AMIGO has failed to fire on each of his last two starts over the smaller obstacles but he now makes his chasing debut off a career-low mark. Kim Bailey's gelding has cheekpieces reapplied and he just shades the vote ahead of Samtara, who was dropped 3lb for his fourth at Exeter last month. Testflight hit the frame at Wincanton when last seen in October and could also have a say on his return to the fray.
If LET'S GO AMIGO takes to fences at the first time of asking he could be the answer in a race devoid of a standout candidate. Kim Bailey's charge was a good third in a Ludlow handicap hurdle off a 3 lb higher mark last spring, a race he may well have won but for encountering traffic problems at a crucial stage. Chantilly Rose didn't show much over hurdles but she wouldn't be the first from this yard to improve for the switch to fences, while Samtara and What A Steal are others to consider.
It's hard to build a strong case for any of these but SAMTARA ended last season with two fairly good efforts, and is well handicapped.

Step Ahead |
(9) (9/4 +92%)9/4(+92%) | (9) Step Ahead 9/4, Walk In The Park gelding out of a useful one for connections. Rare runner for trainer and interesting. Out of a bumper/seven-time mares' hurdle winner (two Listed); shrewd yard; intriguing. |

Sayva |
(8) (11/1 -38%)11/1(-38%) | (8) Sayva 11/1, €35,000 3-y-o, Harzand gelding. Half-brother to dual bumper winner/useful hurdler Saylavee, stays 3m, and fair chaser Cool Country. Dam useful 2¼m-21f hurdle winner. Half-brother won two bumpers this time two years ago; ought to enter calculations. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Lynda's Pet |
(10) (80/1 -21%)80/1(-21%) | (10) Lynda's Pet 80/1, Half-sister to fairly useful hurdler/chaser Pauls Hill (21f-3¼m winner, by Marienbard) and fairly useful hurdler Starsky (3m-3¼m winner, by Shantou). Unplaced sole start in Irish points (Mar 2023). Unseen since down the field in an Irish point in March 2023, and might just need this. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
1st (4) (3/1 +70%) The Long Point |
3/1(+70%) | (4) The Long Point 3/1, £60,000 Kingston Hill gelding. Third sole start in Irish points (Nov 2023). Near-3l third on sole Irish point start (3m, yielding); check market on British debut. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
2nd (6) (18/1 +28%) My Boy Aaron |
18/1(+28%) | (6) My Boy Aaron 18/1, Modest form in bumpers, still needed experience at Taunton 4 weeks ago. Vulnerable. Doesn't win this on the evidence of two bumpers so far, albeit on rather deeper ground. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
3rd (2) (9/2 +55%) John Barbour |
9/2(+55%) | (2) John Barbour 9/2, Yeats gelding. Half-brother to fairly useful hurdler/chaser St Barts, and half-brother to bumper winner/useful hurdler Gidleigh Park. Lots to like on paper. Dam and half-brother (Grade 2 hurdler Gidleigh Park) both won bumpers; worth considering. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
4th (7) (6/4 +57%) Octo Gane |
6/4(+57%) | (7) Octo Gane 6/4, €52,000 3-y-o, Muhtathir gelding. Dam French hurdler/chase winner up to 2¼m. Lots of Flat middle-distance winning prowess in the immediate family; respected on debut. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
5th (3) (40/1 +20%) Midnight Sting |
40/1(+20%) | (3) Midnight Sting 40/1, Bred for stamina and has shaped that way in Fakenham bumpers. Failed to build on November's mildly promising Fakenham third back there at Easter (good). |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
6th (5) (33/1 +34%) Kilos Kelos |
33/1(+34%) | (5) Kilos Kelos 33/1, Half-brother to fairly useful hurdler El Champo and fair 2m hurdle winner Fia Fuinidh. 12/1, hinted at ability on debut at Wincanton 3 weeks ago. Lots more needed. Didn't last home on last month's Wincanton bumper debut (1m7f, good); may need more time. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
7th (11) (15/2 -50%) Dawn Parade |
15/2(-50%) | (11) Dawn Parade 15/2, Soldier of Fortune filly. Dam bumper/fairly useful 17f-21f hurdle winner (stayed 25f) for connections. Of obvious interest on debut. Out of a Worcester bumper winner (good) for the Skeltons; looks among the likelier ones. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
8th (1) (8/1 -129%) Berliath |
8/1(-129%) | (1) Berliath 8/1, £65,000 Clovis Du Berlais gelding. Half-brother to 4 winners, including fairly useful hurdler/useful chaser On The Slopes. Easy to back, already had a breathing operation and looked badly in need of the experience on debut at Taunton 10 weeks ago. Could prove a different proposition this time. Early reminders when 33l third on Taunton debut (soft); needs to have learned plenty. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 5 race.
Berliath finished a well-beaten third behind a stablemate who went on to acquit himself well in Aintree's Grade 2 bumper on his Taunton introduction. He will be expected to step forward, but maybe THE LONG POINT can make a successful start to his Rules career because the form of his point-to-point third in Ireland seems decent. He sold for 60,000 pounds after it, not much more than Octo Gane changed hands for as a three-year-old. Sayva, John Barbour and Dawn Parade are other interesting first-timers.
BERLIATH may leave his Taunton form behind and could be the way to go. Dawn Parade and Step Ahead are a couple of the interesting newcomers.
Don Cantillon's first rules runner since a debut bumper winner in autumn 2022, STEP AHEAD is taken ahead of Octo Gane.

(5) (11/8 +21%)11/8(+21%) | (5) Patch Man 11/8, Walk In The Park gelding. Closely related to smart 2m hurdle winner Sir Erec and half-brother to 2 winners on Flat. Interesting on paper and one to note on debut. Closely related to Listed Flat/smart hurdler Sir Erec; trainer won this race last year. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
1st (3) (4/1 +88%) King Ulanda |
4/1(+88%) | (3) King Ulanda 4/1, Kingston Hill gelding out of a modest maiden hurdler, half-sister to smart hurdler/chaser (stayed 23f) Desert Cry and fairly useful 2m hurdle winner/useful chaser (stayed 25f) Uisce Beatha. Useful or better dual-purpose performers in the immediate family; maybe one for later on. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
2nd (8) (5/2 -25%) Handfulofpromises |
5/2(-25%) | (8) Handfulofpromises 5/2, €19,000 3-y-o, £20,000 5-y-o, Westerner mare. Dam, maiden pointer, half-sister to useful hurdler (19f winner) Magic Fabien and fairly useful hurdler (stayed 23f) Sandymount. Runner-up sole start in Irish points (Feb 4). Makes a fair bit of appeal on debut. 2l second on February's Irish point start (3m); not overfaced on this British/rules debut. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
3rd (7) (5/1 +90%) Walden |
5/1(+90%) | (7) Walden 5/1, Just modest form and held in Taunton/Bangor bumpers. More needed. Didn't progress from first outing to second, albeit on softer ground than awaits here. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
4th (10) (3/1 +40%) Jessie Jump Jet |
3/1(+40%) | (10) Jessie Jump Jet 3/1, Blue Bresil filly. Dam useful 19f-25f hurdle winner. Noteworthy newcomer for stable with a good record in this sphere. Dam won Grade 3/Listed 2m3f-2m4f hurdles for same connections; starts at realistic level. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
5th (1) (28/1 +65%) Stonegate |
28/1(+65%) | (1) Stonegate 28/1, Seemingly showed much improved form 8 months on from his debut when fourth at Market Rasen in November, but better placed than most and readily outspeeded when it came to the crunch. Off again since. Market Rasen fourth in November (at 250-1) represented a forward step; more needed. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
6th (2) (12/1 +64%) Barleythorpe |
12/1(+64%) | (2) Barleythorpe 12/1, 16/1, hinted at ability on debut at Market Rasen last month, held back by inexperience. Outpaced and then weakened when beaten 26l on last month's debut; could do better. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
7th (6) (12/1 +52%) Runaway Train |
12/1(+52%) | (6) Runaway Train 12/1, 16/1, showed a bit on debut at Market Rasen 4 weeks ago. Beaten 39l on his Market Rasen debut, not necessarily working it all out; can fare better. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
8th (4) (16/1 +20%) Now I Know |
16/1(+20%) | (4) Now I Know 16/1, 18/1 and hooded, offered little on debut at Kempton 8 weeks ago, looking badly in need of the experience. Tongue strap goes on. Refused to settle when beaten 38l on March's Kempton debut; tongue-tie replaces the hood. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
9th (9) (250/1 -150%) Lucille Diamond |
250/1(-150%) | (9) Lucille Diamond 250/1, 100/1, pulled hard and well beaten on debut at Uttoxeter a fortnight ago. 100-1, didn't work out the required when 69l last of nine on her recent debut (soft). |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 5 race.
A Sir Mark Prescott bumper runner is always worth a second look, especially one with the pedigree of PATCH MAN, who is a half-brother to the ill-fated Grade 1 winner Sir Erec. He changed hands for 100,000 euros as a foal, and again for 85,000gns just under a year later, and is preferred to Handfulofpromises, who showed ability when second between the flags in Ireland. Jessie Jump Jet makes plenty of appeal on breeding and is in receipt of all the allowances.
This will probably be fought out by newcomers, with PATCH MAN taken to see off Handfulofpromises and Jessie Jump Jet.
This can go to a Sir Mark Prescott-trained runner for the second year running, PATCH MAN gaining the nod over Jessie Jump Jet.
Ths is the racecard key.
