1st (3) (10/3 +39%) Return Fire |
10/3(+39%) | (3) Return Fire 10/3, Ended last season out of sorts but wasn't beaten at all far back hurdling on his recent reappearance and he's of interest back here (winner of both completed starts over fences at this course) off a reduced mark. 2-2 in completed starts at Hexham, including a success in this race two years ago. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
2nd (1) (15/8 -50%) Kelce |
15/8(-50%) | (1) Kelce 15/8, Lightly-raced maiden in Ireland and, having understandably looked in need of the run on return/debut for new yard at Fontwell last month, he subsequently went close on recent chase debut in first-time cheekpieces (retained) at Uttoxeter (2½m, good to soft). Big player. Improved effort at Uttoxeter last week on chase debut; 3lb higher in future; respected. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
3rd (8) (12/1 +0%) Gibberwell |
12/1(+0%) | (8) Gibberwell 12/1, Only fifth over this C&D on final start of last season but record here is otherwise strong (form figures at Hexham read 122245). On the downside, his record when fresh doesn't augur well ahead of this first run for 6 months. C&D winner in 2023; close second off 4lb higher in this race 12 months ago. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
4th (5) (14/1 +58%) Empty Nest |
14/1(+58%) | (5) Empty Nest 14/1, Still a maiden and opposable on the back of tame efforts here and at Market Rasen on his last 2 appearances. Maiden; pulled up twice early this season and absent since. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
5th (7) (11/2 +27%) Ange Endormi |
11/2(+27%) | (7) Ange Endormi 11/2, Winner of just one of his 14 starts over hurdles but pretty consistent on the whole in that sphere and latest third of 12 over 23.3f in first-time cheekpieces (retained) here last month was a solid effort. 1 lb lower now switched to fences and wouldn't be without hope if his jumping passes the test. Ran respectably here on latest hurdles start; possibilities if taking well to fences. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
6th (2) (10/1 -11%) Lights Are Green |
10/1(-11%) | (2) Lights Are Green 10/1, Resumed winning ways in a handicap chase at Cartmel during the summer but it's been a low-key 2024 otherwise for this 7-y-o. Others preferred. Three-time chase winner off lower marks; form dipped the last twice. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|PU| (6) (7/1 +22%) Ocean Legacy |
7/1(+22%) | (6) Ocean Legacy 7/1, Winless since last May 2023 but performed with credit on a couple of occasions for Dermot McLoughlin earlier this year and wasn't disgraced on debut for this yard at Sedgefield (26.3f, good to soft) 19 days ago. 2 lb lower here and each-way chance if able to build on that. Ex-Irish; modest third at Sedgefield on debut for new yard; needs to improve. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|PU| (4) (20/1 -300%) Gipsy Lee Rose |
20/1(-300%) | (4) Gipsy Lee Rose 20/1, Hit the target twice last season, taking a small-field 2½m Newcastle handicap (heavy) on latest outing in March. 3 lb rise by no means prohibitive and moving back up in trip won't be an issue, so she could have a say if fully tuned-up for this. Absent since Newcastle win in March; placed in this contest for the last two years. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|PU| (9) (100/1 -52%) Bannside |
100/1(-52%) | (9) Bannside 100/1, Pulled up on first run following 19 months off at Kelso recently and he's hard to fancy. Form is largely poor; yet to finish in the first five. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 5 race.
Only worn down late in the piece when second on his chase debut over 2m4f at Uttoxeter last week, KELCE is expected to build on that excellent effort. The six-year-old is preferred to proven stayer Gipsy Lee Rose, who scored over further at Kelso last November and was a winner at Newcastle latest, though seems to have a preference for softer ground. A respectable fourth on his return at Kelso last month, Return Fire cannot be ruled out either.
KELCE produced a near-fautless round of jumping when narrowly outpointed on his recent chase debut at Uttoxeter, and he will prove hard to beat off the same mark here (due to go up 3 lb for that effort) with improvement likely now moving up in trip. C&D winners Return Fire and Gipsy Lee Rose are taken to fill the places, in that order of preference, while chase-debutant Ange Endormi and Ocean Legacy are also worthy of consideration.
Unexposed chaser KELCE (nap) is 3lb ahead of the assessor and may prove difficult to beat. Return Fire is second choice.

1st (1) (2/1 -82%) Fromheretoeternity |
2/1(-82%) | (1) Fromheretoeternity 2/1, Runner-up in handicap at Wexford (17.2f) in May, before seeming stretched by longer trip when seventh of 18 at Listowel (20.4f, good) the following month. Left Declan Queally and fitted with cheekpieces, she displayed much-improved form when successful at Worcester 3 weeks ago. Sets the standard. Won just a Class 5 handicap last time; penalised but this isn't a strong novice. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
2nd (5) (15/2 +70%) Sunset Hill |
15/2(+70%) | (5) Sunset Hill 15/2, Unplaced in points and minor promise only both starts under Rules. Well held on two previous visits here (bumper/novice) and opposable for now. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
3rd (2) (8/11 +52%) Just Call Me Lucy |
8/11(+52%) | (2) Just Call Me Lucy 8/11, Related to a point winner and bolted up on second bumper start at Carlisle (17f, soft) in December. Fared as well as could be expected when mid-field in Grade 2 company at Aintree and she's a major player on hurdles debut. Form in bumpers good enough to suggest she has a bright future over hurdles. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
4th (6) (33/1 -50%) Uokhun |
33/1(-50%) | (6) Uokhun 33/1, Arcadio mare who is bred to stay well and shaped with some encouragement when fourth of 11 in bumper at Musselburgh (15.6f, good to soft) last March. Off 10 months after and looked in need of the run on hurdles debut in January. Tongue tie on having missed further 9 months. Ran okay in a bumper but then dropped into a selling hurdle and was pulled up. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
5th (4) (100/1 -1011%) Reina Blanca |
100/1(-1011%) | (4) Reina Blanca 100/1, Sea Moon filly. Dam (b78), in frame once in bumpers, half-sister to smart hurdler/chaser (stayed 25f) Tazbar. Shaped like a stayer in a Fontwell bumper in September but kept to 2m for hurdles bow. Remote fourth of the six runners in a Fontwell bumper. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
6th (3) (25/1 -56%) Lady Buttercup |
25/1(-56%) | (3) Lady Buttercup 25/1, Left previous bumper form well behind when landing 6-runner contest at Warwick in September. Low-key hurdles debut at Southwell since, though. Won a weak bumper and she struggled at lengthy odds when switched to hurdles. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 4 race.
A revelation on her first start for the Jennie Candlish stable last month when scoring at Worcester, FROMHERETOETERNITY might have a bit more improvement in her and the daughter of Doyen is taken to go in again. A bumper winner at Carlisle last December before competing at a much higher level the last twice, Just Call Me Lucy must be of interest on her hurdles bow, while Reina Blanca is another to monitor for market support.
Likely to develop into a match between JUST CALL ME LUCY and Fromheretoeternity, with marginal preference for the former in receipt of 7 lb in the hope she takes to hurdling at the first attempt.
Mark Walford's JUST CALL ME LUCY showed more than enough in bumpers to believe she can win a novice hurdle of this nature.

1st (1) (5/2 +55%) Chasingouttheblues |
5/2(+55%) | (1) Chasingouttheblues 5/2, £22,000 purchase having finished placed all 4 starts in Irish points. Noted being outpaced before keeping on again when fifth of 10 in a Carlisle novice (17f, soft) on hurdles bow 22 days ago and this increase in trip promises to suit. Worth a second look. Stuck on late at Carlisle (2m1f) recently and today's longer trip round here should suit. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
2nd (6) (4/1 +56%) Kidman |
4/1(+56%) | (6) Kidman 4/1, Lightly-raced hurdler who improved when second of 4 in novice at Newcastle (22f) in November 2022. After a further 16 months off, shaped as if retaining his ability when fourth in a Kelso maiden in March, so worth a second look back from another 8 months off. Barely seen in recent times and it will be interesting to see how he goes in the market. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
3rd (3) (7/2 +13%) Express Run |
7/2(+13%) | (3) Express Run 7/2, Failed to justify support when down the field only start in bumpers but showed more of what he's about when second of 9 in novice hurdle at Wetherby (19.7f, good) on hurdles bow 7 days ago. Will need to brush up his jumping, however. Much better switched to hurdles last Friday; player if brushing up his jumping. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
4th (4) (100/1 +0%) Fairly Fulling |
100/1(+0%) | (4) Fairly Fulling 100/1, Safely held all 3 starts in bumpers but did shape much better than distance beaten suggests on second start over timber when eleventh of 14 in a 2m novice here in June, faltering entering straight. Off since but handicaps likely to be more suitable moving forward. Big prices and beaten a long way in three bumpers and two runs over hurdles. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
5th (8) (66/1 -725%) Wee Alki |
66/1(-725%) | (8) Wee Alki 66/1, Alkaadhem gelding. Half-brother to a point winner. 8/1, sixth of 11 in bumper at Perth (16.2f, good) on NH debut 83 days ago. Makes hurdles debut. Up in trip. Half-brother to two point winners and today's stiffer test should suit now hurdling. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
6th (9) (16/1 -60%) Authorized Mission |
16/1(-60%) | (9) Authorized Mission 16/1, Authorized gelding who took small steps forward with each run for Iain Jardine, sixth of 11 in bumper at Ayr (2m) in April. Switched yards ahead of hurdles bow and interesting to see what the market makes of him. Nothing exciting in three bumpers for Iain Jardine; needs to improve for the yard switch. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
7th (2) (150/1 0%) Danno's Dollar |
150/1(0%) | (2) Danno's Dollar 150/1, Little impact both starts in bumpers for Sandy Thomson and similar story in trio of hurdle starts for present yard. Can only be watched at present. Well held in two bumpers for Sandy Thomson and three runs over hurdles for this yard. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
8th (7) (50/1 +50%) Red Sam |
50/1(+50%) | (7) Red Sam 50/1, Black Sam Bellamy gelding. Discouraging start in pair of hurdle outings earlier this year, pulled up on both occasions. Passed over after 8 months off with cheekpieces reached for. Pulled up both starts early in the year, having not jumped well latterly; headgear on. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|F| (5) (5/2 -11%) Helsgetaway |
5/2(-11%) | (5) Helsgetaway 5/2, Showed ability in bumpers and promising start in this sphere/after 6 months off when seventh of 13 in novice hurdle at Wetherby (19.7f, good to soft) 23 days ago, outpaced before staying on gradually. Looks sure to improve for that initial experience. The stiffer track should suit off the back of a fair hurdles debut; goes on the shortlist. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|PU| (10) (22/1 -560%) Shadowfax Of Rohan |
22/1(-560%) | (10) Shadowfax Of Rohan 22/1, In-the-frame all 3 starts in bumpers but below pick of form starting out for new yard when fourth of 11 in bumper at Perth (16.2f) in August. Hood goes on for hurdles debut and booking of Brian Hughes an obvious plus. Not discounted. Fair 4th in Perth bumper for new yard but needs more now hurdling in a first-time hood. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 4 race.
A promising second on his hurdles debut at Wetherby last week, EXPRESS RUN outran his odds and, but for some jumping errors late on, he may well have gone closer. Justin Landy's charge is expected to have improved for that spin and he may have too much for Shadowfax Of Rohan, who performed with credit on his first start for new connections at Perth in August and could go well on his hurdles bow. Chasingouttheblues should relish the step up in trip and is another to bear in mind.
HELSGETAWAY showed plenty to work on when finishing midfield on hurdles debut at Wetherby 23 days ago and with that experience unlikely to be lost on him, he can find the requisite improvement and come out on top. Hurdles-debutant Shadowfax of Rohan and Chasingouttheblues are others to consider, along with the returning Kidman.
Today's longer trip should suit Chasingouttheblues, while the stiffer track ought to help HELSGETAWAY, whose dam was a dour stayer.

1st (5) (5/2 +38%) Dream Jet |
5/2(+38%) | (5) Dream Jet 5/2, Fair hurdler who opened his chase account at Market Rasen in July, overcoming a slipping saddle. Good efforts since, placed again but not seeming at his best after just 3 days off when third of 5 to The Churchill Lad at this C&D (good) 5 weeks ago. Not out of things from 2 lb lower. Won h'cap chase in July; fair form since; bit to find with a couple of these on C&D form. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
2nd (2) (5/4 +55%) The Churchill Lad |
5/4(+55%) | (2) The Churchill Lad 5/4, Hit the target 3 times over hurdles and perfect start in this sphere when seeing off 4 rivals over C&D last month, beating Caithness by a head. Ran creditably behind a rejuvenated second-season novice at Carlisle since and should continue to give a good account. Winning hurdler; two good chase runs, beating Caithness over C&D first time; chance. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
3rd (3) (3/1 +14%) One More Stroke |
3/1(+14%) | (3) One More Stroke 3/1, Made a promising start over hurdles last season, winning novices at Catterick and Carlisle. Done for finishing speed but still ran well in handicap at Newcastle (16.9f, heavy) when last seen in April and chasing could be just his bag. Tongue tie goes on. Won 2 novice hurdles last term; 2nd on his two starts in points; chase debut; a possible. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|F| (4) (8/1 +33%) Ballyfort |
8/1(+33%) | (4) Ballyfort 8/1, Shaped with plenty of promise in novice hurdles last season and was presumably having a pipe-opener after 7 months off when a never-dangerous eleventh of 15 on handicap debut at Kelso (16.2f, good to soft) recently. Attentions now turned to chasing (maiden in Irish points). Placed in three points; best hurdles run when 3rd at Kelso; bit to prove on chase debut. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 4 race.
The Churchill Lad pipped Caithness over C&D, with Dream Jet back in third, before finding only one too strong when attempting to follow up at Carlisle. There is more to come from him, but a chance is taken on the fitness of ONE MORE STROKE. Donald McCain's five-year-old was a promising novice hurdler earlier in the year and lost little in defeat on his handicap debut at Newcastle. He has the potential to make up into a much better chaser, certainly one who is capable of handling a mark of 115.
Cases can be made for all the quintet, but the suggestion is CAITHNESS, who went down by a head to the race-fit The Churchill Lad on chasing debut over C&D 5 weeks ago and can turn the tables now 1 lb better off with that rival here. One More Stroke, who was runner-up on both starts in Irish points earlier in his career, rounds off the shortlist making his return/chase bow fitted in a tongue tie.
After his promising second on his chase debut over C&D last time CAITHNESS is taken to reverse the placings with The Churchill Lad.

1st (9) (11/4 +8%) National Question |
11/4(+8%) | (9) National Question 11/4, Excellent second of 14 in handicap hurdle at Newcastle (16.9f, good, 40/1) 8 days ago. Has to be taken seriously despite being marginally out of the weights. Best run over hurdles when 2nd last week; 4lb better off here so a chance but inconsistent. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
2nd (7) (7/2 +56%) Blended Stealth |
7/2(+56%) | (7) Blended Stealth 7/2, Long-standing maiden but made the frame on his first 3 starts of the last campaign and returned with a respectable third at Perth 44 days ago. Cheekpieces go back on and he's worthy of respect. 0-26; two fair efforts over 3m in the summer; below-par last twice; headgear change. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
3rd (3) (8/1 -60%) Forest Blaze |
8/1(-60%) | (3) Forest Blaze 8/1, Bumper debut fourth at Newcastle wasn't completely devoid of promise but beaten a long way over hurdles subsequently. Seems a likely improver on handicap debut with a recent run behind him. Fair form in a bumper; modest efforts over hurdles but may improve now going handicapping. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
4th (2) (13/2 +54%) Skiddaw |
13/2(+54%) | (2) Skiddaw 13/2, Showed ability on first couple of hurdling outings but failed to kick on from that. Interesting to see if there is a market move for him returning from 8 months off. Fair run on reappearance last term, but didn't build on that; plenty to prove. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
5th (1) (18/1 -157%) A Day To Dream |
18/1(-157%) | (1) A Day To Dream 18/1, Modest on Flat and just similar form over hurdles, not quite on his game when only third of 6 at Sedgefield last time. Others look better treated. Better over hurdles than on the Flat, third on h'cap debut latest; each-way chance. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
6th (4) (10/1 +75%) Bridgetjoans |
10/1(+75%) | (4) Bridgetjoans 10/1, Looked rusty after 4 months off when pulled up in handicap hurdle (50/1) at Perth and failed to step up on that at Sedgefield a month ago. Two decent handicap seconds earlier in the year but has been disappointing since. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|PU| (5) (8/1 -220%) Mr Le Philosophe |
8/1(-220%) | (5) Mr Le Philosophe 8/1, Fairly useful on Flat in France (stays 1½m), winning 2 handicaps in 2023. Signs of promise in three hurdling outings last winter and, while recent efforts on the level have been poor, he's worthy of interest. Quite useful on the Flat in France; disappointing over hurdles; handicap debut. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|PU| (6) (11/2 +31%) Grifter |
11/2(+31%) | (6) Grifter 11/2, 6/1, eleventh of 14 in handicap hurdle at Newcastle (16.9f, good) 8 days ago. Ran creditably on penultimate outing and warrants respect in a poor race. Good placed efforts at Bangor and Perth but below par last week; could go well. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|PU| (8) (18/1 +55%) Norse Reiver |
18/1(+55%) | (8) Norse Reiver 18/1, Showed little in a brace of bumpers and has fared no better over hurdles to date. Modest form so far, including in handicaps last twice; hard to fancy. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 5 race.
Mr Le Philosophe has shown very little since arriving from France, especially on the Flat the last twice, but it could mean he is dangerously well handicapped. Even so, it would take a big leap of faith to select him so NATIONAL QUESTION, who was a surprise second at Newcastle last week and is well-in here, gets the nod. Grifter is better than he showed in that race, while A Day To Dream offered a bit more encouragement at Sedgefield.
FOREST BLAZE has likely been brought along with handicaps in mind and his opening mark is lenient based on bumper form, so he gets the nod over fellow handicap debutant Mr Le Philosophe. National Question should also be considered after a solid showing at Newcastle 8 days ago.
As National Question lacks consistency the choice is GRIFTER who was in good form before a below-par run at Newcastle last week.

1st (4) (11/1 +21%) Twoplacesatonetime |
11/1(+21%) | (4) Twoplacesatonetime 11/1, Lightly-raced maiden. Respectable seventh of 12 in handicap hurdle over C&D (good) 35 days ago. No forlorn hope with cheekpieces on for the 1st time. Placed in two 3m points; best hurdles run was over 2m; needs to improve for cheekpieces. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
2nd (12) (12/1 0%) Robert D'ores |
12/1(0%) | (12) Robert D'ores 12/1, Still a maiden but he posted a good sixth of 10 in handicap hurdle at Cartmel (25.4f, soft) 109 days ago. Has since had a wind op and not discounted with tongue strap also back on. Winning pointer; 2nd in h'cap chase in 2023; fair hurdles run latest; back after wind op. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
3rd (9) (3/1 +25%) Dequall |
3/1(+25%) | (9) Dequall 3/1, Course winner who comes here on the back of a good second of 12 in handicap hurdle over C&D (good) 35 days ago. This course winner can give another good account in his bid to end a lengthy losing sequence. 3-32 over hurdles; good second off 2lb lower over C&D latest; chance on that form. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
4th (8) (9/2 -50%) Bergentown |
9/2(-50%) | (8) Bergentown 9/2, On a losing run but he posted a very good second of 11 in handicap hurdle at Southwell (24.3f, good to firm) 36 days ago. Has to be taken seriously nudged up 1 lb. 1-23 over hurdles; good run when 2nd on first run at 3m last time; each-way chance. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
5th (11) (15/2 +32%) Lady Hamilton |
15/2(+32%) | (11) Lady Hamilton 15/2, Still a maiden and only eighth of 9 in handicap hurdle at Carlisle (20f, good to soft) 15 days ago. Hard to make a case for. Well beaten after a break last time but has a chance on her C&D third in June. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
6th (10) (28/1 +0%) Atlanticexpress |
28/1(+0%) | (10) Atlanticexpress 28/1, Well held on her debut for Joseph O'Brien at Punchestown in February and has offered little for her current yard, last of seven here (2m4f) 35 days ago. Unexposed; modest form over hurdles, including on h'cap debut latest; more needed. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
7th (1) (33/1 -175%) Jelski |
33/1(-175%) | (1) Jelski 33/1, Back-to-back winner at Cartmel last summer off higher marks but continues to operate below his best this term. Hard to side with. Four-time hurdle winner; below form over fences in the summer; visor tried; bit to prove. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
8th (5) (22/1 -57%) Beat The Boum |
22/1(-57%) | (5) Beat The Boum 22/1, Lightly-raced maiden. 22/1, very good fifth of 16 in handicap hurdle at Kelso (20.9f, good). Off 6 months but possibilities. Irish point 4th; best hurdles run was on h'cap debut (2m5f); down 4lb; quite interesting. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
9th (3) (20/1 -400%) Fainche |
20/1(-400%) | (3) Fainche 20/1, Remains winless following 24 attempts but enede last term in good heart, runner-up in 3m Newcastle handicap in April. Very much one to consider after a lay-off with Brian Hughes back up. Ex-Irish; 0-24; four creditable efforts for new yard; may need the run after a break. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
10th (7) (80/1 -60%) Colonel Manderson |
80/1(-60%) | (7) Colonel Manderson 80/1, Revived in first-time blinkers to cause a surprise over C&D in September 2023. Pulled up all 3 starts since, however, so it's easy to look elsewhere. Won C&D handicap in 2023; pulled up on four of his five runs since; plenty to prove. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
11th (6) (10/3 +72%) Boolamore Classic |
10/3(+72%) | (6) Boolamore Classic 10/3, Modest maiden hurdler. 17/2 and cheekpieces on for 1st time, creditable tenth of 16 in handicap hurdle at this C&D (soft) 6 months ago. Needs to build on it on his return. Irish point second; fair run until unseating 2 out here in March (2m4f); others stronger. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|PU| (2) (18/1 -100%) Dillarchie |
18/1(-100%) | (2) Dillarchie 18/1, Scored at Sedgefield (27f) in February but not easy to catch right since, only sixth over C&D last time. Others appeal more. Won over 3m3f on soft in February; not quite so good since; off since June so may need it. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 5 race.
Fainche proved costly to follow at the end of her last campaign and although she will have her supporters once more, she may need the ground a bit more testing. In contrast, BERGENTOWN has handled a sound surface to occupy the runner-up berth on two of his last three outings and might be able to boost a moderate strike-rate. Dequall also arrives on the back of a second, over C&D last month, and should be in contention again.
BERGENTOWN rates the pick of these weights on the back of his very good Sedgefield second so edges the vote in this very open handicap. The returning Fainche could emerge as the main danger now renuited with Brian Hughes, although Dequall, Twoplacesatonetime and Beat The Boum all need factoring in too.
A chance is taken on LADY HAMILTON who was in good form earlier in the year and should improve for last month's reappearance run.
Ths is the racecard key.
