1st (3) (3/1 +25%) Royal Athena |
3/1(+25%) | (3) Royal Athena 3/1, Fair handicapper on the Flat for Tom Ward. Fifth to Grain of Hope (Limelight fourth) on her Ludlow hurdle debut. Creditable second on AW Flat since. Hooded first time. Showed promise behind Grain Of Hope at Ludlow last month; dangerous back in this sphere. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
2nd (1) (4/7 +22%) Grain Of Hope |
4/7(+22%) | (1) Grain Of Hope 4/7, Half-sister to useful hurdler Zanjabeel and has taken well to hurdling, runner-up twice before going one better at Ludlow (2m, good) last month, with Limelight and Royal Athena behind her. Her claims are obvious. Convincing win at Ludlow last month and she's a big player again under a penalty. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
3rd (4) (20/1 -264%) Zooks |
20/1(-264%) | (4) Zooks 20/1, Fair form on the Flat in France. New connections paid €40,000 for her in July. Very interesting to see what the betting makes of her. No joy on the Flat in France but she needs watching in market on her hurdling/stable debut. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
4th (2) (6/1 -20%) Limelight |
6/1(-20%) | (2) Limelight 6/1, Modest maiden on Flat and has run to a similar level over hurdles, beaten 10½ lengths into fourth behind Grain of Hope at Ludlow (2m) last time. 7 lb better off with that one now but it doesn't look enough. Behind Grain Of Hope in her last two hurdle runs and has work to do to turn the tables. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 4 race.
GRAIN OF HOPE had both Limelight (fourth) and Royal Athena (fifth) behind when winning comfortably at Ludlow last month and, with Dylan Whelan's claim effectively cancelling out the penalty, she is strongly fancied to follow up. Royal Athena has run well on the Flat since that effort and is fitted with a hood today, so she may reverse the form with Stuart Edmunds' charge. French import Zooks will likely step forward from whatever she does on this occasion.
GRAIN OF HOPE had Limelight and Royal Athena behind her when scoring at Ludlow last month so this looks a good chance of her to notch another win unless the betting vibes are strong surrounding Ian Williams French Flat recruit Zooks.
This can go to GRAIN OF HOPE, who had two of today's rivals behind her when justifying support at Ludlow last month.

Sailed Away |
(10) (2/1 +80%)2/1(+80%) | (10) Sailed Away 2/1, Promising in a bumper for Stuart Edmunds. No show in 3 hurdling outings for Alexandra Dunn but has rejoined former stable on handicap/seasonal debut and may well have been let in lightly. Still lightly raced but he needs improvement on his handicap debut; hood removed. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
King Otis |
(9) (5/2 -25%)5/2(-25%) | (9) King Otis 5/2, Landed a gamble starting out for new yard off career-low mark in 2m Plumpton novices' handicap hurdle (good to soft) last month but proved to be a big disappointment under a penalty next time, possibly unsuited by both the quick turnaround and more testing conditions. Bounce back needed. Easy win at Plumpton and he had an excuse in his follow-up bid Stratford; respected. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Ferrybridge |
(4) (5/1 +29%)5/1(+29%) | (4) Ferrybridge 5/1, Didn't show much for Michael Hourigan in Ireland but shaped with greater promise when fourth at Sedgefield (17f) on yard debut. Similar form when fourth at Huntingdon (19.6f, good to soft) 8 days ago but will need to raise his game to register a first success. Ran well for a long way at Huntingdon last time and he could make a bold bid back in trip. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Privatory |
(7) (7/1 +36%)7/1(+36%) | (7) Privatory 7/1, Dual 2m winner but below par in 2022/23 and ran poorly when last seen at Plumpton (15.9f, good to firm) 6 months ago. Plenty to prove for all that his mark is tumbling. On much-reduced mark but he's been unplaced in all eight handicap starts; plenty to prove. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Somekindofstar |
(2) (9/1 +44%)9/1(+44%) | (2) Somekindofstar 9/1, Made a winning start for Charlie Longsdon at Warwick in September 2022 but has failed to reproduce that form since, folding tamely again at Market Rasen when last seen 4 months ago. Joined a new yard and given a chance by the assessor having a rare outing over timber. Has lost his way over fences and has plenty to prove back over hurdles for new yard. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Pure Bubbles |
(3) (18/1 -555%)18/1(-555%) | (3) Pure Bubbles 18/1, Failed to build on promise of his first 2 starts over hurdles when safely held in a Huntingdon maiden on latest start in this sphere last June. Largely struggled on the Flat since and while his mark for this handicap hurdle debut looks fair, he clearly comes with risks attached. 5yo who is unexposed in this sphere and needs checking in market on handicap hurdle debut. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Trusty Scout |
(6) (22/1 -120%)22/1(-120%) | (6) Trusty Scout 22/1, Well held all 3 outings in this sphere back in late-2021 but arrives in good order from the Flat, making it a fourth in-frame finish on the spin at Chelmsford last month. Tough to know what to expect back hurdling, so percentage call is to look elsewhere. Consistent on Flat since May and he's still unexposed over hurdles; one to keep an eye on. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Good Time Ahead |
(5) (22/1 -300%)22/1(-300%) | (5) Good Time Ahead 22/1, Looked better than ever when easily winning a 12-runner handicap hurdle at Lingfield (2m) in February. Reported to have made a noise when last seen over timber and not been in much form on the Flat since (looked rusty at Kempton last month). Headgear discarded. Out of sorts under both codes in his last five runs and has some questions to answer. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 5 race.
A chance is taken on KING OTIS, who was bitterly disappointing when sent off a short-priced favourite at Stratford 11 days ago but fairly bolted up at Plumpton on his penultimate outing. He possibly just got stuck in the mud last time and forecast better ground this afternoon should be a big help. Pure Bubbles makes his handicap debut off a mark of 97 and warrants respect, while Trusty Scout completes the shortlist following a string of decent efforts on the Flat.
He's not been seen over hurdles since late-2020 but SOMEKINDOFSTAR has been given a serious chance by the handicapper, and making his first start for a new yard, Matt Crawley's veteran earns the tentative vote in a open-looking handicap. King Otis seemingly hated the ground at Stratford recently, so he's fancied to get back on track here, with Sailed Away and Pure Bubbles another couple to consider making their handicap debuts.
The vote goes to KING OTIS (nap), who had an excuse at Stratford and still looks feasibly treated on his emphatic win at Plumpton.

Scene One |
(3) (6/4 +14%)6/4(+14%) | (3) Scene One 6/4, Ran to a fair level over hurdles, making all in maiden at Warwick (19f) when last seen in April. Appeals as the type to make a chaser so could do better still as he goes handicapping over fences. Leading contender. Ended last season with a hurdle win and he should have a future over fences; respected. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Unspeakable |
(5) (7/2 +71%)7/2(+71%) | (5) Unspeakable 7/2, Little impact on first 4 starts over hurdles but, in first-time tongue tie, left those efforts behind when winning handicap at Taunton (23.9f) in March. Not in the same form both outings since, though possibly needed the run last month. Makes chase debut. Has been hard to predict so far and he has something to prove on this switch to fences. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Ben Buie |
(4) (7/2 -75%)7/2(-75%) | (4) Ben Buie 7/2, Three-time winner in 2022/23 and returned to form when scoring at Warwick in September. At least as good as ever when following up at Hereford (20.9f) last month, so he's capable of going well again in his current mood. Hat-trick seeker and he's a big player again if ground is on the fast side. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Flamelco |
(1) (10/1 +60%)10/1(+60%) | (1) Flamelco 10/1, Winning hurdler in France but hasn't offered much in a trio of handicaps for his current trainer, failing to beat a rival at Fontwell on his most recent start. Others more persuasive as he goes chasing after 6 months off. Struggled in his three runs in Britain and has plenty to prove on this switch to fences. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Icaque De L'Isle |
(2) (13/2 -86%)13/2(-86%) | (2) Icaque De L'Isle 13/2, Chase winner in France and ran to a similar level on second outing for current yard when runner-up in handicap at Huntingdon (19.7f) on Boxing Day. Lesser effort at Stratford (22.6f) in March, but could get back on track returned to this shorter trip on his return. Ex-French 5yo; has mixed record for current yard and comes with risks attached on return. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Shaw's Cross |
(6) (22/1 -214%)22/1(-214%) | (6) Shaw's Cross 22/1, Gained first success over fences at Plumpton (17f) in January but mixed form since, finishing well held back over hurdles at Newton Abbot in April. Back up in trip returned to chasing on first run for yard after leaving Paul Henderson. Cheekpieces applied. His wins have been at much shorter trips and he looks opposable on return for new yard. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 4 race.
Hat-trick seeking Ben Buie is race-fit and clearly in good heart, but he might be worth taking on with chasing/seasonal debutant SCENE ONE. Lucy Wadham's gelding readily won a good maiden hurdle at Warwick in April (second and third both won since) and he potentially looks a fair bit better than this mark of 106. Icaque De L'isle also has a chance on his best form.
SCENE ONE opened his account over hurdles at Warwick on his final outing last season and he appeals as the type to make up into a better chaser. The 7-y-o can make a winning start over fences on his handicap debut, though Icaque de L'Isle isn't taken lightly back down in trip on his return, while Ben Buie is going through a good spell at present.
This is a tight call between the in-form Ben Buie and SCENE ONE but the vote goes to Lucy Wadham's chase debuntant.

Colonel Whizz |
(3) (4/1 +11%)4/1(+11%) | (3) Colonel Whizz 4/1, Soldier of Fortune gelding who shaped like a stayer when runner-up in bumper at Market Rasen in May. Again looked as if in need of a greater test when sixth of 11 in novice hurdle at Newton Abbot (16.8f, soft, 8/1) on hurdles bow 42 days ago and he's a player now up in trip. Runner-up in sole bumper but he faded on his hurdling debut at Newton Abbot last month. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Cuban Court |
(4) (6/1 -50%)6/1(-50%) | (4) Cuban Court 6/1, Made a winning debut in a 4-runner Fontwell bumper in April 2022 and showed even better form in defeat after a year off when runner-up at Doncaster next time. Beaten long way out when last seen at Kelso but isn't discounted on the strength of his prior efforts. Bumper winner who is out of a triple hurdle winner; interesting on his switch to jumping. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Alright Dai |
(1) (10/1 +17%)10/1(+17%) | (1) Alright Dai 10/1, Made the frame in a trio of bumpers for Dan Skelton but impact over hurdles for this yard has been limited. Step up in trip needs to garner some progress. Second in two bumpers but he's been disappointing in both hurdle runs; now goes up to 2m4f. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Star Legend |
(7) (11/4 +39%)11/4(+39%) | (7) Star Legend 11/4, Fair on the Flat for William Haggas and got back on the up when second of 7 in handicap hurdle at Huntingdon (19.6f, good to soft) 8 days ago. More exposed than most but sets a good standard. Runner-up in 2m3f handicap latest but he's now 0-7 over hurdles and others are preferred. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Shinji |
(6) (13/8 +7%)13/8(+7%) | (6) Shinji 13/8, Looked above average when landing bumper here for Roger Varian (subsequently sold £60,000) last year. Showed promise when second at Stratford (16.3f, good to soft, 4/1) on hurdles bow 35 days ago and may well do better. Placed in a Listed bumper and he made a decent start over hurdles last month; respected. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Our Pink Lady |
(8) (22/1 -267%)22/1(-267%) | (8) Our Pink Lady 22/1, Placed both start over hurdles for Stuart Crawford but offered nothing after 10-month break at Stratford (22f, heavy) 11 days ago. Bit to prove. Showed promise for Stuart Crawford but was pulled up on her recent stable debut. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Melton Mossy |
(5) (33/1 -65%)33/1(-65%) | (5) Melton Mossy 33/1, Valirann gelding. Showed a bit when fourth of 6 in bumper at Sedgefield (16.8f, soft, 17/2) on NH debut 22 days ago. Probably better for run now but others are preferred. Market springer for Sedgefield bumper last month but he finished a well-held fourth of six. |

Stop This Train |
(9) (125/1 -150%)125/1(-150%) | (9) Stop This Train 125/1, Pulled up both starts in maiden hurdles and is impossible to fancy on that evidence. Pulled up in both hurdle runs and can only be watched after another break; hood removed. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Book Of Verse |
(2) (200/1 -100%)200/1(-100%) | (2) Book Of Verse 200/1, Regressive Flat maiden for Henry Spiller has continued to go the wrong way hurdling for this yard. Lowly rated Flat maiden who has been well held in two hurdle runs for current yard. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 4 race.
SHINJI won his only previous visit here by an easy five lengths and, entitled to improve on his reappearance run/hurdles debut at Stratford last month, he looks the one to beat. Cuban Court has shown plenty of promise in the bumper sphere, much like the selection, and he rates a leading player on his jumping bow, while Star Legend also merits consideration following his pleasing runner-up effort at Huntingdon.
SHINJI was a bumper winner here last season and is fancied to build on the promise of his hurdling debut to make it second time lucky over timber. Star Legend ran well in a Huntingdon handicap last time and sets a reasonable standard for his less-experienced opposition to surpass, with Colonel Whizz also a player, the step up in trip appealing as beneficial.
Bumper winner CUBAN COURT is out of a multiple hurdle winner at up to 2m4f and he gets the vote on his switch to jumping.

(3) (3/1 +14%)3/1(+14%) | (3) Mistral Nell 3/1, Cheekpieces on for first time when good second of 4 in handicap hurdle at Fontwell (17.7f) in April. Twice pulled up at Warwick since though for Lucy Wadham. Handily weighted though if the switch to this in-form yard sparks a big resurgence. Bumper winner here in 2021; pulled up last twice but can go well fresh; new yard. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Criquette |
(4) (5/1 +80%)5/1(+80%) | (4) Criquette 5/1, Irish point winner hasn't really gone on from finishing fourth in a 16-runner event at Hereford on hurdles bow this time last year. Struggled on handicap debut in February and needs stable switch from Alex Hales to have sparked some improvement. Won Irish point in 2021; some promise in bumpers; modest hurdle form for A Hales; new yard. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Crem Fresh |
(5) (6/1 -50%)6/1(-50%) | (5) Crem Fresh 6/1, Returned from a lengthy absence with a good second at Hereford in January but failed to back it up there two months later. |||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Malina Jamila |
(1) (6/1 +0%)6/1(+0%) | (1) Malina Jamila 6/1, Listed bumper winner at Huntingdon and also won a hurdle there last May. Has yet to make an impact in handicaps though so has work to do. Bumper and maiden hurdle winner; minor handicap form but more realistically weighted now. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Sinurita |
(6) (9/2 -13%)9/2(-13%) | (6) Sinurita 9/2, Excellent second in handicap hurdle at Bangor (19.6f) in August but pulled up at Fontwell following month. Worth another chance. Improved show when 2nd to an improver in August (2m3f); pulled up when favourite after. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Eliza Dolittle |
(7) (9/1 -29%)9/1(-29%) | (7) Eliza Dolittle 9/1, Lightly-raced maiden who posted her best effort when third of 8 in novice hurdle at Plumpton (15.9f, good to soft) 21 days ago. Up in trip for her handicap debut. One to consider. Looked to have ability when 3rd on latest hurdle run (2m); low mark now handicapping. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Courtney Silver |
(2) (16/1 -129%)16/1(-129%) | (2) Courtney Silver 16/1, Modest form at best in bumpers and matched that form when causing a surprise in 8-runner novice at Fontwell in August. Creditable run there under a penalty but handicapper has taken no chances with opening mark. Improved winner of 2m1f maiden on 2nd hurdle run; stiff task since; handicap debut. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Betty's Belle |
(9) (17/2 -21%)17/2(-21%) | (9) Betty's Belle 17/2, It's now fifteen runs since her last win in 2021 but she wasn't discredited when third of 6 in handicap hurdle at Plumpton (25f, good to soft) 21 days ago. Others are still preferred. Best form for new yard when 3rd over 3m1f latest; minor squeak back at 2m4f. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||

Hooded for yard debut with lots to prove. Quite promising effort in her 2nd handicap but pulled up next time; new yard. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Aurelia Fadilla |
(8) (150/1 -200%)150/1(-200%) | (8) Aurelia Fadilla 150/1, Lightly-raced maiden. Pulled up in handicap hurdle at Stratford (18.7f, good) 65 days ago. Lots more is required. No serious involvement so far; out of weights on handicap debut; correct mark today. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 5 race.
Crem Fresh has proved frustrating with three second places from her last four starts, but she has gone well fresh before. Eliza Dolittle might go well upped in trip after her promising Plumpton third, but preference is for BETTY'S BELLE. She weakened late on into third over three miles plus at Plumpton last month and sits close to the bottom of the weights now over a more suitable trip.
Most of these arrive with a question mark against them so it is worth siding with MISTRAL NELL to take a big step forward now under the expert tutelage of Fergal O'Brien and capitalise on a handy-looking mark. Eliza Dolittle is feared most now going handicapping up in trip, with Sinurita appealing as the pick of the remainder for place purposes.

Allo Allo |
(1) (3/1 +25%)3/1(+25%) | (1) Allo Allo 3/1, Won 2 of his 3 starts over hurdles (both here) last term and scored at Bangor (20.3f, good to firm) on second of his two completed starts in this sphere. Reappearance effort can be overlooked (found to have been suffering from heat stress) and, assuming all is well, he should have a part to play. Bangor winner (2m4f); excuse on seasonal reappearance (PU); 2-2 over hurdles at this track. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Le Tueur |
(6) (6/1 +0%)6/1(+0%) | (6) Le Tueur 6/1, Runnner-up here on first 2 starts of last term prior to opening chase account back from a break at Huntingdon (3m, good to soft) in March. Duly followed up over a marathon trip here next time and, though below par when last seen at Bangor in April, he clearly goes well fresh/at this course. Course form figures read 211; stays & handles soft; more needed on seasonal reappearance.. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Kadex |
(5) (11/8 +45%)11/8(+45%) | (5) Kadex 11/8, Won twice over hurdles in France and, though more miss than hit overall for present connections, he left his chase debut well behind when landing a 4-runner Plumpton handicap (25.7f, good to soft) 3 weeks ago. 4 lb rise by no means the end of world and definite chance if able to back that effort up. Successful over fences at Plumpton (3m2f) three weeks ago; possibilities from 4lb higher.. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Edison Kent |
(3) (13/2 -63%)13/2(-63%) | (3) Edison Kent 13/2, Runner-up twice over hurdles at Worcester in September, but dropped away pretty tamely back in this sphere at Huntingdon recently and his overall profile is far from convincing. Fourth when switching back to fences at Huntingdon last week; peak hurdles RPR's on good.. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
The Vollan |
(4) (15/2 -125%)15/2(-125%) | (4) The Vollan 15/2, Hasn't tasted success since landing a small-field Kelso handicap chase (23.4f, good to firm) last October, now 14 lb below that winning mark and his latest effort suggested that he's working his way back to form. Major player. Well handicapped on peak form, so could prove a threat if granted a soft lead; rain a risk. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Jony Max |
(2) (16/1 -78%)16/1(-78%) | (2) Jony Max 16/1, Winless last season, but went close on a couple of occasions, including over 29f here during the spring. However, he needs to bounce back following a couple of poor efforts and the percentage call is to look elsewhere. No win since summer of 2022; went close though in the Norfolk National (3m5f) here in May.. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 4 race.
Allo Allo pulled up at Stratford, but the vet reported signs of heat stress so it might be best to put a line through that. He has won both starts here, both over hurdles, and could go well. Le Tueur is heading down the handicap to a mark he can go well off, but Plumpton winner KADEX may be the one. He won eased down by close to four lengths that day and an added 4lb may not stop him doubling up.
There was enough in THE VOLLAN's effort at Kelso last month to suggest that he could soon capitalise on the handicapper's mercy (now 14 lb below last winning mark), and the 9-y-o is taken to confirm that impression by striking here. Kadex will be a serious threat if able to at least match the form of his recent Plumpton success, while Le Tueur, whose form figures here read 211, and Allo Allo are also live contenders.
This lacks a standout contender. A chance is taken that THE VOLLAN can exploit a favourable mark after a more encouraging Kelso effort.

With the Fergal O'Brien yard going well, Mistral Blue is hard to ignore, though she will need to step up on her Huntingdon effort in May. CHARMIAN'S PLACE looks the likelier winner after she came home second at Warwick and followed that with a fourth at Worcester, and she may get the better of the unraced Midnight Sting, who is well worth a market check.
CHARMIAN'S PLACE sets a fair standard and is the percentage call, although strong market support for Laura Morgan newcomer Pic The Power would put a slightly different slant on things. Mistral Blue should also be on the premises if returning to the level she showed when fifth on her debut here last spring.
This looks good for CHARMIAN'S PLACE, who shaped with considerable promise when making the frame in her first two races.
Ths is the racecard key.
