1st (1) (13/8 +54%) Skyjack Hijack |
13/8(+54%) | (1) Skyjack Hijack 13/8, Very progressive hurdler, completing 4-timer in 7-runner handicap hurdle at Newcastle (23.7f, good) 8 days ago, unchallenged. Has to concede weight all round but warrants plenty of respect nonetheless. Massive improver in winning four handicaps; penalised accordingly but he's dangerous. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
2nd (3) (7/4 +13%) Captain Bellamy |
7/4(+13%) | (3) Captain Bellamy 7/4, Very easy winner of sole start in Irish points and it was a similar story on his Rules debut in a Chepstow bumper. Disappointing both starts since but should still make his mark over hurdles. Point/bumper winner; has reportedly needed time; well regarded; this isn't strong. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
3rd (4) (10/1 -11%) Check The Score |
10/1(-11%) | (4) Check The Score 10/1, Successful on second of 2 starts in Irish points and made a winning start in bumpers in 17-runner event at Warwick (2m) in April 2023. In need of the experience sent hurdling at Market Rasen 9 months later and is capable of better. Point/bumper winner but well beaten on hurdling debut; looks up against it. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|PU| (5) (7/2 -56%) Jack Black |
7/2(-56%) | (5) Jack Black 7/2, Shaped with promise when third both starts in bumpers and again offered plenty of encouragement when filling same spot on Newbury hurdle debut (16.3f) in February. Upped in trip and can improve. Clear promise in his first three races and going up in trip looks a major plus. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|PU| (6) (25/1 -25%) Super Saint |
25/1(-25%) | (6) Super Saint 25/1, Cost a bit and produced a promising first effort amid inexperience when fourth in a Taunton bumper in March, not knocked about. Failed to progress at Warwick next time but this longer trip likely to suit now hurdling. Bumper form nothing to shout about but he should improve for going further over hurdles. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 3 race.
Skyjack Hijack readily brought up a four-timer when making all over an extended 2m7f at Newcastle last week and he warrants the utmost respect. That said, he may struggle to give weight and a beating to JACK BLACK. Dan Skelton's charge was far from disgraced when finishing a staying-on third in a tactically-run affair on his hurdling debut over an extended 2m at Newbury last season and he gets the nod to make a winning return for his in-form stable. Captain Bellamy is also noteworthy.
CAPTAIN BELLAMY went backwards from an impressive debut success in bumpers, but he retains potential now switching to hurdling and first time up could be the time to catch him. Skyjack Hijack has to concede plenty of weights but he's thriving at present and warrants plenty of respect. Jack Black can build on an encouraging hurdling debut at Newbury 9 months earlier and merits consideration, also.
Captain Bellamy and Skyjack Hijack are the ones he has to beat but JACK BLACK shaped nicely last season behind smart horses.

Yhprum's Law |
(3) (4/1 0%)4/1(0%) | (3) Yhprum's Law 4/1, Kayf Tara gelding who disappointed on his sole outing in bumpers but was in the process of showing more when falling 2 out on his Carlisle hurdling debut 22 days ago, might have been placed. Staying on when tipping up at Carlisle; highly likely that he has better days ahead of him. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
1st (1) (1/4 +59%) Sorceleur |
1/4(+59%) | (1) Sorceleur 1/4, Built on previous promise when making all in a Taunton bumper in February. Put up a useful effort when fifth of 18 in Grade 2 event at Aintree in April and seems sure to improve on his opening hurdles effort when second at this venue in a first-time tongue strap 17 days ago. Outstanding claims. Good bumper horse and fully entitled to come on loads for his recent defeat here. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
2nd (2) (3/1 +0%) Wellington Arch |
3/1(+0%) | (2) Wellington Arch 3/1, Followed narrow Worcester bumper debut success with a couple of decent efforts in defeat. Struggled in Grade 2 company at Aintree when last seen during the spring but starts out over hurdles at a realistic level. Bumper winner but plenty to find with Sorceleur on their Aintree clash in April. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|PU| (4) (66/1 -32%) Kingston Joy |
66/1(-32%) | (4) Kingston Joy 66/1, Modest handicapper on Flat (stays 1½m), respectable effort last time. Left David Simcock's yard for only 6,000 gns in May. Plied her trade at a lowly level on the Flat and shouldn't be good enough. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 2 race.
SORCELEUR showed up well for a long way before fading into second over an extended 2m2f here last month and, stepping back in trip with match-fitness under his belt, he should be tough to stop in his bid to go one place better. Yhprum's Law was in the process of making a solid debut over timber when coming down two from home at Carlisle and he looks the main danger. Kingston Joy will need to improve significantly for obstacles if she is to feature.
SORCELEUR, a progressive bumper performer, seems sure to improve on his opening hurdles effort when second here 17 days ago, so he's a straightforward choice. Wellington Arch is preferred to Yhpum's Law for forecast purposes.
This is an excellent opportunity for smart bumper horse SORCELEUR to make amends for his recent odds-on defeat here.

1st (1) (4/9 -11%) Captain Teague |
4/9(-11%) | (1) Captain Teague 4/9, Third in Champion Bumper and translated all that ability to hurdles last season, winning Persian War at Chepstow and Grade 1 Challow Hurdle at Newbury. Prominent in betting but well held in Albert Bartlett in March but fancied to make his mark on return/chase debut (has had a wind op). Grade 1-winning novice hurdler and chasing was always going to be his game; exciting. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 2 race.
This looks a good opportunity for CAPTAIN TEAGUE to get off the mark at the first time of asking over fences. The form of his Grade 1 Challow Novices' Hurdle victory last December has a strong look to it and it will be no surprise if he is able to take similarly high rank over the larger obstacles. Point-to-point winner Deafening Silence impressed when scoring over 2m4f in a Sandown Grade 2 last term and he merits respect on his chase bow. Daring Plan has plenty to find on ratings and should find easier assignments down the line.
Paul Nicholls has won 4 of the previous 6 renewals of this contest and he can enhance that excellent record further with CAPTAIN TEAGUE, who won half of his 4 starts over hurdles last season (including a Grade 1) and looks very much the type to make an impact in novice chases this term. Progressive hurdler Deafening Silence rates as the obvious danger also making his return/chase bow.
A match on their chasing debuts. CAPTAIN TEAGUE would be conceding 9lb to Deafening Silence in a handicap.

1st (1) (11/4 -22%) Jpr One |
11/4(-22%) | (1) Jpr One 11/4, 3-time hurdles winner who tasted success twice over fences last term, latterly bagging a Lingfield Gr 2 in January. Weakened out of things when seventh in Arkle at Cheltenham in March but this rates more suitable and record fresh is impressive. Tongue strap on/had wind surgery. Grade 2 winner last season and was one of Britain's better novice chasers. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
2nd (2) (7/4 +50%) Djelo |
7/4(+50%) | (2) Djelo 7/4, Won first 3 starts over fences, latterly an Ascot Grade 2 last December. Placed in Golden Miller at Cheltenham prior to a lesser effort in Aintree Grade 1 on final start but he remains low-mileage as a 6-y-o and he commands respect back in handicap/after 6 months off. Classy novice who can deal with this mark in a handicap; stable seems fairly forward. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
3rd (5) (11/2 +15%) Sans Bruit |
11/2(+15%) | (5) Sans Bruit 11/2, Ex-French gelding jumped his rivals into submission from the front in Red Rum handicap at Aintree in April. Ran well to finish third turned out quickly at Ayr later that month and he appeals as the type who has more wins in him this campaign. Impressive winner of a big 2m handicap last season; improving and working well at home. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
4th (6) (15/2 +38%) Scarface |
15/2(+38%) | (6) Scarface 15/2, Thrived over fences when cheekpieces went on, winning 3 times around 2½m between January and April. Feasible to think last month's Cheltenham return effort will have brought him on but yard may well hold stronger claims with Jpr One. Progressive last season but probably needs to go further at this level of competition. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
5th (4) (7/2 +13%) Etalon |
7/2(+13%) | (4) Etalon 7/2, Took his form to a new level sent chasing last season, bringing up the hat-trick with another wide-margin victory in 10-runner Sandown handicap (15.5f) in February. Blunder didn't help his cause upped to Grade 1 level at Aintree in April and he remains the type to do better again this term. 3-4 over fences, the defeat coming in Aintree's Grade 1; retains plenty of potential. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 1 race.
JPR One has progressed nicely over fences, with the seven-year-old landing a Grade 2 at Lingfield in January. The Arkle ended up being a step too far, but the combination of a wind operation and a tongue-tie should aid his cause on his return to action. The vote, though, goes to Turners third DJELO, who has won first time out for the past three seasons and Venetia Williams' gelding appears capable of further progression. Red Rum winner Sans Bruit remains open to improvement, as does Etalon.
ETALON made giant strides forward following his switch to chasing last season, winning 3 times prior to shaping better than the bare result in Grade 1 company on his final start. Still unexposed and retaining potential for better still, he shades the vote on return, with Jpr One, who boasts a smashing record fresh, and Djelo heading up the dangers.
Djelo and JPR One can hold their own at Grade 1 level but Paul Nicholls reckons that SANS BRUIT has a lot more to offer.

It's Easy |
(5) (11/1 -69%)11/1(-69%) | (5) It's Easy 11/1, Fairly useful maiden chaser in France for David Cottin but just respectable efforts at best for Clive Boultbee-Brooks. Down in the weights as a result and sound start for this yard when second at Stratford 3 weeks ago. Positive stable debut on return to hurdles but today's drier ground could pose a problem. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
1st (8) (3/1 +67%) Asian Spice |
3/1(+67%) | (8) Asian Spice 3/1, Landed a brace of 2m course handicaps around this time last year and got back on track when second in 7-runner event at Stratford (16.3f, good) in May. Shaped nicely over C&D last month and she's of major interest. Both wins here, not badly handicapped and her comeback run was encouraging. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
2nd (3) (15/2 +0%) Jaminska |
15/2(+0%) | (3) Jaminska 15/2, Fair winning hurdler who wasn't seen to best effect on last month's return to action, blundering at a crucial stage in what was a slowly-run race. This will reveal more. Fairly handicapped on the pick of last season's form at Taunton; return was only okay. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
3rd (2) (2/1 +27%) Brendas Asking |
2/1(+27%) | (2) Brendas Asking 2/1, Promise in bumpers and easily best effort over hurdles when landing 9-runner handicap at Ludlow a month ago, always holding on. 7 lb rise perfectly fair and she represents yard in excellent form. Good value for her 2l win at Ludlow but faces a much tougher task at these weights. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
4th (6) (11/2 +31%) Micronormous |
11/2(+31%) | (6) Micronormous 11/2, Bumper winner who proved she retains her ability after 16 months off when third in maiden at Worcester (23f, good) in September. Unable to match that form twice since, though this trip might be more suitable than 24.7f latest. Cheekpieces back on. Ability is there to threaten off this mark and cheekpieces tried after two quiet runs. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
5th (4) (16/1 -78%) Versace Twentyone |
16/1(-78%) | (4) Versace Twentyone 16/1, Won a Roscommon bumper for Gordon Elliott in July but has achieved only modest form when hitting the frame in mares' novice hurdles for this yard. Needs to up her game now handicapping. Seems consistent and it wasn't a bad novice for mares in which she ran fourth at Ludlow. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
6th (1) (12/1 +33%) Midnight Ginger |
12/1(+33%) | (1) Midnight Ginger 12/1, Reliable hurdler who went in on only her second run over fences in 2m handicap at Chepstow in January, coming from a long way back. Rather in-and-out since, suffering a heavy defeat returned to timber at Newton Abbot in July. Useful hurdler/chaser but very poor last time and would prefer slower ground. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
7th (7) (6/1 -50%) Miss Goldfire |
6/1(-50%) | (7) Miss Goldfire 6/1, Bumper winner who left her hurdling debut form behind when runner-up in maiden at Worcester in August. Unable to sustain effort when fifth back there (20f, good) last time but she's still one to consider back down in trip on her handicap bow. Bumper winner and second in a maiden; respected on handicap debut, back in trip. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 4 race.
BRENDAS ASKING was value for further than the winning distance when getting off the mark at Ludlow on her return from a break. Kim Bailey's mare is going in the right direction and appears capable of defying a 7lb rise for that success. Versace Twentyone drops back in trip for her handicap debut, which is likely to see her in a better light. It's Easy and Asian Spice complete the shortlist.
ASIAN SPICE won twice at this venue last year and with last month's encouraging return under her belt, she's a solid alternative to Brendas Asking, who will doubtless be popular in the betting as a last-time-out winner. Of the rest, Miss Goldfire could improve now handicapping.
A few with chances but ASIAN SPICE was a winner on this card 12 months ago and history might repeat itself.

1st (2) (7/2 +50%) Tightenourbelts |
7/2(+50%) | (2) Tightenourbelts 7/2, Arrives in decent nick over hurdles, sixth of 17 in handicap at Chepstow (19.4f, good to soft) 27 days ago. Can make his presence felt back in this sphere. Just lost his way of late and this is no easy race in which to bounce back. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
2nd (6) (3/1 +33%) Beachcomber |
3/1(+33%) | (6) Beachcomber 3/1, A dual 25f hurdles winner who made an encouraging start in this sphere when third of 9 in handicap chase at Chepstow (23.6f, good to soft) 28 days ago. Can build on it here so one to consider. Dual hurdle winner; good third on chase debut despite being weak in the market. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
3rd (5) (9/2 +55%) Tea Clipper |
9/2(+55%) | (5) Tea Clipper 9/2, Unreliable sort but he posted a creditable fourth of 9 in handicap chase over C&D (good to soft) 17 days ago. Needs to back it up tried in a visor for the 1st time. 1-17 over fences and fluffed some very winnable opportunities last season. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
4th (8) (10/3 +72%) Striking A Pose |
10/3(+72%) | (8) Striking A Pose 10/3, Course winner who resumed with an encouraging third of 13 in handicap hurdle here (23.1f, good to soft) 17 days ago. Very much one to consider now back chasing. Goes in against rivals with greater scope for improvement in this discipline. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
5th (4) (9/2 +36%) Egbert |
9/2(+36%) | (4) Egbert 9/2, A dual chase winner at up to 3m last season who was pulled up in Scottish Grand National at Ayr (31.8f, good to soft) final run. Not ruled out back in trip for his return. Can look a hard ride at times but return of the visor could help and he goes well fresh. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|PU| (3) (28/1 +15%) Jeremy Pass |
28/1(+15%) | (3) Jeremy Pass 28/1, A fairly useful ex-Irish 3m chase winner but he was pulled up in conditions event at Pardubice (34.3f, good) 26 days ago on his yard debut. Tongue strap back on with lots more required. Capable handicapper on his day; latest run forgiven in the Velka Pardubicka. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 3 race.
Having found only the 142-rated Hometown Boy just too strong in a novice event at Worcester, compensation could be on the cards for COCO MADEMOISELLE on this switch to handicap company. That was the six-year-old's seasonal/chase debut and a mark of 122 looks more than workable. Tea Clipper has fallen down to an attractive mark and isn't taken lightly in a first-time visor. Tom Lacey's charge is feared most, ahead of the returning Egbert.
A case can be made for a few of these but COCO MADEMOISELLE starts life in handicaps on an attractive mark so looks the way to go. Course-winner Striking A Pose rates the main threat to Dan Skelton's progressive sort, with Tightenourbelts, Beachcomber and Wiseguy all in the mix too in this competitive handicap.
This is a good handicap but a chance is taken on WISEGUY (nap), who ran his best race last season here on his comeback run.

1st (1) (10/1 +38%) Magic Seven |
10/1(+38%) | (1) Magic Seven 10/1, Scored a couple of times at Hereford last season but essentially disappointing in handicaps since. Something to prove. Struggles continued last time at Hereford and he usually goes well there. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
2nd (9) (5/2 +17%) Sunninghill |
5/2(+17%) | (9) Sunninghill 5/2, Fair form when making the frame in AW minor events on Flat in 2022 and showed something to work on both starts over hurdles, notably when third at Uttoxeter a month ago. Worth a chance to make a winning handicap debut. Beaten by the right horses at Uttoxeter; connections soon turn his sights to handicaps. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
3rd (6) (16/1 -45%) Iris Des Issards |
16/1(-45%) | (6) Iris Des Issards 16/1, Ex-pointer who is still unexposed as a hurdler and took a forward step when runner-up at Taunton 7 months ago. Will probably need this first outing since, though. Has a race in him off this mark, though does seem well suited by soft ground. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
4th (5) (11/1 -38%) Zodiac Star |
11/1(-38%) | (5) Zodiac Star 11/1, Winner in hurdle at Stratford in July. 8/1, good second of 9 in handicap hurdle at Ludlow (15.8f, good) 30 days ago, staying on well. Not fully exposed and still seems to be getting better. Stayed on into second at Ludlow and today's stiffer track promises to suit. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
5th (8) (14/1 +44%) Impecunious |
14/1(+44%) | (8) Impecunious 14/1, Has shown a fair level of form at best over hurdles but doesn't look the most straightforward and recent handicap debut was underwhelming. Others make more appeal. Interesting on his good-ground novice form; soft perhaps no good on recent handicap debut. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
6th (3) (13/2 -63%) King Of The Road |
13/2(-63%) | (3) King Of The Road 13/2, Latest win in hurdle at Market Rasen in April. Respectable fourth of 13 in handicap hurdle at Huntingdon (19.6f, good, 3/1). Off 6 months. In-form yard should have him tuned up and he may be able to resume progress. Upwardly mobile earlier this year and he wouldn't be exposed just yet. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
7th (11) (9/2 +63%) Final Entry |
9/2(+63%) | (11) Final Entry 9/2, Made a winning start over hurdles in a juvenile at Newton Abbot in July and was back on track when third there a couple of months ago. Interesting handicap debutant getting chunks of weight for age. Latest 3rd in a juvenile is working out fine; has to be of interest with 3yo allowance. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
8th (4) (18/1 -13%) Sergeant |
18/1(-13%) | (4) Sergeant 18/1, Resumed winning ways in no uncertain terms at Newton Abbot (16.7f) in August but next effort was tame and he refused to race at Wincanton last time, so seemingly going the wrong way in terms of temperament. Capable handicapper but his refusal to race at Wincanton sets the alarm bells ringing. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|PU| (2) (7/2 -5%) Centara |
7/2(-5%) | (2) Centara 7/2, 9/4 and hooded for 1st time, career best when winning 9-runner handicap hurdle at Taunton (19f, good), running on. Off 6 months. Remains with the scope for better based on bumper form. Taunton win has worked out well and 4lb rise won't be beyond him if returning in top order. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|PU| (12) (28/1 +15%) Alkhattaaf |
28/1(+15%) | (12) Alkhattaaf 28/1, Just modest form at best over hurdles and, while still unexposed, he's hard to make a strong case for returning from such a lengthy absence. Dual Flat winner; well held in two handicap hurdles and has been off a good while. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 4 race.
The fitting of a first-time hood seemed to work the trick for CENTARA when landing the spoils at Taunton in April. Paul Nicholls' six-year-old has since undergone a wind procedure and, given the recent upturn in form of the yard's runners, he could make light work of a 4lb higher mark on his return to action. Zodiac Star offered plenty of encouragement when second at Ludlow and another prominent role is forecast. King Of The Road may fare best of the remainder.
SUNNINGHILL was fair on the Flat and showed the benefit of his hurdling debut when an encouraging third in a novice at Uttoxeter last time, so he's worth a chance to make a successful early switch to handicaps from a potentially favourable mark. Juvenile Final Entry is an obvious threat and Centara is worthy of interest.
Difficult. A chance is taken on I HAVE A VOICE in the hope that he can tap back into his early promise on the back of wind surgery.
Ths is the racecard key.

Horse racing is a popular and historic sport in the UK, with a tradition dating back centuries. It is a multi-billion pound industry that attracts millions of spectators each year and generates significant economic activity.
There are two main types of horse racing in the UK: flat racing and jump racing. Flat racing is run on a level course and is typically shorter in distance, while jump racing involves horses jumping over obstacles and is generally longer in distance. Both types of racing are popular with spectators and bettors, and they take place at various racetracks throughout the country.
The most famous horse racing event in the UK is the Grand National, which is held annually at Aintree Racecourse in Liverpool. It is a jump racing event that is known for its challenging course and has become a national institution in the UK. Other notable horse racing events in the UK include the Derby, held at Epsom Downs Racecourse in Surrey, and the Royal Ascot, held at Ascot Racecourse in Berkshire.
Horse racing in the UK is regulated by the British Horseracing Authority (BHA), which sets rules and standards for the industry. It is responsible for the welfare of racehorses and the safety of jockeys and trainers, as well as ensuring fair and transparent racing practices.
In addition to its economic and cultural importance, horse racing in the UK also plays a significant role in the breeding and training of thoroughbred horses. Many of the world's top thoroughbreds are bred and trained in the UK, and the industry plays a vital role in the preservation and promotion of the breed.
Overall, horse racing is an integral part of British culture and a major contributor to the country's economy. It is a thrilling and exciting sport that continues to attract a loyal following and generate significant interest from spectators and bettors around the world.
