Very much one to consider despite a lay-off. C&D winner but he might be on a toughish mark and lacks a recent run.

Stuck to her task pretty well when fifth starting out for new yard at Bangor in October (23.2f) and also rallied to the cause when third at Hereford a month ago. Should be on the premises again. Returning to a more galloping track should help matters as she does nothing in a hurry.

1 5th (1) (10/1 -82%) Longshanks	10 10/1(-82%)	(1) Longshanks 10/1, Hasn't won under Rules for quite some time but held form well off similar marks over hurdles last term. Second in a 3-runner point in November, so shouldn't be found wanting fitness-wise on this seasonal reappearance and and this veteran is worth considering. Competitive mark but now 11 and perhaps vulnerable to younger limbs.

Lightly raced and little to shout about since. Returns to a more suitable trip but the jury is out after his latest efforts.

Progress has come to a halt in handicaps, though, weakening before stamina for 26f was tested when last seen in May (first-time cheekpieces). Novice winner but has struggled to land any significant blow in her three handicaps.

13:08 Exeter Handicap Hurdle (Class 4) 23f Race Class Flow

PIPERS CROSS built on her fifth-placed stable debut at Bangor when hitting the frame at Hereford last month. Emma Lavelle's mare was 28 lengths clear of the fourth that day and she makes plenty of appeal racing off an unchanged mark. Jack Sprat arrives on the back of fair fourth over fences at Huntingdon and he's feared most reverting to timber. Course winner Longshanks is also worth a second look.

JACK SPRAT didn't improve as may have been expected over fences but he figures on a tempting mark returned to timber for a yard in good order. He receives the vote in favour of Pipers Cross and Mister Barclay (on his return to action).

The mare PIPERS CROSS has performed no more than okay in two races for Emma Lavelle but she's a grafter and will enjoy this track.

Poor effort at Newbury next time but took a step back in the right direction at this track (18.5f, soft) since. Others more appealing on chase debut. Not badly treated on peak hurdle form; perhaps lacks the same potential as some of these.

Has all the hallmarks of a useful chaser and, despite departing early on return at Carlisle in November, gave a suggestion after 7 months off that that will prove the case. Remains an exciting prospect. Smart novice hurdler; rather unlucky to come down on chase debut; lots of potential.

Low-key return/chasing debut here but opened his account in this sphere at the second attempt albeit fortuitously at Market Rasen (17.2f, good to soft) on Boxing Day. Now 4 lb higher. More needed than at Market Rasen but the potential is there to rate higher.

Ran well next time, then pulled up in Prestige Novices' at Haydock 11 months ago. Notable chasing debutant on return. Progressive hurdler and had excuses the final time; improvement to come now chasing.
5 \|F\| (5) (9/1 +55%) Astronomic View	9 9/1(+55%)	(5) Astronomic View 9/1, Wide-margin success at Warwick (26f, heavy) in March did his mark no favours but ran creditably after 7 months off when third at Newton Abbot (21.5f) in October. Struggled in stronger company the last twice and now attentions are turned to the larger obstacles. Yard form a worry. Edged back down the weights ahead of this chasing debut but others are more intriguing.
6 \|PU\| (6) (100/1 +50%) Wellwillya	100 100/1(+50%)	(6) Wellwillya 100/1, Took form up a notch when getting off the mark on chasing bow in 12-runner handicap chase here in October. Not in the same form at Hereford next time but took a step back in the right direction when fourth over C&D last month. Faces a struggle from miles out of the weights here. Has won here over fences but he's a mile out of the weights on this occasion.

13:38 Exeter Handicap Chase (Class 3) 19f Race Class Flow

Although he made it no further than the fifth fence on his chase/seasonal bow at Carlisle 63 days ago, it is too soon to write off Pic Roc in this discipline. However, DENEMETHY scored on his second attempt over fences at Market Rasen on Boxing Day and that experience could prove crucial. Issam and Alcedo are making their debuts over the larger obstacles and neither can be discounted.

PIC ROC may have departed early on his return/chase debut at Carlisle, but he has all the hallmarks of a useful chaser and is fancied to make amends provided he's none the worse from that spill. The main danger may emerge from Alcedo, who hasn't been seen since being pulled up in the Prestige Novices' at Haydock 11 months ago but rates as a notable chasing debutant for Venetia Williams. Denemethy, who was a fortunate winner last time, completes the shortlist.

Ben Pauling has a strong hand in this division and PIC ROC can join the party by making amends for his unlucky fall at Carlisle.

Made a promising start to his hurdle career for top new stable when second of 11 over 21f at Warwick (soft) last month. Leading claims with improvement likely. Sets the standard on his second at Warwick and there's surely more to come.

Went off at 33-1 for hurdling debut here over 2m and never played a part.

Dam fairly useful 19f/21f hurdle winner (stayed 3m). Successful sole outing in point bumpers in February but proved too free to show a great deal in a course bumper during the spring. Moved yards. Point bumper winner; too keen when third in a bumper here (went off favourite).

Dam unraced half-sister to fairly useful 2m hurdle winner Duty. Too green to show much in a course bumper. It wasn't a bad junior bumper in which he plugged on into mid-division here in October.

Big price but displayed some ability when mid-field in a Chepstow bumper in January 2024 but never really involved on last month's hurdles bow. Tailed off in a bumper for previous yard and in a maiden hurdle for current one.

Also runner-up on sole start in Irish points so can take a step forward. Beaten 22l in a maiden for mares at Wincanton and has to step up by quite a bit.

Placed in two points but instantly opposable on what she's shown under rules.

Muinor impact in a Newbury bumper a year ago and since left Alan King. Beaten just under 20l in a Newbury bumper 12 months ago (soft) having raced keenly.
7 \|PU\| (7) (2/1 +67%) Roe And Co	2 2/1(+67%)	(7) Roe And Co 2/1, Fetched £58,000 after landing a maiden point in November 2023 and it will be very interesting to see how he shapes up in the betting ahead of this Rules debut having undergone a wind op. Irish point winner in late 2023 and the second is now a very useful hurdler.

AS THE FELLA SAYS proved too keen when weakening into second on his Rules debut over 2m5f at Warwick last month. The Soldier Of Fortune gelding should appreciate this stiff 2m1f trip and a breakthrough victory in this sphere looks imminent. Saint Anapolino has hit the frame on both outings over hurdles to date and the six-year-old is feared most, ahead of point-to-point winner Roe And Co.

Point-winner AS THE FELLA SAYS made a promising start to his Rules career when runner-up at Warwick a month ago and with this drop in trip not expected to be a problem, he can go one place better. With Saint Anapolino looking far from straightforward last time, Roe And Co could emerge as the chief threat.

Nicky Henderson's AS THE FELLA SAYS drops back to 2m from 2m5f but on a stiff track and in a very winnable maiden.

Hard to recommend. All or nothing for previous yard and he ran a quiet first race on debut for this one.
1 2nd (1) (3/1 -50%) Illico De Cotte	3 3/1(-50%)	(1) Illico De Cotte 3/1, Irish point/maiden hurdle winner who showed much-improved form when making a winning chase debut at Carlisle (3¼m, good to soft) in October. Performed to a similar level when third off 7 lb higher at the same course last month and this 7-y-o remains with potential as a chaser. Made a bright start over fences and latest Carlisle form has worked out well.
8 3rd (8) (7/1 +36%) Neo King	7 7/1(+36%)	(8) Neo King 7/1, Multiple point winner and second in a hunter chase at Down Royal last March. Changed hands for £20,000 and while he hasn't troubled the judge in 3 starts over hurdles for present connections, it would be no surprise at all were he to take a big step forward on this handicap chase debut. Hasn't been offering a lot over hurdles but this should be more his game.
6 \|PU\| (6) (9/2 +25%) Pachacuti	4.5 9/2(+25%)	(6) Pachacuti 9/2, Wincanton winner on final start last season and all the better for his reappearance spin when going close at that course early last month. By no means disgraced with first-time blinkers (retained) replacing cheekpieces when fourth of 11 over this C&D (soft) since and he has to enter calculations. Below par in new blinkers here last time and those aids are persevered with.
3 \|PU\| (3) (9/1 +10%) Broomfield Present	9 9/1(+10%)	(3) Broomfield Present 9/1, Useful hurdler (2-3 in that sphere) and promising start over fences when third in a C&D handicap on his seasonal reappearance last term. Things haven't gone to plan since, though, failing to complete on 3 of his 4 subsequent chase starts (well held on the occasion that he did get round). Had some misfortune over fences but lightly raced and conditions won't faze him.
4 \|PU\| (4) (10/3 +26%) Livin On Luco	3.333333 10/3(+26%)	(4) Livin On Luco 10/3, onsistent rather than progressive over hurdles and bettered that form, albeit somewhat fortuitously, when making a winning start over fences at Newton Abbot on return in October. It was a pretty strong race in which he struggled at Cheltenham next time and it's still early days for him as a chaser. Solid run of form ended at Cheltenham; can be given another chance back in the mud.
2 \|PU\| (2) (12/1 +14%) Feivel	12 12/1(+14%)	(2) Feivel 12/1, Dual hurdles winner here last term and ran a stormer back chasing in the Southern National on return at Fontwell in November. However, he posted a poor effort reverting to the smaller obstacles at Calisle since and is currently 11 lb above the mark off which he gained his sole chase success. Capable performer on his day but has become hard to predict over hurdles and fences.
5 \|PU\| (5) (20/1 -82%) Imperial Alex	20 20/1(-82%)	(5) Imperial Alex 20/1, Really found the winning habit in the spring, completing the hat-trick with a narrow success in a Class 2 Uttoxeter handicap in May. However, he has failed to shine in 2 subsequent starts (both at Uttoxeter) and now finds himself with a point to prove. Hat-trick last year but disappointing in his last two races.

ILLICO DE COTTE has improved for the switch to the larger obstacles with a victory at Carlisle in October backed up with a placed effort at the same venue last month. The seven-year-old remains unexposed in this discipline and appears to have been found an excellent opportunity to strike. The return to a softer surface may be in the favour of Livin On Luco having struggled at Cheltenham last month, while Southern National runner-up Feivel completes the shortlist.

It's highly likely that NEO KING's mark for this handicap chase debut seriously underestimates him and this multiple point winner shades preference ahead of the Illico de Cotte, who has taken well to fences and remains open to improvement in this sphere. Pachacuti hasn't done much wrong since switched to the larger obstacles and he is best of the rest.

He has a lot of weight but ILLICO DE COTTE (nap) has raised his game over fences and the third at Carlisle reads all the better now.

Wasn't in the same form at Chepstow since but there's a good chance that she will take to fences and, if that proves to be the case, this 8-y-o will have a chance. Mark hit hard for recent win over hurdles but she's bred to make a chaser.
6 2nd (6) (10/3 +76%) Valirann Gold	3.333333 10/3(+76%)	(6) Valirann Gold 10/3, Fair chaser who didn't run badly when third at Fontwell (17.8f, soft) on Boxing Day and he faces a stiff task from 8 lb out of the weights. Finds winning hard and that will again be the case here from 8lb out of the weights.
1 3rd (1) (8/1 -100%) Mr Grey Sky	8 8/1(-100%)	(1) Mr Grey Sky 8/1, Won a pair of 2m handicap chases in the early stages of last season but found things tougher in the second half of that campaign and reappearance effort at Ludlow lacked spark. Needs to bounce back. Presence of a fellow front-runner did him no favours on his comeback at Ludlow.
2 4th (2) (7/1 -180%) Doyouknowwhatimean	7 7/1(-180%)	(2) Doyouknowwhatimean 7/1, Scored in the mud at Lingfield and Stratford last winter and ran creditably after 8 months off when third at Newton Abbot in October. Followed that with a poor effort (shaped as though amiss) at Chepstow but it wouldn't be any great surprise were he to get back on track here. Every chance provided he can bounce back from a miserable run at Chepstow.
3 5th (3) (10/1 -43%) Golden Whisky	10 10/1(-43%)	(3) Golden Whisky 10/1, This mark is a lenient one judged on what he showed a couple of seasons back and there were some positives to take from his second run of the present campaign at Leicester where he was third in a 6-runner handicap. However, failed to build on that at the same course recently. Not in bad form after an absence but doesn't look a winner waiting to happen.
4 \|PU\| (4) (4/1 -33%) Polisud	4 4/1(-33%)	(4) Polisud 4/1, Fairly useful hurdle/chase winner in France who took advantage of his falling mark in a Newcastle handicap hurdle last spring. Has made the frame all 3 subsequent starts (all over hurdles), including on return/debut for new yard at Lingfield, and he is of strong interest back chasing here. Respectable first run for this yard but does look a shade high in the weights.
7 \|PU\| (7) (11/1 +78%) I Love You Sivola	11 11/1(+78%)	(7) I Love You Sivola 11/1, French recruit who has essentially struggled for this yard and easy to oppose from out of the handicap. 1-35; struggles to get competitive these days and he's 13lb out of the weights.

MR GREY SKY was let down by his jumping when returning at Ludlow in November and the handicapper has given him a chance by dropping him 3lb. Softer ground is likely to aid his cause in what looks to be a winnable contest on paper. Doyouknowwhatimean pulled up at Chepstow last month but isn't one to underestimate, while Polisud is of interest judged on his chase form in France.

POLISUD was sold out of Micky Hammond's yard for only £4,000 but shaped with encouragement on his reappearance for new connections in a Lingfield handicap hurdle last month and makes plenty of appeal with that run under his belt now back over fences. Multiple hurdles winner Passing Kate could be the one to follow the selection home, granted a clear round on this chase debut, while Doyouknowwhatimean is also accorded respect, despite misfiring at Chepstow recently.

Without a one-dimensional front-runner to steal his thunder this time, a chance is taken on MR GREY SKY returning to form.

Shortlisted. Dual course winner but finished weakly here 25 days ago, beaten about 17l.

1 6th (1) (9/2 +55%) Push To Pass	4.5 9/2(+55%)	(1) Push To Pass 9/2, Lightly-raced maiden who came in only eleventh of 17 on his handicap debut at Chepstow (19.4f, good) 52 days ago. Needs a big step forward. Quiet handicap debut at Chepstow but his yard's horses have turned a corner recently.
4 7th (4) (9/1 +10%) Chauffeur Driven	9 9/1(+10%)	(4) Chauffeur Driven 9/1, Still a maiden hurdler but he posted a respectable third of 11 in handicap hurdle over C&D (heavy) 12 days ago. Merits consideration off an easing mark. Merely plodded on past beaten horses for his remote third over C&D 12 days ago (soft).

Much his best run for current yard when resuming from 11-month absence with excellent second of 11 in handicap hurdle over C&D (heavy) 12 days ago. Weighted to go close off an unchanged mark. Second here on New Year's Day after an absence; not guaranteed to build on that.

WILLIAM PHILO outran huge odds to finish a promising second over C&D last time out and he can prove that was no fluke by going one better off the same mark. That may be at the main expense of two-time course winner Sindabella, and Olivia Kate, who has strong claims on the form of her Ludlow success two starts back. Others to note include Chauffeur Driven, Coconut Twist and Newtonian.

Not as competitive as the numbers suggest and WILLIAM PHILO looks the way to go on the back of his excellent recent C&D second. Chauffeur Driven is another weighted to have a big say and next on the list ahead of Sindabella and Bobby's Fortune.

Wide open. With his yard back in better form now, a chance is taken that PUSH TO PASS can run better than on his handicap debut.

In what could be an informative bumper, a tentative vote goes to newcomer UPTOWN DANDY, who is a half-brother to talented Grade 2 winner Bill Joyce. The Ben Pauling stable knows how to ready one first time out and he may have too much for fellow debutants Limerick Lass and Scorpio Rising. An easy winner at Uttoxeter last April, Realco is another to consider on his first run for the Dan Skelton team.

UPTOWN DANDY is a half-brother to a dual winner in this sphere and represents an excellent stable, so he gets the marginal vote on debut ahead of Realco, who was last seen in April scoring readily for a different yard. Scoprio Risin is another notable newcomer.

Form choice REALCO is the selection but allow for flexibility as any strong market moves among the remainder should be heeded.
