(5) Paws For Thought 2.75/1, Hasn't won for a long time but posted several creditable efforts in defeat last term and reappearance third over this C&D (heavy) was encouraging. Subsequently went off too hard back here and definite chance from stall 3 provided the ground isn't on the fast side. Has undergone a wind op.
Good overall record here; weakened in Class 2 latest but this easier; had wind op; player.

(3) Maywake 4.5/1, Winless since bagging a big-field York handicap on reappearance last season but has performed with plenty of credit all 4 starts this time round, not least when third at Beverley (7.4f, good to firm) last time. Mark unchanged and should be on the premises once more.
Placed in competitive handicaps on all four starts this year; should go well again.

(10) Mabre 10/1, Bagged third win of 2023 in 1m handicap at Newbury in May before posting a solid second of 8 at Bath later that month. By no means disgraced under back up to 1¼m last time but others make more appeal on this occasion.
1m winner last month; never dangerous over 1m2f latest but this is more his trip.

Dolly Gray

11
11/1(+31%)
(7) Dolly Gray 11/1, Improved form back on turf in recent weeks, doing the job well from the front at Nottingham (6f, firm) prior to going down narrowly off 5 lb higher over the same C&D 8 days later. Return to this trip shouldn't be an issue and, along with Metabolt, she's one of two live contenders for her yard.
In good form from the front over 6f recently but not obviously crying out for return to 7f.

(4) Brasil Power 22/1, Resumed winning ways upon rejoining this yard at Wolverhampton (7f) in May and better than the bare result dropped to 6f there last time. Step back up in trip will help and equipped with first-time cheekpieces but it could be that he's simply a better horse on the AW.
Contender on two AW runs for this yard but not at best on turf in between; cheekpieces on.

King Cabo

3.5/1(+42%)
(8) King Cabo 3.5/1, Opened turf account at Lingfield (7f, good to firm) on penultimate start and seemingly raised his game when a close third off this 4 lb higher mark at Newbury next time. Remains unexposed on turf and needs considering from a handy draw.
Arrives in form after win and third over this trip in recent weeks; well drawn; claims.

(2) Danzan 5/1, Won twice last season, including the Ayr Bronze Cup in September, and back on the scoresheet with a strong front-running display at Thirsk (7f, soft) 10 days ago. 4 lb penalty unlikely to be a barrier to success here but stall 11 could prove problematic.
Made all by 3l at Thirsk last week; harder to pull off similar tactics here from stall 11.

Hard to fancy on his two comeback runs this month.

(11) Voltaic 25/1, Losing run mounting up and while he's by no means handicapped out of things, despite being 1 lb 'wrong' at the weights, the percentage call is to look elsewhere.
Not at best on AW earlier in year but back on a workable mark if reviving after a break.

(6) Starshiba 16/1, Multiple AW winner during the winter and added to his tally at Newcastle (7f) in March. Decent third at Wetherby (1m, good to firm) last time but this is more competitive and, moreover, his record on turf stands at 0-20.
Five-time AW winner but took turf record to 0-20 when third at Wetherby latest.
LTO Selection:

17:40 Chester Handicap (Class 4) 7f Race Class Flow

The chart reads from right to left to today's class 4 race.

METABOLT has had a fine time of it so far this season, winning on both starts at Haydock and Windsor, and David Loughnane's gelding is taken to handle the 5lb penalty incurred for the most recent success. Tim Easterby always merits respect in these contests and recent Thirsk scorer Danzan merits a place on any shortlist. Although Brasil Power was a shade disappointing went sent off a short price favourite at Wolverhampton earlier this month, the first-time cheekpieces might aid his cause.

METABOLT displayed a nice turn of foot to quicken from last to first in a steadily-run race at Windsor and, with the possibility of more to come from this relatively lightly-raced 4-y-o, he is taken to complete the hat-trick. Next on the list is Paws For Thought, who probably wouldn't want fast ground but is otherwise appealing given his course form and handy mark. King Cabo is another to consider, along with Metabolt's stablemate Dolly Gray, but Danzan hasn't been done any favours by the draw.

This is easier than the course Class 2 PAWS FOR THOUGHT contested last time and he can make a successful return from wind surgery.

18:15 Chester Maiden (Class 4) 7f Race Class Flow

The chart reads from right to left to today's class 4 race.

No previous form on offer so the betting market will be most informative. Charlie Johnston and Franny Norton are no strangers to having winners at this track and, receiving weight all-round, QUICK AWAY may just be the answer in what looks a tricky affair. Wootton's Jewel is out of a Listed winner and commands respect, while Rukaana, a son of Dark Angel who was purchased for 60,000gns in October, completes the shortlist.

A race restricted to newcomers, and the market will offer valuable clues, but Timeform's provisional ratings for debutants point towards WOOTTON'S JEWEL, Quick Away and Timebar and they are preferred in that order.

In a newcomers race where the betting will guide the vote goes to RUKAANA, whose stable has had a few 2yo debut scorers in 2023.

LTO Selection:

18:50 Chester Seller (Class 4) 7f Race Class Flow

The chart reads from right to left to today's class 4 race.

On Borrowed Time is turned out quickly again after making a winning debut at Redcar last week and can be considered. However, MIMI KAKUSHI was a neck behind him that day when an odds-on favourite and is fancied to reverse those placings with first-time cheekpieces applied. Up The Jazz was narrowly denied in similar company at York a fortnight ago and has shaped like this extra furlong can bring out further improvement.

ON BORROWED TIME is the only previous winner in the field and can defy a penalty to remain unbeaten after edging out Mimi Kakushi at Redcar last week. George Boughey's filly has the widest draw to overcome but is unlikely to be far away again now fitted with headgear. Up The Jazz went very close in the valuable York seller a fortnight ago and has obvious claims if coping with the longer trip.

The step up to 7f should play to the strengths of UP THE JAZZ, who is preferred to last week's Redcar second Mimi Kakushi.

The chart reads from right to left to today's class 4 race.

The majority of these have questions to answer at present and it may pay to take a chance on handicap debutant TAJALAT. Roger Varian's filly has posted three creditable efforts to date and her opening mark of 74 looks workable. Metahorse may find some improvement from a change of scenery and is another to consider, while Chasseral could appreciate this stiffer test and is also of interest.

It may pay to side with METAHORSE starting out for a yard among the winners from an inside stall. At the other end of the weights, Pearly Star has a bigger performance in her, with Hey Lyla another to consider.

An open handicap. The suggestion is CHASSERAL, who has been contesting stronger handicaps.

20:00 Chester Handicap (Class 3) 10f Race Class Flow

The chart reads from right to left to today's class 3 race.

Sparks Fly recorded a four-timer last month at Windsor, but the handicapper hasn't reacted kindly and David Loughnane's three-year-old may be worth taking on now 10lb higher in the ratings. MARKET VALUE was value for further when gaining a breakthrough success in a maiden at Ripon in May and makes most appeal on this opening bid in handicaps. Wind In Your Sails boasts a similar profile and is a viable alternative.

MARKET VALUE looks to start life in handicaps on an attractive mark so this upwardly-mobile daughter of Siyouni makes plenty of appeal. Ralph Beckett's Sea The Stars filly also has better days ahead of her though and rates a big threat to William Haggas' filly on her handicap debut too. Dubai Crystal and Sparks Fly also need factoring into an intriguing handicap.

Low-mileage 3yo MARKET VALUE (nap) was nicely on top in a Ripon maiden last time and can follow up on handicap debut.

(5) Noodle Mission 14/1, Improved for a step up in trip earlier this year, winning twice at Wolverhampton. Has the scope for better still, so capable of featuring if he's as effective on turf after 4 months off.
Won two AW h'caps early in year; further progress not ruled out now on turf after break.

(2) Tajawal 2.25/1, Placed on his first three runs and didn't need to improve to readily open his account (at the expense of Lil' Frank) at Ayr last time. More to come returned to this distance for handicap debut, and he makes plenty of appeal.
Made it fourth time lucky when readily beating Lil' Frank in Ayr maiden; handicap debut.

20:30 Chester Handicap (Class 4) 10f Race Class Flow

The chart reads from right to left to today's class 4 race.

An open-looking handicap on paper, but the nod goes to BALANCE PLAY. Ralph Beckett's charge was a good third in the Lester Piggott Handicap at Epsom last time and a repeat of that effort entitles him to great respect from these rivals. Last-time-out winner Tajawal appears to be the biggest danger after his success over 1m at Ayr, while Theme Park should also be challenging based on his recent second at York.

TAJAWAL shaped well amidst greenness when third at Wolverhampton on his seasonal comeback and he's since got off the mark in comfortable fashion at Ayr. A bigger performance is expected and he's preferred to Balance Play, who arrives on the back of a solid showing at Epsom. Gordon Grey is another likely improver on his first go in handicaps.

An interesting 3yo handicap. BALANCE PLAY has had the form of his Epsom handicap debut third boosted so he gets the vote.

LTO Selection:

21:00 Chester Handicap (Class 5) 5f Race Class Flow

The chart reads from right to left to today's class 5 race.

ECCLESIASTICAL was a good winner over 5f at Ripon last time out and is fancied to follow up that success. Tristan Davidson's runner scored by two lengths on that occasion and has a 5lb penalty, but the fact he boasts a low draw in stall 2 can only be an advantage to him. Therehegoes should pose the biggest threat after just being touched off over 5f at Lingfield, while Albegone completes the shortlist.

ECCLESIASTICAL had slid down the weights for his former yard but got off the mark for Tristan Davidson at the second attempt last time and can follow up under a penalty here. Soul Seeker has often contested stronger company than this and is most feared after a couple of good efforts, with Astapor and Therehegoes others to consider.

Soul Seeker isn't opposed lightly from a good draw but preference is for ECCLESIASTICAL, who won comfortably at Ripon last week.
