1st (1) (15/2 -50%) Could Be Trouble |
15/2(-50%) | (1) Could Be Trouble 15/2, Hurdles/chase winner who was placed on first 3 starts of this season, including when second in a 7-runner 25.3f handicap hurdle here in November. Below par last time but can be excused that (race may have come too soon) and she's a live each-way candidate. Not the force of old but was second off 3lb higher here in November; can't rule out. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
2nd (7) (28/1 +44%) Bridgetjoans |
28/1(+44%) | (7) Bridgetjoans 28/1, Showed a bit in 3 qualifying runs before Christmas but she's hard to warm to based on her handicap debut display at Newcastle. Visor applied. Soundly beaten (albeit on heavy ground) when 66-1 for handicap debut; visor now added. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
3rd (3) (6/1 -50%) Zwicky |
6/1(-50%) | (3) Zwicky 6/1, Perfect start to this season, bagging back-to-back handicaps at Sedgefield and Carlisle before finishing a solid third of 15 off this mark at Doncaster. Ran no sort of a race tried over 3m last time but likely to be in the thick of things if on-song back down in trip here. Ran as though something was amiss last time but can resume earlier progress if all is well. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
4th (10) (14/1 -40%) Misty Mani |
14/1(-40%) | (10) Misty Mani 14/1, Won 3 on the bounce in 2022 and returned to form following a string of underwhelming efforts when going close at Market Rasen in September then finishing third over this C&D. Lesser effort last time, though, and should could do with the ground drying out. Placed over C&D in December; a possible if the ground dries out. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
5th (13) (12/1 +14%) Feach Amach |
12/1(+14%) | (13) Feach Amach 12/1, Fair maiden on the Flat for Jim Bolger and improved plenty on opening hurdles exploits when landing a Sedgefield juvenile in November. Hasn't built on that in 2 subsequent starts, though, and others make more appeal. Just a respectable third in Sedgefield handicap last month and effectively 1lb higher here. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
6th (8) (15/2 +25%) Lifetime Legend |
15/2(+25%) | (8) Lifetime Legend 15/2, Below par since winning this race 12 months ago but he's been given a real chance by the handicapper (11 lb lower in the weights this time round) and perhaps the return to this venue will do the trick. Needs considering. Won this race off 1lb higher a year ago but not firing on all cylinders this season. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
7th (9) (15/2 -25%) Belle Na Bann |
15/2(-25%) | (9) Belle Na Bann 15/2, Dual winner for Neil Mulholland in summer 2022 and back on track for Micky Hammond when scoring at Newcastle in December and over 15.7f here on New Year's Day. Below par last time but she's on a similar mark to that off which she was runner-up in this race last year, so there's cause for optimism. Dual winner this winter; not at best last time, though, and probably needs a career best. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
8th (5) (2/1 +47%) Out Of Focus |
2/1(+47%) | (5) Out Of Focus 2/1, Bumper winner who has finished in the money on each of is 3 starts since switched to handicaps, most recently finishing third at Chepstow (19.4f, heavy) where he weakened in the closing stages after holding every chance 2 out. This sharper track may well aid his cause. Made the frame in first three handicaps and is a likely contender again. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
9th (4) (13/2 +59%) Gustoso |
13/2(+59%) | (4) Gustoso 13/2, Well beaten sole outing in bumpers but did offer promise on second of 3 starts in maiden/novice company when fourth at Wetherby in November. However, latest effort at Ludlow was uninspiring and sizeable step forward needed now pitched into a handicap. Pulled up last time but his first two hurdle runs were encouraging; handicap debut today. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
10th (6) (22/1 -57%) The Vollan |
22/1(-57%) | (6) The Vollan 22/1, Veteran who was safely held on his first run over hurdles for the best part of 2 years at Newcastle in January. Regressive 10yo; didn't run badly over hurdles two starts ago but others appeal more. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
11th (11) (50/1 -213%) Rouse |
50/1(-213%) | (11) Rouse 50/1, Only poor form in bumpers and has made little impact both completed starts over hurdles so far. Needs to raise his game considerably now venturing into handicap company. Showed no significant promise in his qualifying races but may fare better in handicaps. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 5 race.
Belle Na Bann and Zwicky are both on recovery missions after running below-par on their latest outings, but either would prove dangerous is bouncing back to form. Out Of Focus also enters calculations having posted several creditable efforts in defeat and the six-year-old should be in the mix once more. Nevertheless, Henry Daly has his string in fine fettle and there is a sneaking suspicion that handicap debutant GUSTOSO could be ahead of his mark.
It could be worth chancing LIFETIME LEGEND, who hasn't been firing on all cylinders of late but he's now 11 lb below the mark off which he beat Belle Na Bann in convincing fashion in this race last season. Zwicky needs to bounce back following a shocker at Southwell but he was in good order prior to that and is second choice ahead of Out of Focus and Misty Mani. If Molto Bene were to line up she would warrant serious consideration but she is due to run at Plumpton on Monday.
Another chance is given to ZWICKY, has now been a beaten favourite three consecutive times but may still resume his earlier progress.

1st (1) (6/5 +47%) Prairie Wolf |
6/5(+47%) | (1) Prairie Wolf 6/5, Largely progressive over hurdles and improved for switch to chasing, off the mark at second attempt at Doncaster (20.5f) in December. Solid fourth at Cheltenham subsequently (strong form) and very much of interest from same mark back down in grade. Eased-down winner at Doncaster in December and ran well in hot Cheltenham race last month. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
2nd (4) (4/1 -78%) Carrigeen Castle |
4/1(-78%) | (4) Carrigeen Castle 4/1, Maiden over hurdles but, having won an Irish point before joining Micky Hammond, showed much-improved form to land back-to-back handicap chase contests at around this trip in recent months. Hit with 10 lb rise for latest success but unlikely he's reached his limit just yet. Hiked up in grade after two Class 5 wins but still respected in current mood. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
3rd (3) (10/3 +0%) Cerendipity |
10/3(+0%) | (3) Cerendipity 10/3, Fairly useful winner over hurdles and built on an encouraging start in this sphere when getting off the mark at Wetherby in November. Backed it up with a solid third at Doncaster thereafter but found his jumping holding him back subsequently. Has point to prove after two non-completions but is on a good mark and can't be ignored. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
4th (5) (16/1 -45%) American Gerry |
16/1(-45%) | (5) American Gerry 16/1, Successful twice over hurdles in 2021/22 but hasn't managed to find any progress since and offered little on chase debut last time. Has had wind op. Pulled up on chasing debut but has become dangerously well handicapped on hurdling form. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|PU| (2) (15/2 -88%) Blue Fin |
15/2(-88%) | (2) Blue Fin 15/2, Hurdles winner who shaped promisingly when runner-up on return/chase debut at Carlisle (20f) in November. Disappointed back at that venue the following month but no surprise to see a better showing back from 72 days off. Flopped last time but was second to a smart rival on seasonal/chase debut in November. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 3 race.
Carrigeen Castle has really hit his stride since being campaigned over fences, as evidenced when completing a double at Wetherby earlier this month. However, a 10lb rise for that latest victory does demand more and it could be worth taking a punt on the downgraded PRAIRIE WOLF. Sue Smith's gelding was far from disgraced when fourth in class 2 company at Cheltenham and he has enjoyed success on the hurdles course at this venue. Blue Fin should appreciate this stiffer test and is also noted.
Having won impressively on his penultimate start at Doncaster, PRAIRIE WOLF acquitted himself with plenty of credit when fourth in the Timeform Novices' Handicap Chase at Cheltenham 31 days ago, tiring late on having pressed an upwardly-mobile sort from the off. He's well worth another chance given the strength of that race. Carrigeen Castle is progressing at a rate of knots himself and is feared in his hat-trick bid. Blue Fin completes the shortlist.
The pick is PRAIRIE WOLF, who followed his comfortable Doncaster win with a creditable fourth in a hot Cheltenham handicap last month.

1st (2) (5/2 +38%) Chase A Fortune |
5/2(+38%) | (2) Chase A Fortune 5/2, Made the most of a good opportunity in maiden hurdle here 12 months ago and best effort since when third in handicap here on New Year's Day. Has since had a breathing op. Makes chase debut (has the size to make a chaser). Took step back in right direction when placed over hurdles here last month; chase debut. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
2nd (3) (2/1 +0%) Treaty Boy |
2/1(+0%) | (3) Treaty Boy 2/1, Placed both starts between the flags and left novice hurdle form behind when making a winning handicap/chase debut over C&D last month. Has since left Rebecca Menzies. Open to improvement over fences (far less exposed than these rivals). Comfortable C&D winner on this month's chase/handicap debut; now with new stable. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
3rd (6) (4/1 +33%) Beat The Edge |
4/1(+33%) | (6) Beat The Edge 4/1, Should have won at Sedgefield on Boxing Day, turning it in once hitting the front, and found run of good form coming to an abrupt halt at Newcastle 4 weeks ago. Risky. Below form last month but placed three times (once over C&D) at end of 2023. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
4th (1) (28/1 +15%) Kalkas |
28/1(+15%) | (1) Kalkas 28/1, Fairly useful chaser at best for Henry de Bromhead but showed very little both starts for new yard after 20 months off. Headgear on. Well beaten on both starts for new stable; current ability very hard to gauge. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
5th (8) (10/1 -82%) Go Fox |
10/1(-82%) | (8) Go Fox 10/1, Won at Fakenham and Stratford last summer. Not quite at that level since but more of an impact off reduced mark when runner-up last 2 starts. Inconsistent nowadays but ran big race from the front when second at Fakenham recently. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
6th (4) (13/2 -63%) Upagainstit |
13/2(-63%) | (4) Upagainstit 13/2, Runner-up sole start in Irish points and improved on his hurdles form when making a winning start in this sphere at Warwick (16.2f) last spring. However, fell at the last at Haydock on final start last season and below par both starts this term. Has dipped below winning mark. Yet to build upon last season's winning chase debut; safely held when third last time. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
7th (5) (25/1 -213%) Getaway Jewel |
25/1(-213%) | (5) Getaway Jewel 25/1, Southwell winner (15.8f) in June but mixed record since, possibly amiss when last seen in October. Type to bounce back. Won last summer but not seen since a poor run in October; not one to rely upon. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|PU| (7) (66/1 -200%) Treshnish |
66/1(-200%) | (7) Treshnish 66/1, Showed possible signs of a revival for new connections after 9 months off (formerly with Sue Smith) when fourth of 6 in handicap chase (11/1) at Hexham (15.6f, heavy) but ran poorly at Sedgefield next time. Didn't run badly on seasonal/stable debut but tailed off since; others preferred. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 5 race.
TREATY BOY proved a different proposition when scoring with ease on his chase bow over C&D earlier this month. The seven-year-old is now under the tutelage of Stuart Coltherd and a 7lb rise in the ratings may not be enough to prevent him from following up. A subsequent wind operation following Chase A Fortune's third over hurdles here in January makes him of some interest on his first foray over fences. The Cannock Chase gelding is feared most ahead of Upagainstit.
TREATY BOY proved a different model fitted with a tongue strap and sent chasing on handicap debut when value double the winning margin over C&D last month and can defy a 7 lb rise starting out for a new yard. Chase A Fortune took a step back in the right direction over hurdles here last time and has the size to make a chaser, so is next best ahead of the returning Getaway Jewel.
The most obvious answer is lightly raced 7yo TREATY BOY, who won in pretty good style over C&D on his recent chase/handicap debut.

1st (8) (5/1 -100%) Wolfburg |
5/1(-100%) | (8) Wolfburg 5/1, Much better effort in bumpers on the back of a breathing op when third of 12 at Carlisle in November and showed an aptitude for hurdling when fourth at Kelso (16.2f, heavy) 60 days ago. Entitled to improve. Upside Isholo Du Vivien on his switch to hurdles at Kelso (heavy) despite racing keenly. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
2nd (7) (15/8 -7%) Stay If U Want To |
15/8(-7%) | (7) Stay If U Want To 15/8, Showed much improved form in a first-time hood to get off the mark in bumpers at the third attempt in 10-runner event at Market Rasen (16.6f, soft) 96 days ago, leading again close home. Has leading claims on hurdle debut. Form of bumper win nothing special at all but should progress over jumps. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
3rd (4) (5/1 -67%) Isholo Du Vivien |
5/1(-67%) | (4) Isholo Du Vivien 5/1, Point winner who bettered his rather disappointing Rules debut display in a bumper when finishing third of 11 starting out over hurdles at Kelso (16.2f, heavy) during the Christmas period. Ran to a similar level when filling same spot at Hereford subsequently. Irish point winner; beaten 11l and 7l in his two hurdles, on heavy and good to soft. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
4th (6) (22/1 -10%) Rehill Relic |
22/1(-10%) | (6) Rehill Relic 22/1, Comfortable winner of sole outing in points but was readily put in his place by the winner when second of 4 in a Haydock bumper on Rules debut and was far too keen at Carlisle last time. Makes hurdle bow. Won an ordinary British point; modest efforts in bumpers but can make a hurdler. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
5th (9) (2/1 +67%) Zero Tolerance |
2/1(+67%) | (9) Zero Tolerance 2/1, Placed in an Irish bumper for Charles O'Brien and made the frame in 2 maiden hurdles last season. Well held on handicap debut at Ffos Las when last seen in a year ago but still needs considering in an ordinary maiden. Best form brings him into it and market should guide after a 12-month absence. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
6th (2) (33/1 +18%) Foster's Fortune |
33/1(+18%) | (2) Foster's Fortune 33/1, Showed modest form first 2 starts in bumpers but was well held over C&D last month. Makes hurdle debut. Ability in bumpers but others have more pressing claims on this switch to hurdles. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
7th (11) (100/1 -100%) Rhiannon Ring |
100/1(-100%) | (11) Rhiannon Ring 100/1, From a good jumping family and finished runner-up sole start in Irish points but has shown nothing in a bumper/maiden hurdle under Rules. Showed ability in a point but heavy defeats have followed under rules. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
8th (1) (12/1 -20%) Bunker Bay |
12/1(-20%) | (1) Bunker Bay 12/1, Fair handicapper on Flat (stays 2m), won once in 2023. Sold from William Knight's yard for 13,000 gns in October. Could have a say if taking to this discipline. 1m3f winner (Class 5) on good to soft ground last summer; should make a hurdler. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
9th (12) (100/1 -100%) National Question |
100/1(-100%) | (12) National Question 100/1, Brother to a useful hurdler but has shown just modest form at best on the Flat, offering little at Newcastle 17 days ago. Limited Flat maiden from 5f to 1m2f (just six runs); would be a surprise winner. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
10th (3) (33/1 -32%) Gold Ring |
33/1(-32%) | (3) Gold Ring 33/1, Modest winner at 2m on the Flat last year but has shown little in a maiden/novice hurdle. Second run over hurdles was better than the first but still has a good bit to find. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
11th (5) (100/1 -150%) Not Now Tayto |
100/1(-150%) | (5) Not Now Tayto 100/1, Made frame both starts in Irish points but was well held on recent hurdling debut at Sedgefield. Went off at 33-1 for hurdling debut at Sedgefield and was always behind. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|PU| (10) (150/1 -50%) Bettybea |
150/1(-50%) | (10) Bettybea 150/1, Down the field in 2 bumpers 12 weeks apart. Tailed off in both her bumpers at massive odds. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 4 race.
STAY IF U WANT TO displayed a tough attitude when taking a Market Rasen bumper in November on his third career start. The experience gained from his first couple of outings likely aided his cause and he could take advantage of what appears to be a winnable opportunity on his hurdling debut. Wolfburg is entitled to step forward from his Kelso fourth in December, while Isholo Du Vivien appeals most of the remainder.
STAY IF YOU WANT TO showed fairly useful form when making it third time lucky in bumpers at Market Rasen in November and, it's fair to assume, he'll prove hard to beat if running to a similar level on this switch to hurdling. Wolfburg and Isholo du Vivien are feared most in that order.
Jonjo O'Neill's STAY IF YOU WANT TO won a modest bumper at Market Rasen but he showed plenty of spirit to prevail.

1st (1) (5/4 +38%) Twoshotsoftequila |
5/4(+38%) | (1) Twoshotsoftequila 5/4, Strong-travelling sort got off the mark over fences in 6-runner Doncaster handicap (good) last March. Knocking on the door this season, though found run of good form coming to a halt last month. Type to bounce back. Below par last time but in a strong race and he had been knocking on the door. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
2nd (2) (9/4 +50%) Dr Kananga |
9/4(+50%) | (2) Dr Kananga 9/4, Lightly raced 10-y-o who took a big step back in the right direction off reduced mark in first-time headgear (cheekpieces) when second at Fontwell 2 weeks ago and could be ready to strike with blinkers now tried. Something of a revival last time and likely contender if taking to the new blinkers. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
3rd (6) (11/2 -100%) Mister Bells |
11/2(-100%) | (6) Mister Bells 11/2, Took advantage of a much-reduced mark having his first start in veterans company when scoring over C&D 5 weeks ago. Suited by the run of the race that day but was value for double the winning margin, so player up 7 lb. Back to form with a bang when winning a veterans' chase by an eased-down 12l over C&D. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
4th (5) (11/1 -144%) Everyday Champagne |
11/1(-144%) | (5) Everyday Champagne 11/1, First run since leaving Nicky Richards when bagging 12-runner handicap chase at Ayr (20.5f, good) in November. Undone by mistakes in a better race at Newcastle next time but this is more realistic and a tongue tie is now on. Ayr winner but Newcastle was disappointing and yet to prove himself on ground this soft. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
5th (3) (15/2 -67%) East Street |
15/2(-67%) | (3) East Street 15/2, Unreliable type who resumed winning ways at Wetherby (24.2f) in November and went close at Newcastle next time, albeit looking a typically hard ride. Turned it in big time at Haydock since and got no further than the fifth tried in this headgear at Carlisle last week. Capable chaser but jumping can be an issue as he reminded us last week. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 4 race.
TWOSHOTSOFTEQUILA was fancied to give a decent account in the Great Yorkshire at Doncaster but never landed a blow on that occasion when finishing down the field. The seven-year-old had been running well in defeat prior to that effort and the drop in class gives him solid claims. Dr Kananga took a step back in the right direction when runner-up at Fontwell and a change of headgear to blinkers may yield some improvement. Others to consider are East Street and Mister Bells.
DR KANANGA took a big step back in the right direction from a tumbling mark when second in first-time headgear at Fontwell 2 weeks ago and shades the vote over Mister Bells, who was value for double the winning margin in a veterans event over C&D 5 weeks ago. Everyday Champagne is another to consider back down in class.
Despite his big weight TWOSHOTSOFTEQUILA (nap) has leading claims. His penultimate piece of form was franked at the weekend.

1st (6) (10/3 +5%) Burrows Hall |
10/3(+5%) | (6) Burrows Hall 10/3, Opened account at Carlisle (17f) last spring and has been placed all 3 starts this season, including when second at this course (19.3f, heavy) in December. Tries longer trip now and must enter calculations. In form but the principal concern here is the significant rise in distance. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
2nd (4) (4/1 +27%) Accidental Legend |
4/1(+27%) | (4) Accidental Legend 4/1, Returned to winning ways at Uttoxeter (19.9f) in December and backed that up when creditable second of 12 in handicap hurdle at Chepstow (19.4f, heavy, 4/1) 34 days ago. Remains feasibly treated and is well worth a try at this longer trip. Solid runs the last twice and could be an improver over this new distance. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
3rd (5) (10/3 -48%) Shantou Moon |
10/3(-48%) | (5) Shantou Moon 10/3, Back to winning ways here last month and only narrowly failed to follow up in 7-runner handicap hurdle over C&D (soft) 25 days ago. Shortlist material. First and second on his recent visits here; can lack concentration but he's running well. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
4th (3) (15/2 +32%) Foillan |
15/2(+32%) | (3) Foillan 15/2, Made more impact than previously for this yard, in first time cheekpieces/tongue strap, when fifth of 10 in handicap hurdle at Haydock (24.3f, heavy) 10 days ago. Claims if building on that. Visor now applied. Downgraded from better races and definite signs of a return to form at Haydock latterly. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
5th (1) (12/1 +0%) Biowavego |
12/1(+0%) | (1) Biowavego 12/1, Three-time winner over timber who shaped as if better for run (after 5 months off ) when fifth of 7 in handicap hurdle at Warwick (25f, heavy) 36 days ago. Has fallen to a workable mark. Modest last time but he's won before on the back of a disappointing effort. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
6th (2) (10/1 +0%) Teescomponentstrig |
10/1(+0%) | (2) Teescomponentstrig 10/1, Tried in blinkers when below form at Ayr latest but had acquitted himself well in defeat at Hexham and Newcastle previously and usual cheekpieces are reapplied now. Blinkers backfired last time; had been threatening before then and cheekpieces return. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
7th (7) (5/1 -67%) Lincoln Burrows |
5/1(-67%) | (7) Lincoln Burrows 5/1, Justified support, in first-time cheekpieces, when winning 11-runner handicap hurdle at Newcastle (22f, heavy) 28 days ago, kept up to work. 5 lb rise fair and not taken lightly. Upped in grade so has more on his plate than when winning off a lower mark at Newcastle. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 4 race.
SHANTOU MOON was just denied when attempting for back-to-back C&D victories at the start of the month having potentially hit the front sooner than ideal. If able to be produced later, a 4lb rise for that neck defeat is unlikely to make too much of a difference. Burrows Hall brings a consistent level of form to the table and may benefit from stepping up in trip, while Lincoln Burrows and Accidental Legend can fight it out for the minor honours.
SHANTOU MOON has upped his game here in recent starts and gets the nod in a tricky-looking handicap. Lincoln Burrows and Burrows Hall rate the principal dangers.
A few with chances. ACCIDENTAL LEGEND is Fergal O'Brien's only runner on the card and looks ready for today's stiffer test of stamina.
Ths is the racecard key.

Horse racing is a popular and historic sport in the UK, with a tradition dating back centuries. It is a multi-billion pound industry that attracts millions of spectators each year and generates significant economic activity.
There are two main types of horse racing in the UK: flat racing and jump racing. Flat racing is run on a level course and is typically shorter in distance, while jump racing involves horses jumping over obstacles and is generally longer in distance. Both types of racing are popular with spectators and bettors, and they take place at various racetracks throughout the country.
The most famous horse racing event in the UK is the Grand National, which is held annually at Aintree Racecourse in Liverpool.
