![]() Eagles Reprieve |
(4) 11/8(+66%) | (4) Eagles Reprieve 11/8, Debut bumper winner at Wetherby before making a promsing start in this sphere when second of 6 in juvenile at Haydock in December. This son of Wings of Eagles has more to offer so must enter calculations. Would have finished behind Smart Decision last time had that rival not unseated. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
![]() Smart Decision |
(1) 2/1(+100%) | (1) Smart Decision 2/1, Debut juvenile winner at Doncaster in November and running well when unseated rider last (in second) in similar event at Haydock following month. Back from a break now with very good form claims. In second and clear of two of these when unseating at the last flight at Haydock. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
![]() Dearkeithandkaty |
(3) 4/1(+38%) | (3) Dearkeithandkaty 4/1, 12/1, encouraging third of 12 in bumper at Hereford on NH debut 78 days ago. Much respected on his hurdles debut. Beaten 8l in a Hereford bumper and will appreciate further in time. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
![]() The Resdev Tyke |
(6) 12/1(-118%) | (6) The Resdev Tyke 12/1, Sent off 15/8 on his Haydock debut but left with too much ground to make up after being dropped out, coming in 25 lengths third in juvenile in December. Capable of better. Favourite at Haydock but that form leaves him with ground to make up on two of these. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
![]() Lautrec De Cougny |
(5) 16/1(-60%) | (5) Lautrec De Cougny 16/1, Tongue tied and much improved from his debut when third of 8 in juvenile hurdle at Wetherby 25 days ago. May do better still so needs considering. Third at Wetherby but take out the impressive winner and that looked a modest race. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
![]() Cap Ricochet |
(2) 22/1(+21%) | (2) Cap Ricochet 22/1, Showed a bit on the first of 2 bumper starts when fourth at Wetherby but not enough to suggest he's likely to make a winning start over hurdles now. Two defeats in bumpers, finishing nearly 10l off Eagles Reprieve in the first. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 4 race.
SMART DECISION likely would have finished second but for unseating his rider after the last at Haydock and makes plenty of appeal in this weaker-looking affair. Tim Easterby's gelding had previously made a winning debut at Doncaster and looks capable of defying a 7lb penalty. The biggest threat may emerge from hurdling newcomer Dearkeithandkaty, who displayed ability on his third-placed bumper bow at Hereford. Lautrec De Cougny is the pick of the remainder.
SMART DECISION has to concede 7 lb all round but possesses much the best form so is taken to quickly resume winning ways. Both Lautrec de Cougny (second choice) and Eagles Reprieve have better days ahead of them though and should ensure Tim Easterby's son of Postponed doesn't have things all his own way.
This looks a golden opportunity for SMART DECISION to make amends for Haydock where he was unlucky to unseat at the last.

![]() Smokeringinthedark |
(1) 4/9(+63%) | (1) Smokeringinthedark 4/9, Runner-up in his only outing in Irish points and showed a good attitude in going one better in maiden at Musselburgh (19.8f) on hurdling debut in December. Failed to progress from that performance over longer trip at same track since but remains with potential. Slightly disappointing over 3m last month but beat smart rival on hurdle debut (2m4f). |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
![]() Spadestep |
(9) 9/2(-64%) | (9) Spadestep 9/2, £50,000 5-y-o, Jukebox Jury gelding. Closely related to 2m chase winner Take Centre Stage, and half-brother to smart hurdler/very smart chaser Tommy's Oscar. Successful sole start in points last year and needs monitoring in market on NH debut. Half-brother to Tommy's Oscar; bought for £50,000 after winning Irish point debut. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
![]() Kadjar Des Mottes |
(4) 9/2(-13%) | (4) Kadjar Des Mottes 9/2, Made an encouraging start over hurdles at Bangor in November. Not been in quite same form either start since but must enter calculations here. Fair form when third on all three hurdling starts and has good each-way claims here. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
![]() Natzor |
(8) 14/1(-87%) | (8) Natzor 14/1, Fairly useful handicapper at up to 1½m on the Flat for David O'Meara who showed an aptitude to hurdling when third of 9 in novice at Musselburgh (15.6f, good to soft) 21 days ago. Entitled to build on that. Fairly useful Flat racer; respectable third on hurdle debut; should build on that effort. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
![]() Bel Amigo |
(2) 18/1(-64%) | (2) Bel Amigo 18/1, Won over fences on final start in France last spring. Yet to make an impact in a couple of hurdles starts for new yard, though, and tries shorter trip now. Had wind operation. Won France chase last spring but first two British hurdle runs were disappointing. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
![]() Little Roger |
(6) 66/1(-200%) | (6) Little Roger 66/1, Boasts a good pedigree but didn't see things out on second of his bumpers starts and was a similar story on hurdles bow here 20 days ago. Showed minor promise before weakening into sixth over C&D on hurdle debut. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
![]() Long Time Listener |
(7) 80/1(-142%) | (7) Long Time Listener 80/1, Point bumper winner but no real impact on NH debut 12 months ago or on switch to hurdling at Newcastle in November. Not disgraced on hurdle debut in November but recent point form is underwhelming. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
![]() King Coconut |
(5) 150/1(-436%) | (5) King Coconut 150/1, Shaped in need of experience when last of 9 in C&D novice hurdle on NH debut 34 days ago and is likely a longer-term prospect. Last of nine over C&D on debut five weeks ago. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
![]() Team Endeavour |
(10) 300/1(-140%) | (10) Team Endeavour 300/1, Modest Flat winner for Ian Williams who went with little promise (back from 16 months off) on yard/hurdles debut at Sedgefield in January. Refused to settle and was pulled up when 200-1 for stable/hurdle debut at Sedgefield. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
![]() Do Ye Wanna |
(3) 300/1(-100%) | (3) Do Ye Wanna 300/1, Offered little in a couple of bumper outings and can only be watched on hurdles debut. Tailed off in two slow-ground bumpers in early part of 2024; hurdle debut today. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 4 race.
Smokeringinthedark was underwhelming when a well-beaten fourth in a class 2 event at Musselburgh, although he must enter calculations dropping in grade. However, this distance might prove on the sharp side and it could be worth taking a punt on Rules debutant SPADESTEP. Lucinda Russell's inmate proved a ready winner on his sole outing between the flags and there is enough speed in his pedigree to suggest a bold showing. Natzor may fare best of the remainder.
SMOKERINGINTHEDARK may not have been suited by the longer trip when fourth at Musselburgh last time and remains low mileage. He can get back on the winning trail. Lucinda Russell's newcomer Spadestep must be taken seriously, particularly if the market vibes are strong, whilst Kadjar des Mottes should also go well.
This is a new trip for SMOKERINGINTHEDARK but he did not look short of speed when beating a smart rival over 2m4f in December.
